scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

Q: scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello keviinf, modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also. Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.Otherwise it won´t work.I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

Hi guys,my X250 laptop just got a factory repair, in wich they reset the whole system. Now I have a problem: When I try to scroll using my trackpoint and the scrolling button, it only works in some instances. I can scroll on websites in Firefox, but in lists it doesn't work anymore. Lists like my settings or the file explorer. That is pretty annoying. I guess it has something to do with the mouse being on a linked item. As the problem also appears in Firefox as long as my curser is over a clickable item wich contains a link. On items that are clickable, but don't "contain a link" in the sense that by right clicking it gives me options like "open link in another tab", scrolling still seems to work. That theory kind of contradicts that, in the file explorer, it doesn't seem to make any difference wether or not the curser is over something clickable or not. I think I have another clue: I am not sure about this, but I think the symbol that appears by the curser while using the scrolling key also changed. Advice would be greatly appreciated,David

Hi all. I've seen this issue posted about many times before and can't get a hold of lenovo. When I try to use the "contact us - email" page the link doesn't work!  I have a x250 I purchased in 2015. It has been working great until recently. I usually use the trackpoint and have the touchpad disabled. Recently it just stops working and the only way I can get the mouse to function again is by using an external standard mouse. When I go to mouse settings it doesn't even recognize that I have a touchpad/trackpoint, even after installing updated ULTRANAV drivers. This also extends to the keyboard, some days the keyboard will not work at all. The only thing I can do is restart 100 times and cross my fingers it works one time. I've tried moving the mouse at the login screen, pressing firmly on the touchpad, etc. Nothing works aside from the off chance it cooperates after restarting. So, I have updated drivers numerous times for windows 10 and yet my trackpoint/touchpad still seem to rarely work. I am out of a warranty on this so I'm not sure what to do. My boyfriend is suggesting a factory reset, does anyone think that will work or have any other ideas? Thanks.

Hello,I have an issue whith my new X1 Carbon (G7), that my touchpad does not react immediately when I click with the phisical touchpad buttons (ie. the buttons above the touchpad). It is noticable when trying to drag&drop an item, or when trying to use the scrollbar similarly (clicking and dragging). It works well when I use the lower area of the touchpad to "click". For example: I select a file in File Explorer with a click and immediately move my fingers on the touchpad to drag it somewhere else, but it only starts to move after a short moment. It feels like the touchpad does not want to react, but then it suddenly starts to work... I thought of driver update, but Synaptics driver is not available. Maybe it's an issue with the Microsoft drivers?Does anyone else have a similar issue? Thanks

After I installed Windows 7 (couldn't upgrade, had to do a custom install), the scrolling on the right side of my touchpad stopped working. I downloaded a new driver, but it still doesn't work.

When I go into the Synaptics device settings, it says that I have a "Standard Pointing Device" and when I look at the settings it only gives me options for two buttons (no scrolling options). I attached a picture of the options window I'm talking about.

Can anybody help?

I'm using Vista Home Basic on a Compaq Presario laptop (refurbished) which I bought in Jan '08 (roughly). I have installed all updates (except Siverlight, whatever that is) provided by the automatic update facility.

Here's my problem: periodically the scroll function stops working. I think it happens most often after going to media-rich sites like MSNBC and watching a video.

It's not a "help me now or I'll shoot the computer" kind of thing, but it's very annoying. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I'm NOT very technically savy (more the intellectual type, which is to say dumb about computers) and otherwise, Vista is working quite well (after installing an additional 1.5 gigs of RAM). I'm very, very reluctant to do anything which might crash Vista, and we intellectual types have a very hard time figuring out that stuff.

One of the more persistent (of several) problems plaguing my P50 (20EN) is the spastic, herky-jerky scrolling when using the TrackPoint with middle button. This is far and away the worst trackpoint I have ever used, and I've used a lot of trackpoints over the last 20 years. There are only two TrackPoint settings on this machine, and neither is relevant to this issue:? The 'ThinkPad' tab in the Windows 10 'Mouse Properties' panel has a checkbox to enable and disable TrackPoint globally and radio buttons to select the middle button function.? The Synaptics Control Panel has a slider for controlling the TrackPoint scrolling speed. TrackPoint has always stood out on my list of reasons for buying ThinkPads in the first place, so this is issue particularly poignant for me, and, frankly, I'm close to my wit's end on this one. Please, someone tell me there exists a solution.

Hello everyone, I searched a bit both these forums and others but haven't found the solution to this problem I'm experiencing. I recently bought a used T430 and I've been using it for the last couple of days, trying to get used to trackpoint and all. I performed a clean windows install and installed a Win 10 education my university provides. I followed the advice on Lenovo webpage about letting Windows update do its thing first and then run the Lenovo System Update utility to update drivers as necessary. Everything's working nicely other than some issues with the trackpoint buttons (the 3 buttons just below the space bar are called the trackpoint buttons I guess?)  Anyway, the issue is that before I did a fresh install, the middle button when pushed entered the scroll mode which then let me scroll using the trackpoint. Now it still enters the scroll mode but also does a right-click when I let go. This leads to an issue where a right-click is performed at every scroll step(if that makes sense) which leads to wonky scrolling. One other issue is that the right button does nothing at all. I expected the middle button to only have scroll functionality and the right button to simply right-click.  Things I've tried so far: - Manually removed the pointer device and ran Lenovo system update again to update the UltraNav drive, and also disabled auto-driver installation of windows update. The driver version installed by System Update is 19.0.17.115.&nb... Read more

When scrolling with the trackpoint, I find that the pages don't roll as smooth as the older Thinkpads did. My T410 scrolls much more smoothly than my X250, and I'm thinking that it is a driver issue. I have the latest Synaptics driver, which would be 18.1.27.14. I've tried rolling back the drivers, and it still doesn't improve the scrolling issue. Did anyone else experience this problem? Has anyone fixed it? Also, as an aside, I've found that I could not play FPS games with trackpoint. The left and right buttons don't click immediately after typing. I always get killed right after sprinting because I'm standing there, unable to shoot. Other than that, the trackpoint is suprisingly easy to use for games.

The settings for the Microsoft Precision Touchpad on my T470s include the option to reverse the normalling scrolling direction, called "natural scrolling".However, I do not see a similar option to do so for scrolling using the Trackpoint: I have gotten used to reverse-scrolling or "natural scrolling" thanks to my iOS devices, the option to reverse in Windows, and it messes with me when I have to think about it when using the Trackpoint. Is there a way to reverse the scrolling, perhaps via a registry key? Before Windows 10 introduced the feature for trackpads and mice, there was a way to enable reverse scrolling via scripting. I may have to try that for this. Should we ask Lenovo to include this optionin a driver update for Trackpoint devices?

A:Reverse scrolling direction when using Trackpoint

I can report that installing AutoHotkey and then using the following script: WheelUp::Send {WheelDown}ReturnWheelDown::Send {WheelUp}Return You can effectively reverse the scrolling direction on the Trackpoint. Install AutoHotkey and save the above as AutoHotkey.ahk in your Documents folder or where you install AutoHotkey. I would still prefer to have the option in the driver though.

I'm using the ultranav middle button to scroll (I live for this feature which is why I've been buying thinkpads since time immemorial) However, on the t460, scolling with the middle button/nubbin is painfully slow in Word 2007, and Adobe Acrobat/Reader is a nightmare. In Word its just slow and you have to use a lot of pressure on the nubbin (there appears to be no setting to change this). In Acrobat, it's agonizingly slow (in both Reader and Pro) and will "stick" on if you try to go to fast and just scrolling for multiple seconds after you release the button.  Stragely, the trackpad scrolling works fine in Word, though it is still bad in Acrobat.  In addition, the middle button scrolling will frequently slip and stop scrolling, sending the pointer to the bottom of the page.  Nubbin/middle button scrolling works (oddly) extremely well in Microsoft Edge... Please help! Middle button scrollig with the nubbin is the best feature on these machines.  Using: T460 Windows 10 64-bit with the latest drivers.

We just got a Dell XPS-15z, and, we have questions about scrolling on the Cypress touchpad using the Cypress drivers.

When scrolling down (either one finger or 2 fingers), when you hit the bottom of the touchpad, is there any way for the scrolling to continue without your having to lift your finger(s) back to the top of the touchpad? On other Dell laptops, I have Chiral motion, or the scrolling continues so long as your finger is at the bottom of the touchpad? I tried enabling the "Continued Motion" option just in case that was what did it, but that did not seem to work.

Which brings up another question re what "Continued Motion" does.

Also, is there any manual/help document for this driver either on the internet, or in the software itself?

I looked on the forum and on the internet, and couldn't find any answers.

TIA.

Right now when I use the trackpoint the touchpad is disabled while moving the cursor. The touchpad is also disabled when the trackpoint recalibrates itself. This causes problems because I often let go of the trackpoint to do gestures on the touchpad, and sometimes I then have to wait for the trackpoint to recalibrate until I can do anything. Recalibration can take several seconds so sometimes it's really frustrating.  Is my trackpoint working as it should or am I the only one experiencing recalibration for more than 2 seconds? Is there a known way to enable touchpad and trackpoint at the same time on Windows 10? That would solve my problem since I don't care about the drifting, I just want to be able to use the touchpad while it recalibrates.

Yes, there was a post several years ago describing this same issue which was supposedly fixed with an update of the Synaptics driver.  However, I am seeing this issue again on my X270 Windows 10 x64 Pro with latest driver version 19.3.4.219. If I set the mouse pointer size to something larger than default "1" it stays at the larger size until I use the trackpoint middle button to scroll.  the pointer then shrinks back down to size "1".  Just as with the previous report of this issue if I set the middle button function to "click" rather than "scroll" the pointer retains its larger size.  I constantly use trackpoint scrolling so that is not really a fix for me. Has anyone else seen this issue recently and perhaps found a fix that allows continued use of trackpoint scrolling with a larger pointer? Thanks.

Hey! I'm quite happy with my new P1 2nd Gen, except the pointing devices suck. Lenovo seems to have switched the TrackPoint to ALPS which comes very stiff, choppy and inaccurate. I played around with udev rules and acceleration settings which made it a bit better, but it is still far from the awesome accuracy and smoothness of the W540, my last machine. Same with the three buttons on top of the TrackPad - especially the left one doesn't react reliably when hit on the lower right corner. I have to press a second time every ten clicks or so. This definitely sucks, so my question is: Is anyone aware of other manufacturers/options of especially TrackPoints and TouchPad-buttons for the P1 apart from ALPS? BestMarkus

Hi whitehouse87,
Welcome to Lenovo Community! And happy to have you again.

As I understand that you are facing issue with Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons are not working in T410.
You have tried almost everything & I don't think so its related to software or drivers. You can check without drivers once whether clicks are working or not. Else its a hardware issue for sure

I hope the above information helped you.

Good Day!I'm from the Philippines and I bought a refurbished thinkpad p50 from the US at 2016 and I extended its NBD warranty until June 1, 2018. The touchpad and trackpad suddenly stopped working a few weeks ago and it seems that the bios can't recognize them. The wifi reception seems to have also weaken, requiring me to be closer to the wifi source than before. I also tried reinstalling the drivers but it can't still identify the two pointing device. I'm actually planning to ship it to the US this week before my NBD warranty expires, but I don't know anyone from the US right now to avail the NBD service. May I know which address must I send it to, and the proper procedures to avail the repairs?I already spent $170 for the warranty extension last year, and I'll be spending another $100 for the DHL shipping to the US. May I also know if Lenovo will answer the shipping back to my country, since if not, I'll be spending another $100 for it to be shipped back to the Philippines?I also tried calling the service center from the US but I kept on having long calls with no response. Thanks!

So, during the windows installer, no mouse. I couldn't see the pointer, neither the touchpad or trackpoint worked. I managed through using the keyboard, then once I got to the desktop I installed the "Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad" driver and rebooted. Still not working. I installed the thinkvantage system update, it detects no updates. I installed the service bridge. No updates. I then made a linux live USB that I use to install manjaro on all my laptops, yes everything worked out of the box on my previous x1 carbon. Touchpad doesn't work, xorg doesn't even recognize any touchpad present. Anyone else have this? Any solutions? This is actually my 2nd X1 carbon; the first works well but the mouse buttons are loose so Lenovo promised waived restocking and shipping with the purchase of a new order of equal or greater value; I ordered another one with plans to return the first one, because I really needed to keep it for work while I waited for the new one. The new one is actually flawless in terms of build, mouse buttons are solid, the CMOS battery is not loose and producing a rattling noise as it is in the first one, and the bottom cover doesn't have the clicking noise that so many are afflicted with. Really I'm willing to try anything to fix the touchpad.

So, i'm fairly confident that my touchpad/trackpoint is 'bricked' on my X1 Carbon 3rd gen. I don't know what have triggered it but i haven't been able to make any progress in getting it to work in the last 5 hours. 1. There is no response on the trackpointer, the touchpad or its buttons2. Windows doesn't see any mouse-devices under Device Manager3. Uninstalling "Synaptic Pointing Device" results in a yellow generic PS/2 device, but still no mouse4. Bios is newest version N14ET51W (1.29) and i've done a Reset Default Settings5. Both trackpoint and touchpad is enabled in the BIOS6. Running hardware scans using Lenovo Solution Center doesn't yield any errors7. Using TouchPad-Flash Utility - TrackPointDetect yields 20 warnings and 2 errors.8. I've dissambled my laptop touchpad and keyboard connectors and making sure they are firmly connected.9. Is there something i have missed? Anyways. I've made peace with having to replace some parts - nothing lasts forever and i've had my laptop for 4 years now. The million dollar question is though; what to replace?Without knowing the inner workings of the X1 Carbon i can't get my head around how the touchpad an keyboard interacts. On other models its a single component and you replace both keyboard and touchpad together. Do i need to do that on X1 Carbon as well even though its two seperate components?

A:X1 Carbon 3rd gen: Touchpad/trackpoint 'bricked'?

I found a replacement part for the whole top cover, keyboard and touchpad. Is this the replacement you would all recommend?

GreetingsFirst time posting seeing if anyone else is having issues with the X1 Carbon trackpoint/touchpad freezing up on Windows 8.For me it is freezing up every 20min while I am using it, and also when I unplug the AC power. The mouse will freeze up but the keyboard works fine. Usually I am forced to reboot.A USB mouse will work fine during this freeze. I have tried installing all windows updates, Lenovo updates and even system recovery to a date when I didn't have issues but nothing seems to work. Anyone else have this issue? Its been very frustrating owning this x1, as I am on my second one after the first one died on me.

Hi, changuri

I would recommend trying to install the Synaptics base driver and see if that helps your issues. Synaptics is the company that produces the UltraNav driver for Lenovo, so there should not be any loss of functionality, but it tends to fix issues like this in my experience. This driver can be found here. Try downloading and installing that and see if it helps.

Best of luck,
Adam

Hi! I have an E460 laptop, on which I'm dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Manjaro Linux (basically Arch Linux) with Linux kernel 4.5.2. Having the same problem that people discuss in the E460 Keys repeating when pressed for 3 seconds thread, I have been bumping my bios to 1.13, 1.16, and yesterday, to bios 1.17, to see if the problem had been resolved. With the 1.17 bios update, my touchpad and trackpoint stopped working in Linux (In Windows they work fine). They do not even show up in /dev/input, and there is no mention of either of them in dmesg, journalctl, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, or anywhere. The touchpad and stick worked fine in bios 1.13 and 1.16, so I'm thinking there is some regression in 1.17. Is anyone else experiencing this? Can Lenovo confirm whether there is a problem?

Recently got a new Carbon x1, and everything was working fine, but once I closed the laptop and when I woke it up neither TrackPoint nor touchpad was working. Reboots didn't help. Tried installing Synaptics drivers - it said there was no device for update. Device manager detects the touchpad as Microsoft mouse with corresponding drivers (screenshot attached).  Also tried installing update for TrackPoint from the drivers list, it said it needed a reboot to install, after reboot there was an error window that suggested trying once again, several times I saw this message.Anyone have this? Are there any possible solutions?(Searched on the forum, but the solutions were not for my case or didn't work)P.S. It would be kinda stupid for a $1500 laptop not to work because of a touchpad

My touchpad and trackpoint disables after short usage. Max working time is about an hour, typically much less. Sometimes the keyboard has some delay but usually it works fine. The touchscreen works always. Occastinally the pointers come back for a while. So far I have tried:- Updated everything possible from Lenovo support page- Updated BIOS- Removed Synaptics driver 19.3.4.202. It reinstalled automatically.- Uninstalled every software I could- Disabled startup programs- Compared processes, memory and CPU from task manager when workin and during the issue- Reinstalled Windows- Checked that a bluetooth USB mouse works fine- There is no difference if running on battery or with a cord- Disabled either the touchpad or the trackpoint Seems to me like a driver issue. One anomaly in the drivers. The installed driver 19.3.4.202 date says 16.1.2018 but the support page gives the date 8.2.2018 for the same version.

Hello,My touchpad and TrackPoint stoped working after installing the 8/30/18 Synaptics driver from the t480 driver downloads. Before that, i had installed build 18204 from the Windows Insiders skip ahead and noticed that the TrackPoint did not work, but the touchpad did, so i decided to go install the newest drivers. Low and behold now both devices do not work. I took the issue to a large Tech Support discord found here: https://discord.gg/B8P97FhThe person helping me could not find a solution and pointed me to the Microsoft Community discord serverThe Microsoft Community server did do or say anything about my issue so i moved onto https://support.microsoft.com/After starting a thread on there I got help from someone, but all of the solutions given to me did not work, my ms answers thread is here: httpsbit.ly2LNnTf7 At this point, after installing or reseting windows at least 5 times, this is no longer a Microsoft problem, so i decided to come here.Everything after this point is happening on a stable public release of windows like version 1703 or 1803, not an Insider buildNote that the Touchpad has not worked on public version 1803 & 1703, and does not work on Insider builds 17723, 17713, & 18204 so far. Even with the propper drivers installed, any and all touchpad input is not registeredWindow as seen here, but even though it says the touchpad is on the touchpad does not workAfter seeing that Settings is lying to me, I decide to check device manage...
