X1 Carbon (2015) 3rd Gen (20BS0035US) - Any way to use HDMI output while still connected to dock?

Q: X1 Carbon (2015) 3rd Gen (20BS0035US) - Any way to use HDMI output while still connected to dock?

Simple question: is there any way at all to have a 3rd generation X1 Carbon docked (OneLink) and still output through the built-in HDMI port on the laptop? The built-in mini-DisplayPort video out still works when the device is docked, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get HDMI output when device is docked, even when all other displays are disabled. Using latest Windows 10 64-bit.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

According to this thread it will not work as lot of users has also tried that configurations so sadly there is no workaround.

I hope the above information helped you.

Hi,

So eagerly i tought to buy this cool looking laptop for a huge $2000 i needed it to output to a hdmi monitor ot TV so sometimes i could see movies as well, now i had to buy the special DA200 dell adaptor and in the past 3 weeks it`s been a complete nightmare, i WAS NEVER ABLE to make it work permanently. The chat support was no help at all usually simply resuming to try and replace the part but i do think the part is good and i didn't feel like waiting 2 weeks for it to ship from china.

The ethernet and usb work on the DA200 adaptor , EXCEPT HDMI.  SOMETIMES it would work briefly until next restart, i had tried everything ever available on the internet. The laptop is running Windows 10 (as it`s restricted to that version, i tried to install other versions with lots of issues and compatibility issues) so  i have installed reinstalled and installed different versions of the video driver for all possible windowses and none worked. what did work was very brief until next restart and that usually happened when i had a fresh windows install, after the first restart i will get a non working hdmi again.

I have tried several hdmi cables so i know it`s not the hdmi cable or the tv ot the monitor. and nobody seems to be able to help!!

Oops I see my first post got sent, even if the website failed...
Anyay.. I talked to Dell Support and they told me to update the firmware for:
Intel (R) Thunderbolt 3 Firmware Update
(version 02.05.04,A00)
downloaded forn Dell.com/support
Enter your service tag and you will find it under Chipset on the driver download page.
That fixed it for me!
It was a known issue for the guy i talked to.

The problem at hand is well described by another user: http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=181294 The problem was mentioned here, some three weeks ago: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/tp02_en/message-id/74532#M74532 As of February 20, 2017, the problem still persists. Not just with one single installation, but at two different locations using different OneLink+ docking units. Problem applies to a brand-new (Jan 2017) ThinkPad X1 Carbon (type 20FB) hooked up to a OneLink+ Dock (part # 40A40090EU). Running Win10 Pro/64. I've got two OneLink+ units, both yield the same result. The laptop will boot just fine when it is not connected to the dock, but when docked, it will not boot past the screen which says "press enter to access BIOS (...)" when the network cable is plugged into the docking station.  It boots just fine when the network cable is not plugged into the rear of the docking station. There's nothing special with the network or cable (works well with a myriad of other laptops) and the ThinkPad in question has the latest & greatest drivers installed. If a docked boot has already taken place, plugging the ethernet cable into the dock works just fine.  In essence, the problem exists only when the ethernet cable is plugged in during boot.  Can someone from Lenovo please get in touch? Excuse my English please as it's my second language...I have a 1440p 144hz monitor, I can not choose 1440p as an display option when connecting X1 to it via HDMI, I can only get 1080p in windows settings. In Intel HD Graphics Control Panel however, I can set custom resolution up to 2560*1440 @30hz, anything higher than that won't work, it says "The custom resolution exceeds the maximum badwidth capacity".I couldn't find the specification of the HDMI port on X1 carbon, but some people in the community say it's HDMI1.4 and they can get [email protected]? Then it should be able to handle [email protected] right? Also my cable shouldn't be the problem, since my other laptop can output 1440p @60hz just fine. Is anyone having the same problem?

GA-890GPA-UD3H (rev. 3.1)

GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket AM3+ - GA-890GPA-UD3H (rev. 3.1)

(Note 3) Simultaneous output for DVI-D and HDMI is not supported.

What I'm trying to do is output just my sound to the receiver via HDMI cable, but still use the DVI to my monitor for video. From the note above taken from the MB specs, sounds like this is not possible.

This is new business to me and wondering how others do this, seems little information I can find. I am ordering a HDMI to DVI cable so I can disconnect the DVI cable from the computer and instead run both video and sound through HDMI to the receiver, then the video to the monitor. Hoping this works.

If all fails then I am relegated to separate digital through S/PDIF optical link, to my receiver. According to the experts this is less than ideal since now, the multi-channel dolby and DTS signals can only be received via HDMI.

Wondering if I get a Blu-ray player for my computer how this is going to all work out. Hoping that HDMI to DVI cable does the trick.

Anyone with experience with this kind of set-up and the aforementioned hardware greatly appreciated.

And Happy NEW YEAR!

A:Gigabyte HDMI output to Yamaha receiver - no sound output

As you have a separate video card, its capabilities should determine how the video works, not the motherboard. The video is routed to the video card.

If you had some type of integrated Video on the motherboard then the motherboard's specs would apply. For example, I have an Intel i7 3770 CPU and this model has built in Intel HD4000 video which is routed to motherboard video connectors and thus the motherboard would determine how the video is distributed. However, I'm using a separate video card and thus that determines how video is distributed.

Hello everyone, As proposed by my products update scan, I downloaded and installed the current Intel HD5500 graphic card driver. But it cannot be configured via the Intel graphic card control panel . The control panel doesn't show up (But its executable exists under C:\WINDOWS\system32\GfxUIEx.exe). I cannot run it from the start menu and it is missing from the context menu on the desktop. I tried reinstalling the driver, but couldn't get it to work. So, my question is: where can I get the old graphic card drivers for my laptop, since they don't show up on the download page anymore? Cheers,Patrick

I manually put the system to sleep via the Start menu (or whatever it's called now).  Usually, when I come back and hit the power button, it resumes just fine.  But it seems that every now and then, it gets totally stuck.  The green light on the power button is blinking slowly, but the machine won't respond at all.  I press the power button, press the enter button, do everything I can think of, but it stays off.  This happens on battery and on AC.  It's not easily reproducible; it's done it maybe two or three times in the past week that I've had it.  I'm looking for some pattern but haven't found it.   The only resolution I've found is to hold down the power button until I get full power off.  Then I can boot from scratch, losing anything I had open at the time of the sleep.  Any ideas?

I've had this too...seems to me to be a Windows 8.1 issue.  Frustrating, especially coming from a MacBook Air which is pretty flawless in the reliability, dependability and battery life department.

Hello all,  Looking for some advice on properly setting up power managment on my new X1Carbon 3rd Gen, touch screen, i7, 8GB ram.  Running Windows 8.1.  I have used the default Lenovo powerplan but reduced brightness to 50%.   I noticed today and yesterday while traveling that I was not getting the 5-8 hours I have heard people mention.  Yesterday though I was watching some video in the VLC app and found I was down to 30% after approximately 2 hours.  In total may have gotten 3 hours battery.   Today I worked on my laptop on two train rides back to back total 2.5 hours and was down to 28% battery.  I suspect that I might have some settings not optimized so any feedback would be appreciated.  This is a fresh install so no bloatware and all Lenovo drivers are up to date.   Any feedback would be appreciated or areas I should look at to fix this.

A:X1 Carbon 2015 (Gen3) Battery life

I am probably in the 'real world' 5-6 hour range with my Gen. 3 X1 (sometimes I can stretch to 6.5-7 hours if I watch power usage very carefully and run Task Manager to shut down battery hogging processes).  Big dissapointment in the battery life department, for sure.  I think part of this is Windows 8.1 which tends to run processes that chew up battery (unlike Apple laptops which are way more optimized to sip power). I originally ran on "Balanced"  mode but I'm getting really bad browser (mostly Chrome) lag on battery so I switched to "Lenovo Power Optimized" which really hasn't helped the lag that much but the machine seems a bit more responsive.  I have Battery Bar Pro to monitor my instant power usage and found that the X1 uses far less power on battery when browsing using Internet Explorer touch (on the Metro side) but that requires you to choose IE11 as your default browser which is not optimal since the touch version of IE11 is so limited (no extensions) that it makes browsing difficult (at least for me).  I am praying that Spartan solves these problems.   So, bottom line is that the X1 is definitley not getting anywhere near its advertised battery life of 10.4 hours.  I'm sure you could get that if you had the screen all the way down and used the X1 in a very limited fashion but nobody works like that.  Lenovo should be more like Apple and give real world battery life estimates (yes, the MacBook Air real... The specifications of both devices are saying that they are capable of showing a resolution of 3840x2160 at 60hz. Nevertheless, its not working. The 2840m is the only device which is in use After all these steps, I'm still only getting 30hz.  This are the urls to the device-support pages:X1 Carbon Support PageThinkVision Support Page I have no ideas what to try next, but working 8-10hrs a day with 30hz hurts my eyes. Laptop alone works like a charm, but when I connect the laptop to oneLink I can't get an image on my second exterior display via dvi nor via vga. The computer finds the screen and name etc, but when I want double or extend or only screen 2 projection nothing happens on the external screen. It keeps saying no input. I have tried to reinstall dock driver, change resolution, updated even bios, still nothing happens. 2. This problem is even more disturbing. If my computer is turned off or restarted while connected to OneLink dock pro, it won't start and freezes at lenovo logo. If I pust laptop to sleep while conected it boots normaly, if i turn it off not connected, then connect it and start it also boots normaly. But when it is shut down while conected it doesn't. Not even if i turn it off while connected, unplug it and turn it on. I have to do reset in this case. Guys I really need help, since those issues make my dock almost completly useless.HELP! Tilen_T

Both my Desktop and Laptop have HDMI input. I also have the HDMI cord on hand right now I just don't know how I'd go about setting it up. I'd like to use synergy to control the desktop AND have it's output be on the laptop until my power supply arrives and I can fix my TV.

Earlier this year, I experienced a serious display flickering issue and the eventual full-blown display failure on my X1 Carbon (2015 20BS). The keyboard bezel around the display hinge (specifically the left one when you face the screen), is extremely sensitive to any amount of finger pressure. On top of that, the bottom of the laptop close to the hinge is just as sensitive to touch as well.  These sensitive areas can cause the display to stop working intermintently (off and on). Eventually, after about a week or so, the display would stop working all together. Since my X1 Carbon was just out of warranty, I had to send it to IBM for repair. The cost is $700, not including shipping and state + city taxes (about $50 worth). Initially I thought, maybe it was stress from carrying it around daily inside a laptop carrying case (I mean, X1 Carbon being a ultrabook..super portable right?). So now, after the repair, I actually treat this X1 Carbon way better than I do with my Apple Macbook Pro. In fact, the X1 Carbon is on house arrest, permanently sitting on my office desk. Fast forward a couple months since the repair, out of blue today, I decided to lower the audio volume, and I suddenly noticed a screen flicker. "Oh c*ap!" thought in my head.  Lo and behold, yep, the hinge trouble is back again without me ever putting any unsual stress on this ultrabook!. I am at a loss on what to do. At this point, if I spend anohter $700 on this repair, I might... Read more

So i decided to upgrade it.i bought a Plextor PX-G256M6e and clone the old 120GB SSD to the Plextor one on my desktop PC.Once I install the new ssd into my X1 Carbon Gen3 2015, everytime when i boot it up, there will be a message said "error 2103, ssd detection fail" something like that, and tell me to press the ESC key to continue. After I press it, It will boot up just like normal and i can use this laptop as usual. Everything works fine except when it boot up. In fact, I'm now typing this on the X1 carbon. If i re-install the old 120gb ssd again, that error screen won't appear. Can anyone help me to solve this error? I've searched and find different solutions to solve this annoying error, but no one works, not even ONE. There are some post in this forum too, and they don't work on my laptop as well... Thx a lot Matthew

Hi all,
I have a 3rd gen x1 carbon, about a month old.  I am not sure whether it has always done this or not, but when the computer goes to sleep mode with my external bose speakers plugged in, they buzz.  It's the same buzz that comes from the speakers when, for example, I touch the cable contact with my hand or against a piece of metal, but this is the first time a computer has ever done this when it is in sleep mode- the very same speakers did not have the problem on another computer.  And obviously the sound stops when the computer boots up, and no buzzing at any other time.

It's a minor annoyance- I walk away for twenty minutes and realize it's buzzing like crazy and unplug the speakers- but I'd rather there were a fix of some kind.  Does anyone know of one?

For some strange reason, the trackpad gestures to scroll or whatever is no longer working. I use to be able to scroll down a webstite using the 2 finger dragging down gestures. Is there a fix for this?  I think it stopped working after I ran some Windows 10 update the other day.

Nevermind, there were some updates in the Lenovo Solution Center hidden in the other tabs I didn't see that fixed it.Very nice software. Didn't have to look too hard for the drivers.

Sometimes when I connect the Onelink connector from the Onelink+ dock, the ethernet port is not detected.  The monitor shows up and usb ports function but there is no local area connection listed in the netword adapters.  If I disconnect the Onelink connector from the X1 and reconnect it, then suddenly the local area connection shows up and is there until the next time I redock the Onelink+.   Is this a known bug?  Anyone else having this problem? This is on Windows 7 x64 with all the latest drivers installed from the Lenovo website.

Hello - I have a X1 Carbon with the ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock.  Everything worked great under Windows 8.1.  I would occassionally have an issue with the dock not coming online after resuming Win 8.1, but it was easy to fix by powering the dock on/off or rebooting. However since upgrading to Win 10, I have a very frustrating audio issue.  Application seem to have trouble picking between the sound device inside the laptop and the dock.  For example, I'll get an incoming call from Skype, and it will start the call on the laptop internal speakers, then say the "Realtek audio device is unavailable".  If I call the person back, it then completes the call and works fine through the dock audio device (which is what it should have done the first time). However the issue isn't only with Skype, it's with all apps.  For example, if I start Pandora in the Chrome browser, it will start playing the audio through the laptop speakers for about 1 second, then stop.  I then have to refresh the web page a few times to get it to start playing out of the dock sound device.  All the while, Windows is configured (and properly reports) the dock sound device as the default (which is what I want). I suspect this is an issue with the drivers for either the dock or the X1 not properly talking to Windows 10, but both are up to date, and either Lenovo or DisplayLink (who makes the dock drivers) have any noted issues with audio-switching. Has anyo... I'm trying to hook up my TV with my computer, and for the most part it's working. The video goes through and I get how to control it and everything. The only thing not working is the sound.

I'm using an HDMI to HDMI cable, and like I said the video is fine. Also, when the cable is plugged into my boyfriend's laptop, the sound comes out of the TV.

So this must mean the problem is with my computer specifically. Although, this computer is only a month old, so I wouldn't think anything is out of date.

I have no idea what's relevant, so I don't know what to post screenshots of, but I've read tons of other threads with the same issues but none of their solutions seem to work for me.

A:Realtek HDMI Output ATI HDMI Audio -Not Plugged In-

Info on your computer would help. We can only talk in generalites or suggestions without it. In most cases, if you have a full HDMI port with both audio and video, when you plug in an HDMI cable Windows changes the default audio playback device from the "Speakers" (your PC sound card) to "HDMI".

In your case the ATI (now called AMD) should be the device that is feeding the video and audio.

As your PC is only 1 month old, the PC vendor's tech support should be the ones to call since you haven't been able to find a solution to date.

Hi folks, It has been about 10-11 months since I bought my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. (2015), with 512GB SSD. It comes with ThinkPlus warranty, which says battery is also covered for 3 years.A month back, my battery started getting discharged very quickly when not on AC power. I checked the the Lenovo app, which says: "The battery is in poor condition"."The battery can only store 52.9% of its original full charge capacity". Its "Design Capacity" is 50.22Wh, but now its Full Charge capacity is about 26-27Wh! Cycle count is 288. I've never used any other AC adapter, except the original that came with it.Questions:1. Is it covered under warranty? This degradation is not normal and I believe there's a replacement I can do. 2. Warranty page for my serial number on Lenovo's site lists 3 warranties:i. 3 year limited warrantyii. 3 year ThinkPlus warranty and "The battery is also covered for 3 years". iii. "The battery included within this product is entitled to a 1 year on-site warranty. Please note that this may differ from the warranty of the base product itself." So, is my battery covered for 3 years OR 1 year?

Hi,I just got a X1 Carbon 20HR, and the ThinkPad USB-C Dock with it. The issue is, that when I use the dock and have it connected to my external monitor [Samsung LU28E85] then the mouse is lagging a bit - but enough to annoy me and make it harder to reach the right buttons.... This is both when I use a cabled mouse, as well as via Bluetooth or the Logitech connector. I would say thoug, that the cabled mouse seems to perform a little better than the wireless connections. When not in the dock and working on the screen of the laptop, there are no issues with any of the mice at all. There also seem to be a bit of lack with the keyboard entries...... Any advice?I was wondering if it can be the dock which is "underpowered" and should have been the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock instead? I have you can help Kind regardsLasse

Hello Everyone, I am new here so please go easy on me.I just bought and X1 Carbon 5th Gen laptop c/w Thunderbolt 3.0 docking station. The problem that I have is that the docking station won't recognise any of the external screens that are connected.I am using two Acer screens (one is connected using HDMI port on the dock and the other one uisng Display port).I have tried by connecting just one screen but nothing.I can see that Thunderbolt software is installed and its connected to my laptop. The laptop will charge through the docking station and also the wireless mouse and keyboard will work fine through the dock.Lenovo recommended that i should update my drivers. So I installed Lenovo Companion from Windows store. But it won't update my system. After clicking on System Update, I will get an error message saying "There is a problem in reteriving new updates for your system. Please try again later".Hence I downloaded all the drivers from support website and installed them manually but my docking station is still not working with the external monitors. The monitors works fine when connected directly to the laptop using the HDMI cable. Thanks in advance for your help.

We have a few Lenovo displays we are replacing and wanted to get some USB-C displays for our few MacBook Pro users, but also work with our OneLink Pro & Ultra Docks. Ultra Dock works great with DisplayPort & HDMI. The MacBook Pro's work great with USB-C and Apple's USB to ethernet gets us all set there. The issue is the X1 (gen 3) with OneLink Pro dock. When we setup the dock with DisplayPort it shows the display is connected in the Display Properties, along with resolution and extended desktop, but the display itself shows nothing and has an orange light. We tried 3 different docks and laptops, 2 different P24h displays, and 3 different DisplayPort cables. Confirmed both the display and dock support DisplayPort 1.2. Any idea on what I can do to get this going? So far this is the best display we could find that covers all our bases for our needs.

Hi Lenovo, My X1 have Winsows 10 (x64) with all latest drivers and BIOS update and with Onelink dock helper app in system tray ver:1.10.16. My issue is, that whenever i attach an USB device (even on the laptop itself) the dock disconnets and reconnects. Meaning, the network  flaps and audio too. The external display however remains turned on and does not glitch. I have attached a PC/SC smartcard reader on the dock thru USB and happens the same thing when the smartcard is removed from the reader and reinserted.Attached is the picture of the system notification that pops up. In windows logs there are no alerts too. Regards Aljosa
