Windows activation rejects the product key of laptop after h...

Q: Windows activation rejects the product key of laptop after h...

Hello. The hard disk drive of my notebook failed so the computer was sent to the official service (firstly back to the store where I have bought it as it is still covered by warranty). Today it came back to me with a new hard disk drive but with no OS installed, so I tried to install it on my own as I am a computer engineer student. I know that in preinstalled windows laptops like mine's the product key is saved into the bios so I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 64bit (not Professional because I know that you have to install the exact same version). But the problem is that now windows can't be activated. Activation over internet reports "Error Code: 0xC004C003. Error Description: The Activation server determined the specified product key has been blocked". So I tried to do a phone activation but from microsoft support they answered that it is not a valid product key and that I should contact with the manufacturer! What's wrong?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a copy of Windows XP Professional that I slipstreamed service pack 3 into. It now rejects its product key.

If I install Windows XP Pro from this disk (an old one with no service packs) and then update to SP2 than SP3, it all goes well; but, if I slipstream SP3 first, it rejects the product key when I try to install.

Can anyone offer any insight into that?

A:Windows 7 activation with new product key

Your current Key is for a Volume License, and appears to be properly activated.
Having said that, if you were getting non-genuine notices with the WAT Update (KB971033) installed, I'm fairly certain what the problem is.

IS the Key shown in the report that same as the last 5 characters in your Key? If so, then you were given a counterfeit.
If not, please reinstall the WAT update, and run another MGDiag report, and post the results.

A friend of mine bought a used computer and asked me to look at it and see if I could get passed this activation message for them.

'This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can logon. Please ask a computer administrator to activate Windows on this computer.'

I am not all that familiar with XP home edition as I still mostly use Windows 98 on my equipment. They didn't get any disks at all with this computer, just the computer mouse, monitor and keyboard. It is an older Compaq but that is about all I know about it so far.

Is there anybody out there that knows anything about getting around this?

A:Windows Product Activation

To quote the Windows XP user manual...

To help reduce software piracy, Windows XP uses the product activation system, which allows you to install Windows XP on only one computer.

You can activate your copy of Windows either:

During Setup

By clicking Start --> All Programs --> Activate Windows

If you wait to activate your software, you can still use Windows for 30 days. During this time, you'll be reminded periodically to activate windows.

Hi hdaamr,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
OEM product key are embedded on the systemboard.
This should automatically activate if you install the same version that came originally with your machine.
Upon installation of Windows, try to update first before activation to ensure you have the needed knowledgebase patch of Windows.

Hi, due to being a complete novice with computers i have encountered a problem and therefore am stumped. Basically myhome pc appeared to have a problem by acting slow along with other problems so unwisely i performed a full system recovery from the initial start up screen(before windows). Now it boots up ok until the user account screen, when i select my account i get a message saying "This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you log on. Do you want to activate Windows now?"
It has a yes/no option but if i choose yes it starts to load my desktop but then goes back to user account page.
I have the original product code for my copy of windows but as i have hopefully explained i have nowhere to enter it.

A:Windows product activation

Hi Shawniej -
Error code 0x80004005
This problem may occur if a file that the Windows Product Activation (WPA) requires is damaged or missing. This behavior occurs if one or both of the following conditions are true:
A third-party backup utility or an antivirus program interferes with the installation of Windows XP.
A file that WPA requires is manually modified.
This is the explanation from Microsoft - Run a sfc / scannow check from Run box - Have your XP CD to place in the slot once the scan has started -
Also close all open programs and disable your Antivirus while doing this -

Thank You -

Generic OEM? or did you purchase a Dell installation disk to reinstall the OS on an existing Dell computer that came with Windows 7?
If generic OEM, then it should have come with a product key.
If a Dell OEM disc, you should not need to enter a product key, but if you are prompted for one, then you will need to get the product key off the COA sticker on your computer.

I'm running Linux on an Z240 workstation. I want to use the Windows license that came with this workstation to run Windows 7 in a virtual machine inside my Linux host OS. I no longer have the original contents of the hard drive. Unlike a notebook PC, there does not seem to be a sticker showing the Windows product key that I need for activation. I read there may be a Digital Product Key in the BIOS, but I have searched the menus without finding it. I had written down what I thought was the Windows Product Key before erasing the hard disk, but it turned out to be the Product ID instead. Any ideas?

Ever since I got WinXP PRO & SP1 there was no activation problems. Now, after a year, I'm getting the WPA dialog. What's the deal here? I click Yes and the next dialog tells me "windows is already activated. Click Ok to exit." I click Exit and it brings me back to the activation dialog again. If I click no it won't let me in, just back to the dialog; although the first time in a long time that i encountered this problem a week ago i clicked no and it did let me in. It never gave me the activation problem again until several reboots later, which is now. I went to safe mode and tried some reg mods but to no avail. How do I get rid of this annoyance?

Hello I have the same problem. There is no sticker under my pc. I updated to windows 8.1 and the update program asked me for a cd key. So i took just the key from my desktop because i thought it is only for verifying- now i have the problem that i cant activate it with this key- and perhaps overwrote the original.
So is there a way to retrieve the old key? Was it written on one of the documents?Thank you

Normal 8 to 8.1 upgrade does not ask for a key.  If you did a full install of 8.1 you should have gotten a key with the disk.  If you updated from 7 I have no idea what is the norm. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than I will come along with better answers.

there is probarbly a problem with the OS.
try this, get the windows OS Cd, it is important that the you run the repair with exactly the same OS.now booth up your systems from the cd, allow it to load up, chose to install windows, it will check for previous version already installed on the system and give you an option for repair, chose to repair and allow the repair to finish, when the systems restarts, don't touch any thing just allow it to continue set-up, when the user input interface comes up for you to enter the windows product key, enter exactly the same key as on your laptop. you will find it on a sticker under your laptop, if it is pre-installed or on the cd pack, enter, fill all other information and then allow the set-up process to finish. your systems restarts and it loads up normally. this should solve your problem.
let me know if any thing else occurs.

Hi, everyone!!

I don know this question is sensitive , or will break the international law or not. Please forgive me to post at here.

This question is about the windows XP product activation. Before, i using windows XP home(having original CD) but now I already upgrade to WinXP Professional (having non-original CD means that burn from other CD). Here is the problem, the Windows XP Pro CD I have is not the original one , so I'm facing problem that the icons always appear to remind that only remain 60days to activate the product. And then, and also required access to internet for activation(very annoying). but useless... >>>show "invalid product key"

So I try to type the Home edtion's original product key, but still useless, and show that "invalid product key" (may be original product key was already used in XP home before I upgrade it to WinXP Pro, is me right?)

So what will happened to PC after the 60days already pass, unable to use WinXP ? Any ideas to activate it ?

I am sorry to report to you that upgrading from WinXP Home with a legitimate disk and then upgrading to WinXP Pro with a copied (illegal) disk is not legal and does break the law. This can have legal ramifications.

Therefore, we are not able to assist you with any of these questions or to provide answers for an illegal operation on this forum. Thread Closed.

it has been a while since i posted here, looks like bleeping is still going strong!

anyhow... i was hoping that someone here could take a stab at my problem?

whenever this computer boots it displays an error:
"the product key used to install windows is invalid."
this install of XP is using the same key as all the other computers across campus, our site-license of xp pro (which going from the original cd is pre-SP1!) and we use a properly done sysprep setup.
the machine passes all of the validation software downloaded from microsoft,
both windows update and microsoft update passes it and allows updates to be downloaded
the stand-alone product activation/validation program also passes the system.
if it were my machine it would not bother me... but this is really worrying the client pretty badly.
it almost sounds like i need to backup her machine and re-image it (which actually has more of the newer software on it anyway)

thanks lots for your time!!

Hi Rex,

Check the date on the computer. (PM coming your way with explaination) It said Windows was counterfeited and would not accept anything else. If you have used the WGA tool, and did the manual things, you can call Microsoft. They will help you fix the problem.

One other thought. Is it possible you have a 500 (Insert number here) seat licence and have exceeded that number?

As the boss said... sometimes its easier and more cost effective to just reimage.

Hope this helps

I picked up this lenovo laptop and shortly after I got it the HDD went out. I replaced the HDD and Installed a full version of Windows XP SP2 then used the Win 7 upgrade disc I bought. I did a clean install of the Win 7 then I activated it at that time without any issues. Some time after that I started getting the message it wasn't a genuine copy. I rearmed the time period but I'm not able to activate the copy again with the PID. I get the message this product is for upgrade and not a clean install. I need to find out if I will be able to register this copy or if I will need to start over from scratch. I did try putting in another PID but it didn't activate with it. I haven't been able to change the PID back due to the message I am getting about the upgrade not clean install.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue.

The activation code, "Product Key" is unique to your specific installation. This is what you are actually paying for.

Well, the first question is "Is this a legitimate XP license?".

If it is ... I found a few references (google search) to spyware infections causing this ... so:

Please download Ad-aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/...2cleaner.shtml to download the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware at http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Download and install Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available.

Now click Mode menu and choose 'Advanced Mode'. Next click on Immunize to your left. Click the Immunize button (green cross) on top to Immunize your computer - you should do this each time there is an update. Now go to Tools->Resident. Make sure you enable TeaTimer after we are done. Do NOT enable Spybot TeaTimer Resident protection at this time. What this will do is monitor any system/registry changes and will ask you... Read more

Hello, I just wanted to ask a basic question.
Sorry if it's a noob question or if this was asked, I just want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong.

Anyways, a few days ago I had an error on my Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM and had to format it and reinstall it. Once I reinstalled it, I used the OEM Product Key located on a sticker on the bottom of my laptop.

When I right click "Computer" at the start menu and then click "Properties", I notice it says "1 day until automatic activation. Activate Windows now". Should I worry about this, or should this automatically activate my OEM Product Key with Microsoft in 1 day without any errors?
Just to let you know, I used the OEM Product Key before on my Virtual Machine. I hope that doesn't affect anything.

Also, I know the difference between an OEM key and a Retail key, but can someone explain how many times each can be used? Because I've read somewhere that an OEM key can only be used on the same computer it was pre-installed on as long as it isn't being used on more than 1 computer, something with the motherboard or something that makes it do that. And for the Retail key, I'm kind of confused about that.

Edit: Solved.

An OEM key can be used as many times as necessary on the same computer. Once the MotherBoard is changed, it is no longer considered the same computer.
A retail key can be used as many times as necessary on only one computer at a time.

As far as automatic activation, basically, you not considered activated. I would try to activate now. If it does not work try by phone.

Hi there,

I'm having a problem after reinstalling Windows Vista Business getting it to activate. I have a genuine license key and it is the correct one for the PC. I click to activate and it asks me to change the product key in because there isn't one in there. I put in the license key and click next and it throws back this error. Error Code 0xC004E003

Please could have some help urgently. Don't know where to go with this

I think you are going to have to click on the 'call MS option'......I've had to do that a few times, and it's relatively painless. Takes about 8 minutes or so.

Computer brand is MAXDATA (Can't seem to find any other info like model ect)

Before i go into the problem i have right now, i'll explain the problems ive had the last month or so as they may be the reason for my current problem. Anyway, recently i had the Google re-direct virus, download TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes and CCleaner which did the job and killed the virus off, aswell as making my PC virus free apparently.

For the last month or so though, i've had the Windows File Protection thing pop up, this is what it looked like:

It was asking for the CD, which i've lost. Therefore i just ignored it everytime i was browsing my computer like normal. Last week though, my computer started to become really slow. It kept popping up saying my computers virtual memory is low, and at times my pc would shut down and restart. So i opened up Malwarebytes up and did a scan. The results shown about 8 trojans, which i guessed explain for my computer being really slow, but it also shown two files in system32 were infected, i didn't really give this a second thought so went ahead and let the programme delete all the infected objects. I restarted the computer and this is where my current problem occured.

I start up the computer, its get to the " Welcome " screen and an error pops like below:
" This copy of windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can on. Do you want to activate windows now:

If i click Yes it goes to a screen idential to the o... Read more

I have formatted a PC in our company. I installed Windows XP Pro SP2 with OEM license. During the first boot after installation, Windows Product Activation appears. It's weird for me because usually it will first give you 30 days before activation. So, when I click OK to activate the product, there's no problem at first because it can normally activate and the message screen will appear saying that my copy of windows is already activated. When i click ok, it will log off and the name of the user will appear. When I click the name of the user, the "Windows Product Activation" will appear again saying that I have to activate again my Windows..... Any idea? I can't log on to windows but I can start it in safe mood. Please help me. I have reformatted this PC for many times already and the problem still occurs. Thanks.....

A:Windows Product Activation Loop

Wipe the drive with killdisk. It takes awhile but the drive will be
clean. I suspect something is still lingering around on the drive, as
windows does not do a very good job at formatting.
Do a google for killdisk, free download..

So my toshiba satellite crashed and everything I tried to fix it failed. I used the recovery disks and now it won't accept my product key. I've called every number for both microsoft and toshiba that's available and no one has helped me. I'm getting really worked up over this, because it's not even like the product key is invalid, it just says the 8th character is unacceptable! Am I really going to have to buy a new product key?!?!

A:Recovery Disk Windows Activation Product Key

Have you tried the numbers in this list: http://support.microsoft.com/common/international.aspx

I doubt Toshiba would be able to help with this problem but Microsoft should, as long as your existing key is genuine. Some keys do get blocked due to piracy or from frequent revalidation. Usually a call to Microsoft will get you another key.

Have you got a Product Key licence sticker on the PC?

Could someone explain how this works. I have built a new PC and have loaded my copy of XP on the new machine. It had to be activated and I did this on-line, no problem.

I know that activation is some sort of anti piracy thing, but my copy had already been activated - about 3 years ago - and it accepted the activation no problem. How does the system know I'm going to junk my old system? Same thing happened when I reloaded my copy of Office.

Hi All:

I am have a problem with the Produce Activation on a Windows XP OS.

I replaced the Motherboard, Processor, and memory.

The HDD was inaccessible, so I Imaged the drive, cleaned it, then reloaded the OS (Repair).

On reboot the OS popped up with a window:
(Window Reads:

"This copy of Windows must be activated with Microsoft before you can log on. Do you want to activate now?").

So I clicked Yes; there was a lot of activity on the connection for about 4 minutes, but it never seems to finish.

Every time I reboot it does the same thing, so I reloaded again (thought something might not have loaded correctly). No Change.

After a few minutesI get another pop up window:
(Windows reads:
Microsoft Feeds Synchronization

Microsoft Feeds Synchronization has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost).

I have used an Ubuntu Live CD (works OK). I also temporarily loaded another XP OS to see if it would work ((worked OK) Imaged drive before anything else, then replaced the image and did the OS repair).

Any Ideas? Please Help.

The hardware seems to be working very well:

Motherboard Bio-star MCP6P-M2 NEW
CPU AMD Athlon II X2 250 NEW
Memory Patriot PSD22G5002 (PC 6400) NEW
HDD Seagate 40G PATA
CD R/W Sony ? (works OK)
FDD ?? (works OK)

Thanks in advance

I quite literally JUST got Windows 7 working from a bootloader problem, but now I changed the CD drive and suddenly my product key is invalid! I'm getting error code 0XC004E003 during activation, with options to buy a new key online or "Talk to a support representative," which link is useless (it takes me to Microsoft Help and Support, from there to the MS support website, from there it runs me in circles with no options for live chat or even a way to email, much less a phone number). So I'm stuck and annoyed, please SOMEONE help!

I have a bit of a predicament, and I need to know if you can may be able to help me out. If there is another thread covering this problem, than I apologize and I would appreciate it if you simply gave me a link. Also, I'm a Grammar Nazi, so I'll try to make this fluent for you guys.

I have a Lenovo R60e ThinkPad laptop running Windows XP Professional 64x SP3 and It's giving me some trouble. It runs a Intel Celeron M @ 1.4gHz, 2GB DDR RAM, has no fingerprint scanner, 3 USB's, and a basic Intel Graphics card (I apologize for not having the information on-hand). I'll try to list the problems in order as they occurred. I hope not much of this is irrelevant, because I want to give you guys all of the information you need.
Computer started off with a couple of basic Trojans. After cleaning them off, it didn't want to boot on me properly. Safe Mode, here I come.
Safe mode was working well off, but not with networking. After restarting the computer numerous times and finally selecting "Last known good configuration", the computer booted back up promptly. Just to verify, I ran a chkdsk /f in command prompt, restarted the computer and it was okay. This is where I went trigger happy.
Instead of leaving it be, I wanted to make sure it was okay. I proceeded to run a sfc /scannow in XP, and make a OEM .ISO of the corresponding OS to use. It told me to insert "Windows XP Prof CD 2". I didn't have a CD, so instead I tried to go around it and boot from the disk in Safe Mo... Read more

First of all, apologies if this problem has been posted before and solved - I did look but I couldn't find it.
Second of all, I know next to nothing about computers and wouldn't have them if I didn't need them for college work. Because of that, I don't know what information you might need to know - so I'm just going to put everything I can think of!

I have an HP Pavilion g6 laptop that I have had for several years. Around Christmas time the hard drive died and I had to get it replaced. That all went fine except for the fact that I'm from England (where I bought the computer) and at that point I was on in Canada. Obviously I didn't think to bring my windows disks with me. And I wasn't going back to England any time soon. The tech guy who replaced my hard drive told me it was no problem and put Linux on the laptop so I could use it until I could get my windows disks. Or I could just keep using Linux.

As I was traveling around, I didn't have an address to get anyone to send my disks to me until a month ago, when I settled in Mexico for a while. My father bought me new Windows 7 disks from the US as they would get to me quicker.
I managed to figure out how to partition my drive and everything so that I was able to install windows without removing Linux (as I couldn't find out how to do it any other way. No one seemed to understand why I would want to remove Linux!). Everything installed correctly except for the fact I wasn't able to get online to activate it. I typed in the wi... Read more

A:Windows 7 Professional Product Key Invalid for Activation

This might seem roundabout but doing a System Restore to a point within the 30 day limit would work to allow you to activate. Wherever you are, it might pay to just pay the heavy toll to call MS to activate and some 3rd party phone services offer cheap rates if you have access to any phone.

Hi, I'm having trouble with my machine. Whenever I tried to open System Panel (the one that lists your machine CPU and the amount of RAM), it seems like my Windows Activation status tells me:

Product ID: Not available

After several hours of finding out the problem on Google, I found out that the Software Protection service seems to stuck at 'Starting' status, or it just won't start. When I tried to start/restart the service, it gave me an error:

However, it's worth noting that this problem is intermittent; the service sometimes does run.
How do I fix this without a complete reinstallation of the operating system?

A:Windows activation status tells me that Product ID is not available

From the Windows 8 Start Screen, just start typing pc info then click on the "PC Info" that pops up. Do you see the Product ID there?

My Lenovo Y510P HDD failed and I had to put in a new one and reinstall Windows 8. However, I didn't know which version it came installed with exactly, so I tried Windows 8.1 Pro.

Now it bugs me with watermarks (and progressively more invasive stuff) about activating Windows. However Lenovo is no help in helping me find my product key...

So I have a few questions:
I read somewhere that when your computer comes with Windows pre-installed on it, the product key gets written in the BIOS. Is it true?
Is the BIOS on the HDD I removed, or should it still be on the laptop's memory?
Does this mean I installed the wrong version of Windows, and if I find the right one, it will "activate" automatically using the aforementioned key?
If so, how do I find which version of Windows I had exactly, and
Is there a way to "change" the version (reinstall) without losing all my files...again?

Thanks for any help...

Hello I need help and badly I will accept all the help I can get.

Well something happened to my computer and it required the boot cd to install a corrupt file but in repairing it, it did something to my computer I tried to log on but it says that I need to activate windows I click ok and it takes me to my desktop and there a pop-up comes out it says that windows is already activated, I don't know what is going on but from the info I obtained it seems that in registry the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\wpaevents
is in read only it wouldn't be a problem but I can't even access the registry. If I try to go on to safe-mode it says that I need to activate windows but it has to be in normal mode.

I have a issue on my work laptop that I haven't found a solution to.

After rebooting my computer there is a message that states:
Your Windows product must be activated within _ days.
Do you want to activate Windows now?

After I click yes getting a Windows Product Activation window appears.
Windows is already activated. Click OK to exit.

Doesn't seem to effect Windows at all just really annoying to have to go thru this each time windows reboot.

Using Windows XP SP2. Hate to have to reinstall windows again to make this go away, I got another 5 days till product must be activated for an already activated Windows.

Ok so I have XP, service pack 3 (I think), on the problem computer. Nod32 pops up with a virus warning, something like Winsys32 .A ursf - something along those lines.

So I delete the infected file and reboot, thats when I get the WPA pop up. This thing wont even let me get onto my comp, it's either enter a product key or logoff. This would be no problem if I had a product key, but I have no idea where it is.

So I boot into Safe Mode and do a system restore, which lets me logon and then Nod32 immediately detects the same virus, so this time, I for some reason, select the Rename option. NOW I get the Windows Product Activation thing again AND when i try to do a system restore it fails everytime. Sigh, I am so confused, this damn NOD has betrayed me.

Please if anyone has any suggestions to get my comp back to normal, I am taking a lot of online classes for summer school term and the comp I'm on at the moment is a dinosaur.
