Black screen after boot, Stuck Windows setup

Q: Black screen after boot, Stuck Windows setup

My laptop runs Windows 7 HP 64-bit.

HOW THE PROBLEM STARTED:
I was trying to repair install the OS from setup from my hard disk. When I returned after two hours, there was a black screen, and system was non-responsive. I waited for another half an hour, but decided to restart the laptop.

Since then there were two options in the boot menu:
1.Windows 7 2.Windows Setup Rollback

Either of them lead to the same black screen(even the backlight is off) after the windows logo. The black screen stays indefinitely long until I repeatedly press Esc/CtrlAltDel/CtrlShiftEsc, which causes reboot after some time

when I selected Windows 7 option and ran in Safe mode, a low res setup screen saying that
"Windows cannot complete the installation in safe mode. to continue installing windows, restart the computer"
appears and then the system restarts

Then tried repairing the OS from Command Prompt in the repair options. I tried bootrec, of which FixMbr and FixBoot ran successfully, but ScanOS and FixMbr showed 0 windows installations.

Since this step, the "Windows Setup Rollback" Option has disappeared from the Boot menu, but the back screen after booting and the "setup cannot continue..." screen still appears in safe mode.

Startup repair can't detect any problem
sfc /scannow says that there is a system repair pending, restart and try again
No memory hardware errors

Note:I cannot format the disk as a lot of important data is in the same partition as windows.

How am I supposed to repair the Windows without affecting the settings and my personal data?

At least tell me how to abort this stuck installation to get back to the (corrupt but most of the stuff still working) state before the installation started(urgent, need it for studies )

Thank You

Preferred Solution: Black screen after boot, Stuck Windows setup

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Alright, so I had Windows Vista installed and everything was fine. Well I wasnt completely enjoying Vista because I wasnt able to play all my games and run all my programs on it so I wanted to duel boot with Windows XP. Well I created the partition and rebooted with the windows XP disk in, I installed XP on the new partition I had created(d:), then I rebooted again, and once it loads BIOS and gets ready to load windows, it gets stuck at a black screen.

If I put the Windows XP CD back in and try to boot, it will come up with the "Press Any Key to Boot from CD" message, but if I dont press anything, it will just sit there forever.

I went in and tried to delete the partition and that didnt work, so I created and installed Windows on it again, and that also didnt work.

So basically I am stuck at a black screen and I have NO idea TWIBAT to do. Any and all help will be very much appreciated!

A:Will NOT Boot Windows. Stuck at Black Screen.

There are really only a few "repair" options in Recovery Console, and Recovery Console is your only option at this point.

From Recovery Console, get to the "C:\" prompt and type:

"fixboot"
"fixmbr" -and-
"chkdsk /r"

and then restart.

If XP will not launch one or the other installations, you are going to need to use the command "bootcfg" in Recovery Console. However, I have never used this on a dual-boot system and so cannot help you with it.

But my guess is that the boot.ini file can be tweaked into giving you at least one O/S option. But do the first part I mentioned first. Pay attention to the chkdsk and report if it found errors or not.

Hello I have trying to fix this issue and I was hoping someone could help me out. Yesterday morning I did a restart on my XP PC and after the restart it will not boot again. It get to the point before the spash screen and then nothing happens. Here is what I have done(in order):-Tried to boot into Safe Mode. It started loading files, and hung on /Windows/System32/Drivers/Fasttx2k.sys-After that I tried to do a Windows Repair Install from the XP SP3 disc. It went through copied all files, but on reboot it was same issue.-Went into recovery console and did a CHKDSK /R. That finished, I was told 1 or more files were fixed. Rebooted, same issue, still hanging on the Fasttx2k.sys file.-I have 4 sticks or RAM in PC. I took them all out and put them in 1 at a time. Same result all 4 times.-Put in a spare video card, Same result, still halting on Fasttx2k.sys -Went to recovery console and renamed Fasttx2k.sys to Fasttx2k.old just to see what happens. Now hangs on atapi.sys-Tried another repair install from XP CD, still no luck still hanging on atapi.sysI did not run fixmbr or fixboot because they both warned me that I may mess things up even more if I run them. I was hoping to salvage my system. At this point I am still not sure if its hardware or software issues. The drive seems quite responsive, its a 500GB Western Digital SATA drive. Before this all happened my PC was on for about 5 days. I did not install any software/harware in this time, but I did have O&O def... Read more

This is driving me crazy.

I have deleted the partition and reinstalled etc.

Now I have gone into the recovery consol and gives me to options to log into

D is the partition I Created for Windows XP.

Well I logged onto 2) and did fixboot/fixmbr/and chkdsk/r

First of all, sorry for another new thread. I didn't see a general one for installation issues or one that fits my problem.

So, I started trying to update 8 to 8.1 from Windows Store. It went ok there, rebooted, installed and it got somewhat stuck around 83% during "applying PC settings" (don't know if it's exactly that in english, since mine is in portuguese). A few minutes later, black screen and after a few more minutes, it rebooted and went to the boot screen (Windows logo). However, it never got past that. Eventually, after many reboots, it restored to 8.0. I tried two times in a row and always the same problem.

Is there any solution?

A:Windows 8.1 update - Black Screen and then stuck on boot

As a pre-check before your next attempt, make sure all Windows Updates are current and confirm there is no inherent corruption to your current 8.0 installation by following the steps in this tutorial:

Hey,
Let me just start out saying Thank you, For the help and I was recommend this site from a lot of people. I try to do as much on my own but it only gets you so far. I have read Pages and Pages on seeing if I can find a fix. I will try to explain the best I can and tell you as much as I can. If I have not said something right or not told you something please just let me know so I can fix it.
The problem started Yesterday when My HDD went bad I could see it was a bad hard drive it was already making noises and very slow so I knew it was going to happen. I had a few other HDD's laying around 1 IDE 60gbs Tried that one but It just would not install windows saying that it could not install windows because the system might not be able to boot from it. So I went and got another HDD I had laying around which was a 60gb Sata drive I plugged it back in the same spot. Then I loaded it up had the Windows 7 disk in already I got to the post-boot screen where it says Press DEL for Bios and Tab for SETUP? it kept freezing at that point so I finally restarted and Pressed TAB real quick which got me to a screen that says AMERICAN MAGATRENDS. That's when I noticed that it was saying the Drive was 3rd Master which seemed odd to me because It was not set for that before. I didn't think nothing of it and then there was two options to press DEL for setup and F8 for BBS POPUP I have tried both options and they both just stay stuck on that screen. When Win 7 pro (32 bits) boots up, as we all notice, there is a second or so when there is a black screen, w/ just your mouse cursor, and then you are supposed to see the blue Welcome screen.

In the past 2 months, my computer is stuck at that black screen about 7 times, as recent as tonight. I've done a clean install w/ the latest Nvidia driver 2 weeks ago. No change. It looks like win 7 Pro is stuck there and waiting for something as my hard drive light blink on and off.

So, I would do nothing, or sometimes I would disconnect the HDMI port connects to my 3rd PC Panel (see below), and I would wait for 5 min. or so. Then my login logo shows up, I click it, and I got to windows.

Now, w/ the normal boot up, I don't have that login logo, win 7 pro will simply boot up directly to win 7 main screen after I turn on the computer.

Some1 said this could be IRQ sensing problem of the video card. But so far, I have no proof on that 1 way or the other:

All these started about 2 months ago, at or near the same time when the Sharp LED TV technician came to my house and upgraded all the firmware, including the firmware that consumers can't download, to my Sharp LED LCD TV, as the power button wasn't working.

Then in the past 2 mth., every time I turned on my LCD TV, which is connected to my computer as the 3rd screen via a DVI to HDMI cable, Win 7 senses this 3rd panel, and the screen went black and back on again. This isn't the way it used to be: as it WAS NOT... Read more

A:Win 7 Pro, 32 bit stuck at Black Screen during boot up

Black screen issues are most often related to corrupted or outdated drivers. It's no longer just the video drivers that are a problem - it can be the storage drivers, the chipset drivers, or even more drivers.

The most likely fix is to update all drivers - but even then it may not fix things for you. I'd suggest trying a monitor driver for the Sharp TV - but have no idea if any are available.

Make sure that you have a System Restore point set (and a bootable System Repair disc) to use if the black screen can't be gotten around using other methods.

FYI - at work (a PC shop) we don't bother to fix black screen problems. We try System Restore. If it doesn't work, we backup the data, wipe the hard drive with DBAN, and then reinstall Windows. In the past we could spend 2 weeks working on a system and still not fix the black screen.

Dear Lenovo support, after less than one week of use, today I entered the BIOS to modify the "Thunderbolt BIOS Assist Mode", also to disable the "Trackpoint" as both of them are required to use Linux effectively in this laptop [so it seems]. After doing that, the laptop is now stuck on a blank screen, no bleeps or anything. I can shut it down, then the black screen comes, it is not possible to access any meny as the screen just remains black. Keys and leds do work, also pressing F1 after boot makes the laptop bleep. I have tried using the reset pin, the laptop shut down but no change. What's the next step to proceed. Best regards, E. p.s: This is a X1 Yoga 3rd gen i7 8650U + 16GiB. Given the price of this laptop, the large number of issues including in my case, bad sleep support (missing S3), pen stuck inside case requiring a support call, bad behavior of trackpad and fingerprint reader on suspend, etc... it is fairly disheartening. I wonder if MS convinced you to make such a mess in order to sell more Surfaces, I dunno, but the experience was not good and a lot of valuable work time has been lost in what it is a top professional laptop == that's a no go.

I have a weird problem during bootup. To begin with, here are my specs: HP ENVY h8 PC SeriesModel no: h81514eo To this computer I have an Acer Predator monitor connected via display port. Problem:When I boot the computer with the monitor connected it get stuck and the monitor gets no feed. On top of the computer chassi there is a small led display which normally shows two things during start up: one orange icon featuring three disks and one blue icon featuring what looks like a network sign. When the boot doesn't work it gets stuck on a pattern of a number (say 6) flashes of the orange disk icon followed by a fast break and then one more disk blink. It then repeats this forever (I've let it just go like that for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes etc and it never breaks the loop) and the monitor doesn't receive any output. What I have found, and I can't recall where I heard about this ludicrous idea, is that I can get the computer to start by unplugging the monitor display port cable. Then the computer (normally though, not always) moves on from the initial disk icon blinking and starts flashing the network sign again. I've added a startup sound to my windows installation so I know that when I hear that it's safe to connect the monitor.Needless to say this is not a happy marriage . Anyone have any idea why this would happen and how to solve it?

Everything was normal until I restarted my system and it takes longer time to boot. The screen stays black after boot logo disappearing, until I saw a BSOD.

Attached below is last and the only dump file generated while BSOD occured. I need to know what's the real cause so I can prevent it in the futures (this is like my third time to refresh install in less than a year...)

Note that I generated this diagnostic after refresh install so it might be irrelevant to crash dump attached...

Is there any reason that you have not updated to Win8.1?

No Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Windows likes 15% free space in order to perform stuff "behind the scenes" without adversely affecting the system's performance. Please free up 15% on ALL hard drives (you can get away with 10% on larger drives and won't notice a large performance penalty)

Be careful with your Sierra Wireless USB device. In the past I've seen problems with these - especially if you're using older drivers (yours date from 2011 and may not be Win8 compatible).
The test is to uninstall the drivers and remove the device from the system and see if it stops the BSOD's

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

My wife has a computer with an ASUS P5ND motherboard that's been failing to boot lately; I'm not sure what's causing it, but it may be a motherboard problem, so I'm posting here. Essentially, what happens is that the BIOS boots partially (including a successful sounding startup beep) and then the screen goes black. This had been occuring during the Windows boot process (I run Vista; the Windows logo would appear briefly, and then the screen would go blank and the booting process would hang), but now I'm getting a message saying that the BIOS post failed and then the screen goes black. I can then press delete to enter setup, but the screen blacks several seconds afterwards.

Admittedly, this may be a video card problem (feel free to move it if so), but my wife noticed no graphical artifacting or other signs of damage (other than a Skyrim crash to desktop, which is probably par for the course for the game). For what it's worth, she has a GeForce SLI setup of some kind (I'm not sure what, but if it would be helpful, I can check); I've tried reseating the cards and the bridge to no avail (though immediately after doing this, I *was* able to view the set-up screen successfully, without the screen going blank; further reboots led to the blanking set-up screen again).

Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions as to the nature of this problem before I take it in for repairs, I'd greatly appreciate them. I'm pretty mystified, and... Read more

Now I am assuming this is quite an old machine and maybe there are a few hardware problems such as the hard drive RAM etc etc

Now the other thing is what Windows media (7) are you trying to use - a retail or OEM version. Going back to XP is a retrograde step if you want my opinion because of the age of the system and the lack of any support.

A:Error on installing XP Home - stuck at Windows Setup screen

First thing.....
When the bsod(blue screen of death) comes up write down the error and respond back. This will help us in determining what is causing the problem. I really doubt that you have a hardware problem. Since the system passes the initial post test.

Depending on what little nasty viruses you caught. Some are not deleted just by reformatting the hard drive. You may need to do a low level format to make sure your boot sectors are clean as well as your fat table isnt infected.

There are some pro's and con's to doing a low level format.
Pro's.....put's the drive back to like new status. Like you just bought it.
Con's....It takes hours to do a low level format, but It's dependant on the size of the drive. You can download the low level format tool from your hard drive manufacturer.

Good Morning,

For the past several months I have been having problems with my HP desktop computer. When my system reboots I sometimes get a black screen with nothing on it or it gets stuck on the windows logo or I get a blue screen with a bunch of writing.

The blue screen tends to happen with the computer goes into hibernation. So I changed my settings to that it doesn't happen but I would like to fix that so that I can give my computer a rest during the time that I'm not using it.

I have checked for malware, viruses you name it... nothing.

HP HPE-180t
Windows 7 SP1
Intel core i7 930 @2.80GHz
9.00 GB RAM
Kaspersky Internet Security 2013

If you need further info please let me know. ;)
ps I had wonderful support several years ago regarding my laptop.. thank you once again :)

The best way to do this is to simply turn it off; it will also save on the electricty bills too.
When I am not using my machine, I turn it off, because here in South Australia we have the second highest electricity charges in the world.

Can you tell us what the blue screen says; usually this is due to a recent hardware or software change; however, in your instance it might be the Hibernation feature that is malfunctioning.
Post back with the information about the blue screen, please.

Kind Regards,

Hi All,
this has me stumped.
Upgrading my PC (listed to the left) to windows 10 and it went through the setup ok with no issues but when it came to load up the machine on "first use" it went to a black screen with the HDD maxed out. stayed like that for hours so its reverted to windows 7.

Anyone got any ideas?

Looks like it's trying to install windows 10 and then rolling back to Win 7 due to issues, check the logs here, in case there was a roll back.

I am working on a Dell model : DCSLA

When I go to boot up I get the black screen with the Dell logo in the middle and the two options in the upper right corner to either "F2" for setup or "F12" for boot menu. I cannot get it to do anything else. It will not read from a restore disk or hirem's restore utility disk either.

I have checked the ram and it seems to be ok. It had two 1gig chips and two 512gig chips. While I am working on it I took out the two 512's.

I am thinking it might be a bios issue but I am unfamiliar on how to reset or fix that. I have tested the hard drive and it seems to be ok. I have a usb cable that allows me to work on hard drives via the usb cable and power supply on my own computer. So far I haven't done anything but look at the drive and it seems ok. The computer should still boot up to the bios without a hard drive.

Can anyone help me in this matter? Can I reset the bios or reinstall then somehow? I don't want to be messing around where I don't know what I am doing.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I do however see some jumpers on the motherboard. One is marked "clear pw" and the other is marked "clear cmos". Could this have something to do with it.

The computer doesn't have much in the way of information on it except the sticker which certifies it for Windows Vista Home Premium and of course the product key. The only thing it says in the way of model is # DCSL... Read more

Hi All, I updated my z570 succesfully from windows 8.1 to windows10 back in 2015 and using succesfullly without any problems. when tried to update from 1703 got error which used to rolled back with automatic repair and recovery to previous version automatically after 2, 3 hard shutdowns. Recently when windows 10 is updating to latest security and  other updates (I defferred the feature updates like 1803 using some MS windows utility, So proceeded confidently with update). However during update the laptop entered into this endless restart loop. After hard shutdown with power key 2, 3 times its showing message that 'Attemptiing Automatic repair' then 'recovery to previous installed version' but quickly again restarting back in loop.  I tried following other methods:1. Tried entering to setup by pressing F2 - no luck2. Created bootable USB and started laptop and pressed F12 continuosly - no luck3. Removed battery and pressed power button for a while and restarted hoping to enter setup - didnt helped4. used One touch recovery key next to power button while system is off hoping after system on takes me to sestup page - didnt helped If I could atleast enter setup or boot will try to solve, I Sincerely request memebers here to help me solving this issue. Thanks

Hi all,

I have recently (since today) had an issue with my PC.

I came home after uni today, pressed the power button on my PC, it started up normal, showed the mobo splash screen etc... yet when it got to the stage of loading Windows (Vista) it just got stuck on the black screen that normally appears about 1 second before the "loading windows" status bar comes up. It just got stuck there on that black screen for over 10 minutes until I hard reset the PC. Then it gave me an error screen saying Windows hadn't been shut-down correctly and if I wanted to load it into safe mode etc. I just chose the normal mode and then it loaded Windows fine.

I then shut down the PC.

Later that day around 7pm I powered on the system again, and the same thing happened again. The only way I could get it working was to hard reset it and then it would boot after selecting "start normally".

So I have tried:

-Performing a Windows repair from the O/S disk, the repair program couldn't find any problems though, and consequently didn't repair anything.

-Restoring to yesterday before I have had issues.

What I need to know is if anyone else has had this problem before, or has heard of it, and possibly if there is a solution? I have tried searches, but I don't have a keyword/error code specific enough to find any real answers.

Could it be hardware or software related? Or both?

The last thing I have installed was an Epson printer on the 4th, but I haven't ... Read more

Hello,I'm trying to fix my mother's computer, a Gateway laptop running win7 (if I recall it's 64bit, home premium).Problem is when we turn it on it appears to be booting, Windows welcome screen comes on, but after it goes to black screen with movable cursor. After a thorough search I have tried the following with no success:Safe mode - same problemChanging resolution - same problemSystem restore - same problem. Tried with multiple restore points up to 2 months oldStartup repair - indicates no problems, restart brings me to same place.Ctrl-alt-del - does not bring up task managerShift x 5 - doors not bring up sticky keysI was able to boot with ubuntu live usb, so hardware seems okOn safe mode with logging seems to hang at an avg dll. I tried renaming that with cmd prompt and next time i tried it was back.Any advice would be greatly appreciated, but I think my best option now may be wiping everything and starting fresh.ThanksEdit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum.~ Animal

Hi there,

I'm having troubles with my netbook that has never happened before. Lately it's been acting up. The netbook sometimes seems to go to a black screen with my cursor showing but cannot get out of the black screen at all. This happened a couple times now, and I'm forced to shutdown the netbook with the power button and restart it. This usually happens when I leave it idle while opened. Could this be a virus? I've had a couple viruses but I took them out. I did a full scan with Kaspersky Internet Security 2011. And an updated version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. The netbook was clean. I'll try to do a rescan and see what pops up. But is there any other tips as to how I should trouble shoot this issue? Thanks for the help!

A:Windows Stuck on Black Screen with Cursor....

If you had viruses, and cleaned them out, but are still having problems with the system........

You are better off backing up your data to external drive
Format disk and reinstall everything from scratch

That will be much easier in the long run

Hey There
I've been trying to install windows xp on an old netbook for at least 3 weeks.I actually managed to create a bootable usb using a program called WinSetupFromUsb cause Rufus wouldnt worked.Everything went smoothly i finished the installation within an hour and installed the drivers which i found on a non official website due to the fact that the company that made this netbook (viewsonic) does not provide drivers on their official website.Everything looked neat untill i shut down my netbook. When i turned it back on it would be stuck on a black screen with a cursor.

At first i thought it would be a driver malfunctioning.Well i reinstalled windows xp and this time i turned the netbook off without installed any drivers and got the same problem.Ive tried using the windows restore console and overwriting the registry files and restarting into safe mode but nothing worked.

Sorry for my bad english im only 14

I would appreciate any help

A:Windows xp stuck at black screen with cursor

If the drive in your netbook requires drivers (SATA?) they need to be installed before XP is completely installed. IDE drives are OK but there's a point during the initial phase that says Press F6 to install SATA drivers. Unless the drivers are integrated onto the XP install disk or you install them during F6, you end up where you are with a black screen and cursor flashing. I have had this too when I forgot to install the drivers at F6 prompt. For some reason it goes ahead with the installation to the drive but when you restart and there are no drivers, it stops. Most of my SATA driver install disks that came with my motherboards were on floppy disk though. I think XP SP3 may have had some SATA drivers added, but I can't remember for sure. As far as I remember when you press F6 it looks at the A drive or floppy with no chance to change it to a USB stick or something else. If you can get into safe mode maybe you can try to install it there and reboot.

First post, so please tell me if I make any errors. After having a frustrating malware which kept closing Malwarebytes, redirecting some links to other sites, disabling access to some sites as Symantec.com, I decided to follow a step by step guide to removing Malware, which I got up to a stage of using Combofix. The guide didn't warn me of any dangers, and I should've researched it, but now after failing the Combofix Microsoft Recovery Console, whenever I start up my PC, it's stuck on a cursor with a black screen. I managed to write this via Safe Mode with Networking. Any help?

Hello guys, sorry if posted in the wrong section.
I have a problem in my dual boot machine.
I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap).
Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.
These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.

Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options.
One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

Thnx for the patient hearing

In order to repair this, you will need a windows 8/8.1 installation disc, or a set of factory restore CDs from your computer manufacturer. You cannot use a windows 7 boot loader on a windows 8/8.1 only installation. They are simply not properly compatible.

Hello BleepingComputer forums
Laptop: HP ProBook 4730s
OS: Windows 7 x64 Bit
Warranty: Didn't buy from HP, bought from a guy that was selling the laptop
Yesterday, my explorer got stuck so i had to restart the laptop by pressing the power button, i turned it on, and then, Startup repair appeared, i left it to complete and then i went to sleep.
The next day i woke up, i opened my laptop, and then "Windows is loading files" appeared and afterwards a black screen appears and it stays there forever.
I read many solutions but none of them seemed to work
Such as:
-Removing the battery and the AC adapter and then press power button for 40 seconds.
-Entering safe mode and doing a full recovery (I cannot access safe mode using F8)
I can only access the ESC which is the bios and these stuff.
If anyone can help, i would be grateful because ill probably pay $200 and up.
UPDATE:
I just found out that i have the recovery disk, so when i put it in, the menu dosen't show up (System Recovery and Startup repair, etc...) But when i put the disk in, i can now access Advanced Boot Options including the safe mode and all the other things.
So now that i can access the safe mode, is there any way that i can have any access to my laptop?

A:Stuck at black screen after "Windows is loading files"

for hp PC's you can start a system recovery (fresh install of the OS) by pressing the f11 repeatedly when booting up the pc, it will take you into the recovery manager in there you can do a system recovery with or without backing up files

you can alternatively go into f2 for a diagnostic test to see what is failing (run all the tests)

I have windows 7 64 bit. I left my computer on over the weekend (was running a mine craft server from it) and I left to go on a trip. Sometime that night the server went offline. When came back today, I found m computer at the windows 7 recovery manager.

I have no clue what happened, my computer hasn't been acting up at all. I first tried a boot repair, and it didn't find any problems. I restarted it and a chkhd ran and it said that disks needed to be checked for consistency. I let it perform this and it began to "replacing invalid security id with default security id file xxxx." it finished but still got stuck on the black screen after windows loaded. I ran a memory scan and it finished without detecting any problems.

This black screen with cursor happens if I try to run in normally or also in any safe mode, so basically I can't do anything. I do not have any system restore points, there is no factory restore option (it's a gateway), and I do not have a windows 7 cd. Does anyone have any insight or suggestions? I've searched extensively and can't find any solutions. Thank you for any help, I'm kinda desperate. I really need my pc this week.

A:Black screen with cursor stuck after windows load

Also worth noting, I can not ctrl+alt+del at the black screen.
