XP Harddisk Advice

Q: XP Harddisk Advice

Hi, I plan to install a new 40gig harddrive and need some advice...heres my story:

I have a Packard Bell iconnect 1225 and when I got it came preinstalled with Windows Me. For more info on the iconnect click here. When I got it, about three years ago it had a 10gig harddrive with a 1gig partition. If you have a PB you'll know that this is a backup sector which can be launched by booting off a recovery floppy and restores your system back to the way it was when you left the factory. This is really useful and I used it alot back in the Windows Me darkages when it was the best answer to any serious problem and the last time I used it was when I got XP and forgot to download some drivers before installing and had to rollback and then later reinstall. Even though XP is so stable I would still like to keep it and that why I need as much information as possible.
My plan is to go to my local computer store/pc world and ask for a 40gig harddrive to be installed. As the backup (hidden) partition is named D: the new harddrive must be called E: or something else, will this happen by default? I will then use the restore program to go back to Windows Me (Deleting Windows XP and basically cleaning out my system or unwanted rubbish) and then install windows xp again. In the installation I will select that Windows XP to be installed onto the new drive and to format the drive using the NTSC filing system as its better. After its installed I will use XP like normal and should I ever run into trouble simply enter my disk to roll back, I wont use the other disk though so that will have to be set as Slave when its installed.

Can you see anything wrong with my plan?
Thanks in advance
Tarq!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: XP Harddisk Advice

A few things. You want a 40gig HD? Buy one and see if that Packard Bell will support it. Have it installed (or do it yourself) and load XP on it. XP has a built in restore function. The one you are used to that came with the PB is a Recovery Disk. If you own a copy of XP, then you shouldn't need to go through all that riga-moroll. If you really want the security of a "fall back" program, then you can purchase a program like GO-BACK (I think Roxio makes it) and it will do the same thing. The filing system you want is the NTFS verus the FAT32 filling system. XP's System Restore feature doesn't always work as it should in that XP may or maynot have made restore points needed to work. Save all the info you want off your old drive to disks and then you can format that drive also in the NTFS mode and use it as a slave drive to your 40 gig.

Hello all,

I need some advice.

I recently replaced my old harddisk to a new harddisk. The old harddisk has windows xp home and other programs installed.

I did not format the old harddisk, I only took out the old harddisk and replaced it with a new harddisk. I then installed windows xp home to the new harddisk.

While I am installing programs on the new harddisk, I discovered that one of the programs do not allow me to activate the program license because I have previously activated the program on my old windows. I need to do a proper uninstallation to release the license, then I can activate the license of the program in the new harddisk.

My question is, can I take out my current new harddisk, replace it with the old harddisk, boot up as normal into the old harddisk windows, uninstall the program inside the old harddisk, then replace the old hardisk with my new harddisk again.

Will I be able to access the old windows on the old harddisk?
Will it mess up my current windows/programs settings?
Will my current new harddisk windows be able to work as normal after accessing the old harddisk windows?
I thought of accessing the old harddisk as a slave, but I do not know if it is possible to access the old harddisk and do a proper uninstall of the program?
Is there any better way of uninstalling the program on my old harddisk?

Thanks in advance.

A:Accessing Win XP on old harddisk to uninstall programs after installing new harddisk

you have to swap out the drive completely. at no time should you have both hdd plugged in.

repeat, do not run them as master and slave. run each hdd individually at each time only.........

I have an ultraDMA harddisk from compaq. I hope to know what is the ATA and RPM value of my 20GB drive. Is there some software that I can use to check it?

The only 20 GB HDD I could find on the Compaq site is 20GB Ultra ATA 100 Hard Drive (7200rpm)

This was at http://www.compaq.com/products/desktops/options/options_storage1.html
That doesn't mean that there aren't more. The way to know, for certai8n, is to open your system up, and get the part number, or full specs from off the HDD case itself.

My computer came with a 10gig hardrive with Windows Me preinstalled. I upgraded to Windows XP Home Edition and have been very impressed it was well worth the 90 I payed for the upgrade pack! I purchased 64MB of RAM to bring my memory from 64MB to 128MB and my computer hasn't crashed ONCE since I got XP! But having two operating systems on one 10 gig hardrive and lots of preinstalled programs such as office has taken its toll and I was warned the other day that my harddisk was nearly full! I deleted all my unnessesary files and managed to get back 1 gig of space but I'm still not happy and would like to get a new 20gig hardrive. It makes more sense to use my recovery disk to return my computer to the way it was when it left the factory and reinstall windows XP on the new harddrive leaving my old operating system on the old C:\ and installing all my programs into the new harddrive. I have two questions about this:

1) Will my computer become dual-boot which i DONT want to happen I want the same setup as I have know but with XP installed on the new harddrive?

2) Will I be able to call my new harddrive B:\ as I don't have a 5 1/2 floppy drive installed and would prefer to have things organised and call it that, if not what will my drive call itself as default as I already have A,C,D,Q,R drive letters already taken?

1. you can mix any makes of disks. They are all 'compatibel'.

2. the make does not matter. They are all the same since they all come from the same factories in Thailand. I have a dozen different makes and do not notice any difference.

3. except Seagate - one of those just died on me. The first and only disk that died in my installations.

If you lost power whilst transferring, there is a good chance some of the files will have become corrupt.

Re: Win98SE - Intel 465 Mhz

The harddisk in my PC is 8 GB of which only 2,56 GB is still available now.
From I similar PC (done away in the meantime) I still have a 8 GB IDE harddisk.
and want to place it in my PC.
Please mind that I have never opened a PC sofar.

a) I don't know to what electronic circuit-cable it must be connected (wondering about serial and parallel)

b) then this second harddisk must somehow be connected to and made visisable to the system (by cables I think; however what cables, new ones or
already present)

When I tried to google this subject I only found items on partitioning etc, not
about how to get and connect a second harddisk inside a PC.
Furthermore I have no idea whether there are special well-known problems
related to having a seond harddisk installed (e.g. very slow system)

Advises will be highly aprreciated.

Also please suggest a freeware for folder lock (other than folderlock software).

A:Harddisk password

this is set via the bios
as the PC starts it should flash on the screen for a few seconds how to get to the bios/setup
often at this point you press a key to enter
depending on make an model of your PC
could be <F2>or <F10> or <Del> or another key

In the bios will be a section, probably security to set a bios / harddrive password
in some cases just setting the bios also sets the harddrive
BUT
if you forget the harddrive password - remember if you forget the password , you will not be able to access the harddrive , even if you put it into a different pc

Now I am moving to 200GB SATA harddisk. But want to know that there is any way we transfered all the data with OS into the new harddisk so that I dont have to install everything again.

I heard about Ghost software but not clear that they will do this thing properly and Windows XP will detect the new harddisk because if there is any major change in the hardware then it not accept it .

And mostly my harddisk is filled, so how much space these softwares required to make the image.

You posted it in the wrong forum. Please try to get it in the right forum for a faster response, or a response at all.

If the file is 4.6 gigs, its on a dvd and not a cd, but regardless, what file system is that hd formatted in? If its FAT32, right there is your problem, FAT32 can't handle files over 4 gigs in size. You will need to convert the FS to NTFS if you are on a Windows machine.

Would i be able to connect a 200mb Harddisk to my compter, to copy the contents into an image with Norton Ghost. I have IDE CD CDRW and Hardisk already and would make this disk a temp Seconary slave. Cheers guys

A:OLD 200mb HardDisk.

Yes that should work. Just use auto geometry. Mobo's IDE is backwards compatible.

I don't think you would want to keep it on there long after the data was copied off of it, though. Such an old device is just taking up a valuable IDE channel.

Hi,

My laptop internal harddisk is not accessible. The laptop was switched ON and I was holding it in my hand. Suddenly it slipped and fell down. Since then, the harddisk is not accessible. Windows and BIOS are not detecting the harddisc. So, I bought a new harddisc and replaced it with the old one. Then I connected the inaccessible harddisc to the laptop via USB port by purchasing a harddisc casing and connector. But the disc did not get detected. I didnt see it in disk management. I use windows 7 OS. The connector cable I purchased is Y shaped at one end with two USB connectors. The other end has only one connector which goes to the hard disc.
I have data in the harddisc and I need to recover it. Is there any way I can access the harddisc? Please help!

Thanks & Regards,
Phani

First did you use the Usb plug with 2 wires at the computer end ? If not please do so. Also, try it with both Usb plugs in ports at the PC end.

If that doesn't help it looks like the drive is too badly damaged to work.

This is a very hard thing to accomplish and it probably should not be attempted by an average user.

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question. If it is not, I apologise in advance. Just as a matter of interest, is it possible to over defragment one's hard drive? Can it maybe corrupt files? I defragment almost everyday, sometimes even twice or more times a day. Thanks.

A:Harddisk Defragmentation.

If you are talking about Windows XP it should tell you there is no point in defragmenting below a certain limit. If it does that don't bother to defrag - you're just wearing out your hard drive for no purpose.
Assuming everything is working perfectly no harm should come from defragmenting when its not needed but in the real world it does increase the chances of corrupting data through either disc error or power glitches. It's a matter of balancing the risks and the benefits.

examples are:
-It deletes files needed to run a system
-Tracks down your activity and private information
-It also slows down pcs
and many more......

Did she download any AntiVirus program?
several of these at the same time may be the cause of the sluggishness
especially when they are scanning at the same time

I'm trying to figure out how I can interpret this:

\Device\HarddiskVolume7\$mft

for Windows 2000 server

A:harddisk volume

That's the Master File Table - with an NTFS volume, it's what tells the system where on the hard drive each file is located.

If that file gets corrupted, you will get file system errors.

It can be repaired by running a CHKDSK on your drive (alternatively with the /R parameter, to repair bad sectors, or at least move any recoverable data from a bad sector to a new location.)

Hey there

I'm having a weird issue with booting up my computer and I'm hoping to find a solution that does not involve reinstalling windows completely. Might come to that, but first I'm looking for other issues.

To give some context:
A few months ago my primary harddisk started failing. I acquired a new harddisk, installed windows on it and it has been working fine.

When I boot up the computer, I can select between the old and the new windows installation and I've simply been using the new one. I've left the old harddisk plugged in as I had some data on it I wanted to salavage and then I just left it there. I've gotten the data of it and have had no reason to unplug it.

Recently, however, I wanted to unplug the old harddisk as there has been some issues with hangups and I had a suspicioun they were caused by windows (for some reason) reading from the old harddisk.

When I unplugged it I got a "Bootmgr is missing" error and could not boot up. Thus I need to have the old harddisk plugged in in order to boot up windows.

WHich is annoying, as I think the old harddisk is the cause of the performance issues I've been having.

Obviously the new harddisk has not been made bootable by installing windows on it. The old harddisk was plugged in when I installed windows, so that's likely the cause of it (for some reason...?).

Is there any way for me to fix this without unplugging the old harddisk and installing windows again? I'd rather ... Read more

A:Cannot Boot from Harddisk

The Windows installer will put its boot-up code (the bootmgr) on the primary hard drive regardless of the drive that Windows proper is installed on. You can repair this by booting your Windows 7 DVD and running the Startup Repair tool. See Microsoft's how-to article here. Make sure that the original disk is unplugged before attempting this repair.

i bought an external hard disk its western digital 320gb, i observed data transfer rate of that disk is 30-40mbps only but ability of usb2.0 is 480mbps, how come very less data transfer, is there any way to increase it or any other application to increase it.

help me in resolving
thanking you
sandy

A:external harddisk

Transfer rates externally (i.e. USB or Firewire) are recorded in mega bits per second, however ATA and IDE protocols are measured in mega bytes per second. This means 480bp/s translates to 60MB/s (taking into consideration 1 byte = 8 bits). It seems the speeds on external USB drives are bottlenecked at around 40MB/s anyway - so if you're missing out, it won't be by too much.

Speeds also depend on how your external drive (well, inside the enclosure) works and reads the information off the disk. For example, reading from the outer edges of the disk will result in faster transfer rates than if it was reading from the inner part of the disk.

If not under warranty, you will have to call HP and look out for Out of Warranty options and charges are applicable. Whenever the Hard Disk Short/Long DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby  Please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Im trying to make one working laptop out of two identical faulty ones. Everything works fine on the one i've built until I decided to re-install the operating system:

I have two working harddrives to choose from:

1. Appears to be completely full. When trying to delete unused programs and files I came across a huge section of the HD I couldnt access (about 5gb of a 10gb hd). It is a folder with a gibberish title ( something like - 45aqensocviopwme32jklda92). The hard drive appears to only have one operating system, so I ruled out it being another.

2. The other hard drive had two operating systems on but both needed removed. I formatted It and re-installed XP. Two minutes off the end on installation I get a blue screen of death mentioning "atapi" or "kernel" (kernal_stack_inpage_error) depending on what mood its in.

Just need one of the two to function

A:2 Harddisk problems

On number one, did you try deleting existing partitions, and repartitioning the drive prior to a format/reinstall?

The errors on number 2 referencing ATAPI do appear specific to the drive hardware.

You might be better off in the Hardware forum with this; let me know if you want me to move it. There's not much I can personally offer on this issue.

Hi I have a 1Tb SATA hard disk, Iam planning to replace it with a SSD for better performance, is this possible? and if so what is the maximun capacity that can be installed.

A:Harddisk Upgrade possible?

Hi, Basically yes and to make everything simple, please use 1TB SSD. Samsung 850 series is very hot now. Why I say easy/simple, because with 1TB (or larger) you can clone the whole existing HDD (1TB) and the changeover will be much simpler. Regards.

as you see in the picture that there is a needle over the circular disc so my curiosity is that what makes that needle move here and there, and doesn't it will be out of order before the hard disk. doesn't it make scratches while moving so quickly over the disk? please remove my curiosity

I have here a Dell Laptop with a Seagate ST94811A Harddrive. Since the last Windows update, this drive shows also as CD-Rom Drive in Windows Explorer (associated letter D), but not in the Disk Management Utility.
A reset to an older Restoration Point did not solve the problem.
The data on the drive partitions can be accessed without problems.
Already tried to google it up, at no avail.
Any hints?

A:Harddisk showing as CD-Rom in XP

Dont know whats up never heard that before. Windows Explorer does some weird stuf sometimes for everyone. As long as you can access your DATA. Maybe back-up? Just incase it turns into a perminant optical drive - lol

i wouldnt worry to much - its just windows doing its usual tricks

Hi bro, just a question which company's internal hard disk is good and very stable. I have been using seagate for long time, i believe company's reputation has gone.I replaced my 320 gb hdd for several times , even though company gives 5 year warranty but no use.I was replacing my hdd continually and so many times data losses, recently just a weak back my hdd has come from replacement, just with in 5days of time again status of hdd has degraded. I'm really fed off with this hdd(seagate) prior to this same case with 250 gb. So which internal hdd is best(cost effective).

And please let me know that any incompatibility of my system is causing frequent hard-drive failure , I will provide with full specifications of my system. Myself i built this system.

Nvidia 9800gt of 1gb DDR-3

If it's a computer I advice getting an external hard drive, you can get 1TB for like $40, and internally I'd go with Acer, of all the Acer computers I own, none of the hardware has ever failed. Yet, with HP, the HDD, mintor, CPU, fan, and some other stuff, all broke in less than a year.

Hi -

i bought a custom made pc with intel i3 processor, 2 TB or hard disk and 2 GB or ram.

I am not sure why... but i have a felling that 2 GB of RAM is not enough.

FYI
Windows explorer crashed when i visit a specific directory of the a drive. that particular folder has around 100 Videos(Movies) in different formats (mkv, mp4, avi, wmv). The same folder can be accessed through VLC open window.

Problem
Window explorer crashed and asks to restart when opening a specific folder.

A:2 TB of harddisk - what RAM is recommended?

you probably want more, but how about helping us to help you by filling in your system specs>
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

I need the harddisk driver to my HP x2 210 G1 detachable tablet. I try to use the SCCM to deploy a new image to my tablet, but I need the driver to the harddisk. I have spoken to a technician at HP Support, and he told me that the harddisk was on the motherboard and that there was no driver available. I find this hard to believe. Can anyone help me to find this driver?

A:Harddisk driver x2 210

I wish I could help with your pxe boot problem. Have you tested that this particular usb adapter works/boot on other PCs? Our tablet is a "system on a chip (SoC)" so the drivers are bundled together as you see on the HP support page. The chipset download contain the emmc driver as well. . Intel does have newer drivers for a few of the devices, you can get these by using something like windows update minitool. I doubt new drivers will fix your issue since it seems to be a pre-OS boot issue.
