I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This morning I saw the latest Windows 7 updates on an old computer I have (A VM running in XCP-NG) to run an old version of Confluence Wiki but that's not really important.
After installing the updates and rebooting the VM is so slow that it looks frozen at times. I restarted it in safe mode to remove the updates but when I access the Windows Updates list from Programs and Features it shows "No updates installed."
Has anyone else seen something like this? I have backups of this VM so I'm working to restore from a backup and before you ask, I know - I have to update that Win7 machine to a more recent version of Windows.
Thanks in advance and best regards.

Running Internet explorer 7 , Firefox 3.5.18 and Vista Home Basic. Compaq Desktop computer.
Problem started this morning, couldn't turn on the PC. No power. Checked cords and plugs ,monitor would turn on ,printer worked so it's nothing to do with powerboards, sockets, electricity. Waited 10 mins and tried again. The pc powered up to the windows log in screen. I left it and came back 20 mins later and the light behind the power on/off button had gone from green to amber and the screen was blank. My initial thought was the PSU. I rebooted and got it working however Internet explorer wouldn't open but firefox would. I ran avg but could not open the home page to see the results of the scan. I closed firefox and tried to reboot but got an error message saying firefox was still running. I started the task manager only it wouldn't display, I could see the green icon only in the bottom toolbar. I couldn't see the taskmanager even though it was running. I powered down by holding in the on/off button for 10 seconds. Rebooted into safemode. I can run both browsers in safe mode. I downloaded spybot ,got updates and ran it and fixed the problems it found. I installed avira and ran it. It found 1 problem,
EXP/ms04-028.jpeg.A which was removed.
I was unable to get into windows update to get the online scan in either normal or safe mode. I'm not sure if the problem is a virus or not since after removing ms04-028 I still have the problem.

Howdy.

A couple days ago I got the ultradefraggerfraud (as Symantec calls it) on my old old Dell Inspiron Latitude D620 running XP Professional. I successfully got rid of it (as far as I can tell all was working properly) by using AntiMalwareBytes in safe mode followed by Ccleaner. Everything was running normally afterward.

When I went to bed and shut down the computer, it automatically installed updates from Microsoft. The next morning, when I turned on the computer which had been working fine before, I got the black screen and blinking cursor. I cannot get into safe mode at all. Nothing happens when I hit f8 or f1 after turning on. All I get is the black screen and a loud beep whenever I hit any keys.

I can get into Setup, but I don't know what to do there (if anything).

Rather than just give up and reinstall Windows XP, I thought I'd try to see if anyone here can help. Since the laptop was working fine before Windows Updates, it makes me think that perhaps there's a simple way (or at least some way) to fix this. I really don't want to have to reinstall from scratch if I can help it. I'm convinced the Windows updates had something to do with this.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

A:Can't get Win updates or get into Safe Mode

No need for follow-up or help with this issue. It's not a malware problem. I had corrupt and missing files causing my problem. I worked with the Microsoft support team, and they helped me find the problem. Unfortunately, we couldn't get all the missing files. So, they are going to help me upgrade to Win 7.

I must say that they are rapidly changing the image of Microsoft from being an unresponsive software company to a customer focused company. I have never gotten such great service from any vendor, and at no cost to me. These guys went the extra mile for me. They were very responsive and skillful. And they are a Microsoft overseas outsource team. Forget what you heard about outsourced teams. They speak better English than some of us in the USA...very skillful and a job well done. :-)

Acer 5252 - auto-processed Win7 Home Prem (64 bit) updates. System started running slowly - figured it was from some large games so deleted them and defragged - system progressively worse - no viruses detected. Started getting error when trying to CtrlAltDel to get to task mgr to see what processes were running - error was "The logon process was unable to display security and logon option...". Reboot brings up Windows with no errors but takes 5-10 min for anything to start, and then hangs again. Can only shut down with power button. Starting in Safe Mode (w/ or w/o Networking) works but restore points are missing, so can't revert (I had plenty of room so not sure why the old points were deleted).

Dragged out my old Acer 6530 - Win7 Home Prem (32 bit) - haven't used it since around Jan so it was several updates behind. Worked fine until Windows updates applied - then same behavior as the first laptop. Was able to revert back to prior Windows and problems were gone.

I've seen other people complain about the CtrlAltDel issue in the past, but not sure why it's hitting me now, especially on both 32 bit and 64 bit. I couldn't say definitively that was the only change on the 5252, but it was the Win update was the only thing changed on the 6530 last night.

I know there are security updates I need to put on, but I also need an operational laptop! Any ideas? I can't d/l any utilities on the problem laptop. I can run TSG SysInfo if you want ... Read more

I've been working on my father's computer (an HP pavillion zv5000), and realized that he had some Windows XP updates to be installed, so I decided to download them. What I didn't realize at the time was that he hadn't installed any updates in almost 2 years (though Automatic Updates appear to be enabled). When I rebooted after the installations were complete, I could not start in Normal Mode.

When starting normally, I get a black screen with white writing saying that
there's been a problem with the computer (can't remember word-for-word), and gives me the option to start in safe mode, safe mode with networking, and another safe mode. It also offers to start up with the last settings that worked, or normal mode. When I try to boot up in normal mode, it sends me back to that same screen, and likewise when I try to boot with the last settings. Now it only works in Safe Mode.

I'm not really sure what's happened, and if it's related to the updates or if it could be a virus (I got a similar screen when my own computer had a virus a few years ago). I'd appreciate any and all help!

Thanks in advance

Hi, just wondering if I'm the only one to have noted that MS offers to install pending Windows Updates on the Safe Mode login screen in an identical fashion to normal mode.

...er.. did you notice the inconsistency?

Situation: Set Windows Updates to notify, not download. Require password to log in. With pending windows updates, go to safe mode. MS use exactly the same screen as in normal mode, including the notification of updates and instruction to go to PC Settings to install them.

...er.. but it's Safe Mode... please sir, I haven't got an internet connection...

However, when I try to run my laptop in Safemode I get a blue-screen message about there being a known virus on my system, my Automatic updates are blocked and my web browsers (Mozilla, IE) occasionally crash.

HI all...

I had my computer in storage for 7 weeks (on a boat being shipped back to US from the Middle East) and just got it unpacked a few days ago.

It started normally (a BIG relief) then wanted to do updates...48 of them!! So I started the update process but after the updates it will not boot...not normally, not to safe mode. The PC ran a CHKDSK on its own but couldn't boot after the CHKDSK.

I did manage to get Startup Repair to run once and the machine restarted to the Windows splash screen then that disappeared and now all I get is a black screen with a mouse pointer which I can move but nothing to point it at.

I cannot get to Sys Restore, safe mode, AV programs, etc.

I DO have a brand new Win 7 disk I got in Dubai a few months ago after having a tech there rebuild the machine with a new HDD and more memory...but it says "OEM System Builder Pack intended for system builders ONLY"...I suppose I could do a clean install with that and I also have a complete backup on an external drive that I made just before leaving Dubai...butI don't want to do that unless I have to.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

However, I tried to restart using the last configuration that worked (which someone said I should try), and now I can't load at all; I don't even get this error screen. When I try to load with safe mode, it loads up to muy.sys and then nothing happens. I have not installed anything terribly recently, and I unplugged all the stuff in my USB drives to see if that would fix it. No luck.

Does it boot when you choose "Normal" mode? If not, using "force" to boot to normal mode will make it completely unbootable, right?

You will need to fix whatever the problem is first.

How did this happen? Were there any recent updates or installations? Did you damage the system with any registry cleaners or "optimizers" of some kind? Was anything possibly important recently removed? Were there any problems or symptoms before this happened?

HP Pavillion dv6500t laptop
Vista Home Premium

I had my laptop out and was scanning a few articles today when it turned off. I assumed the battery died so I plugged it in, and restarted it. The thing wouldn't get into windows though. It showed the opening page (push <F#> for stuff page) then went to loading windows vista, then the screen turned black, and Windows never booted up. normally it will blink black for a few seconds and then load up, but it never loaded. I tried multiple times, no success.

then I pushed F8 to go into advanced option and tried to boot using last known good configuration, and had no success. Tried it a couple times with no results. Then I hit F2 and did a RAM memory test, passed. Tried to boot into safe mode, and it keeps stalling on the same spot. It loads driver CLASSPNP.sys then crcdisk.sys and just stalls, and I have to turn it off. Hangs up on that same spot every time.

I'm currently running a hard disc check (eta 94 minutes), but I've run out of options for fixing this thing. I've lost my recovery discs I burned when I got the laptop, so I don't have that option readily available atm (though I know someone who may have a set available later next week). Since the last restart, I've installed nothing. I updated my drivers and flashed the BIOS about 3-4 restarts ago, and its worked fine since then, so I don't think its a driver issue, but not sure. If anyone can help, I'd be most appreciative

After a brownout during which my battery backup failed, my computer lost power. On bringing it back up, I can start my computer in safe mode and safe mode with networking, however attempting to start it up normally will display my normal icons and desktop, and then the taskbar, start menu, and all normal functions of windows such as right-click menus and ctrl+alt+del functions seem to hang. ctrl+alt+del instead eventually shows a message that it failed to display the related security options and suggests a restart using the power button.

I need to find the source of this issue and repair it so that I can run windows normally again. Sadly, I do not possess system recovery points to roll back to, and I don't have a system repair disk of any sort.

a friend of mine has a Dell desktop PC (now out of warranty), he had a virus from Facebook that has stopped most of his software connecting to the internet or even install new software, everything has been tried to sort it out, he didn't make a back-up disc of Vista & he has lost the sticker with the Microsoft code, so the last resort seems to be to get a copy of Windows 7 & install that, as he can only get his PC to work in Safe Mode is it possible to install Windows 7 via Safe Mode on a PC that is virus-ed up ?

thank you

A:[SOLVED] can windows 7 install from safe mode ?

If he has his data backed up, He can install by booting from the win7 disc, deleteing partitions and installing.

Otherwise, see if any of this helps:

If you have the Dell System restore ( not all Dells do ) you can use that and you will not need a install CD

If not, You can get a reinstallation guide specific to your Dell here

Hey guys, I have been reading around and posted a bit on reddit and still no solution, although it seems like it should be simple.

2 weeks ago tuesday my work laptop had regularly scheduled windows updates that everyone loves to see right before they shut down. the next day it began with the circle of death after 1-3 min after start up, sometimes upwards of 30 minutes of functionality. but eventually the circle of death comes and i can't click on anything, however the mouse will still function.

i have gone back to every restore point possible and still get the freezing. i have updated/ran MSE in safe mode as well.

It's not a huge deal if I have to reformat, I just really feel like the solution shouldn't be that hard.

Anyways, thanks for your time.

Oh boy.

There was a thunderstorm last night, so I hibernated the Windows 7 x64 computer, then switched the back power switch, then unplugged it to be safe rather than sorry.

This morning, I turn the computer on, attempt to restore from the hibernation, and get DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen mentioning ndis.sys. So it reboots and prompts me to delete the previous session. I say "fine go for it". Windows boots to a blank screen. No mouse, no HD activity, caps lock light doesn't respond.

So I look up the error and find it is about the onboard network adapter. I turn it off in bios, try to boot to windows, no change. Still blank after "starting windows".

I try startup repair. Blank screen. I try safe mode. Blank screen with mouse that doesn't move.

I did a memtest with another boot disk I had that didn't find errors, and tried bootiing to a disc that contained Windows XP. From there I ran chkdsk on all of the drives, and it fixed errors in "uppercase file". (googled that and it said it is inconsequential). I tried to replace ndis.sys with an older version while I was there, but the file was super protected. I went into Disk management, and found my boot drive wasn't the active partition, so I set it to Active (dunno if this was good or bad).

Next boot, tried a regular boot, it said BOOTMGR is missing.

Popped in Windows install disc, there was only one option for me at this screen . It went into "starting wi... Read more

Did this machine have Vista or Windows 7 on it before you had this problem?

With the Vista and XP selection in your posted image, I would say that you installed Vista, on a XP machine as a second OS.

Bottom line, if this is a Windows 7 machines, you need to get your Windows 7 DVD and rebuild the machine.

Background: Have had a few failed boots recently, but ignored these as XP would boot up fine after pressing reset. Had a power failure (OK, OK, I switched it off at the wall by mistake as it was shutting down) - since then, can't boot.

Situation now:
It gets as far as the Window XP logo with the blue blobs scrolling and then restarts. Sometimes I get the "Overclocking failed..." error, sometimes a CPU temperature failure message. Can't start in any of the safe modes, can't start with last good config, can't start normally.

Tried repairing / recovering using the XP disc, but it didn't recognise my Windows install on my C: drive. It only recognised an old install on my D: drive. Cancelled the recovery. Went into XP set up, which discovered the C: drive but said it was empty and couldn't recognise the format (FAT or the other one N-something something). Booted up in old D: drive XP set-up (successfully) and managed to save my personal files onto a memory stick.

Please help!

Evening all,

I'm having a weird issue concerning Windows 7 Home Premium, running SP-1, 64-Bit Edition. To fully explain what's happening, please note that I will state everything that happened leading up to the issue to better portray my problem.

This morning I woke up and the first thing I always do is switch on my PC to check email and to have a quick chat with my friend who lives In Australia before it get's late over there. My PC was on, running S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Call of Pripyat via steam at the time, whilst still talking to my friend in Australia. Whilst typing to him, my system locked up mid sentence.

I left it for 15 minutes, got Coffee to wake up, still froze.. I had no choice to manually switch it off via the Power Button on the Tower. When I switch the tower back on, I had no Display on the screen. Now, this isn't actually the problem, I've fixed this kind of issue on a friends PC before and knew straight away my Memory Modules had just died. I removed the RAM, switched on, waited for the long Beep to confirm my Mobo was still breathing.. Placed one Module back in, black screen, tried the other etc etc.. Simple fix, get my spare RAM that I saved from an older build, stuck them in, powered up.

At this point I had to fix a corrupt winload.exe (Or similar) likely due to me having to turn the power off manually.. I hit the Recovery Console, let Window's do it stuff, corrupt file repaired, hello desktop..Just to confirm it wasn't a o... Read more

Hmmm, It seems I've just resolved my own issue.

I didn't realise but I seem to have replaced my 4GB (2x 2GB) with a mixed pair, although they both worked fine at first. I've removed one and replaced It with It's partner, now the PC seems to work fine. I'm typing this post from It, so, so far so good.

It was to my understanding Memory Modules worked fine in a mixed pair, the only downfall being they would be as fast as the slowest module?

Either way, issue resolved.

Hi there,

I have a laptop here that will not boot into anything. When booting into Windows XP it will hang at the progress bar screen. When booting into Safe Mode it hangs at Mup.sys. When trying to boot off a Windows disc it will start loading the drivers and then I'll get a STOP 0x7B error. I have slaved the HDD in another machine and removed all viruses, run several chkdsk's and also replaced the Mup.sys driver. Still the same thing happens. I have also tried another HDD and tried to just boot from the Windows XP disc again and the same thing happens.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer was working like a dream and has been for about a year now, when yesterday I booted up after running Windows update, like always, logged on like normal, only to see a blank screen with only my mouse cursor. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctrl+Shft+Esc work to bring up the Task Manager. I am able to boot into Safe Mode just fine, but of course unable to uninstall the Windows updates to the .NET framework.

I have tried System Restore several times now, both from the Safe Mode and from the start-up recovery options accessed via F8 upon system startup. From the same menu, I have attempted Startup Repair but alas, Windows does not detect any problems (go figure, right? ).

I have ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check if my hardware was going bad, and upon completion, it rebooted, once again, to a blank screen after being prompted to log in. Mouse works, nothing else does. Upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I am greeted with the following message after waiting roughly 5 minutes:

"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

^Pressing ESC makes the message disappear along with my mouse, so that I am staring at a completely blank screen.

This is my wife's laptop. The problem started recently, about a week ago When she starts the laptop, often (but not always) there is the hp logo, and then the screen goes black. It does not always happen, and sometimes it happens when the laptop has not been used for a few hours.

The screen seems to wrok okay in safe mode, bit has problems in regular mode. The laptop is about 4 years old, came with Vista, but now has Windows 7 premium home edition. I reinstalled windows 7, but the problem has not been resolved.

Grateful for your advice. Should this laptop be discarded? Repairs are quite expensive in Switzerland, and rather than spend good money on an old laptop, I would prefer getting a new one, if an easy solution can not be found. HP G60-235DX Windows 7 (32 bit), 3GB RAM, plenty of free HD space.
