Lenovo Y700 HDD Upgrade

Q: Lenovo Y700 HDD Upgrade

I asked this question on a solved thread, so I wasn't sure if it would ever get answered. Anyway, I bought a Lenovo Y700(model 80NW000PUS), but the 1TB WD blue slim 5400rpm didn't sound too sexy for me. I'm a power user(gaming, AutoCAD, misc.media) so I ordered a 1TB WD Black 7200rpm(It wasn't slim, but it still fit-maybe that was the problem?) and the machine didn't read it at all (the disk manager, nor the BIOS would pick it up), but worked when I switched back to the WD Blue that came with it. I figured the HDD was DOA, so I called Lenovo just to be sure and they told me that the laptop didn't support HDD beyond 1TB 5400rpm. They suggested if I wanted more performance, I could go with an SSHD so long it was still 5400rpm, which I don't believe is worth the trouble. So, I want to know my options, because I can't imagine why a GAMING laptop would not support 7200rpm. I already have an 128GB SSD in the M.2 slot that I boot from. So, basically should I just suck it up and deal with the HDD that it shipped with, or has someone had success with a 7200rpm HDD. If so, is the performance worth the upgrade? Or is an SSHD at 5400rpm worth it? I'm trying to stay at 1TB, so SSDs are out(expensive! Plus, the laptop doesn't support it). Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone,I just recently purchase a 128GB SSD version Y700 series and thought of upgrading it myself with 1TB HDD. But since I am new to laptop hardwares, I came across that Y700 SSD version doesn't come with HDD bracket preinstalled. However, since I just got my laptop like 2 hours ago, I don't have a spudger to open it and check whether will the recent orders include one? Please do advise what should I do. Thank you

Hi all,  I'm planning on upgrading the RAM in my Y700-15ISK system, I recently installed a 1tb SSHD and this is my next step. My only issue is that I'm not sure on what RAM is applicable, using sites such as Kingston's system scanner and also Crucial's doesn't show my system specs accurately and therefore I don't feel all too confident about their results. After looking into is seems I need DDR4 SO-DDIM which is running at 1.2v and 2133MHz. I currently have (1x4GB) installed and I am planning on upgrading to a 16GB kit (2x8GB). After looking about I came to find this: http://www.ebuyer.com/728407-corsair-16gb-2x8gb-ddr4-sodimm-2133mhz-c15-memory-kit-cmso16gx4m2a2133c...Does anyone have any opinions? Thanks.

Hi, I am going to buy a used Lenovo IdeaPad Y700 15.6". The modelnr is 80NV00JWMX It has the following spesifications: Intel Core i5-6300HQ, Nvidia GTX 960M 2GB, 8 GB DDR4 RAM, 1 TB HDD (maybe a 8 GB flash drive). I have never owned a Lenovo, just several other brands. Will it be possible to upgrade this model with a SSD, and still have the 1 TB HDD? I am thinking of a M.2 Solid State Drive.  I am going to pick up the Lenovo later today. I just wanted to clarify this before I am picking it up.

A:Lenovo Y700 SSD and Memory upgrade

hi liors.

Welcome to the Forums.

Looking at page 26-27 of the HMM, this model (Y700-15ISK) can use up to:

Standard Memory
? DDR4-2133 MHz, SODIMM 2 (max 16 GB)

Hard disk drive ? 2.5-inch, 7 mm SATA III? 500 GB / 1 TB, 5400rpm? HYBRID 1 TB 5400rpm SSHD (8G)? SSD, NGFF, 128 GB / 256 GB / 512 GB

So to answer your question, a 16GB RAM and 128GB is doable on this machine.

As for running Ubuntu on the Y700, this Ubuntu on Lenovo Models page doesn't show that the Y700 is certified so this means that you may be able to install the OS but you may have problems finding compatible drivers.

Regards

First, new to the site and I've been reading up on my issue here to no avail as none of the solutions work or don't apply unforuntely, but here is my issue. I have recently bought the Y700 and bought a Samsung 850 EVO M.2 250 GB drive (model M5E250BW) and have installed inside the laptop. I tested to see if would show under the bios and it did and thought "oh great, this will be easey," but it won't show up under the disk manager or device manager unfortunately. So I am unable to initiaize or format the particular disk. I have called samsung (if it is under bios their product works), windows (if one hard drive shows up then there product is working), and lenovo says they have exhasted all avenues of support and they have no idea... so I'm at a loss. I am about to return the computer and the new drive and just say screw it at this point, so hopefully someone can help me. *New* The lenovo supervisor I had press to get was telling me something about legacy mode or something to that nature as a hint (changing UEFI or etc to Legacy), but refused to tell me more. No idea if that gives any ideas.

Hey everyone. I have a small problem with my Lenovo Y700-15ISK laptop. The laptop is in the 8gb RAM, 960M graphics card and 1tb HDD configuration. The HDD is clearly the bottleneck for me, so I've bought an m.2 SSD that I'd like to install alongside the main HDD. The SSD that I've bought is a Kingston 240GB (SUV500M8) that has SATA III connectivity. I've installed the SSD, but as soon as I start the laptop, it stays stuck at the Lenovo splash screen. Also, when the SSD is installed, I can't enter the bios. As soon as I take it off, the laptop works as normal again. Does that mean that the SSD I've bought is not compatible with this laptop, or am I missing something (like some bios setting)? Thanks in advance for anyone who will (hopefully) reply and help me shed some light on my problem.

Hello everybody! I am interested in buying the new Gaming Laptop Lenovo ideapad Y700-15ACZ in the TOP version with FX-8800P and 4GB R9-M385X. As I have seen, first offers come only having the 1TB WD slim hdd. So time to find out which will be the best M.2 SSD to add nearby. For this need to clarify first if the M.2 port is connected to the SATA III of the FX-8800P's internal southbridge only or if it has connection to PCIe lanes. The HMM https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_y700-15acz_hmm_201508.pdf tells on page 26 there is PCI Express Gen3 and SATA Gen3. For the hdd is written SATA III as note and for the ssd it is NGFF which means the same like you write M.2, so it is unclear. Btw - there are NO DDR4 ports on that model yet. On page 64 you find some oem M.2 ssd models that Lenovo offers to add. Those are SATA3 models like LiteOn CV-1 and Samsung PM871 with keys for "B+M". But this also doesn't mean anything more than might be badder choices. Have a look at the mainboard on page 48. You can see that the M.2 connector has only key M (right side) which means PCIe 3.0 (cpu) + SATA whereas key B (left side) would mean PCIe 2.0 (southbridge) + SATA. That M key port would allow to put in ssd cards like the Samsung SM951MZ-HPV (AHCI) model which might be the fastest using AHCI+PCIe or even the newest model Samsung SSD 950 pro which uses PCIe 3.0+NVMe only. But if there exists only a SATA III connection, the key should be "B only" instea... Read more

I am about to get a Lenovo Ideapad Y700 15" Touchscreen laptop to India from the United States. The M.2 SSD it will be having has a storage capacity of 128GB, which I would like to upgrade to 256GB by swapping (replacing) the existing one with a new M.2 SSD. I have a couple of questions which I hope you would answer as soon as possible. Please note that this storage upgrade will be done in India, and not in the United States, so I would like you to answer accordingly. Q1. Will this void the warranty? And, is any warranty transfer required because of the change of country from US to India?Assuming that the warranty remains after this upgrade, Q2. How can I carry out this process? Obviously, no data migration utility for Windows will work here because the operating system will be on the drive that will be replaced. So Windows and other applications will have to be installed once again, which brings me to..... Q3. How do I ensure I do not lose the pre-installed Lenovo softwares like Dolby's control panel, Stagelight, to name a few? Is it possible to download these from Lenovo's website using any registration key for the laptop? Q4. As Windows 10 Home is pre-installed, will there be any license issue with Windows after the SSD is swapped and the operating system is re-installed? Q5. Lastly, can this be done at a Lenovo Service Center? This laptop is a very expensive investment for me, and I would like to get an elaborate answer for all of th... Read more

I can't seem to find my specs on the Lenovo site for my model, purchased directly from amazon. Model is 80NV0026US. Good deals on drives right now. Specifically looking at a Samsung - 850 EVO 500GB (MZ-N5E500BW). I can't figure out what is compatible with my machine multiple threads saying PCIe and some Nvme. if someone else asked that already i am sorry i couldn't find it.i have a Y700-15ISK 80NV and i am just curious about how much ram can i put in it.in almost every site i see 16gb is the max but that doesn't seem right. the cpu supports up to 64 gb so thats not problem.and ddr4 can be found 16gb per stick so on most models that has 2 slots. it means 32gb.which leads me to the strangest thing. by specs of all y700 (and mine) it has only 2 slots of ram.but according to the task manager and cpu z (program) i have 4 slots! which means 64gb of ram!!what is going on??

Pretty much it looks like that all Y700 models support Upto 16GB RAM.
http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/ideapad/y700-series/y700-15-inch/

The hardware maintenance manual also says about 8GB per slot and there are only 2 slots (Pg 78) -
https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad_y700-15_17isk_15acz_touch-15isk_hmm_201510....

Anyways, for gaming you dont need more than 8gb of RAM, atleast not yet. I am playing Witcher 3 on Ultra settings with ONLY 8gb of RAM.

Dear All, especialy Lenovo representatives Resently I have bought Lenovo Y700-15ISK with 256SSD only, as I was going to use my existed 2 TB internal HDD. Trying to install mantioned above HDD into laptop I found that for SSD versions Lenovo does not include required HDD cable. I spent hours searching amazon and ebay - but nothing, than i contacted Lenovo support and they told that lenovo is not provideng such a spare part, and advice me not to open up laptop t keep warranty. Do somone have a solution for such an issue? Dear Lenovo team, is such a thing is a normal course of Lenovo business?I think a lot of people around the world will purchase SDD versions to be able to use their HDD with tonnes of informations instead oferred by Lenovo WD slim (which also is not best bay in terms of quality and performance), please advise!

Hi everyone,Bought Lenovo y700 ideapad laptop last week, and since then im having problems with Wi-Fi, tried many offered solutions on the internet like updating my drivers, reinstalling them, the power settings options etc.. some of them worked just for few hours and then the problem returned.I think it's a problem with the driver because everytime the problem occurs my intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 has that exclamation mark and it issues the Error 10 and when troubleshooting by right clicking the Wi-Fi icon it says "The intel(R) dual band wireless AC 3165 adapter is experiencing driver or hardware related problems".and sometimes my Wi-Fi options in settings disappears..I'm really out of ideas looking hours for solutions but can't find any that completely solves the problem.I would really appreciate if someone has a solution for me.(sorry for my english). Thanks for the support, Roee.

I bought my laptop from BH not even 1 month ago and barely used the laptop since I travel a lot. Today in the morning, I was watching a video and laptop just shutdown itself (battery was almost fully charged and unplugged) like you unpluge a TV and the screen disappears. Afterwards, I tried to open it but simply power button does not work. I plugged in the adapter but there is no sign that laptop is working (no lights, no screen, no fans, nothing).I cannot believe I am having such a stupid problem like this. Is there anyone knows what can be the problem and the solution ?  (I already tried to remove the rams and replaced with working rams but nothing changed)Currently I live in Austria and I don't even know if the warranty covers in this country.

A:Lenovo Y700 - No Power

Hi CandyDulfer ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would help if you specify the type of  Y700 or if you can provide the machine number.
Check on the machine number from the sticker or check it from here ,just keep your serial number confidential.

Any indicator light when you plug in the charger like a battery charging light?
It would help if you can test the charger itself with a voltmeter if you have the tools and skill by following the power checkup guide from your hardware manual downloadable from the support site (change the product type if needed. Known good adapter can also help to isolate the issue.

Since the battery is internal and the issue is with power , it would be best to check technical support if they would be able to assist you for repair as specific models parts may not available in Austria and you may have to contact the location of purchase for in warranty service.

So I have recently bought a Lenovo y700 with the FX 8800P and R9 M385x on board and all was well to start. Then I had problems just getting the R9 M385X to work, If anyone has a fix for that please let me know. So I begin to snoop around online and started to realise I have probably made a big mistake buying this laptop. Firstly I really enjoy the look and feel this laptop has but when you look deeper you realise all is not well. See I found out that the FX 8800P is capable of running at 35W and on dual channel ddr3 2133 RAM, and the two hardware components can run in crossfire. Now when you realise that lenovo has done the cheap and mass produced a single mother board for both the Carrizo and Carrizo-L chip sets, meaning that the max watt the FX 8800P is getting is 15W instead of the 35W it can use. Combine this with the fact that this board only supports ddr3 1600 RAM and so far no crossfire support and you can understand why I'm sitting her scratching my head wondering what to do with this laptop that was crippled from the start. Lenovo why can't you just let AMD work how it was supposed to? Please explain!!

Had this laptop for about a year now and it has worked wonderfully. But the past few weeks it has randomly stopped charging for about a second or 2 then it starts charging again. Except just now, it stopped charging altogether. There are a few times here and there where it would charge for a fraction of a second. Think the problem is the laptop itself or the charger?

A:Lenovo y700 not charging

There is actually no real way to determine whether it's the charger or the laptop right off the bat, we can only speculate and make assumptions that are MOST LIKELY true.BUY A NEW CHARGER. If your laptop does charge, most likely it's your charger. EDIT: Also, let me mention that if your charger will charge for a second then stop, and it keeps doing that or you keep plugging it in and out while it's doing that, you can very quickly damage your battery. It happened to me.
