Some Apps in Cortana cannot be deleted: Redstone One Clean install

Q: Some Apps in Cortana cannot be deleted: Redstone One Clean install

I'm not able to delete Bring and some other apps using the dedicated command lines in Powershell and/or Powershell_ISE. Can someone help?

I saw here that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue (did not try that link):
Cortana - Enable or Disable in Windows 10

For the rest, interesting new features in the settings menu. The installer asks to confirmed the Home or the Pro version and sees that I run the Pro version. On post-installation, the Pro version has similar behavior of the Home version. The very last thing that a Pro version owner wants to deal with is the HOME version.

Got the ISO from Micrsoft there:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

is there any way to save my apps so I can easily install them when I go to Windows 7 in October for a clean install?

A:Save apps for a clean install?

What ive been doing for the past few months is to install W7 from a SD card. Ive been using a bootable 16GB card and just replacing the windows folders with the latest leaked ones when ive got them (stopped at 7600 of course).
I also have a folder that i put my most used apps in. FF3, ESET, Newsleecher, my bookmarks, Lightroom 2, Office 2003 etc. I update the apps when new versions are released.
It works for me and its a lot quicker than installing form CD's/DVD's.
I even plan to do this when i get my HP copy in Oct.

Hey all,

I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 x64, the most current 16385 Build. Set-up was perfectly smooth, detected a lot of my drivers, etc.

I go to install Firefox, so I download it, and try to install but nothing happens. I tried to download it again, save the .exe, click on it, and nothing happens.

I check my task manager and I see "Firefox 3.5.1 Beta Setup.exe *32" and then the actual "setup.exe *32" process running, but they do absolutely nothing. None of these installs work (I've tried Firefox, foobar2000, you name it)

This is obviously an absolute useability killer right now. Everyone I know who is running x64 has never ran into this problem, and I'm wondering if you all could give your advice here.

Thanks,

Mike

A:Clean Windows7 x64 Install not running ANY 32-bit apps

Actually, here's an update:

It appears to be something with the HsMgr.exe *32 process. The computer is starting up with it. If I end the process, all the 32-bit processes all work. I took it out of startup w/ msconfig and now everything works!

However, could someone maybe enlighten me on what exactly that process is and if it is necessary for any Windows 7 functions?

OK - I'm not overly Techie I'm afraid. Just considering the upgrade from Euro version of Vista to W7 E. This means a clean install, I'm happy with the whole partitioning thing, but how do I get all my old data and apps onto W7 once it's up and running? I've got many many gig of data and some excellent apps that I need working without a whole lot of grief. How does this happen? If this is a matter of an entire manual re-load of all this data etc, I'm simply not going to do the upgrade. Can anyone help?

Hello,

In need of basic advise please.

I am building a new computer next weekend and have three drives and would appreciate your advice on a partitioning strategy for 3 drives:

- Drive 1: New 256GB SSD m.2 pci-e SSD for Win10 and apps (autocad, sketchup, Adobe CC, rendering apps)

- Drive 2: Old 2010 Vertex SSD which is 90-120gb (can't recall) for scratch disk/win page file for Adobe and apps

- Drive 3: New HGST 7200rpm 4TB 3.5" HDD for files, pics, video and possible system image ( necessary on Win10?)

1) I plan to format all 3 drives as NTFS unless there is strong suggestion to do otherwise?
2) what is best partition strategy for Drive 1? How much GBs for partitions for Win vs Apps? Is 60GB adequate for win10 partition leaving just under 200 GB for apps?
3) I read on win website to create 3 partitions for sys in this order: utilities; sys; win recovery. Does default win setup do this automatically or must I specify how many partitions and in what order and in what size? I'm clueless on this.
4) Disk 2: how much risk am I taking by using 5 yr old SSD for scratch disk? The virtual memory is volatile anyway so am I just risking each current session? I plan to point page file, cache, scratch to this drive. If too risky, I presume that using boot SSD as scratch is better than using HDD #3?
5) Disk 3: does win10 still require that user do image of opsys for recovery (using acronis et al) and, if so, how many GBs do I partition on Disk 3 and if so does it matter if it... Read more

A:Partition strategy for clean install (Win10, apps, scratch, storage)?

I can tell you how I would start. Boot from the Windows 10 install USB, select custom install, delete any partitions on the first SSD, install Windows 10 to the unallocated space and let it create it's own partitions.

Also, I would not pay full price for a Windows 10 product key, I would purchase a cheaper Windows 7 or 8 and use that product key to activate Windows 10 with.

I am still running Win10 Pro (November Update 1511), and I am waiting for Redstone 1 (stable release) to roll out. I think its planned in January of 2017, I am not sure.

Anyways, I did a clean install of Win10 Pro version 1511 using by license key for that version from the Media Creation Tool.

My question is, can I use the same license key from my copy of Win10 Pro (1511) for the next major release of Win10 which will be Redstone or Redstone1 using the Media Creation Tool (clean install)?

And of course, I will be always doing a clean install and not an in place upgrade when Redstone rolls out.

Like innumerable other Win10 users, I have been trying for quite a while to get broken apps and Cortana to work again, after the Anniversary 'update'. I've repeatedly tried sfc /scannow; DISM restorehealth; MS Repair tools; Windows troubleshooter; the infamous Powershell "Get-AppXPackage | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml", ad nauseum, with no luck at all.

Today, while Googling a somewhat different topic, I stumbled across a shareware program that actually FIXED Cortana, and ALL metro apps. It's called Windows Repair Free/Pro, from Tweaking.com. The free version is fully functional for repairing Windows problems; just follow all the directions exactly. The $20 Pro version just adds some performance and visual tweak options.

You have to run the repair tools twice; it took about 4-1/2 hours, total, on my system. On the first pass, when the repair tool was re-installing metro apps, several of the same errors appeared in the cmd box as with the above mentioned Powershell command line. After the required reboot into Safe Mode w/networking, the second pass returned no errors at all, and everything is working again.

If only I had found this program five or six weeks ago! I could have saved countless frustrating hours of beating my head against the scre... Read more

Hi, try Windows key + S. Does Cortana appear and is it functional?

If not, check Location is on in the Action centre and the geolocation service is running.

To restore the tile and shortcut you may need to do an in-place upgrade repair install (see the Tutorial section where you can find instructions).

- do not try Powershell commands- the typical ones to repair apps haven't worked since build 10540.

First off Hello everybody and sorry this is my first post I am normally just a lurker. This forum, even though I have never posted ,has been a huge help with quite a few things and a great resource in general.

Trying to clear out the All Apps list on the start menu. Most apps I have uninstalled and utility folders deleted. The 3 things left on there that I would still like to remove are Cortana, Microsoft Edge, and Settings. I do not want to uninstall Cortana or Microsoft Edge. I simply do not want those three things to appear in the list. i.e. I deleted the Administrative Tools folder from programdata/microsoft/windows/startmenu which stops the shortcuts from appearing in the list but I still have access to all the things within.

I know its small but its important. On a side note I could have sworn i read somewhere that microsoft was going to be updating their upgrade system so you no longer had to do an in place upgrade before you could do a clean install. Does anybody know anything about that or is that not a thing. I do not seem to be able to find the original article I was reading and may have misread.

Hi and welcome to Tenforums.

Sounds like you might want to try a repair install by doing an in-place upgrade. You can grab the appropriate W10 ISO from MSTechBench, right-click and select mount, then run setup.exe.

See the screenshot below for selection you have to make for not to convert your local account to a Microsoft Account:

Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

Screenshot from tutorial Skype App - Use with Local Account in Windows 8.

You of course need an email address (Microsoft Account) but it will only be used for the app in question (Windows Store is also just an app), so in the next dialog either give an existing Microsoft Account credentials or select Sign up for a Microsoft account to create a new one to be used with Store app:

Your Windows sign in account will remain local, it will not be converted to a Microsoft Account.

First, I'd like to point out that I found and read this thread that, in the last post, tells me how to disable Cortana. https://techguy.org/1185771

But for me, that is not enough. I want her file gone completely. I opened the file location and moved Cortana's file onto my desktop. I've yet to delete it because I don't know what harm could or could not happen.

That being said, let me tell you about my laptop, in case that makes any difference.
My laptop is a SonicMaster by Asus, E403S Series (the biggest piece of sh*t that I will NEVER buy again. SO MANY PROBLEMS.)

If any more laptop info is needed, let me know. While I'm considered the tech guru of my house, all of this is way beyond my head.

I had upgraded to Win 8 pro from Win 7 by digital download from MS and installed on 1 desktop and 2 notebooks. All upgrades went fine. However only the desktop functioned normally. Both the notebooks would not function as expected.

The problem started soon after installation. The Tiles became unresponsive, the screen would blank out when any of the Tiles were clicked. Tried contacting MS support, only to waste 2 hours while the Tech checked settings etc. but to no avail. I was told that I would be transferred up to level 2 support but since I had no more time or patience I have not followed this up till now.

Refresh Windows had been tried once. With no change.

In my infinite wisdom the next day I tried Refresh a second time and lo and behold all my installed Applications (software) vanished including MS Office 2010. Cannot be seen or found by search. The same is the case with notebook no. 2.

At this point I do not care about the tiles etc. just getting my apps and associated data back intact. With Explorer I can see that these program files still reside on the HD. When I tried to invoke them directly by clicking the appropriate .exe files I got the message the " ERROR The operating system is not configured properly to run these applications."

Please any input will be highly appreciated. I am desperate. Thank you

A:Refresh deleted my Apps

Well this is a new one...

By 'refresh' I think you mean reinstall windows? In that case all of your programs WILL disappear...

The best guess as to why windows 8 doesn't work good is because notebooks aren't fully supported for some reason. There are a few people asking about this, and Microsoft might add in more support in future updates for this.

There was a similar thread where someone posted asking if Microsoft will eventually add support for net books...

Personally I think Microsoft intends to let net books, notebooks and any other similar device die. With the new tablets out, there really seems no need for them it seems. So if your notebooks don't get supported in future updates, you'll know why.

Sorry to say...

On the desktop all my shortcuts, folders and such were gone, though 2 folders remained intact but with almost evering inside deleted only 2 files inside each of those survived. To make this worse alle my windows apps is deleted except of desktop, store, onedrive and camera. Even Paint and calculator is deleted.

btw i'm runnning W8 8.1

But most importantly is there any way to recover my files?

My question is does the clean install also clean out any hidden/unactive virus/rootkit if i format the laptop to its factory condition?

I have tried various AV software on this old laptop but the results come out clean but I still suspect there're some remain hidden as the system is slowly corrupted.

A:Clean install vista from recovery partition in D drive also clean virus?

Hi,

The answer is yes it will, if you do a destructive install (Format "C") & it has not infected any other drives.

So, what drives do you have on your system? "C" (System) & "D" (Recovery) plus DVD/CD drives.

Do you have anything else? USB plug in hard drives or USB memory sticks etc. etc.

Hi BC,
Couple months ago I spent some time in your malware forums trying to resolve issues with a constantly running Windows 7 media center which I noticed was running - not my - porn and bitcoins through. The issue progressed, solutions did not, files got locked, online access became scarce, and as I couldnt keep in timely contact with your well-intentioned helpers here, my thread was closed. To not be a burden on volunteer time, I left the idea of one on one help behind and sought additional insight on my own.
4 months after first noticing an issue, I have my same refurbished HP notebook with no accessible OS, no way to install one from disk, no income, and no hope.
I do have 12 weeks of notes from the most tenacious remote hack I believe exists. It has swallowed my entire home network and every machine in it, even those not configured for online access.
To start, I just want to get an OS on my laptop. I've long since kissed my data goodbye. I ran killdisk multiple times - the last time took 6 days - but I still have an X drive with a registry, command prompt, notepad, you name it, on my machine. I just dont have normal access to "windows"... all these individual programs I can access through command prompt.
Today I'm looking at a new security log called "backup" that starts, "administrative privileged user logged on. Parsing template defltwk.inf. Configuration engine was initialized successfully..."
I have an X drive but no C drive. I have 238Gb of unallocated space on a... Read more

Hi Guys
BACKGROUND: Im relatively experienced technical windows guy but I wanted some top tips please rebuilding my XPS17 (L702X tag D6F23S1) after my HDD started corrupting files & registry after 5 years use.
I swapped it for an SSD, now I have some challenges which I'd love some help / wise advice with.
I WOULD LIKE TO: Either recover the image from data (need help) or do a full format of the Windows partitiion (ensuring I have all the right drivers) and begin the painful task of a rebuild.
CURRENTLY I HAVE DONE THE FOLLOWING:
1. Imaged the original HDD and applied the image to the SSD.
2. I have tried a new install of windows which has installed to the original drive but leaving only 10% space free.
3. When I break out of the boot sequence I dont get the Dell Recovery option but i can see the Recovery partition in 'Disk Management'.
4. I cant find the recovery discs easily (think house move and everything in the attic situation) made originally but I do have the data on my network NAS and can copy over to a USB stick - I have tried to boot to the USB but I cant make that happen.
QUESTION:
A. Is there a good guide that allows me to download and boot to a recovery environment, format the C: drive and reinstall windows?
B. Is there anyway I can download software which can utilise existing data I have to recover the original windows state please?
I'd be grateful for any advice you can give!
Many thanks
Marcus

Hi Folks,

I just did a clean install of Win7 and must have done something wrong. I found a file called Windows.old.

I would like to wipe my hard drive completely clean and then install a fresh copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

How do I accomplish this task? It's a good time to start over because I'm just at the stage of adding the security software. Already did the drivers but don't mind doing those over again.

I have a Dell 5150, Pentium D820, Dual Core 2.8 GHz with 3 GBs memory.

Many thanks,

ms

Do you a regular Windows 7 installation disk, with Product Key?

If so, boot from that disk by setting your DVD drive as the first boot device in the BIOS or by choosing the DVD drive from a menu. Do you know how to do that?

Midway in the installation process you will come to a screen that asks where you want to install Windows. Look for "drive options, advanced" or something very close to that. Take that choice.

At the next screen, all of your partitions will be shown. Delete them all.

That will leave you with nothing but "unallocated space".

When you install to the unallocated space, it will be automatically formatted by Windows and you should end up with a very small "System Reserved" partition and a large C partition covering the rest of the drive.

Back up your data before beginning.

Windows.old is your old installation. If you proceed as above, you won't get it.

With 3 GB of RAM, you should probably go with 32-bit.

Finally decided to wipe my drive and reinstall windows.   PC has been working good but lately started acting strange with intermittent connectivity and the just yesterday all connected wifi devices lost their log info so that was odd.  Today when I rebooted this PC, I saw the original windows start up screen you'd see if during a fresh install or a restore and that's not right.  Finally I took at look at event viewer and saw a new NT user was added and I didn't do that so here we go again.   This time I suspect the vectors is a compromised Gateway which I have reset but will need to replace with better quality equipment than the junk Comcast is renting me.  This prompted me to run Farbar and come back to the forum for help.

2nd issue-  I need help with my Norton firewall settings.   I want to lock this pc down except for approved programs.

My \windows\installer folder was 4GB so I searched for a way to reduce it and found the download Windows Installer Clean Up. Unfortunately it does more than clean up. It renders the application unusable if you remove the installer information. (eg MS Office unusable now).
This is not a "clean up" it is an "uninstall". I understood this folder contained info related only to the recovery of apps - not info required for their ongoing function. Huge difference. (I took a backup of the installer folder before using the utility - and I copied back all the files - and re-booted - but that does not seem to resolve my problem.)
Any way out? (Other than to re-install everything and give my 4GB back to Microsoft).

Running XP on a system that took a lightning hit a few months back and one piece of hardware that was destroyed (ATI TV Wonder card) no longer exists on the system. I uninstalled the related ATI software, but find that XP is still trying to start 4 or 5 services that are related to the old hardware when I boot up. The programs are gone, so I see errors relating to the attempted starts in the event log. I'm no registry expert, but I suppose that's where the record of these services is - any suggestions on how to clean this out?

Hi All,

I had a problem with one of my accounts, Fortunately there was no real data in it. It was just used as a second admin account in case my main one got corrupted. Anyway I tried to login to it today and kept getting set up on a temporary profile because of a sharing problem even directly from a boot. So I deleted that account and set up a new backup admin account but it has left a few bits and pieces around.

1. The user folders.
2. The media player device in my network.
3. The temporary user files that were created when I tried to logon.

Can I safely delete the user folders.
How do I get rid of the media player device?

Is there anything else likely to be left lying around?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

A:Clean up a deleted account

I've had this issue with user accounts before, but never a admin account. I would be cautious about forcing more changes to it, since it was apparently the original root admin account, it could have information about your windows installation and some programs attached to it.

Hopefully there is someone here that's had direct personal experience with your problem because that warning is really all I can offer.

A couple weeks ago, we got an early look at Cortana in Windows 10 and thanks to the new leak of Windows 10 build 9901, we have a lot more to share about the new feature.
As you can see from the images in this post, in build 9901, Cortana is much more refined in her appearance and she appears to be more responsive on our install. More so, we can also dig into the settings of the feature and gain a better understanding of where the feature is headed.

I did a quick search but did not return anything I was looking for, I am looking for a software that can delete files from the system, that are already deleted. Sure I can download a shredder or secure deleter to erase some new files, but I want to make those "recoverable" files "unrecoverable" because I am going to sell my computer soon, and I don't want anyone to recover the deleted files. I did not keep any sensitive data on my computer but even cookies, a few pictures here and there and my homeworks could be easily restored.

I downloaded one, I forgot the name sorry, but it messed up my Norton and norton kept popping up with "recovery is not available" error, I found the solution for that but isn't there a software that can search the computer for recoverable deleted files and delete them permenently.

I use tp://www.recovermyfiles.com/ to check my system, and it returns thousands of old files that I can recover, which I want deleted.

I believe another solution would be just overflowing computer with a script, that first checks the available hard drive space, and starts creating a file that keeps filling itself with data until it reaches a few KBs less than available space, and deletes itself, maybe that can remove the old files?

Thanks

Running Windows 8.1 on an HP Pavilion laptop. Just after Thanksgiving, my system started having boot problems (very slow to boot, often froze shortly after login).

I ran MalwareBytes' Anti Rootkit on it, which found and deleted some registry entries related to Trojan.Poweliks.b and Hijack.Trojan.Siredef.c.

That worked for a while, but a few days later it started flaking out again (freezing upon login). I turned off Superfetch and that seemed to help a great deal.

Now today, Google suddenly tells me I don't have permission to access the site. Time for a thorough cleaning. Please help me do so.

Edit: MalwareBytes and Kaspersky Internet Security both report a clean system.

A:MBAR deleted some registry trojans; now I want to be sure I'm clean

The problem with Poweliks is that it has the ability to download more malicious files so systems risk being infected by other malware, causing a more damaging infection and compromising security...see What is Poweliks?.Let's start by ensuring it was properly removed. If you are having trouble downloading files with Internet Explorer, follow these instructions to re-enable downloads/reset all Security zones to default. Please download ESETPoweliksCleaner and save it to your Desktop Double-click on ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe to start the tool.Read the terms of the End-user license agreement and click Agree if you agree to them. The tool will run automatically. If the cleaner finds a Poweliks infection, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it...If Poweliks was detected "Win32/Poweliks was successfully removed from your system" will be displayed. If Poweliks was not detected "Win32/Poweliks not found" will be displayed.Press any key to exit the tool and reboot your computer...The tool will produce a log in the same directory the tool was run from.Copy and paste the contents of that log in your next reply.Note: If the log is too long...you may need to split it and use multiple replies in order to post all the information.

I recently used registry cleaner/performance enhancer software from Uniblue. It seems to have worked very well, but my recycle bin is now full of cab files, some of which are quite large. Can I permanently delete them, or should I save them in case of future problems? All of my apps seem to be working fine.
Thank you.

It won't hurt anything to leave them in the recycle bin for a while, this will allow you to see if anything is missing that you may need.

Just wondering what everyone rushes to install on a fresh install of Windows. If this type of thread has been done already, sorry feel free to merge.

I tend to format and reinstall so often that I keep all my apps on a USB stick install them all then use File Hippo's update checker to update anything that's been updated since I put the installers on my stick, I also copy the new installers over to my stick for the next time I reinstall.

My first install is Anti-virus, which used to be Avast but i'm now using MS security essentials. I let it update and scan then reboot install any available Windows updates.

Second install is Firefox which is my favorite browser and I use to surf around while windows update is running.

After closing Firefox my third set of installs are plugins: Java, Flash Plugins (IE & non-IE), Shockwave, Adobe Air, and Python.

The rest are:

7-zip: Great utility for handling all kinds of archives (doesn't integrate into the shell well on Windows 7 yet)

Abiword: Light weight word processor. For the most I use this to compose longer blog posts and replies to private messages. It beats launching Open Office.

Audacity: Program for manipulating audio files. Mostly use this to cleanup intro and outro gaps on rips.

Any Video Converter: Pretty simple and easy to use video converter so I can play them on my Zen.

Ccleaner: An awesome temp/internet files cleaner.

Google Chrome: I use this as my secondary browser.

Yep, we're already talking 10.1 already:

http://www.theverge.com/2015/4/7/8364355/microsoft-redstone-windows-updates

While Microsoft used the Windows Blue codename for Windows 8.1 and Threshold for Windows 10, the software giant is planning to use Redstone for its 2016 plans. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is planning two updates to the core of Windows in 2016, one in the summer and one in fall. These updates will largely be designed for new hardware and devices that run Windows, and will be targeted at the Xbox, Surface Hub, phones, HoloLens, Microsoft Band, Office, and other products that rely on the core of Windows. Redstone is the codename for the updates and a reference to Minecraft, the game Microsoft acquired last year. The Redstone name was first revealed by Neowin.
