Trouble Downloading / MS Antispyware

Q: Trouble Downloading / MS Antispyware

I'm having trouble downloading files as in
"The page cannot be displayed"

but I don't think it's the site, as I tried others.

Last thing I did was install MS AntiSpyware, but basically turned off a lot of the auto-updates in that program.

Is it that or something to check in IE settings?

thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Trouble Downloading / MS Antispyware

Turn On Auto-updates in MS-antispyware and reset websettings in Tools>Internet options>programs> click "Reset Web Settings" and press '"Yes" then restore IE settings....Tools>internet options>Advanced> click on "restore defaults" then click "Apply" and 'ok'. if still not downloading uninstall MS-antispyware and then download any thing if it does then reinstall MS-antispyware and dont disable Auto-updates again.

I'm really hoping someone can help me. My school requires that we use Trend Micro Antivirus on our computers; I had that as well as Spy Sweeper. Both programs worked fine until a few days ago, when they let a popup for XP Antispyware 2009 through. I knew this was not a real program, and didn't click on it, yet it downloaded to my computer somehow anyway.

After trying to uninstall it through Add/Remove programs, I went online looking for help. I downloaded Spy Doctor and did a full system scan. It removed the XP Antispyware. I also did full sweeps with both my antivirus program and the spy sweeper. Spy Sweeper found a few things, which were quarrantined.

My computer had since become horribly slow - just opening a blank Word document takes forever; the internet is even worse. I'm a college student, and have papers due... it's been a very frustrating weekend. My next step was that I downloaded vCleaner and cCleaner, put the computer in safe mode, and ran both of them. vCleaner came up clean; cCleaner found 7 problem files and deleted them. I then went and defragmented the whole computer. Still no improvement - in fact, the internet might actually be slower.

I am completely stuck. I've removed all excess programs/anything I can find that I don't need. Currenly the computer is so slow that it's pretty much unuseable. I've searched online for help but everything I've found I've already tried. I did download a program in the beginning to r... Read more

So, I'm having trouble with Antispyware Master too. Twice now when I use IE 7.0 in the middle of loading a new page, I get the dreaded "Your computer is infected message". Luckily, both times I've been able to stop the Antispyware Master from downloading by shutting my internet port off immediately. I've looked in the windows system32 folder for various references to the files that other have said are part of this problem, and haven't found anything.I've scanned my computer with McAfee (which i use as my main virus suite all the time)I've scanned my computer with LavaSoft's Ad aware - nothingI then came across this forum and completed the steps that quietman7 suggested (thank you quietman7 )Super Anti Spyware found 503 bad cookies - most of which are benign. I was running four antivirus programs up until a moment ago when I unstalled Microsoft Security Essentials. I was getting annoyed when everytime I log in to my account I would right away get pop-up notice from MSE informing me of a potiential threat called "Trojan:Dos/Alureon.A" I take action and tell MSE to remove the threat and then to complete the process I had to restart my computer. This was happen constantly I barly be logged on without using the internet I get this notices from MSE.

I wonder is it worth having Microsoft Security Essentials on my computer and is it a very effect program?

I ran all four antivirus programs yesterday and they give a different number of viruses and adware. Each one detects something different then the others do. So how can I be bombarded with so many viruses when I hardly use the internet? When I do use the internet, Norton list what websites are safe plus I have a strong firewall from Norton.

Can anyone tell me which is the most effective AntiVirus software?

Hello and welcome to TSF.

Never run more than one antivirus program. While this may seem like greater protection, it can actually cause serious problems including slowdowns, system hangs and even crashes as they may be detecting each other's data base as threats. Choose one to keep and uninstall the others.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall

Hi all.

I couldn't find any threads that cover my exact issue and I assume that this is the correct section of the board to post in... anyway, my issue is as follows:

IE8 won't allow me to download any programs. The download box pops up as normal and the progress bar goes to 100% but then it just closes and the download is nowhere to be seen. The search function won't find it either; the program is not on my computer.

The only bits of advice I've found online is to download Firefox (which would be great if it wasn't for the initial downloading problem) and also altering permissions in the Component Services bit (dcomcnfg), which did nothing.

I've also turned off Windows Firewall and am using Kaspersky 2011 with all permissions set so that it doesn't delete stuff automatically.

I also had an issue with uTorrent that I believe to be related: Whenever I clicked on a link to download a torrent, uTorrent wouldn't pick up on the fact that I was attempting to add a torrent to the download list. I was able to add a new torrent by inputting the URL but they would invariably fail.

(Foolishly, I had a bit of a tantrum and uninstalled uTorrent so as to install BitComet but then realised that I couldn't download that anyway. I blame quitting smoking.)

Any ideas?

i went to download firefox for him

downloading its not there, the download screen just disapears
upon completion even though box isnt checked,

so i tried just to run it and it gets to point where window pops up
to install and click instal and window vanishes and nothing happens

ive check temp folders and cleared them ive tried system restore
set all internet options to default closed all virus programs,
no firewall up and still nothing
and it does this on everything thats downloaded or rather attempted

its funny because there is no errors that come up it just acts as though
nothing happened , created a folder for downloads and assigned everything to download to it and following downloads nothings there..

im wondering if the windows defender is a culprit here but i deleted it and still nothing, but maybe still remnants in registry or something

i hope that made sense and if any1 has any ideas please help

i ran online panda scan and nothing shows , aside from that i checked

Then same thing happens whenever I try to download things from my email too!

Certainly. Make sure all drivers are installed. And try getting Microsoft updates then downloading and installing other software.

The worst case scenerio would be : you had a bad stick of ram and windows installation was corrupt. However I think you will be able to solve this problem with windows updates.

Boxergirl I don't know HOW you are downloading Win10, but the best way to do it is using the Media Creation Tool:  Installing Windows 10 using the media creation tool - Windows Help With this tool, you have the option of (1) creating Win10 installation media (USB or DVD), (2) downloading an ISO file, (3) updating the PC directly.  What I recommend is getting an 8GB USB stick and using option (1) to create installation media, then inserting that media and running the Upgrade. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

I am having trouble downloading anything from any website whether it's through IE, Netscape or AT&T browser. When I go to any website to download, computer acts like it's downloading, but the end result is a large solid window, except for a small white square in the upper left hand corner of this large white window. Within that small white square there's a even smaller red square in it's left hand corner. Then below that is a blue triangle. Then to the right of those two small objects, there's a small black circle. I have searched and searched the internet for any explanations, but to no aval. Even AT&T couldn't explain it either when they tried to use their remote assistance to help me with downloading their software. I have taken a picture of this weird looking icon with my cell phone. If anyone out there would give me their cell phone # I'll send the picture to you. I have dug deep into IE's internet options, but don't see anything that should be blocking me from downloading. All options are checked that allows downloading. Please help!

I'm just going to copy and paste what I have posted everywhere:

-----------------------------

I recently installed WinXP. I had WinME before this, very few problems.
I formatted, installed WinXP, and everything is fine, except one thing. I
cannot downloading anything. for instance, I go to http://www.aim.com , and
I try to DL AOL Instant Messenger. The dialog may or may not pop up, and
when it does, I select a folder to download to, and the Time Remaining stays
blank, Transfer Rate is blank, and the Progress Bar does not move. The file
doesn't download. One of my friends told me something about having an NTFS
system instead of FAT32. I dont know if this will fix it, but if there is
something easier, I'll take that instead. I have RoadRunner Cable, I Obtain
IP and DNS addresses automatically, and am through a router. I have released
and renewed my IPs twice. I did not have this problem before WinXP came
along. I'm not a computer newbie, so I have tried all the menial things,
like Virus Scanners, Cookies, IE options, etc.. I would greatly appreciate
help please!

Thanks,
Ryan

I also took a screenshot of what happens:

I don't know whether this is an XP or an IE thing...

I inhereted this laptop at my company. I have full admin rights to it, btw.

This is kind of tough to explain. When I go to download certain types of programs - not files with a direct link to the file, but something that's supposed to run an installer on my machine - I don't get a prompt to download the software and the files don't start to download.

For example, go to http://download.sidestep.com/get/k00...&param=onlyGet

If you click I Agree, it should start to download a file. Except on my machine, it won't. I've had this same problem at other sites and it's becoming a major issue - I can't DL the webconferencing software we use, either.

I've gone into IE tools/Security/Custom Level and made sure that everything in ActiveX will download (or at least prompt me), but I don't get the pop-up box to download these types of programs. I've dropped my security levels to the bare minimums, but that didn't help either.

For what it's worth, the Sidestep site listed above gives me this error message:

I sometimes download programs that have icons that look like this:
 unknown_icon_download.bmp   3.06KB
16 downloads how can you download them on Xp it just says choose IE or select from list.

A:Trouble Downloading?

Hello,

The icon you see traditionally means that there is no application set to open the file in question. or that the file in question is corrupt. For example, downloading a microsoft word document and not having microsoft word instaled on the system. Could you say what the file is that you are downloading?

A:i am having trouble downloading

You may be infected with Poweliks or Xswkit (aka Gootkit, a Poweliks clone) which typically affects the ability to browse or download files using Internet Explorer and causes PowerShell error alerts. Task Manager typically shows numerous occurrences of (COM Surrogate) dllhost.exe or dllhst3g.exe. If using a 64-bit version of Windows, then these entries will be listed as dllhost.exe *32 or dllhst3g.exe *32. These processes are known to spawn and consume a large amount of system resources. When attempting to download files in Internet Explorer you may receive the message "Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded." or you may see a pop-up alert advising that "powershell (powershell.exe) has stopped working".If you are having trouble downloading files with Internet Explorer, follow these instructions to re-enable downloads/reset all Security zones to default.

Alright, so when I download a torrent persay, it usually downloads through limewire but i somehow messed around and messed it up. So now, it tries to download through itunes....how do I change it so that it downloads back through limewire?

A:Downloading music trouble

Two things:
First: there is no safe way to deal with P2P, and my firm is inundated with calls and computers everyday from people who don't believe me, and thought some free AV program on the web would help them.

Second: the likelihood of pirated data being passed over torrent or Limewire is about 100%, give or take, and I'll answer no question about them.

You have a simple file associations problem, but given the context, I can't condone the process, and won't be helping on this one.

Hi,

When i try to download a file from download.com with Star Downloader or any number of other download managers the software downloads the URL or link instead of the actual software file.

I can download the file with IE's download software but it times out when downloading large files (I am on dialup).

It seems like I always have trouble downloading from download.com--but somehow--filehippo seems to work (I can't figure out why this happens)

Can anybody offer any advice as to what I am doing wrong and are there any other good sites to download trail software from?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Yeto

A:Trouble Downloading From Download.com

Hi yeto, welcome to BC.In the lower left hand corner of download.com's website, click "Help Center" then click "downloading problems and Help". Your answer is there. (no dl managers allowed) Left a few sites below. Don't use dl managers myself and don't know if any of them prohibit thier use.As above, you can usually find that answer in the websites help section.Freeware FilesFreeware HomeFreeware World TeamPricelesswareSnapFilesTudogsWantdbestWebgrid

Hi - my browser (IE5) is malfunctioning since I tried to download and run Microsoft's lovely "Critical Security updates." The other day, my browser opened to one of MS's occasional security alert pages. Unfortunately, I decided to follow their suggestions and the install did not work right. Now, when I click a link within a Web page to open a new browser window, it does not work. It just freezes. I also am unable to click a link within an Outlook Express message and open a new browser window.

Another new problem: When I go to IE Help, I get this box: "Internet Explorer Script Error, Line 78, char 1, Error in loading dll, do you want to continue loading scripts on this page?" And Help does not work. Finally, one more change: I used to be able to type Control-F while on a Web page and the Find function box would pop open. Doesn't happen now.

When I first attempted to download the Microsoft security patch/update, I got a message saying I needed to first download IE 5.5, SP1. I had IE 5.05 at the time, which was working perfectly well. Wish I had left it alone! One more thing. When I used the IE Install Wizard after the IE5.5 SP1 download, I at first opted for the "minimal" install of browser only, without taking the new Outlook Explorer and Media Player. Did this screw things up? After having these problems, I ran IEsetup.exe a second time and opted for "typical install," including Outlook Explorer and Media Player but it... Read more

Try using 'Download Accelerator Plus' Its free to try. You obviously have a problem in windows but please try DAP 1st just to check if that can download anything. This should eliminate any doubt that your internet connection may be causing the problem. Then we can take it from there

I recently bought a program online and while going to down load it it starts up fine but about half way through it stops and says a problem has caused the program to stop working. I have tried using chrome, internet explorer! Firefox. I even tried the fire fox download manager called download them all but always the same thing. I have tried restarting my computer and internet, disabling my antivirus, going direct into my modem instead of wireless. But nothing, I'm freaking out that I may have wasted 200 bucks. I had a relative in another state who is pretty tech savy look into for me, he was able to download it on his computer with no problems and he tried to send me the zip file but I couldn't get that either

Hi All, I wanted to do an online virus scan but it appears that I cannot download the entire bundle of tools before the scan can start. I first tried F-Secure and everything seems to go well until the download is half done and that's as far as I get. It keeps disconnecting from the network and then reconnects and trys again until finally a message comes up stating that it cannot download the rest of the file and try again later. I have tried later many times but to no avail. I also tried this with Housecall and got the same results but it didn't disconnect from the network. I did have a trojan but my AVG 8 found it and I was able to get rid of it both in my files and in system restore. I sincerly hope someone can help me. I am running WindowsXP SP2 , Internet Explorer 7. It is an HP Pavilion a320n, 2800+, 1GB ram. It is over 5 years old. I have a high speed satilite connection. Thank you.

Here is my original problem in a nutshell. I am a beginner. I installed an old windows xp i had (2002). After installation i couldn't connect to the internet. I checked the drivers, and sure enough, they had a ? next to their name. I needed these drivers: ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, video controller. I have only 1 computer, so i thought i should try the ubuntu (linux) cd i had. I installed ubuntu, and now i have internet. I went to dell.com/support and tried downloading drivers. I get this "delldriverdownloadmanager.application", a plain text document, 9.3 kb in size (not the 3.3 mb size i expect). I don't think this is the correct driver application. I cannot open it in winzip. I don't know what i am doing wrong. Can i download these drivers using a linux OS? Any help would be appreciated.

A:Trouble downloading drivers

It looks like Dell is trying to make you use a download manager to download the drivers (why they do this I do not know), try looking for a direct download link, if you can't find one, you can try using a friend's computer to download the ethernet drivers.
