I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try using a different connection--hdmi would be best if the laptop has that. You can use a hdmi to dvi cable--same technology and those work. Those can be bought for less than $10.

I am currently troubleshooting about 15 laptop/docking station/dual monitor combinations all with the same issue.  When the laptop is sleeping and then docked the displayport monitor will not wake up.  It has to be unplugged and replugged into the docking station each time.   The second screen plugged in via VGA does wake up as I can move the mouse on it but the DP screen will continue to sleep. The setup:   Elitebook Folio 1040 G3 docked into a HP 2013 Ultraslim docking station.  2 monitors, both dell, one connected via Displayport the other VGA.  The monitors are some variation of a Dell 1914s. Steps taken to try and fix:1)Updated ALL drivers on the computer.2)Updated Docking station firmware (2.30), bios firmware, monitor firmware.3)Installed Displaylink and ran the configuration tools.4)Disabled DDC/Ci on the monitors.5)Ensured the monitor is set to the DP and not auto select.6)Installed the monitor drivers to look for additional settings Nothing I have done has had any change.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My external monitor ASUS PB278Q stopped working. I switched out the DP cable which is newly purchased. I have my GPU driver updated and I'm pretty sure I've updated most other drivers on my laptop as well. I'm connecting the DP through the 433835U TP MiniDock Plus Series 3 (https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-433835U-MiniDock-Docking-Station/dp/B0085MQLMQ). For some  reason the laptop doesn't seem to detect the monitor or vice versa. The monitor says DP cable no signal. Other inputs like the power adapter and the wireless mouse I attach to the docking station do work however. I'm not sure what else I'm looking at. I haven't tried using the other inputs like the hdmi (id have to buy an adapter) or the VGA and the one other one it has since I dont have cable for those... I'm not sure how to resolve this. Please provide support, thanks.

I'm suffering from a creepy issue that my P50(E3-1505M, 16G non-ECC, M2000M) stutters while connecting with my external monitor (Dell [email protected]*1200) via the onboard mini displayport. It seems no problem while I connecting them via the onboard HDMI port, but if I connect them via the mini displayport (wether a miniDP-DP cable or a miniDP-DVI cable), the PC stutters while running 3D programs (like some 3D games), and, meanwhile, the CPU usage gets EXTREMLY high. I just want to know what's the issue probably be in this case? The Graphic card seems normal, and the mini displayport works, but how can a mini displayport connection makes the CPU usage high? Thank you!

On the XPS 15 9550, can an external monitor with Displayport inputs be connect directly into the laptop's USB-C Thunderbolt output using a straight miniDisplayport-to-Displayport cable?  Similarly, can a miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter cable be plugged directly into the USB-C Thunderbolt port to drive older monitors/projectors? Or is the TB15 Dock mandatory in order to get the computer talking to  external video devices through its Thunderbolt port output?

Last week, my TB15 worked pretty reliably. However, starting today, the DisplayPort just randomly shuts done. The only fix is to reboot the laptop.
The HDMI output continues to work fine.
This is really slowing me down, because I rely heavily on multiple monitors.
Anyone else seeing issues with the DisplayPort on the TB15?
I'm pretty sure this is a heat issue. The unit is always hot to the touch when it shuts down.

Good morning,I have a DELL XPS 15 laptop for photography, with a great Ultrasharp U2713H (not HM).I have to use a mini-DP to DP converter cable in order to connect them together, and it worked very good until I upgraded my OS from Windows 8.1 to 10 last year.Since this upgrade, the communication between my computer and the monitor is just completely not working. The monitor says "entrer en economiser puissance" (I'm french). The HDMI connection works just fine, but is unable to give me the full WQHD resolution.I tried 2 differents mini-DP to DP cables with the same results. My laptop doesn't even show the external monitor on the display settings window, and the "fn" quick launch for screen sharing options doesn't solved the problem at all.I have updated the Intel HD4000 driver, and the Nvidia GT630M driver, but the problem is still here.At the begining I thought this problem will probably be solved quickly by a DELL driver release, but nothing happened, and I'm stuck for almost one year now, trying to solve this apparently "tiny problem".... And apparently I am not the only DELL user experiencing this issue, almost all the people with the same problem have downgraded to 8.1 or 7 and the problem was solved, but I don't want to go back to 8.1  because I really don't like this windows version...

I am in the process of upgrading my household desktop from a Dell Dimension 4450 (Pentium 4) running Windows XP Home (SP3) to a Dell XPS 8700 (Intel 4Core i7-4770) under Windows 8 (x64).

During the course of using Revo Uninstaller to install / reinstall additional software I had an "oops" moment, and accidently removed an application one line below the intended target.

The software removed was "softOSD.exe". Research  on the web indicates that it is supplied to Dell by a Taiwanese company EnTech, and that its function is to help manage the monitor -- in my case a Dell U2412M. This research also revealed that in the past softOSD has been suspected of causing problems with displays, and there are several articles out there offering ways of removing it (or viruses that have "borrowed" the name).

My problem is slightly different -- I have not been able to find any site from where I could download a replacement version, assuming I that should want to. Can anyone offer any insight as to whether I should be worried about the lack of this item (no obvious effects so far) and try to replace it? If replacement is the way to go, where can I find a download site?

HELP! I am trying to connect my Dell U2412M 24" monitor to my Lenovo 720 Yoga Laptop.  I need to see a large screen for a spreadsheet for a project that is due immediatelly. I last used this monitor with my prior coputer, with a simple HDMI cable.  No such port on my 720, as far as I can see... 1.  Is there a hidden HDMI port on the 720- Yoga? 2.  If not, Can I use the regular, "box" USB port?  I do NOT need audio, just video. 3.  What specific cable will work?  Cheap is best, this monitor is not touch screen and was in a vehicle file and may not even work well.  It does turn on though... 4.  MUST I use the USB-C port on the Lenovo 720?  I strongly prefer not to, as it is occupied already, and I don't want to buy an expensive double port gizmo.  I just need to hook up this monitor, and quickly, for video. 5.  If I MUST use the USB-C port on the 720, same question as above, what is the CHEAPEST cable or gizmo that I need?  Where to get (Amazon, Best Buy, Micro Center, etc.).  A link to a specific product would be greatly appreciated. I am VERY frustrated!  I tried to contact Micro Center, Dell, Lenovo and Best Buy by chat, phone, etc.  No luck with any of those!  So, please help! Thank you!

A:Problem connecting my Compaq Monitor to My Laptop

Hi there @MarenFrancis, May the Forums be with you! It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel.  I understand that your display is not showing any output when connected to your Lenovo laptop.  I am happy to help with this. Does the built in screen on the laptop still work? Can you test the S2022a  connected to any other device to see if it receives anything?Have you tried a different video cable to connect the display? Also if you have another display, try connecting it to the same video connection on the Lenovo laptop, and see if you get the same type of response as with the S2022a. If all devices, connected to that port have the same type of non-display screen, then the issue is going to be with the laptop itself. Possibly the port, or the graphics card, or something more software related. In that case you should contact Lenovo Support. Please let me know whether that works for you, and if it does resolve your issue, please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

The laptop itself has a 1440p screen

Did not have this problem with my windows 8.1 laptop or windows 10. I tried switching to windows 10 from windows 7 and had a bad experience however with other things so I'll be sticking to win7

Often when I initially turn my computer on I get the message from the latest AMD driver:
"The System has detected a problem with the connection between your computer and the DisplayPort display that will prevent you from using the highest resolutions and/or refresh rates." and my 4k monitor would be in 30 hz not 60hz. To fix this problem I either reset my computer or reset the monitor and most of the time it will then go to 60hz. I have already tried a new displayport cable, fresh installed the video drivers and face the same problem. Can anyone help please?

Hey, I had the same problem and I just solved mine, so hopefully it will help yours too.

All I did was unplugged the power cable for 5-10 seconds. After I did that Windows prompted me that "You must restart your computer for these changes to take effect."

Once I restarted everything was fixed. Hope it helps! Good luck to you!

I had my setup working perfectly on Arch Linux before updating my bios. The dock could be plugged and unplogged at will without crashing. After updating to the latest bios (To get the Intel ME vulnerability patch) it doesn't work anymore.
Connected on the dock:
One 1080P screen (HDMI)
Another 1080P screen (Display port)
USB mouse and keyboard
Ethernet cable
3.5mm jack to sound system

Setup that worked
Bios: 1.2.18
Kernel: 4.10.6-1-ARCH

Setup that crashes
Bios: 1.2.25
Kernel: 4.10.6-1-ARCH
Kernel: 4.10.13-1-ARCH

Expected behavior
Connecting the dock when the laptop is powered works.
Connecting the dock when the laptop is turned off and booted works

Actual behavior
Connecting the dock when the laptop is powered crashes the system
Connecting the dock when the laptop is truned off works, but mouse and keyboard don't work.

Anyone has pointers on how I could resolve this issue?

I am plugging a HDMI cable into the HDMI port on a Dell E5440 laptop and the other end of the cable, which is Display Port, into a Dell P1914S monitor.
Nothing shows on the external monitor no matter what I do or try on either the laptop or monitor?  I have tried this on a Dell E7000 series laptop also with no result on that one either?
Does the HDMI port on Dell laptops support video or do I need to utilise some other means of connecting a second monitor.  Bear in mind there is no VGA output on these laptops.

Good day all,
How can i accomplish a dual monitor setup with the XPS15. I also have a Dell Adapter DA200. Can i use the on board HDMI and the external HDMI on the DA200 to achieve this? Getting a docking station is a last resort because of the my budget. Thanks in advance.

A:Dual monitor with XPS15 9560

You have a lot of ways to accomplish dual displays.  Actually you could even have triple external displays if you wanted, although you can only have 3 displays active at the same time, so in that case the built-in panel would have to stay off.
Yes, you can use the HDMI and USB-C connector (which has a DisplayPort output wired to it) at the same time.  The DA200 would work, and so would any other USB-C to DisplayPort/HDMI dongle you'd find on the market.  And then there are Thunderbolt 3 to DUAL DisplayPort dongles as well, but if you want to use those and might then need DisplayPort to HDMI/DVI dongles attached to THAT, then there are some additional considerations I can get into.
And finally on the dock front, you can get the WD15 or TB16 docks.  The former can support dual 1080p or a single 1600p display (or 4K, but only at 30 Hz), whereas the latter can support dual 4K @ 60 Hz or triple 2560x1600.  However, due to the power requirements of the 9560, if you get a WD15 you'd need the version with the 180W adapter (not 130W) and if you get the TB16 you'd need the version with the 240W adapter (not 180W).

Hi, got myself a VGA male / RGB plug, but can't get the screen right. I've played around with display changing resolution, refresher rates, etc., but nothing is working.

TV is Panasonic model TC29GX20R

TV came with the apartment I'm renting, don't have instruction manual.

Can anyone help me?

A:CRT Monitor connecting with laptop

I could not find any free on-line documentation for the TC29GX20R model number TV to confirm my suspicions. I am making some educated guesses here.

If the TV uses a set of three RCA video input jacks labeled or color coded "Red", "Green" and "Blue", it most likely needs composite sync added to the green video channel. This not something you will find supported on most laptop or desktop VGA output ports. The typical VGA output uses separate pins for horizontal and vertical digital sync in addition to the red, green and blue analog video outputs.

I recall seeing years ago small adapter boxes that would combine the H &V VGA sync signals and then add them to the green output channel and jut pass the red and blue signals straight through. These would only work if the TV and computer supported a common video resolution and timing.

Hey guys,

i'm trying to fix a friend's laptop whose lcd screen went out (all it does now is display pure white). I'm trying to make it usable again by connecting it to a regular monitor. However, to do this, i have to change the settings to allow it to display on a monitor, but of course, i can't change these settings without a display to see what i'm doing. Is there any way to force it to display on an external monitor without going through the video card settings?
I don't have all the details on his laptop. It is a dell, inspiron i think. and i think it has a radeon video card, but i'm not sure of this. and yes, it does have an external monitor output jack.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

A:Help Connecting a Monitor to a Laptop

you shouldn't have to force it to do anything, the 2 laptops i've owned (including my current laptop which is a Dell Inspiron 8000) will display on a VGA monitor just by plugging it in and rebooting. when you plug in a monitior, the laptop should default to the monitor, and not the LCD.

are you sure that the problem is a bad monitor?? you may just have a dirty connection between the LCD panel and the mobo. it has always been a problem with my inspiron. but it is easily fixed. open the laptop all the way (so it is basically flat), then pry up the cover where the volume/shortcut buttons are (pull up from the sides, there are no screws or anything) you will see a flat ribbon cable that plugs into the mobo/vid card. it should have a little "handle" that you can use to remove it. carefully pull out the cable and blow out all of the dirt from the connector, carefully plug it back in and boot up, hopefully you will have video again

Generally, the TV must be in AV mode, and via the Function keys on the Laptop you switch the Display output to the 'video out' jack/cable. Now the desktop is on the TV screen...in usually poor quality. Then you start the movie application and eat popcorn!

Hi,

On the old computer I connected two screens using the d-ports on my docking station in combination with one display using the hdmi port in my laptop. Now, with my new computer, I can either connect two screens via the d-port's on my docking station, but then the hdmi port does not work, and the display says there is no signal coming out of my computer. When I pull the two d-port cords out, the hdmi port starts working automatically.

When we connect an older ADI 19" monitor to a Vista laptop, it shows no images even though the monitor power light is green, indicating a video signal.

I played with all the display settings (refresh rate, resolution), the function-F5 key to select the display, etc., did not help.

When I connect a different monitor to the laptop it runs instantly, so the VGA port and laptop work fine.

When I connect the ADI monitor to a different laptop, an older WinME laptop, it works fine instantly. So the monitor works fine.

In display properties it shows the monitor as a non-pnp generic monitor. It says the driver is installed and the device is working correctly.

I decided to try a different driver, so I looked online to find a monitor driver, but when I tried to install it, Vista said it already had the most up to date driver installed. And monitors usually run anyway even without the driver, so I am not sure if looking for a driver is the way to go.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Also to make matters worse the laptop LOVED to send out a really high frequency to the VGA port meaning that most of my monitors would display garbage or shut off (like you describe) whenever I used a resolution beyond 640x480.

I would suggest hooking the laptop up to a new monitor (if you have one) and see if it works OK, then check and see if it will even allow you to set the refresh rate lower to something more reasonable like 60hz or so (old monitors like this rate or lower)
Or if you don't have a newer CRT simply try the laptop at the lowest resolution or in safe mode and see if it fires the screen up, if so the monitor might be getting too hi of a sync rate from the lappy.

Now if the problem is AT BOOT that makes things more complicated, if you can get into the bios there is sometimes a VGA refresh rate setting (not always called that, sometimes called VESA settings ) if its set to 72 or higher try setting it to 60 or 43, lower is better when talking old crts

Also some laptops have a setting in the bios to send the picture to either the internal monitor, external monitor or both, sometimes that needs to be changed OR if th... Read more

I recently purchased a sager 2740 laptop from xoticpc and it will take a while to receive it and have question. I always used laptop or desktop and connected it to monitor.

My asus laptop i connected it to a monitor via VGA the blue cable. There isn't a dvi spot on my laptop.

I also have an xps 8100 desktop that could connect to a monitor by either VGA or DVI- the white/gray cable.

With my asus u45jc-a1, is vga or hdmi my only 2 options to connect to a monitor?

I assume hdmi is always an option to connect from any laptop to a monitor? Is hdmi basically any method of connecting computer to monitor such as vga or dvi?

I took a look at the sager 2740 laptop specifications and i see hdmi but i don't see vga or dvi. Does that mean i will have to get an HDMI cable to connect to a monitor? Or does it has the vga or dvi? Obviously if it has vga or dvi i wouldn't need to get an hdmi cable. Just want to make sure here as i haven't used an hdmi cable.

A:Connecting New Laptop to Monitor Question

Would either of these be fine for the sager 2740 and an external monitor?

Also, whats the difference between with ethernet vs the one without?

Also, is there a reason why ppl need very long hdmi? I assume if you going to connect a laptop to a big tv across the room, you going to need a pretty long hdmi? But if you just going to connect the monitor to the laptop very close, then 10 feet is more then enough? I will be connecting the sager 2740 to an external monitor the whole time and want to make sure it would work

As the title says, I would like to connect a second monitor to my laptop. I understand how to do this by Display>Properties>"Extend my desktop onto this monitor." However, what I would like to do is display a copy of my desktop on the monitor (start menus, icons, and all), not extend the desktop onto it. How do I do this?

It depends on the type of video card. With our Dells, using the Intel video drivers, the option you are referring to is Desktop Cloning. It may be called something different on your system, but the idea is the same.

I have a gaming laptop (ASUS ROG GL552) that has so far played games like sleeping dogs, arkham origins, and skyrim pretty nicely on medium to low settings (which is perfectly cool with me). I would guess that my laptop never goes above 60 degrees Celcius (140 Farenheit) while playing these games. Would connecting my laptop to a computer monitor put any less stress on my laptop, reducing the heat?

A:Connecting a Gaming Laptop to a Monitor

If the resolution was the same, no. 60 degrees for a laptop during gaming or any intensive task is actually a great temperature.

When we connect an older ADI 19" monitor to a Vista laptop, it shows no images even though the monitor power light is green, indicating a video signal.

I played with all the display settings (refresh rate, resolution), the function-F5 key to select the display, etc. In display properties it shows the monitor as a non-pnp generic monitor.

When I connect a different monitor to the laptop it runs instantly.

When I connect the ADI monitor to a different laptop, an older WinME laptop, it works fine instantly.

I looked online to find a monitor driver, but when I tried to install it, Vista said it already had the most up to date driver installed. And monitors usually run anyway even without the driver, so I am not sure if looking for a driver is the way to go.

Any ideas?
Thanks

Might be of more use if we knew your system specs (lower left corner) so we know what video card, memory, etc

I've been trying to connect my monitor as a second screen to mt laptop via a hdmi cable connected from screen to thunderbolt.
As soon as i plug in the HDMI cable to the thunderbolt, the screen on the laptop goes and nothing happens on the Dell U2711.
I've tried playing with F8 and also the Intel Graphics software to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Connect directly from the HDMI out port on the computer to the input on the monitor. Skip the Thunderbolt connection.

I just purchased a large stand alone monitor to connect to my HP Pavilion G Series laptop.  I want to use it instead of my laptop monitor/screen (I also have a stand alone keyboard that I've been using for years).  With the stand alone monitor connected to my laptop, I want to close my laptop and use my stand alone keyboard and monitor.  But, when I close my laptop, it goes into slee mode.  How to I prevent it goign into sleep mode so I can still work?
