[SOLVED] computer will not boot except in safe mode or safe mode with networking.

Q: [SOLVED] computer will not boot except in safe mode or safe mode with networking.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Alright this is a family's laptop that is about 5 or even more years old...has windows xp on it dont know the exact one -.-...alright.

My sister has been using it and says she has never done anything to it...which i dont believe but anyways this computer will not boot up what so ever...everytime you power it on it goes to the screen that says unexpected error software/hardware problem yada yada yada...and then it gives you the options of boot in safe mode, safe mode networking, safe mode command prompt, last known good configuration...and none of those will work...we do have the recovery disks to wipe it but are trying to find a better way if possible...and when you try to load into any of the safe mode choices it stops at multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\Mup.sys...will stay at that for about 5-10 mins and then just turn off...if you try to just do normal mode or last known configuration it just acts like it loads with the windows and the little green loading bar then shuts off...the more i type the more i think the harddrive is toast but im new and learning so i probably could be wrong. Just looking for suggestions =)

Oh and this pc will run very hot...so if its a hardware issue i would not be surprised.

Hello, I'm hoping someone would be able to help me resolve this so that I can avoid having to reinstall Windows. Here's the situation: my laptop suddenly cannot boot up anymore; it usually hangs when the "Please wait..." dialog shows up with the text "Windows is starting up...", but sometimes it goes as far as the login prompt, then hangs after I enter my credentials and press Enter. When it hangs I cannot even move my mouse cursor. I can only think of two things I did out of the ordinary that created this mess:
I installed the driver for the Turtle Beach AudioAdvantage Micro USB stick audio card before my PC started hanging. However, after I installed the driver I was forced to reboot, and my computer rebooted just fine.
I closed my laptop's lid to put it in sleep mode while MyDefrag (formerly JkDefrag) was running. I have done this in the past without any issues, but this time when I exited sleep mode my computer was hanging, so I forced a reboot. This trouble started after I rebooted.

I am able to boot up in Safe Mode, but not Safe Mode with Networking, which leads me to think that maybe some network related drivers got corrupted. Some more info on my setup:
I have Windows XP Pro SP3 installed (v5.1.2600)
I have Avira AntiVir and Comodo Firewall installed
I am not using Hibernation
Audio: SigmaTel STAC9751
Graphics: Intel 945 GMS

Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...
Good Evening,I could do with some pointers on resolving an issue. I can only boot into windows in safe mode in Windows 10. Normal mode and safe mode with networking doesn't work. The problem occurred after a windows update. I have removed the latest updates that were installed and cleared any pending ones but it still won't boot properly. I have also run the troubleshooter and tried to recovery to an earlier date which also doesn't work. The laptop is a HP ENVY 17 notebook. At boot it just gets to the HP logo with the circular loading icon and no further and can only boot it into safe mode. Can anyone recommend the next steps? I have also tried the following;stopping startup items
uninstalling hardware drivers
removing recent software
running troubleshooters at boot
sfc scan
diagnostic/selective startups with minimal services running
Would the fact that I cant boot into Safe Mode with Networking imply its a network driver related issue?Bit of a dead end really, any help would be much appreciatedKind regardsTrevor

A:Can't boot into Normal/Safe Mode with Networking, only safe mode...

It's uncertain what the problem is - although a networking problem does sound likely.
Start with trying a clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot:  http://www.thewindowsclub.com/what-is-clean-boot-state-in-windows
If that stops the problem, then re-enable things a few at a time until you figure out what's causing it.
Then uninstall the problem program (from Start...Settings...Apps...Apps & Features - if you don't find it there, check the right sidebar for Programs and Features and see if you can remove it from there).

Let us know what happens there and we'll move on from there if needed.

After attempting to start my Laptop in Safe Mode, it loaded drivers normally only to crash a few seconds later. A prompt message appears but is impossible to read because Windows immediately reboots upon showing the prompt.

Safe Mode with Networking loads normally.

Any ideas or advice?

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

My system (XP Professional SP3) won't boot up in Safe Mode + Networking. When I select it and then hit Return it seems to do it at first but then takes me back to the initial screen (with the Mode choices) with the comment that the system had not started correctly?!

Background:

Several weeks ago my Webroot Antivirus began to play up by taking ages to scan. The longest I had it running was 14 hours! and it still hadn't finished. It did detect a virus (unfortunately, I was not clever enough to note down which one) and allegedly removed it but the problem remained. Webroot support advised me to run an update and scan in Safe Mode + Networking. But then .... see above.

I have since cross-checked with avast antivirus, which cannot find anything.

So the first step would be to solve the Safe Mode problem, I guess. Just for your information, I ran a scan with your advertiser's programme PC Fix. It detected apparently loads of registry errors (I am normally using CCleaner, which cannot find anything = damaged too?) but before I fork out more money I wanted to hear your opinion and perhaps the odd suggestion I could try first.

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? In other words you can't boot normally?

Please help me with this issue with my computer. I got home from school today and tried to use my dell desktop, and it seems to work fine for about 60 seconds and then it just freezes, like caps lock light wont toggle and requires a hard shutdown kind of freeze. It appears to work fine in safe mode. I tried to fix it myself by disabling all the non-Microsoft drivers, but it still freezes in normal mode. The only part in the system that isn't stock is a nvidia graphics card, but it has worked fine for a few months, plus I disabled the nvidia driver in msconfig along with everything else non-Microsoft to no avail. This seems to have come out of nowhere, because it worked fine this morning. I left it on during the day though. Please help me, I've done all I know how to do.

Edit: Forgot to mention one last thing. The Norton 360 subscription ran out today, so I tried to uninstall it, but the computer would always freeze before I could run something for that long. Safe mode doesn't allow uninstalling either.

Once we have the freezing issue resolved you can then uninstall Norton using there uninstaller. Norton Uninstaller

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I am running using Dell Inspiron with windows vista. A couple days ago, I got on the computer and then it froze, at fist the program I was using froze, and then I got a circle next to the arrow, but could still move the arrow, then the arrow stops moving. CTL ALT DEL does not work, so i must do a hard reboot, try to boot in safe mode and all the files come up but then it goes no where and the computer either restarts or I reboot it.

I have run all types of tests and nothing comes up. Today I got the blue screen of death twice, but after reboot, it goes away. I do not have a Boot Disk and have tried all the tests in the F8 command. Currently I am running an expanded memory test, but figured I would get this out there before I go insane.

Any ideas would be MUCH appreciated.

hello,
I am having problems with xp . After a failed linux mint install my current xp install went down under. I get to the loading screen and after some time it freezes. I tried safe mode and it works. I tried safe mode with networking and it freezes after showing that mup.sys is loading . I tried in safe mode to set up a diagnostic startup . One restart later it still freezes, which is odd since I thought that diagnostic startup is basically safe mode. I have two hdd so I took out the hdd with the xp install and I intalled xp sp3 on the hdd with the failed mint install on it. Everything ran fine (and slow) and after a restart I got the same problem on this new xp installation. It only works in safe mode without networking. The lan card can't be the problem since the internet works if I boot from a puppy linux or even mint linux cd. But just to be safe I tried booting xp without the lan card. Same problem, xp freezes at loading screen.
Maybe the attached report about what is scheduled to be loade/run may be useful. To view it you need http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx
Is there any way to trace the boot process so i may see where exactly xp freezes? boot logging I understand will not work . There are some entries in the log file but I think only the sessions where I booted into safe mode are in that log. I will attach that file too (it's too long to post) .

Thanks

Windows just downloaded an update to my ASUS x83V laptop and now I can't get it to boot up. I've tried booting in normal mode, last successful mode, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt and nothing works.

If trying to boot in safe mode it gets stuck on crcdisk.sys. When trying to boot in any mode it eventually hits the blue screen with a STOP error of 0x0000001E. I have also gotten 0x0000007E and 0x00000024.

I am positive it's the latest Windows Update that caused this because my computer at work, which also runs on Vista and is also an ASUS, had an update yesterday. When I came into work this morning and tried to start up it was unable to and did a start up repair. That didn't work but it gave me a system restore option which did work.

Unfortunately my ASUS laptop does not prompt me to do a repair nor a system restore. The recovery disk I have that came with the laptop only allows me to do a restore which erases everything on my HD.

I'm only somewhat computer savvy; better at working with them than fixing them so please try to put things in layman's terms. Thank you!

Hello,

I seem to be having quite the problem on a computer of mine. After recently installing the directx sdk I am unable to logon through normal or safe mode. When I try to boot up normally, I log in but then the monitors go black but everything else seems to run. Pressing ctrl alt delete works and brings up the screen again but if I try to select task manager for example the screen goes black again. When I boot up through safe mode the computer restarts seconds after loading the windows logon screen. Any ideas on how to get into the computer. I'm pretty sure that uninstalling directx can solve my issues but I just can't get in.

Thanks

A:Computer can't boot through safe mode or normal mode

Hello rtsrangel and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you created a System Repair Disc you can use it to boot your computer. Then you can access various System Recovery Options such as system restore. You could then restore your computer to an earlier date/time prior to when you installed the directx sdk.

System Repair Disc - Create

Or perhaps your computer manufacturer created a hidden recovery partition. You can usually access this partition by turning on your computer and immediately clicking the F8 key (top of keyboard.) Keep clicking until you see the Advanced Boot Options screen. From here you should be able to select Repair Your Computer.

System Recovery Options

Please post back if any of this helps or not.

Hello, i recently installed windows 10 and before that i was using windows 7.
During this time i already had gotten crashes regarding my video driver. These kinda stopped over time, but still return once in a while.

So today in windows 10 my PC crashed twice, once was a freeze, second one was a Kernel security check failure.

In a response to this i used driver verifier, made it check all installed drivers and rebooted the machine. This pretty much broke it. I now cant boot up except on Safe Mode, there isnt a recovery point, windows cant detect the error and i cant seem to install windows SDK debugging tools because windows installer wont run in Safe mode.

I am pretty much with a broken computer at this moment, only bootable in safe mode. This is the computer i used to post this. The computer is in dutch so that might be a problem, sorry about that.

I attached the file.IMRE-PC-wo_23-03-2016_101528,96.zip

Hello SJ and welcome to 10forums!

I looked through the dump files, one of them was caused by Neo_0093.sys which seems to be a driver for SoftEther VPN.

Do you by any chance use it?

The other dump file didn't point to anything specific and it took forever to debug it in WinDbg.

My neighbor has a major problem with the Virus Protector Malware, the only way I can do anything is by booting into safe mode with command prompt, so I can't update Malwarebytes in safe mode with networking, virus protector is the only thing that will run in any other mode. Do you think I could install an updated version of Malware bytes on a RW DVD and run the updated version of malware bytes that way? I was able to run RKill and the Malwarebytes install program from a DVD in command Prompt mode, so I thought I might be able to remove it this way. Thanks for any helpEdit: Moved topic from XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Hi,
I try to help people with internet connectivity issues. Lately, this has been bothering me a lot. You get into safe mode with networking (f8 at startup) and everything works fine. The connectivity is fine. Some people have slow browsing issues, they are sorted out in safe mode with networking. For some, the computer freezes up while browsing in normal mode, but works perfectly in safe mode with networking.

The next valid step in troubleshooting would be to perform a clean boot (How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state) i.e. disable all of the startup items and services.
But, I've notices, quite a few times, this does not work. People have performed scans and found no viruses (so this means that we cannot attribute the cause to spyware).

My question is : Is there something we can do if a clean boot does not work?

Thanks in advance, must say that the people out here are very helpful and do not hesitate in sharing their knowledge with others

Hi and welcome

If safe boot with network works then connectivity as you said is not the problem. The problem is different with each different machine. I assume you are talking about more than one.
An obvious choice would be to type event viewer in search. go to the windows logs>application tab. Look for errors (red in the left column) that contain app hang, app crash, etc. When you find them not the event ID and source ... Read more

I have a dual boot linux/xp system.
I was looking at partitions - just listing them - in linux, and now win xp won't come up in normal mode. It will come up in safe mode, however.

Can you help me get my "normal mode" back?

When the horizontal moving bar comes up in normal mode, it just goes on forever. I see the disk light go on for about 8 cycles of the bar. It usually runs 11 cycles before giving me the user selection screen. Now the disk light goes out after cycle 8, and the bar keeps going. I waited 32 cycles before giving up.

I also recently tried to install a Dell XP reinstallation CD I had onto a new partition. I have Partition Commander, which I only run against Windows partitions. The program correctly identified an empty partition and said it had hidden all other partitions. This may or may not have anything to do with my current problem. It did happen in the time frame of the problem appearing. The CD was not able to install XP. It said something about analyzing my system. I left it to do that as I went out for the evening, and when I returned 3 hours later, it was still in that state, so I killed it.

A:Solved: win xp can boot safe mode, not normal mode

I had done a full back up using Acronis backup software (a new product for me) 3 weeks ago. When I exhausted what meager options I could think of, I rebooted with the bootable Acronis CD and restored that backup. Acronis won my 4 vendor test (others were Norton Ghost, Argentum, NovaStor NovaBackup) for best backup product. It is capable of taking a backup of any partition (linux or windows). I have now tested the restore to all of C. It first deletes the C: partition, then recreates it and copies the image there to. Worked like a charm. Access to XP has been fully restored. Backup took 1 hour, restore took 37 minutes. I'm now a believer.

Hello and Thank You in advance for taking the time to help me,

Computer takes longer than normal to boot but the real problem occurs when I attempt to go to a website. I will wait to see if the web page will load but it doesn't. When I click the close (X) button it will turn the screen to a haze of white and say that the program is not responding. Then when I click the close (X) button again the web page appears loaded for a split second and then closes.  I have tried to open process manager by right clicking in the task bar and then clicking the process manager option and it never loads. I have also tried the Ctrl + Alt + Delete way of accessing process manager but it doesn't load either, except for 1 time but I had already clicked restart on the computer.  I am a very patient person so when I say, " I will wait " it means I waited for a half hour.

The only way I was able to even get here to post this is because I am in Safe Mode with Networking. I looked at the msconfig and there are things I don't recognize but at this point my mind is so frazzled with different programs and files that I am unsure what I should keep and what I should get rid of.

XP pro version 2002 and is a 32 bit system.  There is no mfg. name to the computer it is a home built  computer from parts of other computers and items from Tiger Direct, and was built for me 5 yrs. ago by a friend who said he knew very well the ins and outs of building a computer for me....it worked for about 8 months  then issues started  ....the smoke cleared and it has been proved not to be true, I have long ago stopped conversing with and going to him for computer help. he can never cure this boot up problem it has.
I have a few docs. and family images that were yet to be saved / backed up, so a complete reinstall is a possibility.  see **** below

The problem:  The computer will not boot normally, I have had this issue since Nov. 2013 . I have been  reading the web for solutions since Nov. 2013  and trying this and that  and have made no head way.  Tomorrow I will attempt to use  GETxPUD on a DVD and boot with that, and see how far I get.  I am using my son's computer right now, to type this.

**** Trouble began before I could use my external drive and make a back up.  So there is no back up to resort to.   when it does make boot progress it some times will get to the screen where the words XP and the colored four window paned window is,with the bar graph below,  and that stays on the screen for approx.  30 secs give or take and then the screen goes black.  The red HD ... A:Help... my computer will not boot into safe mode or any mode...

A system that does not boot at all...or complete booting into the O/S...well, my first suspects would be hardware items.  Guilty until proven innocent via testing or substitution of parts into another known good working system...that's the approach I would take.

If it were me...I'd take it to a local computer shop and pay the $$ to have someone check it out and tell me what might the problems be (never assume there is only one problem).

In today's world...it's hard to not know someone who is capable of doing the same thing for free.  The problem with that is...most users with system problems have no idea how mistaken their estimates of a person's capabilities might be...if the knowledgebase was there, there would be no need to consult someone else:).

I'd be comfortable with the opinion of someone who actually has credentials that attest to her/his ability to properly diagnose and honestly depict the actual problems with a system.

That said...any onscreeen error messages that may have provided clues that something was amiss...before Nov 2013?

Louis

Looking back at previous topics by you...it seems that you have been having issues with this system for about 8 months, including initiating a malware topic that was not responded to.  Same system?

Hello,
I have this problem with my laptop - sometimes I cannot login - after choosing the user the screen freezes or after logging in it works only for a few minutes in regular mode (I can do things over those minutes like open firefox, but I cannot open folders, sometimes I can open the task manager or even some programs) but then it freezes and I have to shutdown the computer manually by pushing the power button. When I tried pushing crtl+alt+del I got a message "The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when ctrl+alt+delete was pressed. If the operatin system does not respond, press esc or restart the computer by using the power switch". I don't know if this helps, but I try to add as much as I can. Sorry it it's not relevant - my knowledge about computers and IT is minimal.
The computer runs fine in safe mode.
So I tried system restore to a week before when the computer was still fine and it didn't work. So I reinstalled a graphics driver (Intel HD Graphics Driver) as I found on the internet that similar problems got fixed by reinstalled videocard drivers. And it worked, everything started to run smoothly again in the regular mode. As normally I allowed windows updates and after restarting my computer, the problems came back.
I assumed that the problem was the updates so I uninstalled most of them (KB2930275; KB2923961; KB2925418; KB2929755; KB2929733 and KB2918077) but the problem was still there and I was unable to unin... Read more

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum and really hoping you can help me :)

My internet has not been working on my laptop, which happened very suddenly 2-3 days ago. The connection is fine on my other computer and phone, so I know its not the internet itself. Even on the laptop, it SAYS the wifi is connected, but its not working. Firefox was instantly crashing, it wouldn't even bring up the browser window. Chrome gives me a "DNS address not found" error for every site I try and IE wont load anything.

I've tried flushing my DNS, using that ipconfig /refresh and /renew thing. I've tried troubleshooting the wifi connection, disabling/enabling it. I ran a Malware Bytes scan and only found a couple of "pup" programs/cookies that have been deleted. Currently running a SuperAntiSpyware scan.

The thing is, I tried using the internet in Safe Mode with Networking and it works just fine! So that means a program or something on my computer is causing it, right? There were issues with my Teredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface driver the other day, it had a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark, but I did a couple of fixes that I found on help sites and that exclamation is gone now.

Please help, I really want to use my laptop on the internet again ;_;

Oh, and the specs for my comp are:
Lenovo Win7 PC

RAM: 6 GB
Windows 7 - 64 bit operating system

Hi ,

I'm using windows7 32-bit operating system. I have internet explorer 8( it never worked since installation, always shows "No network connection") and Google chrome installed in my computer. I had been using Google chrome which crashed yesterday. I re-installed Chrome and now it says there is no internet connection. In short, I cannot use internet in my computer. Any other browser installed comes up showing the same "No Network connectivity" thing. And then I started the computer in "safe mode with networking" and I could use see that both Google chrome and Internet explorer are working. But they do not work in normal mode. I really don't know what to do to solve this problem. And internet is working as I'm using internet in my mobile using WIFI from the same internet connection.

Thanks you,

I now have an additional problem--Diagnostics Policy Service will not run when I click on "Diagnose & Repair." It is set to "Automatic" in the Services window, but when I click on "Diagnose & Repair," I get the msg that I have to start it manually. When I do, it starts and then stops with the msg that it will not run b/c there is no demand for its service. I assume that one of the netsh resets I executed messed up something in the registry so that my request does not interact properly with Diagnostics Policy Service anymore.

For background, the first time I had any problem (last week), I was able to restore network function by rebooting, maybe twice. But that no longer works. Hope you have some answers.

I just discovered that networking works in Safe Mode including the Internet. (Computer is able to get normal IP address, mask, gateway, etc from router.) But I still have the same problem in normal mode.

I am working on a computer now that is failing to get online in normal mode. It can get online in safe mode.

I have run and updated adware, ran hijack this, ran Spybot SD, and ran Stinger. Mutliple times for all and now everything checks out like it should. I also deleted several folders that were spy/ad ware. Everything is functioning as it should.

I have also run the msconfig in normal mode to eliminate unnecessary startup items in normal mode and between the normal and safe mode w/ networking, all the processes match up. I have gotten it down to 17 processes in normal mode. Was originally at 75+. Both are now the same in safe mode w/ networking as well as normal mode, 16 running processes.

I have run ipconfig and pulled a valid network address. I have also done a /release and /renew, gotten the same IP, and cannot get online in normal mode.

TCP/IP settings in IE is correct. I have also gone under the Advanced section of IE tools and restored default. No go. I have also deleted the 1394 connection, restarted and it was auto-added to the computer and is functioning properly. Same for the network adapter.

Can anyone give me some ideas on what else I could check to try and get online? I have also downloaded and installed Firefox with no positive results.

Everything within the Device Manager is functioning properly. The system is XP Home SP1. I am thinking about upgrading to SP2, but really dont want to do that as I doubt it will help.

Also, I have run the WinSock XP fix... Read more

Hello all,

I am having trouble with my fiance's laptop computer with Windows XP Home SP2. I am not able to establish a connection to the internet so I cannot run any of the online scanning tools, however I scanned and cleaned the computer in safe mode with Spybot S&D which was installed on the computer. I tried to download and install via jump drive AVG Free 8 and a current version of SpybotS&D. Unfortunately the installations failed due to the lack of internet connection. I ran Hijackthis and saved this log:

Hello skate2him and welcome,

While I see the many infections present on the system, I'd prefer to see a more comprehensive set of logs before I begin.

As noted in the final step (Step 5) of our sticky topic IMPORTANT - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help....

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to usb stick and transfer it to the Desktop of the infected computer.

What DSS will do:create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review.
DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt in your next reply.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and

Hi,

My OS is Vista.I am finding problem in accessing net.My net works fine in safe mode with networking and not in normal mode. Please can anyone help me?Do i need to turn ON any service?

Thanks in advance.

A:Net is working with safe mode with networking but not in normal mode..why?

Hi, it could be that something is stopping or preventing your internet connection. You see when your pc boots in normal mode it loads everything and I mean everything. Whereas in safemode + networking it only loads the process and services needed to work or use the machine.

The first thing I would like you to do is go to device manager, hold windows key and press R
then type devmgmt.msc now a window will be displayed and click continue, then expand network adapters, write down what you have installed in your machine and try downloading the latest version.

The other thing you can do is go to msconfig, by holding the windows key located in between ctrl and alt, and press r on the keyboard. Then type msconfig, then go to startup and uncheck everything, click apply and restart. Now if you Internet works it means that there is something loading which is not good or is causing a conflict.

We also want to cancel out Malware so make sure your pc had anantivirus and antispyware and you scan your pc full. Also go to microsoft update and make sure you have the latest updates.

Thanks
