Changing Monitor Display Numbering

Q: Changing Monitor Display Numbering

Windows x64, 16gig Ram, 256ssd, dual video cards.
We have workstations with 4 or even 6 monitor configurations. There is 3D software that we use that is giving us fits. The developers came back to us saying that the primary monitor (1 in Windows GUI) needs to be the monitor we are doing 3D off
of. The primary monitor (1) needs to come off a specific video card (mainly dual card stations). It doesn't matter the order in Windows.
I am very familiar with changing the monitor order in Screen Resolution and this won't work. If I disconnect all the monitors and start with the primary monitor on the primary card, then add the monitors after that, it reverts back to the original
number before I started all my work.
I found a registry key that looked very promising. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\monitor\Enum has values that correspond with the GUI numbering. The values on my test station with dual monitors says: Default, 0, 1, Count,
NextInstance. "0" corresponds with "1" in the Display Settings GUI of Windows. "1" corresponds with "2" in Windows GUI. I renamed the keys so that 0 is now 1 and 1 now 0. Rebooted and the settings
go back to pre-modification settings.
I even tried moving the video card from one slot to another and just turning on the system with the monitor I want as 1 connected. Once I connected the other monitor, it reverts back. I even deleted the monitor settings in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
and Connectivity to no avail.
Is there any way to get Windows to reassign the display numbering? I know this sounds crazy, but this is what the developer is telling us.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello,
I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit on a Dell Precision M6800 laptop, graphics card is Nvidia Quadro K3100M. I have a 3-monitor setup: one monitor being the laptop LCD, and the other two being Dell U2414h. My laptop is on the far right. I've had these in extended mode with a Display Port 1.2 daisy chain setup for about 1.5 years. Due to the massive headache of the DP1.2 daisy chain setup not being reliable with these monitors (tons of forums on this subject), I recently bought an HDMI 2.0 cable so I could run one U2414h off of the DP1.2 port on my laptop and the other U2414h off the HDMI port on my laptop. When all three monitors are turned on, I like my main display to be the monitor on the far left. With the previous daisy chain setup, my main display would shift from left to right as my monitors were turned off (left to right). With this current setup (one via DP1.2, the other via HDMI), my main display will not shift to my middle monitor when the left one is turned off, so when I turn my left monitor off, I lose my task bar and all icons (they don't shift to another monitor). Is anyone else using a similar setup where they've had this issue, and was there a resolve?

Thanks in advance!

A:Windows 7 no changing main display when monitor is turned off

Hi Mike Moren, welcome to the Forum.

As you are using separate inputs to the monitors, one being HDMI & the other the DP1.2 port, you will not get automatic shifting of the main Desktop screen when you turn one of the monitors off, like you were before.

You can use the Windows key/P key to switch between monitors. You are using the extended screen set up at present, so only one screen has the full desktop showing. Using the Windows/P keys you can have all screens as duplicate also if you wish. Try it out & see for yourself.

If you right click on your main desktop & select Screen Resolution there are some options to select from as well.

I have two displays connected to my laptop connected like this:
On the Screen Resolution page, each display is numbered and to get my screens to be oriented correctly, the numbers got disoriented.

This matters for a couple reasons, but my main issue is that my wallpaper is on the wrong screen to the two sides are swapped.

Does anyone know how to fix the numbering? Or fix my wallpaper?

I have a Request_ID field that I need to be consecutively numbered (Not AutoNumber, I have that in another field for linking the table). Users will use a form to enter a new record into the table, and I need a pop-up or something similar to display their request number after they submit the record, as they need the number for their hard-copy request forms. This is a multi-user data base, and I'm running Access 2007 on Windows XP.

Hello everyone, As described in the title, I have an issue with my Yoga 720 15" with the GTX1050 and external monitors. The external display disconnects whenever I launch a game in fullscreen mode or when I change and apply display settings in Windows 10 (for example when I change from extend to pc screen only and then back to extend). Basically whenever the screen has to turn black and reload new graphical settings. The only solution then is to replug the HDMI cable on the monitor.  I have tested this with multiple monitors and TVs as well as different types of connections such as usb-c to HDMI cables and usb-c hubs with integrated HDMI ports. Graphics drivers are all up to date.  Can anyone help me out here?

My Dell Insipron 6400 laptop will not support multiple monitors. I think I may not have a key driver installed. Help!!

I have attached two separate images, screen shot of my device manager and display properties and a screen shot of the same image on my mothers PC. (which is also a Dell Inspiron 6400)

On my PC, In my device manager I can not view the display adapters (there must be something installed and I do not have visiblilty?? correct??)

Also, on my display properties I do not even have the option for Multiple monitor support. (these are the same PC's)

I inserted my Drivers and Utilities CD from Dell, but I did not see any driver on there that was applicable to a display adapter.

Am I on the right track???

Thanks

Hello folks,

I seem to be having multiple problems all at the same time (all of which may or may not be related) but let me start from the beginning.

This all started when I tried to connect my Inspiron 1720 laptop to our television. For some reason my laptop froze, the image on both my computer and TV had white lines across it, and so I turned off my system since it was locked up.

I restarted and began having display problems - first windows were not opening in the desktop area. They would open in the system tray, but were "unreachable" by the mouse. I played with display settings and got the screen to fit...but now seem to have 2 primary problems:

PROBLEM 1:

Whenever I play games, view pictures, or Windows Media Player, I see strange "plaid boxes." However, the desktop is fine and everything else appears to work fine. I contacted NVIDIA and I have installed different driver versions, as well as the OEM (Dell's) driver's - all did not work - I still saw the distorted images when playing games, viewing pictures, and videos.

I have also completed System Restore's to points prior to when I was having the problem - unfortunately that did not work.

Here are screenshots of what I am seeing:

The first set of pictures that you put up look like classics examples of bad video RAM. In a desktop PC I would tell you to swap out the video card with a differnt one to verify that is the issue since in a few cases bad drivers can cause the issue but it's highly unlikely. Professional service by a local non big box computer shop is your best bet at this point.

Tonight I was playing a good old game. I minimized to my desktop while the game was running and pulled open Windows calculator, did some calculator stuff, but then the computer goes into a blue error screen and then restarts. A few moments later, the display on my monitor suddenly turns off as if it were put to sleep. And even if I turn it off cold and restart the computer, nothing appears on the display at all, not even a BIOS logo screen. So weird.

System specs:

GRAPHICS: AMD Radeon HD 6310

I have a Benq FP7IE+ monitor that has suddenly stopped working. Here's the breakdown:

-when you turn the monitor on when hooked to a computer it will sometimes show the display for a brief moment (ie. showed HP booting screen at startup) and than stops displaying, but the blue light stays on the unit as if it is receiving a display. Other times it will display nothing at all, but the blue light stays on.

-with the blue light on if you attempt to press any of the menu buttons on the monitor itself again nothing is displayed.

-I don't believe that it's a refresh rate or driver issue even though I reinstalled the driver and hooked the monitor to PC running in safe mode and still no display (even though the blue light stays on).

-not the VGA cable, tried another, same result.

-hooked monitor to PC with the identical monitor working on it, same result, no display.

-if you unplug the power cord from the monitor and then plug back in and power back on it will always show the "Benq - Energy Star Qualified Monitor" screen as bright as ever, but then nothing is display even though blue light stays on.

-tried monitor on 3 different computers, no display on any of them.

Any idea what might be causing this? I apologize for being so long winded, but I wanted to include as many details as possible.

Hi.

I recently got a monitor from one of my friends saying that it was broken. Its a Dell 19in LCD. I have my main monitor a 22in Samsung wide screen So i just plugged it into the second DVI slot on my graphics Card. When i went into the display config i set up dual monitors just to see if it was working. The dell monitor would blink up then quit on me.

When i was messing with the Display settings I made the Dell. Not my Samsung the Default Monitor. I unpluged the broken Dell and restarted. Now my computer regognizes the Samsung as the second monitor and it just shuts it off and recognizes nothing as the main.

I managed to get it into safe mode and it recognized the samsung but every time i try go back to Normal Start the screen is blank.

How can i get it to recognize the Samsung as my main?

Can I blank screen the 1st (laptop screen) monitor, yet continue to use the 2nd monitor with the lid open for access to the keyboard?(I noticed with changed settings in Win7 control panel, I can close the lid without cutting off [sleep, hibernate or shut-off] the computer and had to reduce the 2nd monitor display to fit the visible screen. But to use the keyboard one has to open the laptop lid, which kicks in the 1st screen)Thank you

Hi - I have recently acquired a new work computer with 1 widescreen Dell monitor (Dell E228WFPc 1680 x 1050, Monitor A) and my older 4:3 monitor (E178FPc 1024 x 768, Monitor B). The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 620. I cannot get them both working at the same time on an extended display.

One is plugged into (excuse my slightly less-than-technical language here!) the 'main' monitor port and one has a VGA-DVI adapter.

When either monitor A or B is plugged into the main port without the other plugged in, they work fine.

When monitor A, the widescreen, is plugged into the main port and B is plugged in via the adapter, A works perfectly and the PC detects monitor B (if I set it to extend displays, programs open in that screen but I cannot see anything - the screen is completely black).

When B is plugged into the main port and A is on the adapter, B boots up normally until the point where I would usually see my Windows log in, when it goes black and I can only see and move the cursor.

I thought it would be a case of adjusting the screen res down so that they weren't so drastically different - in fact I'm still sure that would help but I can't get the smaller monitor B to let me do so and it doesn't seem to make a difference when widescreen monitor A is plugged into the main port with B in the other?

A:Extended display monitor problems with one widescreen and one 4:3 monitor?

That is usually normal. Try dragging a window over to the other monitor and see if it works.

I ordered and today received a new Gateway DX4831 07 Window 7 Desktop Computer and a new FHX2300 23 inch Gateway Monitor. I connected the monitor and computer in accordance (I used the HDMI cable connection between the computer and the monitor) with the included documentation double checked the connections and then turned on the monitor first and then powered up the computer. The monitor displays Gateway for a second or two and then after about 10 seconds it quickly displays no signal before going completely black. Upon turning on the computer, it beeps once and then after about a minute I hear a whirring sound as if the hard drive is turning. After that, the computer is very quiet (as I have read in reviews that it should be), but the monitor remains black no matter how long I leave the computer on. This is the second Gateway DX4831 07 I have ordered/received in the last two weeks. The first one did the same thing and I sent it back and reordered the same model hoping the second one would work. I really want to keep this computer rather than send it back a second time since it is full of features for the price. Gateway’s support is virtually nonexistent so this is not a reasonable option. All I can do is return it for a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Can you tell what the problem is likely to be and how I can solve it so that I can keep this computer. Hi, I have a very nice Gateway laptop, three years old, it is a P-Series MG1
with dual core Centrino 2000 mgz CPUs and 4 gigs of RAM and 17 inch screen.

It was dropped once from a short height and ever since there is a permanent black vertical band near the right hand side of the screen. Replacing the LCD
screen will cost $200.

I would like to be able to reduce the amount of the screen that the computer display uses, so that I can narrow it enough to avoid the black vertical band which blocks everything displayed beneath it. My idea is that there may be some way to adjust the display settings to a completely smaller size , to use only the screen only partially. I'd like to be able to just click and drag the desktop to a reduced size , filling to the edge of the blacked out band and no farther.
Do you think there is a way to do this? I am using Windows XP

A:Line on monitor, can I use just half of the monitor for display?

What you can try to do if you dont want to replace the screen now is just hook it up to an external monitor and use it that way until you are ready to replace the screen. If it wont work with another monitor then replacing the screen will take care of the problem.Trying to reduce the settings might work but i dont think its going to be practical enough to be usable to see anything decent.

Hi everyone,

I feel like a complete fool . The monitor to my computer was working fine but for a refresh rate problem. I located the correct driver online and installed it, but there was no option to change things on the display>advanced>monitor window. I then resorted to changing other settings and in the process must have switched off a hardware option as when I restarted, the monitor only displayed the XP loading page... nothing bewond this... this problem has persisted ever since.

I have tried to investigate the bios for any clues, but all the changes I have made have not made a difference. Does anyone know what is going on? Is there any way I can change the settings. I tried to run off a spare hard drive, however, the same problem occurs.

chkdsk

A:No display after changing settings

sorry, correction: it worked with another hard drive (connected the old one by mistake forst time). I entered under safe mode and with last known settings that worked. The monitor displayed correctly after this... even after restart under normal mode . Has the problem been fixed permanently?

This still leaves me with my original problem. I have installed a sony driver for my lcd display as the screen refresh rate was insufficient and the monitor was running as Default Monitor. After installing the driver, I was expecting to see some more options under monitor settings, but it is still showing as before: Use hardware default setting

Could anyone advise me on how to tell the system to use the information provided in my driver?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Morning everyone,

I am working with Windows 7 Professional 32-bit, in a network environment and I am trying to test it with our old GPOs we use on XP machines.

I am currently trying to install GPSI's such as Office etc.

When I reboot the machine after a GPUpdate I can only see 'Please Wait' while it installs the updates, but I know some of these updates will hang. I won't know what's hanging if I can't see what stage of the update it is at.

Is there anyway of customising this area of the startup to display which updates are installing?

Like in Windows XP where the box would appear in the middle of the screen saying "Installing Managed Software <Program Name>" etc.

Thanks for any help you can give regarding this.

No, but it is somewhat annoying to look at the XP toolbar and the classic desktop. I am running XP SP3 and have never had this problem before. PS. It is not virus related. I am running Avast and recently pulled the HD and swept it as a slave drive with for anti-virus and spyware programs. Found nothing but cookies.

I need to change some display settings in the control panel. Specifically, the ones on the window when you type desk.cpl into the command prompt on vista. Can anyone tell me how to do this (if it is possible)? I know C++ and Java and a little VB, but general answers are fine too. Thanks.

My pc recently died and I'm converting to a mac. I have a disc with my printer but the mac doesn't have a reader - so I downloaded EayStart from the HP website but it's not as near user friendly as the one I had on windows (or is it just me). It just seems very basic and doesn't give me the options I had with windows. Is there a similar programme to download to operate my printer on mac?

I'm trying to fine-tune the monitor I have to replace the HP w2007monitor that came with the HP Pavilion PC. The DELL monitor is fuzzy and YouTube and HULU videos are j-e-r-k-i-n-g like a frame is missing everynow and then. Also, the display is a little too wide -- on the right and left. I can barely see the scroll bar on the left-- and if I move it to the right, I can't see everything on the right side. The DELL website shows a DELL N2010WFP driver, but this DELL monitor just says N20 10N. Is that the same thing?
And how many Hertz? Gosh, this is hard to figure out. Thank you!

My monitor keeps changing its settings. I have a compaq monitor and on and off the setting controls pop up on the screen and the setting have changed. The brightness and contrast keep going to different settings. I checked Norton to see if I had a virus and all showed clear..but heard this can be signs of a worm or virus. Any clues??? SHARI

Please do this. Click here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html to download Hijack This.

It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

Hi akimatsu,

This sounds to me like an I18n problem, i.e. Internationalization (I followed by 18 more characters as an abbreviation), or more specifically setting the locale for it in the OS. Unfortunately, I do not know how to do that. It sounds as if your locale is set to China or locale language to Chinese. If the OS were Unix/Linux I would guess that a simple Environment variable change would be able to reset the the loacale provided that the appropriate locale support libraries are installed. A similar approach may also be required for Windows - I do not know.

For Windows XP Pro, the user interface is in English and if you require the user interface to appear in a language other than English, a localized language version or the MUI Pack is a more appropriate choice. Your problem seems to be the r... Read more

Gidday all. This is my first visit to this forum, so please bear with me.
My problem is like this:
Firstly, this is what I did.
* I setup my desktop background picture and colour scheme by clicking on the desktop and selecting properties;
* I got into the area that allows one to choose the colours for the desktop, windows background etc (all those elementary things that were easy in the anceint versions of windows);
* I chose a custom colour version of "cyan" for my background and use black for the letters. I prefer this combination as it's easier on the eyes than a white background with black letters.
Secondly, I saved everything then selected apply.
So far so good. Works well for awhile. Then in the middle of working on something (even Word) I get the "PLEASE WAIT" window and everything defaults back to the original windows colour scheme. This problem occurs regardless of what application I use.
Has anyone got any suggestions, please? I contacted the tech help guys that set up my machine originally but they couldn't help.
Cheers

A:Changing appearance of display colour scheme

Hello and welcome to TSF.

A few suggestions to try out while others ponder the possible causes.

1. After making the changes go and right click on the desktop and under arrange icons , choose lock the desktop.

2. Control panel / display / settings/ troubleshooting
lower the hardware accelleration.

3. Right click my computer choose properties (or control panel => system) => advanced => performance => settings
Click adjust for best appearance.

Restart after you have made these changes so that they get hard recorded to the registry hive before anything else tries to use the old settings.

Hey guys

So about two days ago i went to make a folder on my desktop, randomly this text box comes up in the middle of my screen saying "Gamma correction" and my screen gets this weird yellow/orange tint to it. So naturally i searched the internet and found out that i could set my display calibration by going into "Display color calibration". Thinking i had to go through this whole process, i clicked "next" once and didnt even have to adjust everything, and the colors were back to normal. i thought "well that was easy".

I put my computer into hibernation and came back a few hours later, logged in, and my screen was that weird yellow/orange tint again. so i did the same thing as before and it fixed it. Now everytime i bring my computer out of hibernation, i need to go through that whole process. is there a way to fix this?

EDIT: Btw i have an Asus g50vt-x5 laptop and my graphics card is a Nvidia GeForce 9800m GS

Hello Italia366. This might be your graphics chip over heating, have you blown the dust out of the laptop recently?
Go to control Panel/Color Management and make sure you have Use my settings for this device checked as shown.

Hey,

Been getting frequent BSOD's after changing my display input.
Previously i was using a DVI Input through the Motherboard I/O. I then changed the input to my graphics card using an HDMI cable. I read around and was advised to uninstall the drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller which i did but these still mantain.
The graphics card is a MSI Radeon HD 7770. I'm running windows 8.1.

I've attached a crash list from BlueScreenView inc. a crash i just experienced. I've also included the files from the tool in the sticky.

Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Download Combofix to your desktop.

Doubleclick combofix.exe

Follow the prompts.Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang. When finished, and after reboot if it asks for one, combofix will open again to gather the necessary information for the log. This may take a while so please be patient. When done, Combofix will close and a log should open called combofix.txt. Post the contents of this log in your next reply along with a new hijackthislog. Please do not post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask you to.

I just bought a new Dell Inspiron 530 with WinXP Home. Everything is working fine ACCEPT, every time I do a cold restart of my computer the Display setting return to 'Windows XP Style'. I keep setting it to 'Windows Classic Style' with a green background and green title bar is individual windows.

In addition, I have the sound set to 'No Sound' so all the beep and bells are shut off, that also reset itself to the default of endless annoying beep and whistles.

Things I've tried so far-

1) I tried creating my own display Theme called 'Green-1'. When the computer does a power-up Start, the Themes display still says 'Green-1' but the display has been reset to 'Win XP Style'. However, the Start Menu and the background color remain as I set them (classic and green respectively).

Note: A warm power-on Restart some will maintain the setting and sometimes will not. But, so far, a cold power-off Start resets to Default every time.

2.) In another forum, someone suggested a Registry change which can be found at -

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Under the title -

"Windows XP doesn`t save User Settings"

which makes the following changes -

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoSaveSettings"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
