Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

Q: Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

Hi there all,

I have been experiencing a problem on my laptop PC. I am attempting to browse and then upload files to my server for a web site but when I browse it seems a certain folder on images it freezes the application. I have tried everything including a "sfc /scannnow"; doing a Disk Scan and scanning a removing spyware.

Could this be software related or maybe a memory leak perhaps. Any solutions or idea would be appreciated.

thanks all.

Preferred Solution: Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Explorer.exe Freezes When I Browse File System

Hello rshillman

Explorer could be having a problem generating the previews (thumbnails) of the images. An image might be corrupted, or it might just be explorer`s fault.

Try turning off thumbnails. This means you will have no previews in any of your folders, but try it and see if it fixes the problem. you can always reverse this later if you want to by rechecking the box.

The thumbs.db file is generated by the Windows operating system. It is a database file containing the small images displayed when you view a folder in "thumbnail" view (as opposed to tile, icon, list, or detail view). No harm is done by deleting thumbs.db files.

To disable storing the miniatures in a "thumbs.db" file for each folder.....

Click the Start button
Select Control Panel
Select Folder Options
Click the View tab
Check "Do not cache thumbnails"
Click the OK button

Then search on all your harddrives including subdirectories for "thumbs.db" you will receive a complete list of them. Highlight all the "thumbs.db" files and delete them.

So I am running Windows Vista 64-Bit, and just recently, whenever I try and browse for a picture to attach to a email or upload to a blog, the browse window freezes, and I have to close internet explorer.

I tried uploading other files, such as music, and that works fine. However, as soon as I click browse, then pictures, and I scroll my cursor over to click on a folder, it freezes. Any advice?

Dear All:

I have been experiencing an annoying issue in Windows (Windows Ultimate 64 bits, Home premium 64 bits and Windows 8 Pro 64 bits) min

After working well for a few minutes, the windows explorer freezes upon launch, only displaying the "favorites", "libraries" and "homegroup" icons in the left pane. The elements in the mentioned icons cannot be accessed and sometimes they have a magnifying glass on them and the icons on the desktop are blank.

Also, Control Panel windows is often empty after this error takes place.

This issue often, but not necessarily, comes about when i try to check the properties of a file, with windows explorer freezing immediately.

I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice to no avail.

Anyone has ideas on how to fix this? It's rendering my two laptops unusable.
Highly appreciate any useful advice.

Thank you,

Hi there, this is my first post as I'm pretty new. I really hope you guys can help me sort this out, as I've searched everywhere for a solution and I'm really starting to panic, as I have no clue about this sort of thing.Ok so a couple of days ago I was just browsing the internet, on msn etc. as you do when this fake virus scan popped up, along with a cmd window. I noticed system32 in the cmd window and a message popped up saying something along the lines of 'do you want to enable antivirus software?'. I tried clicking no because I thought it was fake, the blue screen popped up and my laptop proceeded to turn itself off.I got worried when I turned it back on, and the same thing popped up as soon as I logged on: Fake scan -> Blue screen -> restart. So I managed to boot it up in safe mode. Now my subscription to Windows Live OneCare had run out, but usually it quarantines threats for me as and when I get them. For whatever reason, it would not let me run this in safe mode. NB - at this point I still had a task bar, could still browse files and programs from the start menu and using explorer. So, I thought to myself I would try and System Restore, as this usually resolves problems. I tried running System Restore but kept getting error messages saying that it had been disabled by group policy. I then proceeded to search the internet for a solution. As my version of Vista is home edition, it did not have a group policy editor, so I had to use the Registry... Read more

File Explorer and Free Commander both freeze regularly. Task Manager says "not responding". Either will freeze after a single icon has been clicked. That is a second click on a different icon will freeze TM. This seems to occur most often when a .exe file is clicked. I've several downloads that I am trying to install to see if I like them but am having a real problem with TM. The file remains frozen until closed in TM. But if I reopen TM and click on that file it freezes. I thought TrendMicro might be the problem but I uninstalled it and the problem remains.

I have been having a problem with Windows XP 64 Bit freezing when a file name in Explorer is double clicked. It happens with any file from any program. And it happens with files on a network as well as files on the PC's hard Drive. Actually "freezing" is not a good description. Operating in super duper slow motion then failing outright is a more accurate way to put it.

For example: I will open a folder on our network and browse to an Excel file I want to load. I double click on the name. Normally the file comes right up. However, more often than not nothing happens. After a couple minutes of waiting I have used Task Manager to discover that the "Not Responding" description is right next to Explorer's name in the "Applications" tab of Task Manager. Eventually the process will either bomb out completely and I'll get the "Send Email to Microsoft" dialog box. Or the parent application will load (in this case Excel) but without the file I selected being loaded.

And it's not just windows in Explorer. If I have an Outlook email with a Image attached, double clicking on the image name SHOULD take me right to the program associated with that file extension. However, it does the SAME thing as mentioned above.

I am running XP Professional 64 Bit with the latest updates as Service packs installed. The computer I'm using is a Dell Precision DWS490 that has an Intel Xeon CPU 3.20GHz along with 2 GB of Ram. Windows Update is set... Read more

Hi, a day or two ago I've had a problem where if I right click on a file or folder (any type) the wheel will turn up but won't load. Usually it will cause the explorer to crash. I am still able to view the video or music file at this time but right clicking will not work. At first i thought this was caused by iTunes as that won't open up either. However, upon restarting it will work just fine. I am able to right click and also open iTunes. I have figured out this may be caused after I wake my computer up from sleeping or hibernating. I have tested this out multiple times and it happens all the time. When i try to log out or shut down (or simply restart also) the wheel keeps spinning while saying Shutting down. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it but I just wanted to include it as this is started to happen at the same time. I'm not really certain whats causing this after waking my computer up. I hope I explained this clearly but if I haven't please let me know. I'm on a 64 bit, Windows 7 computer.

This problem started "out of the blue" a couple of months ago. I had a tech look at it, and the only solution he came up with was to create a new user account, which worked. The problem has just come back. I can't find anything online to resolve it, so hopefully somebody here can help.

When trying to save a document (could be from OpenOffice or LibreOffice or even a PDF), the Save As dialog opens and then immediately freezes. There is no way to escape--I have to "X" out of it and the document app crashes.

No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.

This is a business computer, so obviously we need to get this resolved ASAP. Please help!

I thought LibreOffice was a Ubuntu-only program?

There is a known issue with this happening in LibreOffice on Ubuntu- Try upgrading to the latest version.

Also, get the absolute latest version of Acrobat or Acrobat Reader you can find

I found this, which is related:

Save/Print as PDF crashes Word - Microsoft Community

Make the error show up again, force the program out, and show us the Event Logs from exactly when it happened, maybe there is something in there that can tell us why it is happening.

I know OpenOffice has a Windows version, is that the same as LibreOffice? You might be better off just buying a stand alone version of Microsoft Word, if you can- That way you can save to PDF's and there won't be any problems. Both Office 2010 and 2013 have good Save to PDF functions.

When I right click on a file in Windows Explorer (Vista Ultimate) the hour glass appears and after a while the Explorer window turns grayish. If I minimize it I can continue to work, even activate another Windows Explorer window. But if I attempt to close the grayed window the screen turns blue (Not the "window of death", and there are no error messages) and my desk top is lost. I can three finger salute, raising the task manager which tells me nothing is running, and I have to restart or shut down!

I have a Toshiba Satellite A205, running VIsta Ultimate, 4 GB ram, etc., etc.

I tried to do a search on this Forum but had trouble and could do nothing, so I write this note.

Thanks for any help.

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

My system (Windows XP Media Center Edition) has begun freezing up when I try to open up Windows Explorer. I can open other programs fine, like web browsers or applications. But when I try to open up Windows Explorer, nothing happens, my CPU usage skyrockets to 100%, and eventually I can't nothing on the computer responds. The only thing I am capable of doing at that point is opening up Task Manager to restart my system.

Sometimes, I get an error message saying that the Dr. Watson PostMortem program has encountered an error (which pops up after an unsuccessful try at opening Windows Explorer).

I'm not really sure what I should try to do at this point, short of reinstalling (which would be a totally last resort). I've already run things like ad-aware, spybot, and did a virus scan, and the problem is still there.

Any ideas? Thanks so much in advance.

Oh and, I dragged it into Kaspersky and it froze.

Please help.

A:Can't delete corrupted file on desktop -- Freezes explorer.exe

Hi Zorai

Did you try deleting it from Safe Mode? If you haven't tried that yet, give it a go.

If that doesn't work, perhaps the easiest way to delete it would be to boot your PC with a Linux Live CD (or DVD) and delete the file using it's file explorer. Easy to use versions are readily available (and free - since they are "open source") ... some of the more popular versions are from Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Knoppix, SUSE, Scientific Linux ... etc. Your favorite search engine will yield many results.

The desktop will be listed under the Users folder --> Users\username\Desktop -- since the file is on the Desktop, you should be able to delete it permanently from there.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. ... might have Kapersky run a full scan, too.

Got a brand new HP 15-F272 (I gather that's the model name). Decent laptop, but the integral disc drive won't play CDs or DVDs. When I put a CD in, it will start playing the first song, but after 26 seconds it stops, and then the drive shuts down after a few minutes of sitting there whirring, and it won't do anything after that; the window goes faded gray and it says "Not Responding". I tried two different media players, and both do the same thing. I tried a DVD instead and it will play the opening titles and the menu, but when you start playing the film itself, every few minutes it stops and jumps ahead like it's fast-forwarding. The sound cuts out and you see random frames from every 15 seconds until it stop again a minute or two ahead of where you were watching.
And then in either case when you go to File Explorer to open something else afterward you find the window faded and saying "Not Responding", which won't stop until you restart the laptop (at least I never tried waiting more than ten minutes to see if it cleared up). Is this a software or a hardware problem? I tried to get ahold of HP tech support but they don't seem to make it very easy to actually do that.

Some time yesterday my PC began acting strangely. Every time I open Explorer, I see "Working on it..." and have to wait several seconds before I can do anything. In addition, any changes to the file structure (deleting files, copying, moving, etc.) cause another freeze. This occurs on all drives, SSD or HDD.

There are no error messages in Event Viewer, no problems reported by SFC /SCANNOW, and no file system errors reported by CHKDSK. Any advice?

A:Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Addendum: If I launch Explorer from "This PC" I see the "Working on it" text. If I launch via the task bar shortcut, it freezes quietly, and loads Explorer after 10-15 seconds. Accessing files through the command prompt has no delay, which leads me to believe this is an issue with Explorer. I tried rebuilding the search index, but that had no effect.

I can no longer convert ANY video file type (AVI, MPG) and burn a DVD from it. When I try, one of three things typically happens;
1) The program gives an error message like 'Instruction at "0x004647..." referenced memory at "0x0766.....". The memory could not be "read"'. Microsoft recommends updating to the latest service pack. I'm running Win2000 service pk.4, all updated.
2) Strangely programs not only stop, but also stop running AND close by themselves. I've run antivirus and anti-spyware programs... no fix.
3) Most often the computer just freezes badly; often the motherboard reset button doesn't even do the job and I have to power off completely.

These problems happen with a number of software packages including Cucusoft AVI Converter Pro, 1st Video Converter, NeroVision Express, AVI to DVD Converter (actual name) and others.

I even reinstalled Windows 2000.... still no fix.

I recently installed a new motherboard, CPU and memory and I suspect one or more to the culprit. I've tested the memory, it's ok. The system also passes all tests using cpu utilities (CPU Burn-IN & CPU Stability Test)

I'm freakin' out here!! Does anyone have any experience with this? A verified solution would be greatly appreciated.

I am running Windows XP professional on my PC. Shutting down all applications including antivirus programs does not help. The event viewer does not log in any errors! No idea what's causing this problem.

Hi There,

I have been having a few problems with my IBM T42 Laptop for a while now. I was originally running Windows XP on this system and about 12 months ago I installed Ubuntu 9 on it to mess around a bit with the OS and have a basic, non-Microsoft laptop in the house that I could use for browing the web and IM, etc... The laptop needed a clean install anway as Windows XP was running like a dog. Originally it was dual boot but once I got happy with Ubuntu I did a clean install and everything worked reasonably well. I had a few issues with the wireless LAN adapter and compatibilty, but sorted it out following a few forums (firware updates, driver updates) and everything was great. I upgraded to the Ubuntu 10.04 OS and then started having some issues. Essentially my browser would freeze randomly. Again, I visted the forums and had no joy in sorting out the problem. I reverted the OS back to Ubuntu 9 and the problem persisted. So I gave up on it totally around 6 months ago.

Last week I fired up the laptop again and decided I would use the IBM restore utility and the disks I created a couple of years ago to put on a clean install of Windows XP and see how things went. So far I have done all the Windows XP updates (SP3, etc...), I have been to the Lenovo website and updated all drivers, firmware, BIOS, etc... every little problem I have had has been sorted with a software or firmware update which I have successfully implemented. All niggles have been sorted bar one.

I've fresh installed Windows 7 4 times and updated all drivers to current as far as I know. I have also done the memory test by the iso cd provided multiple times for the 5 cycles that is posted. I've done disk scans virus scans etc all come back with no problems or errors. These of course are according to my observations.

running Win Xp Sp3
hardware has been running fine for over 6months, no recent hardware/software upgrades to explain this.

problem started when my system wouldn't boot up when ANY USB devices were connected (and won't recognize any if it's powered on)...progressed to system wouldn't boot-up at all....progressed to system would boot-up but freeze after about 20 seconds of up-time.

I can log into my administrator account, and at this point all I want to do is recover the data in my account. It's not shared so I need access to it while I'm logged into the account. (Mounted the drive externally, no problems with the drive, just the file permissions...ran AV/spyware scan on drive and the files it could read were clean)

I'm thinking my MOBO is dying on me as at this point I've tried to install Xp off of 3 different disks (and different versions) on two different drives and I keep on getting the lovely blue screen (If i get that far; usually freezes-up) MOBO settings have not been modified (always have been on default, but I did change the battery just in-case)

My question is this... is there a command that I'd be able to quickly use (while logged into the account) to change the file permissions so I can access the files when I mount the drive externally? and If so, do I risk corrupting the files when the system freezes again? (and the system hasn't been able to apply the changes to all of the files)

or is there a different workaround I could try?

A:system freezes-up 20seconds after boot-up, need file access privelages

Just for info - it could be the ram causing the problem. if you don't have any spare ram, then just try it with one stick at a time.

But it sounds like your well past that and just want the data!

For a month now when I watch a couple random youtube videos the video will not load and as soon as that happens I lose the internet but I still have the "blue dot connected" symbol but no web page will load and my outlook email won't send or receive. The only way to solve it is to restart the computer.

Sometimes I can watch a bunch of videos with no problem and then the next video will freeze.

I have Windows vista, time warner internet, I use firefox. I've been trying to diagnose the problem myself but I can't find the solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe your network adapter?

Do you have the latest driver for it?

Hi all.
I write from Italy.
I am having problems browsing with Firefox from my laptop: some pages do not open (expecially interactive pages, such as homebanking or skype) showing the message: secure connection failed - ssl_error_bad_mac_read, or they open without the full display (only showing a list of scripts on the left side).

Please note:
- my laptop is an Asus Notebook K52jc series, Intel Core I3 CPU M350 2.27GHz, 64bit, Windows 7 Home Premium
- I use an optical fiber connection from home (Fastweb).
- I do not have any problem browsing with my other pc through the same connection (either with firefox or explorer)
- I don't have problems browsing with this laptop from my office connection or through wi-fi (so the problem seems to be matching firefox in my laptop to the home optical fiber connection)
- I can't use explorer either on this laptop (I am posting a thread on this issue in the other forum section)
- I tried to remove/reinstall both firefox and explorer without use so far.
- I tried to call the provider assistance (Fastweb) but they can't help.

Any help welcome.

A:can't browse with explorer (IE9)

Hi All,
I have this issue: I can't browse with explorer from my laptop. Several pages do not open or malfunction: as an example the techsupportforum home page opens but disappears immediately, and I.E. shows the message "can't connect to the server". Again my homebanking page appears corrupted, only showing scripts on the left side of the screen.
Please note:
- I tried to remove/reinstall the browser without results.
- I have similar problems while using Firefox (although it runs slightly better: I am using it now, but I can't open sites such as homebanking, with the message: ssl_error_bad_mac_read)
- my system is: Asus Notebook K52jc series, Intel Core I3 CPU M350 2.27GHz, 64bit, Windows 7 Home Premium
- I use an optical fiber connection from home (Fastweb), to which a pc is also connected without any problem
- When I use my laptop at the office (wi-fi connection) Firefox works properly but not Explorer

Any help appreciated.

Odd one. Had a virus on a customer's computer. Found it, cleaned it, no problem. Now when I go to My Computer and double click a drive nothing happens. I can't right click or left click, but if I highlight the drive and then go: File, Open.... it opens to display the folders on the drive. And to open a folder, I must do the same thing. Same goes for the Control Panel. I must highlight an icon (Display, System, Users, etc.) and then go File..Open to get the app open. If I boot up in Safe Mode, everything works fine. It's like I can't browse locally. If I double click an icon on the Desktop everything works fine. Damn thing is driving me crazy. Also ran a repair with the Windows 2000 disk. No help.

My laptop comes up with this message everytime it is turned off, but if i leave it to 'check' then it goes in a continous loop, so I cancel it first time. Does anyone how I can stop this from happening and also if it is the cause of the problem with Internet explorer 9, which installs but then when restarted doesn't acknowledge it has been installed ?

Thanks, Mark

A:'checking file system on c;' Internet explorer 9 problem to

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Launch Windows Explorer then right-click your C drive and click Properties.

Click the Tools tab and under Error Checking click the Check Now button.

Check Automatically Fix File System Errors then click Start.

Attachment 213193

It'll take some time depending how big your hard drive is, but all being well you won't be bothered at startup again.

I doubt very much whether IE9 has anything to do with the problem.

I have a Windows XP client networked on an NT 4.0 server in a domain. All other network connections work properly, but Internet Explorer 6.0 cannot browse external web sites (cannot open page). The NT server uses WINS, as well as TCP/IP.

I believe this is a name resolution problem. I understand that creating a lmhosts and a hosts file on the XP client system can help resolve name resolution.

If so,

1. how should the file be written,

2. in which folder should it be placed on the XP client, and

3. is there anything else I should do to help name resolution?

so that the XP client can pull up web pages?

A:XP Internet Explorer cannot browse web on NT 4.0 server

Go on the XP network settings and define a DNS server that your ISP uses. This is not a local name resolution problem, it is an internet site resolution problem. Go to a command prompt and type in ipconfig /all and post back if there are any DNS servers listed there.

Hi there,

I am new to windows 7 and have it with my desktop for work. I am wondering about the browse button in windows explorer because I work with programs that run a lot of scripts that import template files into a program. The scripts use paths to import these files, and they will work as long as I do not hit the browse button to open windows file browser. With windows XP the browse button would open the appropriate directory where the specified file was located, but with 7 it overrides the script and always opens to whatever folder I was last in when using the file browser. I am not sure I am making sense, but is there a way to change this so it works like it did in XP? I am not really looking to create favorites because there are too many folders I browse into in the course of a day...

A:Windows Explorer Browse button

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

I see this same problem with the scripts that I use. It is really annoying.

Maybe someone will know the answer for both of us.

This has been going on ever since I started using this provider, about a month and a half. Have been able to do system restore on the one computer but on the other (Windows 7) had to use the impression on the disk. It worked right for about 24 hours, till I ran into a webpage I'm accustomed to being able to use that said I needed Flash Player. After following the link and installing it there was no difference in what Manage Add Ons said, i.e there was a working copy of Flash Object or something but no Flash Player.
Immediately after installing the Flash Player it all started in again. HEAVY r.a.m. use, like 800,000 units for one iteration if iexplore. 20 iterations of internet explorer with apparently default setting to restore the page as soon as you close it. (And now it's starting to happen on the XP computer.) Even with Service Pack 1, the Microsoft install for Explorer 9 and 11 refuses to work. When I located ie 9 on a download site it caused the RAM problem in spades and had to do a clean boot, that is restore the system from the hard drive.
In the fifteen years I've been using computers have dealt successfully with a lot of problems, but never like this. I've been at it so long now so many days and so many hours a day that am afraid I can't even remember what happened and certainly don't know what to do next. I guess I need help with three things:

I am having problems browsing the web on AOL, Internet explorer works fine, I can send and receive e-mails on AOL, I can access facebook on AOL, but when I search anything in the browser bar the message comes up with a blank page and message says "NAVIGATION TO THE WEB PAGE WAS CANCELLED" I have 2 laptops using AOL off of the same router all work fine.
I have contacted AOL (lots of suggestion but nothing works) I have tried a system reset to a previous date, I have run a couple of complete scans with Norton, I have de-installed AOL and re-installed AOL. I have run the AOL quick fix no luck. I have had no problems like this before been with AOL for 10 years.

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

When I try to do a search in Windows Explorer, and I hit the drop-down in the "Look In" field, I don't have an option to browse to different folders, it's just not there. I've checked thru every option available to see if it's just not turned on, but no luck. All of my co-workers have it, and I've been scouring the Internet and my registry looking for an answer. What model of Dell is this?
Windows Vista is obsolete and support is dropping for IE8 and even IE9 which is the last IE for Vista. While it is possible for you to use the WSUS Offline Update to patch Windows Vista (to get to SP2, IE9 etc this is extremely time consuming and Windows vista will still be obsolete....
My advise is tho use the Windows 10 Insider 10130 as a stepping stone to get the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro. Please state your model and take a screenshot of your system so I know what processor and RAM you have. Also provide the hardware IDs so I can know other system variants:

I've been trying to get my HP Pavilion dv4000 to recognize my wireless internet in my home for the past two days. It has finally done so and says it is connected to the wireless network. However, when i bring up the internet explorer it says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". I've tried to fix it myself by entering some prompts into the command prompt program, but even things such as "ipconfig /all" won't work. It keeps telling me:

"An internal error has occurred: the request is not supported.
Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.
Additional information: Unable to query host name."

I have tried changing the firewall settings as well, but it says it can't access that either. Also, I have tried the diagnostics program through Internet Explorer and it told me that there seemed to be something wrong with the Winsock program. It supposedly restored everything in that program to its default settings, then restarted my computer, but that didn't work either. The wireless icon in my tray says I'm connected and so does the connection when I bring up my available networks. I'm extremely frustrated and need some serious help! Please help and thank you for any suggestions.
