Create new user/migrate old user's data, to change logon icon order

Q: Create new user/migrate old user's data, to change logon icon order

(reposted from Customization)

Having just learned from an OLD post here that renaming a user account apparently doesn't change the order in which the corresponding logon icons appear at startup -- due to the order being apparently determined by when each folder was originally created, which was when this computer was first opened back in 2011 -- I want to be able, after creating a new user account, to migrate data from the account whose name I changed. I'd been previously suggested to try User Profile Wizard from Forensit.com... would this be a good idea, or can you suggest something different?

Preferred Solution: Create new user/migrate old user's data, to change logon icon order

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am an Admin and am wanting to migrate a user's email account from an old (and failing) Win7 PC to a newer Win10 PC.  They have been using Outlook-2013 and there is an [empty] version of Outlook-2013 on the new PC also.  How do I migrate
the necessary files from one PC to the other, given that theirs is a password-protected account? (they are on long-term absence from the company and the password is unknown).  I can get into their User folder down to >Local>Application Data
but then I get 'Access Denied' even though I am logged in as Administrator.  What is the best way around this?  I just need to be able to transfer their inbox/sentbox/contacts etc to the other PC.  Thanks for any help with this.

Control Panel/User accounts create your user account and log on to it at boot up. If you just installing just bypass the setting up of a MS online account just hit next and you'll be presented with option to set up a Admin account.

For some reason my User account (the only one, this is a notebook) has ONE program that suddenly will not run correctly (AE in CS5) after working with no problems since it was installed.. This isn't an isolated case, there are many references to it on the web but no real solution..

I created a new user account just to test, and the program runs fine.. In fact, I'm pretty impressed at how fast everything is in the test account. I didn't realise how slow my account had become (only in relation to how fast the test account is)..

Should I migrate all my user documents/settings/etc to the new test account and delete my old account? Is there an easy migration path?

Or is it time to just re-format and re-install everything?

A:Corrupt User account: migrate to new user?

You can copy your old profile to the new profile. But sometimes this will migrate the problems you were facing in the old profile to the new clean profile.

I suggest instead of using the window's profile copy function, it is better to create a new user, start using it and slowly let the profile get settings, by setting up one application after another.

If your new user is crisp and the system is working quickly, there is no need to reinstall.

Hi to all...
I've installed in my g/f PC Rohos Logon key and a hdd partition crypted with bitlocker.
After an year her pestiferous little sister broke her login usb key...
After some panic I log into the system in the Safe mode with the administrator password and I've unistalled Rohos Logon key...

Now every time I get the logon screen it's empty...no user icon no password text box...

I've try to insert in the registry this key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\Credential Providers\
As I read on the Rohos logon key support but nothing change...

I've tried everything, I've removed the password, set the autologin, uncheck the ctrl+alt+canc at logon screen...
I don't know what to do...
in safe mode I can login but not in the normal start...

How can I restore the logon so can work like usual? I really don't know what to do and you're are my last hope xD (well my last g/f hope)...

Thanks anyone in advance

A:No logon user icon so...no login to the OS

I would Clean Reinstall this time using the normal Win7 User account password log-in.

Leave the Guest account if the sister needs to use the PC as this will restrict what she can do, or create for sister a named Standard User account which requires elevated permissions from Admin to change anything.

How can I change Useraccount order on login screen in windows 7?
Any help (preferably without messing around with stuff like registry keys)?

thanks in advance!

A:Change User-account order on login screen

Hi,It seems no option for that. Even gpedit.msc only provide the option to change " Apply the default user logon picture to all users" under Computer Configuration, Administrative Templates, Control Panel, and User Accounts.Logon screen shows the user accounts in alphabetical order based on the names first given to the account when it is created. If you change the user account name later, it does no longer change the order accounts are presented. Reason is simple: even if you change the user account name later, the user account folder keeps the original name. Renaming the user subfolders in C:\Users does not change the situation. What all this means is that you have to think the logon screen account order already when creating accounts.

I'm trying to change some icons. I know some software allowing to apply icon packs (Stardock, tuneup utilities) but they only change system folders and file types. What I want is to be able to change specific folder icons.

For example in my User folder I have some subfolders (backups, projects, icons etc). I want something that allows me to change all of those folder icons together and save them as a theme so I can apply different icon themes when I want to.

Welcome to the Seven Forums
Changing individual folder icons in some kind of theme pack I do not think it is possible. You may want to look at Rainbow Folder here Programy Aionela (English Version) - Free software for everyone ! where you can change the individual folder color but you will lose thumbnail previews and large folder view.

I recently bought 2 new computers a router and networked the home. It wasn't easy but done. I have the host computer and my children are each on wireless as clients. Both children can access internet, but only 1 can access printer. I actually figured out the problem(that's huge as I'm a network idiot). My son's computer (can't use printer) is using my old computer with MY name on it. I am on the new computer with MY name on it. So when he tries to access the printer it doesn't know where to go. I have windows xp HOME and from what I see I can't change the name on his computer (the folder immediately under documents & settings). I followed instructions to copy from one folder to another (ie, Mine to his) using a 3rd administrator account. I could copy any account but mine. Now I need help. Can anyone offer any ideas? Is there software that can do this? I don't even mind changing the name on my present computer but it also is windows xp home. I eagerly await your instructions. Thank you from all of us.

If your newly created accounts can't log on, then it is time to check for something else.

In case there is hard drive corruption, I would check the hard drive. Right click on Drive C and choose Properties, > Tools tab > Check Now. The machine will need to reboot for the check to begin. See if the check reports of any problems.

Hi all,

I had to repair Windows XP Home from original disk because of a system 32 error.

Now when I start Windows on the welcome page it says "To begin, click your user name" but the right part of the screen where the users normally are is completely blank. There are no users to choose from.

I can run Safe Mode, so I have tried the following

1. In safe mode went to Control Panel>Users> and added a new user and checked the Administrator password was still the same (yes). This made no difference and blue logon screen still asked me to choose a user but had no users showing.

2. In safe mode Start>Run "Control Userpasswords2" and unchecked "Users must use a password on this computer". This has now created the error when I boot "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction". Then goes back to blue "To begin, click your user name" but no users.

3. Tried repairing Win XP AGAIN, but no difference.

Has anyone seen this problem before? I would so appreciate any input.

Hello I am new here and need a little help

I have Vista Ultimate x64 and when I click start then click on my user name all personal files come up however "Desktop" has a standard icon instead of the Vista default icon

I right click on it hit properties but there is no customize tab so I tried to edit the desktop.ini file it is currently:

[email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21769

Nothing still the standard folder icon so I think for some reason it is flagged as a system file when it should be flagged as non-system file

I also tried right clicking the desktop -> personalize hit change desktop icon highlight my user name click restore defaults hit apply then then ok and nothing

I did reboot my PC after making all of the above changes

If I could get it back to the default icon that would be great thanks

EDIT: forgot to mention the customize tab is there if I click on other folders clike C:\Fraps for example

I would like to create a new user and migrate all data/settings/etc. from an existing user to the new user, on the same computer. Reason is some conflicting names between some computers on the same network and a Windows Home Server.

I tried changing the name of the user, but that doens't change the name of the profile. That created some confusion with Remote Desktop. Seems that even though I changed the user name, I had to log on via Remote Desktop using the old user name.

I've read about a method of creating the new user, logging on then off, logging on as the old user and just copying all the files from one user to the other after turning on show system and hidden files, etc. That doesn't migrate any settings I wouldn't think, only files. And another problem is there isn't enough hdd space to copy the profile, not sure what to do other than get a larger hdd, which I could do if totally needed.

I looked at the USMT, a little, but it looked like a lot of work for what I was doing.

I've also seen a 21 step method by Joshua Mouch which still involved copying the files.

Is there a way to just change the user name and then change the profile name that coincided with that user? That way no files are copied or moved, just changing the profile name associated with that user.

edit: I just found this, does this really work? That's all I want to do, change the user name and have that profile name match the user name.

I am a lab technician for Microsoft classes at a community college. One of our students somehow messed up his hard drive. The computer is running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. The system has two administrator accounts and one standard user account. I am still able to logon with those accounts and there are SID keys for each of these users in the registry.

Now when we create a new user, the account is created without any problems. The user shows up on the logon page and after running the net user command, it shows up there as well. When I try to logon with the new user, I get a message: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

None of the new user accounts show up in the registry. The other anomaly that I see is that the Default User folder is missing in each of the Users subdirectory for the three accounts where I have no problems.

I have read the Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 947215 and none of the methods apply to my problem. I also checked Local Group Policies and the Do not logon users with temporary profiles setting is not configured. I would appreciate any thoughts that anyone has this problem.

I'm running Win 7. About the virus - at first each time I started the computer I saw an Internet Security fake scan, and it disabled all .exe. Now I see a US Courts MoneyPak screen. Safe Mode won't start. System restore doesn't work either because the restore points are too recent. I googled how to remove the virus, but most require dowloading and installing programs - which I don't want to do. I would prefer to manually delete the virus files. I found a couple videos that edit the registry, but I can't find the infected files in my reg. Which got me to thinking... Using the command prompt I created a new user which creates a new, clean reg. No problems with the computer logged in as the new user. All the programs work ok, and I've copied all the files from the infected user to the new user. If I now delete the infected user, does that also delete the registry for that user and the virus along with it (assuming the virus is in the registry)?

I know this seems like a trivial thing, but just curious if anyone can figure out why it broke.

Originally, I went into C:\Users and went into the Properties of my profile folder. Went to the Customize tab, then Change Icon and chose a custom icon.

After doing this, when I would click on the start button and hover over my name in the upper right part of the start menu, the icon would change to that of my custom icon (visual explanation of what I mean:

Anyway, now the problem... it worked fine for several months, then it suddenly stopped showing my custom icon. As you can see in that picture it went back to the default generic icon when I hover over my name.

So I go back into the Properties of my C:\Users\David folder, back to Customize, but then beside the Change Icon button, the sample of what it will look like still shows my custom icon, yet it's not displaying anymore. For giggles, I click change icon and again browse to my custom icon, and hit OK on everything. But it's just not working.

I've tried choosing to restore the default icon option, and then change it to something custom again. I've tried different custom icons, Ive tried using native windows icons. In the GUI it appears as if my choice was taken, yet on the start menu the icon continues to just be the default one.

Just curious if anyone would have any suggestions. TiA!

Hi there, welcome to the forums

Am sorry to hear that you have this problem, especially because I have never even heard of it, did a BSOD occur? A memory issue? Maybe am barking up the wrong tree, but its quite odd.

A simple question, have you tried a system restore?

It may restore you saved games and what not, it wont affect your user files as in your 'documents' and 'pictures' library. So if you can restore your system files as in saved games. Maybe you could just copy your other files back over.

On build 10586 I noticed a new Desktop Icon: 'desktop' - solid yellow icon. No need for that on the desktop so I put it in the Recycle Bin and to my amazement a popup appeared - "This folder is too big to recycle, do you want to permanently delete it?" after it compiled the size.
IF were to go ahead and do this - the Desktop clears out of folders, a blank Desktop.

On build 10586 I noticed a new Desktop Icon: 'my user name' . I had no reason to go directly to that folder in C:\Users so I put it in the Recycle Bin and to my amazement it started to compile the size, after that the popup would have appeared - "This folder is too big to recycle, do you want to permanently delete it?"
IF were to go ahead and do this - the ENTIRE CURRENT USER FOLDER would be GONE.

I'm now running 11099.rs_release.160109-1156 - which "fixed it" by requiring Administrator approval to continue.
Why is any Desktop Icon once deleted deleting any other file but itself?

System Restore wouldn't do any good for that 700GB of videos gone.

Hi! In the next couple days I will be installing an Asrock Z77 OC formula with an Intel Core i7 3770K processor. I have a lot of programs that have user data that I don't want to lose. What is the best way to go about doing this? I already have movies, books and music on external hard drives but want to backup the program profiles associated with them.

I've only had one user profile "Admin" (Locks on other user profiles) but was finally able to locate it with this command %userprofile%\AppData .

Do I copy the whole folder ie Mozilla, Thunderbird and place on an external hard drive and then transfer back after the new install or only part of the folder.

Another example is Newsbin that I use to download from newsgroups and it has my server info, all the newsgroup headers that I've subscribed to. So would I backup the whole folder.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated to save as much data as I can for important programs.

Thanks, Ken

A:How to backup user data before major hardware change

I know that with Firefox and Thunderbird, it really is just as simple as putting the contents of the user folder in a safe place. I learned this by having the same desire that you have, so I began Googling things like "How to backup Firefox" (and other programs) and I eventually had most of them figured out thanks to that.

For Firefox (and it works in a nearly identical way for Thunderbird), you need to copy the contents of the user folder that has the randomly generated name. For example, mine is 6k60u6q3.default. Yours will have a similar name (random string followed by ".default"). Copy/paste the contents of this folder to a safe place. After the fresh installation of Windows and after installing Firefox, close Firefox and find the new 'randomstring.default' folder and copy/paste the files into this folder. Open Firefox and it will be just like you never left - with one exception: your Plugins. I'm talking about Flash, Shockwave, Java, QuickTime, Adobe Acrobat, etc. Your extensions and themes will remain intact.

Do the same for Thunderbird (although, it's been a couple of years since I last used it).

Regarding other programs, check for built-in backup features (or Export options).

My user profile became corrupted after years of problem-free usage (no clue why), so now I always end up in a temporary account after a reboot.

As per Microsoft's instructions I found here Fix a corrupted user profile - Windows Help, I

1. created a new account
2. logged out and logged in again using another account (not the newly created one)
3. tried to copy the data from the account that had its user profile corrupted to the new account.

However, under C:\Users, the user folder I want to copy from is a white generic icon (not a folder) and it is padlocked and has a size of 0KB - so I can't open it to copy from. Looking at how much data is on C: it looks as if all my data could still be there (I hope).

How could I get access to copy all data from my old account into the new account?

Many thanks in advance for some hints as to what to do!

That fixed it, and I've had no problems since. I hope that helps.

It is an HP computer that my brother brought over because it wouldn't boot. It was giving me a "bootmgr is compressed" message. So I got my Vista repair disc and uncompressed his drive. That got rid of that message but then it was giving me winload.exe errors. So I fixed that and FINALLY it booted up but when I clicked on his user account to log on, I get this error message. I have searched for answers. I came across a fix where you edit the registry if there is a duplicate entry in the profiles section but there isn't an extra one. I can boot into safe mode but I get no administrative tools, no ability to see the event viewer or manage users (idk if this is normal). I did a command I found to make the default administrator account active or something like that, and now when it boots up, there is his user account, and an admin user. If I click his user to log on, I get the error message. If I click the admin account, it loads, but it loads telling me the Vista copy is not genuine.

Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Why is the admin account telling me Vista is not genuine? Thank you.

When I tried to log on to administrator account on vista laptop this morning I got the following error massage "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." I did some research and found a potential solution: The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

However the problem is that the solution needs a working administrartor account and the only account I'm able to log in is a standard one with no power to change account type or boot into admin safe mode/ do a command prompt whatsoever.

Would anyone happen to have an alternative solution that doesn't require an admin account to fix this?

A:Vista - The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Was able to log on in safe mode and follow the registry edit procedure. Thanks anyway

I installed Win 7 x32 with a user name "user1" a long time ago. At some point I changed the User's name to "Karen" to make it easier to spot on the home network, etc. The Computer Name ("Dell3100") has not changed.

Today I wanted to connect to the computer "Karen" using my workgroup (not a homegroup). All of my other computers now share with workgroup. However, the computer "Karen" does not require a password to logon so when I tried to connect via the workgroup, I got a popup box asking for the Credentials to Connect. I need to enter the User Name and Password to connect to "Dell3100". And I and wife don't know the password.

Anyways, I reset the password using the "Reset Forgotten Password" tutorial going into registry etc.. That worked, but I still could not access the computer Karen - windows would not accept the password.

Running "net users" I see that I don't have a User "Karen", I have a user "user1". So i used that user name with the new password and I'm connected. All is good.

But how do I get rid of "user1" and replace with "Karen"? Can this be done?

When a new user is created in Windows, either the first user when Windows is installed or any user later on, and the new user has signed in to Windows first time, the user profile is created and named. Any later username change does not change the name of the user profile.

An example, if my ex-wife had created a user account for me on a Windows computer she had most probably named it as "Idiot". If I then later on changed my username on that computer from "Idiot" to "Kari", my profile had remained as "Idiot".

Basically, the easiest way to change this is to create a new user account and profile with the preferred name, copy the personal files and folders from C:\Users\Wrong_Username folder to C:\Users\New_Username, and delete the user Wrong_Username completely.

In your case now you can try the method told in this tutorial: User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name

Hi there,

In Win-7, as an admin-user, it was easy to change the picture from another user. In Win-8 I'm only able to find where I can change my own picture. Can't I set it anymore for other users?

Hello all - I have a full AD domain set up at home and have been using the client/domain model for a couple of years now. Each of my 4 client PC's is part of the domain along with the 2 user accounts we use here. In the interest of simplifying my home computing "infrastructure", I want to get rid of the servers and go back to a simple approach with my 4 clients, a firewall/switch and the cable modem.

Is there a migration utility that will allow me to take my users' desktop settings/profile from the domain back to just a local workgroup? Do I remove the PC's from the domain, then migrate desktop settings?

A:Migrate XP Domain user to Workgroup

You can create and then log in with the new local user account, log off, log in with another admin account. Then copy the domain user's home directory to the new local user's home directory.

I'm getting this error message.
I did a google search and found this: You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon
But did not help me. I also did a search here and found a few topics with this error message though they didn't solve my problem either, because mine problem seems to be different.

I can login to existing accounts. But I can't login to new ones.
So when I go to the registry editor there's no folder for the new accounts. They just don't exist at all. Only the existing ones.
I create a new user account at the Users menu in Control panel and they show up at login screen. When I click them, it starts the waiting icon saying "Logging in" then after a few seconds, this error message pops up. I can click OK and then it says "logging off" and goes back to the login screen.
I do have access to an administrator account and a standard account, I can log in to both

I don't have any system restore points before this started happening. i'm using ESET Smart Security as my antivirus but I don't think it's causing the problem, I uninstalled it and it didn't work then either so I reinstalled it back.
Please help me what could be wrong?
