I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So I recently upgraded to an SSD, I moved the Location of the Documents folder to my HDD, now when I play games it stores files, where they should normally be in the Documents Folder, in the E:\ drive rather than E:\Documents.

My "Document Properties" look like this:

So shouldn't those folders be going to the Documents folder? They already exist in that folder but are from before I transitioned to an SSD.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Windows storing "Documents" folders in wrong place

It looks like you moved the Libraries pointer to Documents and not the actual Documents folder which is under

C:\Users\xxxxxxxx\Documents

I have Windows XP SP2.
A couple of days ago I was changing the folder types (from Documents to Pictures) for numerous subfolders in the "My Pictures" folder.
Somehow this caused many of the other directories/folders (C:, Program Files, Windows, etc.) to start using the "Picture Tasks" panel ("View as a slide show", "Order prints online", "Print pictures") on the left side of the screen, instead of the default panel for that directory/folder.
Does someone know how to recover the default panels by a registry change? (I don't use System Restore)

I had this same problem to reoccur recently.
I finally found the answer by searching the "Windows XP General" newsgroup.
The solution is here:

Sounds like your client may have used a program to modify/change the link arrow on shortcut icons, or followed Brink's tutorial here: Shortcut Arrow - Change, Remove, or Restore

Hello ecc83, and Welcome to TSF!

Going by what you have said, I'd honestly say that the keyboard needs to be pensioned off and replaced with a new one....simply becausethey don't last forever.
Keyboards today are not an expensive piece of equipment, you ought to be able to get one for not more than say ?6.00 [for a basic Windows? keyboard], at your local computer parts store.

By the way, I use Alt+156 to make the ? sign.

Hi everyone, my laptop's keyboard recently started behaving oddly, e.g. when I try to type the letter 'p' a '*' appears. Same also true for the '/' key, when I press it a '+' appears.

This is probably something very simple, but I can't figure out what I've done. Numlock is off, stick keys are off and the language is set to my own. I'm using Windows 7 and it's a Sony Vaio laptop.

Many thanks in advance 😊

A:Keyboard on Sony Vaio laptop types the wrong symbol/letter etc.

Hold down the FN key and press Numlock key.
If this just started happening, then do a system restore to a time before this happened. You can also use an external USB Keyboard or the on screen keyboard and see if that has the same effect,
You can also go to the Sony Vaio drivers page Sony eSupport - Drivers & Software Updates - Select a Model and download the updated Touchpad and Chipset driver for your model.

A:may be in the wrong place

The monitor you have now, as the old monitor you had, should have some buttons or knobs on the front of it. These are used to resize the image, adjust it's position etc. Try them out looking for the obvious such as a knob with an image that looks like it will stretch it etc. Also, you might want to adjust your settings to a different resolution. For example: 800X600, 1024X768 etc. To do that, just right click on an empty space on your desktop, select PROPERTIES, then left click on SETTINGS, then move the slider under SCREEN AREA. Hope this helps, T.

Also, when I turn on the laptop, it turns on and off a couple of times before starting fully.

Hi all, I have an odd question. My keyboard, a Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard, isn't registering F1-F2, nor the "at" symbol. It recognizes capital letters, and !#$%^&*()_. At is the only symbol not registering.
Also, I can type the number "2".

The weird part is: Shift+2 works in World of Warcraft. My question is why? DirectInput or something?

If someone can put me in the right direction would be great, I'd love to be able to type again.

Thanks,

Fud

My suggestion is to try another keyboard and see if those keys work.
Then, try either a USB or a PS2 keyboard (whichever is different from yoru Microsoft keyboard) to see if it's the keyboard controller that's the problem.

Hello everyone,

I'm using MS Word (with Windows XP), and I have a recurring problem. When I select Inset --> Insert Symbol, the program opens the window somewhere off screen. In other words, the frame around my open document dims (as it's no longer the active window); when I use alt+tab, the "Symbols" window appears as an option; and if I press enter, a symbol is inserted into my document--but I can't see the window, so I can't choose my symbol!

I've tried using shift+arrows, ctrl+arrows, etc., to move the window back onto my screen, but this doesn't work. Selecting the Symbols window via alt+tab doesn't move the window onto my screen. I've had this problem before and I can't remember how I fixed it, but it does this consistently, regardless of whether I restart the computer. All my other windows open correctly.

Please help! --Thanks, Erin

A friend has just created a new subdomain of his existing site. If I go to http://www.newsubdomain.existingsite.com, I see the host's generic "new site will be available soon" message. BUT if I go to http://newsubdomain.existingsite.com (that is, the same address, but without the leading "www."), I wind up on the site for some perfectly innocent-looking automotive specialty parts distribution company. (It looks like they mostly sell to retailers, not the public, so it makes no sense at all for them to be complicit in this apparent hijacking, although someone could have put something malicious on their site, I guess.)My computer is a laptop running WinXP Pro. AVG, spybot and Ad-aware scans find nothing amiss. The machine has no other symptoms of any kind of infection, afaict. The problem shows up regardless of whether I use Firefox or IE, but another machine on my home-network does NOT have this problem, so I know it's not a case of my ISP's DNS cache having been poisoned. I did run ipconfig /flushdns from a command prompt; that didn't fix it.Could this just be some simple corrupted record somewhere, or must we conclude a malware infection?TIA!!!

I got broadband last week and we're only allowed 2GB monthly usage limit (hehe, well it is cheap). I was wondering if streaming videos counts towards this, like does it take up disk space? And is there any chance of viruses? Thanks, pretty random, but I'd like to know.

A:ok this is probably the wrong place, but...youtube

Hi...

Yes that will count towards your 2GB monthly allowance...everything you get from the internet will count (emails, webpages, videos, music etc).

It does take up disk space but once you clear your temporary internet files, that will solve the problem.

As with the risks of internet use, there is a chance of picking up spyware/viruses by downloading content....but the chances are far less with reputable sites.

Hope that helps :)

I have WINDOWS XP, and can't figure out what other topic this question might belong in...

I don't know when or how it happened, but two file folders MY SHARED DOCUMENTS and CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS are now in MY COMPUTER.

MY COMPUTER, where it shows the drives. I am pretty sure it never had yellow folders in it before.

I think they should be in C DRIVE? There is a MY DOCUMENTS in C Drive, but it has nothing in it. I'm the only one who uses this computer, but apparenty everything saved goes into CARRIE'S DOCUMENTS. SHARED DOCUMENTS has various folders in it that I suppose would be shared by all, if others used the computer, too.

I've tried dragging them there (or anywhere) but only shortcuts appear in the new area. The folders still say in MY COMPUTER. They won't copy and paste.

When I open something, like in WORD, etc. I can still find them, just they are under MY COMPUTER.

So, they still work, it just seems strange, like they shouldn't be in MY COMPUTER. Unless I have totally missed this for the past year, I don't remember ever seeing them in there before. I take pictures off my memory card with a removable drive, which shows up as F drive, so I look in MY COMPUTER to click on this, all the time.

What happened and how can I fix it? Actually, since it seems to work this way, the only reason to fix it seems to be it looks odd this way.

~ Carrie

Could anyone tell me the best utility for fixing the registry/broken links/shortcuts etc in XP Home. My computer has become quite slow and I think I may have a lot of rubbish cluttering up the system.I do tend to trial a lot of progs and then uninstall them.

A:This question may be in the wrong place

Personally I would not 'fix' anything in the Registry. Yes there may be a few broken links but they will be taking up minimal space and will probably not cause your system to slow down that you would notice.. Better to defrag your hard disc and run something like Cleanup! to clear out your temp files etc.

Hi, has anyone ever experienced this, in Win XP?

I'll try to explain the best I can... my father (on his computer), was playing around with his taskbar putting it on the sides to see if he'd like there, I guess...

Now he's got repeats of his icons from the desktop sitting on his taskbar, fullsize. We tried to delete them, but if we did, they would also delete the twin that's on the desktop. I found this too be so weird, his taskbar is now about an inch and a quarter high, and we could not reduce it.

Has anyone ever seen such a glitch?

I don't think a restore would do anything, it being icons...

Okay, I've checked everything I know how to, but cannot figure this out- I'm only putting this here because what I'm hearing comes from the sub of my Logitech z-5500d setup.

Often, when I plug in a USB cable, or touch anything metal to my case, I hear a "click" out of the woofer. I also hear it when I switch speeds on my ceiling fan.
Or when the washing machine switches from wash to spin. (The fan only does it switching from "hi" to "medium," not from med to slow.

Multimeter shows no faults anywhere on/in the case. Any electricians out there?

Hi!

I recently bought all the parts to build my very own gaming pc, which one of them is the Antec Khler h2o k240.

I build it myself and I got to the BIOS but now i see when i start my pc only 1 of my cooler fans doesn?t rotate.

I got my fans connected to cpu_fan and AIO_pump. But I don?t think the last one is correct. Should I put the AIO_pump to cpu_OPT or am i missing the point somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

A:Cooler 4 pins at the wrong place?

I looked at the manual and it is just about useless. With dual fans, there should be a spliter for the fan pw and that goes on the cpu fan header. Both fans pw from the single header. From the manual, it shows the pump being connected to a sata type pw connector. This is pretty strange; all of the AIO type coolers I have seen have pump pw going to a AIO header on the motherboard. It is hard for me to understand how pump RPM is going to be monitored by using a sata pw connector......
Again the manual is useless.

FWIW I recommend coolermaster water cooling IF you really want water cooling.

I am able to send and receive emails, but the sent mails are being saved in the Sent Items folder in Local Folders rather than in the IMAP account. Anybody know how to make them appear in a sent items folder in the IMAP account? Id ask tech support at lunarpages, but theyre gone until Tuesday.
Thanks,
Ken

I've installed a windows to go on my USB driver. It works well, but only doesn't work on my own home computer.
The symptom is that it will boot from my hard drive(I've already set the BIOS to boot from USB drive).
I've checked the BCD file in my USB drive, it's normal when booting from other computers. But on my home computer, it will be replaced by another file, which contents are exactly same as BCD file on my hard drive. I don't know why.
So it there anyone who knows about the boot process of windows to go? And how could i solve this problem?

I'm trying to use robocopy for mirroring my most important files between two computers. Except for one issue, it works as expected.

I'm trying to copy the complete "Documents" directory. Previously, this was called "My documents" and contained for example "My pictures". Now it doesn't, and I like that, but robocopy don't. Somehow it still searches for these directories, and of course can't find them. Seems robocopy needs a fix, or am I missing out on something here?

A:Robocopy looking for my directories in the wrong place

When I use robocopy, I use it in a text based batch file. So, as long as your paths are correct in the batch file it should go exactly where you tell it to. I haven't noticed any issues doing it this way with Windows 7.

For some time now I have had no sound. I think I might have plugged the sound connector into the wrong hole. On the back of my Dell Dimension #2350 PC are 3 holes (one pink, one light blue and one real dark blue). I currently have it plugged into the pink hole & was wondering if I should try one of the other two.

Have I got it connected in the right hole now or would I hurt anything by moving it to one of the other two holes?

I am a beginner and would really appreciate any suggestions and/or help as I really miss the sound, especially on e-mail cards I receive.

A:Have I Got Sound Connected In Wrong Place?

It would not hurt the computer or your speakers to plug it into the other holes.

Make sure your speakers are plugged into the wall (if they are that type of speaker), make sure they are turned on! And turned up! Put in some music, play it, and then plug the speakers into the different ports and see if they work.

If they still don't, let us know and one of us can walk you through it!

Hi,
To put if breifly I was wiping the cmos after some trouble I'd had with my PC, I got distracted and when I went back I powered up the computer with the cmos jumper still in the wipe position. It won't boot to windows and seems pretty messed up, anybody know if how I could get around this?? I'm I right in thinking I could flash the bios, I haven't personally done that before so if somebody could speak me through what to do I'd be most appreciative...

Thanks in advance,
CrazyCris

Have you switched the jumper back to the correct position?

Does the computer POST? Do you hear a beep or see anything on the screen?

Hello,

My colleague has Win7 Ent. and sometimes, some senders in Outlook 2007 appear in "?" symbols. In attachment also IE10 pop up from Linkedin, this time another symbol, so its not only Outlook affected. Emails are from Russia like the other ones that works fine.
Any one experienced something like this?

thank you
Cali

A:"?" symbol appears instead of letters

Sounds to me like the first thing to do is determine what Font is being used in the sent messages and assure it is installed on the recipient's computer.

PC Win 7 64-bit system working in jGRASP. I'm relatively new to programming and a rank beginner with Java. Need to ask the user for a birthdate in this specific format (mm dd yyyy) and then extract the month, day, and year separately.

My program up to this point has compiled with no problem. With the code below, it throws the "cannot find symbol" error. This part of the program is not a method within a method, it's just in main.

//Get the date of birth.
System.out.println("Please enter the renter's date of birth (mm dd yyyy): ");
birthMonth = kb.nextChar().trim().charAt(0,1);

The "kb" is the keyboard input. I'm sure the error is in charAt(0,1); but I don't know how else to extract more than one character from a line. I've roamed around the API and haven't found a solution there yet. Thanks.

A:"cannot find symbol" Java

I'm not a Java programmer myself, so I can only give generic suggestions and anything I can glean from the documentation.

Regarding your specific problem
charAt only takes one parameter, the index, and only gives a single character.
If you wanted to extract multiple characters from a string, either run it a few times in a loop, or better use something like substring.

I'm not sure that's the core of your problem however. You're basically using one line to do two different things: get the input from the keyboard (put it all into a string variable temporarily) and then process it (working on that variable). I'd suggest making sure that each line only does one thing, just so that you can tell whether it's the charAt making itself annoying or whether there's something wrong with the keyboard input. It just makes it easier to debug things when they're split up.

Also, make sure that birthMonth is of the right type. I doubt there's a programmer on earth who hasn't tried to put the character "1" into an integer value expecting it to be 1, and spent their due period of anguish trying to work out what is wrong.
