XP Total Corruption?

Q: XP Total Corruption?

Hello everyone!

I am here today with yet another XP problem, but I am sad to say this is not your average run of the mill registry corruption.

Background:
During an architectural rendering - my apartment's power went out - immediately shutting off my computer. Upon resetting the circuit breaker and rebooting, I was mortified to discover my computer would not boot at all. (I think it is important to note prior to the power outage - my computer was freezing periodically, {besides other applications, utorrent would always make it freeze.})

After reboot, when it comes to the screen that gives you several boot options (safe mode, last known good... etc.) any option I click won't work and it simply freezes until I force shut down.

I tried repairing windows XP but during the installation it says something in the nature of "cannot find original windows installation, please contact sys..."

I successfully loaded up a BartPE bootable windows - but the OS could not detect my hard drives (the drives are just empty.)

*I suspect my hard drives died

I have windows installed on a data drive, and I have another 2 500gb hitachi drives raided together. (Not the raid setup that mirrors - the one that screws my career over)

What can I do to recover my data? Is there any external enclosure that I can get or some way of repairing windows through BartPE even though it doesnt read c: drive? Midterm presentations are around the corner and I cannot afford to pay for data recovery (1 tb. = $2000.00)

Preferred Solution: XP Total Corruption?

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

You have a Raid 0 setup and likely had a Bios crash so you need someone to set your Bios up for Raid again and then it might actually just boot up OK (provided you haven't messed things up too much).

I would suggest a shop.

I've previously posted for help under "Performance & Maintenance". I thought it would be more appropriate to ask for help here.

I believe I've a corrupt file system/registry. The windows explorer hangs a lot. I've a hard time accessing files on the hard drive. Ran Malwarebytes, NOD32 online scanner. It's all clean. SFC doesn't run.

So, I've run SFCfix.exe & attached the most recent version of SFCfix.txt & CBS.zip.

I've attempted some repairs by running Windows Update Readiness tool, looking at CHECKSUR.log, by downloading the individual updates mentioned in the log, placing them in C:\windows\temp\checksur\packages folder, and running WURT again & the summary of checksur.log reads.

Up untill today my PC has been working a-ok. I first encountered the problem when i was palying a online mmo. After a couple of hours playing i entered a world and some graphical corruption occured where green pixels seem to appear in bands where the lighter colours where. After a short while the pc locked up,with loads of green pixels appearing and the last split second of sound caught in a loop.Nothing worked, mouse keyboard, even the lights for numlock, scroll lock and capslock did not respond to the keys being pressed.it has happened almost every time i tried a game since then.

I rebooted my pc and it was fine untill i was loging into the pc,where more of the same graphical corruption occured, when i logged in after a short while the pc froze on my desktop and hr monitor lost signal.after a few seconds it came back on an a message appeqred in the corner by the toolbar saying Kernel driver 258.96 had failed but had been recovered, his happened a few times. Windows works perfect in safe mode and i updated the graphics card drivers to try and resolve this but it did not work,i am posting this off my iPod so pardon the bad spelling, will upload a picture or video tomorrow wih more info if needed.

I unstalled Comodo Time Machine after I realized I had made a mistake in setting it up, and then when I tried to re-install it (there was no option to go back and rectify my mistake), it told me the software was "already installed on my computer" and would not re-install.
I used Revo Uninstaller to remove the program, then CCcleaner to tidy up, and also went thorough my registry with CCleaner and manually checking for breadcrumbs and stuff CCleaner tends to miss.

BTW, specs:
I am running XP Professional Edition, service pack 3.
I use Rising Anti-Virus (never had a problem).
I've also tried Glary Utilities (desperate) to no avail.
CTM still thinks it is installed on my computer. I am sure there are little lurking elements somewhere where I can't find them with my limited skills. When I startup, there is a CTM splash screen detailing how it is "creating a restore point," although no other related files to this can be found, as far as my digging has shown me. Additionally, I have tried re-downloading the program and reinstalling, to no avail. Still tells me the program is already installed.

I would like to get rid of the splash screen, and remove all remaining parts of the program. This make be as simply as deleting the logo file from my system, but since I like to run a clean machine I want to make sure to scrub the rest of the traces, if there are any. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello,I recently encountered what I believe to be a spyware/trojan problem on my laptop which is running Windows XP. The problem started about a week ago when a fake security alert came across my desktop saying "Attention! System has encontered a potentional problem..." I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes Anti-Maleware (I already had these programs installed). These both removed a number of problems. I also have McAfee anti-virus software running. I also ran a scan with this. As of now the fake desktop alerts are gone, however, when I run a Google search and click on a result, I am redirected to some random website. the line value for each item is a textbox

HOW can I correctly total the sum of all items into the reporrt footer???

The software directed me to a microsoft web siite to upgrade windows components (see below). I then tried upgrading the Windows components from Microsoft web site, but the upgrade button is grayed out - don't know if this means no update available or means invalid windows. Hiya

First post ever

Straight to the point.....

I have an Acer travelmate 3300 and all of a sudden on startup, in windows, or even when running the recovery Console or in Safe Mode, the system will blank out e.g. the screen will just go blank and the HDD light will completely disappear (the light that shows HDD activity)

Everything else is on including all the power and the motherboard Fans.

I've taken the drive out and ran a scandisk and repair on it and it says that it fixed some bad sectors (about 32k) but I put it back into the laptop and i still get the problem

i did get blusscreen once and it had the following information.

Page_Not_found_In_Non_paged_Area

It then went on about Win32k.sys and then

if anyone has had this problem, or know the answer that would be great

It's been driving me nuts all day

So heres the rap,

i have used the same install of windows XP for around 2-3 years without a format. ive updated all pc components in that time but kept the same install. of course i used all the relative driver cleaners before hand to reduce any clashes. I always kept the system clean and virus/ spyware free. never missed a beat until...

A few days ago i left my computer on all day whilst at work only to come home to a moniter screen which displayed 'no signal detected' so decided to reset it. then windows loading screen came on and near the end of the loading phase BSOD. i decided to boot in every other mode all followed with BSOD. i have never come across this before in my experience. I am very desperate to recover a few files within my documents including uni work and photos amounst other things <1gb in total id say.

to rule out hardware failure i tried booting it with another computer but BSOD still follows. it must be a software issue. or perhaps the hard drive it self?

i also threw the HDD in an external hard drive box and tried to load it as a mass storage device it does show up however i cant access it because it says it needs to be formatted. also windows displays the drive as empty instead of partially full which it should be.

any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.
im sure this comes up alot but it does teach a valuable lesson to back up!

thanks,

kim

A:HDD corruption

Hello Kimbo
I would suggest that you d/l the tools from the website of the company that made your drive.
Most major drive manufacturers offer such tools.
Some are great... and highly recommended.
Not all are fully compatible with hardware from other makers.
SeaTools may be useful across makers, but I cannot say that it may be used with all.
That is why I suggest going to the maker of your drive.
(When I changed drives, I found that the WD utility was better for my new WD drive, and the Toshiba utility better for the old drive).
Again, YMMV.

Run both S.M.A.R.T. and Long tests, especially the Long.
This will let you know if the drive is bad, and (hopefully) whether anything can be recovered.

I'm having massive corruption issues running windows 7 ult 64. It regularly fails to boot and gives random bsod messages (Memory Managment, dll errors etc.).
I recently RMA'd the HD after it showed errors on the HD diagnostic utility (even after a complete wipe ) I also RMA'd the motherboard but it didn't change anything. At this point I have my eye on the wireless card (Rosewill RNX-G300EX PCI card). My thought is that (either through driver or hw fault) its causing some corruption in downloaded files, namely system updates. I also regularly get errors trying to open zip and executable files.

I am new to this forum and have a new computer and a new W7 pro 64bit
When I initially turn on computer the screen displays an illustrated information title of the gigabyte mother board,, then goes to a black screen with white lettering that flashes on briefly and appears to list the components of the system.
Why I believe there could be some corruption is that a flight sim game Rise of Flight is refusing to load. When i go to the start it tells me -"connection to master server was temporaily lost. check internet connections" All other sites are working. This change in Windows display occurred about the same time access to the game was denied which is why I I feel some problem has arisen within W7

A:possible corruption of W7?

Do you initially see something like this:

Then (or now) something like this:

?

The 1st is Gigabytes Splash screen. The 2nd is the BIOS screen. Usually, if you disable the splash screen, you will see the BIOS loading screen (which I prefer).

For me it was either/or, are you saying you now see one, and then the other? I won't be able to test it, but it's possible the BIOS is taking longer to load now and so the splash screen ends before the BIOS screen (which loads "behind " it) is finished. Does the boot take longer now? Perhaps the BIOS is hanging while your PC searched for a device? You could have a device (HDD, Optical drive) issue.

If not, this may just be a coincidence and you just need to troubleshoot your game issue. I don't think the OS itself is "corrupted". Have a look here and see if you don't find some help:

You may find your answer or an update to correct this. Looks like you must have a connection to server to play.

so where to start, well first of all i need to know how to repair a corrupted version of windows 7. I have two hard drives atm one with windows 7 working and one with the corrupted version on it. The main issue here is when my friend was fixing my computer he didnt format the hard drive with win 7 on it properly and i now have about 500mb's if im lucky on that hard drive. So id like to know how do i go about fixing the other hard drive with the corrupted windows 7 on it and no i cant reformat the hard drive and reinstall windows on it since he lost the disk briefly after doing so and it may not have been all that legal.

In the end of it all id like to get windows 10, how i figured about doing this was to get my old hard drive working with win 7 on it, boot up using that then install win 10 on it since it would have enough space to get the files which my current one cant.

If anyone else knows a better way of eventually getting windows 10 as my os without all this trouble that would amazing, i just want a hd with space on it

uhh i dont know what other information to give, i'm fairly certain its the windows files that are corrupted since i can still run my old games from it and not the hard drive.

tl;dr win 7 corrupted, got new hd with win 7, didnt format correctly, ****, want win 10 but not enough hd space, help get meh win 10 somehow by fixing corrupted hd or black magic

ill be out for the next two hours kinda bad time to post this but oh well

I am a mac user and I own a site that has downloads available for purchase. They are zip files with psd's in them. I have two windows 7 clients who can download the entire file and unzip it and everything show up except the psd files.

I was wondering if anyone could shed some light as to why this is happening.

Thanks!

A:zip corruption

Welcome Paigeypar to the windows 7 forums.

There is the possibility that the .psd files that you created are not compatible with the intel version of photoshop.
or, your zip program is only zipping up the fork files and not the data files. Not being a mac person, I do remember from my mac days that the mac uses two files to make a pair, one being the resource fork and one being the data fork. Most pc's ignore the resource fork and only use the data fork.

Hope this helps

I'm just looking for a second "fresh pair of eyes" to comment or suggest a fix for a dilemma I'm having with my WIN XP PRO system. I'm working with a mS MVP on another board, but it's going stale and I'd thought I toss this over here and see if anybody has a suggestion. Approximately 3 weeks ago, when i started Internet Explorer this error message came up: In the above example, substitute sys restore, help center, sys info, management console etc To cut to the chase, as I tried to solve this error, it turns out several of the windows components return this error also even in safe mode, thus ruling out using system restore. sys restore is dead, sys info is dead, mmc, helpctr etc.. However, the computer works with my Corel Draw! program, the internet works with mozilla or Firefox. Things I've done is uninstalled add ons in Internet Explorer, dumped adobe, corel draw, ran hijackthis and run virus scans.. Here's a funny thing: Windows hot fix and security updates come on down the line and install no problem. But when you try to run sys restore you get that "* has encountered a prob and needs to close..." And of course Dr Watson has the same prob If there is an expert who wants to see the total history, here's the link:http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?t=23623 Nothing against Walter, just thought I'd ask if there is a fresh pair of eyes who might have a different opinion thanks all!!

Wow! They've done a whole pile more than I could! Since the mshtml error seems to be common with all events - I'd suggest reinstalling SP2 to "repair" IE6. Also be sure to get all the Windows Updates. If that doesn't succeed, then I'd go with a repair install of XP (it'll save your data and programs): http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmFWIW - here's a link to TrendMicro's online scanner that supports Firefox: http://uk.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/h...call_launch.php

fresh install of OS(Windows Vista) installed on 80 GB HD, and one of my 400 GB hard drives has crashed
what happened is that while i was downloading a file though firefox, firefox froze and could not be shut down(by task manager and by right clicking - close, and various other ways of trying to shut down the program) , so i reset the computer thought the start menu, now after a full re-install of the OS (vista ultimate) i have no access to the hard drive that has very super ulta important information, i've had a bad experience with data recovery programs that i still lost everything anyways, so i'm wondering if there is a way to rebuild the MFT with a free program so then i can access the hard drive in a whole, just like it was before the MFT got corrupt

the only things that were installed in the new OS were firefox, avast, and the raid drivers(that the crashed 400GB drive is NOT connected to)

User complained about Computer slowdowns and crashes when left alone.
I turned off startup programs and power options to always on with no screensaver.

They said they were using malwarebytes antimalware, so I did a quickscan to reporduce the results of the crash to get more info.

1hr 30min later the scan was in the Huiristics portion of the scan.

The user then used the bathroom and turned on the heater, turning on the waterpump and hitting the main breaker killing power to the computer.

Now 1 sec into windows booting "normally" it BSOD with:
Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disc defragmentation or backup

Safemode does the same thing.
I dont have a cable onhand attach their HDD to my laptop and run CHKDSK,
So I try a boot from a windows install disc intending to repair. Either the disc was scratched or the drive would not work on the CDR, but my drive at home plays it fine. Im thinking of going to install from USB or get a cable to CHKDSK from my laptop.

Im starting to think Im over my head, and am taking too long to finish.
Any help is appreciated.

You are headed in the right direction
0x24 indictes the NTFS file system and chkdsk /r should help.

I dont suppose that you can get to a command prompt?

As long as the bios is set to boot from the cd
I would try a few more times.
I have seen it take 6-7 tries before it will "hook up"

If the computer supports booting from a usb device that would be good.
If not you may need to hook it to your laptop to run chkdsk.

First, The computer will not respond to keyboard commands in the boot source menu. But, the keyboard works fine once windows is running. I tried a USB board and the standard keyboard port; got the same result with both.

Second, the update download notification shield, microsoft puts in on the task bar while downloading, never gets beyond 9%. Auto update is turned on and my fire wall, sygate, has never gotten in the way before.

Third, the internet connection service that can be turned on or off in the Services window, is not there, neither is there a network icon in the Network Connections window. But, my satellite connection to hughes.net is running fine and my Belkin router is sending strong signals to my router.

Fourth, System Restore will not restore to a prior configuration whether it is one saved 20 minutes before or ten days earlier.

I am running into a problem where my Windows XP keeps corrupting.

The first round after corruption, I used my windows installation disk and the repair option was not offered and the NTFS was gone, as if Windows disappeared. In an effort to salvage any data, I installed a new Hard Drive and then installed Windows XP again on the new drive; however within 2 days, this Hard Drive gave me the blue screen, which I couldn't see the error as it moved to fast and upon restart to repair the only option was to reformat.

Any idea what would cause this? I updated my bios for my ASUS P5n32e-sli as well as the chipset, but I am truly clueless as to what could have caused this.

This morning upon starting up, chkdsk found errors and did it's thing but at the end, gave me an error message, error unknown.

Any direction or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,I suspect I know what the answer is going to be to this question, but I'll ask anyway in the hope there is something I've overlooked. I have an ENVY17-J005TX (Windows 10) that has a corrupt display. Connecting to an external display via HDMI works intermittantly, and if it does work it only seems to output once the laptop has booted into Windows. I can't get PreBIOS (Windows key +B) or BIOS to display on the external screen at all. Laptop screen displays a randomly flashing white screen which appears to have information, but it looks to be displaying ghosted images of that information which is so out of focus it's more of a fuzzy grey box. When it gets to the Windows login screen it is displaying an image the same colour as the login in screen on the external monitor, but again it looks to be displaying ghosted images of the User/Login prompt which is so out of focus it's more of a fuzzy grey box.  On the occasions I have been able to get the external monitor to display the Windows login, only some of the keyboard works ('ENTER' mainly but their may be others). I have connected wireless keyboards, but they appear to work the same as the built-in keyboard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.RegardsGav

I noticed that the search engine is having the same problem when i type in it (i use google Chrome). The desktop gadgets are also corrupted the same way.
What can i do to fix it?
I use a Toshiba Satellite laptop.

A:What is the cause of this corruption in the taskbar?

You say this started a couple of days ago? Simple things first. Have you tried a system restore to a point before this started? What steps , if any, have you tried to fix this?

I would start with a malware/Virus scan for sure. Also a sfc/scannow wouldn't hurt. Or you could try rebuilding your icon cache, though I think its unrelated. (click on the links below for tutorials on how to do these)

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I have windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit with Media Center, etc. Lately I have been converting some videos to h.264 mp4 and noticed something strange. Some of my mp4 files that played fine previously suddenly stopped playing. After checking things out I
noticed that the ones that stopped playing have recent modified dates and are all over 4GB. I think some background process is adding metadata of some kind and corrupting the ones over 4GB. The modified dates seems to be like every 20-30 minutes
one file to the next. The mp4 files below 4GB are still fine (even though they have more recent modified dates). The ones over 4GB are all trash now. I did recently back these up and move them to a new folder watched by media center. I also may have played
them in media player. Anybody know of any process that automatically modifies mp4 files?

A:mp4 file corruption

I figured out how to repair the video files. Figured I'd post in case this happens to someone else
1. using a hex editor Find the "Xtra" atom (search for characters Xtra). Move to 4 bytes before this to get size of this atom and mark the Starting CUT Position. I see 00 00 00 A3 which in decimal is 163. We have to remove the 163 byte Xtra atom which includes
the 4 byte size before it's 4 byte Xtra name. So from Starting CUT Postion move out to the byte just before the 4 bytes size before the "mdat" atom. For large files the size before the mdat atom will be 00 00 00 01 becuase it's size is over 4GB. This marks
the ending CUT POSTION. If you count all the bytes you are about to cut, this should amount to 163 the size of the Xtra atom.

Within the Xtra atom we can see the following attributes that where added by windows thus corrupting the file.
WM/EncodingTime
WM/MediaClassSecondaryID
WM/MediaClassPrimaryID
2. Next we need to correct the size of the parent udta atom. Look at the 4 bytes before the udta atom. I see (00 00 01 03) hex which in decimal is 259. Subtract the size of the Xtra atom we just removed 163 giving 96 (00 00 00 60) hex . Paste the 60 hex
in the 4 bytes before the udta atom.
3. Finally we need to correct the size of the parent moov atom. The 4 bytes before the moov atom are (00 AF E4 1B) hex which is 11527195.
11527195 - 163 = 11527032 (00 AF E3 78)
I still don't know what wrote the Xtra atom but I assume what ever wrote it ... Read more

Hi

i'm reading TeraByte Unlimited ? View topic - W8 Corruption.

there is

Based on a number of reports, a quick search of the Microsoft forums, and testing, it's clear that Win8's new gimmick, called Fast Startup (hibernate on shutdown), is causing disk corruption. This occurs when partitions visible to Win8 are modified after shutdown (doesn't affect reboot). It appears that Windows does not clear its cache and remount file systems after resuming from hibernation. This "feature" is enabled in Win8 by default. We highly recommend you disable this new feature to prevent corruption to your partitions. Fast Startup can be disabled using BootIt BM 1.10 or higher via properties of the Win8 partition in Partition Work. You can also enable or disable this option in Win8:

the fix is
1) Open Control Panel.
2) Choose Hardware and Sound -> Power Options
3) Click on "Choose what the power button does" on left.
4) Click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable".
5) Remove the check mark from the "Turn on fast startup (recommended)" under Shutdown settings.
i'm running w8.1 pro 64
thanks
cheers

A:can w8.1 cause disk corruption?

Hi guys,

could you help me identify the issue here? I'll try and provide as much info as possible
/
don't know if this part is relevant but usually the first question to ask is 'what were you doing before it happened?' So this happened three days ago, the last thing i did was attempt to run MAME (arcade games emulator) for X-Men vs Street Fighter with an xbox 360 controller modded with arcade fightstick parts. The game crashed while loading and after restarting, the boot up screens look like this:

and i was unable to boot windows (i'm running 7) at all, it would freeze on the bootscreen with similar corruption lines across the screen. it also shows the vista bootscreen, The green bar instead of the hi-def glowing lights that form the windows logo. i am able to boot into safe mode but these red squiggly lines moving diagonally upwards to the right overlay the entire screen (taking a screenshot in safe mode does not reflect the lines, so i think it's a hardware problem.

subsequently i took my brother's laptop hdd out and attached it to my pc, it performs the same way, so i'm certain it's not a problem with my hard disk.

any help with indentification of the issue or solutions would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!

I was also told to reset my BIOS to its defaults. So i did when rebooting after running Driver Sweeper.

upon rebooting windows started a disk check. it was going crazy inserting Indexes and deleting files. i kinda freaked out thinking a virus might be deleting my files or something wrong was happening and i did the grand mistake of hard shutdowning down my computer by holding down the power button in the middle of a disk check. The main problem I have is that when my company boots up, it shows a message signalling me to replace the hard disk, as it is “bad”. This happens every time, and it happened back in October, to which I had fixed by my computer technician. However, there is actually nothing wrong with the hard disk. I have cleaned out all of the viruses I had previously and I remember the technician telling me that the viruses had damaged the boot record, along with the other, hidden stuff. I am not sure what he did, but I think he cleaned out everything (and I mean every single thing), not just reformatting, like rebuilding the partition tables or something. I have no idea. So I was wondering if anyone here could teach me how to redo everything, much like the technician.

Please keep in mind that I am running Windows 2000 Professional and have used the recovery console (I have tried the “fixboot” and “fixmbr” commands several times already).

I've posted this question on other forums and so far, no one has been able to help. I have an XP SP3 desktop, Time Warner cable modem, LinkSys WRT310N V2 router. I also have a Win7 laptop connected to the router.

From time to time, usually once a day, but sometimes, more often, and ONLY on the XP computer, I lose all network connectivity. This includes the net and local mappings. When it occurs, I cannot raise the router (or anything) via HTTP, even using IP addresses. I can, however, ping ip addresses. I've tried recycling the router, but nothing except rebooting the computer helps.

When it occurs, the Win7 laptop is OK. HOWEVER, I did find that when my cell phone uses my wireless router instead of the cell tower, it has the same problems.

WHEN the WIN7 laptop connects via wireless, it has no problems.

Other problems also occur: For instance, on this site, I get "invalid URL" messages. And just a few minutes ago, when I tried to view my blog, I got invalid URL "/..." but now I don't.

I've run various anti-virus apps; nothing is amiss.

This is my second router.

There's is probably nothing wrong with your computer. If you can't access the Router setup even after recycling the power, with all computers, then there is a problem with the Router or Modem. The computers that are wired, try replacing the cable. If it persists, eliminate the router for a test. If a direct connection to the modem test good all the time, then it is the cable to the router, or the router itself. Try updating the Firmware for the router. Or go to the live support chat for Linksys.
