A485 Shipping issues

Q: A485 Shipping issues

Hi all,I purchased an A485 on the 10th of this month. It's continuously been delayed and I don't seem to be getting anywhere with it. All i ever get told is 'my irder is in process' or there is a parts delay. I understand that sometimes parts delays can halt an order for weeks if not months. Was just wondering if anyone else had ordered this and was having similar issues? OPLEaDER

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, It seems that this latest BIOS version (1.02) is causing a few different performance issues for the ThinkPad A485. Once obtaining my A485 I ran some synthetic benchmarks to judge CPU performance. After updating to the latest BIOS, I have noticed a decrease in performance on the order of about 10%. It seems that this BIOS update has allowed the CPU to exhibit more stable performance and CPU throttling behavior under constant load, e.g. as seen in the updates to this article: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-A485-Ryzen-5-Pro-Laptop-Review.334528.0.html but at the cost of some overall performance. Adding to this, after having owned a ThinkPad A485 with a Ryzen 5 2500u and one with a Ryzen 7 2700u, it seems as though Lenovo's power management is aggressively holding back the Vega 10 GPU in the Ryzen 7 2700u, as opposed to the Vega 8 GPU in the Ryzen 5 2500u. Previously, in CineBench R15 (https://www.maxon.net/en/products/cinebench/) benchmarks, my A485 with the 2500u would achieve ~37fps during testing, while hardware monitoring software would show that the GPU was achieving a clock speed of about 800mhz. With my new A485 that has the Vega 10 GPU, it is impossible to achieve more than ~25fps under the same test and testing conditions and the hardware monitoring software shows that the GPU can not reach a clock speed higher than what I believe to be the near-base clock of 400mhz. With both laptops, this testing was performed with the Windows po... Read more

The Ryzen Pros in the A485 are qualified for ECC support. Can Lenovo enable this support in a BIOS update? 16GB ECC SODIMMs (Lenovo # 4X70Q27989) are recognised by the system but there's no option in the BIOS to enable ECC.

My client has recently bought four A485s instead of their normal E480 laptops to give AMD another go. I'm really starting to regret it as all four seem to be suffering from Wi-Fi drop outs. I work remotely from client so what I normally do is carry out the intial Windows configuration onsite and then install SimpleHelp remote support - I then carry out the rest of the configuration remotely using SimpleHelp. It works well and once I establish a remote sesssion, it rarely (like never) drops. I've currently got two E480s and two A485 left on a desk at the office on the same Wi-Fi. I've been going through a very similar configuration process with all four - add to Azure AD, install Office 2016, set-up printers etc. The E480's are responding perfectly (no drops) but the A485's keep stopping responding to the remote support session and occasionally SimpleHelp reports the connection has dropped - it then re-connects a few seconds later and reports "N drops". So far the E480s have not dropped at all (I've been connected about an hour) but the A485's have racked up about 15 drops between themselves. They don't do this all the time. You can got for 10/15 minutes when they respond perfectly. My client's internet connection is excellent - 1Gbps backbone with AC Wi-Fi so we're getting >100Mbps both ways, often >200Mbps. I've checked the system event log and there are some e... The new official graphics drivers for the A485 (7/11) exhibit the same resolution bug as unofficial sideloaded drivers. This is not seen in the previous graphics driver (6/8) and needs to be fixed. The problem is that it locks the resolution of certain games to 1080p, as this becomes the only recognisable resolution for the display - as seen by Custom Resolution Utility showing only 1080p at 60hz and 48hz. Adding 1280x720, as it is the only playable resolution for most games anyway, results in a blackscreen when using it.This entirely breaks games like Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age, causing a white screen crash, and locks 1080p to at least Distance and Far Cry 3 from my testing.

So there is no subforum for the A series Thinkpads (AMD processors), so since this is the "current" T series (and they're mostly the same except which processor they use) I'll post here. I have a A485 w/ the Ryzen Pro 2500u.  Overall it's fast, efficient, and works really well.  But it NEVER stops draining the batteries.  As soon as I turn it off it continues to drain.  The only way to prevent it is to remove BOTH batteries every time I shut down, which of course is difficult since the second battery requires a screwdriver to unplug it, and it's not quick to do so.  It's been annoying me more and more because while I love the performance of the machine, I can't actually trust it to take it ANYWHERE since the first battery will be dead in 4 days and both batteries will be dead in about 10 of just setting fully powered off.  I've checked firmware and usb power share is disabled.  I've even tried installing Debian and Arch linux to see if it's hardware or Windows, no difference, so it's definitely the laptop, not the OS.  I know several other models had this issue due to firmware issues, but I have the latest firmware avaialble and it's still happening, if anything it got worse with the 1.16 firmware. Is this something I need to open a service ticket for, or is this a firmware issue that will be corrected with a future (hopefully soon) release?  I'd really like to be able to use my laptop off a dock!!

The TrackPoint buttons on my A485 are behaving oddly. The Left button is acting as a simultaneous left+right click (clicking opens up context menu, but I'm still able to drag windows around, etc.). Right and Middle buttons are not functional at all. It seems to be a hardware issue as it persists across Windows 10 and Linux (I've tested in Arch and Ubuntu). Are there any solutions for this, or should I send it in for warranty?

I just updated the Bios on my machine hoping for the performance to start going further to becoming at least on par with the E485/E585, but to my horror, it now throttles even worse! What used to be a stable 2.5Ghz on the CPU during a Cinebench run on high performance mode, resulting in an underwhelming but acceptable 530-560cb is now 2.0Ghz! This barely puts it in the 450-480cb range, which is almost as bad as quiet mode on the previous bios. This is completely unacceptable. If the E485/E585 can get 600cb consistently, so can the A485. The cooling isn't the problem, just stop limitting the laptop and let it get a little louder/hotter so we can get the performance we have been advertised! 70 degrees is _not_ a suitable temp limit in high performance mode. Please try and fix this. This could be the best Ryzen laptop around, but right now, you're just a fool for buying this over the E485. Here's a look at my findings https://imgur.com/a/qXJS2Bs

I noticed and issue with the ThinkPad A485 (AMD Ryzen) and DisplayPort audio. If using either the Lenovo Pro dock or the Lenovo USB-C dock, I'm unable to get sound to come through my Acer B247Y 24" monitors using a DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable. The monitors have built-in speakers. It seems Windows 10 thinks it's sending the audio through to the monitors, but nothing comes out. Connecting the HDMI port on the side of the A485 to HDMI on the monitor will produce sound. Using a DisplayPort to female HDMI adapter from the back of either docking station and then connecting an HDMI cable to the adapter and then to HDMI on the monitor will also produce sound. There are no settings on the monitor that seem to do anything for it. I can select the Acer AMD High Definition Audio source in Sound Properties and the little equalizer meter moves when you right-click "Test sound", just no audio comes out using DisplayPort to DisplayPort. I'm not sure if this is an issue with USB-C and DP Alt-Mode which the A485 uses for either the Pro dock or USB-C dock. This does not seem to be an issue with an Intel-based machines using USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 or just Intel and DisplayPort audio. Other testing I've done.1. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer monitor with the Pro dock and the Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock using a ThinkPad T480. DisplayPort to HDMI will also produce sound.2. DisplayPort to DisplayPort does produce sound through the Acer mo... Can we please have confirmation that the A485 will be supported for BIOS updates via Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS)?According to the website https://fwupd.org/lvfs/devicelist I can see that fairly new Thinkpads like the P52/P72 are already supported. I do not mind waiting (within reasonable time frame) for Lenovo to fix the BIOS issues but at least I would like to be able to update my system without relying on Windows. Can we please have an update on anything revolving this machine? Is LVFS support coming or not? Is a BIOS update planned fairly soon so that I can stick with Windows for a bit longer? Please shed some light on the situation. A simple yes is coming or no is not will suffice so that we can all move on... Thank you.

Hi,

I can't answer your immediate question, but I'm posting to make sure you know there's a way to get there. Perhaps you're already aware but others may not be...

It still requires Windows, but that could be in a VM if you don't have a Win box handy.  The Windows update exe includes a tool to make a bootable flash drive.  Instructions in the readme.

If something is not done soon, I will be returning this A485. Performance on the Ryzen chips are amazing when they aren't being throttled to death by whatever Lenovo has done to the power management on these machines. It seems like the issue has been resolved on the E485, but still persists on the "professional" A485. I'm currently getting around 350-400 in Cinebench r15, which is just garbage even compared to the E485 which routinely hits a score of 600 up to 650 in some cases. Fresh install, only updates. The GPU also routinely downclocks to 400Mhz from around 1000Mhz, which makes graphical apps very laggy. Lenovo, these machines are capable of being so much faster, stop mucking around with the power management and unlock it all.  This issue has been assessed in excruciating detail by other customers. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Thinkpad-A485-Bios-1-05-worsens-throttli... https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T400-T500-and-newer-T/Bios-Issues-with-Thinkpad-A485/td-p/4292... And even has driven some diehard people to mod their firmware in an attempt to fix the issue (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iu9WZVLCAVg). I won't be doing this, I'll simply go elsewhere.

Lowering the resolution doesn't seem to correct the issue. I've also tested on a [email protected] 4:4:4rgb 6bit display and the issue percsists.

Hi, I am pretty new to this forum so I'm not sure whether I'm correct here, I just hope it is.My device is a Thinkpad A485 with the Ryzen Pro 2500U.I am using Linux (Debian to be precise) on this machine btw, to defuse some confusion that could come up, using the mainline kernel 5.1.0-rc2+ (master from torvalds master branch), but these issues are also occuring on the kernel supplied by Debian which is 4.19.0-4-amd64. The issue in detail I am experiencing is:When I cold boot the laptop without a USB device attached, the USB ports won't give any power until the power supply is plugged into one of the USB-C Ports. When I connect a USB device to one of the USB ports, it doesn't do anything, until I plug in the power supply, but when removing the power supply again, the device remains powered. This is not happening, when the USB device is plugged in while the device is turned off or while it is in the bootup process. Also ethernet seems to be affected by this as the same issue is occuring with the ethernet port on the right side.Is this a know issue? I did not test this on Windows 10 though.I doubt that this is a hardware issue as the devices keep getting powered when the power supply is removed until I plug them out.I wonder whether other people also have this problem.

A blue screen error (also called a stop error) can occur if a problem causes your PC to shut down or restart unexpectedly. When you experience this type of error, you won?t be able to see things like the Start menu or the taskbar on the screen when your PC is turned on. Instead you might see a blue screen with a message that your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart.

I've had good luck with HP computers, and recently ordered a new EliteDesk. The problem is, I paid a premium for next-day delivery. The unit was shipped from Texas (to Northern California) on May 25th. It is now May 31st, and I don't have it yet. FedEx dropped the ball and failed to deliver it today, and they say I'll have it tomorrow -- but in the course of my discussion with them, they said it was shipped GROUND. Because it was shipped ground, I am certainly entitled to a refund on the premium shipping charge that was billed to my credit card. But here's the real problem: As far as I can tell, there is NO page on the HP website that provides a phone number I can use to call and complain about this. I have looked and looked and looked. I would love it if some kind person would provide a customer support phone number so I can call and explain the problem to them. Or even a URL of the web page that has a phone number. I do quite understand that large corporations don't want to hear from customers after they have made a sale ... but in this case, if I don't get a commitment from HP to rescind the charge for next-day shipping, I'll have to have my Visa cancel the entire payment for the computer, and then where will we be? It will be a headache for everybody. So how about a phone number, eh?

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details). If you are unfamiliar with how the Forum's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

I am building a new Haswell PC here on the right coast of the US, and need to ship it to the owner on the left coast - built, tested, and loaded.

Has anyone done this and have any tips to try and get it to it's destination in working condition?

The owner is fairly mechanically inclined, but has never worked inside a PC before, so I am wary of what I can ask her to do.
My main concern is we are considering a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO, and I am concerned about the height of this thing creating enough leverage to tear the socket out if there was a jolt. I've considered removing it and then trying to walk her through installing it at her end but I'm not sure this is the best plan.
Or we could just stick with the stock heatsink and fan and not deal with the EVO.

Any experiences and tips would be appreciated!

Well if it was me I would get bunch of static free bubble wrap and stuff the inside of case so things don't move then wrap outside of case put in box then get bigger box and put more wrap between the two boxes. That should protect everything then make sure you put insurance on it for a value twice the amount of the package. Forgot to say to mark the box this side up so motherboard is on bottom of box.
