Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

Q: Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

Hi guys, I just spilled a glass of water on m Lenovo T420 laptop. I immediately turned it off and kept it upside down for a while and haven't turned it on for 8 hours now. Is there something I should do to avoid damage? E.g. how long should I wait and should I do something to dry it more? Help appreciated! Thanks,Joel

Preferred Solution: Water spillage on Lenovo T420 keyboard

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Lenoovoo,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

I would rather that you remove the battery and take it to a service center for general cleaning informing them of the immediate concern about the water spill. Do not attempt to power it on as tools may be needed to safely dry it up internally avoiding other issues.
How to Locate a Repair Center or Service Provider

If you have such skill and tools then you can use the hardware manual here a reference guide.

Hope this help answer your query.

Hi, recently a little bit of water was spilled on my Lenovo G50-80 laptop. I disassembled and dried it in sunshine and under the fan for a complete day. When I reassembled it and turn it on, no response was coming from motherboard, only battery percentage indicator was displayed in orange color. Motherboard doesn't have burns or water marks, What could be happened to the mother board? Shall I replace it ? How much does it costs?

Lilychapman5 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about water spillage on your laptop and wanted to help. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try: You Just Spilled Water Or Coffee On Your Laptop - Here's What You Should Do But, in most cases, those do not do any good if the water reached the motherboard and shorted out any components. The only way to see if that happened is to take or send your laptop to an HP Service Center to have them disassemble it to determine the damage and what it will take to repair it. Here's some information on the Service Centers: HP Notebook PCs - Using a Certified HP Service Center to Repair a Notebook PC | HP® Customer SupportGood Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

May seem stupid but someone spilt liquid on a hp 15-b137ss and since then it wont turn on. I was given it to look at and looking at the motherboard its taken some damage. I cant see anything burnt out but I believe a new motherboard will resolve this issue. I cant see any water damage on anything else.

I've attached some images.

i spilled (what i thought was) a minor amount of water on my MSI GX701 notebook keyboard last night, shut it off instantly and plugged the powersupply out. now everytime i try and turn it on, it doesnt react at all when i press the power button once. upon pressing it twice, the orange battery light turns and stays on, but neither the screen nor other hardware show any signs of responding. i took it apart, let it dry, took out the memory cards/harddisk, cuddled with it, gave it inspiring speeches and retried powering it up but always with the same result.
i know its most likely junk and i should try to save the data, but the warranty ran out long ago and i dabbled around with it way too much anyway.

any advice (other than smug get-a-new-one-comments) would be appreciated

Laptop Model - HP 15-r052nr TS Notebook PC My HP Laptop had water spilled on the lid last week. It was 3-4 hours since anyone noticed, and by that time, the laptop would not start. I took the battery out and dried it, and also kept the laptop to dry for several days, but it will not start up again. The powerchord shows a red light upon connecting, so atleast the powersupply looks alright.  The local shops said the water would have fried the motherboard and hence HP would be the best to advice.  Please advice what my next options should be along with an approximate cost to repair.

Hi, well another stupid person spilling water on their laptop. After so many years of avoiding this, it seems like it probably would happen one day with my absent mindedness. I didn´t spill it on the keyboard or anything though. It was a bottle of water that leaked and went underneath the laptop. I didn´t have a battery in, just the power cable. Unfortunately in my panic I did try to restart it a few times whilst the electric was on and it was wet. I know you´re not supposed to do that, but I didn´t realise til after.. then when I put the laptop to my ear I heard this sizzling. The Dell inspiron 6400 seems to have this stupid design where the chips are half exposed underneath, whereas in all other laptops I have seen, they´re fully covered underneath except for the fan. Why the hell do they do this? So i´m not sure what exactly has been affected under there. My keyboard is completely dry so I thought it would´ve been ok but apparently not. Maybe if it were any other laptop it might´ve been ok. After I started blowing at the semi exposed chips, they stopped sizzling. So some damage has been done i presume? I then put it sideways by a fan for about 6 hours now. Is it necessary for me to disassemble the parts? Its still under 1 yr collect and return warranty from Dell but im in Iceland at the moment so that´s not going to be possible until i return home in 3 weeks and i dont really have the screwdrivers here. So should I just leave it to dry for another few hours before ... Read more

I would let it air dry for a couple of days, then might try turning it on and see what happens.

Last week I spilled lots of water on my computer and it will not turn on anymore. Basically what I am hoping for is for someone to read my exact steps I took right after I spilled the water, and give me recommendations as to what is broken and if I should go to service repair.

Right after I spilled the water on my keyboard of my hp laptop, I dried off the surface with a towel. Then I turned it upside down and more water dripped out. The whole time it was still on and I was trying to turn it off and kept on holding the power button but it would not turn off(slipped my mind to just take out battery). I kept on trying to turn it off in this manner until finally, about 1-1.5 minutes after the initial spill, the laptop turned off by itself. I then opened up all the covers to the parts to let the computer dry, using also a light blow dryer on cold to air it out a bit as well(later found I was not supposed to do this). I waited for 24 hours, made sure everything was dry and Tried powering it on, until to my dismay, it did not. It's been a week and I'm wondering

1) what do you think is exactly broken? I got the data extracted from a local computer shop, so that means my hard drive is OK. Does that mean just something involving the power blew up because of the water?

2) and do u recommend getting this fixed at a local service place or is it more worth it to just get a new laptop?

Thank you!

Dear Lenovo, I bought a Lenovo W550s laptop last August, and last week I spilled water on the keyboard. Now, about 8 buttons on the keyboard (at least), don't work. I am curious, will the warranty help me in any way with any thing?  Also, I am looking for a replacement (internal) keyboard, and am having trouble finding one. I am pretty sure that the keyboard that shipped with my laptop last fall was not backlit, as the keyboard never lit up (unless I didn't know how to turn it on). Anyways, the Parts No.: 0C44952, ID No.: 57P1ZW, FRU No.:04Y2387, Model No. KM BL-105US.  When I looked up the part on Lenovo's website, it returned nothing: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup.  So, my questions for you are:1.) Does the Lenovo warranty help me cover my malfunctioning keyboard?2.) Is the keyboard that I have, Parts No. 0C44952, a backlit keyboard?  3.) Where can I get a compatible keyboard replacement for this laptop? 4.) Will this keyboard replacement work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA3DY3CW6149&ignorebbr=1 Kind regards,Spencer

I don't know what to do to fix this problem but I guess to buy another panel?I appreciate any help and sorry for the long post also would appreciate if someone can point out what kind of models to buy since i would like to buy the parts from eBay or a site you suggest  my laptop is 15.6 inches but that is all I know for now

Hi everyone, I spilled water over my laptop about one week ago. At first, the keyboard was working perfectly, but the next day, some keys were connected (when pressing one, it would display 2 characteres). After some time, those keys that were connected, stopped working at all. It hasn't changed since then.  I am living in USA but my laptop was bought in Spain (it has spanish keyboard), and Lenovo US told me that they can't fix it here, I would have to send it to Spain, which is really expensive.  Is there any other way to fix it? I read online that water can't damage the keyboard, but it has been broken for 1 week, so I don't know if I have been unlucky. Also, the laptop works perfectly with an USB keyboard. Thanks.

A:Lenovo ideapad 700-15ISK keyboard not working after spilling water

Water can certainly damage the keyboard.  There are 2 layers of conductive film and water gets inside.  That seems crazy that they cannot get a Spanish keyboard in the U.S.  I would try to get a second opinion.

I am running an ageing ACER travelmate laptop with Win 7 Pro SP1 (up to date with updates).

Yesterday I accidentally spilled some tea on the keyboard. I quickly followed procedure: I powered down, took battery out, dried the keyboard - first with absorbent tissues and then with a hair dryer.

I logged in. No problem booting up - up to the login window. I could not login because the keboard is not responding. Keyboard (most keys, except on the extreme right) are non-responsive. I managed to login via the virtual keyboard. I have no problem with the mouse or any mouse operated functions.

Right now I am working via an external (USB) keyboard. When I go to 'Control panel' > 'keyboard' all the vital signs are normal, eg, driver, launch manager are shown as functioning normally.

What can I try next to get back the laptop keyboard functionality back?

A:Laptop keyboard stopped working -spillage [moved to Hardware>Laptops]

Not much as the "spillage" has pretty much ruined the keyboard. Depending on your repair ability, you could order a replacement for it and do it yourself or take it to a repair shop for replacement. But the bottom line is; it has to be replaced.

My laptop LCD has been out for awhile and I've been using with an external monitor, but I decided to fix the LCD so I ordered a new LCD screen for it. The lcd screen arrives, install it and picture still doesn't show up. I then thought maybe I just had a bad cable from motherboard to LCD so I replaced that.. still no luck.

I can see a faint image in the background, but it's very dark. Same with my original screen.

What's odd is before my original laptop would show a just scrambled picture of black and white-- which is why I originally thought it was LCD.

What would the next step be? To order a inverter? Do the symptoms above sound like it's a bad inverter?

Hi I am new to this community, so I would like to applogise if I mist a simillar subject (I did check some but non resolved my problem). I have a thinkpad t420, I bought a used one. It worked great, and I bought it from a friend, that I trust. I installed a ssd drive, was usnig Linux, and everything worked for one month. But then I bought a HDD caddy, and replaced the CD rom. After that my thinkpad worked for a day (although it didnt recognize the second HDD). The next day I tried searching BIOS for some settings, and after restarting my laptop it was stuck on Lenovo splash screen, rebooting in a loop. I tried:- removing and replacing the caddy with the CD rom,- replacing my SSD drive,- replacing RAM (both slots),- reseting BIOS,- running a diagnostic CD (but it will not boot, neither can I boot from an USB) My google search showed that it could bi a problem with one of the USB pins inside of one of the ports (short circuit or something like that), but I could not finde any damage. So I am thinkig that the motherboard could be damaged, but I can access BIOS, but that is the only thing I can do with it. I would be wery thenkful for any advice or help, before I go to an official Lenovo service for help. Thnak you! Z.

Hi Zjaz123456,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with not booting to OS on your ThinkPad T420.
Is both HDD &SSD detecting in BIOS?
Check with removing CMOS battery, make sure you have disconnected the system from AC adapter and battery is removed.
Remove both the drive & battery from the system, disconnect the power adapter. Press and hold the power button for 15 to 20 sec perform this step for 2 to 3 times and then connect only the drive which is having OS installed in it. Use only power adapter to switch ON the system.
Hope this helps. Do post us back for further assistance!

Hello, I've owned this Lenovo T420 for 8+ months. I have been receiving random BSODs monthly, starting a couple months back, before then, I dont remember having them ever. More recently it has become weekly. Some days there is more than one. Today I've had 6. A couple of them occurred randomly just browsing on Chrome. Twice after I was connected remotely to a clients VM software. Then a couple times just booting up.

Currently I am connected to another client via RDP, browsing, and haven't had any issues for past hour.

I've ran the dm logger tool instructions and am attaching zip to this thread.

The only virus scanner I use is malwarebytes free and don't have any active ones. I've disabled windows updates because I've had issues with them in the past on this laptop.

Thank you,

Hi Daimyo21,

Welcome to the 7forums

If you have only Malwarebytes as protection, please install Microsoft Security Essentials
The software from Malwarebytes is NO Anti-Virus program and is not meant to run single on a system as AV.

Please install all updates from Windows Update available and check Lenovo for BIOS updates.

Lenovo T420, Type 4177-CTO. Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit.  8 GB RAM,  500 GB HD, third party 128 GB SSD added. After inspecting many laptops I chose the ThinkPad T420. The only better laptop was Apple and I needed different software. An important consideration for any computer is support. Lenovo has excellent support at 1-800-426-7378. Tech support and repair happens right here in the United States.  Repairs are done in Tennessee. The Lenovo ThinkPad T420 is a solid laptop. It is not as light as some laptops but strength and durability need to be considered. Weight of machine with a large 6 cell battery and a slice battery = 6 lb. 7 oz. (3060 kg). The laptop weighs 5 lb. 5 oz. (2430 kg) with just the large 6 cell battery. The 6 cell battery weighs 1 lb. 1.5 oz. (500kg) and the 6 cell battery would then weigh 1/3 less. You can compute the difference. Keep in mind my battery life with the slice battery installed is about 17 hours. The slice battery also places the laptop on a slight angle with the rear elevated. It is about the same tilt as with the docking station. You cannot have the slice battery installed while the laptop in in the docking station. The 6 cell battery sticks out the back so it is not a perfect cosmetic fit. The 4 cell battery will look nicer, be lighter and probably last about 4 hours. The overall design is perfect in my opinion. I find no problems. The keys on my keyboard for the most part feel absolutely fine and their condition seems perfect, but a large collection of keys on the lower left side of the laptop seem "hollow". It's hard to describe but when I press the the left shift key for example, whilst having the laptop flat, it sounds like it's causing a rattle from the bottom of the board. By comparison, the right shift key acts and sounds like a key should. This affects only the letter keys as well as the left side function keys (so the tab key, capslock, shift and function key). It just sounds "off" its like im clicking through the board not into the key? It's a little hard to explain so I can only hope I've done enough to help you understand. This is a refurb laptop so perhaps it wasnt put back together properly? I'm not unfamiliar with hardware although I havent taken apart a thinkpad however I guess If I had to I wouldnt mind but only as a last resort really! Perhaps this is normal for thinkpad users, to be fair, there is no physical damage that I can see and as you can see, all the letters work as do the function keys. Maybe I'm being critical but It just seems a bit.. odd?

Hey everyone I purchased a T420 a few months back and two times (just before cleaning the screen with a dry fiber cloth) I've noticed what looks marks made by the keyboard (vertical lines, spaced approximately as the keys) and what looks like marks made by the touchpad (small dots, the touchpad is dotted) on the screen. The marks disappear when cleaning the screen with the fiber cloth which is good so far, but I fear it is the dreaded phenomenon of the keyboard scratching into the screen because the screen touches the keys when the lid is closed. Back in the days and with cheap laptops you see permanent damage to the screen from this. Have any of you guys experienced this with your T410, T420 ect? Should I place a fiber cloth between the keyboard and screen when I close the laptop? It seems silly that Lenovo got this one thing wrong with this laptop.. As soon as I see the marks again I will make sure to photograph them and show the pictues here. Best regardsWuhtzu

A:T420 - Keyboard and touchpad leaves marks on screen?

I have not had any such issues with my T420 (or T400). I would think if it is leaving marks on the screen that there is an issue with the way the machine was put together.

Dear Community, a friend of mine has a problem. He upgraded the Laptop to Windows 10 for about 6 months ago. His Webcam is not found. There is no Imaging Device in the Device Manager and there is also no "Unknown Device" in it. The Driver for integrated Camera from lenovo site did not help. I used the Forum search but the entries did not help either. Anyone knows a solution? Greetings from Germany

Hello!I just bought a Lenovo T420 without a WIFI -Card, Is there any way to remove this so i can use a 6235 Intel card instead of the 6205 which was in it originally?

A:Lenovo T420 remove BLACKLIST WIFI CARD??

Welcome to the Lenovo Community!
Actually, it's not a blacklist, but a whitelist.Anyway, I suggest flashing this modified BIOS version: https://www.sendspace.com/file/0whb9r
In addition to the removed whitelist, it has several other advantages over the original BIOS.

This is for an HP Envy laptop. So I spilled water on my keyboard and after 2 hours of drying the buttons were all crossed. I put the keyboard face down on a heater(it doesn't get hot) and though none of my buttons are crossed, some don't work. "ASDF, Y, [,], J"......... Everything else works fine and as of right now I am using a cheap 10$ USB keyboard.

What do I do from here?

So about a week ago, I dropped an entire bottle of water on my acer laptop, it fell all over the keyboard and I paniced. At the time it was working. but the touch pad was not. I left it upside down with an absorbent piece of cloth so it would absorb the liquid, over night.
In the morning, when I switched it on, the touch pad worked but not the keypad.
So i put it out in the winter sun to dry for about 10 minutes before i realised that it could possibly coz more damage. So I pulled it back in, and put it in the fan to dry.
Next time i switched it on the touchpad worked but the keys still weren't.
So I left it alone. The next day, it refused to switch on. even now, it opens to the acer screen but doesn boot. it freezes halfway.
Its been over a week and i haven touched it or switched it on.
I have about 6 days to fix it in...
Can anyone offer me any advice or shall I just send it in?

I know I was pretty stupid but im generaly very careful with my laptop, i dont let anything near it. so it was kind of unexpected.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:Water on Keyboard.

I see this a lot especially with cell phones.
Water damage to most electronic devices isn't too serious. Most of the time, the units function is completely recoverable...unless it gets turned on or exposed to power before it's had proper time to completely dry out. Even then most items can still make a full recovery. So be hopeful.

At work when we get water damaged computer or electronic equipment we normally open things up remove any excess moisture and allow time for the unit to dry, usually a week. If the client is in a hurry we might employ a hair dryer. It's important everything is bone dry before starting things up again.

Laptops can take a while to dry because they're so tightly packed and air doesn't circulate as well as in desktop units so we might put it under a fan for a day or two.
Opening a laptop is a scary process if you've never done it before so don't attempt it if you don't feel confident in your mechanical skills. There may also be some warranty issues that allow for authorized repair techs only, so check your warranty before any tampering.

Attempting to run the unit to soon can cause some issues such as short circuiting. Motherboards and other electronic components can be susceptible in these cases but hopefully you haven't done any permanent damage.

If as you say, it's been a week and you haven't checked it or restarted the unit during that period, do a visual check to see if it looks all dried ou... Read more
