710-14IKB - BIOS, firmware, and UEFI updates

Q: 710-14IKB - BIOS, firmware, and UEFI updates

710-14IKB with WIndows 10 Pro.I just wanted to post back on my experience with the update mess that accompanied this laptop release. Until 15 minutes ago, I was running on BIOS v2.01 but Windows showed that something wrong with the driver for 'Lenovo UEFI System Firmware 1.28' in device manager. Following Windows' suggestion I let it search for an update. It said the one currently installed is the best. In 'Devices and Printers' I let Windows 'troubleshoot' the laptop. It said the same thing but offered to reinstall the same drivers. After a reboot, I still got the same warning about the Firmware 1.28. Then I noticed that a newer BIOS version was available (v2.03). I installed the BIOS update and rebooted (with fingers crossed). After the reboot it STILL showed an issue with the Firmware 1.28 BUT after letting it reinstall again the error went away!!! So it looks like they are tied together. the Firmware reinstall didn't work until I had BIOS v2.03 installed. What do *I* take away from all of this?Lenovo really needs to work on its QA. Just booting up any one of these laptops with v2.00 or earlier BIOS would have shown anyone who isn't deaf that it's NOT ready to ship. Then we've got this firmware-BIOS-driver dance to get everything working properly without errors. My guess is that Lenovo performed little to no time testing when the new (IKB) versions came out, relying on the same drivers and firmware that worked for the old (ISK) model. Note, for those who are using Win 10 Pro with Bitlocker on the boot drive, you will need your recovery key after the BIOS upgrade. So, after WAY MORE firmware/BIOS/driver updating than I should have had to do, I now have a laptop without driver or BIOS issues. I hope this helps.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi There,

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

Any ideas? I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Thank you so much.

Hello, Title says all,  I updated recently to the latest uefi using the official installer, no problem there, all works fine within windows, however if i try to boot from an alternative device it fails and i presume it restarts, then loads win10. As i wanted to investigate further, i entered uefi/bios pressing F2 key (i have the Fn disabled) and, after less than 15-20 seconds tops it crashed the uefi interface and rebooted. I disconnected all USB devices from the unit and tried again, to no avail. I will try with the HDMI cable off also, but before there were no issues if the hdmi cable was connected - there was no output to the tv (as i presume that is a function controlled in windows), but no crash either. Furthermore, battery was full and laptop plugged in the power outlet. This is a pretty important bug (hope the term is correct), because if i ever need to restore/reinstall windows i can not boot from usb. Finally, i ran all the tests in the Lenovo Diagnostics app and the result was 0 errors, so i presume the problem can be isolated to the uefi hardware or software. Thanks in advance for the solution.

Upgraded Video Card from GTX 560 Ti to GTX 1060 Strix, machine boots but no video output or just black/blank screen.

Did a bit of online research and realize that two ways of fixing this
1. Change PCI setting to Legacy in BIOS/UEFI
2. Update to latest BIOS.

I decided to try and update BIOS to latest BETA (13w) using @bios from Windows. Everything went ok, reboots fine and still does now with Windows loading no problem, BUT i can't get to BIOS/UEFI???

All i get is the UEFI empty blue screen, no menus/options, just blank screen...

So i thought maybe i can reverse back to previous BIOS from windows but program wouldn't allow this. I tried sticking BIOS file in USB but the problem is i can't get to BIOS.

I Have tried running backup BIOS as board has two, but still same problem.

A few months ago I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Small Form Factor desktop computer. It has Windows 7 Professional preinstalled.  I am thinking of updating to Windows 10. My M73 has a regular BIOS.  Can it be changed to UEFI, and would there be an advantage in doing so?Also, I am planning to install an SSD and move the OS to the SSD and use the HDD for extra storage. I think this would be a significant improvement to the system speed and faster boot up.  I have done it on older desktops I own.Thank you in advance to anyone with good advice.

I bought a Lenovo
It has an UEFI firmware associated with Windows 8 OS protecting it by secure Boot feature.
When i boot in recovery mode i could see an option saying about UEFI software/hardware.

I used GParted and deleted ALL its partitions.
I installed 8 again with my partitonign.
No UEFI present there and no option on the recovery menu as before.
How can i re-associate UEFI firmware with Win8 OS as it was when i bough it?
What's the reason of UEFI existance anyway? In what ways can it be usefull?

A:UEFI firmware associated with Windows 8

To have the options to enable Secure Boot, you need to do a UEFI install from UEFI-capable media (DVD, FAT32-formatted USB key, UEFI-compatible PXE network boot) onto a machine with UEFI enabled. If you installed from media that wasn't a DVD, FAT32 USB key, or a PXE boot from a UEFI-capable boot server, you actually installed in BIOS mode (the Compatibility Support Module, or CSM, is activated in the UEFI OS to allow this). Also, your partitions need to be GPT partitions, not MBR, so if you created MBR partitions during the installation (even if you installed from proper media and selected the UEFI boot option to do so) you still won't have a UEFI install.

From what you're seeing, you have a BIOS CSM install, not a UEFI install, so you've done something wrong (you might need to boot to a boot option menu on the Lenovo to select a "UEFI" boot option versus a normal one, for instance). And there are a lot of benefits to UEFI over BIOS (security being only one of them), and most of them relate to boot and runtime performance of certain components and drivers.

Hello ladies/gents. My issue is that my desktop can't access the Asus mobo UEFI Firmware. I've tried entering through two different methods, both displaying constant symptoms in graphical activity and operation. Following are the two methods I've attempted so far to achieve access:

1. Cold boot - when I built this thing last summer, I flashed the UEFI early on and haven't had a problem up until now. Splash screen always displayed with ASUS Logo. Now, instead of the splash, the monitor shows something along the bottom of what resembled, to my memory, something similar in that same area of the working logo. After that point, the screen remains black and I've waited for up to a couple minutes without noting any changes. I can restart the machine from here at my leisure using ctrl+alt+dlt and then Windows 10 will load shortly after.

2. Windows 10 boot - Through "advanced startup options", I was able to find a GUI button which instructs the system to restart and navigate directly to UEFI. Unfortunately, the same behavior as iterated above is exhibited.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did see one article that I didn't save mentioning that a possibly similar issue was solved due simply to reconnecting the SSD. I could try doing that just in case, but I'm definitely interested in knowing what could have even caused this issue. Can BIOS/Firmware be affected by other applications running in an OS? How can I get UEFI Firmware for MY XPS 8700?  I have the latest windows 10 Pro (64-bit) version and the primary disk is upgraded to GPT vs MBR.  The system now boots to EFI, but the F2 Post Key still takes me to the old Legacy BIOS.  There are so many great settings in the UEFI Firmware for my Inspiron 17 (5767) laptop that I'd like to have the same capability for my XPS 8700.

A:XPS 8700 UEFI Firmware

Short answer is you don't.  The BIOS/UEFI system is generally setup however Dell and the BIOS manufacturer want it to be.  Its also possible your laptop may have access to features or functions your XPS 8700 does not have, hence why its not there.

Hello all,
My system specs are the following: Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit UEFI Bios Phoenix BIOS version and drivers are updated, also confirmed by Slimdrivers. Samsung Series 5 ULTRA 530U4C-S02PT Also: It is an hybrid drive, 1TB HDD & 24GB SSD that is supposedly well installed (the laptop never been so fast after formating and installing windows 10 with express cache to take advantage of SSD hybrid boosting). Windows works like a speedster the only problem is the inaccessibility of BIOS, for example i want to enable the virtualization VT-X to install Oracle VM and i can't go BIOS to edit virtualization.
Problems: UEFI BIOS firmware settings boot dialog is inaccessible. Not working suggested fixes:

i) hotkeys Esc, F2, F4, F8 and F10 don't log in BIOS. Although safe mode, debug logging, etc are available. Disabling Fast Bios in the control panel > power management dialog doesn't do anything.ii) automatic repair seems to give an error, after the account is specified in the repair boot dialog it gives error.iii) recovery > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings Boot is not Visible.iv) EasyUEFI free only works with Windows 10 Home, not Enterprise (it would resolve the issue appropriately with the boot into UEFI option) Sources:
Cause (according to internet forums): i) Probably my uefi has Secure Boot Enabled and Fast Boot also, making the boot system almost instantaneous and rendering other boot scenarios blocked. Because system is only seeing the SSD drive as b... Read more

I am trying to update the UEFI firmware on this laptop as the version it came with seems to be having issues with many operating systems I try out on it. It hangs when booting with the latest version of Linux (4.8 as of writing) which means I am stuck with the LTS banch (4.4 as of writing) and it refuses to boot any other operating system I try out on it. For example, FreeBSD shows a jumbled, unreadable mess after getting past the boot screen. So I looked up the article on the HP website about updating the BIOS and, following the video instructions, I went to the HP Support page and downloaded the BIOS installer for my laptop and placed it on an old desktop I have running Windows (Vista and XP, I tried both). Does this model (from around 2010) have UEFI firmware? I don't see any indication that it does, with Windows reporting that the "BIOS Mode" is "Legacy." I don't see any legacy BIOS emulation switches in the BIOS setup either. But out of paranoia, could it be the case that it does have UEFI firmware, but I've caused it to be permanently in legacy emulation mode or something? Confusingly, the support website offers an enigmatically named "HP BIOS Update UEFI." Could it be that some update (which I haven't been able to install) changes it from one thing to another?

However, you can try the steps in this guide, Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 10, 8).  Please remember to return to this thread and mark 'Accept as Solution', if I have successfully helped you resolve the issue. I am having a perplexing issue after doing a clean install of Windows 8 on a 256GB SSD where I can not get into the "UEFI Firmware Settings" Tile in Advanced Options. Basically, when trying to enter the EFI/BIOS via: Settings in Charms / PC Settings / General / Advanced Startup / Restart Now / Troubleshoot / Advanced optons I do not see the "UEFI Firmware Settings" tile to get into the UEFI/BIOS!

My machine (which only has (1) hard drive) is an Asus N56VZ and came pre-installed with Windows 8 on the factory 750GB 7200rpm HDD. I cleanly reinstalled the OS on to a new 256GB SSD via an OEM copy on a disc and all seemed basically OK except that sometimes when getting to the Login screen it would freeze and the cursor would not be flashing, I could not enter my password nor shut down via the power icon on the bottom left of the screen. I would then have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. This freezing of the login screen would be intermitent where most of the time I could enter my password but maybe 20% or so of the time I could not log in.

Due to that bug I decided to securely erase the SSD and once again reinstall Windows 8 and now I have this issue where in the Advanced Options menu there is only (5) tiles/options present and not the usual (6) as the "UEFI Firmware Settings" functionality is now missing!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have tried changing the jumper pins from 1 and 2 to 2 and 3 for 10 sec to clear the RTC Ram in CMOS then returned then to 1 and 2 and tried rebooting...no change so i removed the battery and repeated the jumper pin swap then reinstalled the battery and still no change, cannot get passed press DEL or F2 to access the BIOS settings.
I even downloaded the latest BIOS and updater as shown and put them on a USB flash drive together and tried the Macrium Rescue disk, and still nothing happened and it will not open the BIOS maybe i got it all wrong ?
I was hoping someone here might know how to put it right, i am out of idea's and any help would be greatly appreciated.

After applying the update 7QCN41WW from Lenovo Vantage advice, the touch screen seem dead now. I've also updated all the drivers it suggested me. I can see the touch screen in the list of devices and followed all the guides possible on this forum like disabling/enabling the device, removing and rebooting. I even enabled the downgrade in BIOS and flashed the previos BIOS version 7QCN38WW (fortunately, all the installed versions are stored on C:\BIOS), but no luck! It works with the pen, but not with fingers. One other thing to consider - I've also updated some of the software that Lenovo Vantage suggested me as well as the drivers. I used to trust Lenovo - not something I'll continue to do........ Anything else I can try? It is still on the warranty but I cannot stay without a laptop for a month of "diagnostics" and have the drive wiped out after the service.

If the screen does not work, maybe you can try to buy a new one to replace.

Hello together, i have a problem with our System X3650 M4 Server, Machinetype Model: 5462G2G. I downloaded an imm and an uefi update file from the lenovo website.First i updated imm through the imm2 website remotly.Update did go as planned, i restarted th imm2 and after about 5 minutes the new imm2 was working an accessible,Then i tried to update the uefi bios from version 1.01 to 2.31 , also via the IMM2 -> Servermangement -> Server Firmware -> Firmware upgrade option.I Uploaded the new file lnvgy_fw_uefi_tce128i-2.31_anyos_32-64.upd, then started the upgrade process. It went through fine, and after the sucess information i was prompted to restart the OS.After 30 minutes, the server was still in System State = running in uefi mode. When i checked back to the server management -> Server firmware rab, it said UEFI Primary, Status pending, Version 2.31.Then i "powered off" the server, and restarted it 5 minutes later. All status boxes are green, but system status is still in "system running in UEFI " Mode, it wont start with the OS (VMware) Does anyone have an idea how to fix the problem. The Server also has a secondary bank with the old bios version  1.01 , how can i switch back to this backup BIOS? Many thanks in advance, i am getting a bit desperate here. The server should be operational tomorrow morning again.

Greetings, I need a help with back flashing my bios into previous state as I was not able to find any HID compliant touch screen driver on Device Manager once I updated to the latest BIOS which is 7QCN42WW.  My touchscreen on my Yoga 530 is currently not working and I have exhausted every other options (formatting/resetting windows, update drivers in Lenovo Vantage, Windows update & etc) and I think one of the reasons it behaves like this after the bios update which dated 19 July.  Can someone provide me with the older version bios for Yoga 530-14IKB?  Thank you.
