chromium 22.x no favicons

Q: chromium 22.x no favicons

I'm running a chromium 21.x snap shot. Every time I try to update to one of the new 22.x snap shots, I lose all favicons. Seems to be a recurring problem with chrome browser. The snap shots have been 22.x for awhile now. I'm surprised nobody has picked up on this issue.

Even running Bookmark Sentry to manually load all my bookmarks to check they exist does not refresh the favicons. While the extension is running I can see favicons showing up in the bookmarks. But as soon as I close the browser and open it again, they are all gone.

Really weird.

I did notice a mention of a chrome extension named Bookmarks Favicon Fixer. But all searches end up pointing to dead links.

edit: I filed it as an issue on chromium bug tracker. See what happens.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: chromium 22.x no favicons

What'd you expect? It's obviously a beta/alpha build, which means that every build might also have a regression over the previous. You might want to make things easy on you by just going for stability and leaving the newest test builds alone.

It's also very likely that this doesn't occur on every system running that 22.x build. You did the right thing by filing a bug report. The next build might not contain this bug, thanks to you!

Hello there

I've got lots of bookmarks on both of my browsers, many of them are missing favicons

I wonder whether it's possible to force the browser to only download/refresh the favicons for all my bookmarks... without visiting the websites themselves (which would take ages, since I'm not talking of a dozen of bookmarks, but like hundreds )

I use Mozilla Firefox (latest; 3.5.6) and SRWare Iron (a derivative of Google Chrome, based on version 4.0)

Many of the Favorites for Internet Explorer list and/or Bookmarks list for Firefox have tiny little 16X16 icons alongside their names. I have several that have only the generic folded page corner icon however.
Can you design a replacement icon and have it show up in the listing? If so, how do you manage it?
I have Googled and find several tutors for designing and placing an icon in/on your own website page but none for simply replacing the icon on the favorites/bookmarks listing.

When I switch my browser from Firefox back to Internet Explorer 6, all the special URL icons (favicons) in my Favorites revert back to the default blue lowercase "e." Is there any way to avoid this reversion?
Also, I just downloaded Favicon Picker 2.5 as a Firefox Extension but I don't know how to use it. Any suggestions?

A:Favicons

If I remember rightly (assuming you have favicon picker installed) you right click on the bookmark and select properties and then you can browse and select the icons.

I can't remember though whether you have to set anything up from the extension manager. Go - Tools > Extensions > find favicon picker in list and click on it, if it greys out there is nothing to set up, otherwise select options and set your preferences.

I have a new PC with XP. In the past (with my older ME PC), when I wanted to place a shortcut on my desktop to access the site quickly I would leftclick file-send-shortcut to desktop and istantaneously a favicon would come up as desired. This favicon would be quite colorful and easy to identify on my desktop (as the site developer probably intended). But now, when I try that maneuver, a generic e icon comes up (all the time). How can I obtain the favicon that the site developer intended?

I would like to know, what's the point of the "Change Icon" function for favicons, if they keep getting messed up every so often in IE 8?

I can delete the Temporary Internet Files to get them back but why should I have to do that? Is there a way to save the favicons to a different location to stop this happening? I tried using a dedicated favicons folder before but it made no difference, maybe I'm doing it wrong and there's a special way to do it?

Thank you.

The problem......

I have a lot of bookmarks in IE11 and certain Favicons persistently give trouble and do not display. This forum is one of them I have another 3 or 4 that are troublesome too although the majority are OK.

I googled and searched on this subject and have not come up with a workable answer or explanation as to how Favicons are handled.

This forums Favicon fails to show no matter what I do. The other problem ones seems to appear randomly when they feel like it but once those particular ones are displaying correctly, they remain correct until a disk and browser clean deletes them again. All the remaining Favicons will repopulate instantly when that particular bookmark folder is opened. Just like photo thumbnails in a folder. So there must be a stored cache of the images somewhere. If so then it may be possible to delete it and let it rebuild when the sites are visited.

So a question. Is there a store of the Favicon images somewhere ? If there is I haven't found it... and I've googled and tried the usual stuff and unhidden operating files and looked in App Data and Roaming and Local folders. There's nothing there.

I even tried resetting IE11 to defaults and clearing all settings as a test and then visiting this site and putting it as a fresh favourite. No Favicon.

A:Favicons. How and where are they stored ? How to fix ?

Check temporary internet files.

Opera is different but the same in browsing history.

Try deleting browser history & visit a site.
IE should reload the favicon.

Hi, I just found this out:

You can easily make a shortcut to a website in Vista (maybe also in XP, I'm not sure) .
Just right-click on the desktop and click add shortcut.
Now the actual tip: You can make a folder 'icons' and save the favicon.ico from the website you're linking to in that folder and use that as a custom icon for the shortcut...
That way the icons really make sense for the website they link to.

That's all.

Yes, Favicons are stored in the cache. Since they're gotten from the viewed website

I have recently taken the leap and upgraded my browser from IE6 to IE7 on my XP-Home machine.

I normally have a bunch of shortcuts on my desktop. To reduce the clutter I had put them in a folder, also on the desktop.

Since the change to IE7 a curious thing has happened. All of the shortcuts in that folder have lost their favicons. The favicons have been replaced with the generic “E”.

What’s interesting is if I go into the properties the original icon is there, in the upper left hand side. If I click “Change Icon” to correct the situation, nothing happens.

Lastly, if I simply create a new shortcut on the desktop the icon is correct.

Go figure.

Any help would be appreciated. Otherwise I’ll just live with it.

Thanks,

Tom

Did you create this folder yourself or did you use the desktop cleanup wizard which creates a folder on the desktop called "Unused Desktop Shortcuts"?
You might have to drag all the icons in that folder back onto the desktop, then run the Desktop Cleanup Wizard and place a check mark in the icons you want to remove.

There is a program you can install and run called FavOrg which rebuilds shortcut Icons but this app is for the favorites icons.

To keep the favicons on my Favorites links, I would locate the favicon in my Temporary Internet Files, copy and paste it into a folder that I could access when I wished to change the IE icon. Any idea how to make these "sticky"? A bunch of IE shortcut icons is no way to find what I want!

A:FAVicons not sticky in QuickLaunch toolbar

It used to be that Internet Explorer favicons could be copied from the Temporary Internet folder to a "safe' location and linked to through the "change icon" option on the properties page of your shortcut.

http://www.worldstart.com/tips/tips.php/1284

However as near as I can tell a recent security patch has made these .ico files dissappear or go into disguise.

If you do find favicons in your temporary internet cache and want to preserve them, copy them out of there.

I lose the favicons for Avant browser (my greatly-preferred internet browser), and this happens after running either SpywareBlaster or Spybot search and destroy. Of course this is just a trivial annoyance, but I would like to add the location of these favicons to the ignore list for whichever of the above is silently removing them. Can anyone advise please?

I know the icons are in c:\temp\$.ficn$ with an index in subdirectory index. I'm asking if anyone can advise on how to tune this path out during scanning?

A:Losing avant browser favicons

mea culpa

Consider this request closed ! I am now almost certain I deleted the folder c:\temp\$.ficn$ myself. So it's a case of mea culpa

Reason is installs/uninstalls often leave all sorts of weird stuff lying around in sub-directories of c:\temp, and I have a bad habit of just deleting them from time to time without even checking what is in the directory. I will set the directory as undeletable if I can.

Hello Everybody,

This annoying problem has me a little perplexed, and I can't remember how to fix it!

The situation is this....I have created shortcuts on my desktop for sites that I use regularly; such as, TSF; eBay, and my Banks....when I create the shortcut, it appears on the desktop with the respective Logo for the site; however, when I have to reboot or start up in the mornings, the shortcuts are still there but without the logos..they all revert to jsut an "E"....is there any way that I can make the personilised logos remain?

I have tried things like locking the desktop, but to no avail.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.....for reference, I have included a snapshot of my desktop, after I have chnged the icons to the original logos, but with one exemption this morning, and that is the TSF logo will not appear, only that revolting "E"!!

Regards,

Dave T.

Hi Dave..

one thing that may help would be to remove the favicons from your internet explorer cache and keep them in their own folder elsewhere. Then assign the shortcut icon.

If they stay in the temp files folder, they will be lost every time you clear the cache.

Hope that helps mate :-)

There's no "cache" for Favicons. They are saved directly in the places.sqlite file, in your Profile folder, with your bookmarks and browser history.

Source: Bookmarks don't show all favicons

First go to Hidden Files and Folders - Show or Hide; You want to show, follow Option One, Steps one and two.

Then go to
Code:
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Click on your profile, it should look something like this: 6boqw0lk.default-120653523721 it will be the only folder below Profiles, click on it.
Scroll down until you see places.sqlite, click on it. A box will open asking you what program you would like to open this file with, notepad is acceptable.

Uncheck the box, click on OK. Wait for the file to open, mine is over 10MB, took a minute.
The majority of what you see will be in programming language, but you can see the links to your saved bookmarks.
There are also bookmarkbackups located at:
Code:
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\Your Profile\bookmarkbackups
and it will be a sub-folder in your profile.

It is more difficult to open because it is a JSONLZ4 file, but there is a third-party program from FileInfo.com that may work to open them: File Viewer Lite
I tried to scan it with VirusTotal, but the que was taking too long so here are the results from a day ago: https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/5...49bb/analysis/

Hullo Everyone,

I tried to find an answer on the forums and elsewhere, to no effect. I found some posts about IE temp files, favicons etc. but nothing to solve the following riddle:

(I had a habit in XP to keep IE temp on a small "temp" partition to avoid fragmenting the system partition so much and to be able to defrag quickly and often. I kept all "rubbish" on that small "temp" partition.)

In Vista, I also tried to move the IE temp files through the settings in IE options, and the IE options say they moved them. But when I look into the new location, I do not find the IE temp files there (yes I did "show hidden files" and "unhide protected system files" in folder options). The t.i.f. folder was created but it is empty. I do not find them in the original location either.

On top of that, from this moment on all the favicons are gone and never reload again. And History is empty forever. I can not figure it out as to why and how this is so.

After I move IE t.f. back to their original location, everything goes back to normal. I would appreciate any hints as to what should I read to get out of this, it won't let me sleep. I apologise if I am overlooking something or being completely dumb.

By the way, I have read many replies by "Shawn" and I would like to send compliments to him for his patient and detailed instructions on so many issues.

Thank you very much in advance, kind regards.

I put about ten shortcuts onto my desktop, such as ones for eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.; however, they all have Edge's standard blue icons. This makes the whole group appear as a monolithic bunch of icons that all look the same and not so easy to read. Is there a way to change these desktop icons to the various websites' favicons, making them easier to see/read/use?

I think that you can right-click a shortcut, then choose "Properties," then click on "Change Icon." However, from there, I'm stuck, because it offers me the option of browsing to the icon I want, but I don't know how to get to any favicon that I might want.

It's easy to find those websites' favicons, using Google images, and I can then save them onto my desktop, but I don't know how to get them from there onto their relevant shortcuts. I think there is a cache, called something like "shell32.icon" or whatever, which holds icons, but I'm not sure if that's anything I want to mess with, because I'm fully aware that messing with those kinds of files can lead to disastrous results, such as the computer freezing up, the 'blue screen of death,' etc.

Hi,

I observed that IE 11 In-Private Browsing Doesn't show Favicon, instead it shows IE standard logo. Is this a build-in functionality or it's a bug in IE 11 ??
"Inspect Element - Network tab" also doesn't show any request related to the Favicon while In-Private browsing, but in normal browser I can see the request related to Favicon.

This is an urgent issue and our Testing Team has raised this concern. Could anybody help me in answering the above queries.

To reproduce, Delete all browsing data, cache, cookies, and everything from Browser history.
Also, what I really want to understand here is - " Does IE 11 - In Private Browsing mode allows storing any values in Cache/Cookies/local Storage ? ". If the answer is NO, then as per my Knowledge - Favicon
is a part of Cache/Cookies and that's why I am not able to see the Favicon while browsing the Application in In-Private Mode.

Let me know your thoughts on this.

And yet,it's still in add/remove programs.
Your advice most appreciated

By Chromium you mean Google Chrome? Maybe that's why you can't find it in the Registry?
You should not remove a program by manually deleting it, you need to use it's uninstaller. Try using the free Revo Uninstaller, be sure to use the Advanced method to remove all remnants from the Registry.

I read earlier about eFast using Chromium to build a fake Chrome browser. This may be part of that.
MBAM detects it....it was an MBAM article that I was reading.

Try using Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware in Advanced Mode to uninstall Chromium.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).

Click the Scan tab at the top of the program window, select Threat Scan and click the Scan Now button.
If you receive a message that updates are available, click the Update Now button (the update will be downloaded, installed, and the scan will start).
When MBAM is finished scanning it will display a screen t... Read more

Since a few months ago, I downloaded from the wrong site and it installed Chromium on my device. It randomly opens, but doesn't seem to actually affect anything, and no antivirus I tried (Malwarebytes, Windows Defender) would get rid of it. I got Malwarebytes premium and it gives me a popup every now and then saying something about the nusojog.com trojan.
