Lost sound after a computer crash, shows sound working but can't hear a thing!

Q: Lost sound after a computer crash, shows sound working but can't hear a thing!

After closing a tab heavy google chrome window my pc had a crash during this crash the 1 second of the song that was playing repeated til the pc rebooted. After this tho I no longer have any sound at all from my computer. I'm running windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 installed. My speakers work I checked them with my mp3 player and the pc isn't on mute or turned down to zero. The strange part that confuses me tho is that the sound mixer window shows audio levels when i do play music or youtube but even with volume at full blast there is no audio as a work around for the time being i've set my pc to broadcast my pc's audio and then just use my lap top to tune into my station to listen to my music but this is getting old really quick when i check my sound card (realtek high definition audio?) in device manager it says 'this device is working properly' is it possible my soundcard broke/fried and it still showing it fine with audio levels moving?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I've seen that before. Try uninstalling then re-installing the drivers. Worked for me.

hey there
I have a Compaq Armada M700 with XP pro and I am having trouble with the speakers on it. they were working fine and then one day they just quit, no system sounds no music nothing. And yes I checked the mute and the drivers I have also run numerus scans and things as well and nothing seems to work.
they are internal speakers so no cords or anything to be unpluged

A:A sound appears to play but I cant hear a thing!

Could be that your internal speakers have died. Can you connect some external speakers?

You may need to disable the internal speakers first.

My sound has been out for sometime now. I have downloaded new drivers and reinstalled sound card but it still isnt working- It used to have an error message when I booted com saying cmi's sb16 driver alert and sound wouldnt play at all- when i tried it said that there was no sound card or it wasnt working properly. Now I fixed many things and I get no error messages and have no conflicts-the sound appears to play but you cant hear anythin. Windows troubleshooter said to check my system.ini file for these two dll files: wave=mmsystem.dll and midi=mmsystem.dll and I dont have either. I need these files. I tried to contact C-Media (soundcard manufacturer) but nothing yet- How can I get these two files- I can find mmsystem .dll, but that isnt wave= ,or midi=mmsystem.dll.
If I download mmsystem.dll how can I get that file to become wave=mmsystem.dll or to become midi=mmsystem.dll? I dont get it- I can find mmsystem.dll but not any with wave= or midi= in the file name- What do I do

I recently just bought a dx11 turtle beach ear force headset to replace my old one. I got it in the mail today and I can hear sound perfectly and when I talk into my mic I can hear myself. However windows 7 isn't picking up me talking, no one in skype, vent, games can gear me at all. It uses USB to power itself and then audio/microphone jacks, I thought that maybe since I was using the jacks from my motherboard it wasn't working. I went and bought a RocketFish 5.1/7.1 sound card and plugged my mic in and it still doesn't work.

here is a picture of Rcoketfish entertainment console settings and my sound/recording settings for Windows 7

A:I can hear sound but mic isn't working

I would also like to note that the mic is working on my xbox 360 and on my netbook, it only doesn't work on my main computer. I also just freshly installed windows 7 64bit again and it still is not working.

I just started to have problems on my system where it outputs no sound. I have do some troubleshooting and I still can't figure it out. Note: mic doesn't pickup sound either. I have:

checked power source to speakers
checked it was plugged into the correct speaker port
reinstalled and updated drivers
the device manager shows the on-board sound card
speakers work on other computers
in the playback menu, it shows that music is playing and speaker are the default
i plugged in USB headset and that works without a problem
I restarted computer

I am not sure if I am missing anything. I hope someone else has some sort of idea or knows if I can test if it is a hardware problem.

First let me preface this by thanking anybody that either reads my post or attempts to respond to it.

I am a gamer, and I play WoW. I use vent to talk to friends while i'm playing the game. I haven't really had any trouble with microphone or sound settings before until I got my new gateway pc from best buy with windows vista on it.

Ever since then I couldn't use my microphone on it. I have tried to improvise by checking the vista support forums for tips/tricks on fixing the general microphone settings but nothing has really helped me so far. The sound on my computer is fine. I can listen to music and hear others talking while i'm connected to ventrilo. Each time I connect to ventrilo I get this error :

Unable to activate DirectSound for selected device.
DirectSoundCaptureCreate failed, hr = 88780078

When I go to Control Panel > Sound > Recording

it shows that my microphone is unplugged. I don't understand how its unplugged when its plugged into the regular pink jack that its always been plugged into.

on the vista forums i tried to follow a suggestion of plugging my mic jack into the blue line in jack instead of the pink one I normally plug it into. I followed step by step to make sure that the microphone wasn't muted and it still isn't working.

Is there anyone that can help me fix this problem? I would really appreciate it. I hope that I was specific enough also.

A:Microphone not working, able to hear all sound but not be heard.

Are you using onboard audio or a stand-alone audio card? (sound blaster x-fi for instance)

I have done some playing around with this myself.. I personally have no issues with talking to people on vent but on TS I am unable to boost my outbound enough as to get people to actually be able to hear me.

If you are using a stand-alone card you will want to make sure your microphone is plugged into the pink microphone jack for the audio card, not the motherboard.
(if your audio card is an X-Fi xtreme gamer like mine the micrphone jack is also the SPDIF I/O jack and is white, not pink)

Also check if your onboard audio device has been DISABLED in device manager.

Then right click on your audio icon, open recording devices.
'disable' all devices listed there except for your microphone.
'enable' your microphone (if it wasnt already) and make sure it is 'set as default device'
select your microphone and open 'properties'
IF you have this tab, open 'custom' and enable the boost
go to 'levels' and put the slider on max, also enable boost IF it is listed here
go to 'advanced' and DISABLE 'allow applications to take exclusive control'
APLLY and exit and try it now =)

You might want to try to disable 'use direct sound' in your vent settings and/or play around with those settings a bit.
I have personally found that if I use direct sound in vent after a few minutes my audio 'DIES'. for some reason all inbound/outbound seizes to work.. so unfortunatelly I have to use vent with direct sound d... Read more

I have tried everything I can think of. I've turned up the volume on everything, including the system. I've done the sound/volume troubleshooter which told me it couldn't help me, I tried messing with th drivers--nothing. I know that my speakers are plugged in and that they work because I can hear sound when I talk in the microphone, just not sounds from the computer. I am beyond frustrated.

I THINK it may have something to do with the fact that I deleted SoundBlaster Live 24-bit yesterday from my programs. I was trying to free up space on my computer and the sound was still working after I did that..but as soon as I rebooted the sound did not work and it hasn't worked since then no matter what I do.

Can someone PLEASE help me? I don't know what I did.

Have you tried a few different devices (headphones/speakers)? There could be a hardware issue with one of those devices. Also, keep in mind that most desktops don?t have built-in speakers, so you do need to have a device plugged in to hear anything. If you?ve already tried a couple different pairs of headphones and speakers, the first troubleshooting step I would recommend is the easiest: restart your computer. Just go through the menus til you get to your audio drivers.

I have an HP dv6000t laptop, XP, the sound card is Conexant HD Audio. For the dv6000t model, the audio jacks (there are two, for two headphones) are at the front of the laptop, below the touchpad facing you.I tried connecting a DELL sound system that i got default with my dell desktop years ago. It comes with a subwoofer that connects (black plug and green plug) to the two audio jacks and you connect two speakers to the subwoofer. When I plugged in the green plug from the subwoofer to the right audio jack, there was a popping sound. I quickly pulled the wire and from there, no audio would play from my laptop's speakers.I can only play sound through headphones, and through the subwoofer to the speakers.I looked at the device manager, checked the "sound, video, and game controls" and it said everything was working properly, updated, and there were no red X's or exlamation points. My laptop speakers can't play system sounds, or any music. When I open the "Volume Control" window, click on advanced, under Tone Controls, there Bass and Treble are greyed out and I cant slide the bar left or right. I used to be able to.Please help. Thanks in advance. I'll try to make some screen shots asap.i made ms paint diagrams and uploaded to imagebeaveri made the above images using ms paint and google images. this is my first time using imagebeaver but hopefully its uploaded correctly.

It was working and then I hit something in the realtek HD audio manager by accident and it stopped working, I can't figure out how to fix it.

A:Can't hear sound through headphones, but it says sound is playing?

Not knowing what you did, all we can do is guess and try to help you.

Not sure if System Restore (back to an available restore date that is before whatever you did) will help or not, but one option to try.

Uninstalling/reinstalling the RealTek will probably do it. Actually just installing the latest RealTek will first uninstall the existing, have you restart the PC (Important step do not bypass this) and then will do a new install.

Download the latest High Defintion Codec from RealTek. Realtek

Several months ago I used Sound Recorder to record some songs using a USB microphone. I wrote in a file name and then played the songs back on Windows Media Player. When I recorded some songs this morning I went through the same steps but even though I saw the file in the WMP window, I could hear no sound when I clicked Play. I noticed the file was huge compared to other sound files. What did I do wrong? Of course I read through the instructions on the Help menu.

The only thing different between now and then is that I downloaded a trial WAVE editing program. I deleted this a few minutes ago but still can't hear any sound on the stuff I recorded this morning. I can still hear the older songs, though, when I click Play.

Another question: What is a good sound editing software program for someone who wants to do just basic editing tasks?

Fooling around with this problem this morning without any success has made me feel like an idiot and has drained my energy.

A:Sound Recorder: I can't hear the sound

Hello Tommy,

You may need to do this below first if you have not already to be able to record what you hear.

"What U Hear" Recording - Enable

Just to double check.
Sound Recorder - Open and Use

I'm afraid that I do not know of any good sound editing software though. Hopefully someone will come along soon to answer that one.

Hope this helps some,

My wife's system has no sound. I did an upgrade install of XP pro hoping that might take care of it to no avail. The card shows up in the device manager as working properly, but in the sounds applet in control panel it says no sound device is installed. I have tried delting the cards and reinstalling from scratch, I've tried installing a different card none of those things work. I have spent many unhappy hours trying to make the thing function again.

The system is running XP SP2
AMD athlon 2800+
Gigabyte GA 700VT600L
1 gig memory
Onboard sound or Soud Blaster Audagy (sp?)

The system I am using now is the same configuration and it has never had a problem. I should say that her sound worked until a browser hijack got through. Once I cleaned it up the sound was gone.

Having 2 systems set up the same way I thought would make troubleshooting esier. Nope.
I have all the same services running as her box and I have sound I'm out of ideas short of a reformat and reload. She teaches school and has a TON of little programs that would require me to spend all my free time fo the next month reloading her box. I am out of ideas.

I am pretty stumped with this one.

I upgraded my office to windows 7 32bit pro. 10 computers all the same, but one of them has audio issues.

When I play the sample music the volume bar shows the equalizer bouncing like it is sending out audio, but any speakers I plug into it produce no sound.

I have tried: different speakers, different jacks, 4 on the back 1 on the front, updating the audio driver, windows updates, rebooting, and yelling and now I am out of ideas.

When I use a usb based headphone I can get sound.

it lists the default sound device as a S/pdif high definition audio device...
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

A:The volume bar shows sound but no sound through speakers.

re: S/pdif high definition audio device

That's the digital output, you won't get any sound with that. Does it show "Speakers" listed in the same Window?

Right click on the Microsoft speaker icon in the taskbar, select playback devices, if you have Speakers listed, single left click on them and select "Set Default".

If you don't have speakers listed, make sure you have a pair of speakers plugged into the light green audio jack in the back then open the playback devices window as above... right click in the middle of the window and enable both "show disconnected/disabled devices".

Any speakers showing up yet?

Hey guys,

since yesterday I have a problem with my sound.

So when I restart my system everything works fine. After s few minutes videos e.g. on Youtube stop working (keep on buffering but won't play). From that moment on I can't change the system volume and trying will result in crashing the Windows Explorer. After the Explorer restarts some things start to work partially again, e.g. I can change the volume again and streams work for a few seconds each.

However, the Explorer keeps on crashing every few minutes and no multimedia stuff seems to work properly, neither Youtube nor music players like Winamp.

I suspect it is somehow related to my Logitech G35, as the problem came up today after plugging the headset in. However, I use the headset nearly daily for months now .

I had a similar issue a few months ago and fixed it after two days of asking google many different questions but I just can't remember how I did it...

I guess for now I will just go and try to kill some processes...

Thanks for your help in advice,

A:Windows Explorer crash + no sound working what-so-ever

ok seems like the crashes were caused by a Realtek HD Audio Background Prozess...

I just disabled it and it seems to work.

So the explorer doesn't crash anymore but Youtube videos still stops working properly after a few minutes. However, at least my music players work...

Ok the explorer still keeps on crashing.. seems like the reason has still something to do with my g35...

I updated my Realtek driver following this link. Seems like it fixed it for now.

(Hopefully) Last EDIT:
Youtube is still buggy. I guess it's a problem with the current version of flashplayer and completely unrelated to my other issues.

I hope people with similar problems find this helpful, as I kind of solved the problems myself.

Hello all, after a search I can't find a thread with my exact same problems... I hope you can help in some way. Three days ago my computer was working fine. I was using my Sennheiser PC151 headphones without a problem and almost everything was OK. Unfortunately I had an unexpected crash. This resulted me having to use my OS disc to start again from scratch, although there is a backup folder in my C: drive. I thought it would just be a case of reinstalling everything, but there were some very noticeable problems. I realised after attempting to watch a video that my sound was not working. There is no volume control icon in the bottom right of my screen, and when I go on 'Sound and Audio devices' in the control panel it says there is no audio device. First of all I thought I just had to update my sound card driver, so I ran dxdiag to find the make of my sound card. There is nothing on the sound tab of dxdiag, apart from a note at the bottom saying no sound card is detected. I can assure you during and after the crash I had not altered my set-up in any way, I had not changed the wiring of my headphones. Since then I have tried using my headphones in a laptop and they work straight after plugging them in. I have also tried plugging some old speakers into my computer, but still no sound. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas? I am using Windows XP in a store-bought Gateway GT5056b. I'll supply any extra info you may need. Thanks in advance.

The audio from my computer completely went dead when I turned it on. The speaker icon shows the symbol with the 'X' on it and after clicking it and going through the troubleshooter it can detect no problem. I tried updating the drivers through the HP website, and uninstall/reinstalled them but it still doesn't work. I even tried rolling back the computer to a restore point but that didn't work either.

The speakers are built into my monitor and is connected through a normal audio jack (not HDMI). I normally use my headphones through a jack built into the front of the tower.

My computer is a hp Pavillion Elite m9400f, Windows 7 Ultimate 64X (It also has a ATI HD Radeon 5770 graphics card; but I'm not sure if it's relevant to what might be causing this problem)

Any and all help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Basically, my computer will randomly crash while running certain programs. Right before it crashes, the mouse will usually be move able for about half a second, and then the screen will freeze, and any sound playing will loop the last ~.1 second over and over again (but even without any sound playing it still can crash). The only way out of this is a cold reboot. I can reproduce this crash 100% of the time with windows movie maker while trying to publish a movie to youtube. As far as I can tell, it usually crashes while my computer is uploading or downloading information (although this might not always be the case). Firefox, movie maker, pidgin file transfers, bad company 2, dragon age have all caused the crash. Games like oblivion, ragnarok online, or aion have so far never caused the crash to occur.

Attached is the bsod report. Perfmon report is not included because I'm not entirely sure how to generate it. Perfmon / report gives me a parameter incorrect error. I've never visually gotten a bsod, so I'm not sure how much the report will help.

I've also monitored the heat on both cpu and gpu and they don't seem abnormal (~40C idle and ~60 during intense games)

My specs:
OS: Win 7 64 bit (crash also occurs in win XP)
cpu: amd phenom II x4 945 3.00ghz
ram: 6 gbs of ddr2 800mhz dual channeled
gpu: nvidia geforce 9800 GT
sound: realtek onboard sound

I have an ASUS CRW 4824A and I think the sound card is integrated or I think I have DirectSound, I think just I need to install some driver to fix this, can anyone help me out? I'd appreciate it.

A:Lost sound on my computer

You either have a sound card, or onboard sound. Which is it? If you have a sound card, your audio jacks will be down lower on the back of your case, going horizontal across. If you have onboard sound, the jacks will be up higher near the usb ports, keyboard/mouse etc...

If you have onboard sound, then you have to go to your motherboard manufacturers website to download the correct driver.
If you have a sound card, you need to figure out what model it is and who makes it. And then get the driver from THEIR web site.

I'm running a Dell Dimension XP 2007 Home addition. I am also a beginner and not a computer geek. However, I'm not afraid to get at it and figure things out. After upgrading with Windows latest Internet Browser 7 my computer was so slow, it was like dial up. I ran "My Faster PC" and "Reg Cure" which didn't help much. I then ran "Uniblue Driver Scanner" and after downloading about 20+ driver updates, things started humming again. However, I have no sound. I've checked all the plug ins and they appear secure. HELP!

We have a Dell Insperon 530. Previously when this has happened we were able use the go back feature and get the sound back. Now that doesn't even work. Went to control panel, but everything seems to be ok.

A:Lost sound on computer

Hi Nick415

Funny thing: I just finished repairing an Inspiron 530 last week: nice machine, shipped with Vista. Did you downgrade to Windows XP on yours?

To fix your sound:

Visit Dell.com's support pages & enter your Service Tag to see the System Configuration of your 530. Make a note of the sound device in your system. Then select the link for drivers, and you'll see either the SoundBlaster or Realtek driver (you have one or the other device in your system ... likely the Realtek). Download the exact-match driver for your card and operating system version. Do not install the drivers yet.

Download and install the latest version of CCleaner --- http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/?tag=mncol --- Do not use it yet.

1) Boot into Safe Mode (start tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up -- during the Dell splash screen = this should produce the Safe Mode menu. Choose "Safe Mode" from the list).
2) In the Start Menu, right-click on My Computer and select Properties.
3) Select the Hardware tab.
4) Select Device Manager.
5) Right-click and uninstall the sound devices listed in the Sound, video, and game controllers category (uninstall the devices that include Uninstall as an option ... any others will be built-in generics, and won't include an uninstall option).
6) Exit Device Manager.
7) Go to Start -- Control Panel -- Add/Remove Programs ... and search for anything in the list that obviously is an audio driver or audio c... Read more

Recently I restarted my computer and my sound cut out. Winamp gives me a bad directsound driver error. I suspected a virus so I tried to look at my AVG log.. but apparently it has been offline for some time. Trying to use any antivirus/spyware app has given me a win32 error. Restarting in Safe Mode does not work. I then tried to uninstall and reinstall AVG, but to no avail.

So I went to panda and trendmicro to get a system scan and disinfect as many as I could. I tried following the steps of posting.. but I have not been able to update my windows through microsoft.

Here is the extra.txt I got from DSS

When you download it I want you to rename it to Combo-Fix.exe before you run it

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you. Please copy and paste the "C:\Combo-Fix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log so that we can continue to do any further cleaning that your system may require.

Caution: Never run and remove files with Combofix unless supervised by a security analyst.

So I have a Toshiba Satellite A505 and I have had it for some time. About 2 months ago, it would start crashing without telling me the battery was low.

After this most recent 'crash' it now reports "Consider Replacing Your Battery".

However, that is not the only new event. Now, the speakers do not work at all. The Speakers previously had issues, where the right speaker would cut out completely when I had it on low volume (but when I turned it up, the right speaker would cut in and I could turn it back down for a while before it cut out again) however now they do not work whatsoever. I know this occurred directly because of the crash because I was watching a youtube video at the time it crashed without headphones (which still work) but afterwords nothing I would try would make any sound (other than headphones).

The steps I have already taken:
Checked for updated drivers on batter and Speakers. Reset. Uninstalled completely Speaker Drivers and Battery Drivers before resetting and re-installing. And I have also reset the computer 2 more times.

A long while back, my computer had gotten some sort of virus and it was in terrible shape. I wiped it completely, partitioned it, and re-installed windows seven. It showed no signs of virus problems after that point. (and I have gotten avast since then, which has done an amazing job compared to the previous anti-virus I paid for)
I therefore believe this incident is unrelated, but of course, I could be wrong.

Hi. I' here because I can't get my computer to reinstall the sound drivers that "disappeared" after it crashed over a month ago. Had to install Win XP Pro (it was all I had) to get it back up and running but ever since, there is no sound, and I think something happened after the crash.

computer is HP COMPAQ dc7100 SFF
Win XP Professional - 64bit
Service Pack 2
Version 2003

I don't know for sure what drivers to install after I went to HPs site for this driver: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_3006103C which I was directed to from the Hardware section in System properties. This driver was not on HPs site, and I "found" it online but its from sites that might have viruses on them, so I don't know where to go or what to do right now!

Please help...this has dragged on for too long...thank you!

After i did a reformat of my computer, i can no longer hear sound or use my mic. I've already done windows update, and got all of my devices working except the speakers and mic.

I have an emachines 512mb ram, win xp, amd 3200 cpu.

Could you please look on the front of your computer and look for the model number of your emachine. It should look something like T2875. Also please check the device manager, you can do this by right clicking on the My Computer icon and go to properties. Next go to the hardware tab, and click the option labeled device manager. Verify that there is nothing that is standing out with an exclimation point or red showing conflict or unknown devices.
