Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

Q: Realtek Ac97 Audio "this Device Cannot Start. (code 10)"

HP Pavillion zx5000
Intel Pentium 4
3.20 GHz
1 GB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition SP 3

My friend's laptop is having trouble recognizing its sound driver (Realtek AC97). The hard drive was replaced and the operating system reinstalled a couple months ago, and ever since then it hasn't been able to play sound. Under the Device Manager, Realtek AC'97 Audio has a yellow exclamation point next to it, and under its Device Status it reads "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device, as well as downloading the most recent driver (the most recent I could find was 4.04), but to no avail. I'm not sure what else I can do at this point.

On other boards that I've looked at people have asked what motherboard was being used. I used Everest to find the following information under "Motherboard":

Motherboard:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 3200 MHz (16 x 200)
Motherboard Name Hewlett-Packard Pavilion zx5000 (DZ313U#ABA)
Motherboard Chipset ATI Radeon 9100 IGP
System Memory 1024 MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)
BIOS Type Phoenix (02/16/04)
Communication Port ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

OK you probably thought of this first thing but don't laugh when I ask: after the clean install, did your friend run the motherboard disk for his machine? Because the AC97 drivers are on that cd. He should disable it in "devices' and install the driver from the mobo cd and then enable it again and reboot. Should have sound. Only other thing is it could be disabled in the bios - you could check that too.

Hey hello everyone, I am new member here. I already checked couple threads with this same title, but I didn't really find any solution.

Here's a thing. Yesterday I went to clean my computer for dust, so I opened case and unplugged all wires. Now everything is backup except there is no sound. In device manager I got that yellow/black '!' next to Realtek AC3'97 Audio. I reinstalled drivers couple times already, but nothing. I mean, I was just cleaning dust...

So I came up with that idea that it might be the problem with the front panel pins, which I probably connected in wrong ways. I don't even know in which way those pins should be facing when connecting. So the motherboard is Asus A8N5X (from 2005, yea old), computer runs on Windows XP SP3. I tried many combinations with those pins, but nothing. I get that yellow/black '!' next to device or I get nothing at all (it won't show the device at all).

I tried reading the manual, but the wire names are different on the actual wires than shown in the manual:

And the names on wires are:

GND (black wire)
GND (black wire)
Mic Bias (yellow)
Mic In (green)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout L (red)
Spkout R (white)
Spkout R (white)

As you can see names duplicates. So I tried various combinations, but nothing. Once looked like I fixed it, after loading Windows up, there was sound icon in the tray, but PC suddenly restarted and next time there was no audio again.

Like I said I unplugged all wires befo... Read more

I'm having an issue I've had before, and found the resolution for... But can't find it again.

Symptoms: Flash programs, like the sound for the MMO I tried logging into, and the part of an online job application that has a "play" button to listen to a scenario then answer the questions from what you heard... won't play. Problem wasn't there lasntight, it's there today. Winamp, etc. will still play audio. System sounds won't play. Alert sounds used to play a chime but now play the alert tone from the pc.

All drivers are updated and correct. This is a setting somewhere that needs to be fixed, I just don't remember what setting. Some people with this problem report that it fixed itself after a while, but I don't have time to sit and count on that.

I know a new piece of hardware won't fix it... It's an issue in the computer settings somewhere.

Steps taken:
Originally when I went to device manager it showed everything as working.
Down in the system tray I had the volume icon, but when I tried to left click, nothing happened.
When I went to right click>open volume controls, it gave an error saying there were no mixing devices.
Checked that realtek is set to mixing, and checked all drivers.
Went into control panel>sounds and audio devices: no audio device, and no option to set one as default.
I went into services.msc and audio's set to automatic already.
I disabled th... Read more

Hello,

Recently, I installed this Windows XP Professional SP2 on my comp. Once done, I am not been able to install my audio drivers for Realtek High Definition Audio. I couldn't understand what the problem is. Before, they were working fine, now since I had re-installed the Windows again, the whole thing came into being. I had done reinstalling the Windows several times now.

The drivers for the device are installed. But it says the device cannot start.[Code 10].

I had done loads of things, such as :

1. Reinstalling the drivers after uninstalling the same.
2. Rebooting as appropriate.
3. Surf through different sites to check, what best I can do, to tackle the whole thing. But nothing so far.

Hopefully someone be able to tell me, what to do.....

I need my sound back, as my work is completely hung up without it.....

Thankx......

Maybe you have too many other programs running, that are using up your memory/CPU ?
Although looking at your specs that should not be a problem.

These could be legit programs or spyware programs.

Go into msconfig/start up and uncheck everything except firewall/AV

Look in the Task Manager and see if anything is running that doesn`t need to be running.
On most people`s PCs,that`s at least half of them.

I have a Realtek AC97 Audio Sound card. It came in a package with the mainboard etc. I installed the driver and the sound seemed to work fine, when I was not actually making the computer "think". But when i started a game or any other program where the computer had to do alot of loading and processing to do, it started lagging. It sounded as if I am talking to someone over my cellphone, and I am in an area with low connection, so that i only hear bits and bobs from what is being said. The only difference is that I do here everything but in a sort of cut to pieces slow motion sound.
I tried updating the Sound card's driver, it made it a little worse, so i rolled it back. I checked on the Soltek website (producer of my mainboard and soundcard) (www.soltek.com.tw). There it said that i'd have to update the Bios because there was a problem with the Bios and Windows XP Service pack 2, and that that will fix it. I don't know that much bout the BIOS and I don't know what it has to do with the Soundcard but, when i start up my computer it says BIOS is not installed. So i tried to update it, but that only works in DOS. But in DOS, my Harddrives don't get recognized, so i sit there with my little floppy, with the files on it, but not able to update the BIOS, because it tells me error 3 missing file.

Hi All,

I've just joined and need to update my profile with my hardware details but for the moment I'll just say it's in relation to my A-Bit motherboard and the Realtek AC97 on board audio.

When trying to capture audio streams from Monty Python's Holy Grail (Camelot song) I noticed that there is only what can be described as a "wee-woo"in in the background.

Usually this noise is un-noticable but increasing the volume and editing the wave causes this to become really prominent.

Can anyone tell me if this is a standard problem with the onboard sound or if this is something I can resolve by updating the drivers?

Hope someone can help as it's really annoying.

Thanks.

I have an integrated Realtek AC97 soundcard on my Acer Aspire 3000 (motherboard chipset SiSM760GX) laptop running Windows XP. Sometime in the last 3 months, some problems started occuring with the soundcard. When I play any audio (streaming/mp3/etc), the sounds starts to distort and crackle after a few minutes. Eventually, the audio 'slows down' as if the audio is running at half speed. These both happen intermittently. The effect is present on the onboard speakers, headphones, external speakers.

I've updated the audio driver and video driver, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the audio and video card, slowing down hardware acceleration, but nothing seems to work. I have a feeling something happened after a Windows XP update a few months ago.

Here's some info on the AC97 Configuration:
Driver Version: 5.10.0.6050
DirectX Version: 9.0c
Audio Controller: SiS(7012)
AC97 Codec: ALC203

Could just be a lousy microphone.
Have you tried the microphone on a different computer or tried a different microphone?
Would try this first since it would at least give you an idea if the problem is the microphone or a computer sound issue.

Would also check to see if there are updated drivers for the Realtek AC97 at your computer manufacturer's site.

Windows 10 is CLEAN installed on a NEW HARD DRIVE. I DID NOT upgrade, windows 10 was clean installed from a disk.

Hi: Yes, that is the Intel HDMI audio device that is having a problem. See if this works...right click on it, and select uninstall. Check the Uninstall Driver box and restart the PC. Hopefully the HDMI audio driver will reinstall itself properly. If not, I have one other trick up my sleeve.

I am having a problem isolating an indication in the Device Manager with the High Definition Audio Device. I have Intel Graphics with this machine. The OS is W10 Pro. I loaded the audio driver for Windows 7 64 bit, but that did not make any difference. The Device Manager indicates that "This device cannot start (Code 10)" Driver Date 7/9/2015 / Version - 10.0.10240.16384 / Microsoft Driver Details Tab - Value = High Definition Audio Device From the Events Tab - (Information)Device HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_8086&DEV_2804&SUBSYS_80860101&REV_1000\4&36c4990c&0&0301 requires further installation.     Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Hi @JS2045 The problem HD audio device you are seeing is the Intel HDMI audio device that needs a driver. I looked around for a W10 driver for the hardware ID you posted, and can't find one. You don't need that device unless you want/need audio through the display port. The only suggestion I can offer would be to try the W7 Intel graphics driver from your notebook's support and driver page, but install it this way...so that you just target the problem audio device... Download, but don't run this graphics driver... http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=4095873&swItemId=ob_127914_1&swEnvOid=4059 Download and install this free file utility.  64 bit is the second file listed. http://www.7-zip.org/ After you install 7-zip, right click on the graphics driver file you downloaded, and select 7-zip from the list of items. Have 7-Zip Extract to: and let it extract the driver to the folder name (sp64360). Go to the device manager and click on the problem Intel HD audio device needing the driver. Click on the driver tab.  Click on Update Driver. Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder 7-Zip created. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and see if the driver installs that way. Then reboot. If you explore the driver folder 7-zip created, and open the DisplayAudio folder, you will find the setup informa... Or, does anyone know how to find out the answer to this. I want to know for gamnig purposes. I'm trying to install Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None, and it gets to about 80% installed and then stops. Looking at the requirements, this is the only thing I can think of that might be a problem. Any advice? Thx.

A:Is RealTek AC97 audio 16-bit sound blaster compatible?

There are very few games that actually require a soundcard and the installer would most certainly tell you if it didn't find the needed hardware.

Try some basic things like disabling any antivirus programs, copying the CD contents to the hard drive and installing from there, installing in safe mode.

Hi,

I have a Toshiba satelite A30 with a Realtek ac97 audio device.
The audio has been working fine for a few years now, but has recently been producing poor quality sound, like it is saturated.
I have been playing with sound volume, have reinstalled the latest drivers as well as the latest version of directX, but still experience the same problem.
I have also checked if there was a hardware conflict, but nothing shows...

can it be that the hardware is damaged, and i need to buy an external sound card or can this be solved otherwise?

thanks for anyone's help.

thomas

where can I find instructions in the use of the settings for AC97 Audio Configuration screens. What they mean and how/why I should set them.
Also a guide to the buttons on the AVRack recording screens would be good.

I am a complete novice at this using pc's and music together although I do know my way around computers and the internet. I have managed to get my tape cassette deck recording to the pc without any noises or problems using the AC97 but I am stumbling about a bit with the configuration settings.

Is there somewhere I can see a tutorial ?. cannot find any readme or online information anywhere.

thank you for any help you can give me ..

After many many tries and a couple reformats, I've decided to ask for help instead of trying fixes that have yet to work.

I got this laptop about a week ago from Radio Shack. It came with vista preinstalled and had so much stuff I did not want. I wanted XP cause I have had a fair share of experience with both Vista and XP to come to say Vista is a gigantic resource hog. I wanted to go back to XP because I'm an avid gamer and most gamers use XP.

I downgraded and found all the drivers, and my computer flew. EXCEPT, it had no sound.

I've tried drivers for every laptop known to man and have seen many people fix theirs, but to no avail, none have worked.

I've tried the HD hotfix and it is currently installed.

My Computer Specs: Gateway m-1629

* AMD Turion? 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-60 (2.0GHz, 512KBx2 L2 Cache), up to 1600MHz HTT
* 250GB SATA hard drive
* ATI Radeon® X1270 with up to 256MB of HyperMemory?
* 8x multi-format dual-layer DVDRW with DVD-RAM
* Integrated 1.3-megapixel webcam
* 3GB DDR2 667MHz memory installed, 4GB maximum supported

A:Audio Device Cannot Start (Code 10)

You need to find out the details of your chipset (Northbridge and Southbridge - the Southbridge is, I believe, the critical one re audio.

Then find through Google a mobo that has that sepecific set of chips and try and find XP drivers for that.

Hi there,

Not a computer expert by any means and would really appreciate your help. I tried to download a 'DVD decoder' that would enable me to watch a DVD that wasn't working on Windows Media the other day. This still didn't work and gave me a far more frustrating problem as well....

The sound has now gone and I have a yellow explanation mark next to my audio device (in device manager) and the device status says 'This device can not start (Code 10)'.

My computer is as follows:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Version 2002, Service Pack 3
Model: T7870
AMD Athlon(tm) 64X2 Dual
Core Processor 4200+
2.20 GHZ
1.00 GB of RAM

I have tried de-installing and re-installing, got rid of any new downloads, checked for Viruses (using Kapersky), checked the wires and done everything on Windows Troubleshooter a number of times!

I saw a few other threads on this and it all resulted in the poster having to buy a new sound card. Mine is built into my system and this all seems quite fiddly and could cause me to do further damage. Has anyone else got any further advice before I go ahead and do this?

Thanks in advance for any advice given. It is much appreciated!

Sounds like the driver needs updating go to manufacturers website and download the latest drivers to your desktop and unpack the driver to your desktop then go into device manager and right click on the sound card select properties and update driver and follow the hard ware wizard and locate the driver you downloaded.
