Consider Disabling Attachment Preview & Reading Preview panes in Outlook for added security (0-days)

Q: Consider Disabling Attachment Preview & Reading Preview panes in Outlook for added security (0-days)

Securing Microsoft Outlook on the Windows PC (may also be applicable for Mac users).

I am unaware of any currant threats against Outlook Desktop Client, however: With all of the current threats, especially spam, Ransomware, malicious documents, .zip attachments, and even iframes and JavaScript propagating Ransomware and Malware, have you considered disabling both the Attachment Preview and/ or the Reading Pane (The part generally on the right side where you can view the message without double-clicking the message to open. That way, if you are unsure of the sender, you can move it to Junk before opening. I have done out of caution.

There have been 0-days before and they are likely to be a problem in the future as both Internet Explorer, Office and I believe Windows all have OLE integrated in them. It's also wise, as when you Open Outlook and it downloads messages, what happens if the last message it downloads is malicious and you have both the Attachment Preview and Reading Pane enabled? The email will displayed, possibly the attachment previewed (within a sandbox of some sorts such as IE). There is a potential for exploitation.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I try to preview certain Outlook files in Explorer Preview Pane I get the message 'No Preview Available.'
I have multiple mailboxes open and the preview pane works fine for messages sent to the primary mailbox, but not for the additional mailboxes. I have made sure all the mailboxes are in cached mode, I have made sure they are all indexed. I have tested on a clean image, setup all the needed mailboxes, and found that Preview Pane works fine for any message from any mailbox. I have tried running the Office Repair Tool on the affected machine with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas short of re-imaging the affected computer?

This has happened with every game I've installed that didn't come with the install of Vista - http://i36.tinypic.com/6o0kky.png

I've uninstalled the games, re-installed, right clicked and pointed to the game icons manually and still Vista refuses to display the correct icons in the preview panes. I'm at a complete loss as to what is preventing them from displaying correctly instead of one of the default system icons and have so far been unable to find a solution. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Is there a possible solution other than potentially a reinstall of the OS or at least a repair install?

I am currently running Windows 8.1, Norton 360 with E-Mail spam filter add in installed, Malwarebytes paid version and Microsoft Office 2013.

With these current application am I still at risk for malware by allowing Outlook 2013 to display message previews?  I do receive fraudulent E-Mails attempting to trick me into clicking on a link that use my real daughters name as from and my real name in the to.  It's nasty.  Message preview makes it so much easier to determine if they are fraudulent.  They are getting so darn good at making fake messages look real they are likely to catch me sooner or later.

So in a nutshell are the previews still dangerous running my current applications?

Thanks

A:Outlook 2013 Msg Preview Security

This is a question that I was researching myself several months ago.

When displaying message previews, Microsoft do take extra precautions to protect against maliciously crafted emails being able to infect systems. Mostly that protection is enough (in that it is safer to preview a message than normally view it). However, over the years there have been a handful of instances where that extra protection has been breached or shown to be inadequate (sorry, I so not have any examples - I'm going from memory of my research several months ago.). I still prefer to work with the reading pane and preview pane both turned off.

In the more recent versions of Outlook, you can't even get to view the internet message headers without opening the message first (I generally like to look at the Internet headers to determine the provenance of suspect emails). As you say, some dangerous emails look VERY good these days. One spam attack on my office network this week was so good, that although, as a human, I knew that the email was spam, syntactically the messages were very good, and the only thing I could find wrong with them was in its message headers - the senders IP would not correlate with the purported sender).

At home I use a tool called Pocketknife peek ( http://www.xintercept.com/peek/pkpeek.htm ) to inspect suspect email. I use it with Outlook 2007, but the blurb says it has been updated for 2013, and best of all it is free for personal use. I've used this product fo... Read more

Hi, I currently have a an attachment field in one of my tables that I have stored a picture in it. I am trying to figure out a way to view the image on a form, possibly in an image control box or attachment control but I am using recordsets to work with the records instead of setting the record source for the entire form.

I know how to save the attachment using VBA to any place on the computer but all I really want to do is to view it.
Code:

Set Recordset = db.OpenRecordset("SELECT * FROM Receipe WHERE ReceipeID = " & FormModule.ReceipeID)
Set InnerRecordset = Recordset.Fields("Picture").Value
Set pic = InnerRecordset.Fields("FileData")

Me!Image41.Picture = pic.Value

This is the code I am trying to get working, and the line that I always get an error on is the 'Me!Image41.Picture' line. Any advice on how to do this would be great.

Hi,

I use yahoo mail and all of a sudden, I cannot view attachments before downloading them. This is a doozy of a problem, because I use this feature quite often for work. Until a couple days ago, I never had this problem.

When I click the 'Preview' link next to an attachment (word file), I get this error every time:

We cannot display your attachment at this time. Please save this attachment to your computer instead. [Learn How]

We apologize for the inconvenience.

Does anyone know how to get around this? I've sent yahoo a "report" via their "customer service help page" but have not heard back nor do I think I will. I do have a gmail account and realize I can switch over there to preview attachments, but it would be really nice if I could just resume using Yahoo, as I have a pretty efficient system set up for work. It's not cool to have to download a file, then open it, to decide if I want to keep it. (I go through 100's of resumes a week).

Any help MUCH appreciated.

Well, one of my prayers has been answered. You can disable the animations and the smooth typing "feature" of the Office 2013 Preview. When you can type fast, that smooth animation appears like a delay and the cursor is unable to keep up with your typing. Very annoying.

It's a registry change though;
Navigate to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Graphics, create a a DWORD value named DisableAnimations. Set the data value to 1.

Note: You may have to create the KEY, Graphics in the above string

No longer do I feel seasick, like I need to vomit when using Excel and moving from field to field.

Now, if only I could replace the "outrageously" white theme with a darker theme so my eyes didn't hurt within 40 seconds of firing up an application.

Hi there
that white theme is why I can't use it at the moment.

I know "de-Uglification" isn't a primary goal for a "Preview" but they should have at least kept the basic OFFICE 2010 choices available.

Try and use this stuff in bright sunlight out of doors on a laptop --forget it -- even on a decent PC it's unuseable.

Hello,

I've screwed something up in my Windows 7, 64 Bit Version, and hope someone here can help me.

Previously I could preview .ttf Font files in the Preview Pane of Windows Explorer just by clicking on them. I could also see what the font would look like on the actual Font Icon.

However I discovered I COULD NOT view an .otf Font file so I decided to look around and find out how to get the .otf files to also preview, this is when I got into trouble.

I changed both of the file associations (.ttf and .otf) to be viewed by the Windows Font Viewer and now I can't preview any fonts. I get a generic message that they are not valid font files but they are.

Also now all the Font Icons are a blue "A" with a little magnifying glass on it instead of the previous one that looked like the actual font.

I tried reversing what I did but even though Windows 7 is still showing Font Expert as a suggested program to use, it won't let me check the little box to ALWAYS use that program.

I don't know if the previous Font Icons in Windows Explorer were due to Font Expert or if that was just something Windows Explorer showed.

I'd love to have my PREVIEW PANE back in the font display as it showed what the font would look like larger.

If someone can help me I'd be most appreciative.

Thanks so much.

They are merging Outlook.com to a new Office 365-based infrastructure. It's not something you can volunteer to manually self-opt in to, but eventually everyone will be on the new version.

There are a couple of FAQ's here:

For people using Office Outlook, they may also receive an email from Microsoft telling them that they need to remove and re-add their outlook.com account as an Exchange Account.

I noticed upon boot up 8.1 put up a Windows update notice so I went to the store and only saw some app updates. Went to the Update site and saw the security update Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 8.1 Preview for x64-based Systems (KB2870699)

Download size: 27.3 MB
You may need to restart your computer for this update to take effect.

Update type: Important

A security issue has been identified in a Microsoft software product that could affect your system. You can help protect your system by installing this update from Microsoft. For a complete listing of the issues that are included in this update, see the associated Microsoft Knowledge Base article. After you install this update, you may have to restart your system.

It downloads and installs to about the 90% mark and fails. Googling the code brings up old Vista threads. Anyone else get this to work?

I'm using pop/smtp email with Outlook XP. I also use the preview pane to view emails. It seems like it takes about 5-10 for the message to show up in the pane.

In Outlook 2000 it was almost instant.

I thought that because I have big inbox, outbox, deleted items, etc it might be why it's taking so long, but even on new machines with barely anything in there, it takes a long time.

Any ideas why?

With all of the virus floating around, I have my preview pane disabled so I do not accidentally initiate a virus with it. Too bad not everyone I work with shares my opinion. I need to find a way to REMOVE the preview pane AND Autopreview from the View menu. Does anyone know of a registry edit or an add-in I can use to take it off of Outlook! Thanks in advance!

I hate why questions.

Re-format
Re-install
Windows 2000 Pro SP4
Office 2000, SP3
THEN, Outlook 2000 setup in Corporate mode

When I open a folder, or create a new folder or sub-folder, the preview pane appears. I have turned the PP off, from the menu bar.

I have changed the quick launch toolbar, adding the " /Nopreview" switch.

1. How do I add the switch to the desktop icon's Outlook icon?

2. How do I add the switch to the start menu's Outlook icon?

3. WHY is this happening? As best I can remember, it did not happen prior to Sept 2005. Sept 2005, I had to R & R. After the R & R, I encountered the PP issue.

Thanks for your help.

A:Outlook 2000 & Preview Pane again

I found this, which solved the preview pane function, from the desktop icon.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;832561
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{00020D75-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\Shell\Open\Command
4. In the right pane, right-click Default, and then click Modify.
5. Type the path for your Outlook.exe file with the /nopreview switch in the Edit String dialog box, and then click OK.

For example, type"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE\Outlook.exe"/nopreview in the Edit String dialog box.
6. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
7. Restart Outlook 2000.

But the from the start menu, when I open Outlook 2000, the preview pane is still available and is on when I create a new folder or sub folder.

For some reason when I have the view set to preview the right side where the preview email is supposed to be is blank....all I have is a list of the emails on the left. Anyone else have this problem?

A:Cannot preview email in Outlook 2010

I have no issues viewing emails either on bottom, right etc.

Use the 'Change View' on the top left, and also also set the 'Reading Pane'

Are you sure you have an email highlighted , not just showing the account.
