Windows 7 upgrade tips for Inspiron 1420

Q: Windows 7 upgrade tips for Inspiron 1420

I just finished upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit from Vista 32-bit (which came with my machine) on my Inspiron 1420, by using the custom installation from a Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade disc. I was kind of intimidated about necessity of 64-bit driver since there is no 64-bit support option on Dell's website. So having gone through it successfully now, I thought I would share how I did it for those who may be thinking about the upgrade.
Chipset, Audio and 3945abg Wireless:
Although Dell does not list support for 64-bit drivers for the Inspiron 1420 on its driver homepage, there are three drivers on that page that do support both Windows Vista 32-bit and 64-bit. These drivers are for the Intel Chipset, Sigmatel Audio and the Intel 3945abg wireless card. Note that the Inspiron 1420 booted fine for the first time after the Win7 OS was installed, and the wireless card and audio were functioning with the Win7 native drivers. So the Dell drivers are not absolutely necessary. However, I decided to install the Dell chipset and wireless drivers from the 1420 driver page in case they would be more efficient.
Touchpad and Quickset:
Now, Dell's 1420 driver page does not have 64-bit drivers that may be used for the touchpad, quickset functions (external audio buttons) or video card. After booting Win7, I found that my touchpad lacked the scroll features and only the mute button for quickset worked. However, no quickset graphic popped up when the quickset buttons were used either. Fortunately, Dell provides touchpad and quickset drivers for Windows 7 64-bit for the Inspiron 1545. I downloaded and installed these drivers with success. As far as I can tell, the scroll features and external quickset buttons function fully with the 1545 drivers.
Video Card:
Finally, the video card. I have the NVIDIA 8400M GS. In the past, I do not believe that the nvidia website offered support for this card. In any case, there is a Windows 7 64-bit driver on their website that supports this card and worked for me. Note that the nvidia website recommends updating the bios of the computer to version, A09 (available on Dell's driver page). I had updated to the newest bios, version A10, and the driver seems to be compatible with this version.
For what it's worth, I also installed 2x2GB (for 4GB total) of DDR2 RAM prior to the install, and the OS recognizes all 4GB.
I hope this helps some other Inspiron users who may be interested in upgrading their OS. Although I have not used the OS a whole lot yet, the machine seems completely stable and functions well. Good luck!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I'm going to be doing this in a couple days. Which version of the Dell Notebook System Software (NSS) did you use? The version for the 1420 seems to be for vista 32-bit with no 64bit option.

Hello members of the Tech Guy forum. I've encountered a problem with my Windows Vista Inspiron 1420. I started it up earlier today, but after a restart, the screen just loads the loading screen, and then goes to a blank dark screen. It's on because I see the light on the screen as low as it is, but it just doesn't take me to the login screen.

It is essential I fix this computer without completely restoring it; can someone please provide me any solutions for this horrid problem?

Thank you.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 that I upgraded to Windows 10 -64bit a few months ago.  Has anyone succeeded in getting all hardware work under Win10 on this machine.  I know this laptop is pretty old and Dell does not provide drivers for Win7 and Win10 for this model (which I think is not really cool on their part).
Most of my hardware pieces work except the MultiCard reader (the slot that reads SD cards, etc).  The machine sees the hardware in Device Manager, reports it as working fine, but when I insert the card, the file manager does not detect a new drive at all.
Anyone succeeded getting Multi-Care Reader to work under Win10?  Perhaps drivers from other laptop models might be suitable?

Could removing the RTC battery fix this? (Someone please correct me if im wrong)
The RTC battery is a small battery inside the computer that keeps the clock running on the computer, and also, when removing it for 5-10 mins, all the passwords and CMOS (BIOS) settings will be cleared. Hopefully that'll clear that update thing.

If i'm wrong however, then i dont know any other way than to reinstall the computer with the disc (Some computers can reinstall themselves from the BIOS: Maybe this computer can too?), and since you dont have the disc, then i think you've got quite the dillemma.

Anyways, if nobody corrects me, i guess it'll be worth giving the RTC battery a shot (Unless you got any passwords you dont want to lose). You can find out where it's located in the computer's usermanual on Dell's webpage ;)!

Good Luck

I left my Dell Inspiron 1420 on overnight and when I checked it the next morning it was completely dead. It was operating on AC power, without the battery in.
The AC adapter light was out when it was attached to the laptop. When I disconnected the adapter from the laptop and switched on the mains, the light came on, and it like it could function normally. However, once I connect it to the laptop, the adapter light goes out.
The laptop cannot power on on battery alone, or with battery and AC power connected either. The battery does not charge either.
The laptop gives no response (no lights no sound) when the power button is pushed. Even without any peripherals attached, the laptop cannot power on at all.
I had not installed any new hardware devices or software, except for the fact that I do leave my laptop on overnight quite often. I do not think it could be due to overheating as the laptop temperature has never gone above 'uncomfortable to touch' levels of heat, and I always use a notebook cooler.
What could have caused this problem?

A:Dell Inspiron 1420 cannot power on at all

Unless it's the power adaptor that's actually faulty?

Try removing the power adaptor and battery
Hold the power ON button on for 30 secs (dispersing all internal voltage)
Plug the power adaptor back in, and then try turning it on.

Did it work?

There's a lot of backstory to this issue, stuff that I've tried and all, but I'll try to cut out the fluff and the reasoning and just give the relevant info:

First, specs:

Dell Inspiron 1420, Vista Home Premium 32-bit, T7500, 8400M GT(S?), 250 GB Hard Drive (self-upgraded), 3 GB RAM (self-upgraded), Logitech Cordless Elite Duo external keyboard and mouse (5-6 years old but still decent).

Now, history:

I took the computer apart for the first time about 3 weeks ago to clean the heatsink+fan - cleaning the fan required taking out the MoBo, so everything's been disconnected and reconnected - everything worked fine after the cleaning, though...

...four or five days ago, when I installed Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit in a new 15 GB partition cut from the Vista partition. The keyboard was definitely working directly before the installation, because I used the laptop without the externals to burn the Ubuntu Live Disc. I used the Logitech, however, during the installation. After the installation, the keyboard would not work with Ubuntu, Vista, or the BIOS. Yes, I have tried reseating the ribbon connection to the MoBo, about a million times now. Long story short, I've updated the BIOS, checked all of its settings, removed Ubuntu, reclaimed the partition for Vista, fixed the Master Boot Record, etc. and the keyboard still doesn't work.

The twist:

After installing Ubuntu, my computer started beeping at me after the BIOS loaded, which it still does. ... Read more

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 and it has been working great until the other day. As I was using the computer the keyboard failed and I was only able to use a couple of keys. I re-started the computer hoping that it would mend the problem, however it did not and now I am stuck at the password section to start windows. I cannot type in my password due to the malfunctioning keyboard. I re-booted the computer several times and during the re-boot process the computer beeps very loudly which it has never done before. I am able to get into the F2 setup but the arrows are not working properly either and the F12 button does not work. I am not sure what to do or even how to get back into my computer to even fix the problem. If anyone has any suggestions they would be greatly appreciated

Hi All,

First of all I will apologise in advance as i`m guessing that you will have been asked this before.

Stupid me bought the above mentioned laptop of Ebay this week. It need a system password. I have trawled the net for solid 2 days now looking for answers and cant find any.
You can not boot anything off it as it imediatly wants the system password.
Dell will not give me the master password as I do not know the originators info.
I now have the laptop stripped down completely.
Please can some one tell me which chip to look for ( to short out ) and where it is on the 1420 motherboard?
Any help would be appreciated
Best regards

I have a Dell Inspiron 1420 running Vista 32bit.

I recently had a hard drive failure and reinstalled vista and all of my drivers. everything went well except for this issue with the backlight. on battery power I can control the backlight with Fn+up/down. however, once i plug it in, the backlight dims to the lowest setting and i can't change it. the brightness graphic still appears when i use Fn+up/down and the level on the bar changes, but it has no effect on the brightness.

I am 100% certain that it's not an issue with the backlight. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and getting the latest updates from Dell. the power management application also doesn't solve the problem. I have found a handful of other people describing the same problem using google, but no solutions.

I'm an engineer by trade and no stranger to problem solving, but I've spent too much time on this as it is and figured I have nothing to lose by posting here. can anyone give me a solution (or a cause)? any help would be much appreciated.

I just got my new Dell Inspiron 1420 with Vista today and immediately had problems. The screen freezes, not on the page its on, but with lines across both ways. I have to press OFF button and once computer is off, I restart and it goes back to wherever it was. This first happened the first time I turned it on and started to set up my new account. It has continued to happen every 5 to 10 minutes. Dell online tech support helped and said to upgrade Video card and BIOS. I did without anyhelp. It still freezes. They then told me to run a diagnostic test, I did the first part with no problem. There were no errors reported and the screen did not freeze for about one hour while test ran. Then when switched to windows system for extended test it froze. I repeated same thing 3 times and each time it went to windows system, it froze. It has frozen 3 times while I write this and I've had to turn off and on (comes back to same page). Can anyone help me? When not frozen (less than 5 min) it runs great!! Thank you!!

I purchase a Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop a few months ago with a Targus AMU02US plug and play retractable external mouse. It worked fine for several weeks and then abruptly stopped (the mousepad continues to have no problems). The mouse battery is strong, and the USB port has no problem with other devices such as a flash drive. I tried a new logitech laptop mouse - still nothing. Both mice work fine on my desktop computer, so they aren't the problem. The only thing I can conclude is that it is a Vista software/settings issue. I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate on an Intel duo core 32-bit system. Does anybody have any ideas? I'm completely stumped.

A:Dell Inspiron 1420 power problem

fault can sometimes be caused by things such as bad memory or an internal overheat problem, dependant on how techie you are, it would require the stripping of the unit to check such things.

memory is usually accessible from underneath the unit, remove the memory boards and reseat them, if it still doesnt work then it would require the strip and check...

Laptops have lots of screws and can be difficult to strip down, Dell do offer strip down instructions on their site for each unit.

Ok not sure if this is a hardware or software issue but ill try here. My laptop suddenly shut down yesterday while listening to some music and possibly downloading a few files. Wheb I tried to start-up I got to the windows boot screen and it would shut down from there. I left it on a memory diognostic and came back to it frozen, rebooted and choose to boot log on startup up until failure (already tried safe mode). Somehow the laptop started but was very slow and when I put a flash drive in it shut down. Tried a normal boot and it worked but again Windows.7 was slow. Also, my fan was not working the first time I got into windows but on the 2nd boot I was scanning for virus's and the fan suddenly came on and is now consistenly blasting despite it being cool. I have it on a cooling pad so the fan should not be on. Lot of information. Any help is appreciated. Don't know if its a virus/spyware or hardware issues, maybe bios or something...

Hi All,

(sorry to post this message here & on device drivers, I realize this forum will be more suitable for this post...)

I bought a new Dell Inspiron 1420 with the following specifications :

Intel® Core?2 Duo mobile processor T5750, 3GB DDR2, 250GB HD.

When loading vista I get this error with no ability to solve this issue whatsoever.

the error message number is 0x0000124, which I see other people posted threads about too,
but I can't get any usable information which can help me solve my problem.

I tried re-installing vista, downgrading to XP, updating the bios, updating the drivers.
Went through Dell's customer care's support personnel without any luck.

In addition, I ran all the diagnostics software that came with the laptop -
there's a pre-loaded software that checks all the devices and memory,
and to be done with I ran windows memory diagnostic.

All the diagnostic software came with nothing - all tests passed and all came up with nothing.

I have some dump files which I don't know how to process.

Can anyone help me shed some light on this issue ?
Could it be a hardware problem, what is more likely (motherboard, other peripherial ?)

Hello, I am the owner of Dell Inspiron 1420 with NVidia Geforce 1420 128 mb.
I've installed Vista Ultimate x64 with all the drivers automatically detect and windows functioning normally. But the only problem I am facing now is the graphics memory which is important for me to be able to play games which requires 256 mb graphics memory.

My vista uses approx. 1872 mb of shared memory which is absolutely crazy leaving me with 128 mb of graphics memory. Before, I got 256 mb of graphics memory in windows xp and i can play almost any latest games. I've also wondered, is there any way to change the graphics memory size or the shared memory size? Even i've updated my BIOS, still it wont allow me to change it... need help, Anyone???

MDruss, if I'm understanding this correctly you wan't to change your card from 128mB to 256mB in order to play games? (Correct me if I understood wrongly)

You cannot change the memory of your card, if you want more dedicated graphics memory, you will have to buy a new card, but make sure it is compatible with your motherboard and that your power supply is powerful enough (if you post the specs of that dell, we can help you find one...)

hello, i barely had my laptop for 2 months and i already have problems. so far i've been dealing with these issues:

1. can't revive the laptop from sleep mode and had to manually turn it off. as far as i know, it's either the critical updates from microsoft or a vista thing. i figured that microsoft will come out with an update to fix all that.

2. the laptop would unexpectedly freeze, i've tried to wait it out and eventually i'm forced to a manual shutdown.

3. the other time it froze there was a prompt asking to diagnose the memory(??). (i'm not sure what it was because i was so surprised and i've never had that happen to me.) the scan didn't find anything wrong.

4. the first time i used my webcam, the blue screen flashed and rebooted the laptop.

i'm not very computer savvy, so i don't really know what happened. i'm thinking i'd return the laptop back to dell for repairs or try to do a system restore back to when it first arrived.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:dell inspiron 1420: can't sleep to blue screen

Welcome Robyn, I just received a Inspirion 1520 and love it. All your problems are different so it is difficult to resolve them. I would suggest a system restore back as close to the date as your laptop arrived. I would also try to update your drivers.

i have a dell inspiron 1420. i've had it for about 1.5 years. i can honestly say i don't treat it very well: i'm a highschool student that procrastinates a lot so every late night i have is a late night for my laptop too.

today i tried turning on my laptop, however, it got me to a black screen with grey text telling me: windows recovery error. it's saying stuff like windows failed to start, and it's asking whether i should launch startup repair or start windows normally. when i launch startup repair, it tells me the problem cannot be solved and just restarts my computer. when i try starting normally, it goes to the black loading screen and then the screen just goes black and stays black. sometimes i get the occasional blue screen of death when i try the startup repair. it says:

stop: c0000218 {registry file failure}
the registry cannot load the hive (file):
or its log or alternate.
it is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

i tried rebooting it with my dell windows vista cd, and it lets me install vista except if i do i will lose all my files which i do not want to do. if someone could please help me that would be great!! thanks!!

Hello felawful,
Have you tried starting in safe mode ?, (press F8 at bootup), if you can, then try a system restore, also on the Vista disk before it goes to install there should be a repair option, take a look and post your results, good luck.

I need serious help here...it's driving me crazy! You see, I have some files on my laptop that I would like to share to my desktop. Reason why is because I hate my laptop screen and would like to view these on my desktop's monitor (I know that I can just hook up the monitor to the laptop but my computer illiterate parents aren't allowing me to do that)...moving on...

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP1 (on both computers). I've done the whole chabang with Network and Sharing Center. I've turned on file sharing, network discovery, printer sharing, public folder sharing, and more. But my desktop can't connect to my laptop!!! The desktop is connected to my router through Ethernet and my laptop is connected through wireless. I don't have wireless at all on the desktop, so how can I get these to connect?

One thing that did work was going into Windows Firewall and enabling TCP/IP port 445. But that shared my whole Users directory with the desktop, which is not what I wanted. It stopped working, too. Just randomly stopped working.

Your parents won't let you disconnect a monitor cable, but they have no problem with you configuring a network that could open the computer up to viruses, connection problems, and all sorts of other issues? No parents are that computer illiterate.

For about two months now, the touchpad on my Dell Inspiron 1420 has not worked properly. The touchpad does not respond to touch (at all) nor do the buttons work. Additionally, the touchpad driver does not show up in ?Device Manager? at all. The files do still exist under ?Dell Drivers? though and the application can be found under ?programs?.

So far, I have:

-uninstalled and re-installed the touchpad driver (many times). If I remove all files and re-install the drivers, and reboot as instructed by the prompts; the touchpad will usually work until I put the computer to sleep or restart it. Then, once again, no response at all. The icon in the bottom right of the desktop also disappears, as does the driver in ?device manager?. The files still exist though in ?dell drivers? and under ?programs?.

-started the computer in safe mode. The touchpad works fine anytime I am in safe mode.

-disabled all programs (programs that had that option) that run on start up. I did this thinking that a start up program was controlling the touchpad since it starts fine in safe mode. The Alps driver (for the touchpad) that should appear under start up programs does not and I have never disabled it when it did show up. Stopping all programs that run at start up did nothing to fix the touchpad.

-I run AVG anti-virus software every day and have run Ad-Aware antispyware multiple times but this seems to have no effect on the touchpad problem.

I am thinking that maybe that is a 64bit, if so then you are having a driver conflict, i suggest that you make sure you have the right drivers from the Dell website for your Laptop, or check you Even viewer logs to see what could be the cause of that problem.
If that isn't the problem, then lets us know...

started having problems saying display driver igfx has stopped responding and has recovered. the screen has a bunch of black dots on it and will go flicker off and on and keeps saying the display driver igfx.. error. this only happens in normal mode and when the driver is installed, it works fine in safe mode and when the driver is not installed. i have tried various drivers from dell's and Intel's websites, nothing has worked so far. i did reinstall vista hoping that would help fix the problem but it didn't.

the computer is a laptop with vista home premium 32bit, 1gig ram, intel core 2 duo, and mobile intel 965 express chipset.

I'm sorry I didn't know what to put for the subject, and I hope I'm in the right forum. Forgive me if I'm not.

My Dell Inspiron 1420 (Vista) laptop is two years old. About 4 months ago, it started doing something weird. When I'm typing an email, I get a few paragraphs down and the cursor suddenly jumps back up several lines into what I had previously typed and starts typing there. I have to delete the letters and move the cursor back to where I had left off and begin typing again. This happens repeatedly. When I'm writing a private message in Facebook, the same thing happens plus I can only type a few paragraphs and then I can't type any further. Actually, I am typing but the lines are "jumping" and I can't see what I'm typing. It's so hard to describe unless you've seen this in person.

About two months ago, my hard drive crashed. I went to a computer repair guy and he put a new hard drive in and reloaded the software that was on it (which wasn't really anything, as I never did even install my word processing software). Anyway, I was thinking that would solve the problem, but it still does it.

Has anyone come across this or do you understand what I'm explaining that you could help me? It's very frustrating.

Thanks for any help!

Very frustrating. Dell Inspiron 1420 becomes dim anytime I go on battery power. I have been in Power Options many times to adjust power management settings for battery consumption. I have all settings for 100% brightness on battery power -- no change. Any time the laptop is unplugged, the screen brightness dims to a low level -- impossible to read withough scorching headache. Please help if you have recommendations on solving this problem. Thanks - Derek

Please help. I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 1420, Vista Basic. Two days ago, I downloaded a song from limewire. When I tried to play it, my mediaplayer automatically popped out and I guess it asked for something to be updated. I cant remember the file extension. Not sure if it is wmp. My screen froze for 20 seconds but I managed to stop it by clicking on the X button numerous times. I left the laptop on overnight until it became empty. I just turned it on only after work. The computer resumed and I saw that something has been updated. I closed it out immediately. After about 5-10 minutes of surfing the net, I noticed that my Avira Free anti-virus has detected a malware. When I clicked on the "remove" button, it automatically scanned for a virus. I have noticed that while scanning, the page freezes and becomes slower not until the scan has been fully completed. After 2-3 minutes, Avira notified me again of a malware--same file. My mistake is that I failed to copy the said malware. Avira kept on saying that I have to remove the file because it is malicious. I clicked on remove again and my anti-virus tried to scan the file again. It happened more than 3-4 times and I kept on doing the same thing. The screen problem started from there. The actual screen resolution fades slowly and gets back to normal resolution slowly as well. It continuously happened for 5 minutes. And then the screen suddenly begun to blink up and down like when we blink our eyes (that's the best way ... Read more

We only validated the following motherboards that used the onboard GPU = KN548, WK085
Dell is not going to have parts for a 10 year old system. You will need to search the web for a 3rd party seller using those part numbers.
