slow comp, especially on start-up & jumpy streaming video

Q: slow comp, especially on start-up & jumpy streaming video

Main problems: Programs take a while to start-up, windows takes a while to start-up, all icons on desktop take a while to appear when starting up (just generic icon for a while until computer actually starts responding), video and audio is choppy.Already went through the Malware attempts and disk scanning, defragging, and all that:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...p;#entry1586320Not sure if it's software or hardware related as I'm not sure what CPU temperatures I should be expecting and the computer has always run hot.The previous HD on this computer got borked and ended up getting a new one thats much bigger and faster (7200 vs 5400). So far from all the different hardware testing programs everything seems to be passing.Any ideas? It's been driving me crazy and sure is making it hard to get work done. Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How much RAM installed? How much free space on C:? How large is C:?I find that..."slow" is a relative term and when applied to a system...much depends on what is installed and running.Don't know if you have looked at remarks by Quietman7 at Slow Computer-browser Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/87058/slow-computerbrowser-check-here-first;-it-may-not-be-malware/.FWIW: From the time that I press the power button...until all icons are present and system is accessible...normally takes 2-3 minutes for me (which is probably a good average).Problems with video files...depends heavily on system capabilities and origin/locale of the video source (online or hard drive).Louis

I have followed thoroughly various tutorials for setting up OBS for streaming. Initially I had set it up for Youtube, then switched to Twitch. This works fine. I have absolutely no complaint with that. Streaming out to these platforms is working as I would like.
This issue I'm experiencing is what I can best describe as a pulsing or jumping, about once per second when I play a file back that I have recorded (not streamed) with OBS.

The audio is flawless, no stuttering, nothing like that. Audio BR is at 160...

As I watch the status information in OBS as I am recording, I see no warning about overloaded encoder, the frame rates are where they are supposed to be, no dropped frames. everything should appear to be good. CPU load is unremarkable, again plenty of headroom. It doesn't seem to matter if I increase bit rate, decrease bit rate, CBR, VBR, increase or decrease framerate, or which software i use to view the output fine: VLC, WMP, whatever, there is this pulsing. Its just enough to be annoying. Its subtle, but it's there. And it doesn't matter which PC I play the file on ( I have a few I can test it with)

The computer running OBS is more than adequate for the task.

I have - in an effort to improve things - changed recording format, changed encoder, even the location to which I was saving it ( initially that was a network drive, but I change to an internal SSD for test purposes) I can not get rid of this.

This is just for a little pet project, I ... Read more

Hello everyone,

Had an issue upon the laptop loading up for 24hrs now and I think is has something to do with Windows Backup!?

I have a little flag with a red X on it and it says you have one problem

Check you backup (important)

when I click on it its comes up with "The request could not be performed because of an I/0 device error"

"Try to run backup again"
or
"Change backup settings"

When I click "Try to run backup again" it comes up with (after attemping) "The last backup did not complete successfully"

Click on "Change backup settings" it just allows me to pick the same backup as there is only one choice my E:DVD .

Also noticed I have no System restore point either...

Now the slow start could have nothing to do with this but i have no idea.

Thanks if you help.

A:Slow/Jumpy Start Up.

Hi Egerton87,

Do you have a desktop or laptop computer? Is an external hard-drive connected to your computer at the moment for backup purposes? Did this issue all of a sudden started happening?

I recommend testing your hard-drive for any errors. Go to the manufacturer's website of your computer hard-drive and download the "Diagnostics Utility". Put the program onto a CD and boot the computer to the CD. Follow the on-screen instructions and test the HDD for any errors.

One other thing, can your computer boot into safe mode? If so, does the computer work fine in safe mode?

HI , I was given an older computer to revamp for my brother. He is on a disability income and I want to burn him some video files to watch .. have some old family movies. It is an older computer with a Celeron 466 processor, and integrated video and sound. The video shares ram . I have assigned it 64 megs of ram and have installed 256 megs total . It is running windows 98SE. Is there any hope of getting divx video or mpeg video to run smoothly on here ? If so would my best bet be trying to install a separate video card, adding more ram , upgrading the cpu , all of the above? I need to do this the least inexpensive way possible please. I know my last pc before the one I built was a 533 and it could play video without this difficulty as long as I didn't run other things at the same time. PS have also tried putting the video on the hard drive and still get pauses in the video and then the sound isn't in sync.
Thank you very much.

I uninstalled several dvd conversion programmes on the 18 dec 08, They did not work and then installed one that did. After this my pc ran very slow, sound from online bbc radio was distorted and online videos would not play without jumping, firefox was very slow to load in fact any programme i tried to load was very slow and i occasionally had a crash. I tried cc cleaner, norton and several other registry cleaners but other than telling me that i had a problem and saying they had been fixed, the problem remained. I also uninstalled as many programmes as i could including itunes, google earth etc.etc. I cannot play itunes without distortion. I reset to an earlier date but this was on the 18th and could not go back further. My pc is an Acer Aspire 1640z with xphome and service pack 3. It's time to replace it but I would like to keep it going a little longer. I am reluctant to do a system restore as I'm not too savvy. Can anybody suggest a solution that a none too technical person like me, could try?

1) My computer will not load and play WMV files...itll play .rm, quicktime, youtube vids, but not wmv files. So if i go to www.break.com and one of the videos is a wmv it wont play...WHY!!!??

2) i have a Canon zr30mc digital video camcorder, and im trying to get the videon onto my computer. it is hooked up through the DV in/out, and opens with Nero Vision. everything it begins to record the video to the hard drive or to a CD, nero messed up and crashes...what can i do?

thanks everyone

A:2 Problems...playing Wmv Streaming Videos, Capturing Video From A Dv Camcorder To The Comp

I can't address the second one -- you might want to query Nero support -- and give an exact description of the "crash" -- if there is an error message you need to report it fully. On the first, right click on a downloaded .wmv file and select "properties".What media player is it currently associated to open with? Typically this would be Windows Media Player by default. But you can try others -- such as Real Player if you have it -- or download Videolan which plays just about anything:http://www.videolan.org/You can change the default player association through the file properties "change" dialog -- which I think works best if you have VistaBy the way I had a similar problem in Windows Vista trying to play .avi files online in Internet Explorer. Changing the association -- through the individual file properties -- back and forth resolved it.

This has been happening it seems like forever.I can do all other things at good speeds(p2p,browsing,download files, etc)It has been suggested by a friend that i have a virus, I have scanned with my freeware applications(avg, spybot, malwarebytes) and they have come up empty. I feel i must add that i do get an annoying pop up regularly asking me to connect to the internet and when i try it says error 678 can not connect to the remote computer. When i cancel the pop up i am still connected anyway. I have spoken to my isp and they assure me everything is fine, it's just that i'm streaming from free sites and then they start pushing their own site. I'm confused and disappointed because everyone talks about utube and yet i have given up trying to use it.I have the latest adobe flash player and it will load, only very slowly. hi guys... I just want you to help me in this problem if its ok.. I have a Toshiba L510 notebook for about a year now.. about two weeks ago i was watching a video from animecrazy.net using google chrome as my browser. I just notice that the video took a lot of time to buffer which is unusual because before it was buffering fast. Then i browse youtube and watch some videos and it was fine and the video is loading fast. Then i tried other video streaming sites like megavideo and same situation with animecrazy.net. The video is loading slow... I was just bothered because all video streaming sites i browse except youtube are buffering slow...I also tried other browser like firefox and IE but the same happens..I am using windows 7 starter.. hope you can help me in this.. Thanks..

A:Slow video streaming

Does this happen all the time or only certain times of the day? I just ran 5 minutes of a video on animecrazy.net and it seemed to run fine. Have you tried pausing it for 3 minutes then starting it back up? I think that method may work best. Give it time to preload the episode and you should be caught up. animecrazy.net gets a lot of traffic I am sure, which means that its going to reduce the bandwith you are able to recieve through them, as is megavideo. I know with mega I have had that issue and had to let it buffer, Ill ussually start it, pause as soon as the picture shows, or ad dissapears, go grab a drink and bag of chips, come back and watch.

Hope this is the issue, as it seems it may be if youtube is running fine. If not, it could be a codec problem, have you loaded any codecs since the problem started? Youtube has a lot of 3gp videos, while the other sites most likely run mpeg.

I doubt it's virus related, else you'd experience it elsewhere, not just a slow video.

Can you please elaborate on the interrupting? We'll need to know what is actually happening.. Is the PC blue-screening, rebooting, crashing? Or is it just the video is lagging / jumpy? Or are you streaming to an extender and that's whats laggy / jumpy? Are you doing it over Wireless, Wired? Are you on a GIG LAN etc..

A:Streaming video - slow

This is mostly due to your internet speed. First, when you click on a streaming video, stop it and let the buffer load the video (the grey line ahead of the playing line). Once the buffer has completed downloading, start the video, it should play without interruption. To test your internet speed go to speedtest.net if your internet seed is .5 mb or less then it is too slow to play streaming video.

This is frustrating since I can view these videos on my friends PC which is older and has cable as their ISP. What could be the problem??

Hi all,
This is my first post here in this forum and it is about my slow online video streaming on windows vista ultimate.

I have a brand new T61 (T7300, 2.0 GHz), with 2 gigs of RAM and extra 1 gig of turbo memory, a feature that core 2 duo processor technology supports.

I am using Time Warner's Road Runner 10MB/s connection and for the first few weeks (around a month and a half back) it ran absolutely fine but after that started degrading in terms of available speed.

I check my internet speed at www.speedtest.net regularly, and it stays usually about ~9300 KB/s (Down) and ~340 KB/s (Up) and even after staying at this speed, my video streaming on websites such as youtube and googlevideo does not stay continuous.

I am using Kaspersky AV 7.0.0.125 that keeps me (atleast I feel like) miles away from malware and adware. It does not have its own firewall and therefore I am using windows firewall itself.

Can someone please suggest what I should I do to make my video streaming experience better (or much better in terms of what I am paying for the Internet / month)?

Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Online video streaming extremely slow

Did you ever figure this out? This is basically the same problem I'm having. Watching my processor usage and memory, I'm ok, but online videos are working horribly. I have a 7MB connection with Time Warner and have also verified the speed.

One weird thing I've noticed in addition to the slow load times in YouTube is that even when the slider has not caught up to the edge of the loading bar it will still stop and think.

My system has stopped streaming web videos. They do play after 30 mites to over one hour to allow them to buffer. Downloading video is equally slow - e.g. a 780 MB video might take upwards of 3 hours.

I originally suspected my Firefox browser, and switched to Chrome. At first there were signs of hope but soon the same stagnation started.

The system runs as expected. I use Adobe CS5.5 and run After Effects and Premiere with no problems. It is only when accessing online videos from YouTube, Vimeo, or most cites I've tried. My 8GB of RAM is nevern overloaded, but even with 4GB free it runs slow when downloading video. My hard drive has 20 GB free. The only time the CPU goes to 100% is during rendering some AE projects.

Also - it is NOT my Internet connection since there are no problems with my iPad on WiFi, and other systems have no problems on the same network.

Help!!

Thank you.

I recently bought a wireless card for my desktop. Previously I was using a fob-type usb adapter. When I used the usb adapter I was able to achieve download speeds of around 1 MB/s and stream 1080p video, but with the card my download speed maxes out at about 250 kB/s and it takes a few minutes for the same video quality to load, if it does at all. I'd ordinarily blame the card entirely for this problem, but when I test my connection speed with it, I get far higher results. Additionally, my upload speeds with the card can often rise to 500+ kB/s and are generally higher than my download speeds at all times. Just wondering if anyone could tell me what exactly is going on here.

A:Slow download speed and nearly impossible video streaming

Hi Alphabetter. There's more than one approach to troublshoot this. First thing that pops into my head is, since we ar edealing with wireless, maybe you are dropping packets. Do you know how to open a command prompt and use the ping command? I would try pinging something on the internet:
ping google.com -t
and let that run while you test some of those things you are trying to do. If you are getting a few timeouts, that would cause "slowness". Also, look at what the ping times are (latency). This is a good first step to troubleshoot such an issue.

Can you tell us a little more about your wireless service? Are we talking about a wireless ISP? And has your service contract or service level changed at all when you switched devices?

One question: Where are you getting 1080p content from the internet??? (if I may ask)

Hello Bleeping comp.
I have a small Acer notebook which has been running fine up until this point.
Lately i have been having trouble using video streams from sites like gametrailers and youtube
the videos eventually load slower than usual but the sound is choppy as is the video, i can hear the the audio skipping very slightly.
Also the sound files (the opening startup sound windows makes, or the pop up error message sound) have been skipping and sound very choppy.

I haven't gotten any important error messages lately either.
If it helps i run VIPRE Antivirus software but it hasn't found anything that could be causing this.
Any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: i forgot to say that all other parts of my laptop are running smoothly which is why the problem is so confusion to me

A:Youtube, video streaming problems, slow computer

When you say small Acer is it an Aspire One with SSD? If so I found a small program that makes it run as fast as my tower, it has no issues with streaming video or for that matter nothing else!

Hi,

I'll try to provide as much of the story as I can... hopefully some computer genius out there can help me, as HP Support evidently cannot.

I have an HP Pavillion DV6t-1300 laptop, barely 4 months old. Here are the specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64
Intel Core2 Duo T6600 @ 2.2GHz
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator/Mobil Intel 4 Series Express Chipset
Internet Explorer 8
Adobe Flashplayer 10
Windows Media Player 12
Java Version 6 update 18

From day one, literally, of using this laptop, it has had trouble playing streaming video online from any website. CNN, Youtube, ABC.. anywhere. I have another 2 year old Dell laptop (Windows Vista) that runs on the same wireless internet at my home and has no difficulty whatsoever with streaming video, so I'm inclined to think the internet speed is not the issue. (Speedtest.net reports 52 ping, .92 Mgbs download & .76 upload for my connection). I have Symantec Endpoint Protection software up to date on this problem computer. I've run CCleaner, downloaded 'Video Accelerator', and Microsoft Silverlight with no improvement to the streaming video problem. I've also updated my BIOS, updated my Graphics card driver, reset my Internet Explorer settings to default- no success.

The problem is that video will play- it's just super choppy and buffers unpredictably. Even the commercials before episodes on ABC or NBC don't make it through without stuttering crazily. I was told by the last HP rep I spoke ... Read more

I posted in the Web & Email forum, and they said I should post my HJT log here. I'm mostly looking to get rid of unnecessary processes so I can speed up my computer a little. I see various things here I never use--Spy Sweeper, Yahoo, AOL, etc--but I want to make sure I'm getting rid of the right things.

Thanks!

Hello there members ,

I'm working on my mom's computer again. Last time I was here it had a bunch of viruses, and the good folks here helped a lot to get it functional again. It does not have a virus now, nor malware, but it is extremely slow. Trying to play music from Internet stations or watch youtube videos online is impossible, and overall it feels sluggish.

The Windows Task Manager shows CPU usage pretty low at 4% or so. 71 processes running which doesn't seem high to me. I see System Idle Process, CPU at 99? Not sure that's it though. There's probably about 55% or so available on the C disk drive. I'm about to defrag it and see if that fixes anything, but I'm pretty doubtful.

I've run all the usual anti-spyware (Spybot + Malware bytes), and anti-virus (Avira) but that hasn't helped a thing. What are some things I can do to troubleshoot?

BTW it's Windows XP on this machine. Any assistance is most appreciated

A:Slow Computer - Herky / Jerky Streaming Audio Video

Did you used to have the problem before your malware issues? Playing audio and video online could simply be an issue with your Internet connection. When you say playing is impossible, what does that mean, nothing comes out, stuttering.... Have you measured your upload and download speed? Speedtest is fine, if you avoid hitting the ads. What sort of things are sluggish? Page changes, mouse movements, programs starting up.........The System Idle process being 99 means it's not very busy! 71 processes does seem a bit high but these days every man and his dog wants to run a service on your PC. Mine are currently 54. I would have thought that during your malware removal exercise, others in this forum would have indicated what programs and services do not need to be running.

Hi, I'm using Windows XP, sp3. Internet Explorer 8. On a Pentium 4 cpu 3.06 mhz, 512mb ram. A few months ago I got a blue screen error saying windows detected a hard disc problem and had to scan for errors, with none found. I checked with a 'Gateway scandisc utility' and 'Microsoft checkdisc' again no errors. Then we noticed videos were slowing down, pausing with lots of pops and clicks in the audio both in Internet video(news feeds etc.) as well as cd games. I tried to update the drivers for both audio & video which didn't help. (ATI Radeon 9700pro video driver update keeps directing me to 'driver robot' which looked suspicious $.) I also keep getting a message saying "My virtual memory is too low, windows has to increase the size of virtual memory". When I ran a thorough scan with Avast it ran for over 6 hours and was only 30%finished. After about 4 attempts it finally finished, I put everything in the Chest as suggested and the computer ran much better with no noise ( clicks). That only lasted a day at best. I ran the scan a few times since and nothing is found. I ran Advanced SystemCare 3 and fixed the suggested fixes. It's a little better, but still not right. Two or three times over the last month malicious programs started to run uninvited 'security'scans on our desktop while on the internet. The only way to stop them was to shut down the computer.
