How do I share files from comp. to comp.?

Q: How do I share files from comp. to comp.?

Alright, I'm clueless to Networking pretty much.

I have recently set up a linksys wrt54g router to my desktop with a wireless signal to my laptop.

My question is, is there a way/how do I share files between the two computers. What do I do to set this up (if it's possible), and what other equipment might I need.

I'm pretty much networking illertiate so go easy on me.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: How do I share files from comp. to comp.?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How do I share files from comp. to comp.?

If using XP . . run the "Set up a home or small office network" wizard from "My Network Places on each machine . . tell it you want to share files . . then set the folders you want to share to share on the network ( right click . . select Properties . . Sharing tab )

Hi!
Can anyone show me step by step how to set up my 2 comp. to share files(no broad band).I am using one desk top;one laptop, both are wins98,netgear router 4 ports,ADSL cable internet,HP6110 all in one printer. Thanks so much in advance(i do not know much regarding comp. please be gental)

A:How to share files from 2 comp.

You need to connect the two systems together through the router. Don't mess with the "uplink" port. Don't use the "WAN" port. I don't know the router that you have, so I can't tell you the label - but it's pretty easy to figure out.

Next you need to navigate you're way through the file sharing menus. You're not "adding network place" - that's going to get some web server address. You want to add a computer from your work group.

Be sure that you go into your control panel and enable file sharing! That is very important.

I hope that helped. I'll go navigate that OS right now and see if I can be more specific.

A good trick (and super easy) is if you have a buddy with a XP OS, pop the CD in your drive and go to "additional Operations/task" and it takes you to a differant submenu. That submenu has an option for filesharing. It will download an easier "wam-bam" wizard for you

I hope this helps

What I would like to do is share all of my email on 3 computers. I have 2 computers that are connected via D-Link 614+ wireless router, and both access my cable connection just fine. (These 2 connect to router with ethernet cable) I have a 3rd computer (laptop) that accesses via wireless card, no problems there.

What I need info on is how can share all of my email on all computers so one doesn't download "some" of the email and the other doesn't download "some" of the email. I want all 3 to be able to access "all" of the email as well as being able to send email and see that folder on both computers.

Both desktop computers are running XP Home, laptap running windows me
Connect thru a router
Cable internet

I hope this makes sense. Thanks in advance!

A:Network 2 comp. to share email

You can either configure all the email clients to leave the email on the server, or run an email server on one of the machines yourself. I don't know of any email client that will run well from a shared database directly...

have 3 home comp. networked with xp pro and linksys switch EZXS55W and each comp. has phone line to it for dial-up (modum and home network). would like to somewhat safely share everything on the home computers (dial-up, printer, even C: drives) but not be vulnerable when on-line with dial-up. use to use netbutal with ME and two comp. and was pretty happy with set up and the password system. I have read about networking XP and realize this is a lot harder task. I have tried some diffent things like removing simple file sharing but have no real idea if I'm protected, probably not. Want to share dial up so we can be online at same time but also like to use phone line on each computer if main comp. off. Have to share printer. I also get real tiried of reading call your netwok administator!!! I guess that's me!!!! Wouldn't even mind if I could only home network when off line from dial-up with the exception of sharing the dial-up connection. Currently I don't have the Bios system administator password protected. I also don't totally understand the firewall system, can I set up the firewall to close sharing and home networking with the excecption of sharing dial-up when dial up conection present!!! Any help greatly appreciated.

I have been reading on different sites to download different anti-spyware programs. Right now I have:

1. Ad-aware
2. Spybot
3. IE Spyad w/ Zoned Out
4. PC pitstop driver alert
5. Spyware Blaster
6. ATF Cleaner
7. PC Pitstop Driver Alert
8. Hosts Xpert
9. Windows Defender

Will these slow down my system, or make it take longer to shut down and restart my comp? Is there anything on this list that I should not have? If it's not a big deal, does anyone recommend any more apps I should download or things to do to make my system better?

If I install almost all of the reputable spyware removers and system optimizers, etc. on my comp, will it slow down my system? Will there be any negative consequences?

Right now I would opt for a faster computer over a secure one, so I would prefer speed over an increased possibility of a virus, etc (still want an anti-virus though). I'd like my comp to shut down and restart quickly, but of course it's not that big of a deal.

With that in mind...I was wondering what the computer "gurus" think is the best way I can optimize my computer? A:Newbie questions. Will anti-spyware, etc. slow down comp? Best way to optimize comp?

As a rule, you use:
1 firewall
1 antivirus
* Norton is not the best program around, and it's a resource hog, but since you bought it, you'll have to live with it until it expires.
* Using more then one of each is asking for problems (conflict).
As for antispyware programs, you can have as many, as you want, however, I wouldn't use more then 2 as startups, since you want fast computer.
Your computer specs look very good, but the lower number of startups, the better (this is another thing to check).
As for antispyware, I'd keep Spyware Blaster as a startup program, and I'd add a-squared: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/
You may want to run others, you have once in a while, or when any problem arises.

In addition, you want to keep your computer clean of garbage, and for that purpose, you want to get CCleaner: www.ccleaner.com

Once a month, you want to run defrag. I recommend free jkDefrag: http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ instead of Windows defrag.

That's about it. If you have more questions, please, ask.

I've got an annoying problem I'm trying to smooth out. On my 3-computer LAN, I've got network shares set up on all three comps. (Not homegroup; not public folders; those aren't workable for my situation.)

On my main work computer ("Comp A") (Win 7 Home Premium), whenever I open the sharelist on either "B" or "C", I have the extreme pleasure of waiting 8-10 seconds before the shares on the requested machine are presented.

Other than that, the shares work perfectly, except for the annoying delay every time I want to use Comp A to open the list of shares on Comp B or Comp C.

What I'm sharing: My user directory on each comp. (I'm the only user on this 3-node LAN.) Sharing with Homegroup or Public Folders isn't feasible.

When the delay happens: Courtesy of Wireshark, I've learned that when the delay occurs, it occurs after "Negotiate Protocol Response" and before "Session Setup Request".

I'm also getting the same delay behavior on one other computer (Comp C), but only when accessing the share list Comp A. Here's the specific run-down...

Computer A
Windows 7 Home Premium
Hard-Wired
8-second delay opening shares on Comp B and Comp C.
Computer B
Windows 7 Ultimate
Hard-wired
No delay opening shares on Comp A or Comp C
Computer C
Windows 7 Ultimate
Wi-fi
8-second delay opening shares on Comp A (Home Prem.) but *not* Comp B (Ult.)

I want to be able to print from my XP Computer to the Vista computer in the other room, wirelessly.

Printer on the Vista computer is "shared"...I don't know anything about networks
I use control panel: "add a printer" -> "A network printer" -> "Browse for printers" -> it shows some sort of window with icons that don't really mean much to me:

One category is called "Workgroup" and when I click it, the Vista name of the computer in the other room shows up, but nothing happens when I double click that. I connected to a wireless printer a long time ago this way when one was connected to an XP computer, and the actual name of the printer would show up.

Does anyone know how to do it?

I recently set up a workgroup called "workgroup" so that my two PC's could share files.

The XP comp is called Qing, and can access the workgroup and log onto the linux server called Han (running Fedora 6 with Samba) . Once logged onto Han from Qing, I can see the shared folder, but when i try to access it I get the following message:

"\\Han\share is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found."

On Han, the linux comp, I have set up a shared folder called "share" with full permissions.
I have enabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP and rebooted and still no luck,
I have searched the internet and these forums for a similar problem but was unable to find anything that I could use.

Any help would be great!

My dad has expensive construction software that he needs on a day to day basis, but his laptop is dying and very slow. Currently his laptop runs Vista x86, and I wanted to give him my laptop that runs 7 x64. Could I swap the hard drives so that its an easy transition, or would that not work? Thanks for any input and suggestions.

A:Hard drive from one comp work in another comp like it did before?

"his laptop is dying and very slow"

that might mean his hard drive is bad, or that he has too many programs/malware installed, in which case you would not want to put his drive in your laptop.

But to answer your question, it depends on how different the chipset drivers are between the two machines. But if you have the win7 x64 install dvd, you should be able to do a repair install if windows is not able to boot after switching hard drives.

You can't do it.
64-bit has to be a clean installation.
You can transfer your data, but all programs have to be reinstalled.

Two days ago I encountered a virus on the comp while installing some pirated (eeek) software. Needless to say I got my due! The comp rebooted... or I rebooted -I am still hazy on it- and I could not find my taskbar and it looked like half of my desktop icons had been moved down the screen. I tried to move them but nothing worked and I also tried to recover the taskbar using ctrl-esc. Anyway I found your website and someone suggested using DR Web and AVG spyware as well as Smitfraudfix I did all of this and still nothing has changed. There was also a suggestion to use hijakthis so this is the point I am at now. Any further help would be appreciated.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 11:37:30 AM, on 8/7/2007Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: Safe modeRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exeC:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exeC:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXEC:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exeO2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Re... Hi.
I just got my new laptop and I am trying to transfer files from old computer to it. I tried to set up a home network by following the wizard. When I go to My Network Places from my new computer, nothing shows. I tried pressing the View Workgroup computers button from there and all I got was:

"Home not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions."

What should I do?

A:Network Problem. New comp can't access old comp.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

------------------- Use text after this line -------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa]
"restrictanonymous"=dword:00000000
------------------- Use text before this line -----------------

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

If that doesn't do it, let's follow these basic debug steps.

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

PING each computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. You can obtain the IP address of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG. This should work for any Windows version. A failure here needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs: Workstation, DHCP Client, DNS Client, Server, TCP/IP Netbios helper, Computer Browser.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

I just bought a belkin easy transfer wire thinking it'll let me transfer files from one computer to another... it seems it just transfer whole accounts without asking me what I want to transfer over.

I was looking for a better option than transferring to USB then transferring to other computer. Is there a way to do this?

A:transfer data from comp to comp

to just transfer 'files and folders'--use a crossover cable (under $10)--see think link with instructions:

Hello there, I recently upgraded my comp by replacing mobo, graphics, ram, cpu
pretty much the lot except for my hdd and cd drive.
the problem is now it wont boot and keeps restarting, it gets to the windows logo and then goes to a blue screen for half a sec then restarts. i have windows 7 and even the repair tool doesnt help with the problem.
ether my hdd has had it (i have had it for a while now) or there is a issue with my new ram?
could this be a compatability issue or a fault?

i have tried the windows 7 repair tool but comes up saying cant fix problems. tried restarting from a earlier time, and iv also tried to boot from the windows 7 disk but it just freezes so i can boot or install.

can anyone help me try and get this new beast of a comp up and running ???

A:Upgraded comp but now comp keeps restarting

First you need to turn off automatic restart. Go to Control Panel, System, Advanced System settings, Start Up and Recovery, settings and un-check automatically restart

My parents have a new computer. They would like their photo collection from their old computer (win 98) transferred to their new computer. The old machine does not have a CD Burner. How would I go about switching them?

A:Transfering files from old comp to new one

Well, you could install the hard drive from the old system on the new system and transfer the files that way. Or you could use a network to do it. If the old system had USB you could use a flash drive or equivalent.

Hi. I need to reformat my hard drive b/c it has a bug that prevents me from logging into windows. I tryed to reinstall XP but it did not correct the problem. However, I do not want to lose the data on my hard drive. Is there a way I can transfer/copy the data from this computer to another computer on a network? Keep in mind that this cannot be done through windows on one computer.

Thanks,

C2D: Dont stress yourself out for nothing / you can buy decent used & new IDE drives on ebay dirt cheap / I bought an 80 gig western digital New the other day for $40.00 / you can buy good used drives alot cheaper than that !! then load a new clean install version of win xp onto the new drive and slave your old drive / you can pick whatever you want off that baby then / no torture there !!!!

the only rule to using ebay = buy from a seller with a very high sales record and a very high feedback rating / i.e. 2500 sales and 98.9% feedback rating / those kind of sellers arent into the shaddy stuff !!

this one will go for under $20.00

All I want to do is to transfer about 600Mb's of files from one computer to another. What is the least expensive way, please, apart from using floppies?

I've read a bit about using a null cable but don't really understand it. If that is the cheapest way what sort of place would I get one from and how does it attach to the comps, please?

A:taking files from old comp to new

How much data are you talking about. A few files can be transferred by floppy. Slow and tedious but a common medium between systems. For larger amounts of data you could look at a zip drive. Connect to your old pc, copy files & apps to zip then connect to new pc and copy from zip to new pc.
With apps you may be better reinstalling anyway. As a tip with your new PC ask for your drive to be partitioned into two logical drives, you'll get C & D and keep all your apps and data on D leaving C for os and drivers and related stuff. This will help in the future and make backupe easier coz you won't have to back everything up.

Hi, not sure if this is the right forum but whatev

I just recently got a new computer installed with the Vista Home Premium x64 OS. After many failed attempts at transferring my old files i eventually ended up putting my old hard drive into my new computer, and attempted to drag and drop into a folder i created specifically for those files.

Upon trying to do this, it transferred all of my program files, but when it gets to my actual documents, where i keep my most important files, it says i need administrative permission to do this.

Then, when i tried to access the files directly in my old hard drive, it said that i couldn't do that, and showed this:

"You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to get access to this folder."

"You have been denied permision to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use the security tab."

and then when i use the security tab to transfer file permission to me, it still doesn't do anything.

any help please?

When you are going to "open" up the folder that is on your old HDD. Right click on it and click "Run as administrator." This should allow you full access to the files and able to transfer them without any problems.

Im thinking that maybe i should enable sharing on the desktop and connect via wireless. I just dont know how i should go about it with out. Would doing an adhoc connection be better?

Please suggest a possible way to transfer..and how i would go along doing it!

A:Really Need Help On How To Move Files From One Comp To Another

I bought redchair software because I figured the $25 was worth being able to back up all of my music. It's called anapod explorer, and works very well.

Another one is sharepod, which is free, but it stopped working for me when I really needed it.

Another one is yamipod, which never worked for me, but others say it is great.

All being software for transferring music from your ipod to your computer.

The other option is of course a separate hard drive.

Hi,

I just bought a new computer, i7 860 and have put 7 x64 on it.

my motherboard is ausus p7p55d and has one ide socket on the board.

I was using this socket for my cd and dvd drives but I have detached them so I can plug in my old IDE hard drive.

I was using the IDE drive just 2 days ago in my old system.

Sometimes when I boot up the drive is seen and sometimes not.

when the drive is seen I try and copy some files over to my new sata drive I have in the new system. some of the files copy over but the the IDE drive always gets stuck. when I try to cancel the copy windows stops responding partially and I cant get out of the copy window and the old IDE hard drive explorer window.

So I restart windows and normally it now doesn't see the IDE drive.

What is going wrong?
How do I get my files off this hard drive???

Thanks,

Duncan.

ps. this forum is great. I'm very pleased it exsists!!!

I used the FAST several years ago to transfer my wife's settings from XPHome to XPPro. All went well with one exception - there's a flashing CD icon that appears once every 2 seconds above the cursor. Troubleshooting at that time didn't reveal any fixes. I'd suggest backing up manually and moving things over that way (a plus is that you'll have the stuff stored on some sort of medium as a backup).

When i went to folder options again , the hide hidden files / folders option was selected.

Inspite of selecting show all files and folders options the setting are not being reflected.
