Solved: Outlook Express main window's gone!

Q: Solved: Outlook Express main window's gone!

On outlook express, when it first opens, the main window has gone, which has a link to MSN Explorer i think, and says how many unread email messages you have. Is there anyway to get it back, because I liked it better than opening on to a blank white screen, or my inbox. Thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have posted before about this but under the heading Virus/spyware.
My Outlook Express keeps opening a new message window all by itself. I can't figure out what is causing it to open. I'm not busy with anything when it does, it just opens by itself.
I have done spyware scans and anti-virus scans till it came out my ears.
One of the moderators here have helped me with an HiJack This log and cleaned all the baddies out. It still happens though.
Anyone with any suggestions??

I added three new e-mail address to my outlook express program. My original address is the default address for start up. Program will not authorize, so I cannot recieve e-mail or use outlook.
The e-mail program starts by it self when the computer boots up. Pop up keeps asking for user name and password, which are on pop up. I hit OK it goes away for a few seconds then returns.
E-mails are on Main Identy page, yet there is not properties for Main Identy.
I have been working on this for hours with no success.

Do you mean that instead of just having three accounts in one identity ; you decided to create seperate identities for each account?
In this case, yes it will ask you to provide a username and password if you set it up that way.

For some reason in Outlook Express I have an identity called "Main Identity" that appears that wasn't listed before as one of my identitiies. When I try to delete the identity in Manage Identities, it will not let me delete it. When I click the remove button it brings up the message saying "Are you sure you want to remove this idenity?..." and then I click the delete button to go ahead and do it....however, NOTHING happens when I do this. If I try to switch to that identity it brings up an error message saying "Identity Switch Canceled." This identity has never been set up for use for anything and it won't let me change the properties to it or anything. Nothing happens when I click on properties for this identity under manage identites. All I want to do is to GET RID of this identity. It is used for nothing and I can't get rid of it. And by the way, my default identity (the identity used when starting Outlook Express is NOT this identity). Anyone have any suggestions on how to get rid of this "Main Identitiy"

When sending attachments in Outlook Express 6, attachments end up as both an attachment and in the main body.

This is regardless if 'Tools' 'Options' 'Send' settings for mail setting format is set to HTML or Plain Text and when set to HTML, 'Send Pictures With Messages' is unchecked.

Is there any way to toggle OFF a setting that will result in the attachment not being included in the main text body?

I'm on Win98 reg, not the SE version. I upgraded my Internet Explorer from 5.0 to 5.01

I use my Outlook Express for my work email and personal email (hotmail) accounts.
Since I've upgraded IE, I now have this MSN Window at the bottom of the screen in Outlook Express. It's not the "Preview Pane", that was the first thing I checked.
It only shows itself when I click on my Hotmail Accts.

Does anyone know how to get rid of this pesky thing?

Thanks,

A:Getting rid of MSN window in Outlook Express

Hi unoIT

The advertising window is a part of Hotmail with Outlook Express versions higher than 5.0, clicking on another folder outside of Hotmail or opening a message will refocus or cover (respectively) the advertising window.

There is a small utility called OEAdKill.exe you can download, you would need to use a search engine to locate it as I do not have the url available.

Edited to add:

Finally fixed - she had a different monitor hooked up a while ago and it was showing up as a second monitor, and somehow she moved the MSN main window to the other screen.
For the past few weeks, the main window of Windows Live Messenger will not open. I am signed in automatically when I log onto my computer, and I can send messages if I right click on the Messenger icon in the tray and choose "Send an Instant Message", but if I choose "Open MSN Messenger", the window just doesn't appear. The window name does appear at the bottom of my screen in the task bar, but if I click on it or alt-tab between my open windows, the window won't appear.

I tried repairing the installation, uninstalling and reinstalling it. I finally gave up and uninstalled it to try an older version of MSN Messenger, and it's happen with MSN Messenger 7 too.

I tried googling but couldn't find anything related to this problem. If I didn't explain this very well or if I didn't include enough information, please let me know. I'm using Windows XP, if it matters.

Thank you for any help or suggestions you can provide.

People, I have a new laptop, with Outlook Express instead of Outlook. No problems with that, OE is enough for my simple needs, but I have a problem with how "Outlook Express" displays itself to me. Please excuse the non-technical description, but.....

Whenever I open an e-mail, write a new one, add a new contact, etc, the "activity" opens in a "mid-size" window, ie less than the full size of the screen. To enlarge it to full-size, I have to use the button at the top right of the window. Is the any way I can configure Outlook Express, Windows XP Pro or whatever, so this happens automatically?

TIA

Ian

A:Window Size (in Outlook Express"

Instead of using the 'maximise' button in the top corner, use your mouse to "left-click and drag" any of the four sides or corners of the window until it's the size you want (place mouse curser right on the window-edge and it'll change to a double-headed arrow, now left-click and drag with left-button held down. Do the same with any corner.

Setting window sizes like that should "stick" , whereas using the 'maximise' button does not.

I think this will work just like resizing any window in explorer. Open OE. Then use your cursor arrows to stretch it to maximize. Do not use the buttons at the right top corner to close or maximize. Now close OE by using file, exit. Open OE again. See if it now opens maximized. If it worked, the top buttons are okay to use now.

To remember the password in OE:

OE-Tools-Accounts-Mail tab-highlight your account-choose Properties. Go to the Server Tab. There should be a place to check Remember password. Check it.

Hi,
can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

Sorry if this has been asked a million times. I tried searching for the answer in the forum to no avail.

I have windows xp and am using Outlook Express 6 (on one of my computers, and I know others having the same problem on similar setups).

It is retarded if Microsoft would not let us resize or modify or enlarge or expand or maximize (providing food for future forum searchers, ) the insert attachment window. I guess they would do that in order to give an incentive to upgrade to the non-express outlook programs (which don't seem to have any such limitation). But still, that's lame. Hopefully it's just me that's lame and retarded.

I also would like to change the default view for the window to "details," but can't seem to be able to do that either.

If someone could shed some light on this it would be mucho appreciated. And sorry again if this has been asked and answered ad nausium.

The thing is I have even tried copying the DBX files from the old machine to the new machine and importing them from a directory on the new machine. I stil get the same message!

Another strange thing is the impor facility on OE6 does not provic an option import OE5 files, only OE4 & OE6.

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

thx

Hi,

I just launched my email and I've lost everything. It looks like a whole new program has launched (Outlook Express 6), whereas I used to have Outlook 2003. The only thing I can think of is I needed to find my email password to set up email on my mobile, so I went to Start/Programs, but all I could find was Outlook Express 6. Perhaps an automatic update has taken place. Anyway, I went to Tools/Accounts/double clicked on my username/Servers, but the password was blanked out. I therefore killed the program, but when I hit the email button on my keyboard to launch Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6 launched, which has no emails at all.

The only thing I can think that has changed since yesterday is my Norton 360 Antivirus software expired today and I intend buying an update tomorrow. Perhaps there's a connection? What do you think happened, are my old emails stored somewhere, and how can I restore Outlook 2003?

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 Suddenly Replaced by Outlook Express 6

When you launched Outlook express do you remember that box that came up and said something along the lines of:

"outlook express is currently not your default mail application, do you want it to be?"
and you clicked yes without reading it properly...?

Well it has done exactly that. You have two email apps on your computer, one of them has to be default. when you did that you changed it to outlook express. Luckily for you it is easy to fix.

All you need to do is go into the Start menu and find Outlook 2003 and run it. It will prob be under All programs > Microsoft Office> Outlook. Run it and then you will get the same prompt as you did for outlook express about making it the default app, choose yes to this. This will now make Outlook 2003 your default email app again and fix your problem.
Let us know if this works.

Hi,
Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

If the Timeout error persists with the Server Timeout set to 5 minutes, try disabling AVG from checking outgoing emails.

Double click the AVG icon in the System Tray.
Right click the E-mail Scanner component,
Properties > Plugins tab > Configure button
Uncheck: Check outgoing mail
OK, OK to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

I carefully followed all the steps for converting from OE 6 to Outlook 2003. I have just only one email account, so I have one password. After all the neccesary steps were followed to convert to Outlook, I used that same password and saved that for Outlook. (Outlook came pre-installed on the desktop with Microsoft Office 2003).

Now, I have OE 6 and Outlook 2003 both running at the same time. OE6 can receive email as well as Outlook. And they can both send email. I don't understand how to disable OE6 because I don't want to use it any longer.

What do I need to do to have only Outlook 2003 running as my email account?

Hello

I have had issues with my OE the last couple of days with it locking up as soon as I open it. So I decided to use Outlook 2000 but while making the transfer, I BELIEVE it used another identity on my computer and did not transfer all of my OE folders.

I know these are dbx files..they are currently located by going thru the windows explorer procedure..is there a way for me to get them into Outlook 2000? I also understand Outlook 2000 uses a different format for it files.

Also, if I upgrade to XP SP2, will I get my Outlook Express back and working?

Thanks for your help...

Todd

Greetings:

Here is the dilemma du jour:

Client using MS OE. We are setting up a new computer for her, and she will now be using Outlook. She has amassed hundreds of emails and saved them in folders in OE. She now wants the same folders and those emails imported into her new machine and into MS Outlook. I was sucessful in importing the address book, but that was all. They are not using MS Exchange server.

Guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I've installed Office 2003 on my PC - all working fine, mail migrated to Outlook etc. However, when I send an attachment from any program (Excel, Word etc) using the File, Send To command (which I have to do, because one is an Access database and so it's an embedded command) it defaults to Outlook Express.

I've tried renaming the msimn.exe file, which merely greyed out all of the options in the Send To box.

Anyone know how I can get them all to look to Outlook?

Thanks

Karn

I am an old guy. I tend to like Outlook Express. Some years ago I finally got it customized in terms of text size and layout the way I like. I am used to it. But, it seems to have some kind of fatal flaw - that every year or so MS OUtlook Express's InBox gets corrupted and makes either or both sending or receiving email no longer possible. It is as if after working properly for a year or two the InBox file gets to a certain size and goes haywire. Is there any remedy for this? Is there a more stable version of Outlook Express or another mail program that is very similar but more stable than OE that I can import my settings into?

On my Main Identity (on my daughter's, secondary identity, everything is copasetic), when I double-click to open a mail in a new window or to compose a mail, the minimized window is fine, but the *maximized* window is offset down and to the right. This cannot be dragged or "pulled" on a corner or otherwise.

The only thing I can do with it is *restore* it (to the "minimized" state) or *close* it via the taskbar. There is no Move or Size option as there is with the minimized window.

Any help on how to restore this window to its correct position would be greatly appreciated.

Kind of hard to describe but when on my other PC, I cannot type in the subject of a mail message on AOL or login to any mail program(ie. yahoo, hotmail) due to I can't type anything at all where the login name/password fields are located. I can type in the address bar, nothing below that though. For AOL mail, I can type in the sender and subject, just not in the body of the message.
