Hello, I am considerng the T480, T480s, T580, P52S and CarbonX1 Gen 6. Any users of the above models use eGPU and Nvidia GPU under Ubuntu Linux? Does it work well? As for the dock, anybody use the Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 Plus? How is it compared with Thinkpad's dock?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had my X1C6 connected to a caldigit TS3 thunderbolt hub since August.  This morning when I turned the laptop on the hub was not found - looked to me like the hub was dead - no power to the Laptop and its internal indicator light didn't come on.  I was convinced the Caldigit hub was dead. So I plugged the Caldigit TS3 into the only other USB C host I own - a Lenovo Yoga 900.  The Yoga doesn't support Thunderbolt 3, BUT the hub woke up - its little indicator came on and I got a windows error about not not supporting a Thunderbolt device. I put the Caldigit TS3 back on the X1C6 and this time it came on - providing power to the laptop and its local indicator light was on.  However in Device manager all the hub devices had the yellow exclamation on them.  So I deleted all the erroring devices, rebooted and voila now the hub is working fine again...... What the Heck happened to me!?  Was it a microsoft issue, a lenovo issue or a caldigit problem!?  Times like this I really hate technology! If anyone can provide any insight or clues I'd appreciate it!

I have recently purchased a YOGA 920 and a HP Omen egpu enclosure. I am having problem connecting it to my laptop.

First, I tried both port, there's the sound of connect and disconnect, and nothing shows on the laptop, and the laptop is not charging.

I have tried with power cable connected, and now it was connected. The egpu still was not charging (no power delivery), and it only works one port 2 (port closer to touch pad) with charger connected to port 1. If I switch them, the laptop goes blue scree. I can remove the power after it is connected but then there is no power supply.

It is kind of similar to the issue as MrKnowNothing https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/YOGA-920-Thunderbolt-3-Port-No-devices-fou....

I have tried different drivers but all of them do not work. I have updated BIOS and Type-C firmware from Lenovo to the most recent version.

One more thing. Is it normal that thunderbolt controller is not showing up in device manager when nothing is connected?

I have tried it with my friend?s xps, it works perfectly, basically plug and play.

I think it is not supposed to work like this and the egpu should have power delivery to my laptop. Even if there is no power delivery, it should still connect without power adapter connected. Is this hardware problem or driver problem? Is there anyone else have similar problems?

Thanks!

Hi, I am planning to buy a HP notebook and want to run it as a Win10/Ubuntu dual boot. I would like to buy either the HP Spectre x360 13-4116na or HP ENVY x360 15-w101na.I have seen threads in this and other forums that a dual boot is possible and that there are some problems with the sound, but that there are solutions for these problems. But I have seen threads complaining about problems with graphic cards and especially some people saying that they deliberately chose NOT a QHD screens as if Ubuntu would not be able to deal with this higher resolution. Sounds unlikely to me, but could this pose a problem for Ubuntu with those two models I mentioned? Thanks for helping me to choose the right computer.ToruOkada

Hello, I would like to set the color profile for my Carbon X1 Type 20FC using Ubuntu Linux. I can choose amongst many different profiles there but I am not sure what the right one is. When I look it up at Lenovo Support to follow this explanation of ThinkWiki, it leas nowhere, the Lenovo Link is apparently dead. I also tried downloading 79oi32ww.exe and opened it with innoextract but this gave me a bunch of INF files and I don't know what to do with which actually. I have no idea how to start and how to adjust it, as its a great laptop but however the colours seem a bit weird yellowish and the dark shades drift away and don't work at all at the moment. Thanks for any help, Paul

I've recently been looking into buying an eGPU Enclosure such as the AKiTiO Node or the Razer Core. I've updated all the firmware and now I am running Thunderbolt Software Version 16.1.47.275. The Node and Core both specify that the computer needs to both have Thunderbolt 3 (which I have) and be compatible with external graphics. What does this mean? I have Thunderbolt 3, so wouldn't it be theoretically possible to run external graphics provided the firmware was up to date?
So in summary, my main question is this: Will/can the Dell XPS 13 9350 be able to use eGPU enclosures over Thunderbolt 3 now (or in the future if there is firmware updates being planned)?

Hello, I'll be getting the new Thinkpad P52 mobile workstation soon and wanted to know (as I couldn't find this anywhere and this model is really new) - will it support connection of external GPUs (egpu) through one of it's Thunderbolt 3 ports? If so, are there any significant performance or heating limitations relating to this sort of usage for example for high-end gaming or 3D modeling applications? (assuming I don't use the internal dedicated Quadro P2000 gpu for this), are there such limitations on the external GPU itself?  (type, compatability etc.) Thanks!

Folks - Just wanted to share the early results of my experiment with adding a Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosure to my T570 laptop. I just got this up and running, but everything operates mostly as expected so far. The only negative items so far are that my Ultradock does not have a Thunderbolt 3 port, so I must connect the TB3 cable directly to the laptop. Also, when cold booting with the laptop installed on the dock, the bitlocker password screen will not display on monitors attached to eGPU. The logon screen only displays on laptop screen (even when laptop is closed). My configuration is as follows: System specs Lenovo T570 Thinkpad LaptopIntel® Core? i5-7300U CPU @ 2.60GHz8.0 GB RAMIntel HD Graphics 620Machine Type Model: 20H9000PUSWindows 10 (64-bit) eGPU hardware Akitio Node EnclosureNvidia GTX 970 with 3 ea 1920 x 1080 monitors attached Installation stepsInstalled updatedThunderbolt drivers (16.3)Plugged in Akitio Node with GTX 970 installedInstalled Nvidia driversUpdated Akitio Node firmware Benchmarks Cinebench R15OpenGL with internal Intel HD Graphics 620 = 31.80 fpsCPU with internal graphics = 290 cbOpenGL with Akitio Node and GTX 970 eGPU = 98.4 fpsCPU with external graphics = 326 cb Now running 3 x 1920 by 1080 monitors on the GTX 970 plus the laptop display. I've had my x1 yoga 3rd gen for about a year now, and love it. I've been using a thunderbolt 3 eGPU dock (aorus 1070 gaming box) as a dock for about the same amount of time now, since it gives me the convenience power and portability. Other than the occasional visual glitches and restarts, I haven't had any issues when I unplug my laptop from the eGPU dock, or plugging it in. However, yesterday after I unplugged my laptop from the eGPU dock, my laptop kept making a "connected USB" and "disconnected USB" sound. It looked like my Thunderbolt 3 software app kept crashing and rebooting. I also noticed that none of my usb c/thunderbolt 3 ports were working; the laptop says it's charging with nothing plugged in, and when I tried plugging in a charger, it wouldn't charge. The only solution I found was to disable Thunderbolt 3 in the BIOS, but I'm not sure if this is a software issue, or if there's a part of my motherboard that's fried. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for troubleshooting?

Has anyone experienced this issue below? I disable my internal Quadro M1000M, I plug in my eGPU (AORUS 1070 Gaming Box) via Thunderbolt, use it for a while. Then when I'm done using it, I unplug it, re-enable my Quadro M1000M and plug in my external monitor via HDMI.   The display driver crashes for both my Quadro M1000M and my Intel HD Graphics 530 and the external monitor never works.  Microsoft starts a Microsoft Basic Display Driver. I tried disabling and re-enabling both display adapters but external monitor still won't work, it just crashes the adapters again. The only fix to this issue I have found is to uninstall the Quadro M1000M in the device manager and restart the computer. Then after it restarts, I can use the external monitor again with the Quadro M1000M. So it's easy to do and not a huge pain in the butt, but if anyone knows a way to fix this issue without needing to restart my computer, that would be a great help.

I knocked together an eGPU for my Thinkpad Yoga 370 today with an AKiTiO Node, a NVidia GTX 1050 and a thunderbolt 3 cable.it was all literally plug & play. Spent:  Node eGPU box $240, Refurb NVidia 1050 card, $135, spare thunderbolt cable, $25, upgraded RAM to 16GB DDR4, $160. Put it all together, plugged in T3 cable from PC to Node Box, HDMI from Node box to Lenovo 4K monitior.  Windows recognized new GPU and I loaded the drivers from NVidia.  Windows users the eGPU to drive the external monitor at 2560x1440, Intel integrated GPU drives the laptop panel at the same time.  Works as advertised, no issues.   I tested the setup by rendering video with Corel Video Studio Pro 2018 and the eGPU doesn't even breathe hard.  Ran DCS world (combat flight sim) on Steam (which wouldn't even load prior) and it works flawlessly on high graphics settings.  I'm a terrible pilot, but the visuals are pretty amazing. If you have any questions let me know but this was super easy. Pictures at this link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/kJP4LXCXcxwyXBAC2

To be honest, T480s would be even better, as according to tests, it's able to utilize CPU fully, thanks to good cooling system (make sure to get iGPU-only version though). And thanks to undervolting, you'll be able to elimimate throttling under prolonged load. You'll find more information in article below (both X1's were also tested): https://www.notebookcheck.net/A-performance-comparison-of-all-new-ThinkPad-notebooks.286486.0.html

I have recently purchased a 6th gen x1 carbon. It is the model with a 512gb ssd and 16gb of ram. I am planning a setup for my dorm room that definitely could use some work. There are a lot of peripherals going into this so bear with me. My main question through explaining this is if there is a way to streamline the setup and make it more cost efficient.  I am planning to major buys with this setup, the thinkpad ultradock and an Egpu. Regarding the Egpu, it will be a GTX 1070 mounted in a Razor Core V1. My question is I feel like having both the dock and core is unnecessary. I ideally would like to come into my room and put my X1 straight into the dock, which will be closed and probably upright next to the Egpu. Where I see the problem is that I could just as easily do the setup without the dock and instead plug the Egpu into the TB3 port every time I get home, and simply have the peripherals connected to the Egpu housing. One of the pieces that is making me question the setup is I also intend to have an external SSD that will stay in my room with the Egpu and will store my video games to save space on the internal drive for classes and regular programs. I have been told that the SSD and Egpu cannot share the same port as there would not be enough bandwidth to support the two for how I intend to use it, mostly gaming. So here are a couple questions I would like answered. 1. Should I even bother with the Ultra Dock if I am getting the EGPU2. What would be th... Read more

I have the 6th X1 Carbon. When connected to an eGPU, I think my CPU temps are too high. (85-91 C when playing games for short durations.)
I am thinking about buying a laptop cooler, but I'm not sure what would be better.
My two choices are:
1. the traditional cooling pad. These will have fans running on the bottom of the laptops
OR
2. laptop fan coolers such as Laptop Fan Cooler. These connect to the laptop's side vents, which the Thinkpad models, like my X1 Carbon has.
I wonder if anyone has tried either types of cooling and which one would probably have a better result in cooling down my laptop.
Thanks!

Recently, when the laptop sits connected to the dock at idle (no user interaction) after 4-5 minutes, CPU Utilization drops to a fixed 7% at 0.19 Ghz - you can see the CPU utilization graph go to flat line in the Task Manager. At this point, a user interaction will interrup this state, but it will take 15-45 seconds to get back to a usable UI. Mouse cursor moves fine, but interacting with any window is laggy/non-existent until the CPU speed ramps back up. This condition happens ONLY when docked to a TB3 dock. It does not happen on battery, and it does not happen when plugged in to a power adapter. I have tested multiple Thinkpad TB3 docks with same behavior. I have purchased a new CalDigit TS3 Plus dock with same behavior. I have changed among 3-4 different TB3 cables. It happens whether all my peripherals are plugged in to the dock or none of them. I am on the latest build of Windows 10 (1809, installed today - 1803 installed until today). Same behavior.I have updated the dock firmware, the Thunderbolt software, everything Thunderbolt related I can find, including rolling back to previous drivers. I have manually gone through the entire list of drivers at https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... and installed the latest versions of every driver. I'm at a loss so looking here for any suggestions of... I use a kensington thunderbolt dock (SD5200T) for power, display, ethernet and USB. With the provided 0.5m passive cable it's fine, but I'm having problems with both 2m active cables that I've tried. With the 2m active cables, they either drop in and out every few seconds or they work for 15-30 minutes then drop out completely. The power connection seems to continue working throughout, it's the display, USB etc. that drops out. I wonder if it is either the X1 or dock port overheating because the connectors get very hot (I think they have a chip in each end). Is there any diagnostic information I can dig out to help work out the problem? It may be a problem with the dock rather than the X1 of course. The two cables I have tried were from CalDigit and CableMatters. I've updated the thunderbolt bios and software to the latest. There isn't yet a bios update for the kensington but I'm keeping my eyes open for it.
