IE Shortcut added using GP update does not save the users local IE settings

Q: IE Shortcut added using GP update does not save the users local IE settings

Our organization is looking to add a IE Shortcut to all of our users via group policy update. We can add the shortcut with no issues, but when you use the shortcut it does not have the favorites bar and toolbar. Even though the local user has all
of this setup in IE already.
Is this by design, or is there a way we can have all the settings show on the new shortcut?
Version: IE11

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Whenever I made any changes in Local Interenet Security settings e.g if I change the status of "Download signed ActiveX controls" from "prompt" to "enable" and save it. Upon re-openning the IE the settings are reverted back to prompt. I already did the On-line Scan by Eset, but it find nothing malicious.

Kindly note that I'm using Windows XP Pro SP3 with IE6. And I can't upgrade IE 6 to 7 or 8 versions because I am using the software that requires IE6 to access the machine for configuration and installation.

I already tried to reset the IE settings but the problem remains.

A:[SOLVED] Windows Won't Save My Settings, Doesn't Update Self

Hello Wali Abro, Welcome to TSF!

Part of your problem could be the lack of RAM and the fact that you have a few browsers installed.

Browsers: IE7, FireFox, Safari 3.0.3 BETA

Anti-Virus: No,

...this is very and foolish indeed.

Internet Connection: 256K (IP Shared By 8 People)

These last two items certainly will not help you have trouble free Internet 'surfing' without the possibility of major threats from spyware or malware.

First thing to do is install a good anti virus program, because not having one and 'surfing' the Internet is like leaving your wallet in a public place with a note on it saying "Help yourself!!".

Which of course is very unwise indeed, and could be the cause of your issues here.

Having said that I recommend that you have a good look at this...

A Guide to the Installation and use of AVG? FREE Anti-Virus.

Once you have read the instructions given in the Installation Guide, you should download the
AVG? Anti Virus Free Edition program, and install it using the instructions given in the Installation Guide above.

When you have the program fully installed and operational, I strongly urge you to run a full system scan using AVG? Anti Virus Free Edition. ... Read more

After forgetting the local administrator password, I followed that guide for offline editing the SAM registry file. This clearly caused a problem, because no I see no users in LUAG as per the attached. All the accounts work fine, except the built-in administrator account which I can't do anything with (if I try to enable it using the 'net user' command, net crashes).

I suspect I may just have to live with this, but does anyone have any suggestions about how to 'clean' the administrator account in the registry so that LUAG works again?

A:No users visible in Local Users and Groups

Check your Windows version!

If you have the Windows 10 Home edition, then it will not have Local Users and Groups (lusrmgr.msc) included in it. It's only available in the Pro and Enterprise editions instead.

What command(s) you use to activate the Administrator?

I am looking to setup a system (through windows or 3rd party software) that automatically creates a shortcut, in a specified folder, every time a new file/folder is added to a specific folder or sets of folders.

For example consider the download folder for a Torrent application. All torrents downloaded go into this folder. Since the files cannot be moved around without having to reload them in order to get them to seed, organization of this folder becomes tough. However if all files downloaded (technically it would be all files placed) into this folder were automatically sent to a different folder as a shortcut, this would make the organization far easier.

Any suggestions? THANKS!

A:Looking to create shortcut automatically for all files added to folder

Combo solution.
NirCmd - Windows command line tool

Setup Directory Monitor to monitor particular folder and execute THE SCRIPT(see code below). Directory Monitor has to run as administrator in order to start the script as adminustrator.

Setup NirCmd in a specific folder. In that folder place the bat script:
%~dp0nircmd.exe shortcut "%~1" "C:\targetFOLDER\" "%~n1"
Here is how this should work:
Direcory Monitor monitors Inpunt folder, sees the new file, passes it's name to the script, script starts NirCmd, which creates a file shortcut in targetFolder.

That is the only solution I can think of at the moment.

As the heading says. Reinstall has added users.

I had problems with my anti virus that the help desk said required a Windows repair. I did this but now all my setting etc have disappeared.
What I can see is that when I look at 'Documents and settings' there are extra users directories.
These are:

All Users
All Users.Windows
Defaults Users
Default Users.Windows
I now have 3 Network Services NT
I also have two directories of me.

I can delete them using explorer. Can anyone tell me how I get my PC back to the original state?

I set up a local user account on a company laptop that was to be used for employees who needed a lap top temporarily. I later added the laptop to the domain so that users could also use their company credentials. However after putting the computer on the domain, the local guest user account doesn't work. I went in as an admin and played with the account, it is still there and nothing has been disabled. When logging in I insert the computer-name/guest and it claims the password or domain is wrong? I just set the password and the local computer domain name is right here in front of me nothing has been inserted wrong. Is this an issue that need's to be addressed in group policy (which I need to go to someone else for) or can I solve this on the local machine? Microsoft really needs to patch these domain issues or they need to give Windows Seven log in options the flexibility XP had. Just saying

I am completely at my wits end. I have been battling some hellish malware for months now. I have done just about everything I can think of, from using crazy passwords, changing the obvious settings prone to weakness, uncheck Remote access, disable built in admin, disabling shares, strict firewall settings, different firewalls, different AV software, just about everything really, anti-spyware. I have used about every advanced malware discovery out there to no avail, from tdsskiller, combofix, Reanimator, ansMBR, etc.. All come up blank.

The obvious normal signs of something being infected are there. Sudden dropping of firewall, suddenly being denied access to areas, finding services running that should be disabled, noting my av software isn't working properly. Lots of instances of svchost running, far more than reasonable, with the wrong PID, access level. Auditing in cmd environment and seeing unknown open ports, foreign addresses, not accountable to any legitimate service, etc.

To make matters worse, when I actively try to make changes preventing access, I find my own account changed, anything from my search function disabled to all admin tool (mmc) locked out. Piling on, this infection is not only nasty, it's aggressive, it won't hesitate to actually remove my account from all groups, basically locking me out of my own computer. Add to this a particular intelligence, and it's any computer users worst nightmare.

A:What jumper settings for added drive?

The first hard drive (80GB) and the CD drive are jumpered correctly. If you only have one device connected to each of the two IDE controllers on the motherboard, each may be set to master or cable select (if supported by mobo). For SATA drives it is not necessary to change any jumper settings from the original default positions for desktop applications. One SATA drive per motherboard SATA connector. Master and slave does not really apply to SATA drives (hard drives or optical drives).

Of course, before you can use the newest SATA hard drive, it must be formatted first. Go to Disk Management and see if it is recognized there. If so, go ahead and format it from there and then you should be good to go. This is Windows XP, correct?

To get to Disk Management: Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management.

question... i seem to have a bunch of crap in this folder that always brings the trojan in and hides it with files that have come from popups... can i delete everything in this folder and not cause problems for my computer

A:C:\Documents and Settings\-------\Local Settings\Temp

Hi futrade

Yes, you can delete everything in the Temp folder.

The best time to empty the Temp folder is right after a reboot, some programs place files in the Temp folder and will deny the deletion since the file is currently being used.

If you want, you can send the items to the Recycle Bin for a few days, if something seems to be running differently after emptying the Temp folder, you can restore the items from the Recycle Bin.

If any of the files in the Temp folder is a virus or trojan, obviously, you would not to keep those hanging around, so run a couple virus scans, links below.

To help clean up your system:
Run an online Anti-Virus scan from at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites

Trendmicro HouseCall
Allow them to clean/delete any spyware/malware or viruses/trojans they may find.
Make a note of any files flagged that were unable to be cleaned or deleted.

Download, Install and check each of the following Spyware tools for updates:
(If you already have the following, please make sure it is the latest version and has been updated)
Ad-Aware SE 1.06:
Click on Full System Scan and deselect Search for negligible risk entries. Have Ad-Aware SE remove what it finds.
Spybot-S&D 1.4:
Have it fix what it finds marked in Red.

A:Is it OK if i added Google public DNS settings to my connections?

I also use Google's DNS server, as my ISP's DNS servers have intermittent issues. Another choice is OpenDNS and I believe Norton has implemented a three-level tiered approach with DNS servers that make an attempt in securing your internet browsing by blocking some questionable sites. I think they range from basic security that is the least restrictive, to a high-level security which is the most restrictive. I've yet to play around with Norton's DNS servers, but I plan to when I have time.

Hi guys!

Simple question: why does a shortcut to an exe on a network-drive display differently from one on my local drive?

It's the same file, but the network ressource version looks FUBAR, while local version is pretty nice.

Perhaps more to the point: any hints on changing it. The particular exe is compiled with an ico containing: 48x48 px, 32x32 px, 16x16 px (all in xp, hicolor, 16 colors). It looks like windows is displaying the 16x16 px version, and then resizing it, and perhaps adding a dash of ugly.

Hi all
I am wondering if it is possible to prevent users from creating shortcuts. We have users locked down were they cannot get to the local C: Drive to prevent the machine from getting messed up. But they are creating shortcuts that allow them to browse Active
Directory. "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dsquery.dll,OpenQueryWindow" And while I cannot prevent them from reading AD, I want to prevent them from getting to the rundll32.exe file. At this point, they are creating shortcuts to get there. These
users cannot change anything in AD, I am just trying to prevent them from browsing it.
I would block the rundll32.exe file from being executed but with all the software we have, I am not sure what all it would break. Is it possible to prevent running specific rundll32 dll files?
Any advice in this matter would be great.

I have been to Windows Menu\ Word Options \ Customise \ Keyboard Shortcuts; customise \ Office Menu, and the funny thing is, filesave is defined as having ctrl + s as a shortcut, whereas filesaveas has f12 defined as its shortcut. I would have thought, therefore, that logically ctrl + s would just save the document but I get save as. This is strange to me. In addition ctrl + s does just save my Excel 2007 documents.

Or... are workspace extensions are my only option?

Hi guys,
A problem that is plaguing an office where I work at. This OCE Commercial style scanner was installed before I get on board with my team here and they setup shortcuts on a network share to access the FTP'd directory for their digital scans thru windows explorer
Only 1 Windows 7 machine out of 15 is NOT connecting it keeps trying to launch internext explorer instead of indexing into the FTP with windows explorer.
All settings have been checked and they are identical machines built from the same image, on the same OEM workstations.
I even tried turning off passive FTP mode in internet options on the 1 computer that isnt working and that didnt help even though all the others have passive mode ON and can still connect directly thru windows explorer.
Easy thing would be for the employee to just "deal with it" theres no reason why clicking the files from ie (when it prompts for download) couldnt be saved to the Hard drive that way, but i still am curious why this is happening on identical damn machines.
ETA: I am not sure if networking was a better place for this post although all other machines ARE working properly and even an windows xp machine has zero problems connecting to this FTP'd directory. It has to be windows 7 issue causing this problem.
Thanks for any insight,

Ok guys, turns out this is in fact a windows 7 problem.
As i investigated online I was told to add certain keys to the registry. I am EXTREMELEY weary of doing things of this nature (and knowing that several other PC's worked) so I decided to simply compare the two registries for any inconsistencies and lo and behold there was an entire Key missing from the registry named "FTP" in the HK_CLASS_ROOT section of the registry. Do not hesitate to create a .reg with this information if your "FTP" key is missing and you do not have a working registry from an identical computer to compare with:
Open notepad and copy/paste/save the below registry fix as "Regfix.reg"
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
 @="URL:File Transfer Protocol"
 "Source Filter"="{E436EBB6-524F-11CE-9F53-0020AF0BA770}"
 "URL Protocol"=""

I have created a shortcut, on a sub-menu of the Start-menu, to an URL
When I edit the shortcut properties (Description or Notes) and use "Apply" or "OK" button I get this "Apply Property Error"

I would like to display some info in the "Comment" field (normally available for file shortcuts)
When I hover over the URL-shortcut all the popup shows is the URL address

Would appreciate any help, thank you

Trying to get full administrator in Win 8. Following the instructions.... right click computer, left click manage. In system tools there should be 'local users and groups' option but this is missing?
Any ideas please?

A:Win 8 'local users and groups'.

Hi Talent
The Users and Groups feature isn't available in the standard version of Windows 8/8.1, you need the Professional version to access it. Here:http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_8-security/local-users-and-groups-is-missing-in-computer/d0fa2023-a40b-4833-abaf-7e2e39a4d34d
