Preferred Solution: bitlocker corrupted my external drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I damaged my drive, while I use decrypting my BitLocker encrypted External Hard Disk, due to numerous disconnection because of loose USB port. The Decryption was almost half way done. Now the drive is not shown in My Computer but it is detectable through other O/S like MAC, Linux as Unknown partition.
The data is extremely important, so I dont want to resolve in formatting the drive. Is there a way, I could fix my drive.

A:Bitlocker Corrupted Drive

If you you were decrypting the drive and it failed...then no the data is lost. You might try and use those recovery tools to try and rescues it. However, encryption is not a play thing to be abused. When things go wrong, they go wrong.

I am running Windows 10 Pro on a HP Proliant ML110 G7 machine, and decided to install bitlocker using a password and USB key. The machine does NOT have a TPM installed.

I first activated it on 2 logical volumes. Then I tried to activate it on my OS boot drive (C, and after the step where I created my password and USB rescue key it said it would reboot to test the keys and then commence with the encryption. It rebooted and then, with the USB key inserted, read the key correctly and proceeded to give me a blue screen saying that my PC was unbootable with the error message "Unmountable_Boot_Volume", and suggested I repair the startup process with a windows installation disc or USB.

I did, but when I boot the PC using a Windows 10 install USB and try to run startup repair it asks me for the password or the USB key or the Number key, and I try them all but say they're wrong, and I know they're correct because when I try to boot directly to the hard drive they are accepted.

Is there anything else I can try? Help.

Hello all,

I didn't use my external hard drive for over a month, and today I decided that i wanted a back-up of some of the stuff on my laptop. I plugged it in and immediately a message popped up, saying that this drive was protected by something called BitLocker. It required me to enter a 48 digit recovery key. I had NEVER heard of BitLocker up until that point. I didn't know anything about a recovery key, and why didn't it ask for a regular password first, before asking for a recovery key? I didn't have a clue. I still don't have a clue. I searched my computer for BitLocker using the regular 8.1 system search. No results. I searched in PC Info. There is something about encryption there. That was, and is turned off. Not a mention of BitLocker anywhere. When i looked it up it said it comes with Windows 8.1 Pro or Enterprise edition. I am fairly certain I have regular 8.1. How in the name of all that is holy did I get saddled with this piece of shit encryption that locks me from my files, while I don't even want it? When I plugged it into my fathers laptop, also running 8.1 it gave the same message. When i plugged it into my brothers Asus tablet with keyboard combo, also running 8.1, it didn't give any problems. Does anyone here have any clue what is going on? Would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Thank you

A:BitLocker and External Hard Drive(WD My passport 2TB)

I'm having the exact same problem. I've been dealing with it for months. Both of my external hard drives had this happen to them at roughly the same time, and I have no idea how. I too had never heard of Bitlocker before this happened. I tried calling WD and they told me to call Microsoft as Bitlocker is owned by Microsoft. I called Microsoft and they told me to talk to WD. I've been led in circles for months and still cannot access my hard drives and the files on them. I do not have the recovery keys and do not know how to get them. I have been searching for answers throughout the internet without any results. I was told that I could reformat them, and that might work, but then I would lose all of my files. I don't have a backup for them because my hard drives were the backups (that's why I had two!). If you have been able to fix this problem, or have any sort of solutions or options, please, please help me out.

Hey guys,

So I was trying to decrypt a Bitlocker-protected portable drive overnight and it seems to be stuck at 0.4% decryption completed (some other drives were encrypted around the same time but I don't think that should affect it much, right?) I guess either my USB 3.0 hub momentarily failed or my computer went to sleep during the process?
Anyway, I then paused decryption and opened up the error checking tool but it didn't complete (I don't think it even opened) but in the process, I agreed to turn off access to the drive during the "error check" that doesn't seem to have happened.

So recap: Not only can I not see the files on the drive, Windows can't even access the drive?

Btw, there's over 2TB worth of some pretty important data on this drive so can someone please help? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for a software solution.

A:Bitlocker external drive seems to have stuck decrypting

Update: the drive seems to work after plugging it into my laptop's built-in USB port. It shows the decrypting screen and everything and after copying all the contents to a larger 4TB drive, they seem to be intact as far as I can tell.

Dear Friends,

A:External hard drive has to be opened from bitlocker

Hello Jenieragav, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm afraid that if you have do not have the password or recovery key, then about the only option is to format the drive to be able to use it again. That's what BitLocker is designed for. No access with password or key.

This is a recent problem. I have a Toshiba Canvio external drive, not SSD. It's got Bitlocker, so when I turn my PC on or awake from sleep, I have to enter a password to access the drive. Now, if I restart my PC, it works fine. Recently though, when I awaken from sleep, I'll click on the drive to enter the password, and Windows does this eternal loading thing. The address bar in Explorer has that green progress bar moving along, but it never finishes. If I unplug the drive and plug it back in, I can enter the password and access the drive, but after a while it'll start doing to eternal loading thing again. I doesn't seem like it would be the drive; the drive doesn't know whether the PC is freshly restarted or coming back from sleep.

A:External Bitlocker drive not working properly after sleep.

I think it may be an explorer problem. I had the problem with the drive again today after awaking my PC, and tried restarting the explorer process. The explorer UI (windows, task bar, start menu, etc.) is gone, but it won't restart and won't go away when I click "end task"

Is there any way to restore the external drive to the ?pre-format? state so that I can recover/access the data?

The drive is in a good health, ? always removed safely by ejecting from notification area and chkdsk has no errors, ? unfortunately data wasn?t backed up as I was in process of migrating to new PC and accidentally deleted the master back-up .

Hi folks, Need some help here.  I reformatted (complete reformat with no personal preferences saved) of Windows 10 because of several glitches that were annoying.  I was smart to backup all my documents to an external hard drive that was encrypted with BitLocker.  But once the reformat was complete, the drive is no longer detected.  I can see the drive in Disk Management but it won't pop up in explorer and BitLocker does not prompt me when I plug in.  Help!  My two drives have all my backups and backups of backups!!! I've tried to update all the software/firmware/drivers but to no avail. I'm still under warranty but this is a software issue only I'm certain of it.   Help!

Hello everyone! I am so desperate at this point, having tried whatever I could with the little knowledge I have about computers. For starters, I accidentally plugged out my 2tb external drive while the computer was scanning it. After that I was told that my drive was corrupted. So I ran chkdsk on my drive and I was able to get some items back, but not all, I have missing folders. Also, trying to open a folder makes my computer freeze up, but I'm sure its not a virus. All of this started when I got the corrupted message. Trying to fix this problem, I set my external drive as active, thinking this would fix the problem. When I saw that it didn't fix the problem, I was unable to mark it as inactive. I went through all the prompts in the chkdsk black screen only to get stuck at the last prompt. Now I'm having an even bigger problem because my computer is doing this continuous boot. When it boots up, it attempts to go to the blue chkdsk screen for like 1 second and then it boots as normal. When it asks me what mode to boot up in, no matter what mode I select (safe, normal) it reboots all over again. I have also tried to do a repair using my Windows disc, but when asked to select my c drive, I see no letter next to the drive, so I can't select it. I am at my witts end with this issue, trying to handle it myself with no avail. I really need your help, anybody! I enabled bitlocker by editing the group policy. At tha time, I encrypted my internal and external hard drive. The internal drive saved the key to my usb drive and by default, the external drive save it in my Documents folder. I also selected the auto-unlock option to prevent myself from having to key my password each time I used the drive. Due to performance issues after upgrading from Vista, I decided to reinstall Windows 7. I copied all of my data over to the external drive from the Documents folder, right clicked th external drive from the Computer folder and assumed by removing the password, which is allowed since the auto-unlock setting was enabled (not the best idea for those who might be considering this) and thought that Bitlocker was disabled from the external drive and was not aware that it had to be turned off from the Control Panel System and Security area. I proceeded to install Ubuntu which repartitioned the hard drive.I was curious to see if the new beta release fixed a kernel panic issue I was experiencing and it did not. I now went back to Windows 7 and started the installation. This repartitioned the drive again and everything was reinstalled. I go to plug in my external drive and now I'm prompted for the 48 digit recovery key. Ok, I pull out my jump drive to find that I don't have it. Since it was in my Documents folder and I copied all of that data to the external drive prior to the reinstall, its now encrypted on the drive and I've basically lost all of ... Read more

No, without the cert you cannot gain access to the drive, by design, and as expected behavior. If you could, there would not be a reason for the encryption to exist at all.Rating posts helps other users

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I have an external hard drive (seagate 1TB) that recently has been corrupted. As far as I can tell all the files are still there just most are unreadable (e.g if I open an audio file the first 10s play then it skips to the next track as if its finished).
Occasionally on opening a file/folder I get an error saying an I/O error has occured.
Sometimes I cannot access the drive at all, and explorer just hangs when I try and open it.

I have tried running chkdsk but it says the file system is type RAW, and stops.

The hard drive is all one partition, formatted as NTFS, and has ~508GB used (this has not changed since the problems started occuring. Unfortunatly I only have about 200GB free on other hard drives, and although I do have a backup I cant get to it for 2 months!! I am running windows 7.

Is there any chance of gettin the data back or is reformatting and waiting til I can get the backup a better idea? I'd really rather not be without this data for 2 months!! Thanks for any help!!

Once my PC has booted up I normally plug-in (insert) my External Hard-Drive into one of the two USB ports on the front of my PC.
To-day I inserted my Ext-HD plus a USB Stick into the two front ports with a view to copying some files to the USB stick from the Ext-HD.
After the copying was completed I removed the USB stick from the port.
However, when I looked in the folders within the Ext-HD everything had changed.
The folders had changed to 'Icon' format from my preferred 'Thumbnail' format.
Most of these folders are different subjects on photography and every folder when looking at them have 4 little photos. This is the way I like it and so I changed things back to 'Thumbnails'.
But a few of these folders have audio and video music files in them and so just look like regular folders.
So when I try to move these particular folders (the regular ones) to the bottom below the photo folders (just for neatness) they seem to 'stick' at the bottom and won't slot into place as they should and the page won't scroll down to accommodate the folders being moved down.
The device as far as I can make out is 'working properly but clearly it isn't.
Anyone any ideas ?

My buddy has a P4 3.0Ghz w/ 1GB RAM running WinXP. He has an HP 5100 printer/scanner combo. He recently bought a Maxtor 500GB external HD to back up his files. When he 1st connected it, everything seemed to go fine and he successfully made a backup. But when he tried to print something, it wouldn't recognize the printer.

So I tried to fix it... we tried uninstalling and reinstalling the printer and HD software, but that didn't make any difference. When both devices are connected to the USB ports, the system would hang on the "press DEL to enter Setup" screen. That tells me it's not a software problem -- it never even gets to the pt where it starts loading the software. If u leave either the HD or the printer connected, Windows start up and then it says that the device has malfunctioned. I looked in the Device Manager and it lists them as "unknown USB device". However, I should also pt out that he has a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse plugged into the USB port and those worked fine the whole time.

So I decided to delete all the USB entries in the Device Manager. He managed to dig out an old PS/2 mouse so that we could still click on stuff even without the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I rebooted w/ the printer connected and at 1 pt the printer was working fine. Then we tried to connect the HD w/ the printer already connected and it all went to hell again.

By the time I left, neither device would work, even if we deleted all the USB entries fr... Read more

At first, I don't need to recover my data, I just want my drive back to re-use it.
How can a format my usb drive including all boot sectors which sees to be locked/write-protected by bitlocker?

My problem starts with decrypting my drive by deactivting bitlocker on it by entering the valid password/recovery key. At 36% of decryption the process halts without reason. Now, I'm unable to access my drive or resume the process.

I tried...
    ...to format with windows
   ..remove with diskmgmt
   ... remove with diskpart
   ... repair-bde
   ... manage-bde
   ... ubuntu live cd
... mass production tool software, to override the whole stick

nothing worked. The only thing which worked was once the software M3 Bitlocker recovery Free, but just one time to access the locked partition. But, as mentioned I don't need to recover my data. With that tool I'm not able to wipe the drive.

That Bitlocker protects my data till the end is good, but that it breaks my data and my hardware in such a case is not fair.
How can I break the write-protection mode to finally wipe the hard drive?

Last night I was using my WD My Passport Ultra connected to my laptop but had performance issues accessing files so disconnected it by pulling the cable out then reconnecting, as I have done lots of times in the past. Now I am unable to view the drive at all. So it appears I have corrupted the partition of the drive by not ejecting properly before disconnecting.

The drive is full of years of videos, documents, data, pictures and memories that I just cannot afford to lose.

When I plug it in my OS recognises it with the windows bleep and it is listed in device manager as USB Mass Storage however there is no drive letter mapped through Windows explorer.

If I use a different USB cable I get the same and if I use a different Win 7 laptop I also get the same so it is definitely the HDD

I'm not aware of any diskpart commands similar to chkdsk that I can run against Disk 2.

If I check disk management it's listed as Disk 2 unknown and prompts to initialise disk but when I do this it errors Virtual Disk Manager "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

A:WD My Passport Ultra External Drive Corrupted

Hi grizzlylar,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Not a good news but then I have to call a spade a spade.

The answer is simple. If no Data recovery software is able to see your drive, no DIY data recovery is possible.

Now I do not want to repeat. Just read this post and you will know the only costly solution/ proposition..

Disk 2 is unkown, not initialized

In your case you have to contact the WD Data Recovery Partners in EMEA region.

Good day friends, I have encountered a problem with my WD My Passport 2TB 0748 external HDD. I last used/connected it to a computer about 2 months ago and it was perfectly fine. 2 days ago, I connected it and I can't access it anymore.

In My Computer in Windows 7 (or This PC in Windows 10):
It lists it as Local Disk G: (but it doesn't show the bytes used and bytes free)
In device manager:
there is a yellow exclamation point on the name of this HDD under both portable devices and disk drives.

In Disk Management:
It lists the volume as 2TB but doesn't list whether how much is being used and how much space is free

Other symptoms:
- I can't seem to open some apps when I connect this HDD to the computer but they will literally open up the second I plug out the HDD
- I also can't get the "remove safely" message to work so I plug the HDD out now
I tried this HDD in 2 computers (1 windows 10 and 1 windows 7) and all symptoms are the same.

Is there a way to recover all of my files? or at least as much as possible of my files?

I saw this thread and I have the same problem (and exact same 0748 model of hdd)
External Hard Drive: detected but does not show up in folder

But I don't have any virtual cd drive and I already uninstalled Itunes and the problem still persists. I also tried installing the SES driver like that user but same problem still.

I am not very familiar with extremely technical terms related to software/computers, so I apologize in advance.

Hello all, I'm new to the site, but am having a problem with pictures loaded on an Acomdata external hard drive. I use it to store and back up photos, recently some of the photos have become corrupted. After returning from a vacation, I was trying to organize the pictures by combining photos from multiple cameras into one file. The photos came from four different devices: a Canon Rebel, a Canon Powershot, a Samsung Galaxy Phone, and an iPhone. The pictures were all viewable on the original devices and when moved to my laptop (a Compaq Presario CQ60). When I moved them to the hard drive, some of them moved over fine and I can still view them. Other files started with one picture that was messed up with gray or pink lines. After opening that picture, most of the other pictures in that specific file also corrupted with the lines through the picture. Some of the pictures won't even load and show the message "Photo Gallery can't open this photo or video. The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted." Some random pictures in the corrupted files staid fine. I have tried moving additional pictures to the hard drive as a test, and the pictures transfer fine. Lastly, when I open the files with corrupted pictures, the thumbnails load with the original correct picture, but then change to the corrupted picture in a few seconds. Does that mean the original picture can be recovered? I've attached a picture as an example.

A:Corrupted Files on an External Hard Drive

File corruption can be caused by a hard drive that's starting to fail (all hard drives fail eventually, it's unavoidable), and external hard drives of whatever brand have proved to be less reliable than internal ones.

If that is indeed what's happening to your Acomdata drive, the problem can only get worse over time, more files on that drive will be affected, until eventually the drive fails completely and is then inaccessible & unusable. Deleting corrupted pictures from it will not stop the problem getting worse and will not stop other pictures being corrupted if the problem is with the drive itself.

You can test the Accomdata drive with SeaTools for Windows. Click "Downloads" here: http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/

There are two tests - a long one & a short one. Use the long test for a really thorough test.

Before testing it, copy all non-corrupted files from it to at least two other locations if possible, before they too become corrupted.

Well, this morning I formatted, and plugged my external HDD into my laptop once I was done, and was transferring my files. It was transferring around 120 gigs so I went and took a nap. When I woke up, my laptop was closed, and the external HDD was unplugged....I think my mom or brother did that.

Later in the day I noticed not all of my files were back on my laptop...so I plugged it in to finish getting them....
But.... When I plugged it in nothing happened. When I clicked the start orb, then went to my computer, it stopped responding (windows explorer) so....I unplugged it, and Windows Explorer was fine then. The HDD made the noise like it started up..so I don't know the problem. So, I went and plugged it into my mom's computer, it didn't recognize it / it didn't show up.

Any ideas why this has happened? Any ideas on how I can fix it?
It's a SeaGate 2 terabyte External HDD btw.

About 11 months ago I added an external LaCie Hard Drive 1TB to my system to be able to back up my C drive and to store my music files on (copy my cd collection). I partitioned into two drives J for the backup and M for the music. Over the past several months I have downloaded over 800 cd's to the M drive and it worked fine until recently where it showed as corrupted. I called LaCie and they advised that the hardware is probably ok as the computer still sees the J drive and associated volume. When I "explore" the computer it sees the M drive but there is no data (no total size or free space showing). When you click on it (the M drive) it gives the message that it is unavailable and corrupted. Lacie advised formatting the drive after attempting to recover the data (which they think is still there just corrupted). I suppose I could just format the drive and re-copy all the cd's but that took forever the first time, so I would like to try and recover them before I resort to that.

The error message reads "M is not accessable. The paremeter is incorrect" But, when I click the J partition of the same drive it shows the volume and available volume as normal. The music files were recorded using dbPowerAmp and saved in FLAC format. I also had a folder in M for converted files where I converted the FLAC files to Apple Lossless for use on my iPod. Sounds more like your J: drive lost its partition bits and thats why its not working and why your M: drive still is. If the hard drive itself was starting to go bad I would think it would affect both partitons as a partition is just a logical split of the drive.

I am trying to fix a new Toshiba Canvio 3.0 1.5TB drive that has errors. Each time I plug it in, I'm directed to run CHKDSK, but CHKDSK fails to complete with the /f parameter. The process stalls at 76%. If I run CHKDSK without the /f parameter, I get the following result:

Again, if I run CHKDSK /f, the process stalls at 76% and hangs forever. I've left the process to run overnight with no progress.

I've looked for solutions on Toshiba's website, but haven't found a solution. Any help or ideas are appreciated.

By the way, I'm not super tech-savvy, so if you have a technical solution, please give me as many detail as possible. Thank you!

A:External hard drive corrupted, CHKDSK stalls at 76% complete

I had a drive with a bad sector that would stall with CHKDSK /f. It was at the very end of the drive. I repaired the drive by formatting with Gparted or Partition Magic, one of the two, don't remember. When complete SMART reported 2 reallocated sectors and 99% health, been running fine ever since.

I have a Western Digital MyBook ES 500 GB external hard drive (USB and eSATA interfaces) for data backups formatted from a Windows XP PC that I now use with my laptop running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium. Recently my son connected it to his Apple PC and tried to create a partition to back up his files. Apparently this corrupted the partition table. I can no longer access any data on the hard drive. The drive does not appear in Computer but does appear in Device Manager and Disk Management.

I believe the problem is that the partition table (formatted for Windows) was modified by an Apple computer so that Windows can no longer tell what file system is on the partitions. My son is gone for a month and I no longer have access to his Apple computer so I can't plug the drive into an Apple computer to check if the drive gets detected.

I looked at the drive using:

1. Windows 7 Disk Management
2. Acronis Disk Director 11
3. EASEUS Partition Recovery (latest version)
4. Partition Wizard 5.2

None of them could do anything except delete or format the partitions. I saw no repair option or ability to mark the partitions as NTFS file system.

The partitions on my external drive are still there but no file system is shown for most of them. Acronis Disk Director shows the following information:

Disk 1 (GPT)
EFI 200 MB 200 MB Ba... Read more

A big chunk is unallocated. Was some of your data there? If so try Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help.

See if PW can also run Partition Wizard Check File System which can recover some partitions that are not readable.

If not some success has been reported repairing the partition table using Disk Genius trialware: http://www.diskgenius.net/

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

A:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?
Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.
I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hypethetical question, if the SQL database crashed on our MBAM server and there was no back up, will the clients check in and report their recovery keys to the new SQL database if we stood one up?
Just curious in this type of scenario...if some systems fell out of the database or the database was unusable, is there anything on the client side that would need to be done?

I use Windows 8 on my laptop, and my external HDD got encrypted with BitLocker out of the blue.

I have never used BitLocker, I do not even have it on my laptop (Control Panel does not show any icon for BitLocker & forums say it is only available with Windows 8 Pro).

Therefore, I have no idea why Windows has locked my HDD, and I have no means of recovering this as I do not have any recovery key or password (since I have never used BitLocker in the
first place).

Please help.

A:External HDD automatically locked by BitLocker

This tool can be used to turn on or turn off BitLocker, specify unlock mechanisms, update recovery methods, and unlock BitLocker-protected data drives. This tool can be used in place of the
BitLocker Drive Encryption Control Panel item. For more information, see Manage-bde.exe Parameter Reference. at www.TechNet(dot)Microsoft(dot)com/en-us/library/dd875513(v=ws.10).aspx

Try This:
manage-bde -status (Drive Letter):
Example: manage-bde -status C:
to check if Bitlocker lock your drive.
manage-bde -off (Drive Letter): example:
manage-bde -off C:
It none of its works, that means your HDD is blocked by another program, give us prompt massage or screen-shot, for further help.

Guys... I am in serious trouble and need help urgently !!

I had recently brought the Seagate Backup Plus 1TB portable hard drive.
It has a freeware called Seagate Dashboard inside it.

So , I was trying that out and moved [CUT and no copy] all my data from my laptop into the HDD and I don't know how but I locked my HDD using BITLOCKER unknowingly. I have not set any password for it and tried using the recovery key to unlock it but its useless. I checked the identification key and tried various methods to unlock it but its of no use. It says that the key is incorrect and not acceptable. I think the encryption was not done properly.

I have moved all my important data from my laptop in the HDD as I have brought a new PC. There are many important files and data in it . I will be in an extremely serious trouble if my HDD does not get unlocked OR if any of my data gets deleted.

Please help me guys... I need to fix this urgently !!!

Hello Excavior, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You might see if the tutorial below may be able to help unlock the drive. It does require that you have the correct BitLocker recovery key or password though.

I just don't remember the password and cant find the recovery key. So I just try lot of passwords and now its just ask the recovery key only. I think its because of the too many attempts that I tried to find correct passwords. I have the laptop that I
use to encrypt that harddisk but I don't have any other information. Is there anyway to remove the bitlocker without damaging the files that inside ?

I was using my work laptop at work and connected my personal USB external drive to the laptop. No problem. I used the external drive to show colleagues some pictures of my new house renovation and then disconnected the drive.
However, when I reconnected the drive to my own personal laptop at home, it informed me that it was locked by bitlocker and needed a recovery to unlock it!
At no time was I requested to bitlocker it or indeed informed that bitlocker was locking the drive. This totally sucks as I have precious family photos on the drive and now cannot access them!!
Can anyone help?

Hello! In our company we are using (amongst others) T460s and T560 laptops. Those laptops are Bitlocker encrypted. After switching on the laptop and when entering a Bitlocker PIN with the integrated keyboard everything is fine. But when using  an external keyboard, we are facing a strange behaviour: When typing a Bitlocker PIN (or also the recovery key), it randomly occurs that several keystrokes are interpreted as DOUBLE keystrokes. This holds for typing the PIN or the recovery key, but also for deleting already entered PINs and keys by pressing the backspace button. I tested this issues with several different external USB keyboars and also WITH and WITHOUT the Lenovo docking station. I am not sure whether this is a Bitlocker or an hardware issue. Affected are ALL T460 and T560 computers in the company. For all other Lenovos everything is working fine. btw: an update to the newest BIOS version did not change the issue. Please let me know, thanks, Christian

We've had a few HP 1020 and 1040 models in recently and all have the same issue. When the laptop is docked, the external keyboard does not work in the Bitlocker screen. It works in BIOS and in Windows itself, but not in Bitlocker. This means we have to open the laptop screen to input the Bitlocker PIN, then leave it open and GPO dictates that the machine hibernates when the lid is closed. We have tweaked the GPO, but to no avail. ANyone else seen this or have a solution?

if the bios is up to date, i would look at BIOS settings. I believe Fast Boot setting is Enabled in your case, which might cause usb devices not to be seen at the stage Bitlocker requires

A:Unable to open external HDD that is locked by bitlocker

Farid Rahimi,
If you haven?t already, remove the drive from whatever port you have it plugged into and try another port.
Another thing you can check is to see if there are any new updates available for your BIOS.
Take a look at any changes that it might list and if there have been any changes to the TPM, go ahead and run that update.
You?ll also want to make sure that your system settings are all correct for the port you?re using.
Hope this helps!
