Thinkpad t450 screen not lighting up

Q: Thinkpad t450 screen not lighting up

Sorry if this has been asked before, I looked around as best as I could with the search features, googling, etc. The thinkpad powers on just fine, boots into windows, there is no backlighting at all. Had to use a flashlight to navigate. The red dot on the back of the screen for the i on thinkpad does light up though. Is the screen bad, or is the cable loose? Should I try the motherboard side first or the display? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It is impossible to say. The screen could be bad. The motherboard could have a problem - most likely a fuse. The Hall sensor that switches when the lid hasclosed could have failed. sorry.

I've had my notebook, furnished by my employer, for a year and a half. A few weeks ago, the screen stopping coming on. Actually, it was on but very dim. If I pick it up and shake it a bit, the screen will light up. My IT dept won't try to fix this. They want me to send it off since it's under warranty. I'm assuming this is probably just a loose internal connection. I don't want to send it off which could take a week.  Any suggestions?

I just changed my ThinkPad T450 laptop screen to a full-HD IPS display. The new panel (display) shows up in the Device Manager with Hardware ID MONITOR\LGD03FF. While the screen works, I can no longer adjust the brightness in Windows 10 - it's always on full brightness and the brightness key combinations no longer work (nor do any of the Windows 10 software brightness controls). The brightness adjustment keys work perfectly in Linux (Ubuntu 16.04), and they work if I go in to the BIOS. The monitor is showing up in the Device Manager as "Generic PnP Monitor". Any idea how to get brightness working in Windows 10 with the LGD03FF panel?

A:Brightness not adjustable on ThinkPad T450 after changing screen (to LGD03FF)

unless you have a panel with an fru number corresponding to t450, the eeid (configuration chip on the panel) won't have the correct info to allow brightness control.

Is it possible to buy a part on the lenovo website and change my panel to an IPS one? I see there are many panels available for my variation of the T450. My variant is the PC-049SNG. I am unsure which use IPS technology. It is under warranty until the summer of 2018, though a panel swap should be easy? kind regards William

A:Thinkpad T450 IPS panel upgrade

Hi William,

Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you here.

As I understand that you have query regarding upgrading your T450 LCD panel to IPS
Yes it is possible according to Lenovo parts list. And here is one thread which suggests IPS panel upgrade
And here's the part number for IPS panel 04X5916, also you can order the parts on this website.
It will be better to contact Lenovo Support once for LCD panel replacement as system is under warranty.

I hope the above information helped you.

Hi,I have the Asus MB169C+ Portable Monitor which I use regularly with my MacBook. The power delivery also runs through the cable. I have the thinkpad t450 I want to connect to the monitor to. The laptop only has USB 3 ports. I tried a USB-C to USB-3 cable but whilst the monitor powered up, no picture appeared and windows told me the USB had malfunctioned. I then purchased a USB-C to DVI connector cable to connect the monitor to a powered USB hub I have for the laptop. But the monitor wouldn't switch on - I assume that the cable didn't push any power through. Does anybody know whether there is a solution to have the monitor work with the thinkpad? Thanks in advance.

I have an end user at our company that says whenever he puts his laptop in Hibernate mode, either by closing the lid or going to the Start/Windows logo and chooses Hibernate as a power option.  The machine is T450, Win7 64bit with BIOS version 1.22.  All the drivers are up to date according Device Manager and Lenovo's website and System Update application. I have done the options in Control Panel -> Power Options to ensure that Hibernation is never or disabled and that when you close he lid all settings are set to NOTHING.  Has any else experienced this issue?  I am going on page 3 of a Google Search and exhausting forums on Lenovo's site and Microsoft.  I have not found a solution mentioned in one those forums that has worked for me. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, This is my first Lenovo Thinkpad and I'm gonna tell that everything was going well till I found this issue. This is very dissapointing and furstrating, I can not believe that there's a bug on the BIOS that doesn't let me in.I read a lot of articles in the support page, with people with the same problem, so this isn't new.. there's this bug that wouldn't let me go in the BIOS and change settings. When booting my laptop, and when the message appears "Press enter to acces the BIOS", even if I press it a lot of times, F12, F9, F18, Fn combined or everything you can imagine, I CAN NOT GO THROUGH THE BIOS. This is  FUNDAMENTAL error that can not happen.. I mean is basic configuration of the laptop, it's unbelievable that we have this big issue...Anyway, and stopping with the yelling, I wanna say that I have tried everything that the support pages and other users have tried, but it didn't work for me:Press repeatedly Enter buttonUpadte BIOS to the latest version (v1.33)Press repeatedly Enter button (again)Try with F12Try with F9Try mixing the last two options..Disconnecting the laptop of all the perisfericalDisconnecting the laptop of the ACSmashing my hands into the keyborad Man, It's really frustrating that I can not  go through it, it's a really basic need when we talk about BIOS setting... Hope anyone can help me with this...  Thanks for reading! C.

The latest Intel HD 5500 graphics driver (20.19.15.4835) has an issue for me when upon closing the screen, either to put the computer to sleep or just to turn the screen off (when "do nothing" is set in windows' sleep options), the device connected sound will play and the resolution will change.Upon opening the screen the device disconnected sound will play and the screen will breifly show in its smaller resolution in the top left of the screen before returning to full size. Any windows which were not maximised will then be placed and shrunk to the top left portion of the screen. If the driver is uninstalled using device manager the issue goes away. The default Intel HD graphics drivers that Windows provides don't have this issue but I am unaware of the version number. Unfortunatly a couple days ago the current display drivers as provided from here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-t-series-laptops/thinkpad-... are now pushed through windows update. This now serves me the faulty driver giving me the issues rather than the working one.  If anyone is interested I have downloaded a tool which detects USB (dis)connects that might have been giving me the sound. This is not the issue as not devices are reported connecting or disconnecting via USB. The disconnect/connect sounds are only present with the current 20.19.15.4835 driver.

So, my friend has just received a laptop that isn't exactly functional at the moment. It only has Ubuntu on it, which is in guest mode, and there is no known password for elevated privileges (that we actually have). So I made her a bootable USB with Windows on it to install. The problem is that we can't seem to get into the BIOS, no matter how quick we are (tried everything). When taken to the GRUB bootloader, this is all we get:

Are there any commands I can use in Grub to get it to see the USB, or is there something I can accomplish in guest mode to change the delay so I can get into the BIOS? Or, is there a way I can help her get sudo access? I thought maybe it could have something to do with fast boot or something, but I have no idea. It's a little difficult because she's across the country, but I know more than she does when it comes to computers, so I'm trying to help.

The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad T450. Please feel free to ask me for any other necessary information. I wasn't sure if this would be enough, but didn't know what else to include.
Thank you in advance for your time! ^_^

I have an IBM ThinkPad T20 model 2647 laptop. not new but still working till now. Suddenly the LCD has gone dark on me. It is not the Fn F7 display selector and it is not the Fn Home brightness control. I can see the display.. barely.. it simply has no backlighting ... no illumination. I frankly don't have a clue how these things work so I don't know if there is a little light bulb or something else one has to replace or if this signals the end of a good life because the cost to repair is more than it is worth and suggests that it's time for that invitable upgrade to a newer model.

Please save me the long drive to the service center and share your abundant wisdom on this problem.
Thank you as always.

A:LCD Screen has no lighting

I think your post has the answer in it... "it simply has no backlighting". Problem could be the backlight itself, something known as the inverter board or possibly a power or wiring problem. These are not usually do it yourself repairs. Someone else can advise you as to how expensive a repair this is and if it is worth doing.

I recently bought my third Thinkpad, a T450 off ebay to replace my X230 for studying. It's an i7 model with 8GB RAM and a 256gb SSD. It still has nearly 2 years remaining on the extended warranty. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find it had a 1080p IPS screen already fitted (was planning to upgrade it) - did Lenovo ever ship the T450 with this? It's a late model one, did they introduce it later on in the machine's life cycle? There aren't any visible signs of the screen having been replaced and the seller never mentioned anything (I thought it was coming with the TN HD panel) and the brightness controls in Windows work as they should do on a clean Windows install.

Most online display retailers sellers suggest that the edp cable would have to be replaced for a dual channel one. Is this correct? Also, would replacing this display for a full HD blow any fuses in the laptop? Any help on this would be truely appreciated.

A:Screen upgrade from 1366x768 on T450

Welcome to the forum!

There is a FHD panel listed in the parts list on the support side: source: Parts List

Click on the link above and scroll down to page 4, you will see a FHD panel listed with FRU #04X5916. No need to change the cable, there are only two types of cables, one for touch and one for non touch (see on page 3 under "Cables")

Panels are not a self service CRU. If you have warranty on your T450 you may need to contact Lenovo to get the panel changed.

Hope this helps...

Hey, I bought a Thinkpad T450 back in November and really like the specs with one MAJOR exception and that's the screen that the laptop has come with. It's astoundingly bad. They didnt offer a 1080p IPS display so I went for a HP+ 1600x900 display as a sort of temprorary option, because I know that if I got a 1260x724 I'd have to invest in a new connector pin. The issue is when I went to ask an IT shop how much it would cost to just replace the screen they told me my Laptop wouldnt support a 1080p IPS screen and it would just be blank saying they've had this issue before. I've seen that people have done it on the internet so I don't really know who to go with here. I suspect they may have tried to go from 724 to 1080p which would explain it. Does anyone have any experience with this and if it is possible to upgrade is there a difference between a t450 and t450s 1080p screen  and would either be compatable with each other? As a note they offer my EXACT laptop with a 1080p screen now so again any info I may be missing here regarding why it wouldnt be compatable would be appreciated. Aren't these laptops supposed to be upgradable? It's the whole reason I bought it..

A:Upgrade T450 screen to 1080p

It looks like they only offer the FHD screen on the "S" model. Having said that, I cannot guarantee it will work, but I would GUESS that it would. They use the same BIOS. Note that if you have any warranty left, replacing the screen would likely void it. Note that the T450 series machines seem to have a custom eeid image and people who have replaced screens using aftermarket panels have reported that brightness controls no longer work.

Hello, The screen of my T450 flickers and becomes purple when it is flexed. The problem goes away when you apply pressure on the bezel under the display so the problem must be caused by a loose connection. I upgraded the original TN display of the T450 to an IPS screen so I presume that my warranty is void. My question is should I replace the screen again or is there a way to fix the connections in the soft black ribbon under the LCD panel? Is there a tutorial how this could be done? Thank you for your suggestions!

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,
