I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Dell 3252 having audio problems and start menu problems

You appear to have a Dell Inspiron 3252 desktop.
What's the exact "service tag" number and "express service code" number on yours?

It appears to have Realtek ALC3600-CG 5.1 channel high definition audio.
HERE is the Windows 10 64-bit driver for it.

--------------------------------------------------------------

You should consider getting rid of the IObit-related apps that are installed in that desktop.

Hi!

I recently installed Origin and Battlefield 1, and soon after Windows reported problems with high def audio bus. For some reason I have three of those in device manager, and only one of them shows a problem. Some of the sound in Battlefield 1 is also gone. After a few weeks the start menu started glitching, not working all the time. For a brief time I used a mic that I have not used before, I don't know if that's relevant. Neither of these problems occured at any point before Origin/BF1/mic. I have tried updating drivers, both from internet and from list, without any luck.

What to do?

Dell Inspiron 3252 running windows 10 - A little Dell notification asked if I wanted to update the bios with the warning that the process could not be interrupted.  I had time and no known power outages were scheduled. So I shut down everything I was doing as to not lose data as per the screen prompt request.   The process started.  I then got a blue screen of death with a stop code that I failed to capture.  It then tried restarting.   The screen said a restart was in progress.... then nothing...about 20 minutes later still nothing appeared on the screen.  I forced it to shut down via the power button. Upon pushing the start button again to start it up  the power button turned a solid blue, the fan turned on, the light on the CD rom flashed, the hard drive light blinked, no beeps and nothing on the screen, no lights on the keyboard.   Repeatable time after time.  Have plugged into a different monitor and still nothing on the screen.  Have removed all periphrials other than keyboard, mouse and screen. Still repeatable.
Searched the help info.  Have no blinking lights, no beeps to indicate anything. Tried removing the CMOS battery.  Still the same. Have tried a bootable usb drive as per help section procedures and blindly hit the F12 key because there's nothing on screen to indicate the appropriate time.  At a loss as to what to do next.

Hello,

I did a search on BC and google but so far haven't found a solution.

I am experiencing a weird problem with the windows start menu / quick launch. I am unable to launch programs even though I can highlight and select them. The only way to fix it is if I reset the system but then after a day or two the problem appears again.

Could this be a problem with lack of resources/ memory?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Start Menu Problems

Just so I understand:

How are you launching your programs? With shortcuts on your desktop that you click on? Or when you say 'highlight and select them' are you talking about going into Start > All Programs? Both methods fail?

Also, how much memory do you have installed on this machine? Start > Right click on My Computer > Properties

This could very well be as a result of a malware infection. Can you tell us what Anti Virus you have (if any) and if it is up to date. And also tell us what Anti-Spyware you have (if any) and if it is up to date.

One more thing: If you have Anti Virus and Anti Spyware, when did you install them, before or after the problem started?

Hi all , i'm having a problem with my start menu and that is everytime that i want to open something from the start menu like MSN or Internet Explorer it comes up with a box asking me to choose a program in which to open this file and on some programs it says it is invalid, some programs like microsoft word need me to "choose a program associated for performing this action" and i cant seem to fix this and it repeats everytime that i'd want to open a program from there. On MSN i cant even open my emails straight from MSN because the same problem occurs , does anyone know how to fix this or whats the problem? Im extremely stupid when it comes to computers, so sorry if this is a very easy fix and a newbie question ! Thanks in advance.

Hello,

My Start Menu has been acting a little bit odd lately, for some reason no icons are being shown in the frequently used part of the menu.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

A:Start Menu Problems

First thing I would do is reboot and see if they rebuild. If that doesn't work then do the following:

Right click on Start. Click on Properties. In the Taskbar and Start Menu dialog box click on Customize. Under the general and Advanced tabs you can set your Start Menu options. Then close out by clicking on OK | Apply.

Have you installed any new programs or software recently?

hey all, my first post. My start menu doesn't have anything in it besides the stuff above programs(the spot where you can drag and drop stuff). Programs, Settings, Run, Find, Shutdown, everything is missing. I can still click on it but only the things i said up top are avaliable. something else strange is also happening and i'm not sure if it's related or not but i mine as well state it anyways, ^^: the text size of my web browser (Internet Explorer) keeps changing to the largest size it can. again, i'm not sure if thats connected to my main problem, the start menu issue, but its always worth noting. so if anyone could give me a hand with this i'd be sooo happy!

i've had this problem for a while now, it's slightly annoying but maybe someone has a fix.

i cannot edit, move the position of, delete, open a right click menu or do anything in the programs folder of the start menu, unless it is to run it. i can run anything in any of the directories but i cannot edit them in any way (changing positions etc etc). also the start folder isn't there.

i think some time ago i went into c:\documents and settings and edited the menu that way, ever since i couldn't change anything without doing it in there. and it doesn't matter how i name or list the folders/shortcuts they won't change in the start menu. i can however delete things this way.

anyone have any ideas?

Hi,

Always something.

I transferred some files from an old XP PC to this new one with a Cruzier flash drive.
No problems, all went fine.

But when I look at my Start Menu, things are now different.

I am using what I think is called the Classic View.
Guess it's the old fashioned (like me) one.

The right hand sied pane looks as always.
Search box is there.
The All Programs lists them like it should when clicked.

But I have nothing, anymore above the All Programs.
Just a blank, grey area.

If I open some program, and then close it, it does not appear here (anymore) like it used to.

I clicked on it, and played around with Properties and then the Start Menu Tab, but nothing I have tried changes the situation.

Also tried the Customize, and the the Default Button, but no change.

Any idea what has changed, and how to get it back to acting normally, like it has in the past ? What (likely) happened ?

Thanks, and Happy Holidays,
Bob

A:Start Menu Problems

Hi Bob,

Right-click on the start orb, select Properties and the Start Menu tab. Check to ensure the highlighted option is checked (ticked). Click OK.

For the past few weeks my Startmenu will be black (when you push the button to open the star menu) And some Microsoft windows programs will not open in the start menu such as MS Office 2003. It tells me Windows cannot run this program because it is not installed. My quicklaunch has issue once and a while that it wont load up. Sometimes the Startmenu wont even open. I have to access My Computer and run the programs manually. Is there any way to correct these errors? I mean it is bad when I cannot even access OpenOffice to make posts for my exercises. I run windows XP pro sp3. I have all te updates ad even the updated version Java 6 update 7.

This is my opinion, but personally I would start with a clean slate, it's nice to be able to remove malware but repairing the damage from it is another story, many computers are well on their way to a repair or reformat long before infection.

If you didn't build your own computer and have an option to run windows as a repair disk then I would do a clean install

A valuable exercise would be to run windows as a repair disk then attempt to remove any remnants of an infection(s) and use the clean install as a measure of last resort

Sometimes when I press the Start button, the search box appears at the bottom of the Programs list as it should and other times it does not. Those times, the programs list appears, but it is a short list and does not end with the Search box at the bottom, but with one of the Programs. It is as if the Programs list is truncated before it reaches the Start box.

I can't find any pattern to this.

I have tried it with the task bar set to auto hide and not and with indexing on and then off (but not "search" ... "search" is always on.)

After new Windows 7 installation I installed Family Safety Live on 2 of my computers (I have a 3 pack Win7 Home).

Every since installing Family Safety, when I click on Start menu it stays up for 2 seconds and disappears, which disables me (Admin) and all users from being able to use it all together. It's becoming very annoying.

Family safety does have Program protection enabled with specified programs.

I'm also running Program control within Win7 itself.

I think it has something to do with Family safety but I went thru all the options and I couldn't figure anything out. I wonder if Family safety has issues dealing with 2 PCs, but I did notice that in the settings it recognized both computers.

Really weird.

When I switch the additional parental monitoring provider (maybe a bad translation; I have the Dutch version) off, then the Start Menu behaves normal again.

Also every few seconds there is a blink in the keyboard icon in the task bar. As if something restarts over and over again.

Hi everyone,

First of all, thanks for taking a look and hopefully helping me fix a nuisance problem. I recently changed where I keep my start menu shortcuts in Vista (Home Preminum, SP2) from their default location to one inside my User 'App Data' folder.

Aside from the normal quirks associated with this kind of thing (restarting to refresh windows explorer, etc.) all was fine. Now however, for reasons unknown, Vista has created a new folder called "Programs" in the 'Jonathan' folder that contains only empty folders for 'Administrative Tools' and 'Startup'.

I've researched various user/admin rights and I can now delete this folder, made a little easier by using the Unlocker tool. However two problems exist:

1- This folder regenerates at random times, and will almost always appear after a restart.
2- Vista now thinks this is the default location for start menu groups and as such, new installs point to this incorrect folder. In some cases, I can't even browse to the correct folder when installing new programs.

So, my question boils down to this: how do I change this start menu default in Vista and how do I prevent this folder from being regenerated once I reset the defaults?

Thanks for reading!
Jon

A:Start Menu 'Programs' Folder Problems

The user profile folder AppData contains the Virtual Store used by Vista/ Windows 7 to write to in lieu of writing to a vitrualizable folder like \Program Files (not all are virtualizable in PF). You may have somehow interfered with this.

I would suggest making up a new user profile and either using it (preferably) or using it to match 1-by-1 each and every folder under AppData. That will be a chore in itself because file permission settings may come into play here as well.

Hi everyone,

I am new here so thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

My PC is quite old- but works really well normally. It is a HP running Windows XP.

My problem is that suddenly this morning the programs in my start menu disappeared with a few exceptions. By this I mean the short-cuts in 'All Programs' not just the recently used programs list. The programs still there are; Dropbox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Spotify, Outlook Express, Remote Assistance, some Accessories and Steam.

Whilst I have no idea what caused this I have done some things to try and fix it so far this morning- but with no luck.

This is what I tried:

1) AVG full scan
2) System Restores (2 points- 1 this morning and 1 from Wednesday)
3) Installed, updated and ran Malwarebytes (which found and removed 7 threats- can post log if needed)
4) Installed, updated and ran SUPERAntiSpyware (which found and removed 233 threats (all cookies)- can post log if needed)
5) Several restarts of Windows throughout process.

My PC seems to be performing normally (maybe slightly slower- but that may just be my perception). However I would like to restore my programs without reinstalling them all individually if possible.

Is there anything anyone can recommend to do or something I have missed?

Thanks very much

Luke

I have tried searching any answer that may be close to my question but have not found any that worked yet.

I 'm running Windows XP Pent 4 3.0 GHz 80GB 512MB if I forgot something let me know.

When I start the computer it goes to select user screen then I log on only the desk top wallpaper appears the start menu and desk top icons are gone. I went to task manager by control alt delete and tried to open system restore and I get a white screen like it is opening but it doesn't. I also tried the cmd and nothing. I can access some files but I cannot get to control panel, anything to do with the start menu or start up programs those folders are empty. I do not know what else to try and I have done this in safe mode and regular mode.

I can tell you my son is a video game addict (I feel the computer should not have these games installed on it) and he was having trouble connecting so he was running system restore a lot for about a week. (instead of checking wire connections his first fix option is to restore) My other son watches a lot of short videos online but I don't either has anything to do with the problem except maybe the over running the system restore.

They say they did not do anything to the computer for this to happen and my one son thinks he may have turned off system restore and turned it back on again.

I need to get this fixed so I do not have to share my laptop with them which prevents me from working. I have driven myself crazy for about a week no... Read more

I'm using Windows XP Pro. All users on are Administrators. No other accounts have this problem.

When I open up the Start Menu on one of the accounts, there is nothing in the left-hand column. When I right click and get the Properties, and try to Customize the Menu, the options don't save, and I'm stuck with nothing. I've tried clicking on the Internet radio button for "Show on Start Menu". I click Ok, then Apply, and Finally Ok again. But when I go back to the menu, it still has nothing in the left-hand column.

The second thing I've noticed was under Folder Options -> View, I tried to check both the "Show Hidden Files and Folders" button, and also un-check "Hide extensions for Known File Types" and click on Apply, then Ok again. But still, these options don't save and are reset back to "Do not show hidden files", and "hide extensions".

I can't figure out what's wrong. I checked as many forums as I could find for a similar case, but couldn't find any. This is driving me nuts. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I just managed to get rid of the xp internet security virus using the methods on here. Problem now is if I try to open internet explorer from the start menu it brings up a menu asking me to choose the program to use to run it. I choose internet explorer from the list and it briefly pops up then disappears and takes me to c:\documents and settings\(username) instead. I can run internet explorer from the icon on the desktop no problem so it not a major issue more like an inconvenience. Anybody got any ideas how to sort this?

Edit: Tried messing about a bit and it works if I right-click and choose 'browse without add-ons' but not simply 'browse the internet'. Strange one.

Final edit: Sorted it. I removed it from the start menu then went to program files>internet explorer, right clicked on the ie icon and selected pin to start menu. Seems to have sorted the issue.

A:Problems opening internet explorer from start menu.

Right click on the shortcut and select Properties. In the Target field you should have something like : "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"

I recently completed a fresh install of Windows 10 Pro.

I had a windows update problem, most specifically with Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3185611) - Error 0x80004005.

I eventually was able to download it form Windows Catalog, and install it manually. Windows Update indicates I am up to date, but a problem was never resolved.

Since I first did the install, I noticed that under Settings > Personalization > Start, two settings were missing: "Show More Tiles" and "Occasionally Show Suggestions in Start"

Also, while I can extend my start menu to the normal width (tho not as wide as with the benefit of the "Show More Tiles" setting), I can only add tiles "three wide", as shown in the attachment.

From what I understand, Show More Tiles was added back in the November 2015, 1511 cumulative update, but I don't know what, if any, the problem getting the updates had to do with it.

Could any of my notification settings be affecting this?

Hi, what's your current build number?
(Windows key + R, type winver)

I'm using latest 1607 anniversary - bear in mind MS keeps making changes to the start menu (yet another reason I never use it personally!).

Your 2nd screenshot does show 'show more tiles'. This is what I have:

Some differences suggest you have an older version of Windows.
If you have build 1511, upgrading could deal with any issues, assuming no new ones appear- as some have found!

Current tile size options appear to be based on x2. (I recall when x3 was available).

I installed windows 10 a few months ago and I was using it for about 4 weeks, then one day everything on my task bar (including start menu, cortana, calendar volume) stopped responding, only my opened windows worked (Chrome, skype) and there was no sound and the brightness could not be changed. A reboot fixed this, but its been happening every 3~9 days! (note I don't shut down my laptop at nights) And today it happened 3 times! it is very frustrating to have you system go nuts on you randomly. I contacted Microsoft Answer desk and found out how bad customer support is, they could not fix my problem, they just did some random stuff and eventually said that a future update will fix it.

This problem, I'm sure, will not be solved by the community but I needed to tell you about it in case its connected with my current problem; When I play an online MMO (War Thunder Ground Forces) and have my arrow pointed at an area which would be the start menu if the application was minimized and click, the game suddenly minimizes and the start menu pops up! This is infuriating because in this game I have my gun pointed at an enemy and click to fire, only to have the start menu pop up and my game to (sometimes) disconnect and kick me out! I'd really appreciate a fix.

Hello harut2K Welcome to the Ten Forums!

By your description it sounds all too much like you saw the 10 install as an upgrade on the laptop there and have run into almost the same problems a laptop here saw back in August however. The upgrade install came out "Buggy as all H-"! Now the unfortunate side will be something you are now going to be more willing to accept however with all this going on. Time for a Clean Install of 10!

With 10 already being on and activated you won't have any worries at this time about seeing a clean copy of 10 activated since the MS servers already have a record of your laptop. The clean install will fix everything since you are also likely to start seeing other problems surface as well. Forget ideas of using the System File Checker or Disk Check tools since the problem is generally a result of things not going on fully during the 10 install as they should have and you have missing elements only a clean install can see replaced effectively.

Better plan on a wipe of the entire drive including the OEM primary however! Why? On the HP laptop that was upgraded here the decision to see a small back up partition created on the single one drive only model that won't be seeing any external HDs used was met by a stubborn OEM primary you couldn't shrink in size! That had to be removed entirely for a fresh brand new primary. Since not a lot will be going on the primary could be shrunk down in size about 200gb to allow for a recovery partition ... Read more

I have been unable to come up with a rhyme or reason to this problem.
For some reason the Windows 8.1 start button will no longer respond to a right-click.  The context menu will not come up.  You can see that the active window is no longer active because the border color changes.  The start button works as
expected when left-clicking it.
I first noticed this on a brand new Windows 8 machine that I upgraded to Windows 8.1.  The problem occurred while I was messing with trying to customize the default user profile.  The next time I logged in with a new user account the start button
was broke.  The system I was using was stripped down.  It had NO additional software on it except the drivers and necessary associated applications, and all available Windows updates were installed.  I chaulked it up to something I messed up.
Next, I reformatted 20 lab computers with Windows 8.1 Pro and joined them to a Server 2003 domain.  Users have roaming profiles and folder redirection policies.  The folder redirection policies redirect AppData, Documents, and Desktop to a folder
on the server and the contents of these folders are shared between Windows XP and Windows 8.1.  The roaming profiles are unique and new.  Thus far all users have only logged on to Windows XP so they have the version 1 profile and when they logon
to the Windows 8.1 box a new .v2 profile folder is created.
Today, we logged about 12 users into these i... Read more

A:Problems with new start button right-click context menu

I was able to get mine to work after I copied the local Administrator WinX directory to my profile and then restarted the computer (log out and then back in probably would have worked as well).  The WinX directory in the Admin profile is located
here:  C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WinX
Though, I'm unsure of why this happened in the first place.  Though, in my organization we use a network Default User profile that was created in Win 7.  So, maybe logging into this Win 8.1 computer used that Default Profile and when it upgraded
it to the Win 8.1 format it didn't configure the right click menu correctly.

hello... i'm new to these forums so please forgive my geneal ignorance about some issues...

ok, i'm getting married in 3 days and all my info in on THIS computer but THIS computer is also having a slightly, kinda big problem.

The desktop, and icons, and start menu all disappear when i boot up. When i boot my comp it boots to the desktop then as the start up programs start to load the screen goes 'blank' meaning no icons, no start menu, just wallpaper... then the icons flash on the screen for about 5 sec.... the go blank to wallpaper. After about 2 or 3 sessions of this the comp 'loads' to just the wallpaper and nada.

I can use ctril-alt-delete to access the task manager, where i can acces the 'run' new tasks to execute a variety of apps/services including iexplore.exe.

In fact I am trying this email on the very 'broken' machine. This comp uses a linksys wireless pci card for internet connectivty and it's working. but i still have NO start menu, no icons, and when i execute explorer.exe from the 'run' option in the task manager the computer continuely 'refreshes' the desktop but never loads the start menu or icons.

so far i havie tried using the selective start up... disableing all the start process (process system, process win, and load startup items), i've tried system restore, i've tried safe start.. and nothing helps.

I can access all my drives, including external usb free agent dr... Read more

Hello
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit which tells me I am logged in as the administrator yet I am not able to change any of the start menu or folder options settings. I change the settings and press ok but when I check to see if they have changed I find they have not changed at all and have reverted to their original settings. I have tried everything I can think of but to avail. Is it possible to repair W7 using the original install disk and if so will my installed programs stay intact or will I have to re-install them all. My internet security (Kaspersky) scan shows up no virus's.
I'm almost at my wits end . Never had a problem like this with XP.

You can create a new user account with admin privileges and see if the issue persists. Also try a Restore point before this occurred.
A repair install will keep most your current programs and settings, see the tip in the tutorial.

Hi, for the past few days I've had a few problems with my computer. I'm 99% sure I'm infected. I'm in no way an advanced user but I tried to fix this by myself. This computer is falling apart, really, but I just want to get rid of this virus. Sorry if there is irrelevant info. Just wanted to provide as much detail as possible.
Using Windows 7 32-bit.

I was browsing a website and accidentally clicked on an URL, I closed it almost immediately though. I don't remember which URL is it but ever since then my PC has been acting strangely.
I ran Malwarebytes, TDSSKiller (found nothing) and other programs like SuperAntiSpyware. SAS found 591 tracking cookies, and since there were too many suspicious cookies I let SAS do its job and delete them. Spybot and ESET Online Scanner froze on me before the scans finished.

Firefox is working ok and I haven't tested Chrome yet but I don't think it has a problem either.
Malwarebytes found nothing major on my first scan (I had a browser hijacker called MyStartSearch before this started occurring, and I finally removed it yesterday) and I just did a second scan with Malwarebytes now and it found PUP.FastStart again (I deleted it).
There aren't any suspicious processes running (as far as I know).

Around two days ago, my keyboard was having some problems. When I typed "?" for example it would bring up }? instead, and some letters were randomly capitalised sometimes. It's now fixed; could have been a hardware problem.

A couple days ago, my computer got a blue screen and said it needed to restore itself. My computer restarts, and the desktop is blank except for the recycling bin, mcafee security, and Epsom scan. My start menu is also blank, and not just the program side, the right side is blank and my user icon has been switched to the default flower. I can search for my programs and such, but I cannot use firefox due to an error message that I can't click out of every time I try to use it. When I try to play a video in chrome it runs very slowly and occasionally crashes. Every so often Internet explorer will open with "res://C:\Program%20Files\Internet%20Explorer\SZRes5EN.dll/homepage_protect.HTML" in the address bar. Also whenever I try to access websites sometimes it will direct me to different websites such as "22200.c.evoplus.com". I tried searching for help and using Microsoft security essentials but nothing worked. Can somebody please help me?

Hello Rossd23 and welcome to TSF,

It sounds like you are having a virus/malware issue...

Let's see what happens in Safe Mode.
Cold Boot your computer.
Immediately after the BIOS splashscreen begin tapping F8.
This should bring up the advanced boot options for Windows.
Select Safe Mode using the arrow keys and press enter.
Log onto your user account. Do the issues occur in Safe Mode?
