XP fileshare and ICS host with a host of problems

Q: XP fileshare and ICS host with a host of problems

I need help, not 30 lashes with a wet noodle. I feel stupid enough already.

I think I have a failed uninstall of Norton Internet Securities 2004 and I may not have completely removed MSN 9.0 either. The machine was handed down to me from my fifteen year old daughter, who feels that it has "a bunch of Trojans".

It is a Presario S5000NX running WinXP SP2. It has two XP clients, one of which can access the internet and be seen (usually) by other machines. The 95 client can be seen by all machines but cannot see any of them. The samba (Mandrake 10.1) client can't be seen but can (usually) see the host, 95 client, and one XP client, and can access the internet. The other XP client cannot be seen or go online, but can (usually) access files from (some of) the other computers. The samba client double-boots in Win2000 and can then access the host, 95 client, and accessible XP client, but cannot be seen. The 95 client cannot access the internet.

This ethernet LAN connectivity is subject to change without notice or apparent reason.

It is currently running AVG free and Sygate free; whenever I try to install stronger security software, I lose network connectivity (which is hardly perfect in the first place) and have to run an XP system restore.

I can also scan across the network with NOD32 on a client computer. Neither it nor AVG nor Ad-Aware nor Spybot turn anything up.

Let's start with a hijackthis log:

Preferred Solution: XP fileshare and ICS host with a host of problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have installed the Virtual XP mode.  A long time ago Virtual XP was fully running, with access to host resources (drives etc).  But my system underwent some software changes, and then Virtual XP could no longer
access the host resources.  After trying (unsuccessfully) all the tricks found on several forums, I decided to uninstall then reinstall Virtual XP, which I have just done.  But I still can't access host drives.  Here's how Virtual XP is set
up:
Workgroup name is set to the same as my host (confirmed in 'My Computer'/Properties/Name);
Networking 'Adapter 1' set to my host's NIC;  I have assigned a fixed IP address to the Virtual XP (this has worked previously; all devices on my Win7 network have fixed addresses, for good reason).

Integration Features has ticks in the boxes for those host drives I want to access from VXP.
I can successfully ping the host, via name or IP address;  I can successfully ping web sites by name (e.g. 'yahoo.com').  But when I open Windows Explorer and open the 'My Network Places' tree, it opens down to the name of my host workgroup, but
when I click on that workgroup name, after several seconds it pops up an error box saying: "<workgroupname> is not accessible.  You might not have permission to use this network resource.  <blah blah>.  The service has not been
started."
Any suggestions on how to get access to my host... Read more

IBM Connect Direct application used for Host to Host connectivity has been picked up as a Trojan Virus by some Microsoft Security Products including Defender, System Centre Endpoint Protection, System Centre Endpoint
Protection 2012 and Security Essentials.

The result is that Connect Direct is deleted by the security software.
Question: What will be the implication of excluding this from the security policy?

Greetings,

I need drivers for an old cable mark as (Wiretec)  USB host to host bridge which contain the chip GL620USB-A , It has color like Green and aboud 2 meters.

Does someone know where I can find a device driver so that USB will work. Right now only my USB host to host bridge is not recognized/enabled. I can't find anywhere a device driver; neither on the included CD(It's damaged) nor the internet.

If there's no driver available, are there any alternatives so.

I have a local area network of four Windows 7 PCs. The PCs are named Term1, Term2, Term3 and Term4.

Term1 is the server PC.

When I map to Term1 from the other Terms(2,3 and 4) I always used the command:
Net use F: \\Term1\c /user:Admin 1234

This worked fine before; now it suddenly refuses to connect this way ? I have to replace Term1 with the actual IP address of Term1 for it to work.

I
have tried the following Admin CMD commands:

netsh
int ip reset
ipconfig
/flushdns

All of these commands make no difference; I just can't connect using the server name (Term1).

What I strangely noticed is that from any of the terminals connected to Term1 (using the IP address); if I use, for example, ping Term1,
I get an address return of 127.0.0.1.home;
this address of 127.0.0.1.home will
display if I ping to Term2, Term3 or Term4.

I cannot find any solution on the web for this strange problem.

Hi All,

This is the first time I've had to post a question and not get my answer through searching various forums etc so I'd really appreciate any advice you can give. I don't really know what I'm doing so please bear with me!

I've got two HDD one which seems to store all programs etc and one which stores all media. I've turned my PC on today and i've seemingly lost everything on my media HDD apart from one DVD! Also all my settings have been lost and the computer started with it's original Packard Bell "Set up your computer" prompt.

All my programs are seemingly still there (although I had to reload Itunes from the net) yet my firewall reset it's permissions and sometimes when I connect to the internet (via broadband) a box pops up telling me it's trying to connect to my ISP via Dial up? Also Mozilla reset itself, causing me to lose all my bookmarks, add ons etc.

I would have said the media HDD had died, but why has this affected unrelated programs? To make it more confusing The disc size is 111GB and even with supposedly nothing on it, I can see 16GB is being used. Is that normal? The only thing I've done differently is load up and run Spybot a couple of weeks ago.

I keep Zonealarm up to date, run frequent checks via AVG and regularly clean/defreg the drives...I'm seriously confused and way out of my depth, someone please help!

when using dmz host on my router, my computer speeds drop from about 6000kbps to 1000 kbps. anyone have an idea as to why? the tech support people at linksys cant figure it out.

A:dmz host problems

Most likely your software firewall can't take the load.

DMZ means that all the incoming connections end up on your computer and if you are running some bells and whistles behemoth like ZoneAlarm or Norton then it will eat up a big chunk of your CPU cycles.

What firewall software do you have there? Make sure you don't have two of them running. Also, try uninstalling all other network filters like VPN or packet capture.

internet options sites restricted
hostman host files

spybot host files

Ok, I can add a website I never want to see again to all the above programs.
Sometimes I even get a message from my internet options that I've already
blocked that. Well, if it's blocked already--why does it come up? I can't understand
how it is possible for a specifically banned website to come up. It is my computer.
If I say don't let this site connect, why do I have to do a song and dance and add
more programs and read and read?

I understand the internet is a mess today and we have to throw out the garbage, but
why do we have to keep throwing out the SAME garbage? thanks for any help

This just happened to me today. I was looking at stuff on wikipedia when all of the sudden my whole computer freezes. I can move the mouse around, but I get no response from anything when I click on it.

I do a manual restart, windows loads up and the whole network ability on the computer seems to go haywire. Internet is non-existent on the computer now, and I have trouble loading up my linksys network configuration tool to fix it. I tried to uninstall linksys, it won't uninstall.

I reboot my computer to see if that works. The computer hangs on the blue "Windows is shutting down" screen (and has every time I've rebooted since) so I manual restart.

Windows loads the same deal is going on.

I plug in a USB Flash drive to load a disk cleanup program only to find out my USB ports do not work anymore, none of them do.

I tried to put my linksys disk in the cd-drive, and my cd-drive does not work.

Here's a quick rundown of problems that have arrived:

My network ability is non-functional
I'm having trouble uninstalling certain programs
My USB drives are not working
My cd-drive is not working
computer hangs on "Windows is shutting down" screen

I have not gotten any errors or blue screens since this started, but if I do I will make sure to post the error.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a host of problems with my laptop...

I called Microsoft about it and they said they'd charge me 600 dollars for this. I have to question, is it such that my computer's problems are so grave that it rightly cost hundreds of dollars to fix? Is this a fair and honest price, or is Microsoft taking advantage of my ignorance? Where do they come up with these numbers?

Anyway, here we go:

- Most recently, upon starting up my computer, it will frequently say, "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of 2."

So, I waited...

...and waited...

After 2 hours of the blue circle thing going round and round with no change, I decided to force a shut down and start it up again. This update thing comes up a lot.

- My computer is now extremely slow. It takes several minutes for any program to open - if it opens at all - and usually it doesn't. For instance, Skype doesn't work whatsoever. It's constantly "Not responding". Opening Skype on my laptop is like a domino effect - it'll screw everything else over. Usually nothing works after trying with Skype. I'll have to force a shut down then because I can't even get the start button to open.

- Windows Media Player gives me the same domino effect Skype does. I'll be watching a vid or listening to aud and it'll stop working every few minutes. It'll continue playing on the bar, but the song has stopped or the video has frozen. I... Read more

Ok. Where to start?

The most immediate problem effecting my computer right now is that when I log in, all I get is my background. I can move the mouse around, but no icons or start-bar. Ctrl+Alt+Delete does not do anything.

Booting up in Safe Mode to attempt a System Restore pops up a window saying: Click Yes to run diagnostic mode, click no to System Restore.

I don't recall seeing this pop up before. So, first I click NO since I want to system restore. It then tells me that "System Restore will not protect this computer. Please restart and attempt System Restore again." Of course, restarting does nothing, so I reboot in Safe Mode and click 'Yes'.

No Icons. No start bar in Safe Mode. Ctrl+Alt+Dlt does work and when i enter 'msconfig' and click "System Restore" I get that same message again.

Any suggestions?

Also, I have dual video cards with SLI Technology. However, whenever they are enabled, they freeze my computer when I am playing whatever game, also emitting a high pitched beeeeeeeeep sound. I've updated drivers whenever available and it does not resolve the problem.

Also, a little background. I've had the computer for maybe 6 months and got it from Alienware. It didn't turn on straight out of the box, and the Image CD was corrupted and they never sent me the Drivers CD. So straight away, I had to reinstall windows and all of the drivers. It still says one of the drivers is missing, and the Alienware Help Desk couldn't figure it ... Read more

First, you need to clean the Malware OR do a clean install.

If the former, please read the following article and post anew in the Spyware secvtion;

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

If you opt to do a clean install, get the specifics of your motherboard so you can pre-download the necessary drivers and transfer them to CD.

That can be done using Belarc or Everest.

We are having a few problems recently. We have computer knowledge and most of this stuff we can normally fix ourselves but this one seems to be different. For about the last week, quite a few sites that we visit have been blank. dictionary.com, another computer help site, etc. Also, we can't play any online games. At first, we thought it was Java but it's not. We run AVG, adaware and spybot regularly and they aren't picking up anything that fixes this problem. On some sites that we regularly visit, when we go to click on a link, it will take us to coolsearchbiz\404.php and if we hit back on the browser, it will do the same thing. It also installs viruses and puts things in our favorites that we don't want. Any suggestions??

I am using Windows XP home edition.

I posted this in the wrong forum, a few days ago: and was advised to post it here,
with a new hjt log. They did say that I had more serious problems than just my host file needing to be restored. They also said that there didn't seem to be a firewall. How can I find out if I'm using Window's firewall?

Arovax Shield popped up a message: "Warning: Your Windows host file was hijacked. It is recommended to restore host file."

1. Now I can't use my anti-virus program, because it stalls (freezes) before it finishes.

2. I can't use Panda or any other on-line scanner, because it too freezes before it can
finish.

3. I can't shutdown my computer - not even cold boot! I have to completely unplug it!

4. I can't do a system restore, to a previous date. (I've tried several previous dates).

I have no idea how to restore the host file, and I have no idea how it was hijacked.

I have a host-host VPN set up between a Cisco SR520 router and a PIX 515E. Connection at my end is AT&T DSL, static IP, netopia DSL modem. Don't know the service at the other end, but I do know it is a web hosting company.

I can ping the designated host computer at the other end via the VPN tunnel. They cannot reliably ping my end. If I have ping -t running to the other end, a ping coming my way works. Otherwise, not. The last two Cisco techs I have spoken with have no clue (and they have logged into both routers to examine the configuration).

Early on, we had a 2Wire DSL modem. AT&T acknowledged that its SPI firewall can be problematic. They recommended the netopia as being more transparent. Its firewall has been totally disabled.

Suggestions?

A:Host - Host VPN not symetric

When you can't ping through the tunnel, how long is it after the last session through the tunnel? Did you do a show crypto isakmp sa to see if the tunnel is still up? Depending on the settings of the keep alives and hellos over the tunnel, the tunnel could have been brought down due to inactivity. But normally, the tunnel should just re-establish itself on the next keep alive/hello interval. If the tunnel is down, it will take a minute or so before traffic moves across the tunnel again due to the overhead of the tunnel being brought up.

What is your exact network layout? Are you doing a remote VPN configuration or a LAN to LAN (site to site) configuration where the VPN tunnel is between the SR520 and the 515E. The above assumes you are doing a LAN to LAN tunnel. Also, is the DSL modem you have bridged or still operating as a router. If it is still operating as a router, you should turn the modem into a pure modem and not a modem/router.

A few weeks ago, I updated the drivers for my graphics card, an ATI Radeon 9250, and since then, I've been getting a Found New Hardware Wizard when I boot up. I'm not sure if that is related to the problems that followed.

A few days ago, I set a scheduled task to shut down my computer every day at 6:30 am because I was tired of having to remember it. The first day that it shut down this way, when I booted it back up, everything was wrong.

It took a very long time to boot, say 10-15 minutes. Even then, things were very slow and tended to crash. The start menu didn't load for even longer than that, and when it finally did, it worked intermittently. But that wasn't the strangest part.

If I go to My Computer > Properties, where it normally would show RAM and processor speed is BLANK. All the other information is there, OS and Computer Name and such, but then it says Computer: and nothing is underneath it.

All this is still happening. Trying to open a new program takes a very long time, but once it opens it runs fine. I am thinking maybe I should just reformat, but it seems an awful lot of trouble to go to if there is something much simpler.

All this is brand new, everything seemed fine the day before, ran quickly, etc. I do everything I can to keep this computer running smoothly, I defrag, disk cleanup, virus scan, etc often.

If I open task manager using ctrl-alt-delete it does it instantly. This is the only thing I've tried that works quickly ... Read more

Hello, I'm Mike I am very knew to this site I was reading many posts other users had written related to what I'm about to describe. I have confidence from the technical answers given them that my problem can be solved to. The only other resort I have is to reload my computer. To begin, I believe my problem started with XP Home Security 2011 which obviously is a spoof spyware program trying to emulate true software. Anyway the program started shutting down executable files that I would try to run giving warning messages that it was in my best interest to stay away. Somehow, I believe the program is eradicated but completely I'm not sure. Then, in my task manager I noticed ping.exe was constantly running, particularly when I was connected to the net. I used registry editor to set denied permissions on the program and moved the file to another folder for a temporary fix. Prior to doing this, I tried to delete the file numerous times but to no avail because it would continue to replicate or rewrite itself. I tried the delete method because I don't personally ping and I know its a network diagnostic tool. So the ping prob is temporarily dormant. I have bigger problems pertaining to the fact that I can't successfully open the Security center in the Control Panel without getting a message asking me to restart the program. On advice from other forums I went under computer management/Services and Apps/Services to restart the program and lo and behold S... Read more

Hi Everyone,I hope this is the correct place to post this question. I am having a heck of a time with my computer (numerous problems) and I am hoping someone can help. The problem is beyond my knowledge. My system is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, on a Dell Inspiron 1525 2.00BG RAM. I would like to give you some background before launching into the problems and solution attempts. Last year I had a terrible virus that nearly destroyed my computer. I couldn't get the root kit out. I called Dell and they had someone access my computer remotely--that was the worst thing that I could have ever done. That person crashed my computer and I ended up with the black screen of death and it wouldn't start. I took it to a person  and they were able to eventually remove the virus after having the machine over 2wks, however my hardrive had been compromised and to keep the computer running, he had to remove a sector on my hard rive. It has worked fine ever since, but has the clicking sound and gets hot from time to time. I have it up on corks and it has maintained well, until a few weeks ago when I started having a myriad of problems. My computer will work fine if you turn it on and just surf the internet. However, the instant I try to run any antivirus it freezes (even in safe-mode). It will also freeze randomly on the internet and if it goes to screen saver, it just goes to black screen and is unresponsive. When I try to use ctrl+alt+delete {even in safe mode} the computer will eit... Read more

Hello there, I've finally gotten round to registering here and asking something because I've run out of ideas about some troubles with Windows.

My install is 7 Premium the 64 bit edition and recently I've been experiencing problems as follows.

It all started with the network which, as you can see in the image below, has the regular connection connected and no Internet available and an imaginary one that keeps connecting.

My computer only has one NIC installed and the connection is done like so: Modem>Router>Computers. The network also holds a Windows XP computer and that has no issues.

The weird thing is as follows, Windows 7 says I'm not connected to any network, yet the NIC gets an ip and I do have Internet access

This lead me on towards looking into the situation and it seems that I opened up Pandora's box. Basically, the Workstation and Computer Browser will not start. CB doesn't start because WS isn't on and WS errors 1067 back at me.

Trying to fix the error I ran sfc /scannow and when it finished I got to find out that there were errors it couldn't fix. The CBS.log file is enormous and mine is... full of errors.

Attachment 149498

Please take a look and tell me if there's anything I can do to fix it?

Thanks.

P.S. Upon restart, the second imaginary connection disappeared, the remaining real one still says I have no network access but I'm online.

A:A host of problems - related?

Thank you for moving to the appropriate section.

I'd like to follow up with some extra information and another photo.

Event viewer is loaded with errors, just today:

"The Workstation service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 17 time(s)."

Clearly that's my problem but I can't seem to find anything done to it.

Also, here's the situation right now, as is most of the time.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and MSN 9 Dial-Up. I also have Windows Live Hotmail, which I never asked for, and which doesn't communicate with MSN, confusing the whole issue. Any assistance anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated. This has been going on for about one week and has been giving me fits of frustration. Thanks in advance. Auntalee

Okay, I've googled around and such to figure out this problem, but to no avail. Maybe you people here can help me out.

A few weeks ago my speakers suddenly stopped working. Well, they kept going on and off, and I kept getting a pop-up saying something along the lines of "Host Process for Windows Services was closed." or something.

I've tried everything, including replacment speakers, looking online for an updated version of my driver (because I read somewhere that maybe my driver was too outdated for Vista), but nothing works. My speakers still don't work.

I'm sure I'm probably not the only person with this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While browsing a review website for video cards, Antivirus 2010 installed itself in the background. I without really thinking just went for a straight normal uninstall. Now I whenever I run any antivirus program, the moment it hits a file associated with the program, it immediately blocks access to the program. Another issue that came along with it is a svchost.exe in my task manager that has no process description, and when I try to Open File Location, nothing will open. I have checked the internet for guides on removal, but they are all outdated, and the program most recommended by them, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, is no longer effective. A side note on this is when I look at the Windows 7 Resource Manager, if I try to put a check mark on the process, it will block Resource Monitor as well.

OS: Windows 7 Professional
Programs that were blocked on use: Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 trial, Spybot S&D, HijackThis, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware.

Is there any known solution to this version of Antivirus 2010?

Hi all! I'm not sure just where to post this. If this isn't the place please advise . . .

I?ve moved my WordPress sites to iPage from JustHost. Before I moved them, they were already giving me the. WSOD - White Screen of Death. Tried the solutionssuggested at WordPress.org with no success, i.e. renaming plugins folder and renaming current theme so it reverts to the default WP theme. Figured I would just move them andwork on that out later. The sites themselves showed up, I just couldn?t log into do anything.

After I backed everything up and moved them, I got the internal server error.Databases have the same names as before but I realized that I had changedusernames and pw for them, so I tried to fix it by editing thewp-sample-config.php for the root directory?used HTML Kit to edit it?renamed itand uploaded it. Nothing. Checked thefolders for the rest of my sites and discovered that some of them have awp-config.php file and some don?t.

I started a thread at WordPress.org yesterday morning and was happy to get a quick response even though I'd forgotten to title my post. (It was later titled for me.)

I wastold that all my sites' folders need a wp-config file. But we?d work first on main site. Said to delete the htaccess file from the root directory. I think he also said to delete the wp-config.php file as well. There was no htaccess file in the root directory. I deleted the wp-config file. 500 is a generic error which tells us nothing first step is ti check any server logs to see if they give more detail there is often another code after 500 which gives more clues. Wont the hosting site give support?

There are lots of reasons why your site might be serving a 500 Error to your users, but two are most common:

A Permissions Error. In most cases, a 500 Internal Server Error is due to an incorrect permission on one or more files or folders. In most of those cases, an incorrect permission on a PHP and CGI script is to blame. These should usually be set at 0775 (-rwxr-xr-x).A PHP Timeout. If your script connects to external resources and those resources timeout, an HTTP 500 error can occur. Timeout rules, or better error handling in your script, should help if this is the cause of the 500 error.A Coding Error in .htaccess. While not as common, be sure to check that your site's .htaccess file is properly structured.
First thing I would do as a quick test is make a very simple webpage upload it as index.htm or what ever is set as default see if you can see that just do one site. If you can see the webpage we know there is no problem with dns etc how long ago did you move it as it can take 48+ hours for dns to settle?

This isn't a major problem but I would like it to boot up without having to press F1. The scanner that uses the card works just great, and there are no other noticeable problems. What am I missing here?

A:SCSI Host Adapter problems

Well, that usually means that there is some kind of memory conflict with the card.

Maybe with a sound card or modem you have installed... can you try taking out all cards but video and the SCSI? See if the problem goes away? You don't need to let it go into Windows of course - the error happens long before that.

Try deleting or renaming the Hosts file.
It will be recreated, so no harm to try.
It's at:

It's named "HOSTS- no extension.
You can open this file with Notepad of you're curious enough to see what it says.

Recently, my Alien laptop began having problems with internet connectivity. Google Chrome and IE are often not able to resolve addresses - about 90% of the time. Chrome will be stuck on "resolving host..." and then eventually give the error, server DNS address cannot be found.

Sometimes the browsers are able to resolve addresses especially if the computer has not been used for several days, it will easily connect to the internet and perform downloads for several minutes until it begins to have problems again.

Some applications that connect to the internet seem to have more problems than others. Steam seems slower at times but mostly unaffected. Origin's game portal is unable to connect.

I have attempted the solutions listed here ... http://www.webnots.com/correct-chrome-resolving-host-issue/ ... with no success.

I have licensed Hitman Pro and Malwarebytes. Both updated and ran with no issues.

The network I am on has not changed recently and two other computers are using it without a problem so the router does not seem to be the issue.

Not sure if this is a virus but I have read about DNS hacks and I was worried.

Again thanks for any help.
