Stuck in safe mode with blank screen. need help

Q: Stuck in safe mode with blank screen. need help

So basically my Nvdia was acting up and a tutorial told me to uninstall the drivers in safe mode and reinstall. but my BIOS menu wouldnt show up so I followed another method using msconfig that manually launched it into safe mode. I didn't realize that it launched in safe mode everytime until you disable it. unfortunately I can't disable it as the computer sends no image to my screen and is blank. so if there is a method to basically force your pc to start in normal mode I could disable the settings and all would be good.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Stuck in safe mode with blank screen. need help

Hi, when stuck in safe mode press the ctrl + alt + del buttons together. From the options select "TaskManager" in task manager "new task" type msconfig, go to "Boot" now undo the safe boot option. Restart.

After a power outage 3 weeks ago I was having issues with the system going down at around 5 minutes and then less and less time after that. I was told it was a display issue and to uninstall and reinstall my display drivers. I uninstalled my drivers and it was still the same. I felt like it was temperature related. I found my graphics card (Radeon 5700) was dirty. I cleaned it and thought I was back in business. Everything was back to normal, all I needed to do was update my graphics drivers. Once that was done, my computer would no longer load past the Windows splash screen.

I used Puppy Linux on a flash drive and I have access to everything. I can use the internet and access all my files. This to me says that it is not a hardware issue.

The fact that when I try to go into safe mode it gets stuck for more than a day on classpnp.sys (when I finally give up). I understand that classpnp.sys has loaded but, there is something after that that the computer can't load. I have seen some people have atipcie.sys load after classpnp.sys and it makes sense to me that it would be a graphics driver that is causing the issue.

I need my Windows 7 up and running for school and work projects. Any ideas, thoughts, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi ,
Follow this tutorial to run SFC /Scannow at boot.
SFC /SCANNOW : Run in Command Prompt at Boot
If you want to run the command from a USB drive follow this tutorial.
Boot Windows 7 System Repair Disc from USB Using Grub4Dos
And apply it to the first link instead of the ERD (Emergency Repair CD).

Generally a good tutorial to read.

I tried using the driver CD to see if it will help with anything rebooting and I did some Express Test. It gave me this code:

Error Code:    650F:136C
Msg:    IDE device failed. Blank media or no media is present in optical drive. Test requires media with data (Resource CD, Installation CD).

Have no clue what it is. Ive done some reading on Mup.sys. It requires me to remove some 'USB card'. I dont really see any . Any advice would be appreciated or if you have anymore further queries let me know.

A:Stuck on Mup.sys (during safe mode) and stuck on Windows XP loading screen.

HI Jon,
Thats not  a error to worry about.
That error comes up when u run express test on the computer and the cd drive is empty.
Are we working on a notebook or a desktop.
And mup.sys is a system file .You can repiar mup.sys by following these steps.
1>Start the computer from the Windows Xp CD.2>At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair. 3>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: ren c:windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys mup.old4>At the C:\Windows prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:expand <cd-romdrive>:\i386\mup.sy_ c:\windows\system32\drivers\mup.sys5>After the file is successfully expanded, type exit, and then press ENTER to exit Recovery Console. 6>Restart the computer.

Hello,

My fathers Gateway laptop (Windows Vista 64 bit, Model number: MD7820u) has recently encountered a problem. When you press the power button the Gateway start screen pops up (the one with F2 for BIOS, F10 for Boot Menu in the corner) the screen then has a blinking underscore in the left corner, the screen goes black then returns to the Gateway start screen and continues to repeat the cycle. There are no beeps. I can load the computer into BIOS, but I haven't really messed with the settings there as I'm afraid of wrecking things further. I can load it to the Boot Menu and a dialog box with the options CDROM/DVD, Main Hard Drive, Boot to LAN and Enter Setup pops up, with the Phoenix Secure Core , BIOS ver etc popping up for a second before the dialog box pops up. I've tried to boot the Main Hard Drive to no avail - it just starts the cycle over again. I've pressed all the function keys in hopes to find the menu to boot it to safe mode (I know it usually F8, but figured his computer might be different) but the buttons just beep.

As to how it got this way? He left it on hibernate last night and when he tried to turn it on this morning this is what he encountered. We figure it might has something to do with Windows Automatic Updates.

Some history about the sad state of his compter: His laptop battery will not hold a charge, it works off A/C power. His CD/DVD ROM is dead/ near dead. We've bought him an external CD/DVD drive that hooks into his USB port.... Read more

I have here my Mother in Laws C670-14D and its developed an issue whereby when you power up the screen is blank. it does have backlight and you hear the windows startup sound that you get before you login as windows starts up.

I can see the screen if I start in safe mode, in fact I'm using the PC in safe mode as I type this.

I did hae a similar problem in the past with another Toshiba laptop and that was windows 8, the issue was connected with power save settings but I've tried all of those and no luck. Also tried the remove battery suggestions, nothing has worked.

I'm guessing windows has done an update that is causing this but I'm at a loss and google has turned up nothing.

Running Windows 10 Home edition 64 bit

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance

Very similar to the following problem but i do not have a raid, and it seems that this PC has a raid and i don't, plus it was never really determined what the actual solution was.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/596146-solved-windows-cant-boot-black.html
The basics: XP Professional Boot up screen, right before the windows loading screen, or direct after the F8 Menu if you hit "Start Windows Normally..." it will just lock up, no HDD activity, blank screen. now BSOD, nothing.

All 3 safe mods work fine.

Ran chkdsk /r in recovery.
Ran proper fixboot procedure.

Went into safe mode and checked the event viewer.

The only concerning message i got was: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
AmdK8
Fips
nod32drv

Formatting really isnt an issue since i can back up anything i need through safe mode. However its just the fact that the Windows gremlin has struck me again and i must defeat it once more.

I highly doubt this is a hardware issue as it is more of a driver/software issue.

Anymore information for me, or from me that you need, i would be extremely happy.
Thanks for your time.

Hiya all! I have big problems here. First of all, Im trying to troubleshoot a toshiba m45-s169 laptop with windows xp sp2 home in it. The problem was that the screen wouldnt come up until I logged in (you could see a dim image while booting up and an external screen works, so I guess is not the video card nor the inverter since I tried a new one)... so I changed the adapter settings to "auto" and after that I get a blank screen with the backlight on right after windows loading (I can hear the sound when the desktop is fully loaded though). So I try to boot under safe mode but it freezes halfway, still in text mode. I have tried all the options under F8 and none works except Last known good config and normal boot, but I cant see anything. Can anyone help me? Thanks
UPDATE: I took the hd apart and ran a chkdsk from another laptop. It found no errors.

Alright guys

I am having a few problems with windows 7 and I was wondering if there was anyway to fix it without doing a fresh install.  Before I start I must say that I have not changed any of the hardware so I don't know why I am getting this problem now.  My windows 7 home was working then I loaded up a game to play and it froze so I restarted the machine, now all I am getting is a black screen after the windows logo,,

I have even tried to go into safe mode and I get the same problem as above.  I can't even repair it because it doesn't find anything wrong with it..

I believe it must have something to do with the display settings within windows itself.. So I am wondering if I remove the display driver and reboot if that will solve it. If so how do I do it through the command prompt in repair mode??

Please someone help me

A:Windows 7 Blank Screen, Even In Safe Mode - How To Fix?

Hi I had this problem its Windows Explorer not running, to get it running so you can start sorting the problem open Task Manager Ctrl, shift, Esc, then file, New task type EXPLORER & run (enter) all is then as normal. I changed graphics drivers, No good! Microsoft give registry edits they didn't work!! So i ran a full update from a current version, my original install was win 7 & i had installed sp1 so you must run that version. It was run as an upgrade from the running OS so no data was lost.

Others reported that the registry fixes worked  but for me  after several days on & off on this machine I found it to be the best way.

I broke my laptop's screen and have been using my laptop with my TV via hdmi.
I needed to boot in safe mode so decided I'd go to msconfig and set it to boot in safe mode.
UNFORTUNATELY (I just discovered) my laptop doesn't send a signal to external monitors while in safe mode so now I'm completely blind and unable to use my laptop.
I was wondering if there was someone with a functional computer who could set it up as mine is, and tell me EXACT keystrokes to disable safe mode once enabled, including all dialogue boxes and timers. Then how to apply these settings and navigate back to the start menu and restart.

I've tried tapping the F8 function key as soon as I started reboot and powering up the laptop. Unfortunately the boot option menu did not show on the external display.

ANY help/advice would be immensely appreciated

I click my profile icon, which appears as normal, but when I do the icon disappears for a few seconds, then re-appears, never prompting me for my password. I've tried rebooting in safe mode, only to return to the same log in screen with the same issue. It's also worth mentioning that my CD drive is jammed shut, so without taking it to a shop, a windows restore with a disk is out of the question for me. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, as much such so far has ended up fruitless.

I turn the computer on, enter my password, and everything loads up.
But, I can't open anything once I'm there... Not the desktop icons, not the toolbar icons, not even the start menu! Ctl-Alt-Del doesn't work either!
I had some malware that I removed using malware bytes.  After I removed it, these problems started!  Before then the only problems were some lagging and random video ads playing on pages I was visiting.
I also found "MyPCBackUp" program, which I was told was a virus.  I deleted that too.
The only way I can get ANYTHING done is to open in "Safe Mode with Networking."  I can use most of my programs including anti-virus and chrome.
I've been told that a virus may have corrupted the operating system.

PLEASE HELP!
I'm not sure what to do!

A:blank screen on boot up but safe mode works

While booted into the safe mode try looking for any error or warning messages in the Event Viewer, which is in Administrative Tools in your Control Panel. You click either application or system on the left side in Event Viewer, then I do click view, filter, then click to uncheck the box for information, apply and ok, so then only warnings and errors will show on the right. Then just double on one of those to open to see the details of it. Maybe try to run the system file checker tool in safe mode too, click start, run, type in this; sfc /scannow , and include that space before the / too.

First I'd like to apologize in advance if my grammar and typing suck; currently on my iPad since I have no pc at the moment.

Computer info from what I can remember:
Dell XPS 210 running XP media edition sp2(Before said problem below)
3 gigs RAM
500 gig HD
1.8Ghtz intel 2
ATI Radeon x1300 pro

So today after I got home from class I decided to install MS Office 2010. Went for it but an error message popped up telling me I needed to be running sp3(I know it's been a while since I updated). So I do that and say "whatahell ill upload my video drivers too"(hadn't done this n a while too). The sp3 update goes smoothly as far as I can tell but the driver update shoots an error near the end. I'm seriously sorry but I can't remember exactly what it said since its been like 4 hours since this occurred. Anyways I press ok and the video driver update just let's me know I need to restart my pc as well as the sp3 update (no they weren't done at the same time. I did the sp3 first and waited for it to finish before staring the video drive update.).

Before doing this, a bad ache in my stomach came up in my stomach and reminded to make a recovery point in case **** hits the fan. Why do I say bad ache? Some 5 years ago, at separate occasions, a windows update ended in a bsod and a video driver update in the same shoes. They both caused massive data lost and a full reinstall action

So I make the recovery point and restart. Dell logo shows up then... Read more

A:Blank screen after startup - BSOD in safe mode

I've heard somewhere that ATI drivers need to be removed from hardware before installing new drivers. I don't do this. Could this be the problem? Is it fixable?

Hi,

My computer (Windows XP Home) has recently been afflicted with a number of annoying viruses. Most recently, well the only one I know the name of, was the Antivirus XP 2008 virus. I came to this forum for help on uninstalling, and I utilized the malware program. My computer was scanned, and I thought all of the virus was removed. After doing this I used McAfee to scan for viruses. McAfee found a LOT and after the scan was completed, there were 4 viruses that could not be removed or Quarantined. I shut the computer down ( I needed to go to work) but I was able to do things normally at that time, I thought my problems were solved.

However, when I returned this evening - I turned my computer on, the windows logo appeared, and then it took me to a login screen (which I don't usually need to do). I had no idea what my password would be so I just pressed enter and that seemed to bring success. Unfortunately, after the welcome noise sounded, the screen just went blank and never loaded - NOTHING. I pressed ctrl alt dlt NOTHING. I can't right click either. The hourglass came next to the arrow every once in awhile so i would get excited that something would happen... but again NOTHING.

I turned off and pressed F8 to get into safe mode. NOTHING. Basically the only thing i can do on my computer is turn it on and off by pressing the button, and move the mouse around the screen. That's it. Please Help :-)

Thanks so much

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

backstory:
the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

problems:
the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

when i tried to put in safe mode via F8, the screen went blue or light gray and stayed that w... Read more

Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible
If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition by first pressing the Power button to start the PC, and then pressing the F11 key to start the HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: Depending on the BIOS version, your computer may display multiple prompts during startup including F11 to start System Recovery. Pressing the F11 key on a computer with an HP factory image will start System Recovery even if the prompt is not displayed

I have a Toshiba Laptop, not 2 years old yet, with Vista Home Premium OS. Opened it one day to the blue Windows Vista Home Premium Screen and there it stayed. I was able to get into Safe Mode and do a system restore. All was okay, but it happened a second time and I did the same thing using a different restore date. All was okay. Today I opened to the blue Windows Vista Home Premium screen and I can't get into Safe Mode any more. It sounds like the system is not booting. I don't have any discs nor did I get any discs with the computer. What do I do now?

A:Can't get to Safe Mode; Stuck on Vista Home Premium screen

You need some sort of media to boot from.

One last gasp. Unplug from AC, (if laptop remove battery as well). Push and hold the power button for one minute to reset. If that doesnt work you are going to need something to boot from

Is there no sound, no video, no lights when you try to boot?

Ok guys, so i've cloned an image from my old laptop to my new Seagate 7200.12 500GB HDD and using Paragon Virtualization Manager P2P made it ready to boot off new hardware. I've put it in my new tower system, installed all the drivers and bundled software and it's been running fine since building it over the weekend, albeit it every time I reboot I've been getting 'Setup is preparing your computer for first boot' which I'm hoping/intending to fix with a repair install. Now since installing a 2nd 500GB HDD (another seagate but not the same (both HDDs are SATA btw)) and partitioning it to image my parent's laptop I'd shutdown the PC, removed the HDD and rebooted. This time on reboot, and every boot I still get the 'preparing for first use' and then when I get to the logon screen I get 'Please wait!' with busy cursor and the screen keeps refreshing. I can't boot into any of the 'Safe-modes' to do a repair install and I don't want to wipe the disk and start again but me and the wife have a lot of precious info on it.

can anyone suggest a fix, possibly some CMD-line options? I have tried chkdsk /f /r which came up clean, bootrec/fixboot and bootrec/fixmbr failed to solve the issue.

Cannot boot in safe mode or VGA mode or last known good config after installing an Nvidia 91.xx driver upgrade. Graphics card is an Nvidia Ti4200 AGP card. When trying to do normal windows boot it gets as far as the Windows splash screen , then goes blank forever. In a safe mode boot attempt the last line printed to screen is "WINDOWS/System32/DRIVERS/agp440.sys", then it hangs there forever.

Swapped to a known good Nvidia 6600 graphics card. Same symptoms. 6600 card again proves fine back in its own PC.

Am able to get to windows recovery console using Win XP CD. Disabling and re-enabling NVSvc and agp440 services does not help. chkdsk c: /r found some error and fixed them, but no improvement. The service VgaSave is enabled.

Nvidia tech support says there's nothing about their drivers that should interfere with Windows booting into Safe Mode with VGA graphics. But something has screwed that up.

My win XP Pro CD is SP1, but the pc is at SP2 with all latest updates as aof a few days ago. I do have an SP2 Cd from another pc.

If I could just get to the System Restore screen I could fall back to a good restore point, but no display!! Helllp!

Still no progress. Does anyone have any ideas at all? Need to get my PC back up. Is there a log accessible from DOS or REcovery console that would show what offending file is mising or stopping the boot? Can anyone aim me at a Microsoft article on things like this?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655D laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer was working like a dream and has been for about a year now, when yesterday I booted up after running Windows update, like always, logged on like normal, only to see a blank screen with only my mouse cursor. Neither Ctrl+Alt+Del nor Ctrl+Shft+Esc work to bring up the Task Manager. I am able to boot into Safe Mode just fine, but of course unable to uninstall the Windows updates to the .NET framework.

I have tried System Restore several times now, both from the Safe Mode and from the start-up recovery options accessed via F8 upon system startup. From the same menu, I have attempted Startup Repair but alas, Windows does not detect any problems (go figure, right? ).

I have ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics Tool to check if my hardware was going bad, and upon completion, it rebooted, once again, to a blank screen after being prompted to log in. Mouse works, nothing else does. Upon pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del I am greeted with the following message after waiting roughly 5 minutes:

"The logon process was unable to display security and logon options when CTRL+ALT+DELETE was pressed. If the operating system does not respond, press ESC or restart the computer by using the power switch."

^Pressing ESC makes the message disappear along with my mouse, so that I am staring at a completely blank screen.

Please do not run any unsupervised scans, fixes, etc.  We can work against each other and end up in a worse place.
Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so.  Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned.  Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

If you are using Windows 8 consult How to use the Windows 8 System Recovery Environment Command Prompt to enter System Recovery Command prompt.

If you are using Vista or Windows 7 enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

Sounds liek you have an overheating issue. When is the last time you cleaned out your fans? Regooed the processor?

If thats not the cause, then I would say its probably a virus or malware, or the power supply is on its way out.

Yesterday I ran Malware Bytes and McAfee because I started to get random pop-ups when I normally do not. Both programs showed no problems. I also cleaned the disk space, which had not been done in a while. This morning, all icons were missing from the screen--it was just a blank black screen, so I shut down by pressing the power button. When I turned the laptop back on and I try to boot in Normal and Safe mode, it will not do so. With Normal mode, it goes to a blank black screen and does not even go to the "Windows Loading" screen. For Safe mode, it begins to list a bunch of drivers, etc, but it seems to get stuck with only half the screen filled with the list and will not move past that point.

I wish I could install HijackThis and run it as it has worked for me in the past, but I cannot even get my laptop to load.

I do not have an XP installation disc, but do have the Recovery Console on my boot up menu. I have tried running ChkDsk, FixMBR, FixBoot but to no avail.

Help!

Hello, guys!
Yesterday I've bought a new PC and successfully installed Windows 8.1.
After a few installations of software (vlc, utorrent...) I've had a blue error screen, after that I can't even get into login screen, windows just won't load "an unexpected i/o error has occurred 0xc00000e9"
I've tried to boot from usb with my windows 8.1, but after Asrock logo (sometimes even without it ) it is just a blank screen.
I can't get into safe mode either ( don't know how. F8 won't work ). First time I've managed to do this while booting the same usb, but now it won't work.
I've tried to install windows 10 on usb and oh yes... it booted after almost 2-3 hours of waiting and everything was very slow. I could not install it due to mbr error. Windows sees my SSD and HDD, so they must be fine, right?
So I installed a new copy of windows 10 into my usb ( gpt, fat32 ).
And... now I can't get past black screen after booting. I see basic screen with windows 10 + memory test. I select windows 10 install or recovery tools, I see Asrock logo and... black screen.
Same with windows 7. "Windows is loading files" and then there is just a black screen.
My motherboard is Asrock z170 Pro4s.
Help me please, I don't know what to do.
I am very sorry for my english.
