Computer slow, lagging keystrokes, freezing when shut down

Q: Computer slow, lagging keystrokes, freezing when shut down

Hello,
I'm not sure what's wrong but my computer is suddenly alot slower than usual. It freezes often when shutting down and sometimes takes a while to bring up pages. The keyboard lags also. I keep getting a pop up from Norton saying something about excessive CPU too. Please help!!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,I recently installed software that apparently contains malware. My computer's symptoms include a little slow on startup, after use of more than 30 minutes the computer becomes extremely slow at doing anything (looking at My Computer in Windows Explorer takes 5 minutes), it freezes (especially Firefox and Windows Explorer) and, in one incident, the computer failed to wake up from sleep mode (lights reactivated but screen was "off" [not black, "off"], no response, repeated attempts to wake it up failed). I have since uninstalled the software to see if it would make a difference, and it has gotten better, but I'd like to make sure that there is no residual malware left over - or if I have spoken too soon.Attached is the Attach.txt and Ark.txt that is required by the preparational page. Hello hello. Windows 7 Home Premium, 3GB RAM, Intel Core i7 on a Dell Studio 1457 laptop.Refer to the topic HERE for boopme's history on my malware checks from a few days ago and reinstallation of Avira 2012 as it stopped working with similar symptoms as described below. The problems that exist now are,Video files begin to lag at random during playback. One moment it's playing fine for a good while and suddenly, lagging. Same issue in Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic and VLC Media Player. Also, VLC takes an unbearably long time to execute.Photoshop takes too long to execute, then lags when I'm working on large files.Firefox slows down and freezes at random as well.I run Ccleaner regularly and defrag once a month. How do I get my programs running normally again?

I can't positively state the association of this problem is with IE6 SP1, but I only noticed it after installing the service pack upgrade recently. Seems that various user input screens (possibly Java ones) including this draft on IE (not on OE6 or MS Word docs) delay the appearance of keystrokes for several seconds as one's typing, although the cursor moves along properly. Sometimes I can type a whole line of text before it eventually shows up. Not a major problem but annoying.

Has anyone else noticed this or have a clue what's causing it?

Hello!
I have been having alot of problems with my computer the past few days. You cant really even get online because it goes so slow and freezes up. I have ran spyware scans and virus scan numerious times and nothing seems to change. I also performed a disc clean up and defragment. I dont know what else to do.
Please if you know anything else I can do, I would really appreciate it.
Everyone at my house uses myspace alot so I think that is where my problems are coming from because we dont do much more on it.

Thanks,

Hello - I've been having a major problem lately with a slooooooow computer and missing keystrokes - I know I had a virus bc a warning popped up a few days ago from Norton, which I deleted, but unfortunately I don't remember exactly which one itwas. Anyway, I'm running WinXP on an HP Compaq nx9600 laptop (which has bad battery shut-down issues, but that is another story), and I use IE6.0 ad OutlookExchange6. So I read the tutorial Preparation Guide and followed all the steps: Cleaned out temp files, Scanned with AdAware and Spybot (but I'm not sure if Spybot was successful - laptop might have shut down - in my sleep-deprived state I can't remember, but afer posting here I wil try again), scanned with Avast and Norton, ran Stinger, installed Sygate firewall, updated Windows, got and ran HijackThis. FYI It seemed like each ofthose programs found and then cleaned out something along the way.I wil copy in the log from HJT below - sorry for the typos but those missing keystrokes are killing me, epecially when I have to do lots of ata entry in excel - aargh! Thanks in advance to anyone who thinks they can help me.Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2Scan saved at 3:33:25 PM, on 04/03/08Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600)MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180)Boot mode: NormalRunning processes:C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exeC:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exeC:\WINDOWS\syste... A:Missing Keystrokes And Slow Computer

Hi and welcome,

Sorry for delay. We are swamped.

If you still need assistance please post a fresh hijackthis log here.

As for missing keystrokes -- might be the keyboard on its way out.
Have a spare keyboard kicking around you can plug into the USB or PS2 port to see if it works better?

I see also you have both Norton & Avast running.
Not good to have 2 antivirus installed since they will conflict and slow down the system.
Suggest uninstalling either Norton or Avast.

If you didn't realize Morpheous was installing the toolbar & don't want it -- I suggest uninstalling the toolbar.
It can slow down IE.

Previous thread - Please read the responses so you know what I've done so far!

I have followed the Preparation Guide, but still decided to open a thread.

My browser, Google Chrome, has the need to..
- Freeze for no apparent reason, taking it about 5-10 seconds before closing a tab
- Loading (sometimes) the sites I enter very slowly.
- Radio stations getting interruptions at times
- Sounds continuing (Youtube, Twitch) for a short duration after going back to previous location on the website.

My laptop was bought about 3 years ago. It's getting old, but it still performs well for it's age. I have never suffered these problems until recently. I do not know what is wrong.

Ok now I know you're probably already thinking oh great another thread about some noob who's computer keeps freezing.

Firstly here's my hardware specifications.

Processor: Celeron 2.00ghz CPU.
RAM: 1 Gig.
Virtual Paging File: 1918mb of hard drive space is currently allocated for the paging file. (This is what windows recommends).
Operating System: Windows XP Service Pack 2.
Graphics Card: (Gamebuster) ATI Radeon 9200se (128mb).

Well here goes my problem.

Recently I reinstalled Windows XP Service Pack 2 onto my computer and a few patches and the usual things. My computer was running fine then the other day I decided to install Winamp the latest version 10th Anniversary Edition. Well it would seem after installing it my computer now suffers from a severe lagging and stuttering and freezing problem. I did a complete uninstall of Winamp and left out some components based on some information from the Winamp forums to no avail.

Whenever I play music in Winamp it suffers from severe lagging and so too does my system now. I have tried.

* Defragging my system.
* Scanning my hard drive for errors.
* Scanning for viruses using Avast! (Latest Updates).
* Webroot Spysweeper (Latest Updates).
* Running Hijackthis, I have posted a copy of this log to this post.
* Deleting files in the prefetch folder.
* Deleting my temporary internet files.
* Deleting temporary files on my had-drive.

Hello, my friend gave me their laptop to fix and I thought it was no big deal since the only problem they said they had was lag.I have downloaded CCleaner, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware onto it and done scans to clean it up. There was no harmful malware or viruses on it and I did a System File checker and everything seems to be in order. I've also uninstalled a lot of 3rd party software from the manufacturer and other unnecessary programs and that sped it up a little bit, but it still lags or freezes at startup and doesn't respond when trying to open up new programs sometimes. I'm not sure what's wrong with it now. It's a 2 year old Windows 7 Acer Aspire 5532 laptop with plenty of room to spare on it (101gb free of 136gb).Thank you in advance.

A:Computer Is Lagging And Freezing

Hello heineckenguy and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. I don't see any signs of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean. The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. HijackThis does not have the capability to analyze performance, hardware or application issues. For these types of issues I would suggest posting to the Windows XP Home and Professional forumThe techs in that forum specialize in matters pertaining to the operating system, performance and applications. When posting to any other forum, do not post a HijackThis log or the post will simply be moved back to this forum for infection analysis. That is what HijackThis is used for and that is what we specialize in here in this forum. Also, when posting in any other forum for assistance, give as much detail as possible regarding any issues that are occurring. The more information they have, the better the techs can analyze the issue and make any recommendations for resolving it.Cheers.OT

ok so im gonna be as detailed as i can about my problem, yesterday i decided to clean up my pc a bit to gain more memory and to make it run a bit faster. so i started uninstalling unused programs and did disk clean up clearing out whatever i didnt use. then i started ending processes cause i had way to many that i didnt recognize and i ended the cleanup with a disk defrag that took all day. now im not sure exactly where i went wrong trying to retrace my steps in my mind but i did end the process of taskeng.exe cause i saw there was two of them. well of course my windows totally disappeared leaving just my background wallpaper, though everything usually pops back up, it didnt this time so i was forced to do a hard reset while i was still defragging. which might of been a bad idea cause now everything is messed up. im not sure exactly where i messed up, i may have ended one of the default processes my computer needs to run properly, or maybe restarting when i was still defragging, or it could have been ending the taskeng.exe process that did it.

now everything is lagging and freezing, including windows. i would open a folder navigating through and it would take a long time to load all the way even freezing to the point of making it "not responding". it also freezes my mpc player while watching something for about 10 seconds then starting again and freezing everyone once in a while also to the point of "not responding" until it goes b... Hello sho9un1 and welcome to the forums

The reason for your problems is probably due to the ZeroAccess rootkit infection on your computer. I am currently still training for my malware removal degree and won't be able to help you remove the infection manually but instead, I recommend that you do a clean install:

Can you tell us the make and model and approximate age of the computer? Is this something recent or has it been doing this for a while? You might try turning it off, unplugging, remove battery, hold power button for 30 seconds then reinsert battery, and restart.

This started yesterday or today, can't recall, every couple of seconds, my computer freezes, and I can't do anything for like 1 -10 minutes. i'ts unbearable and it's driving me crazy!

At first the time between freezes was like 2 - 10 minutes, but it slowly got worse, now it happens every 5 seconds, and I tried everything.. I restarted the computer, turned it off and let it cool for a while then turned it on again, I deleted some things and freed some space, I ran troubleshoot, but nothing helped.. it still freezes..

I'm sure that it's not becuase that my RAM have too little free space(9.96 GB free space out of 111 GB), becuase it always been like that, and it didn't make any problems for me.

Although, when I turned the computer off for like 20 minutes to let it cool, it got better when i turned it on again, but after a while the freezes came back, so it could be a heat problem.

Note: a while before I got an alarm that said that my windows isn't genuine, it deleted my windwos anti-virus, turned my screensaver black, and on the right-bottom there's a message that says that my windows insn't genuine. Everytime i turn on the computer it asks me to get the genuine version, but i click remind me later, and occasionally it warns me that I don't have an anti-virus and I should get the genuine version. but I ignore all of those alarms, becuase untill now, it didn't say anything about my windows version. But I don't think that it have anything to do with the freeze problem... Read more

Is this a Laptop or a Desktop? A computer that freezes is either overheating or has a failing Power Supply Unit (desktop) If a desktop, shutdown the computer and open the side, clean out all dust and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Look at the label for the PSU. Report the Make, Model # and Wattage. Restart the computer and make sure all fans are spinning.
As for non-genuine Windows you will need to purchase a Windows key and activate it again. If your computer came pre-installed, I would talk to whomever installed it for you. If you, yourself installed Windows, then you will need to get a disc that has not been activated. We cannot help you with circumventing Windows Activation.

I have a number of Latitude E6520 computers that are all exhibiting the same performance problems.
While using the computer normally, users complain of very slow performance and applications reporting that they are not responding. On visiting a computer which has the problem, the following very specific symptoms are found:

The computer works normally for a short time, then suddenly stops responding to user input.
During this lagging behavior, the computer does not respond to user input, but some screen updates do continue. More specifically...

Mouse cursor can be moved around the screen
Hourglass cursor may or may not appear
Clicking the mouse on an on-screen button has no effect, not even visually (The animation of the button being depressed does not occur.)
Typing or pressing keys pressed on the keyboard have no effect
Hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del does bring up the lock menu, however it does so much more slowly than normal
If the freeze lasts long enough, an "Application is not responding" message may appear for the active application
After a few seconds, the computer resumes working normally again. At that time, typed characters may suddenly appear in a document, or mouse clicks made during the lag might suddenly take effect.
Once the problem begins happening, it grows worse. The delays tend to grow longer, and the time between them grows shorter, until it becomes impossible to get any productive work done.
Rebooting the computer always resolves the problem, but o... Read more

Hi NCHOSTMASTER,
Only because sometimes problems of this nature arise from the simplest little things I ask:

What does your Windows Update scheme look like
Have you downloaded ALL available updates
are you scheduled to receive recommended updates the same way you receive critical updates
Have you made the jump to Microsoft Update (the option on the windows update page below the progress bar)

Once you install Microsoft Update it behaves the same way as Windows Update except that it's more thorough and covers some important hardware issues.  Frequently this  step will iron out some of the most obscure and difficult problems.
If this information was helpful please remember to hit the YES button and if you need further assistance don't hesitate to contact

My problem is that my computer keep lagging every few seconds, the video (entire display, including mouse) freezes and audio buzzes.

I can go for a while without anything going wrong on my computer, but once it starts to lag, it happens for about 10 seconds on and off.

This happens almost randomly, the freeze is about a half a second and happens one after the other.

I have looked at many different articles describing problems similar, but all of them are talking about, just a video lag, or just an audio, etc. None of those solution have helped me.

At first I thought it might be my ram, maybe it was faulty, but i have switched the two 4gb sticks around and tested both so I know its not the ram.

So that leaves, Processor, Mobo, and Graphics card.

I built this computer completely by myself and it was my first build. I had a lot of issues building it and I could have messed something up. I have warrantys on all three components so I can bring any of them in, I just dont want to waste my time, or theirs by replacing something that doesnt have a problem.

Could anyone shed some light at all on what might be the problem?

A:Computer keeps lagging/freezing every few seconds.

Well, the bad news is that it could be anything from the problems you mentioned to the PSU or OS files. Try the simple test first. Open an elevated command prompt (click start, type cmd in the search bar, right click on the entry that appears and select run as administrator. ) Provide admin permission and copy/paste sfc /scannow in the window and press enter. It will take just a few minutes. It will check system files and attempt to correct any that are wrong. Next test the ram with memtest86 for 7 passes (best to check overnight), the CPU is possible but not likely. You can test it with Prime95 watch that test very closely with a good temp monitorting program like core temp. You can use Furmark to test your GPU, watch the temps on that also. Also, please completely fill out your system specs. The computer listed in your system specs looks to be a laptop. I don't think that is the computer in question. It would help us to know the hardware you have. What size, brand of PSU do you have?

Hi all, Past couple days my laptop has been freezing for a good few mins's while running Google Chrome and Bodog. I pulled up my task manager and the commit charge was like 3500/4090 which is really high. I have 70 processes going now, I think that's high but I'm not really sure the right way to go about fixing this and removing what. I cleaned up my temp files, cookies, and history and it hasn't helped. I run Avira, MBAM, SAS regularly and keep my computer clean. I dunno what the problem is. Any help would be appreciated. Windows XP/Service Pack 3 1.8GHz 2GB of RAM Thanks

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Hello Team,

My computer has recently started behaving strangely.

Sometimes it is fine, but sometimes loading webpages is incredibly slow, entering keystrokes delays so badly as to be almost impossible, and clicking on links in emails from ebay or facebook results in error messages that windows can't find them and to check they have been typed correctly, - when they are auto generated.

The fault is intermittent and re-booting can clear things up sometimes.

The sysinfo is below and I ran the Hijackthis program and the log is below that.
I downloaded dds but when I run it a dos prompt screen with a message appears very briefly and then disappears without trace.

I downloaded gmer it does the quick scan ok I uncheck iat/eat and make sure only drive C is checked. The scan runs for a while and a log is being created but it stops working at "volume/shadowcopy5" and I don't get a file to attach.

Sorry I can't do any more.

Many thanks for any help,

Rumi

I have a windows xp professional operating system. I was trying to visit a website for my brother but he gave me the wrong website. After that my computer has been running slow and freezing to the point that I have to manually shut it down and restart it in safemode.

I ran my McAfee virus program and no virus  was found. I ran malewarebytes and some malware was remove but the problem was not resolved. I also did the last known good configuration on my computer and still doing the same thing.

I got an error message that I never seen before this issue. It has only appeared a couple of times: ScService.exe has caused an error and needs to close. I don't know what it is. I don't know what is going on with my pc. All I know is that it was running fine until I went to a website.

Hello im having problems making my computer run at normal speed. It has been running slow for awhile now but recently VERY SLOW. It takes forever to boot up and any program I open also takes an eternity. Once the program is running it works fine.
I have scanned the computer w/ norton, malwarebytes anti-malware and spybot.
I removed all the harmful files. Spybot seemed to make it run slower.
In the task manager the CPU usage is at 100%. There are about 80 processes when I boot up the system.(seems like a lot)
I uninstalled a bunch of programs I never use to free up some more space and I also tried restoring it to an earlier date.
I gave it the newest updates for windows.
I deleted all the programs I dont need from the start up.
Today I tried running Malwarebytes' anti-malware today and it TIMED OUT!! taskmanager said program was unresponsive.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I have to wipe my hard drive??? Please help!!! It is a Sony VAIO laptop.

A:My slow lagging computer

<<I removed all the harmful files.>>

That seems to always be a presumption...by those who get infected. Of course, it's not necessarily true but users seem to like to say/believe it.

I guess that I have to ask...was your system infected?

Any error messages during this troubled period?

I'm not sure what's been happening lately, but my laptop has been running kind of laggy and slow. My specs are as follows:

Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium M
1.60Ghz
1.12GB RAM
30GB HD (19.1GB Free)
Software: Avast! AV, Comodo Firewall

I initially thought that my computer would only slow after I started Trillian, but I tested this (by not starting Trillian), and it seems it will still slow a few minutes after a restart. Restarting my laptop seems to solve this problem temporarily.

I have run the following programs to test out any problems, but they all come back clean:

Chkdsk
Defrag
Avast virus scan
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Keeping it in safe mode (I'm posting in Safe Mode w/ Networking right now) seems to also keep the problem at bay.

Help?

Thanks!

Let's remove Panda completely first to see if it alleviates the problem. Make sure you install another antivirus program back though because as of now, you have no antivirus program running...

Download this file and save it on your desktop. Double click on it to run it and follow the directions...that should uninstall Panda completely.

Hello,

I am trying to help out my mother on her computer and considering you guys helped me out on mine, I figured I should come back.

Anyways, the problem with this computer is it has a lot of junk files, folders and things on it, yet I am not sure which files and folders are needed and which are not. Along with that problem, we have the bad lag. Sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to load Windows itself as well as programs.

My mother runs a eBay business and enjoys downloading games and music, so I know that is some cause of the slowing down of her computer.

Attatched is a Hijack This log.

Run tdss killer from http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684
let it cure anything it fnds ( except SPTD.SYS or anything detected as UnsignedFile.Multi.Generic, which should be ignored) & then reboot
post back with its log
By default, the utility outputs the log into system disk (it is usually the disk with installed operating system, C:\) root folder.
Logs have names like: UtilityName.Version_Date_Time_log.txt.
E.g. C:\TDSSKiller.2.4.7_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt

EDIT I have moved this topic to the appropriate forum. Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs ~~boopmeI am experiencing a lot of problems with my new laptop. I have been trying to post online in this forum for the last 2 hours so I'll make this quick. I have Windows 7, 64-bit ASUS laptop. It is only 1 week old. Best Buy is being very difficult to work with because they say my problem is most likely due to a virus, etc.As a result, I purchased everything I thought would afford me the protection I needed to clean-up the computer and keep it disinfected. I currently run the following: Kaspersky Internet Suite 2011, SAS, Malwarebyte's Malware and Windows Defender.By the way, I can not run GMER or catchme even though I'm signed in using my Administrator account. Attached is log of errors I received when I ran catchme. Does anyone know what it means? What can I do to identify what is wrong with my laptop? My previous laptop (3 years old) was faster than my new one. Thanks in advance for your help.KevinI am experiencing a lot of problems with my new laptop. Hello

My computer has been running very slow lately and lagging when i I am watching videos on youtube. I looked at the programs I'm running in task manager and saw that something called svchost.exe has been taking up the most memory (40000 or so) when everyhting else is around 20000. Anyways, I ran a DDS scan and a GMER scan. But while running the GMER scan, I got a BSOD saying that a file "pxpdakod.sys" was the problem. Here is my DDS scan:

Hi,

Below is the HJT Log, could someone please review this. Most of the downloaded programs (O16) on my log are not showing up on my add/remove list. The only program that I still use is Ofoto. If they are not showing up on my add/remove list, then how can I remove these from my computer?

Also, on my add/remove list there is a "BUM" ... I'm not sure what this is and have not seen it on there before. Could someone tell me what this is and if I should remove it?

My computer runs extreme slow and I end up rebooting two/three times an hour. Sometimes there is a lag every few minutes. Most of the time when I reboot my computer I lose my internet connection and need to unplug my cable modem and if that doesn't work, then I reboot again till I get my connection back.

If there is additional information needed, please let me know.

Thank you for your help.
Lisa

First of all I'm blaming it all on ram since this computer only has 256mb. But anyways it used to be a lot faster (by a lot faster I mean it didn't take 10 minutes to boot up and load everything). I would understand it if I installed a lot of things, but the thing is I barely installed anything and even at that, I didn't install any high memory consuming programs, all I have is basically a kodak program, avast and some hp software. So out of the 40gb I still have like 33 free.

I have scanned with every program I thought off and find no adware/virus/trojans etc. But I still feel there's something not right.

Can anyone tell me if this Hijack log has anything strange. On other news the comp doesn't have the dvd rom installed either. It's not installed in the hardware manager and it obviously doesn't show on the "My computer" tab. It was working when the comp. came out the package, so that's another reason i'm suspecting something gone wrong. Tried deleteling the upper and lower filters and still no dvd rom recognition. I'm going to run a Registry cleaning tool... any recommendations on this?.

So anyway:

Hi guys,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 (7548) which has i7-5500U, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7 M265 4GB.

Problem I'm having is that the laptop is laggy and sometimes freezes.

I've noticed the disk usage sits at 100% most of the time.

I've just upgraded it to windows 10 in the hope that windows 8 was causing the issue but it has stayed the same.

Any help with this (as it makes the laptop slower than my 5 year old laptop which I replaced) would be greatly receieved!

Thanks!
