How to solve T410 performance problems at the system level?

Q: How to solve T410 performance problems at the system level?

At my house we have two almost identical T410s, named KENTHINK and SUZY. SUZY has much worse performance than KENTHINK. At random times, it will grind away for a minute or more, and sometimes until it is rebooted, on some ordinarily easy task. I have tried all the usual performance tuning fixes (removing bloatware, malware, unneeded background processes, etc), to no avail. Also did hardware tests (memory, etc) and everything passed. So now I'm looking at reinstalling Windows on SUZY. Researching this option, I came up with the comparison of the two machines shown in the attached screen shots. (The screens are from the Windows 7 Pro System Information utility.) There are several differences that might be relevant:I've had several thoughts about what to try next. Each option raises some issues. For reference, see the attached comparison of the two machines shown in the attached screen shots. (The screens are from the Windows 7 Pro System Information utility.) The options and issues as I understand them are:1. SUZY has 4GB of memory, while KENTHINK has 8GB. So maybe add more memory?2. Can't do that, because SUZY has a 32-bit operating system, which I have read can only handle up to 3GB of memory. So maybe upgrade to a 64-bit Win 7 Pro system?3. Can't do that, because you can run a 64-bit system only if your processor is 64-bit enabled. KENTHINK has System Type: "x64-based PC"; SUZY has System Type: "X86-based PC". According to http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001121.htm, this means SUZY's processor is not 64-bit enabled. How can this be, given that they have identical processors (described on the System Info report as "Intel Core i5 CPU M 520 @ 2.40 GHz, 2400 MHz, 2 Cores, 4 Logical Processors")?4. Another difference is that SUZY's BIOS is dated 2010, whereas KENTHINK's is the latest one available, dated 2013. Might the older BIOS be why SUZY shows up as just a 32-bit machine? Would a BIOS upgrade turn it into a 64-bit enabled machine? And/or could upgrading the BIOS directly help performance? And if upgrading BIOS is a good idea, how dangerous is it if done by an amateur like me? Would be grateful for any help on any of these questions. ~ Thanks in advance~ Ken

Preferred Solution: How to solve T410 performance problems at the system level?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to figure out if the slow performance of my T410 (on certain apps - mainly Firefox and Quicken) could possibly be caused by an overheating problem that I know I have (because I sometimes get a "fan error" on startup, and because it is hotter to the touch that it seems it should be).  My speculation is that maybe the CPU has a temperature monitor, and when the temp gets too high it throttles down the CPU.  Is there any truth to that idea? ~ Thanks in advance~ Ken

A:Can overheating cause slow performance on a T410?

That is true.Your fan error means your fan is running slow, which would hurt cooling

Is there a chance do define two different audio levels?
I guess I am not the only one listening to music with my computer - so I'd like to avoid awkward and looooud system sounds while turning up my stereo...

is there a chance to do so? I know that apple has it, not sure bout win7...

A:Low system sound level, high music level?

I think I understand your question. I use powered partner speakers and in my audio controls for my sound card it has output levels and then and then my music manager has it's own. First I set my sound card at around 1/3 volume +- and then go to the mm and set a volume to around 1/2-3/4 full volume. Then at my speakers I adjust the volume to a clear but loud volume. Then going back to the mm I'll use it's volume only which is controlled off my keyboard and it seems to work well. You still will run into situations where things are too load or too soft and other than in your music files there really isn't much you can do about that, just be ready to ride your volume a little.

So....my computer is starting to slow down and I can?t figure out why. It runs smoothly for about four to five hours after I turn it on, but eventually the performance gets choppy. It?s most obvious when playing a YouTube video because the audio will stutter and freeze like crazy. The fix for this is restarting the computer; then everything is smooth for another four to five hours.

I have scanned for viruses and malware multiple times; there are none. I?ve brought up the Task Manager window and watched it like a hawk, but the only real difference is that when the issue is active, the CPU is spiking at 100% more frequently (if this helps, the spikes are the exact moments when the performance freezes up). All the programs act the same otherwise. I have installed extra RAM; it made my programs speedier but didn?t eliminate the problem. I upgraded to Windows 10; the issue remained afterward. It can?t be a hardware issue because it goes away when I restart the computer.

There's nothing different I do between the hours when the computer runs smoothly and when it runs choppily. In the background there are the usual Windows processes and ZoneAlarm as a firewall. There are currently 47 background processes, but the majority of them are constantly at 0%.

Firefox eats up a lot of memory when it's running, but it's not a problem with the extra RAM I have now. There have been times I've left the computer on all night with no programs running at all. Then w... Read more

Wow..... that ain't funny . I've never experienced this since I quit using Windows 98SE.

What kind of programs do you have running in the background? I'm sure it's not Windows that makes the pc turn slow. It must be a program or an app you've installed that is flushing your memory.

Did you encouter this problem right after the installation of Windows? Or did it occur recently? Try to figure out what you've installed since then and try removing those programs/ apps to see if it upgrades the performance of your pc.

Good luck with it!

Hello, yesterday I started having some major system problems. Google links were being re-directed to strange URL's and I started having problems with some software I use on a daily basis... open office, SQL Server Management Studio Express, and Visual Studio 2008. I attempted to fire up MalwareBytes Anti-Malware and was told the executable no longer existed. After some googling(clicking on links in google wouldn't work but cutting and pasting the URL's would) I was able to resolve this by following the instructions this thread: http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=29028. MalwareBytes found a number of issues which I cleaned up but the problem was not completely resolved. More googling led to some help on rogue security malware named "Security Guard." I followed some steps to attempt to fix this and again feel like I've fixed half the problem only. For example I learned that this malware overwrites your hostfile, I was able to unlock the hosts file and get it fixed back up and my web browsing is back to normal. But as I said, things are still bad. Current symptoms:Malwarebytes still reports two issues, a Vundo registry key and a security disabled registry key that are not getting fixed upon reboot.Windows Automatic Update service is being disabled every few minutes when I try to enable itMany programs I run daily and was running fine day before yesterday are fairly hosed... open office won't start at all, bringing up a ji... I upgraded my Lenovo Thinkpad T410 from 4GB to 8GB RAM a while ago. The new memory seems to work without a problem, but the battery has started acting up.

Sometimes the laptop won't start unless the charger is plugged in, even though the battery monitor says 98% full after starting. If the charger is pulled off after this, the laptop shuts down instantly.

Sometimes the computer does start without the charger plugged in, but it might randomly shutdown at some point, again instantly as if the battery had been removed while running.

Could this be somehow caused by the RAM upgrade? Or is it more likely the battery or the connection between the battery and the laptop is broken?

I just upgraded my T410 BIOS to 1.45; I don't recall the exact previous version number but I believe it was in the 1.30's. Since I've done this, two things have happened: the trackpad no longer works, and the Trackpoint is now very laggy/slow/jumpy; it looks like it only updates about twice a second. Here's a video of what it's doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzHL5ZI2TcM I'm using Windows 10 here in this video. The CPU load shown in Task Manager is very low, indicating it's not the computer itself lagging. Secondly if I boot the Windows 10 install CD, or an Ubuntu LiveCD, the same problem is happening, indicating that it's an issue with the laptop/BIOS itself, not with Windows. So far I've tried: - removing the battery/unplugging the laptop- disabling the trackpad/trackpoint in the BIOS, booting Windows, re-enabling it... I found this while searching on here for the same problem. Though it's a different laptop/BIOS, maybe it's the same bug? https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/UltraNav-Trackpad-stops-working-after-ne... Anyway the onboard Ultranav is now pretty much unusable on this laptop and I'm now stuck using an external mouse, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also, I attempted to file a support ticket except the Lenovo website is doing this. http://i.imgur.com/kNyUMcl.png

Hey everyone, I am facing some problems with my Lenovo Thinkpad T410. The screen acted as seen in the attached photo. I disassembled the laptop following the service manual, took out the LCD screen out of the cover, connected the screen again and it was acting the same, but system etc. started normally. I ordered a new screen on eBay and put aside the disassembled laptop waiting for the part to arrive. When it arrived, I connected the old screen just to check if the computer itself is still fine and there's where problems have begun. When I start the laptop, the cooling fan runs for a few seconds, then stops for 10s and starts to run again at high rpm. The screen doesn't work. The same is for the new screen. External screen connected via VGA doesn't find the signal. What's wrong, what to do?

Hi everyone!

I've been having issues with my computer lately (occasional skips where my video/audio freeze for a split second). So tonight I upgraded my BIOS.

The couple things I immediately notice with my limited experience are:
the cpu temp is very high
the cpu multiplier (if that's what it is) seems to be higher when in non-turbo. shouldn't it be the opposite?

These are with "use optimized defaults" set.

Also, strangely when I first boot up on the info screen it says that the CPU multiplier is 21 instead of the i7 920's default 20 like I have set in the BIOS. And then CPUz says it's 19....

My specs are the following:
i7 920
CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
EVGA 01G-P3-1158-TR GeForce GTS 250 1GB 256-bit DDR3

Thanks for any suggestions or thoughts!

Does anyone know if it's possible to either create a system level capability to connect to the internet or to make the internet available to all users of a Windows 2000 server.

The reason I want this is because we use McAfee anti-virus (company standard) and it logs on (and presumably tries to connect to the internet with) the "System" account and it is failing at presnet (presumably because it has no I/C configured).

Is it possible to move the user's folder and the programmes folder to another drive?

When I was using mac workstations, there is an app called location manager within OS X which allows you to move the location of a system specifc volume such as Applications or Users or such like to another volume, and the location manager changes all the necessary information like the entries in the reg and the like.

When you installed a programme it instantly pointed itself to the new location as all it saw was that the 'applications' folder was sitting on this volume.

IS there anything like this in windows 7 ?

A:Moving system level folders in W7

You can certainly move the folders at the c:\users\<account>\sub-folder level. Ive moved all those to another drive. If you choose one (say favorites) and right click and select properties, you'l see a location tab where you can move the folder to a new location.

As for program files folder, you can use regedit and search for "programfilesdir" but use that with caution.

I am trying to make a System level command prompt show up in the Context (right click) menu.

I have used the Ultimate Windows Context Menu Customizer to see if I can open up a System Command Prompt from the right-click menu. Here is my code that I used to make it show up in the context menu:
runas /user:HP\Administrator "C:\Users\____\Downloads\PSTools\psexec -hsi cmd.exe && /L /k pushd %L

If you notice, I use the Psexec tool to start the System Level command prompt. And the reason why I use the Administrator account is because the Psexec tool cannot work with out administrative privilages. And also to add a level of security to it so that only I can start this System CMD. The code sorta works; i.e. It shows up in the context menu. But it only works with folders. I want to see if anyone can edit my code so that it will work for files, such as a picture. To be more specific, I want to see if anyone can make code that will open CMD to the file Directory that the file I right-clicked is in. For example:

Picture A is in Directory C:\Users\User\Pictures\ If I right-click Picture A, and press System command prompt, I want it to open with the directory C:\Users\User\Pictures\

I've been dealing with two separate problem regarding Windows XP and Internet Explorer for quite a while, and was unable to find any solution to any of them. First of all, I should mention I'm working on a PC running Windows XP + Service Pack 1. The installation of Windows XP is pretty new, since I formatted my drive a few weeks ago.

Problem #1:
I used to have a shortcut to the internet connection (through my ISP) in the Start>Programs>Startup. That way, every time I started my computer, the connection would dial and connect. It was very comfortable. However, after I installed Windows XP this last time, and did the exactly same thing (copied a shortcut to the dialer to the startup folder) - it won't work. I start the computer and the connection won't dial. As a matter of fact - it seem like it's not there - nothing happens.
A few comments:
1. When I go to Start>Programs>Startup and ("manually") click the file - it works (the connection dials).
2. I added a shortcut to a .txt file in the same Startup folder, and the TXT file opens every time I start my computer.

Problem #2:
As I mentioned, I'm using Internet Explorer 6. The problem is that very often some of the images\graphics\bullets in web pages wouldn't be displayed. Instead a white box/box with red X will show. The problem has nothing to do with Security\Privacy settings - their both set to their default ("Medium"). Please note that the problem isn't consistent -the s... Read more

Hi there

I have loads of problems with my computer, and I was hoping for someone of you could help me with this.

1. This is the main problem, probably this is causing most of the others too, and it is like following:

Since I upgraded my computer with 512 extra RAM memory (have 2x256 and 1x512 now), this scene has started to occur:
I am sitting at my desk and chatting with some friends and maybe listen to some music, but suddenly, the **** goes like BOM (no sound...) and the screen goes black and the computer dies.
Then the hard drive (I think) begin to make a noise, just for one second or so, and then it starts like normal.
This happens like once a day one day and once in 10 minutes another day.

Ok, the main thing is that i suspect the RAM memories can't "talk" with each other and they don't know which of them that should do what.

I guess there are no way to solve this problem, but if there is, I would be glad to hear it!

Ok, nr. 2 then:

Since my computer is kinda old, the "best" game I can run is counter-strike 1.6.
When I play this, first, it's always kinda laggy. Mostly I have about 30-35 processes running while surfing and stuff (all of them less than 10mb, most under 5)
Though, while playing a game I always turn most things off, including virus protection (have windows defender running 24/7) and by then i have like 270mb RAM taken (before game) and counter-strike takes about 110, which makes it 380.
When I'm playing, it do... Read more

This two-minute video shows how you can use this Linux CD called BackTrack to get system-level access to your Vista machine. For those who may not know, system-level access is a level higher than Administrator.

BackTrack is a free version of Linux that runs entirely from a bootable CD and can be downloaded freely from many places on the web as an ISO image ready to burn to CD.

For troubleshooters, this can be an invaluable resource.

A:How to get system-level access to your Vista machine

There were a few command-line tools that would allow system permissions in XP. They all worked well, but the only one I have found that works in Vista is powrrun.exe. Any program started with it, like regedit or any other, runs under system credentials. Explorer started by it has immediate access to all files and folders, and regedit is not locked out of any keys.

BackTrack is not needed for a simple renaming process. Any Linux distro with NTFS-3g drivers, Avast's NTFS4DOS floppy, UBCD4Win, Ultimate Boot CD, and many others will work just as well (and most are much smaller).

Heya, fellas, I'm getting fed up by my unstable system performance. I believe this was partly due to me foolishly running ComboFix nearly half a year ago (to help solve my network card driver issues)! I'm a techie myself, and that's why I was brave enough to use ComboFix, even if it means my system will be corrupted. But, now, it's getting annoying, and I'm too lazy to dig up info from the logs myself. Please forgive me, fellow techies...

*Bottom line: I need help restoring my corrupt Windows system (which was probably caused by ComboFix), without doing a fresh reinstall of Windows. If there's actually an uber mad infection on my comp, I'd be really happy and excited to learn how to get rid of it, as I never found one anymore. The logs are ready, if needed.

*The full story:
I have mainly tried to secure my system with up-to-date MBAM, Avast, Kaspersky TDSS Remover, and so on. My comp was in a seemingly perfect state, until one day I'm seeing errors from the event log about my wireless network card driver from my laptop's manufacturer (Sony). They refused to believe the driver is problematic and suggested for me to factory restore my whole comp--which is NEVER an option for me, unless my hard drive fails. (Also, in case you're wondering, I backup all data using Windows Backup nearly every week.) So, I decided to try ComboFix for help, despite the fact that I clearly know its side effects. I believe I also got the latest drivers fro... Read more

*BUMP-Update with more info:Help! My situation's getting worser and worser every day! By the way, sorry for not mentioning some basic info: I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit); for the hardware specs, if necessary, please search my laptop's model number: VGN-FW560F. Also, I apologize for my inability to make things more concise. I don't know how else I should explain this dilemma!*My workarounds so far:Usually, as a workaround, I would update my Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN wireless network ("wifi") card driver whenever I see Windows having "trouble" (see following listed symptoms) utilizing the wifi card. This time, though, the workaround helps for only 2 days (or 2 hard-reboots) before I'm experiencing the madness again right now. I might try to rollback and use the default driver from Microsoft as another workaround, but I might not use it since it's going to have problems with DNS configurations and wouldn't send me to sites properly sometimes, just like long time ago; it feels as if I have some browser-hijacker viruses, but not really.*My observations:I believe the problem lies in my corrupt Windows system files/libraries/DLLs that are used as APIs by my wifi card driver, which in turn might be caused by my previous attempt at foolishly experimenting with ComboFix. (May it also be caused by my wifi card hardware? I hope not, though.)I'm able to use the wifi card fine in Safe Mode, but I believe that'... Read more

Ohk so a week ago my registry corrupted. I was attempting to install NOD 32 anti virus and my laptop froze up I waited it out but in the end I had to manually reboot. This caused major issues my system wouldnt boot fully it would get to the Xp welcome screen then freeze so I used the cmd.exe during the boot process to re write the registry statements example

copy C:\windows\system32\config etc...

This restored the registry and I had to reinstall my drivers not problem. However it made another admin account which did not reflect the fact that I had programs installed user preferences etc.

So i had the bright idea of going into my BIOS and setting my laptop to boot from another HDD that had Win Xp installed via a usb connection. This did not work but it added a new entry to the boot.ini file and also to the boot selection screen at start up. I now have Win Xp Home Edition and Windows (default) and it always goes to default which results in a error message saying coudlnt boot from the selected device(the external drive that i tried to use to boot my system to restore it) not to mention my system doesnt shut down and some features dont work properly.
I realize that I caused this SO!!!! I got Win XP PRO but before I install I was wondering:

Besides backing up my personal data is there anything else I should do?

Will XP Pro work with the hard ware of my system if I reinstall my drivers after upgrading?

Should I go ahead and do a clean install of XP PRO instead of upgrading?... Read more

A:Two annoying problems, please solve!?

The firs part is easy
Just type windows live in search, when it pops up, just right click and send to documents. Then drag to desktop.
Im working on the second part now.

For the second, see if an sfc does the trick
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Before doing anything, run a full updated virus scan
If you can download and run a full scan with malwarebytes.
The fact that you cannot download may indicate a virus or malware.

I am having a number of issues with ie7 and don't know if ie8 solves these problems or should i go back to ie6. If I list the problems, can someone tell me if they are solved in ie8?

1. command bar, I found the reg. hack to remove it. and get rid of the search box. But no way to move links to the address bar. I need max space. Does ie8 give back to the user the same power they had with ie6 in this regard?

2. I made a menu on the start menu for the places I visit most. When I launch ie7 from there, it launches but it is not the foremost window. ie, it's not the active window. I have to click on it to make it the active window. I can't even fathom why this would be a feature. Does ie8 fix this, ie work like ie6 did (and every other shortcut in the start menu?)

3. Control H used to bring up the History.... now it does not. Why would anyone change this? Also I am sorely waiting for a "list by reverse chronological order" showing date and time next to each entry feature. I just can't understand why no one else is asking for this. Does ie8 have it? it seems obvious to me that is how we should be shown our history. (at least make the options available.)

4. why can't ie remember the page you were last on for each open window of ie? i sorta like the firefox feature but I hate tabs. I need to be able to use the keyboard to switch between tasks on the task bar in rapid fashion. I can't do this with a "tabbed browser." But I do like being able to... Read more

This isnt all of the answers that you wanted but most of them.

1. to remove the links got view|toolbar and uncheck links

2. is this in a tab or a seperate window?

3. Now it is crtl+shft+H
You can also right click on the command bar and choose customize the comman bar and add a history icon to it.

5. You can right click the command bar and unlock it and move things around.

7. right click and choose open in new window.

Hi, I am new there, and I have the very serious problems with Windows Mail, which I have no idea how to get rid of.
My Mail program is exactly like a little child. I never know why, suddenly becoming tired and stop working, mostly restarts, but not always. It keeps doing this unexpectedly and I loos all my changes in stored emails. Other time it often freezes, and many times all computer become frozen, I even cannot to shut down because courser CANNOT GO TO THE START buton, is bouncing on the edge of start band! I must use Alt, Ctrl and Delete to go out of the situation. The program does not like my emails with notations about gardening and plants. When I only start notate something about plants in my garden or other plants, first does not take any changes in text or pasting a text or picture, is not possible to make anything, or freezes, and does not allow me to save anything, and after sometime a half hour 'stops working' and restarts, but not always restarts. But many times stops working when I only start to work with it. They are days that WLM is working almost properly, but after many hours mostly starts to be tired and stops working!
From time to time some folders, which I use and need most, simply DISAPPEAR! If I remember what messages were there, I can sometimes find them by searching, which is rather good - and lost messages coming in searching results from nowere, so I move them to the folders which I was compelled to make new. And sometims an open message is sudde... Read more

A:How to solve serious problems with WLMail

Hi Anna. It seems to me your system problems may be bigger than just with Windows Mail.
Do you have a good anti-virus and anti-malware package installed and running?

Not sure how old your system is but if the problems are fairly widespread ie. odd things happening elsewhere as well, maybe it is overdue for a total refresh.

As a minimum, do a total virus/malware scan of your system with something like MS Defender Offline scanner and resolve any issues found. Then suggest you uninstall and re-install WLM.

If that doesn't fix the issues you are having then a total system refresh - restore to factory settings if you are able or re-install the OS, your apps and data from scratch.

Sometimes it is far more expedient to go back to scratch and start again then spend hours trying to isolate and resolve problems like those you are having.

You will of course want to save all your data so it can be restored onto the refreshed system.

Hopefully you are capable of doing all that, otherwise look to a capable friend or drop it into your local PC Repair shop.

Best of luck for getting this sorted.

Over the past few days people have been having trouble with AVG not seeming to update properly.

I have just forund that it is because one of the recent updates disables the Link Scanner component and the Resident Shield, this can cause problems if you use it to protect your web browsing and other functions. To slove this problem you need to turn them back on by going in to the User Interface and making sure everything has a green tick and says 'Active'. if they dont then you need to click on the component that is not active and make sure that the Tick box has a tick in it and then press save changes.
