I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Guys,
With the new Second Edition of Security Update Guide, it is difficult to follow all updates on all OS's. All KB articles are listed on all Servers version.
Before, with the Microsoft Security Bulletin, it was possible to properly approve required patches on all versions of OS's on (WSUS 3.0 SP2) on a single click. But now each KB should be approved one-by-one.
Do you have a remedy to this?

Regards,
Kavi

According to the Security Update Guide FAQ, "[i]nstead of bulletin IDs, the new guide [Security Update Guide] pivots on vulnerability ID numbers and KB Article ID numbers." Then why are advisory numbers also being used (e.g., ADV18001)? What's
the difference between a security advisory and a security vulnerability other than their numbering?

I tried to generate an API key for accessing the SUG API (via the developer tab-> Generate new key) and was redirected to login (despite being logged-in). After the log-in, the page came back to developer tab and immediately to the SUG home-page. So I
went back to "Developer" tab and again had the same "Generate API key" button.
The key generation thing seems broken. Maybe you can consider bringing MSRC-CVRF.zip downloads back until the API is stable enough to use?

Hello MS Security team,
I would like to make a suggestion for the Security Update Guide.  When selecting a product, the UI truncates text, making the selection a guessing game.

After choosing a Product Category, the two-column Products Selection window truncates the text, making it difficult to choose. This is especially prevalent when "Windows" is the category selected.
Please consider updating this UI rapidly to improve usability of this tool.

I have some computers I'm currently just managing updates with Windows Update.  A computer will appear to be 'up to date' on patching.  However, if I run something like `wmic qfe list` or `Get-Hotfix` and I get a list of the patches installed
on the computer I will find that of the 9 or so listed for that windows build and time range in the Security Update Guide, only 1 or 2 will actually be installed.  I'm struggling to answer for compliance how I know all the patches that should be installed,
are installed, when the one source I've found for available patches seems to show I'm not up to date, but Windows Update seems to think I am up to date.  Thanks for the help.

Two new icons appeared in my Start menu (Online Security Guide and Security Troubleshooting with link to www.pcprotecttools.com) and a baloon in the quick launch menu, warning about a spyware. I managed to get rid of the baloon, but the icons in the Start menu are still there.

I followed the instructions you've given to a user with a similar problem. I downloaded HJT and created a log which I posted below. Hope you will be able to help. Thanks!!!

Hello,Any reason why your windows isn't up to date? You don't have even ServicePack1 installed! Remember that your system is extremely vulnerable without the necessary security patches/updates, so malware can get installed automatically while surfing without any problems. Please visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/network.mspx and update to Service Pack 1. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time. When your system is clean afterwards, then update to SP2, because updating to SP2 CAN cause problems as long as you are infected. It's better to print out the next instructions or save them in notepad, because you also have to work in safe mode without networking support, so this page wouldn't be available then.It is also important you don't miss a step and perform everything in the right order!!We also need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.Click on Tools, Settings. In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended). After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.* Please downloa... Go to here and download 'Hijack This!' self installer.
Save it to the desktop or other suitable place. DO NOT just press run from the website
Double click on the file and it will install to C:\program files\hijackthis and create an entry in the start menu.
Click on the entry in start menu to run HijackThis
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.

I've restored back to a restore point before the problem started and that doesn't work either.
I've searched for fixes and the most recommended is deleting the specific packages directory then reloading Edge using Powershell. This doesn't work.
If I go into Safe Mode without Networking I get the message "Microsoft Edge can't be opened using the built-in Administrator Client".

Just completed a clean install on a Lenovo Via Nano-based netbook (blow, fan, blow...) prevously running Win7, activated using previous credentials via the genuineticket.xml method. The ISO source is the same one that I have used on several other machines without problems.

After installing the OEM (Win7) drivers and going online to activate, I launched Edge to download Classic Shell. It started up with two tabs - one MSN, the other the "Start" tab. Each lingered for a few seconds, and then displayed the canned "this page is having a problem loading". Each tab then closes and the browser shuts down. Even using Edge as a PDF reader produces the same scenario.

Internet Explorer functions normally, and so I set it to the default browser for now.

Possible solutions I have tried, gleaned from various net searches, without resolution:
Create a new user profile and attempt to launch browser when logged in from that account.system file checker (no problems)dism ... /scanhealth and /restorehealth. No component store corruption found, restore completed normally.Delete the Edge app package folder from localappdata and reinstall Edge from powershell scriptTurn off flash support in the Edge advanced settings (using the 3 second time window that the browser actually stays running)Downloaded and installed all Windows updates as of today.chkdsk /f ... no problems

Just now I tried to load a PDF file using Edge, and after the crash checked the event log. It finds a crash... Read more

Hi. Online security guide and Security Troubleshooting have installed themselves onto the desktop, and there is also a message on the taskbar that pops up quite frequently saying that there is spyware on the computer and please click to install updated anti-spyware. This computer had Norton before this but nothing else, now whatever is on there I have added but I will remove if I need to. I was just trying to get this off here and it doesn't seem to be working so if somebody could please help me I would appreciate it so much. Thanks.

Ok.......so now you set up your DSL or Cable modem even ISDN, & even if you don't and your on dial-up, your ready to surf the web, at high speeds or low speeds, and not give a care about the stuff out there, just search the net right? wrong. You may want to do that, but the truth is the world isn't all nice, there are bad people out there hackers, and if your unprotected from worms, Trojans, and viruses, its like jumping into a swarm of bees stark naked, your going to get stung, bad. So here are some security tips you should try before you go out and surf the net, carefree:

1. WINDOWS UPDATE
You should make sure your Operating System is up-to-date, meaning having the latest patches, if your not sure if your Operating System is up-to-date, then Click Here and Click "Scan for Updates" and install any install any "Critical Updates and Services Packs" found. The windows XP and Driver Updates are not needed, but are recommended. Reboot the PC if you have to.

When my parents' machine got infected with this nasty yesterday, I tried Grinler's self-help solution here. Unfortunately, I couldn't get networking going in safe mode and couldn't update the anti-malware application; so though I did run it - it didn't solve the problem. Worse, this version of AV Security Suite would not allow the running of any applications at all in normal boot (not even rkill.com) and it reinstated its browser proxy server settings immediately if they were changed. What I did:Since I could still access the O.S. main functions, I used the file search to look for all files created on yesterday's date. I ordered them by their creation time, and then scrolled down to near the time of the infection and found several adobe reader files and two random named executable (.exe) files that were created in about a 4 minute period that was separated by any other file creations by more than 15 minutes. I removed all these to the recycle bin and rebooted the computer normally. The self executing application did not start and I was able to fix the proxy settings, run rkill.com, and update and run MBAM. So far the infection has not resurfaced.Point of note:Since I am sure the zero day exploit of Adobe Reader 9 was to blame for the infection, I disabled all Adobe Reader add-ons in the browser, and relocated the file C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.\Reader\authplay.dll as this page at adobe.com suggests: Adobe Flash, Reader, and Acrobat Security Advis... About this here

My question back in October I got a reply that referenced this guide. I requested some more info from the author about the settings for the VPN because the guide says the author doesn't use VPN or encourage purchasing any of the services out there; see search results below. I was planning to buy the Configuration Pack to save time, but it seems now I won't be doing that because if I require technical support, I won't be getting any at all because the author hasn't replied.

One thing I have noticed about the Configuration Pack is the ACLs which seems to deter any unwanted intrusions. Per the guide it says:
There is an optional Configuration Pack which automates some of the configuration steps and also provides the ACLs to partition away hacker friendly admin command line tools. Some settings can only be reached with the Configuration Pack.

Has anyone bought the Configuration Pack? And are you using one of the VPN services out there with the guide?

I have a requirement to get one of the VPN services out there, so I want to get my sources right before I do anything to my devices such as following the guide. It would take about 3-4 hours to do just 1 PC. I have another one to apply the settings to, so that would be 8 hours for both.

So what would be the way to do this? Follow the guide and apply the settings and see how the VPN service will work? Try to create a Configuration Pack on my own? I have other things to do and wouldn't ... Read more

Hi,

I am infected with something calling itself XP Internet Security 2012, and am attempting to follow the self-help guide. However I can't get past the first step! I have downloaded the registry fix file, on a clean machine, to a CD-R, but when I try to open it on the infected machine, the bugger is blocking it, and the CD appears to have no files on it at all. Help!

A:XP Internet Security 2011 Self Help Guide - Need help!

Try making the file again on the other PC and confirm its on it before you leave,There is also this methodIf you do not have any removable media or another clean computer that you can download the FixNCR.reg file onto, you can try and download it to your infected computer using another method. On the infected computer, right click on the Internet Explorer's icon, or any other browser's icon, and select Run As or Run as Administrator. If you are using Windows XP, you will be prompted to select a user and enter its password. It is suggested that you attempt to login as the Administrator user. For Windows 7 or Windows Vista, you will be prompted to enter your Administrator account password.Once you enter the password, your browser will start and you can download the above FixNCR.reg file. When saving it, make sure you save it to a folder that can be accessed by your normal account. Remember, that you will be launching the browser as another user, so if you save it to a My Documents folder, it will not be your normal My Documents folder that it is downloaded into. Instead it will be the My Documents folder that belongs to the user you ran the browser as. Once the download has finished, close your browser and find the FixNCR.reg file that you downloaded. Now double-click on it and allow the data to be merged. You should now be able to run your normal executable programs and can proceed to the next step.

This guide provides a detailed description of the most important security features in the Windows 10 Mobile operating system?identity access and control, data protection, malware resistance, and app platform security.

Smartphones now serve as a primary productivity tool for business workers and, just like desktops or laptops, need to be secured against malware and data theft. Protecting these devices can be challenging due to the wide range of device operating systems and configurations and the fact that many employees use their own personal devices. IT needs to secure corporate assets on every device, but also ensure the privacy of the user?s personal apps and data. Windows 10 Mobile addresses these security concerns directly, whether workers are using personal or corporate-owned devices. It uses the same security technologies as the Windows 10 operating system to help protect against known and emerging security threats across the spectrum of attack vectors. These technologies include:Click to expand...

Too bad that Microsoft do not pay enough attention to their mobile system.
It could be one of the best on the market but the lack of apps is slowly killing it.
