Unable to enable Windows Security Centre (Windows 7) and computer runs slow

Q: Unable to enable Windows Security Centre (Windows 7) and computer runs slow

The Maintenance Centre of  Windows 7 gives messages that say Windows Security Centre is dissabled and should be enabled again.  When I try to enable it again, it shows the message : " The Windows Security Centre cannot be enabled."  The  computer has generally been slow the past couple days.  I ran MaxSpywaredetector, this showed a Trojan, but I was unable to remove any threats.  Running Malwarebytes showed no Trojans.  Could you please help me fix this problem?

Hi,

I am unable to turn on windows security centre service and the firewall on my McAfee keeps switching off. I have Malware Anti-malware (PRO) but a virus still got through. I ran a scan on McAfee, Super Anti-Spyware and Malware and malware found the following trojan msimg32.dll (Trojan.FakeAlert.RRE) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.Turned off the computer but still had the same problem with the secuity centre and McAfee Fire wall. The computer just switched off as well.

Can you please advise what I need to do to enable the Security Centre Service. I have clicked on services but there is no Secutity Centre showing, even after Malware deleting the trojan.

Hello,

My computer runs painfully slow. It takes awhile to open programs or even folders. It takes 10 seconds or so to even show the folders/programs listed in the start menu. Upon clicking on Internet Explorer, it takes time to open that as well. Web site pages go very slow. Minimizing windows are slow or it will freeze or leave the screen image on the computer for a while. If I drag a window, it will leave a residual trail of the window.

Open and closing programs and browsing the web are the most fustrating because they are very slow.

I have installed and run a complete scan using MBAM, Adaware and AVG Free AntiVirus. I also defraggred the drive numerous times and also uninstalled all programs that I don't use. I deleted old video and audio files on the hard drive. I ran a chkdsk to search for errors. I cleaned the drive using the cleanmgr functin in Windows.

What should I check next?
Dell Dimension DIM 4550
Pentium 4 2.00 Ghz
1.50 GB of Ram
Windows XP Home Edition SP3
60GB of 120 GB hard drive has been used

A:Windows XP Computer Runs Slow

Tell us the steps you took to run chkdsk.

Running chkdsk in read-only mode...accomplishes nothing. Did you use the chkdsk /r command?

Did you have adequate protection installed...before your system began to slow down?

Is the system current with critical updates?

When did you first notice problems with your system?

Hello,

I'm back again with another problem I couldnt fix outright. It is a windows 7 machine, a HP Pavilion dv7. At one time, it was one of the fastest smoothest running new computers (not including personally built machines!) I had ever used. It ran perfectly fine, until one day where it just stopped working properly. Everything became slower than it should be- There is typing delay (sometimes), the volume ticker thing delays (sometimes), IE sometimes becomes unusable it's so slow, youtube videos stutter to the point of a slideshow (again sometimes), and things like word and CPU-z take abnormally long to open. The machine seems "preoccupied"

There are no viruses or malware, it is fully updated, ccleaner'ed, defragged, and overall checked over- no obvious problems. I ran P95 for like an hour to just test general stability and it ran fine in that. There are no apparant bad or too many programs running.

I'm at a loss with this problem- any advice? You guys have never failed me before!

Thanks,
Will

Hi,

My McAfee just expired and I removed it from my computer to install AntiVir but when I did, Windows Security says Norton 360 is running even though I can't find any Norton files. I don't know if I'm protected or not and I believe my machine is infected. Also, I keep getting a message that Windows cannot get any updates. I'd really appreciate your help and I'm just hoping to clean my machine up and make sure that it's properly protected.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with an Intel Core2 Duo CPU 2.33 GHz with 3 GB of RAM and I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium Svc Pack 1 and IE 7. And I believe I have the install disks. Izipped the attach and ark files together accidentally, I hope that doesn't cause a problem.

Thank you very much...

A:Computer runs slow, windows can't get updates, can't remove Norton

Hi -

I don't see anything in the logs to suggest infection.

Run the Norton Removal Tool

1. Download this file:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Save the file to the Windows desktop.

2. On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Also run the McAfee Removal Tool.

Download the McAfee Removal Tool.

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

You should now be able to install Avira. (nice choice) Run a full system scan, save the log and post it. (Click on the Report button when the full scan is complete.)

First off, I'm not a computer person so some threads are over my head. But I thought I would try getting help here because I have no idea what else to do. I'm in the process of sending resumes, so the timing for my computer to break couldn't be worse. I hope I explain this correctly. This has been an ongoing problem for about 2 weeks. I've tried a lot of different things that I've read online. Nothing seems to fix the issue.

Sony Vaio laptop - Windows Vista Home Premium

Problem: It randomly started having major problems even loading one page. I didn't make any changes previously. I was getting a "host" error message saying something about not being able to connect a program to the host. (Sorry I don't have the exact wording. I'm using a library computer to post this.)

Checking for problems: I did a system restore but the only date option I had was a couple days previous. Under updates, it showed the last Windows Update failed. That "seemed" to perhaps start the problem. I'm not 100% sure about that though. I wanted to "set" a new restore date to maybe two weeks previous, but it wouldn't let me set my own date.

I had expired trials of both Avaste and Malwarebytes. So downloaded new trials and ran both. No viruses were found. Malwarebytes found a bunch of junk but nothing critical.

I shut off the router and let it sit for 30 minutes.

I defragmented.

I installed CCleaner and ran ... Read more

I am trying to transfer the program MagicInfo from a machine I believe is about to crash over to a different computer. Both computers run Windows 7. The old computer says it runs Windows 7 under properties, but the display looks like it is pre Windows XP, with
the grey taskbar. I called MagicInfo tech support and they told me I needed to change the formatting of the USB in order to get the program to transfer. In all formats except NFTS, I could not get anything to back up to the flash drive and had to copy the
files from the C drive. In the NFTS format, I can get it to back up directly to the flash drive, but when I bring it to the other machine, the restore wizard still cannot find a backup to restore from. I am not sure how to proceed from here, and I have to
get this done soon. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: Enabled Sharing on the USB and tried to get it to work via the network. Found it in the network and it says Windows does not detect any files to restore from. Is it even possible to restore this program in this way?

Thanks!

In "Services" scroll down and right-click on "Security Center" and click "Properties" in the 'Startup Type Menu' drop down box make sure it says "Automatic" click OK and then click "Restart" (it's in Blue letters) and OK again. "

I've done that a few times...but everytime i reboot..it becomes disabled again.

I've just re-downloaded spybot and on it's first scan it found the following:

Problem:Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCentre_disabled (SBI $2E20C9A9]Settings
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Services\wscsvc[is not]W=2

AVG 9 antivitrus is running and suggests no problems, but Windows Security Center tells me I have 'tracking software found', asks me to run a security scan and deletion as 'current pc state infected'.

I'm prevented for accessing internet and suspicious because pop up is titled Vista internet security - unregistred (note typo) version.

Is this a virus or something conflicting?

Sounds like the machine is infected with a rogue "antivirus" application.

Do your best to follow the steps outlined here, and post the requested logs.

http://www.techsupportforum.com/f50/...lp-305963.html

After running through all the steps, you shall have a proper set of logs. Please post them in a new topic, as this one shall be closed. I currently have as many open topics as I can effectively handle; this will have you back in queue with the proper logs so an available helper would be able to assist.

If you have trouble with one of the steps, simply move on to the next one, and make note of it in your reply.

Please note that the Virus/Trojan/Spyware Help forum is extremely busy, and it may take a while to receive a reply.

I can not locate it in registry...nor in start-up entry in MSCONFIG. The icon in the tray does not show any option to disable it.
Similarly one of my PC with Xp-SP1 runs scandisk to check disk drives with every startup (even if i allow it to complete the process and ensure NO ERRORS, it repeats itself in next boot)

I've just been onto a blog website and clicked on a video and it automatically started downloading some virus protector. I couldn't stop the download and even when I unclicked "I agree to to the terms and conditions" it still carried on.

After a bit of searching I found out that the software is called Windows Security centre.

Now I've tried going to the control panel and trying to remove the programme but it's not even on there which made doubt it even more.

Here's a picture of the software: http://i253.photobucket.com/albums/h...untitled-2.jpg

I'm not very good on computers so really need some help, only yesterday my laptop came back from a repair (that was just a broken button) so I don't fancy taking it back in and having to pay twice in two days.

Does anyone know how to remove it from my laptop?

Much appreciated.

Should I be concerned?

Me too....have the same problem as CharlieO, except my Spybot picked up "Windows Security Center.UpdateDisableNotify", along with "Windows Security Center.AntiVirusDisableNotify".

Is this related to the fact that I keep getting those annoying popups from Microsoft, saying that my antivirus protection needs to be updated and that I should sign up for automatic updates with them. I'm running AVG, which I update frequently BTW.

Hello all,

It takes the shape of a windows security centre alert however is clearly fake, and keeps askin me to pay for a subscription (which I am not too inept to do so). I have attached all of the documentation suggested by the preparation guide and would be ever so grateful if anyone at all would be able to assist me. I have repeatedly carried out system resotres, however they only last for so long. It also seems as if my McFee subscription is useless.

I look forward to any kind soul out there that would be able to help me.

Hi,
I've just cleaned a virus off my computer, for the most part I believe, and it was that msn "hey is that you" virus. So it disabled my windows security centre and I'm not sure how to reactivate it. I tried activating my windows firewall, restarted my computer, but it still says my security centre is "unavailable because the 'Security Center' service has not started or was stopped. Please close this window, restart the computer (or start the "Security Center" service), and then open the Security Center again." How can I reactivate it? Is there still some sort of reminiscence of the virus (I don't think there is)?

Hi,

ehshell.exe both normally and as administrator.

When I try to start WMC using any of the above it looks like the
programme trys to start (blue circle appears for a few seconds) then
nothing happens.

The last time I tried to open MCE I recieved the following error message: -
C:\WINDOWS\ehome\ehshell.exe
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may
not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Every few days after restarting the PC an icon appears on the system
tray informing me that WMC is downloading guide information from the
net for the TV channel listing. When I right click on the icon and
select open WMC I get the following error message: -
"Unable to start Windows Media Centre"

I have tried setting up a new shortcut, uninstalled and reinstalled
SP1 and have installed the latest driver for my video card NVIDIA
GeForce 7650 GS driver 7.15.11.7490 and have still been unable to
resolve the problem.

I have searched the net and Microsoft support and have been unable to
find a solution so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hello to everyone guys.

This looks like a wonderfull forum.

I 'll describe the problem with as few words as possible, I know that time is of great value for all of us.

I have Windows 7 64 bit Home premium edition installed and a few days ago I burned some DVD movies and I noticed that only 86% of the movies was burned and this is something I never experienced before.

Now I have Mcafee antivirus installed and at some point the software informed me that the virus ZeroAccess.b(Trojan) was detected and abolished.

The problem is that this message kept on appearing almost every five minutes which made me realize that something is wrong.

I contacted Mcafee and the support they gave me was absolutely ridiculous
and then because they could not give me any positive solution to the issue, they asked me to contact Mcafee Labs and pay to them another 89 USA $ so that they could deal with the issue.

Honestly I felt disgusted and I would never buy again any other Mcafee product.
What the hell do I pay them for every year, for their anti-virus and where is their support now that I need them???
And another stupid thing from Mcafee antivirus is that while the Firewall is green, which means that it is turned on, in fact it is de-activated.

Because when you open the menu after this green crap light, it indicates that it is de- activated and when you try to activate it , it automatically becomes de-activated just by itself. Totally hopeless.

Anyway, I tried to search... Read more

I recently returned home after a year travelling and have set about updating my spyware programme. After years using Spybot S & D I read around and chose to download the free version of Spyware Terminator. Having installed it and uninstalled S & D I scanned my machine. Spyware Terminator recognised two threats;

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\PCANDIS5.SYS
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\IPFLTDRV.SYS

I looked up CANDIS5.SYS and found that it may be a Trojan so blocked both of the above. After this Windows popped up stating that the Windows firewall was turned off and I have not been able to start the security centre since. I have since ran a full AVG hard disc scan which gave these virus results;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\user32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

AVG changed all of them.

My system has slowed down since these changes and there seem to be far too many processes running.

Hi everyone, as the title suggests my windows security centre cant be started, more accurately it can when I run services from the start menu, set it to automatic and start it, but after 20 seconds it turns itself off, and wont let me start it again. I know there's some orrible little bit of malware or something in there, because I get pop ups from IE (even though I use firefox) and when I search with google, when clicking on a result I get redirected to some other page.

I tried to research how to fix it up myself and posted on the original windows security center can't be fixed thread but I reached the limit of my crude abilities and was advised that this would be best suited to a new thread. So here is where I'm at:

I downloaded ESET scanner and sent it to work, it came back with this:

C:\Users\Dell\AppData\Local\Temp\svchost.exe a variant of Win32/Injector.DWK trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\Dell\AppData\Roaming\lsass.exe a variant of Win32/Injector.DWK trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Users\Dell\AppData\Roaming\sfvkaf.exe a variant of Win32/Injector.IGX trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I have a basic understanding that this far from the ideal. I havent taken any options to delete the files yet, because I reckon the files that are infected are quite important. but again, I'm a novice in this game and probably need some hand holding while I take this on.

It might be worth noting that my antivir online protection ha... Read more

Something keeps turning my Windows Security Centre Service off. I can re enable it via services.msc but after a minute or so it shows as off again (red cross on flag). I have run Kaspersky, SUPERAntiSpyware, Malwarebytes and a Microsoft safety scanner all report no issues found and yet something is turning the windows security centre off. I also find my webpages are redirected and see either goingonearth or webtimes.
Please help

When I boot into Safe Mode without Networking, I get the Action Centre message "Windows Secuirty Centre is off". I just wanted to check if this is supposed to happen or if it is something to be worried about?

A:Windows Security Centre is off (Safe Mode)

This is normal. Try to avoid questionable websites when using Safe mode. You might also notice that you don't have any audio.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows...er-in-safe-mode

I am unable to start the security centre service. It gives me an error message:
Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.
I suspect some malware as it has disabled all services. Now I am not able to connect with Internet and do the scan. Please help

A:Windows cannot start the security centre service

Welcome to Seven Forums Rmalik. This does have all the earmarks of an infection. You might see if you can put Windows Defender Off line on a USB or CD using a friends PC, and run a scan with it.

Windows Defender Offline

The following dependencies are required for the Security Center Service:

All should be set to Automatic and Started.

But you need to scan as there is something that has affected services.

hello im pretty lame when it comes to computers but ill try to explain the best i can.

yesterday avg said it was out of date and needed to update upon opening. nothing odd there so i updated it, but it stopped twice while updatind saying there was not enough memory and the update program crashed.

i restarted and tried for a third time and the download finished, updates were installed and it said it needed a restart for the changes to take effect (never had to do this before) so i did.

after reboot windows security centre flashed up saying avg is reported as out of date and i should update (again). i tried to load avg and nothing happens. i have used adaware to have a scan to see if anything downloaded that shouldnt have but it finds nothing.

problem is since then i have been getting lots of problems, like comp running slow, graphics card crashing, windows failing to boot and so on.

any clues whats going on? should i remove avg and reinstall?

thanks for any help jim

A:probs with avg8/windows security centre
