I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Friend of mine gave me her Acer Aspire 5742z-4813 because it fails to boot and eventually asks to repair, which it doesn't. Can't enter safe-mode, either.

Only thing she's said is that her daughter installed Norton 360 a few days before it crashed.

Things I've tried:

At command prompt, ran the following with no effect: bootrec.exe /FixMbr, bootrec.exe /FixBoot, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd, chkdsk /f E:, and finally chkskd /f /r /x.

I also entered BIOS and changed HDD mode to IDE from ACHI. No joy.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Twitter's new initiative at strengthening its platform's security went awfully wrong on Tuesday, when the account of a renowned security researcher was suspended for posting an alleged malicious link two months ago. As it turns out, the offending message was actually a warning regarding a MySpace phishing site.

Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer at Finnish antivirus vendor F-Secure, was taken totally by surprise by a message reading, "This account is currently suspended and is being investigated due to strange activity," when he tried to log into Twitter on Tuesday. As he was later to discover, not only had his account been suspended, but all of his tweets and followers had been also removed.

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

The first place to start is are you getting any error messages when the updates fail? What do the messages state -- for example, do you get any error codes? Please post that information here.

Hi i want to duel boot windows 7 and windows 8.1...i have a 240gb ssd with windows 7 already installed on it....i also have a 2tb storage hardrive and i use this for storage..btw this hardrive did have my windows 7 on it untill i bought the ssd then i ported windows 7 on to the ssd using Paragon Migrate OS to SSD...then i formatted the 2tb drive and have it as a storage drive now.

Ok so my problem is when i split my 2tb storage drive into 2 partitions using AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition ("i intend to use the one partition of about 750gb for windows 8.1") ..however my computer will not boot anymore? i get a Status Oxc0000225 The boot selection failed....i belive this is because the storage drive still has the mbr on it from when it had windows 7 on it...in fact i know it is still on there but i dont know how to delete the mbr from the storage drive???

If i split the storage drive into 2 partitions the computer will not boot....if i disconnect the storage drive and boot with only the ssd it will boot again my pc boots again....also if i rejoin the storage drive back to one partition and reconnect it..it boot fine with it connected again....so there for some reason windows on C drive does not like my storage drive having a different size or being 2 partitions and it appears it needs some information from the storage drive if conceted to be able to have successful boot??... could this have something with the old MBR on my storage drive from when windows 7... I've updated to the latest bios on my new mobo ( Gigabyte z97x SOC Force ) and ive done a fresh install of windows several times on the SDD. I also ran crystal disk to check health on the SDD and it came back healthy.

It seems mostly my boot problems are linked to plugging in the two other HDDs, though I've no idea why this would be, and how to fix it? Is it a motherboard problem or a HDD problem?

Any help greatly appreciated.

My story:  The hard drive failed in my Y510P a few weeks ago, so I installed a 512 GB M.2 NGFF ZTC SSD.  (I bought the SSD a few months ago when hard drive first had symptoms, but then held off installing it due to lack of time and because HD passed diagnostic tests with no apparent problems).  Anyway, after the HD finally failed, I found I could boot it to BIOS and see the hard drive information, even though I couldn't boot the HD.  I originally had Windows 8.1, but had upgraded to Windows 10.  Prior to upgrading to Windows 10, I had backed up the recovery partition to a USB drive.  After physically installing the SSD, I tried using this recovery USB to clean install Windows 8.1 to the SSD (thinking Windows would then prompt me to upgrade to Windows 10 again), but the recovery software was unable to do that (so what good is the recovery software if it cannot deal with a catastrophic HD failure?).  Not that I wanted to go back to Windows 8.1 again, but I am really surprised it was basically useless under circumstances it might really be needed.  I was just trying to use it as a stepping stone in the recovery process. So next, with a little searching, I found I could download a Windows 10 installer directly from Microsoft.  I did that and it installed Windows 10 without any trouble. Yesterday morning, I found that my Y510P would not boot the new drive.  It would d... So, you have a Windows 7 disk and when you place it in the disk drive it takes a while. It's relatively normal for disks.
Once it's installed the boot times will be much much much less.

What are you trying to do? You want to install it over the current Windows XP?

How much time does it take to get you to the screen where you choose the language? Can you proceed?

My system specifications, briefly:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

6GB RAM
256GB SSD
ATI 4670

Here are some things that happened in the last two weeks which may be of relevance, but I don't know:

UAC was turned off. Turning UAC on stops my gadgets from working.
About a week ago, I had Speech Recognition not working with some locale issue. Inserting this registry entry, ctfmon"="CTFMON.EXE, at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run, fixed the issue. However, I cannot find that registry entry anymore.
A few days ago, I attempted to apply some themes to my system using UXStyle and Universal Theme Patcher; I changed explorer.exe, shell32.dll, and a few other files. The themes failed, so I changed everything back (I think; is there any way to be sure?).
Four days ago, I had slow internet speed. I ran a "Full" Microsoft Security Essentials scan and it found many exploits (Explot: Java/CVE-2009-3867.BX, TrojanDownloader:Java/OpenConnection.AK, TrojranDownloader:Java/Rexec.c, and about a dozen others). I removed all of them. The internet speed returned to normal.
This morning, I updated the firmware on my SSD to enable TRIM. I restored an image of the drive I made with Windows Backup and Restore right before updating the drive.

I recently had to rebuild the Window 7 Home Premium X64 on my Gateway NV59 laptop. I used the recovery CDs from Gateway to do this.

So all I currently have is the OS and applications that were reinstalled from these CDs except the Norton Antivirus which I uninstalled since I use McAfee. I have not installed the McAfee yet.

I have installed approximately 160 updates successfully. Unfortunately the following 3 updates continue to fail:
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64 (KB2676562)
Security Update for Windows 7 for x64 (KB2724197)
Windows 7 Service Pack 1 fo X64 (KB976932)

I even tried to install each seperately but had no success. I have attached the error message that I see when the installaton fails.

Any ideas as to why these will not install?

I also tried using the "Windows Update". It's almost several months since I last got an update. And as far as I know, I set the option to "Notify me when new updates are available". I opened control center and windows update. But the windows update panel says: "Always install updates to enhance your computer's security and performance". I clicked the "Check For Updates" button. But another window says: "Windows update cannot currently check for updates, because service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I checked the services. The Security Center has been started. But "Windows Defender" & "Windows Update" was not on the list! I scanned for malicious programs with my own Antivirus. I found some threats. But definitely that's a low threat and it wouldn't make changes on my system (because I always check each file before opening). Please help!

Man_on_the_train found that almost all top names in antivirus softwares failed in his test save SpyShelter Firewall 10.0 which passed all his tests with a score of 99%. Incidentally, SpyShelter is not a full blown antivirus. Its more of a Firewall which doubles up as AV. Man_on_the_train found that only SpyShelter passed Matousec’s SSTS, CLT and his own keylogger software tests.

Got home today to find that IE would not open at all or very slowly, and my discovered errors in the system log regarding a failed paging operation on the hard drive. This is generally an indication that the hard drive is failing, so I began preparations for the funeral. Looking through the logs, I noticed that my computer had awoken itself at 3 AM and that's when the errors started. More investigation showed that it was Windows Update that woke the computer and KB980182 had been installed. Rolling back KB980182 resolved my problem, but not after I'd wasted a couple of hours troubleshooting.

I have been getting automatic updates from Microsoft since I installed Office Prof. 2007 that fail to install. The little Icon is always in the tray trying to install these two & they always fail & then keep repeating the process.
These are the two:

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

I've been attempting to work on fixing this problem myself, but so far have been unable to get rid of the issue(s) on my own. I came here following a link on a Google Group forum that talked about Google links redirecting to the wrong sites. The following is a break down of what is going on:

My wife and I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (presumably the 64-bit version). We have not had Internet access for it at home, and so have not been able to run updates for the anti-virus and OS straight out of the box. The laptop came with a 30-day trial of Norton preinstalled. It's been connected to the Internet once or twice, while my wife surfed the web at one of our family's houses.

A few weeks after that, we were able to get Internet access within our own home. The first time I noticed something was up was when I tried to run a search in Google and clicked on what appeared to be a legitimate link for a legitimate website in Internet Explorer. The link instead directed the browser to another search engine with link slightly related to my original search topic. At that point I knew something was up.

After doing some research on a different computer, I realized that we've managed to contract malware that I'm not able to get rid of on my own, as it appears to reset after rebooting. I've seen a few other posts with issues similar to mine, and so I believe someone here will be able to help me.

I have updated Norton to the mos... Read more

Hello , I have a old Notebook (Laptop) with 2Gb Ram, like in the description a Compaq V6000 model 6180ea It's pretty old, but I need him to use it . Some time ago, I've buyied a new Power Adapter because the last one was damaged and everything was working fine until now. It seems the battery doesn't work anymore, but I'm surprised because with no battery the laptop, boot up , shows the way to open the BIOS and after that he shut down. If I access the BIOS, he doesn't shut down, but he stay open until I save and exit from BIOS and after that shuts down again... Why so? All this because he doesn't have a battery anymore? On my other Notebook from Hp, I use it connected to the power directly. I connect the battery to the laptop when I'm away from home... and it's work fine.... What I can do to solve this problem with this old laptop too? I hope you can help me. Thank You!  Claudio_S

I think that it may be an application causing the problem. Go to Start / Run and type msconfig Go to the startup tab and start removing items one at a time and restart the computer. Do Not remove the anti-virus or firewall if there. This way you should find the culprit.

If Check Disk (chkdsk /r) fails, that would mean your new HDD has either failed, or is not plugged in.
Boot into Setup (Bios) is the HDD recognized here? Pull the HDD out and re-seat it until you see it in the Bios.

It finishes loading off bios and immediatley after it "Verifies Dmi Pool Data" and attempts to load Xp off the hard drive it hangs. We know it is a hard drive problem because we replaced the old hard drive with an identical new one and the machine ran fine. We have tried every thing and we are running out of ideas. We are able to boot to command prompt using XP rescue disk. We have 18 people and limitless resources trying to solve the problem and we still cant do it. If there is anyone out there who can offer help of any kind it would be greatly appreciated.

file: \boot\bcd
I tried Bootrec /RebuildBcd but it brings back an error that it can not create the new file as the file already exists
I'm not having much luck with the recovery disk for repair options as it can't seem to find the OS and brings back errors of can not recover
everything seems on a go slow and ubuntu can't find my c drive
even tried spin right and that can't recover a bad sector
I'm at a loss as to what to do befor the fresh install option
I'm on my last option to try use a back up store disk but I'm of the opinion that not even that will help
edit: I'm now sat at system recovery where no drives or OS ar showing

The surest way to fix it is a Complete reformat and re-install of windows.

That's what I did.

Can you enter Safe Mode? If so, at least you can save all of your files.

Hello,

I have a problem. Here is the situation. I started out with a two 500 gig raid striped hdd running windows 7. I recently acquired a 1tb wd black hdd and installed a fresh copy of win7 on that while the previous RAID setup was still active so I could easily copy files over to the 1tb as needed. The 1tb drive is also part of the RAID as a non-member disk.

The problem I am having is that without the original hdd's, windows will not boot on the 1tb hdd alone. It seems as though the boot information is all on the striped setup. When they are active, I have a choice to select the original os on the striped hdd, or the new one on the 1tb. I ran windows repair with the 1tb hdd alone and it said there was no system disk, but said it repaired, yet it still asks me to insert valid boot media in bios.

Anyone know how to make my 1tb drive bootable without the RAID drives present?

A:fail to boot

   Information
Boot up using the Startup Repair CD or Windows 7 DVD. (not the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disk) If you have a Netbook, you will need a CD/DVD drive.
NOTE: Make sure no USB drives are plugged in.

Do not use a USB Pendrive for Startup Repair.

With only the 1tb plug in,
1) Use the Rebuild BCD in this tutorial:
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

2) FIxMBR.

Do a Strartup Repair:

Note: You may need to do startup repair 3 to 4 times.

I think one of the reasons why they don't make a super effective AV that is offered for free is to prevent monopoly. Imagine if they create one that is free, AV companies out there will be in danger of falling.

Hi, Whenever i boot my computer, a screen will come up saying " Warning system boot fail!" and will list my 2 entries "primary master ide : None" and "master slave ide : None". Under this it lists my 3 devices in sata 1st being my primary hdd, 2nd being my cd rom and 3rd being my secondary hd.

Now all this has started since i installed a new graphics card onto my system, since then i have done a clean install of windows, updated graphics drivers and rummaged around bios to no avail. Please can someone help me.

Forgot to mention it gives the option to press F1 to go on regardless, but pc doesn't seem as stable as usual.

A:System Boot Fail

If you've done a clean install, then most of the options I would suggest here don't apply as that would have resolved most issues including most boot issues. Normally I would suggest a Startup Repair and then bootrec.exe to reset the boot configuration - back to the original if necessary - but both of those are essentially covered with a clean boot.

I suggest you check for updates to your BIOS (from your computer manufacturer) and install them. In fact, do so even if they are the same version as there may be some corruption or some other problem and a fresh copy may solve the problem. Then triple-check the settings to make sure that everything is configured properly because this sounds very much like a BIOS problem of some sort (even though you say it started with the new graphics card). Be sure to check any graphics-related BIOS settings (if any) as the new card may possibly require some changes.

If that doesn't work, do you still have the old graphics card and does it work (or a card from another computer you can borrow for testing)? Try replacing the current graphics card with the original or other (and change the drivers of course) and see if the problem goes away. If so, you may want to confirm that the new graphics card is compatible with your system (the version of Vista you are using, the motherboard into which it is inserted, any BIOS graphics settings, and everything else) and that it is not defective (though I don't understand how even then it would cause ... When i press the power button the power button light was well as the power indicator lights turns on for only about 5 to 10 secconds then it turns off.
The screen does not turn on, it just stays black.
eventually, after pressing the button for a couple of days it decides to turn on.
some times this problem lasts only a day but sometimes it last a couple of weeks.
i have tried all of the typical things: press the button down for X amount of time, or strip the pc first then press the button. none of these work reliably.
i just want to know what is happening and how i can prevent it from ever happening again?

ok, I'm at my wits end ya'll. I've searched for this problem through the many search pages of Google, and I still have yet to find a problem similar to mine.

I'm going to sell my old desktop to a friend, it has a ASUS P5N-D (SLi version, not Deluxe) w/ 8GB of OCZ RAM and a Wolfdale 2.8GHZ Dual Core CPU. Now, when it boots up, I see the BIOS splash screen, then goes to POST, then it comes up with that error. I've checked to make sure my HDDs (two 1TB WD SATA, not in any RAID configuration) are seen by the BIOS, in which they are (and my cheap ASUS DVD+R drive).

I've check my drives by connecting them to my new computer via SATA -> USB kit and all drives are formatted to NTFS with nothing on them. I can't really find a problem with the drives, and I still get that error when I try to load up Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

I'm out of ideas and was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

A:Disk boot fail

How old are these drives? It is possible that the one with the windows installation just bit the dust. Harddrives aren't the most reliable pieces of hardware and they get a lo of use. Check your bios to see if S.M.A.R.T. reporting is on. If it is disable it and reboot. If that doesn't work you could try popping in your windows 7 disk, booting from that and see if you can repair/restore. That's all I can think of.

Hello.
I had a issue with my CD/DVD drive, it didn't recognize CD inside and so on (I cleaned the laser lens (it didn't fix it perfectly, it still burps)), but finally I was able to burn a new cd XP SP3 on it (currently SP2), I also have other XP cd-s where I should be able to start booting and at friends place we burnt a new cd which I also tryed to burn at home and failed at checking phase.
So I Booted, Sometimes it reads the CD and can press any key to boot, sometimes it doesn't boot, as the CD drive is like in difficulties reading the CD.
If it boots, then the text appears: Inspecting your computer hardware configuration, then it eiher GOES BLACK or RESTARTS, depends of the CD. Once a bit after the blank screen it said INF file TXTSETUP.SIF is missing or corrupt.

Anyways, I also downloaded the Partguru, and made the USB-ZIP boot, and deleted the partitions, I thought that it will help, but now I'm in a situation, where I can't use computer, but can use the partguru program.

I've done:
Removed one RAM slot (At starting I had 512MB pqi RAM, now I have 2 slots of 1GB kingston)
Changed HDD from AUTO to LBA.
Removed all partitions in partguru, made only one primary partiton and formated it and made active.

AT THE MOMENT I'm using the bootfix CD that has 10 options from the thread which is pinned (because it also says NTLDR is missing), first three options didn't boot up a PC, I'm at 4th, going forward when PC can read the CD, cause it of... Read more
