Solved: Firefox stepped out of the lovely dark!

Q: Solved: Firefox stepped out of the lovely dark!

Took some security updates, also updated my own security suite (CA Internet Security), now my Firefox browser is using it's default theme. I tried going into the add-ons and telling Firefox to use either PitchDark or MidnightFox (my favorite), no luck. I tried installing them over again, the installation failed. I tried disabling my CA security suite (both firewall and anti-virus modules), still looking at this insipid pale blue screen.
I hope someone can help me discover the glitch..
Thanks in advance,
Shoshana

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have received the SpySherrif trojan almost immediately after getting rid of the smitfraud one based on instructions I found here in another thread.

Below is a copy of my hijack this. An interesting side effect : I can't change my desktop from the "SYSTEM STOPPED" message by right-ckicking on the desktop. I can get into the desktop tab, but can't change anything.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log... Read more

A less drastic measure may have been a better first choice of action, but it is too late now. Trying to stop a factory reset could cause even bigger problems.

Should you ever find yourself in a similar situation, going into advanced options and seeing if there is a choice to repair Windows might be a better first move.

My APC battery backup UPS needs a new battery, and I'm considering getting a new unit, as mine is approaching 5 years old. I've been reading that standard UPS devices put out a stepped sine wave that can cause issues and possible damage or reduced lifespan with newer Active PFC Power Supplies and LCD monitors. Cyberpower make some that output a "pure sine wave" that is supposed to be better for PFC hardware. Is this really an issue I should be concerned with?

There are 2 UPS units from Cyberpower I'm looking at - 1 has 12 outlets which gives me 2 more than I currently have, which I could definitely use. But it only puts out a standard stepped sine wave. Then there's a similar one with only 10 outlets that outputs a "pure sine wave". Is it worth getting the pure version and losing 2 outlets, or is it not as important as some are saying? I want to do what's best for my equipment of course, especially because I tend to get random power outages for anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes fairly often - enough to warrant owning one of these units.

A:UPS advice - stepped sine wave or pure?

You really don't need to pay that kind of money. A "pure" sine wave is no better or worse then a stepped sine wave. Not to a properly designed power supply. A properly made power supply filters the incoming power and filters the out going power. In either case the power from an APC is cleaner then what is coming from the Mains directly.

So here is my advice. Forget the sine wave nonsense and get what you can afford that gives you the backup time you need.

Seems to be the fashion lately to have dark text on a dark background. I'm still using my Trust Rusty CRT monitor so these are practically unreadable for me. Anyone know a fix without using SeaMonkey or some other complex mumbo jumbo? Just need contrasting text so I can read it.

I'm using Firefox 3.6.2. Right now the only way I can read text on these sites is to select it with the mouse. Even then I don't always get contrast.

A:Firefox - make text readable on sites with dark background colors

Hi,

This may be not what you are after, but what about:

Firefox > Tools > Options > Content tab > Colours > Uncheck "Allow pages to choose their own colours, instead of using my selections above"

Does this solve the issue?

Firewall Required
Windows' firewall is highly ineffective, as it does not block outgoing connections. Here are some free firewalls available for personal use:Sygate Personal Firewall
ZoneAlarm
Tiny Personal Firewall
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall
Outpost Firewall PRO
Please pick one and install it.

Antivirus Required
I notice that you do not appear to have an active antivirus program. Connecting to the Internet without antivirus protection is a "Welcome" doormat for malware. It can take as little as eight seconds to infect an unprotected computer. Here are several very good free antivirus products which are available:AOL Active Virus Shield (powered by Kaspersky Antivirus)
BitDefender
Avira PersonalEdition Classic
Avast!
AVG
Please install one of these now. Do not install more than one antivirus program because they will conflict with each other. It is imperative that you update your antivirus software at least once a week (even more if you wish). Everything had been running just fine since the last time that I was here. Until just the other day, that is. Don't know if it's relavent, or not But after the most recent update to Minecraft, I've been getting BSOD's if I play for more than 15 or 20 minutes. And just now, I woke up to find that out that there was a BSOD while the computer was just idling overnight on the screensaver. The latest dump files have been included.

Thanks ahead of time for any and all help that y'all can provide.

Just had another BSOD a minute or two ago, while watching a video on youtube. New Minidump included.

And another one, again while idling. Given that the behavior was so close to the way she acted last time, I ran memtest+. Turns out that I /did/ have another memory stick take a dive on me. It's from the same set that the first stick was, so I'm not too surprised.

While I'm fairly certain that it was just a bad stick, could someone please take a look at the dumps, just for conformation and in case something else is there that I might be missing. Thanks much. Most recent minidump has been attached.

A:Got to deal with this again... Lovely

Well, they are all memory type errors - but that's not unusual to see with BSOD's
What is unusual is that you still have Driver Verifier turned on - and that will continue to stress the drivers (and slow your system down) and cause BSOD's until you turn it off.

Also, the number of older drivers makes it possible that the older drivers are causing it.
OLDER DRIVERS PRESENT IN THE DUMP FILES
- Please update these drivers from the device manufacturer's website - or uninstall/remove them from your system. Reference links included below.

Well, I'm here again. I've been at this BSOD for quite awhile now and I've hit a wall and I'm not sure where else to go or what to do at this point.
I've already attempted Diskchecking and such. I've uninstalled drivers which I've read lead to this problem, I've tried re-installing windows all together and all that good stuff.

I'm sorry, I'm not making this sound all that professional. As a regular user, my knowledge of windows is pretty limited and I had to step way outside my comfort zone just to attempt what I've tried so far.

The files should be included.

Thank you for your time. <3 (With more thanks to come!)

Hi KingLordFluffy.

Download and install Drivers for Atheros AR5BWB222 and Windows 7. Follow the guide Driver Install - Device Manager if needed.

Plus, you need to do some maintenance jobs. Daemon Tools, Alcohol 120% and Power Archiver Pro uses SCSI Pass Through Direct (SPTD), which is a well known BSOD causer. Uninstall Daemon Tools at first. Then download SPTD standalone installer from Disk-Tools.com, and execute the downloaded file as guided below :
Double click to open it.
Click this button only:

If it is grayed out, as in the picture, there is no more SPTD in your system, and you just close the window.
Free up the startup. Windows does not need any other program to auto start with it, but the auto start programs often conflicts and causes various problems including BSODs.
Click on the Start button
Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
Select the “Startup” tab.
Deselect all items other than the antivirus and the mouse driver.
Apply > OK
Accept then restart.
Let us know the results.

Hi! I have a new Acer desktop computer with XP that has shown no problems. It’s not networked. Just got a ‘new-to-me’ Ricoh printer, an AP3800C. It is a legacy (older) but gorgeous printer, and it printed beautifully in the shop.
I got the drivers from the Ricoh website and added the printer via control panel – printers & faxes – add a printer, as the drivers are .inf and not self-executing. When I send a job to print, it doesn’t show up in the queue and nothing happens. The computer will send to another printer with no problem.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers and rebooted both computer and printer many times. The printer shows no error message and displays ‘ready’ on its screen. The AP3800C comes with three drivers, PCL5c; Adobe PostScript 3; and Ricoh's own RPCS (refined printing command stream). Have tried printing with each, as each installed separately under different names.
Tried printing from Wordpad, and from command.
Have booted computer both with printer on and printer off, (then turn printer on). No error messages, nothing. Print spooler and RPC are both on.
This is the first time I have used the parallel port on this computer. I do not have another peripheral with a parallel but tested LPT1 (it works, according to Windows) but uninstalled and reinstalled LPT1 from Device Manager for good measure.
Ran a little app called Driver Detective, which didn’t pick up the AP3800 drivers at all, but did detect other printer/scanner drive... Read more

Have you checked what options are enabled in BIOS under Integrated Peripherals, Onboard Parallel Port and Parallel Port Mode (if your BIOS is similar to mine)? It's a vain hope, but you never know.
To get into BIOS you repeatedly press a specific key immediately on switching on the PC. It's usually F2 or delete.
Good luck!

I have a gateway profile 4, I run duel monit. all has been fine till suddenly it locks up and nothing will respond, not even ctl + alt delete. I power down and try to restart and a black screen with green lines comes up, then I get white pin dot's all over and it tells me windows failed to load etc... choose a start up...normal, safe, last know good config. etc..
I have tried both normal and last known and screen goes black and I will get some red lines and its trying to do something but eventually comes back to black with pin dots and failed to load. I tried reinstalling windows and still had this problem, I actually had to attempt to reinstall xp several times before it worked. I then was told that my hard drive was possibley going bad (magic 5yrs I suppose) so I installed a new one, went thru reinstalling xp and all seemed to be good, so did all the updates and it lasted 8 hrs before it went back to same problem. It will not load windows. Not sure where to turn at this point, is it a problem with video grafics? My PCI? Not a computer techy by far so I am just guessing at this point. Everyone here has always been of great help and am very thankfull to have this as an avenue of support.

Hello Guys,

I have just read previous postings on this subject, and i can confirm that the trouble is with ie after version 6.

I loved the jukebox graphics nin MMJB7.5 (the shiny bright orange American jukebox one) and it is an old and beloved friend. Later versions of MMJB pale into insignificance.

When I installed ie7, the mmjb failed to work. No error messages, just wouldn't start up. Im spent a little while killing ie7 and reinstalling ie6, and back came the jukebox.

Now I have just installed the brand spanking new ie8 which seems to work really well at first try, but, POUFF!! no mmjb again. When I hit the shortcut button to mmjb.exe, I just get a very momentary egg timer then NOWT

My head is about to go under the bonnet, but I thought it would be of interest that it is definitely ie post 6.

By the bye, did anyone find a solution?

I've had Vista for three days now and I've decided; it looks great, but in every other way it simply enrages me. I ordered a Dell PC and didn't get the option of XP. I would MUCH prefer to have had that. I've run XP on an old battered PC I've owned for 6 years and never had any problems with compatibility. But the old dog was getting a bit slow and struggling with Creative Suite/multitasking. So I thought I'd upgrade to a new machine. The speed is fantastic, but I just keep running into problems with the OS. I need to get a new scanner as it's not compatible. My printer won't work. Creative Suite (CS2) menus do weird things. Firefox keeps crashing. Three days and I've had enough!

HOW do I get rid of this ridiculously ostentatious OS and go back to good old reliable, if slightly unattractive XP?

Please bear in mind I have the technical knowledge of a newt.
Advice REALLY needed!

My old Samsung SPN0812N HDD was beginning to give out lately so I decided to image my HDD onto a brand new Samsung HDD.

However, once I had done that I found that Windows would only load up to the "Windows XP Home Edition" logo before sitting there for 30 seconds before the screen went blank and the machine rebooted.

I attempted to boot up using Safe Mode and I found that every time it got to the "DriversMup.sys" file, it would sit there before rebooting.

In order to rectify this I pulled out the original XP Home Edition Upgrade CD (I'm reckoning it's SP1) and attempted to repair the OS by restoring the original drivers.

Yet when I went to do this, I found that XP was unable to delete the "oakley.dll" file from the computer and it was unable to copy across a host of files from the CD to the computer. I attempted to try the installation again but it failed. Repeatedly.

I am unsure of what to do or how to rectify this problem as I have a lot of irreplacable files stored in the larger partition of my HDD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated .

A:A lovely set of problems caused by imaging my HDD

Welcome to TSF....

What program did you use to image the old hard drive?

You can try this, with the computer turned-off remove the PCI cards one at a time and try to reboot, if the computer reboots then replace the drivers for the last PCI card removed.

Greetings! I'm sure you're all sick of reading BSOD threads, but I'd very much appreciate your help. I'm getting BSoD's on a regular basis when playing video games that started on the 1st of April (worst joke ever). Before the format I also got 2-3 during startup shortly after getting to my desktop, but none since. They seem to happen within 10 minutes of gaming, but sometimes I can game for hours. Strangely I'm able to play another game that uses DirectX9 and 7 and only get crash to desktops instead of a delightful screen of blue. I've had several different kinds of BSoDs, unfortunately I don't have all the DUMP files since I formatted, but I've had a few since then. Also, I've had screen freezes (once) and a BSOD that was just a big blue background that made me hardboot. If anybody needs any info whatsoever, please ask me and I will provide.

Hey, I'm hoping to find some help here, if you have any ideas let me know.

So I built my first PC at the end of last year, it's been running great, no problems. Then a month ago, it started shorting out, I would power up and it would turn off 2 seconds later. I saved up some money, and got a new mother board thinking that was the problem. Turns out it wasn't and it was the power supply that had failed (corsair 600w) I don't know how it failed, but I am assuming a power surge, even though I don't remember one happening, and I have a surge protector board. But hey, so I bout a new 700w power supply, and this morning plugged it in. PC turns on, starts booting up, then gives me a lovely Disc boot error message, please insert recovery disc, blah blah blah. I thought maybe my hard drive got fried, so I threw in a brand new one. And attempted to install windows to it, I booted into windows install disc, but can't install because it recognises no hard drive being connected, the same thing it is doing to my original hard drive. I've opened the pc up and it doesn't seem like the hard drives are spinning, so I changed the power and sata cable running from the hard drives, still nothing. I'm stuck, any ideas?

A:A lovely disk boot failure

First off when replacing a power supply you need to match the voltage's. You said the original PSU was a 600w, but you replaced with a 700w, having a higher wattage power supply can make components such as the hard drive not power up. I would recommend trading out the 700w for a 600w and then try putting in the hard drive.

Also if you have one, try plugging the hard drive in question into a external hard drive enclosure, and see if it can be read on another computer. If it cannot, your issue is most likely the drive but if it reads normally then its just an issue of the hard drive receiving too much power and you will need to change out your power supply as noted above.

Best of luck to you

I have a DVD version of the game that came bundled with my video card. I can install it and the two patches and play the game without problems immediately after the install. Once I exit the game, however, and try to play again I get this errror: " Cannot load file D\bin\filesystem_stdio.dll". (Game is installed in the D partition of my HD) If I uninstall the game and reinstall I can play it again, but get the same problem once I exit. I wonder is this a Steam file?

I contacted Ubisoft tech support and they sent me a generic response about drivers and system requirements indicating to me that the didn't bother to read the problem before replying.
I have a retail copy of the game on another system and tried copying and replacing the above file without change. I realize it's somewhat of a specific problem, but I'm looking for ideas while waiting to hear from Ubisoft. That's if they respond again. My reply while not real bad definitely let them know that I didn't think they even tried to answer my problem.

A:Solved: My screen has gone dark

Initial thoughts are that the backlight has failed. When it starts up, and has gone dark, try shining a torch directly at the screen. If you can see the normal image (although will still be feint) then the backlight has probably gone.

This isn't an uncommon fault on laptops and can be fairly easy to fix on some machines, as long as you don't mind taking it apart a bit to get at it. If you are unsure I would recommend getting a professional to do it for you.

When I print a picture either from the web or from any other source, it prints too dark. This is true for both my Lexmark Pro 205 and my Canon Pixma 4200. (Win 7, fresh ink, latest firmware downloads). Programs printed with include MS Word, Audiolabel and others. Adjusting with Picasa helps, but tends to wash everything out if I get it light enough. Suggestions?

A:Solved: Print Is Too Dark

That's very common because of the two different methods for representing colors on screen and on paper. Often the discrepancy is exaggerated by a poorly calibrated monitor--too bright and too intensely saturated. Very little you can do to adjust printing but a lot you can do with the monitor display to first try and match printer output so you know how much brighter you need to make an image on the screen to have it print about the same brightness (all things equal it will still print a tad darker but an acceptable amount).

My PC uses Windows 7, which I hate. Let me begin by saying that I have cataracts on both eyes. My left eye is completely blind, and the right eye is getting really bad. My PC uses gray text for everyting except WordPad. It is so light that I can no longer rad my e-mail -- it is almost impossible for me to writ this question unless I put my right eye 2 or 3 inches away from the screen.

I have searched on line for what to do, and the instructions are too complicated for me to read. I have tried clicking on the desktop and working through the the "personalize" thing, but I can not find a simple control. The instructions for color calibration were gray on gray and I could not read anything at all. The monitor is Korean, and the controls for brightness, in addition to being in Korean, are in a window so small that I can not see them. Is there some way to bring up a Windows control where I just move a slider to the left or right to increase the contrast, darken text, and so forth?

I am sorry if this has been covered before. I can not read anything so I can not search for previous threads. If it has been, just giving the URLs of such threads may be enough to help me.

A big thank-you to anyone who can help.

A:[SOLVED] Making all the text as dark as possible on the whole PC.

There are high-contrast settings for the display as well as accessibility options that can help to make the screen more readable. People with vision issues can also benefit from using the magnifier which is also under the accessibility options.

It might help to have someone assist you in setting these options up.
