How can I find out if certain files/commands are Windows Legitimate commands, etc.?

Q: How can I find out if certain files/commands are Windows Legitimate commands, etc.?

Is there some place that I can search to see if windows files/commands are legitimate? I have Zone Alarm and it has programs on it trying to access the Internet that I do not recognize.
Examples: xpsplhtm.exe; OOBE\msoobe.exe; net.exe (System 32); self-extracting cabinets (Software Distribution Downloads)
Parentheses are where the files are according to Zone Alarm.

Another one was: Microsoft Out of Bounds.

Please help! I have Windows XP Home Edition with all updates. I have ZoneAlarm free and McAffee AntiVirus. Nothing has been detected.

Preferred Solution: How can I find out if certain files/commands are Windows Legitimate commands, etc.?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I use Fireworks 8 - should be similar in other versions

Drop down menu should offer option to reset standard Macromedia shortcuts to Photoshop shortcuts

I was wanting to setup a cmd or bat file to connect to a remote server and move whatever folders are there from the remote system to my system. I want to be able to use windows task manager to schedule it every morning at a certain time. Since the folder names are going to change, I cannot put a specific folder name on it. Is a cmd or bat file the best way to go or is there an easier way of doing it?

A:cmd or bat files for FTP commands?

For FTP, you can run the FTP command with the -s option to specify a text file with the FTP command in it.
runftp.bat contains ftp -s:c:\ftpcmds.txt

ftpcmds.txt contains something like:

Windows 10 has developed a critical error and, following the assessment of an expert technician, I have been advised to reinstall.   The process will remove all apps but preserve my files which are, in any event, backed up daily.   I am not sure if the reinstall will erase Outlook's pst files and I'm not sure if I included them in my daily backup routine.  I really don't want to risk losing all my archived emails.   I am, therefore, looking to find these files on my Dell Inspiron PC's hard drive and save them to an external hard drive before I initiate the Windows 10 reinstall.   I thought my PC's hard drive was partitioned into C and D drives only but when I enter the DOS window the default drive is X.   I have tried searching for files with *.pst extensions within these three drives using DOS dir or find commands but am unable to locate then.   I can't find the directories for Word or Excel files either, for that matter.    I assume they are hidden in some way.   Can anyone suggest a means of finding files stored anywhere on the hard drive in my PC, whether hidden or not, using only DOS commands?

You can use a shell command and run just about any exe program. Or you could use the winsock. If everyone is on the same subnet, you could use UDP or if not, then you can use TCP/IP. Microsoft web site shows all of the steps to do both.

I have a program here in the office that I use UDP since we are on the same subnet. I have it set that they put information into an access database, and rather me check it every day, I use the UDP which plays a wav on my computer to alert me that some on just submitted something into my database.

The example on Microsoft, shows a type of instant messanger, where one person types into a window on someone elses computer..

At this point I dont know if anything is even on the computer anymore it says no bootable device. I have been trying to figure this out for almost 2 months and have gotten no where. I tried to contact acer and they are not helpful at all, they basically told me to join the acer community and figure it out from there since my warranty expired the month before it stopped working. I've just set up the Belkin USB hub so I can connect my 500Gb media player / external HDD to the network without having to cart it back and forwards from the TV to the PC.
While the transfer rates are VERY low - (500k-2Mb per sec) it's still ideal for my needs.... with help.

I've got my favourite bittorrent downloader downloading to the main PC then transferring to the external HDD once completed.

What I want is to automate the moving of the downloaded files to the correct folder on the Media drive.

For example:

Check 'C:\downloads' every 5m and transfer any folders that contain .mp3 files to g:\music and any folders containing .avi to the 'g:\films' folder

I've tried the 'at' command in cmd but this wont recognise the G:\ drive as it's a virtual drive on the USB network hub.

Can someone point me at some software or windows commands that can help. Or (most likely) the correct syntax for referring to the virtaul USB drive on the network

Much appreciated.

One thing: having read a great many forums there are always a lot of 'why not just get a...' [insert new piece of hardware here]. Can we skip those please? I want a solution for the hardware that I've got. I know it can do everything that I want, I just don't know how.

Thanks very much

Some phantom (I made that name up) is executing Windows commands (I am using XP). When Windows Live Mail for the Desktop is open, the phantom inevitably closes the program within a half hour (whether I am actively using it or not). Other random commands are also being executed - yesterday a complete copy of a directory and all its subdirectories was made to another location on my hard drive. I lose control of the mouse and the keyboard when the phantom takes over. Esc doesn't work. Often I see the Windows Start function being executed. Sometimes I can use Alt shortcut keys to close a window that was opened by the phantom, but most of the time I cannot. Ctl-Alt-Del usually doesn't work when the phantom takes over, and when it does, I only see the performance screen; I am unable to click a tab to see other screens (such as Applications). Eventually I regain control of the keyboard and the mouse, but sometimes I just regain control of the Windows key and reboot.

I noticed this beginning when I was told by Microsoft that my Hotmail accounts in Outlook Express would need to be changed to look like other POP accounts, AND that they (Microsoft) recommended moving to Windows Live Mail for the Desktop as a replacement for Outlook Express, which I did. It was only after migrating to WLM that this began, but not right away (maybe a month later).

I have implemented McAffee Security Center and run AdAware, but neither has fixed this problem. I hope you can help me.

Found the solution on Search box in start menu does not work
This is the fix to be precise.

I ran into the same problem over the past couple days with Windows 7 RC and finally dug into it some more.
1. End Task on EXPLORER.EXE from Task Manager.

2. Start the Registry Editor

3. Look for the following key:

4. Rename the key so it looks like the following:

5. From Task Manager click on File | New Task (Run) and type EXPLORER.EXE and hit return.

6. Now try your search from the Start Menu again.

If the above process doesn't work for you, you can always put it back the way it was by reversing the process above.

Hi folks!

I have had no luck getting Windows 10 Pro to shut down properly. I?ve tried every reported solution on every thread I?ve found, with no success. Perhaps you could help? Is there a way to get a log file of what goes on during shutdown?

Intel i7 3770-k
Asus p8z77-v le plus
2x GTX 680
Samsung 830 SSD
Seagate 3TB HDD
Seagate 350GB HDD
5+1 USB2 PCI card
1200W PSU
Dual boot Windows 10 / Linux Mint 17.3

Restart is slow, but succeeds eventually.
Shutdown plays ?Shutting down? screen, screens go black, displays give the ?no signal? prompt, but MBD, GPU, and case fans remain powered (Hard drives can be heard spinning down).

Oddity: If I hard power off and boot up in Linux Mint, the OS reports that Windows is hibernated and refuses to mount NTFS partitions. This remains the case even AFTER I turn off hibernation; however rebooting and booting Linux instead of Win10 gives no such issue. Mint performs shutdown quickly and completely, which suggests to me that it?s not a hardware issue.

Here?s a history of what I?ve tried so far. At each bullet point I tried standard shutdown, holding shift while clicking shutdown in the Win+X menu, and using the command line (shutdown ?f ?t 0).

- Issue first observed after upgrade form Win7, assumed to be upgrade issue.
- Erased SSD, reinstalled Windows 10 from USB drive (made with Microsoft Media Creation Tool), installed latest drivers from Asus / NVIDA.
- chckdsk /f on all NTFS partitions. All pass.

Hello Bret, Welcome to TSF!

By the sound of it, you still have fragments of that infection left on your computer.

Please read this article? "Having problems with spyware and pop-ups? - First Steps"; follow the instructions very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information; as instructed, in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum.
(Simply, click on the coloured links to be re-directed.)

Please ensure that you create a new thread in the HiJackThis Log Help Forum; not back here in this one.
(Please change the new Thread Subscription to ?Instant Email Notification? so that you receive an email as soon as a reply is posted,)

When carrying out The 5 Steps, if you cannot complete any of them for whatever reason, just continue on with the next one until they are all completed.
However,it is extremely important to make mention of the fact that you could not complete any of the steps in your post to The HJT Help Forum; where an Analyst will assist you with other workarounds.

Once done, please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will answer your request as soon as they can.

Good Luck with it.

Hi there
Not sure how you got the problem -- Ubuntu / Debian / Linux Mint (all similar) have very easy graphical installs - however for help on installing Ubuntu I'd suggest you put your question over at LinuxQuestions.org

If you need help on "Unhosing a system" then by all means pose your question here.

The easiest way is to use the Windows recovery disk to repair MBR / boot - but you need to be careful if you are using a GPT drive and UEFI boot. You need to provifr more info as to EXACTLY what you want to do --I'm not sure what your current problem is.

We have been working with a developer to adapt a desktop application for our own use. The application is written in Delphi.
Among other things, the application can initialize USB devices using the standard Windows format command and then load data to it.
When attempting to format multiple devices concurrently (say 4 or more - up to 16 even), we discovered that both the application and Windows would become non-responsive to the point that you could not cancel the app via Task Manager or even shut down the

But this would only happen on some
of our computers. The problem does not occur on computers running Windows 10 (so far) and I also have a smaller Windows 7 Home Premium computer where the problem does not occur.

Here are the computers where the problem is easily recreated:
1) Windows 7 Professional, i5-6400, 2.70 Ghz, 16GB RAM, tower
2) Windows 7 Professional, i7-6700K, 4.00 Ghz, 32GB RAM, tower
3) Windows 8.1 Professional, i5-5200U, 2.20 Ghz, 8GB RAM, laptop

The problem seems to be isolated to concurrent format commands. When it happens, you can see from the command prompt windows that the format command launches that the format command actually completes successfully, but the command prompt window never closes
(and you cannot close it manually either).
I was able to recreate the problem outside of the application removing it from the equation altogether. I created the following BAT file. If I execute it on any of the above listed compute... Read more

Hello everyone,

I'm having difficulties running commands using cmd.exe while logged in as my user. My command prompt opens correctly but I cannot enter various commands (ping or ipconfig will not work, for example) ; meanwhile, if I launch the command prompt as Administrator, it works just fine !

I have seen a few posts in this forum talking about this problem, and tried the solutions provided here : http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/solved-windows-7-command-prompt-cmd-exe-inop-458857.html
But it didn't work (I did almost everything, but haven't been able to replace the cmd.exe file in SysWOW64).

I also have another command prompt installed (provided with the Ruby on Rails Framework for web development), but both used to work just fine so the problem isn't there !

And now my configuration : Windows 7 64bits family edition with SP1 installed.

Any idea ?

A:Windows 7 SP1 Command prompt not accepting usual commands

Hi, by design windows Vista, Seven and Eight require that (most) cmd 's be run from an elevated cmd prompt. This means you need to open cmd as administrator, normally go to start search and type cmd, right click on the returned cmd.exe and select "run as administrator". Even if you are logged in with an administrator account, this is necessary.

You can pin cmd.exe to the start menu, right click the shortcut, select properties then advanced, and check the box "run as administrator", from then on it opens as administrator.

It sounds like something went horribly wrong with your Windows system files or registry. Have you used any registry cleaning tools on this system?

You may also try Disk Check with both boxes checked for all HDDs and with Automatically fix file system errors checked for all SSDs. Post back your logs for the checks after finding them using Check Disk (chkdsk) - Read Event Viewer Log. It is possible you have hard disk errors causing the problems.

Also, have you tried to use System Restore OPTION TWO to revert to an old restore point?

Upon reviewing my update history, I now find that I had received this same notice from Microsoft on June 14, 2005, June 10, 2005 and May 30, 2005. I am embarrassed to write that I failed to check my update history prior to installing and so have apparently "successfully" installed this update three prior times. Did I in fact install the exact same update three times, or is this a modification of KB-828026 and so should once again install as being urged by Microsoft?

i need to format a hard drive in dos.. how do i do this?

A:DOS Commands

If it is a new drive and never been formatted, first you would need to run fdisk and partition the drive. The command is fdisk c: or what ever the drive letter hapens to be. Then when that is done, to farmat the drive type format c: (or the drive letter if different) and hit enter.

Okay, I am not sure where to post this. Is anyone familiar with MedQuest...medical transcribing?
Well, they use WordPerfect, and their own stuff to. My question is this. My friend does this, and their is a part where she is to do a 'runlog' command. It runs in DOS. This process should only take a few seconds, but hers drags on. Is runlog a WordPerfect command. The tech guy she is talking to said to do a write command. That too, hung. Doesn't that open the text editor? She had recently upgrades to W98. He is telling her to reconfigure her hard drive. But, I told her that is drastic...typical tech support solutions. I am trying to isolate what these commands are, and what would be a better path to take. If they are related to WordPerfcet, could a reinstall of that help. When I do a 'write' command on my machine, it opens WordPad. Anything I can do to fix this?

Hey all, just made another topic which is relevant to this topic.

I downloaded Vista from MSDNAA, the software Microsft supplied to download and unpack products your down from isn't working what so ever.

The format of the file for the operating system you download is ".SDC" which then the software decrypts and unpacks into ".ISO". the software is constantly stuck on the CRC check and i have left it for 24 hours + and still hasnt moved 1 bar. I have found a program online that has to be executed via Command prompt.

Here is the link (http://imagi.pl/?p=7) to the website; i jus need help in finding what commands i need to use to use this program properly. I can load the program but have no idea in how to use it to unpack the file.

Please could someone give me the right guidelines to sort this out, be a life saver.

A:CMD commands

The program runs from the cmd line. If you type the name of the program at a cmd prompt it will show you the help and syntax on how to use the program.

what is procedure and commands to wipe all data from harddrive? the currently installed os is windows 2000. its so badly infected with trojans( thanks kids!) that i am going to start anew and put better access limits on it.(take that guys). already have downloaded all data i want to keep and will be scanning it( before installing) with avast and other goodies i've downloaded.

What OS will you be installing on the formatted drive?

If it's XP, you just put in the CD and reboot. The XP install will come up and one of the options will be to wipe the current partition and reinstall Windows. If you're reinstalling 2000, I'm not sure what the procedure is as I've never used it before, although I would guess that it'd be similar to XP.

just a few questions.. how do you make visual basic copy a file??? cuz i wanna make it so when you click on a command button, it copys a file to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM and copies the original file to C:\ and runs an external program. please help

A:VB commands

Ok, here is an example:

Private Sub Command1_Click()
'Copy the original from \Windows\System32
FileCopy "c:\windows\system32\MyFile.txt" "c:\MyFile.txt"
'Copy new version
FileCopy "c:\MyFolder\MyFile.txt" "c:\windows\system32\MyFile.txt"
'Run the executable
Shell "c:\MyFolder\MyApplication.exe",vbNormalFocus
End Sub

This uses the standard FileCopy command in VB to perform the copies and then the shell function to run the executable.

Hope this helps.
