make a wireless castle...yes a castle

Q: make a wireless castle...yes a castle

hello people,

i was called out to an old castle that has been converted into a small hotel, coming from africa im not used to seeing such majestic european architecture, it has a real sense of....sorry going off topic a bit...

anyway, the walls are 3 feet thick and its three stories high. currently they using a wireless connection (3mb) thats going into a blue linksys, then into an ethernet switch...im going to suggest a dsl 7mb as i find dsl far less flakey than wireless solutions...for the same price...if not cheaper.

everyroom has an ethernet port...but the wireless linksys router in the atic is pushing the weak signal to another netgear on the floor below. and the two are distributing to the two floors. but the owner isnt happy with its performance. then on the ground floor there is another netgear access point, but its plugged into ethernet, so no problem in that room...

im trying to determine whether i should have 3 or 4 wireless routers repeat the signal throughout...or just throw an AP in each room?

any input, considerations pifalls you can think of...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

What is User Account with UAC? It is like a castle.
Is the castle a security? It was in the medieval ages.
What is Standard User Account (SUA) with UAC? It is a castle in the medieval ages.
What is Administrator Account (AA) with UAC? What a stupid question. It is a castle in the 21st century!

Why AA with UAC is not a security?
1. Microsoft says, that UAC is not a security, but only a security component.
2. Microsoft says the truth, AA with UAC can be easily bypassed in many ways.

Microsoft officially says that UAC is not a security. I understand this official statement, as a statement about default UAC usage, which is mostly AA with UAC.

Run command prompt on AA as standard user and copy/execute the below commands:
reg add HKCU\Environment /v windir /d "cmd /K reg delete hkcu\Environment /v windir /f && REM"
schtasks /Run /TN \Microsoft\Windows\DiskCleanup\SilentCleanup /I

You can see the second command prompt window, running as administrator without UAC prompt!
You can repeat this on SUA, and you will see that the second command prompt will be run as standard user!

Can you make UAC more secure on AA? Yes.
1. You can choose 'Always notify' UAC setting.
2. You can use hidden UAC setting to elevate only executables that are signed and validated:

But, even those secure settings will not preve... Read more

I have installed this game before and it worked, but I just recently formatted and reinstalled OS and now when I try to run it the screen flickers a few times then it says it couldn't load OpenGL subsystem. I imagine this is an easy question, but I forget how to fix it. I remember seeing this before some other time in the past. I tried running the single player safe mode executable but still comes up with the same thing. Someone help please.

Just a wild guess but you may need to reinstall your video drivers and direct x 8.0a minimum.

A:Return to castle wolfenstein help!!!

It might just install it automatically. Look in your RTCW folder for anything with punkbuster. It could be just a couple files within the folder.

If there's nothing there, and you've played the game, and are sure it's not installed, then try reistalling the patch.

Ok this isn't exactly a major problem. But, I recently formatted my HD and reinstalled everything I have, almost, including one of my favorite games, RTCW. Now the prob is my scroll mouse suddenly doesn't seem to work in the game anymore. It isn't an extremely crucial option but it helps with changing weapons more quickly and more, I use it for the zoom function on my scope when I'm sniping. If anyone has had a simialar problem or they can help, I would be appreciating it.

I can install and play Return to Castle Wolfenstein on my Win 98 machine, using the original drivers that came with the graphics card: an Excalibur Geforce 2 MX400 (nVidia).
My brother has the same graphics card, but the driver files have been updated from the nVidia site. He is running Win XP, and although the game installs, it will not run.
I keep getting an error stating "Glide file missing" and "Could not run OpenGL subsystem" or words to that effect.
The original CDs do not run on the XP machine either - it says "Disc Corrupted".

I have visited a couple of game sites and they say that all I need to do is install the latest drivers from the manufacturer, but the opposite appears to be true - the old drivers work and the new ones do not.

All other games tried worked fine, although this may be to do with their use of Dirext X as opposed to OpenGL? (not really my area)

Any help?

Return To Castle Intel: 16 Years Of Motherboard History

Last month, we took you deep into the hidden recesses of Intel?s Hawthorn Farm facility, where the company?s enthusiast motherboards are designed and refined. On our way out of the building, we walked down a long hallway that ends with the metal detector gate one passes through when entering the building. This hallway is lined with dozens of mounted, framed motherboards?a veritable walk-through museum documenting Intel?s many years of motherboard innovation.
As tech enthusiasts, we tend to be amnesiacs. There?s just so much good stuff to focus on now, and even better stuff coming soon, that we forget where we?ve been and the massive effort that went into moving through those stages. Walking this hallway, we felt a bit like archeologists or perhaps sudden visitors to the Galapagos Islands, granted a rare glimpse at the sweep of natural evolution. Some fits of creativity grew into the technologies we have today. Others blossomed for a moment and died ingloriously.

I've just bought a Netgear Wireless Router WGR614v7, installed it fine and it runs the internet fine through the Ethernet cable.

My question which might sound silly is How do I now make my laptop run Wireless?

I have a HP laptop with build in Wireless Card.

I can run the internet through the Ethernet cable no problem at all. Just need to know how I configure my laptop wireless.

If I go into network connections in control panel It says I'm connected to my network.

But if I unplug the Ethernet cable I can't access the internet.

It's probably something simple but i just don't know what.

A:Installed Wireless router but how do I make my laptop wireless

It may be simple, but without some information about what you have and what you are trying we can only guess. How about starting by showing us the following while connected via wireless and ethernet both.

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hello, Basically I want to find a way to use my Alltell wireless USB modem card to provide Internet access to 2 computers. We have a cradelpoint router that accepts a USB wireless card but we do not want to use this router because we live in a very rural area and the router makes slow internet speeds even slower and with the router we loose the internet connection frequently and have to disconnect then reconnect at least once a night.

We want to set this up but do not know how, can you help?:
1. Plug the wireless usb card into one of the computers and have that computer then connect to a switch or hub so all the other computers can communicate with it. Then enable Internet Connection Sharing on the computer with the Altell card. This will basically turn the computer into a NAT server which will allow it to communicate with all the other computers with internal IP addresses and translate requests/responses to the Internet.

Do I have to buy a switch or hub? how do I add the IP address in - I am lost in trying to set this up!!

A:Using an AllTell wireless card to make a wireless network?

Here are details if the computer with the mobile wireless card is running a Windows OS: Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Unless the router is defective or you are not positioning it well I can't think of any reason why it would slow the not-very-fast wireless connection. What do you get with something like speedtest.net with the card in a computer and what do you get using the router with only that same computer connected to it?

A hub is half duplex so can slow a network with multiple computers the same way Wi-Fi does, so best to use a switch. If the router you have has enough ports to connect all your computers you can use it as a switch.

Basically, I'm trying to turn this Linksys WRT54G2 v1.5 into a repeater to extend the range of the wifi signal I use. DD-WRT is out of the question because it doesn't support this 'version' of the WRT54G2.

All I really want to do is just extend the wireless range. Its a protected WiFi signal (WPA2-PSK).

If any more information is needed just ask.

A:How to make a wireless repeater?

I'll try and help

You won't be able to use the WRT54G2 that you have. The firmware just doesn't support it. Too bad you didn't have one that was just a tad older.

I looked at Tomato and it doesn't either.

A gotcha: When you do a repeater, you lose 50% of your throughput. The radio has to send data twice for each frame. Root to repeater, then repeater to you all on the same frequency. Not everyone realizes that repeaters are a compromise. Range in exchange for throughput.

Anyway, You have to find hardware that will support the firmware. I looked and didn't see anything for that model.

I know Linksys made a repeater (They call it a Range Extender): The WRE54G.

Buffalo made one too I think.

My guess is find a cheap unit that's on the DD-WRT list and go with that.

Then there's the obvious: Move the router to a more central location. Or run a CAT5 closer and use another old router dumbed down to run as an AP.

Hi ,

My name's Melanie...I was wondering if anyone could help me with setting up a wireless network.

Hmm..this is what happened:

We have cable internet..with a modem that's maybe 3 or 4 years old. It's called Motorola SB4101 SURFboard Cable Modem. The computer is around the same age, it has Windows XP Home.

Then I decided I wanted to use my laptop in my bedroom, so we bought a wireless router. It is called Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router 802.11 g Model WRT54GS.

I put in the setup CD..and followed the directions...but only the "power" , "wlan" and "internet" lights are on. The CD said the "Ethernet 1" light was supposed to be on also.

There's an ethernet cord connecting the cable modem to the wireless router, an ethernet cord connecting the desktop computer to the wireless router, and a USB cord connecting the cable modem to the desktop computer. Of course all the power plugs are in and the cable cord is connected to the cable modem.

Do you know what could be the problem?

The weird thing is, when I turn on my laptop it recognizes the wireless network..it will say "connection strength: excellent" and stuff, and it says that it's sending and receiving. But if I try to open a website it gives the same message it gives if I'm not connected to the internet..you know "site not found" or something. None of the messenger or other internet programs work either. I even tried turn... Read more

I believe you need a network printer. These actually have an ethernet port and can be plugged into your router. Problem with a USB printer is that whatever it's plugged into has to be on to talk to it.

I also posted this in the Networking Forum, I am not sure which one is correct.

My brother's laptop computer (Dell D600) started acting up, blue screen and could not connect to the internet. I went in and ran a chkdsk and I tried to get on the internet and could not. I called my ISP and we were able to get a wired connection (plugged ethernet cable in back of computer) but could not get a wireless connection. The ISP is telling me that it may be a problem with the wireless router and that may be the case, but other computer are working wirelessly, but I think it may be a configuration problem and I want to try that before going to the store and getting another router, when I brought this up they saw the point I was making and told me that they will have to charge me to help me troubleshoot the configuration.

This has happened before and I don't remember the specific steps but I remember some of the steps like I cleared out the cache and there may have been other steps that I forgot. Then I brought up Explorer and when the error page came up there was a trouble shooting button, but for some reason an error page comes up but not the one with the trouble shooting button.

Can someone assist me? Thanks.

SO I have a great little dual boot thing set up over here. At first I couldn't get my lynksys usb adapter to work so I said "screw it" and used my laptop which ran 8 with no issues AND my wireless worked.
Well I gave my laptop away. She's gone to a loving home
But now I cant use the net at all on 8 on my desk top which kinda blows the purpose of having it!
My adapter is a linksys ae 1000. I Have the drivers but 8 wont take em giving me guff over "its not digitally signed" or some junk. One member here tried to help me as we went into the registry etc and checked the binary string and it was ok i guess.
I CANT run cable. If I do my guy will nag and nag like an old housewife.
I gotta go to work but I'll be back around 9pm. If you guys could help me out with some options to get this working it would be VERY much appreciated. I've dug around in the guts of this install till my eyed bled.

A:For the Love Of God Make My Wireless Work!

I have the same adapter and it worked for me. I have the CD though.
Here's a link to the Linksys AE1000 exe I uploaded to my sky drive if you want to give it a try.

Hi guys. I just wanted some advise if there is anyway off course to make my wireless connection stable. At the moment i have a 512MB wifi connection and i use a wireless usb drive to access. But the connection doesn't appear to be stable. It keeps becoming unavailable alot of the time. I also use a High speed USB 2.0 card but still no difference. Is there anything i can to make it stable?

we are 2 people using the connection and we are both having the same problem.

A:How to make my wireless connection stable?

You could start by telling us something about the network. Make/model of all the network equipment, what exact configuration you have, and what version/patch level of Windows you use.

I can't imagine a 512MB wireless connection, that would be something to see!

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am new to this and I am having trouble figuring out how to make my wireless connection to the internet show itself as an ethernet port. The reason why is i have an emulator that can connect to other emulators through a wired connection only (the list of devices it shows is only my ethernet port). I thought since it only needs internet i could somehow bridge the connections. I have spent hours on Google trying to figure this out and im tired.

Due to the fridge in the kitchen blocking the wireless network, I have set up additional connections around the flat. All together I have three separate wireless networks. One router that came with the internet package, another router for VPN services and thirdly, a Devolo Powerline Adapter (1200+ Wifi) for the living room area.

My girlfriend has complained that her laptop and mobile phone keep switching between all three networks depending on where she is in the flat. We've had to turn off automatic connection on our devices and we now choose a particular network each time we want to connect to.

However, this is obviously a bit of a hassle, so I was wondering if it's possible to somehow connect all three together, like as if they behaved as a single network? In other words, is it possible to set up a system where you only connect with one password but you can freely roam around the flat being connected with the power of all three?

Not sure if this is wishful thinking

A:Can I make 3 wireless networks behave as 1?

Yes it is possible. But no it's not possible with the equipment you have. What you are experiencing is the text book reason why running multiple individual access points or wireless routers on the same network just doesn't work well; especially when you have more than 2 on the network. The problem gets worse as you add more individual access points or wireless routers. Situations like yours is why I've been very vocal about the use of multiple autonomous access points or wireless routers are a bad idea.

What you need is a business grade wireless system that has all access points centrally managed. There are various manufacturers that sell systems that you should consider. These are Aruba Networks, Ubiquiti, Aerohive, Merkai, and Ruckus. The companies sell APs which have intelligence built in to them that can create a cluster when they see another AP on the same network. You only need to configure one SSID. The system manages power output between APs so they're not stomping over each other. The system also helps divert wireless clients to specific APs based on AP loading and signal strength. The system does auto channel selection on each AP based on the current RF situation in your home to find the channels with the least interference. The resulting benefit of all of this seamless roaming from one end of your house to another.

The above system is what most businesses use in their deployments and what I use in my home network.

HP MultiFunction 6980
Wireless & Ethernet capable, as well as USB
Reportedly has print server

According to this Microsoft page, an ad hoc connection is temporary, but it can be made permanent.

HOW does one do that?

During the ad hoc wireless connection process, I was given the opportunity to save the connection. I selected this option, but to no avail.

After re-booting, there are no wireless networks available, until I go through the wizard, AGAIN & AGAIN!

The VGN C290's default 802.11 protcol is 802.11a, although it is capable of b, g & some sort of N.

The HP 6980 will use ONLY 802.11b & 802.11g, with g preferred.

I have set the Intel Wi Fi chip's 802.11 to b, but every time I reboot, it reverts to 802.11a.
Device manager > network adapters > Intel Chip > properties > Advanced Settings

I couldn't find anything at Sony.

hi -
i have a g4 powerbook at home and want to make it so that i can access the internet from my couch (basically). someone gave me a d-link di 524 airplus g wireless router.

from the little drawing in the pamphlet, it seems as though i would need another computer that connects to the d-link and then that could make my laptop wireless. but i don't have another computer.

is there anyway to use this router-thing (or another one) so that i don't have to have a computer connected to the modem or router?

if you have any instructions, that would be great. like, really simple ones. i've never done this before.

thanks a lot,

I would blame this on the mouse, except I've tried 3 working Logitech wireless mice and none of them will make connection. I actually posted this in a different forum, and then realized I was not in the forum I wanted to be in so I am going to repost here.

I have a Dell XPS desktop with Vista Home Premium. I was on it earlier today and everything was fine.

When I came back to it this evening the screen was black and I couldn't get it to wake up. I finally pressed the power button and my desktop came up.

SUPERAntiSpyware was open on the desktop and running a scan. My wireless Logitech mouse had no power. I pressed reset and all that, even changed batteries. Then I got down two other Logitech mice I had, which both work. Same thing with them.

I pressed the power button and the computer shut down. I let it set for 10 minutes and restarted. Still nothing.

I noticed that I kept getting that sound that is made when the add or remove new hardware is active, and I noticed that the Add New Hardware icon appeared in the taskbar. Of course, nothing had been added.

If anyone help me out here I'd be real happy to hear from you. Good thing I got a new Toshiba laptop for Christmas, however, there's lots of stuff on my Dell that I want access to, and the computer appears to be working fine. I just can't get any of my mice to connect.

Do you have any other wireless devices, this is a common problem.
Have you tried a wired mouse?
