Windows Updates offered today, 10.12.2016. Most W10 stuff and teleme.

Q: Windows Updates offered today, 10.12.2016. Most W10 stuff and teleme.

Hello, Peeps.

Windows 7 X64.

The following Recommended Updates were offered today. I had previous information on all except the last four, which I Googled today.
Most are, it seems, repetitions of the Windows 10 Update stuff that many of us avoided all those months ago. So the hassle would seem to be ongoing. However, the last one, KB3184143 is an uninstaller for several of those annoying very same W10 Updates. Odd. Giveth with one hand, taketh away with the other. A couple of the last four seem OK, and (KB3181988) I have been having problems with sfc/ scannow reporting 'corrupt files but unable to repair' for a while now. Maybe this will sort them out.
The information below is taken from several sources, and the credit belongs mostly to others. I'm just passing it on.

KB2545698 - (Internet Explorer 9)
KB2592687 - Remote Desktop Protocol
KB2923545 - Remote Desktop Protocol.
KB2952664 – Prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10 (sends a bunch of telemetry data to MS, reported to corrupt system files)
KB2970228 - Russian ruble symbol.
KB3021917 – Prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3068708 – Installs telemetry service, prepares system for upgrade to Windows 10
KB3080149 – Adds yet more telemetry
KB3172605 - (Optional Update KB3172605)
KB3179573 - Telemetry (KB3179573 - install or not?)
KB3181988 - Fixed bug in SFC scans caused by the convenience rollup (“Win 7 SP2”) KB 3125574
KB3184143 - Uninstalls several related and no longer needed updates on machines running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

Sorry about "teleme" in Title. Accidentally exceeded character allowance. Is "telemetry".

Preferred Solution: Windows Updates offered today, 10.12.2016. Most W10 stuff and teleme.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

GWX has ended.
MS even issued a patch to remove it from Win7-SP1 systems, KB3184143
If you want to subscribe to perpetual paranoia about getting Win10 on your Win7 box, that's up to you.

Also, the current version of KB2952664 has nothing to do with either GWX or telemetry:

There is no GWX or upgrade functionality contained in this update.

As for the rest, I'll leave that to other members more interested in this topic than I am.
For the record, though, Apple and Google also use telemetry.
Telemetry cuts both ways -- without aggregate data about how an OS performs in the real world, MS cannot be expected to code needed security and stability patches for Windows or its other major software (such as Office) that will perform properly.
I find it ironic that some of the folks who most loudly decry "telemetry" are the same folks who are first to complain about a "bad" patch on Patch Tuesday. (That's not directed at you personally or anyone else in particular.)

There is a definitive solution. If one destroys all of one's electronic and analog communication and computing devices, physically cuts all cables, fiber-optic lines and other connections to the outside world (not just the internet), and cuts up all of one's credit/debit cards, one can be reasonably safe.

<sorry, it's just that this discussion has grown a bit tiresome over the years. nothing personal.>

Thanks for posting your list.
And I hope you get your SFC errors and other problems sorted out.

Title says it all really. For the last few days I'm being offered updates for Defender which I don't have. I believe Defender started with W8. I let it go ahead the first time thinking it would 'realize' Defender wasn't installed on W7 but it appears to have installed the update anyway !

I get Defender updates on W10 but that's fine.

A:Getting Windows Defender updates offered on W7

It will not hurt if you accepted the update. It will not cause any problems and take very little valuable space. You do have Windows Defender, it may be turned off however. Go to search by the start button and type Defender.

Not a whole bunch of info to go on here.  The system appears to be in good shape. I'd first suggest uninstalling SuperAntiSpyware,  MalwareBytes and Norton. Then use the Norton Removal Tool to make sure all remnants of Norton are removed.  You can find a link to it here (it's free):  http://www.carrona.org/avuninst.htmlOnce that's done, select a free antivirus to test with and see if the system is working better for you.Should you decide to also reinstall MalwareBytes, please be sure to NOT participate in the trial of the Pro version - as that's the component that might be conflicting with your other security software. Beyond this I have these 4 suggestions:1.  Get ALL available Windows Updates.  It may take several trips to get them all2.  Get ALL available, Win8.1 compatible updates from the manufacturer's website.3.  Start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html4.  If all of the hardware tests pass, then run Driver Verifier according to these instructions:  http://www.carrona.org/verifier.htmlAnalysis:The following is for informational purposes only.[font=lucida console]**************************Wed Aug 12 22:54:00.006 2015 (UTC - 4:00)**************************

A:Windows Updates issued today- anyone have problems yet?

Hi Robin,

I was just writing for a new thread, but you beat me to it
So here is what I have for this round of updates

I updated a Win 7 x64 system with 16 updates for November updates.
No problems, but the download was painfully slow - over 30 minutes for 117 MB that normally takes a minute or two.
I assume it was bad timing for me and the MS servers were overloaded...everything else works fine for download time...
I downloaded/applied ALL updates at the same time.
I ran the Cleanup utility and it deleted ~200 MB of unneeded previous updates after these updates.
No problems so far...

No - I didn't get an update for IE 11

A:After today's windows updates, my hotkeys are not working

Run the restore point the update made. It does that so you can back off changes.
Press Winkey +Pause. Click System Protection. Press the System Restore Button.
Choose the restore point made by the update. If there is more than one restore point made just before the updates, choose the first restore point made by an update. That should back off all changes.

Hi, I have 3 questions:

Update KB2976978 - Read additional info on this update which said that this update performs diagnostics for Windows systems that participate in the Windows Customer Experience Improvement Program.....for customers seeking to install the latest Windows Operating system.

How do I know if my system is participating in this program? Is Windows 10 the system they are referring to? I'm not planning on buying the new system (if it's free, I may update) so should I just ignore the update or install as long as it doesn't cause any problems with my computer system.

Update KB890830 - Malicious Software Removal - I have Norton 360 which, I believe, removes all malicious software when scanned. Should I download anyway............as long as it doesn't cause any problems with Norton 360?

Update KB3048778 - this one is weird having to do with systems that use the Japanese or Korean IME, whatever that is! I don't know if I need this. It says it's fixing KB3033889 which was downloaded on my laptop on 3/11/15......don't know why. Also having the IE problem that it states it will fix, so I guess I should download.

Thanks so much,

Update KB890830 - Malicious Software Remove, doesn't matter if you have another AV, that's part of windows for long time now. No harm in installing it.
Update KB3048778, just hide it or install it, it will not change anything if you don't use those languages.

So I got this computer delivered today.
I tried going to the Store to upgrade to windows 8.1, but it told me that I needed to do all of the current updates first. So I checked for updates (on the "pretty" menu it just kept searching and didn't work, had to go through control panel... Haven't really had the best experience with 8 so far I tell ya!)
It's been stuck on installing update kb2938459 for literally hours now. I would like to get everything updated so that I can get to windows 8.1 and then update all my drivers and such. I've had this computer for all of 6 hours and I'm having such a horrible experience with this! I hope someone has some advice for me.

A:New computer (unboxed today!) windows updates, STUCK

This person seems to have the same problem as I do, and also looks to have come to a conclusion about it... But how do I do a clean install of 8 so that I can attempt these updates before adding a microsoft account? Or is the damage done already? There were no discs or anything sent with the new computer, and if possible I'd like to avoid making any huge changes like that, but if it's what I have to do then I will... again, advice?

Dear IT Pros,
I have 2 questions that need your help and professional advice.
1) Does Microsoft has a tool to check whether a patch (KB) was superseded by another KB? In my case, I'm trying to search whether this KB4022715 and KB4025339 (both of this KB was released in 2017) was superceded
by another KB. This is because a security consultant has advised us to install both of this KB to prevent vulnerabilities but since it was released back in 2017, I suspect there must be a newer KB that supercedes it
2) Can advice what KB I need to download regarding this 2 bulletin ID CVE-2017-5715 and CVE-2019-11135? Can't seem to find it after much googling

Thanks in advance for the help

I received notification that 8 important updates were available. My heart sank, but I started Windows Update installing them and went away. Is there anything I can do in the meantime or do I trash my computer?

Microsoft will kick off the Patch Tuesday rollout in a few hours, and Windows 10 systems are expected to get its own batch of fixes, including brand new cumulative updates for the original version released in July 2015 (10240), November Update (1511), and Anniversary Update (1607).

Just like usual, cumulative updates are particularly important for Windows 10 users because they bring computers completely up-to-date once they are installed, but it?s no secret either that plenty of them actually came with bugs and caused trouble on PCs.

Microsoft is yet to deliver a cumulative update that installs fine on all Windows 10 computers, but given the fact that new ones are expected today, we?ll keep an eye out on reports and will let you know should anything go wrong.

This month?s Patch Tuesday also brings an important change for Windows 7 and 8.1 systems, as Microsoft switches to a rollup servicing cycle that?s similar to the cumulative updates shipped to Windows 10 computers.

Challenging month for companies
Chris Goettl, product manager at Shavlik, expects this Patch Tuesday to be particularly challenging for many companies, as it could raise additional problems, some of which would involve application compatibility.

?While well intentioned, Microsoftıs change will likely impact many companies, and in some cases, push them to make difficult decisions. At first glance, it appears appl... Read more

Hello All,
I have a laptop that I've been trying to install updates on for the past seven days.  However, no matter what I seem to do, Windows Update shows the "Checking for updates" progress bar with the green marquee.  Here is what I've tried:

1.  Let it check for updates for two days continuously.
2.  Ensured that Windows 7 Service Pack 1 is activated.
3.  Made sure that the two services (BITS and Windows Update) are enabled and running.
4.  Reinstalled Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (twice now), and tried to run updates on a clean install.
5.  Made sure that the computer can connect to the internet.
6.  Tried AutoPatcher (on the previous install), which could download the updates, but would hang on installing them.

I'm running sfc /scannow to see if it finds anything, but this is currently a fresh install.  The only drivers installed are the ones that worked from install, and no new programs have been installed.

Are updates currently just broken for Windows in general, or specific versions of Windows (such as 7)?
Thanks in advance.

The problem seemed to have started when I downloaded and installed the new Windows 10 security updates. Nothing really triggers the BSOD, and it normally happens about 5 minutes from booting Windows to the Desktop. I just uninstalled the updates and so far so good. I wan to make sure that it was the updates and not something else (Driver, 3rd party program). I actually BSOD'd while trying to submit this ticket. Thank you for your help.

Hi, we are becoming more and more frustrated with the forced windows updates. These may help home users but professional products like servers are not for everyday users and sometimes require alot of configuration to get legacy applications to work.
Windows will at times force updates no matter what we choose in respect to disable them. It is NOT up to Microsoft to determine if or when the servers I am responsible for need to be patched. Any reading and research we have done here has only yielded the
ability to prolong the updates. Once installed over 50% of the servers give an endless spinning circle and require restore or rebuild, this has become unacceptable and has forced us to start testing our applications with different Linux flavors.

Is there a way to STOP the updates indefinitely?

Good morning everyone,

I am once again having to ask for help here because I've been unable to install the Patch Tuesday updates released July 12th. (I received the "Updates available" notification yesterday afternoon, July 13th). WU just keeps searching endlessly, and after 2 hours, I restarted the computer to stop the process. (It could not be stopped in Task Manager).

(All day yesterday, July 13th, my CPU kept hovering in the 50% - 60% usage range both off-line and on-line. The only way I could get it to return to normal was what I did in Item # 2 shown below).

Also, NO error codes are being seen either.

Things I have tried thus far:

1. Ran full scans, including for rootkits with my ESET Smart Security, MBAM Premier, and SAS programs. NO issues found.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow command. NO issues reported.

However, none of the 10 Important updates (in this month's updates) were installed when I checked the WU list of installed updates.

I'm not sure whether or not I have a virus, but here goes.

I have been using windows 7 for a few monthes but recently, I have been getting a popup that asked to allow malware removal. I kept not allowing it.

Before that, I was using Windows Defender just fine, but since I got the popups, I couldn't update windows defender. Nor could I download anything from windows main site. it keeps telling me that the site is down or something. I couldn't even install any new virus software removal. I decided to just reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows 7.

After that, I had a clean install and I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM! Now I can't use windows update, I can't even install windows defender from another site because it tells me I don't need to install it because windows vista already has it. except I don't have vista.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Can't install windows updates and other bad stuff

and welcome to the Forum

Windows Defender is included in Windows 7 so that is why you get the error message when installing it.

It sounds like you need help with cleaning out malware, please follow the instructions here, and post the logs in a new thread in the malware removal section.

After running through all the steps, please post the requested logs in the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum, not here.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Good evening everyone,

My issue is with today's 'Patch Tuesday' Windows Updates.

[System: Win7 Home Premium SP1 x64]. Computer is a standalone, not on any network, and used only by me.

Description of problem:

There were something like 14 - 16 important updates in today's batch. Most of them did NOT install. (Please see attached screenshots showing this + my current WU settings, at the bottom of this post).
NO error codes are being displayed. WU just keeps saying it is downloading updates. The 'download progress' remains at "0%" the entire time, however.

Resolutions attempted thus far:

1. Ran CCleaner, then tried to update again. No success.
2. Restarted computer 3 times, then attempted to update, without success.
3. UNCHECKED all updates except for 3, and tried updating just those 3.
Problem remains.
4. On the 3rd attempt, after waiting 15 minutes, I cancelled the download/installation.
5. Ran scans with ESET Smart Security (v9), MBAM Premier, and SAS. No issues were found.

My question: Is there an explanation for, & a resolution to, this problem?

The only potential explanation I could think of is the Windows Update servers are too busy???
(Don't recall having encountered this type of problem before).

Thank you for your for time and any help!

Once again, the never-ending saga of Windows Updates continuing to "Check for Updates" hour after hour after hour - with no results - is again plaguing me.

(I've already run the program in Brink's article [i.e. Option # 3] and cleared/reset the WU cache). Also have run sfc /scannow - no issues reported. I've also changed the WU setting in the Control Panel to "Never check for updates", and restarted the computer.

Does anyone here have any step-by-step instructions for me to try and resolve this problem and get those blasted updates installed?

Thank you for your time and any assistance.

A:Windows Updates (September 2016); Keeps checking for hours - Any help

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.
Windows Update Settings - Change
After restart verify that the windows update service is not running if it is Stop and switch to Manual apply and okay.
Make sure KB3020369 is installed if not manually install it this is the main article page with all versions,
These other links do prompt you to download as soon as you click on them just to give you a heads up
Win-7 32 bit
Win-7 64 bit

Then manually install KB3172605 main article page with all versions,
Win-7 32 bit

Win-7 64 bit

After switch your windows update and service settings back to what you had prior and manually check for updates and the rest should show up shortly.

I'm planning to reinstall windows 10 and I know that it will remove Windows updates etc. Will it also remove Microsoft Office 2016 updates? Thanks

A:Will Reinstalling Windows 10 affect Microsoft Office 2016 updates?

That depends on how you plan on reinstalling Windows 10.

Do it this way and you lose everything, including all your data files and Office 2016 completely, including updates. You will have to reinstall everything:
Windows 10 - Clean Install - Windows 10 Forums

Do it this way, and you only refresh Windows 10 itself and nothing else should be affected, including Office 2016:

Microsoft confirms no more Windows 10 feature updates in 2016; two coming in 2017

Microsoft published a TechNet blog post on Tuesday regarding what's new in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. In the article, the company confirmed that it has two feature updates planned for 2017, but no more for this year.

Based on feedback from organizations moving to Windows 10, this will be our last feature update for 2016, with two additional feature updates expected in 2017.

The news is right in line with current rumors. Tuesday's Anniversary Update would be the one feature update for this year, and Redstone 2 - the codename for the next major Windows 10 update - isn't slated to arrive until April 2017. Redstone 3 is rumored as well, but without any release timing, so with today's news, it's presumably late 2017.

It's also in line with what Microsoft has already said. Back in May, the firm said that it would be pushing two feature updates for Windows 10 every year.

The obvious question that you're probably asking is, if Microsoft said that it would release two updates per year, why would the company only release one this year? Well, when Microsoft says the word 'year', it could mean a calendar year, or it could mean a fiscal year, which would be over at the end of June. With that in mind, the firm has released two major updates for Windows 10 every year, and is on pace to do so, even with Redstone 2 coming in April.

After having installed the Windows 7 04/2016 updates today, I found that I couldn't start Firefox anymore - it just hangs and uses up 1 core. Then I tried IE - hangs and eats up another core. Same for Chrome and Opera. Then I began to suspect EMET and started
Word 2010, Adobe Reader, Thunderbird, WL Mail - all the same. Applications not opted into EMET continued to work.
I then tried to deactivate EMET's mitigations one by one and found that I had to disable "EAF" mitigation to use my apps again.

(I didn't yet try to find out which of the updates is the root of this by uninstalling 1 by 1, since WU took so long (hours) to find updates _at all_ that I haven't yet dared... Maybe later I'll try to install the updates manually on another machine and
see if I find sth.)
Is it just me who's seeing this?

System: 32bit Windows 7 Enterprise, EMET 5.5, all updates from WU (except MSRT) installed.

Hey guys today windows released 3 optional updates, should I proceed with installing them?

What is your exp, did you get these updates to?

A:Should I install these updates? (updates released today)

I've heard about them, but haven't had them offered to me yet.

I'd wait for more info. What I don't understand is that they are supposedly NOT related to security and are considered optional----so why are they so important that they can't wait till Patch Tuesday in May?
