Recently created files missing from Explorer

Q: Recently created files missing from Explorer

I don't think I'm imagining this...

When I have just created a new file, or downloaded it, or moved it from one folder to another, or renamed it, I have the impression that it doesn't show in Windows Explorer. It looks as if it's just not there. You can't find it by browsing, nor by searching. But if you try to create the file again (with the same name) you get an error saying you can't do that, because there is already a file here with the same name. I suppose the file shows up in Explorer some minutes or hours or days later. I have not researched exactly how long it takes. But this is extremely annoying.

Have you seen the same thing?

Is there a solution?

Does Microsoft know this problem exists? Can we expect a solution within the foreseeable future?

Thanks - Rowan

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to get a bat file that decides which kind of backup to do by comparing the sizes of the most recent full and differential backups.
This is what I am working with:
1) I store copies of my backups online. Due to my online storage provider's 2GB file size upload limit, I use Cobian Backup's ability to set a max size for each backup zip file so it automatically spans backups across multiple zip files. I end up with 5-10 2GB zip files for a full backup.
2) Cobian Backup names their backups the same way whether it is a full or differential backup. They advise using their log to tell which is which. The only way to tell which is which is to look at their the size, so I put fulls into a folder called Fulls and differentials into a folder called Diffs.
3) Cobian names the files "SourceFolder yyyy-MM-dd hh;mm;ss.zip" then the spanned files' extensions begin .z01, .z02, etc. with the same filename as the original.
I want the bat file to do differential backups until they reach 50% of the size of a full, then do a full instead. This is what I've go so far, but it only gets the size of one file into a variable so there's still a long way to go...

set filepath=c:\
set filename=testfile
set fileextension=.txt
dir /-c "%filepath%%filename%%fileextension%" | find "%filename%%fileextension%" > c:\temp.txt

I've got a situation here whereby .TMP files are appearing in network directories, and the files are going missing. The size of the TMP file matches the original file.
I'm trying to narrow down the issue, because I think there may be two problems here.
1. Offline Files are enabled, to allow profile redirection.    It seems that this is also by default, is allowing Clinet Side Caching when there are network issues.  Does the original file (.doc for example)  get renamed
as a HR234.TMP for example when the Slow link detection sees slow performance?
2.  If the above TMP file is created when there are network issues, should this resolve itself (sync itself back to the network) when performance improves?
Currently we are in a situation where we have a department that have files missing from many network shares, all the missing files seemlingly replaced with a .TMP file, so do we have to go round to every machine in the department, and manually
sync them to resolve this?

I have it seems contracted a virus. I tried running "Regcure" which said that I had over 2000 corrupted files. I fixed them but still would get the QPServices Entry Point error on start up. Yesterday I finally got a router and adapter (Microsoft Base Station and USB adapter [11b]) and setup went smoothly. My dad and I setup WEP security and the other stuff. Now, here's where my question pops up... I start my computer and I get into my home network. I'll go on the web for a brief moment of time and suddenly I lose the signal. I restart the computer, get the signal again, but then it cancels out again. Is there any way to fix this so I dont have to go restarting all the time? My dad's computer (the one hooked to the router) is working perfectly.

Dad's computer: Windows 2000
Mine (the one hooked up to the wireless adapter): Windows XP Home

If you need more info just ask. I dont know if this is enough or not.

A:Question about my recently created network

More info:

My Base Station doesn't read any other devices on the network while the adapter on my computer reads a device (has the same IP as base station). I dont know if that helps.

I had been the only user on my machine, but I decied to create another account so my house mates can use my computer without potentially screwing up my stuff.

I had been using the default admin profile--stupid i know, but it didn't matter.
to be able to create the profile for my housemates i had to create an admin account first, which i did for myself. I lost all my prefernces and setting and stuff, but was able to get most of them back by going into the default profile and grabbing all the application data.

things are working fine for the most part. except for 2 things:

1. when i download things from firefox they don't actually show up on my desktop even though that is where they are supposed to download to.

2. i'm hainvg trouble connecting through my FTP client to the various servers i use. it will connect once after i start windows, but once i break the connection it wont connect again. i've tried multiple ftp clients (FTPx and Filezilla) and the problem is the same in both. I've restarted my network several times as well.

other than getting a new monitor changing the user accounts is the only major thing i've done to my computer recently.

any ideas?

Ok so my buddy's ancient xp laptop has failing video. I logged onto it as an administrator and shared all the users documents. I proceeded to another pc in the house running Vista and created an administrator account with the same credentials as the laptop's then copied (mostly I used copy but for a few folders I used the move command) over the network the primary users profile folder. It took two attempts. It failed to connect the first time but succeeded after I returned to the laptop and disabled simple file sharing and gave the laptops administrator's user account I shared the folders from security permissions to all user folders in question.

I had my friend's girlfriend verify all her pictures were in place on the Vista PC and they were. I felt like "see I do know my stuff". They aren't computer people and have alot of old failing machines I keep going for them. I do this for a living and must have donated a not insignificant amount of time keeping their aging stuff going and I've had a string of having to tell them I simply couldn't make things like HD transcoding and playback run "any more better" or that I couldn't software fix failing hardware on their aging collection of machines. So I was happy for the successful move.

My bud's girl ended up staying on the PC's Admin's profile FaceBooking and reminiscing about the irreplaceable pictures that absolutely needed to be saved from the laptop. The ones of a recently lost loved one the lo... Read more

I am having some explorer problems caused by malware and spyware removal that was recently completed.
I have XP with the SP2 . The OS was loaded by Dell with IE included. in 2002. Since then I have received the auto updated Sp2 installation. Since my most recent infestation and subsequent removal of bugs Comcast has changed to require flashplayer 7 by macromedia. After 2 weeks of searching and following every available suggestion from macromedia to get the download past the security it doesn't seem to want to work out. I have been able to download the Winax.exe to my desktop and unzip. when I start it it asks if I want the active x contol installed and I say yes, it then says installation complete but nothing else happens, no install wiz or anything else. I'm told that the winax.exe is just the Win32 cabinet self extractor. When I try to do an Explorer 6 self diagnostic or repair by clicking install on the ie.ini file from the Windows INF file ( per microsoft instructions ) it tells me that the IEXPLORER.EXE cannot be found and asks me for the correct path to it. I recently used the program HijackThis to remove spyware registries on my mother's computer. While using this program, I accidently deleted required Internet Explorer (IE) files. When I attempt to open and run the IE browser, it executes as if there is no internet connection (my mother runs on Comcast Cable Internet) and it displays me the standord network error detection page. Also, since the deletion of those IE files, my web desktop is in error mode, where which it displays the link to restore the desktop to active desktop. When I click this link, the My Computer directory opens to the web folder. When I try to go to the Repair IE area of Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, I get an error message stating that IE cannot be repaired because of the missing files, which are mshta.exe, msxml3a.dll, and scrrun.dll I then attempted to delete and reinstall IE, but during the installation stage I receive error messages that prevent complete installation. I tried transferring the missing files onto a floppy disk from a friend's computer, but when I try to move the files into the System folder on my mother's computer, the files won't transfer. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, very nice to finally be a part of the community! Hope you can solve my problem.

My first problem was I was missing a winsrv file and kept getting blue screens @ the boot screens, I couldn't even access safe mode. Now, I'm finally able to get on my computer but it feels like its been injected with loads of viruses. When I was finally able to log on, all my start up programs had missing .Dlls and weren't working. I also receive the 'Explorer.exe - Application Error' (The instruction at 0x704b2309 referenced memory at 0x000000b. The memory could not be written). From time to time I'm also oddly getting redirected to different websites when I google something.

I've tried system restore but I got an error saying there were no system restore points to go to . I'm a little bit scared to re install vista because I'm a music producer, and have work that isn't complete yet. I also have over 2000 songs in my library that I just don't have the time get back.

I'm very limited to what I can do on my PC (most things I try end up in "not responding")

My operating system is Windows Vista.

Thank you

I was trying to take a picture on my windows mobile phone on the microSD card plugged in and the whole phone locked up.. No biggie right? Reboot the phone and continue about my business. Well, it reboots and all of my files are gone on the SD card.. But when I check the properties of the card there's still 800MB taken up on the card. So my files are still there but neither Windows 7 nor my Windows Mobile phone can see the files.

Does anyone know how to get the files off of the card WITHOUT having to reformat the SD card? I have a lot of pictures and documents that aren't backed up on a cloud network or locally because I didn't think this would have happened to me. :/

I have a good sony vaio from 2010 with a win7 home premium, 4 Gb Ram, 500Gb HDD, 50 Gb available currently. I know various System32 files are missing from information from a HijackThis Scan yesturday, eg lsass.exe. Explorer.exe does not handle folders well-double clicking should open any folder but instead it defaults to trying to open it with the first available software in the context menue, which happens to be VLC Media player. This is a known problem, to do with registry damage and/or windows explorer, not to do with VLC. I have been dilagent with updating drivers, and am currently using Slimdrivers to identify further improvements to my driver lineup. I will add a scan results from tweaking com windows repair after this post. Avast interenet security and Malwarebytes are up to date and scan have found nothing lately. MBAB had to be uninstalled and reinstalled today due to some sudden loss of the signatures update file(I think), but is running well again now.

Was trying out some new software yesterday, for managing football league tables, and when I later threw out most of them I way too hastily clicked to remove some dll files the programs had been using. Only later when my brain went online again, I realized that was probably a bad idea.

Having rebooted the computer this morning, when I start Internet Explorer (6.0 SP2) I get the "iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" along with the error report option. If I send the report, IE terminates, however if I just pull it to the side I can go on browsing which brings me here. Still would like it all working properly again, so I check the error report for what file might be the problem as I understand to do from having searched the net for a while:

AppName: iexplore.exe
AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180
ModName: unknown
Offset: 0013072f

Obviously if ModName had specified a certain dll file, I would have gone to fix or replace that one but I suppose the file/files (one or two) being gone make them not appear here.

Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem? I've tried to remove IE using my Windows CD and then reinstalling it, with no luck. Other than that what I can think of involves checking through all the dll files IE uses in order to find what's missing and then get a new copy of it. I don't know what files I would have to check for though, so a list of that would be helpful if anyone has it.

I know this has been a topic covered in the Tutorials but neither of the solutions suggested there helped at all. In my Send To folder I already have the Mail Recipient and Compressed (Zip) Folder files and overwriting them with fresh ones did no good. Also, I have checked the registry and there are "pointers" to the correct folders. I don't know what to do now. I am reluctant to do a system restore as I don't know when the items went missing from the Send To menu. I would re-install Thunderbird to see if that solves the problem but it seems a strange coincidence that the Send To Compressed (Zip) Folder option is also missing. Any help would be appreciated.

A:Send To items missing using right click on files in Windows Explorer

So, you're missing some shortcuts from the Send To menu...
Please confirm for me that you have pasted the new shortcuts into "C:\Users\Your Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo" (or go to Run and type in "shell:sendto")

I think that might be linked to Desktop.ini file inside the SendTo folder.

You can try restoring the default shortcuts simply by pasting the contents of this archive (see the attached file) into your SendTo folder (make a backup first) and let me know if that solves it.

As far as I know, the context menu should update itself without having to log off or reboot the computer.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A100- T4A (bought in Canada) running Windows XP Professional (a trimmed down "black" version I got from a friend. I recently got a new motherboard installed, after my computer stopped turning on and I was told that it was the only option.

Since getting it back today my DVD/CD Drive is no longer under "My Computer"and although the drive "reads"the disc when it's inserted (makes some noise), it does not come up anywhere in Windows.

Before the motherboard install I had completely re-formatted my Hard drive and re-installed Windows and I cannot recall anything about the DCD/CD player.

First of all I want to know if this might have occurred during the motherboard install, or if it is a problem of my own that happened during the windows re-install?

I am also not sure about how to find out if the CD/DVD drive is listed in the Device Manager, but the only missing devices are a "Modem device on high definition audio bus" and "SM bus controller" and I don't think that those are related to the DVD/CD drive.

Thanks in advance!

I already searched through alot of threads but could not find anyone having the exact same issue.
We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise with SP1 which is hosting a DFS Namespace.
A customer of us works with his notebook (Win 7 SP 1) and has enabled Offline Files for his personal folder
in the DFS path. The initial synchronisation seemed to work and no sync errors are reported in Sync Center.

Now the problem is, everytime he opens a document from his DFS path and saves it, a .tmp file gets
created there and doesnt disappear. Not even after reboot. As far as i know it happens with Word, Excel and PDF documents.

If I log on to the server and browse to his path, i cannot see those .tmp files, only he can see it.
If I try to delete those files from his notebook I get an error "File is no longer located in... Verify the item´s location and try again".
What I have tried so far:
If Offline Files get disabled, those .tmp files disappear. On activating they are visible again.
Tried "Delete temporary files" from Sync Center -> Manage Offline Files -> Disk Usage. Nothing happened.
I tried to repair Office, didn´t help.
The only Group Policy Settings we have relating to Offline Files are "Synchronize all offline files before logging off"
and "Allow or Disallow use of the Offline Files Feature" which is enabled.

Would be nice if someone can get me into the right direction to fix this issue.

im running a windows xp home edition.

usually whenever i run programs the shortcuts would be left on my start menu. so say after running several programs, like for example, adobe audition, divx player and ccleaner, on the start menu would appear the programs which had just been recently run.

if i right click the start menu and go to customize, i can select the number or programs to be displayed on my start menu.

so yup, usually the recently run programs would display but then it disappears like it emptied itself from the menu.

so my question being is, whats up with my start menu and why does the recently run programs list keep disappearing. is there a way to fix this?

any help is great!

I have read what I think is every thread on this site regarding this issue and have every tried tweak and tutorial to get the programs to display, including tweaks to the Regristry. Regardles of what I have done, I just can't get the Start Menu to display Recently Used Programs. The only things that appear are those programs that I pinned to the Start Menu.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive searched and I saw this problem listed in 2004 but with no solution.

After useing a few maintenence programs my list of recently used programs dissappeared and doesnt reappear. Does anyone know any good places to look to try and solve it?

Ive checked the standard things - start menu properties, etc. but no luck.

thx in advance

SanDisk flash drive. Used it's s/w to create encrypted vault. Placed some apps and docs in it.
When I opened it up the next day one doc was gone.
Did a search on whole pc.It turned up with an Internet Explorer icon next to it (!?) no date, type, size or folder.
Ran Recuva with no luck.
Whe I try to open it I receive this warning: "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe"
Any suggestions?

Well, just found a relatively recent backup of the document. It will do.

Hi All,
We've had MSFT Threat running over 30 days now.  2 virtual VMs, one running console the other gateway.  The gateway has a mirrored network port back to 1 of 2 virtual domain controllers.  I did a packet capture on the mirrored port and
traffic is coming through from the domain controller.  I see users, memberships and password info but I'm missing a lot of other stuff.  What could be causing this?  Thank you.

Some things I can't see are:
User Activity - No activity
Computers recently logged onto by this user - None
Recently accessed resources - None

Sometimes when I pull up Explorer, my files and folders listed are not ordered by name. They seem to be ordered by last used. This is a waste of time to me. I can't find anything by last used!

Is there a way to tell Windows - always order by name and never order by last used?

I went directly from XP to Windows 7.

One of the options on the XP start menu was "Documents" which listed "My Documents" and "My Pictures" at the top (never used). Below that was the 10 most recently accessed files. The most recent files was extremely useful.

In the W7 navigation pane there is a "Documents" selection but it doesn't list the most recently accessed files.

How do I get a listing of my most recently accessed files added to the W7 start menu or taskbar?

Thanks for any help on this.

A:Most Recently Accessed Files

Right click on taskbar go to properties start menu tab then hit the customize button look for Recent items check it hit OK & apply will be in the start menu

Edit: & check the box for "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar"

Does anyone know what registry value I need to add to get the "Recently used Files" checkbox ungrayed. I have OfficeXP and in Excel and Word (probably all of them) the checkbox to list recently used files is grayed out! What gives?? There must be a registry value under the office key for either the Current user or Local machine to allow me to set this value and see a list of files at the bottom of the File menu.

BTW, I searched MSDN and got the same as the help file that all I have to do is check that box. Nothing about it being grayed out.

I found a similar problem reported on your site. I have deleted thousands of dll that were 93,184 bytes or 0 bytes in size. However, I need to get rid of what's creating them. This is my son's computer and it hasn't bee used in a few weeks but this worm filled up the C: drive. I ran Hijack This and I'll put the log in this post.

I recently moved many files from one drive to another. And now that all the files have transferred, none of them will open. I get error messages. I can't view pictures, I cant open word documents, can't open zipped files, etc. They usually tell me I don't have access to them or to make sure they aren't in use by another program.

Is there some way to restore or recover these files?

A:having problems with recently moved files

Just to be sure - transfer them back to the original drive and see if you can open them..

What kind of drive is this? Just another hard drive? External?

If it tells you that the file is in use - you can use a program called Unlocker to help that. .

I have received over a hundred Mp4 files from a friend's external hard drive - however the files had recently been the victim of a format, and downloaded software was used to restore the files (to my friends HD) - which were then transferred to my hard drive. I've not been able to get them to work. I have tried Windows Media Player, and followed all the prompts for codecs, downloaded them to no avail. I've tried Quicktime (error 2048) , and followed all prompts to get the files working - with no luck. I've downloaded VLC Media Player - no result. I've also tried converting the mp4 files to AVI - they cannot be converted (an error is recorded). I assume the files have been corrupted in their recovery from formatting (?). Is this common when retreiving files?

I cannot accept defeat yet - there is just too many files (1000's hours of video) to be lost. Can anyone help? Thanks very much in advance!

My Hard drive is Buffalo 1tb 2.0 USB - purchased last week.
I'm running Visa.

A:Recently transfered mp4 & AVI files not working

It sounds like your files are FUBARd; try searching the tools at http://www.videohelp.com/tools
to see if you can find any video correcting apps (MPEG-Corrector.exe is an example). If the headers have been corrupted, then you might be able to restore these and get some of the video back, but it's unlikley that you'll get smooth playback.

Hi, i hope you will all be patient with me, i have had my laptop for a while but never used it hardly as was using my desktop until it died on me a couple of days ago........

Anyway i have downloaded a couple of folders into a sub folder in my Documents, that is fine and i can open them ok, but i want to move some of them to a different folder for my small external which is plugged in, when i do go to do that it comes up that
'Could not find this item' 'This is no longer located in C:\Users\Katie\Documents\Scrap Verify the items location and try again' But i am in there where the folders are?

I looked around and found the files that were inside these folders
are sitting in my 'Recently Changed' folder which is under 'Searches'

What did i do wrong, or how did they get there and how can i stop it!

Thanks for any help it will be so appreciated

A:Help with files going to recently changed folder

The "referrences" you are talking about are "icons" to a previously opened item, whether they are there or not.

What you need to do is open the file again form it's new location (external disk) & ignore or delete the old referrences to the previous files i.e clear document history etc.

Are you ok with this or do you need more information on clearing document information?

Hi all!

In the last months, my recently viewed files are no longer updated in Vista Home Premium edition. Occasionally appear some new music files I listened to, some pictures I saw, a few of Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Office files I opened and worked with but just a minority (cca. one of every 50).

I posted another problem about ghost folders as well. I guess these are somehow connected and started to occur parallelly.

If there is already post about irregularity about recently viewed files I am sorry I could not find it because the search keeps giving me fatal errors or no response.

Because I don't want Flash Player Utilities running at startup I have renamed the 2 files that run at startup:

Somehow they got created again. The ones I renamed are still there but somehow the original files are back in the folder again.

I want this disabled!
There are no references to this in any of the 'Run' registry entries and I don't see a Service for this either.
Anyone have an idea how to prevent this annoying piece of garbage from recurring?

A:FlashUtil Files Keep Getting Created.

FYI, I have them running as well. The run at startup may be required for the Flash program to function properly when you open your browser. I also see no easy way to disable it; and, if disabled, Flash might not function properly work when you opened your browser and surfed to a site that requires Flash. With that said, if you don't like it running at start-up, and you don't need Flash, why not just uninstall it? Good luck.

I have two systems, one with vista ultimate 32bit and the other vista 64bit home premium.

I have decided to run Kaspersky internet security + Malwarebytes (scanner only) + SUPERantispyware (scanner only) on both

Maybe Truealarm force field when a 64bit version comes out, not going to run it now though.

My question is that I have read that these programs create files or something that are not erased on their own. Is this true and if so what is the best program to take care of this?

I upgraded to Win10/Office 2016 from Win7/Office 2013. At the same time, I changed my web mail (Gmail) from POP3 to IMAP. Since the upgrade, Outlook creates *.ost data files instead of *.pst data files.

As far as I am able to determine, *.ost files are a product of or are otherwise related to an Exchange server, with which I am not associated., i.e., I am using my home custom PC. I also log in to Win10 with a local (vs. Microsoft) account. In Outlook, Work Offline in Send/Receive preferences is grayed out and red Xed; the Outlook icon in the task bar is also red Xed.

All of my searches about this issue relate it to Outlook behavior with an Exchange server. Not being on an Exchange server, I can find no solutions. When I first set up Win10, I logged on using a MS account but no longer do so. Nevertheless, I am wondering if I am tied to MS servers.

My question: however I accomplish it, how do I tweak Outlook to create *.pst data files instead of the *.ost data files.

Thanks for your consideration,

A:Outlook *.ost files being created instead of *.pst

Hi Monk,
*.pst files are for POP3 accounts, whilst *.ost files are for IMAP accounts. Nothing to worry about - everything's fine.
