How To Speed Up Computer

Q: How To Speed Up Computer

What are things to do to your computer to make it go fast?

I dont believe I have a virus- and I have not even half the space filled up...Christ I probably dont even have a quarter of the space on my computer filled up

What are things I can buy or just things I can do to make my computer move faster?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: How To Speed Up Computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer was running just fine til about a week ago. I am on a secure network that was before yielding 1/mb/sec download speeds on wireless router. I have tested the network on my laptop and it still runs just fine, however my desktop has become sluggish, the download speeds are down to 30kb/sec and the search function has been taken over by "searchfastfind.net" that Malware Bytes has failed to find. Today the internet would simply die and not reconnect, or my browser would redirect to dead sites. The CPU on any processes doesn't seem high, but my computer is screaming like it's running several programs at once. I am using Vista, all updates installed that are available and needed.

What would I do to figure out the sort of malware I suspect this to be?

Dell Studio 540S Windows Vista Premium 2 64 bit

A:Suspected Malware (searchfastfind.net) - Ruining Internet Speed and Computer Speed

I ran rkill.exe it found no known programs running, malware still seems to come up empty, but my cpu speed and internet connection are still terrible.

For an OS drive the advertised speeds really mean nothing to the average user unless you are going to be transferring large files all day. The most important thing is access time- how long it takes from the time you push the button until the application actually opens. No spinning circles with a good SSD.

This problem confuses me. We've been experiencing slower than normal internet speeds recently. We have Verizon DSL, only 3300 down. Lately we've been getting way lower speeds. I just checked using Verizon's speedtest and it came out as 72 Kbps down and 712 Kbps up.

We have two laptops. Mine is 1.6GHZ with 1GB RAM and hers is a slower 1.2 celeron w/ 1GB RAM. Both running XP. I've tried both wired and wireless.

Speakeasy gives me 292 down and 615 up. Now, beyond the fact that it should be faster down than up, look how slow it is down,.

I've done all the tweaks etc I was on with tech support and they sent a tech today and unfortunately I wasn't home but my GF was. He checked the lines inside and out said there was no problem with the lines.

Using his faster laptop he got a decent 2800 down. When she plugged in her Asus netbook same thing. The tech said the slow speeds were due to the slow computers

Now I know that our machines aren't the fastest and I know that internet speed when it hits your machine is dependent upon cpu speed, but I know we shouldn't be getting such low speeds.

When I lived elsewhere and had cable internet, my current laptop got speeds close to what my cable company said I should be getting. So I am doubting the tech guy even even though the two other laptops got better speeds.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Thanks,

Bernie

I recently had to reload Windows XP on my computer. Since I have done that, my computer has been running very slow. When I scroll down on the screen, it takes a few seconds to refresh the screen rather than being a smooth flow. Also media download speeds are slower. Is there a way to speed up my processor or something, or something I can reset to speed it up? I have a Broadband connection, but I don't think the connection is the problem because there is the same slow speed when I am not on-line. Any help would be great. Thanks

I need help speeding up my boss's computer. He is only using about 25% of his space, of 74.4 G available, he has 56.2 G free. He hardly has any files, but wants to increase his speed while browsing. Are there any specific settings I can check off or disable to help function improve. He complains that sometimes everything seems normal and other times it is slow...opening the internet, then going to a new page, clicking on tools or whatever may take more than the few seconds that it should. He uses google gmail for email and this is incredibly important. I just had success by removing google.com from compatibility view after his gmail went crazy and wouldn't scroll down, was enlarged, and not loading. Also, he has some virus protection from MS Security essentials, everything looks good, scans daily. In addition I already ran a disk clean up, did not compress files, but deleted the temporary files recommended. Any magic you can help me perform will really help me keep my job, thanks!

Hi emferry......please post your ENTIRE log next time, including the headers.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. Restart your computer. After we are finished with your log file and verified that it's clean, you may turn it back on and create a ... Read more

Probably, your problem is related to the clock of your computer. I have a HP computer with Vista System and it's clock is 1.8 Mhz. HD is 320 GB, Ram is 1 GB, but it is slow cause of the 1.8 MHZ clock. Try to use a 3.0 Mhz clock and you will feel the big difference. A problem is to find a HP computer with a 3.0 or 2.8 Mhz clock.

My computer is starting and running quite slow it is getting old, but still can run most applications.

Following specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Processor 4400+ 2.30Ghz
3GB
Windows 7 Ultimate (32)
ATI Radeon DH 3450

I don't play much games on it nowadays mostly use if for development, but the issue is it takes around 5 minutes to start and load everything. Yesterday I removed a bunch of applications using revo-uninstaller, but the Microsoft ones are the issue they commonly leave registry items behind but it's hard to delete them as they are linked to other applications. All my games are stored on a separate internal hard drive (Seagate 3Gb/s). I also use classic theme. How else can I speed the PC up..?

A:Speed up computer (Win 7)

Hi,

There are many ways to speed up the PC, the obvious one being to upgrade the RAM (if possible?)

1. Turn off Unused Windows 7 Features:

1. Open up ” Programs and Features ” from Control Panel.
2. Click the ” Turn Windows features on or off ” from the left pane.
3. Now uncheck all the Feature that you don’t use in Windows 7 and
restart the system for the changes to take effect.

There are many features in windows 7 that you can disable if not used.
Disabling these unused features in Windows 7 would indeed help in speeding things up.

2. Disabling the Search Indexing Feature in Windows 7:

1. Right Click the “Computer” Icon in the desktop and select “Manage”.
2. Click “Services and Applications” in the “Computer Management” window.
3. Click on “Services”.
4. You’d see a lot of services being listed inside the window. Find “Windows Search” from the list.
5. Right Click on “Windows Search” from the list and choose “Properties”.
6. The “Windows Search Properties Window” will open up. From “Startup type”
click on the drop down menu and choose “Disabled”.
7. Click “Apply” then “OK” and that’s it. The Windows 7 Search Indexing Feature is now disabled.

3. Disabling the Unwanted Visual Effects in Windows 7 to Speed Up more:

1. Right click on ” Computer” and sel... Read more

My computer is a Vista Ultamate, & it's a pretty fast computer. 5GB of RAM, 200 something GB of memory, but it goes SO slow when I try to download things.
My sister has the same internet connection but different provider. She has 100 Mbps/DSL.
My download speed is like 20 Kbps, & hers is like 100 Mbps.

What's up with this? Anything I can fix?

Greetings TSF

I've been working with Techpro5238 and Chauncey on speeding up my daughters laptop. They suggested I work with this forum to make sure the computer is clean.

I've tried to do the 5 steps but could not getie-spyad to run successfully. Otherwise I think I got the other steps done.

Here is one of the logs requested:

I wanted to delete some programs off my computer, but I am unsure of if I can. I have attached some pictures. I don't want to delete something (even if I don't use it) if it will effect something else I DO use.

The one picture is of my download folder. If I download a program and double click on the file to install it, do I still need that? If I delete it, will it effect the program itself?

The other pic is control panel view of programs - uninstall window
Aim 6?
Hp total care advisor
cyberlink dvd suite
sling player
hp customer participation program
shop for hp supplies
hp smart web printer
powerdirctor
muvee autoproducer
ffdshow

do i need these? they don't sound like anything that I use

thanks in advance

I bought my new computer 6 months ago and at the time was all excited with the speed....
somehow it has slowed down a lot?
why would this be and what can help me fix this?

does defragmenting help??

Yes, indeed defraging can help.
A good idea is to run a virus scan as viruses can very often slow your computer down.

Hope this helps.

I have a quick question. And thank you all by the way. Everyone is so helpful here! ( I am new oh and inexperienced at computers!) I want to speed up my computer. i was reading a book and it said there are some tools to help speed it up such as disc cleanup, Disk Defragmenter, and Chkdsk?? My computer is really slow so im trying to see whats wrong with it. I have done all the virus stuff. Oh and I deleted a lot of unused programs which I thought would make it so much faster and free up some space but when I went back under the C folder in program files, it was only like one less mb or gb whatever it is. haha cant you see im not that good with this stuff! Anyway, for disc cleanup... will that speed it up? I dont want to delete anything. Will it delete stuff? as for the chkdsk.... should I do that to see whats wrong and what is disk defrag. Should I do that. Im clueeelesss!!

I was downloading some files last night and then my computer just lagged up so I rebooted and when I logged in there was no taskbar and no desktop items. So ran task manager and ran explorer.exe and then everything came back but computer was running extremely slow and kept freezing. So I tried to run my AVG and I couldn't even run it because it was so slow. Could this be a possible virus or spyware? Any suggestions?
