p50 nvme upgrade fail - ideas?

Q: p50 nvme upgrade fail - ideas?

Hi Folks - Forgive me if I'm missing a post that solves this problem, I've found some related but nothing that hits it exactly. I have a new p50, and as many have, I got a cheap format (sata SSD 256gb, 16gb ram) so I could put my own drives in. I got 'Windows 7 pre-loaded through downgrade rights' so the first thing I did was upgrade back to Windows 10. Then I used Macrium to clone the drive to an external SATA box, and swapped in 2 1TB NVME's from Toshiba (OCZ RD400). Used Macrium recovery media to clone back to one of the two SSD's, and? Nothing. Windows won't start, gives error: Inaccessible_boot_device or words to that effect. Yet, BIOS sees both NVME's, and they're in the boot order in the config, so? Then I thought, OK, let's just go straight to clean windows install. I created a windows 10 install media, and: Won't install, says 'Windows can't be installed to this disk, because you can't boot off of this disk, please check your bios and make sure that a driver for the device is enabled'. Yet, windows installer media sees both and can partition them, etc. As above, BIOS sees the NVME's, which test out fine in system tests in the startup options. If I put the old drive back, it starts up just fine and, indeed, will even boot off the USB/SATA drive, as long as that original Lenovo drive is in there. Any ideas? Thanks so much, Regards, Eric

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I seem to find people interested in buying the computers I build, so I keep selling mine. I pull out my SSDs, buy a new one and then load windows for the new owner.

A small introduction, and it?s nice to meet you. The number of computers I?ve build over the last 20 years is astronomical. I have always been an AMD Fan, mostly good times with AMD. Started with the AMD K6-2, went to the AMD 64 socket 754, 939, AM2, Phenom, Phenom II, FX and now Ryzen!

For the CPU debate, I?ve just never been into Intel. But we?re stuck with them in Dell workstations at my IT job. I will give Intel there props when it comes to single-thread gaming. There is no better platform for gaming than Intel, if that is primarily what you use your PC for. The best Intel CPU? The 8700K. You can skip the 9th generation and the probably the next generation ? haven?t we had enough of the Coffeelake refresh?

With the exception of the Athlon 64s, AMD has gotten its butt kicked by Intel ? until Lisa Su showed up at AMD and basically build Ryzen and the company back up with scratch. Ryzen is the best CPU price to performance there is on the planet. Eight-core Ryzen?s hold their own against the Coffeelake CPUs and cost half as much! And Ryzen is better than Intel when it comes to muli-thread performance.

Think of Intel as a Corvette, and Ryzen as a 4x4 pickup. Do you want to do one task fast, or multiple tasks (streaming, video rendering, gaming) at the same time.

So on to the new build and you ... Read more

I have a Windows 8.1 Pro x64 on an Intel 660P PCI-E NVME drive, it is working perfect.
I wopuld like to uppgrade my hardware, i need to uppgrade to Windows 10.
When i uppgraded to Windows 10 on the old (W8.1 compatible) hardware, it says after rebooting:

can not boot from the drive - "incassible boot drive", does not boot.
I had to downgrade back to windows 8.1 it can boot again.
The uppgraded system can boot on a SATA SSD, but not the PCI-E NVME M.2 SSD.

What can I do, i have a lot of installed program on my system, a want to uppgrade to 10.
It is working hardware with a clean windows 10 install, but it does not boot with the uppgrade.
I want to keep my PCI-E NVME M.2 SSD and all my installed programs on a Windows, but i need Windows 10 for the hardware uppgrade, but how should i uppgrade to get a boot?

What can I do ?

I am not worried about the warranty, only if it can be done. 1) Would the laptop still come with the M.2 slot for an SSD?2) If it has the slot, is it PCIe 3.0 NVMe capable?3) Would the BIOS of the machine allow me to install Windows 10 on it and make it the boot drive?4) It comes with one 8GB stick of RAM, would I be able to add another 8GB stick. I would appreciate any help you can give, thanks.

After 4 months the parts needed to install the NVMe M.2 drive in a T580 arrived from Encompass. They are:01YR45701YR466The hardware portion of the install is fairly easy. The cable is a little bit long and you have to tuck it in between a small space on the motherboard. I replaced the existing 500MB SATA drive and connect all the part for the new HP 1TB (EX920) drive. I connect the old drive to a USB and attempt to clone the drive to the new M.2. The new drive M.2 drive is not recognized. What is the secret to getting the system to recognize the M.2? I've tried WinPE boot OS, Win 10 and Acronis's app.

Hello, I just bought a new T570 with the standard HDD. After doing some research about upgrading the drive, there are a few things that I just cannot get solid answers for. I know that I could use the Wwan slot and install a 2242 size M.2 SSD drive (if i could even find a good one).I know that I could get an adapter for the HDD slot so that I could install a 2280 size SSD in the HDD bay. The outstanding questions I have are as follows; If I were to install say a Samsung 960 EVO M.2 PCIe in the HDD slot with the adapter in the HDD bay, would it will only be able to run at SATAIII speeds? If this is the case would I be better off just getting a standard SATA SSD with the 500mb(ish) speeds so that im not paying for something thats just gonna be limited because of the systems capabilities? We're talking a significant speed difference between the two interfaces, so I just dont want to exceed what the system can handle.  Everything I have read about this system states that there are only 2 PCI lanes in use for the PCI bus, does this mean that the maximum possible speed of any M.2 drive would be limited because of the 2 vs 4 PCI lanes? If so, does this mean a 50% speed reduction in the drive performance? Do they make some sort of extender cable that would allow me to connect an M.2 drive to the Wwan slot but mount it in th HDD bay? It would eliminate the need for a 2242 size dive and I would just need the housing adapter to make it work. Th... Read more

Hi,

just built a Desktop PC after my last one packed up. I had a limited budget so really just went for a basic PC. I use it mostly for Digital Photography, Internet, Home Office and Games.

I hoped over the next few months to upgrade a few bits, again on a limited budget, has anyone any ideas for decent replacement parts?

The system consists of :-

2 gb Ram DDR2 800 (not sure make)
AMD+ X2 5600
ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus Mother board
X/Vision 512 mb GeForce 8500 GT Super SLI (PCI-E)
Creative SB Audigy 2 Z5
500 Gb HD (Sata)
250 Gb HD (Sata)
2x Sony DVD writers (IDE)
Power 450w

Now I wasn't sure about the memory I hoped to add another 2 Gb stick, however the manual says it needs to be paired, does this mean that I need two sticks exactly the same and will have to scrap the stick I bought or can I buy another stick with the same specifications?

I'm also thinking of a better graphics card as I didn't read the reviews on this before I bought it. Although any games I've run so far have run fine for me at 1280 x 1024 (I've not run anything bang up to date yet though).

Would upgrades or changes would you consider if this was your system and you were working to a tight budget?

thanks

Dear members, Hello, I am a user of T460p (20FW*).Currently, I am planning to upgrade the storage on my laptop. But there is an issue on specifying the suitable type of storage. My device is equipped with the Toshiba NVMe drive named THNSF5256GCJ7, which looks like a standard 7mm SATA3 SSD (for my knowledge, it is a very weird combination). Though  I searched the appropriate replacement for that model in both shape and communication interface, there seems no model with such specs.  Seeing the slot shape, I think it would be okay to set a SATA3 interface SSD, however, the word 'NVMe' makes me completely confused.  Does anyone know what model will be appropriate for my T460p?For your understanding, I attached the screen capture of HWINFO64 summary. Many thanks in advance.

Hi Community, I need some advice. I currently have an aging T460s w/ a 1TB SATA SSD in it. I'd like to upgrade to NVMe. My number one concern is battery life. I need to squeeze as much battery life as I can from the system since I'm a very mobile / remote worker. My understanding is that OEM SSDs provide worse performance but better battery on these laptops. AFAIK, the stock OEM that shipped w/ the T460s was the Samsung PM961 which according to the latest benchmarks I can find should also provide the best battery life. I recently found a great deal on a SM961 1TB. Does anyone know if this was OEM shipped with any Lenovos? I'd like to be able to update the drivers on it. Additionally, the ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro looks to be decent with power consumption as well. Does anyone know if it might be better (from a battery life perspective, not performance) than the SM961?  Thanks in advance!-Ryan

Hello all, is it possible to upgrade, after market of course, to a 1T NVMe PCIe SSD? This is a novice question, but wanted to ask, as some friends are pushing me towards T460S because of this drive availability. Would not all I need is an adapter and would that, along with the  NVMe PCIe drive fit, within the casing? Or is it more technologially involved than that, like bios, space and other such? Also, the T460P has 4g RAM soldered in, yet one can upgrade to 32g involving 2 - 16g sticks, this does mean that the 4g is diabled with the 2 sticks installed, correct? TIA - bo1953

A:Windows 10 won't upgrade, any ideas?

Not sure why you don't get the update, but, if you don't want to wait any longer, use this method.....................

Use one of the links below and download the current Windows 10 ISO:

Media Creation Tool ( MCT ) :
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Tech Bench
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/softw...load/techbench
Using MCT as example................
Download the Tool and run it.
Then select Create installation media for another PC
That will begin downloading the ISO file to your computer.
When download is completed, RIGHT click at the ISO > click Mount > click Setup.exe.
That will begin installing Windows 10.
You have the choice of keeping settings, files and apps, ot keeping nothing.
No product key is required.
Activation will be automatic.

I have a price limit of $500. I plan to overclock the card in the future. The computer it will be used in is listed in my signature.

AFAIK, the stock OEM that shipped w/ the T460s was the Samsung P961 which according to the latest benchmarks I can find should also provide the best battery life. This has recently dropped in price to where it is now quite reasonable. Is this information accurate or am I better off going with a retail model? I'm also a Bitlocker user and would LOVE to utilize the hardware encryption feature which (while some information has been conflicting) requires OPAL which is disabled on some SSDs by Lenovo? Can anyone shed some light on hardware encyption w/ the P961 and or provide any additional information that may help me make a more informed decision? I also noticed the PN on Lenovo's store (4XB0N10301). Does anyone know if this is the PM961? Thanks in advance!-Ryan

Hey, ive had this card for quite sometime and i was wondering if there are any good upgrade candidates? There is nothing wrong with the card and it actually runs all my games (even new ones) flawlessly. Is this card too perfect or are there better ones out there?

I heard about the recent release of the geforce 285gtx card...

A:Ideas for geforce 8800gtx upgrade?

There are newer and better ones out there but,as long as it
does what is needed, you might as well wait til the prices come
down.
No need to drop $500 on a card, when you can get it for less
than half that later.

Hi guys,I just bought the T580 with their cheapest SATA HDD so that I can upgrade myself, but I realise that there's not an M.2 slot available for the upgrade drive (Samsung 960 Pro).I did a little bit of research, and I found these FRU's:01YR457    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter ASM for Tachi,TC-201YR466    Tachi-2(20L9/20LA/20LB/20LC) M.2 Adapter Cable,TC-2I can't find a place where to source these. Can anybody point me in the right direction?Thank you in advance.

Hi, I hope I haven't made a mistake, but I just received a Samsung 1TB Polaris SM961 NVMe M.2 80mm Solid State Drive/SSD to upgrade my HP Omen with. The laptop is not seeing the new drive.- The bios is not seeing the drive- Diagnostics saying device not present- I have followed instructions to perform a hard reset. I maybe foolishly believed that because it was mentioned that the 950 pro works, I assumed tha the 961 would work too..But maybe i have received a faulty device ? And tips comments or ideas ?Thanks Nigel

The Lenovo Ideapad C340 comes in countless configurations, which differ greatly across regions, countries and retailers. Generally, almost all the models come with m2-NVMe PCIe SSDs, except some entry level models (AMD Ryzen 3 and Intel Pentium CPUs) that sometimes come with m2-SATAIII. However, even for those exact configurations, I've fount equivalents with NVMe PCIe in other countries. Where I live - Romania - I fount the C340 14API with AMD Ryzen 3, 1920x1080 TN, 4GB RAM and 125GB SATAIII ssd, which I'm seriously considering buying. It's the best for me, from the limited options that are available in my country. But one thing bugs me, and I cannot find an answer - I intend to upgrade the RAM and the SSD, and I was wondering if I could replace the SATAIII m2 with an NVMe PCIe m2? Considering that this is the only one from the C340 line that comes with SATA and I can find in other countries the exact specs with NVMe - my supposition is that the motherboard might be the same and the m2 slot might be "ambidextrous" - it could accept both SATAIII and NVMe PCIe. However, I couldn't find confirmation. Please - does anyone know this or, perhaps, has done the upgrade successfully? In the case that a NVMe drive could be used, I would certainly buy it - otherwise I think I'll go for the ASUS TP412, which has a much nicer screen. PS. I am aware that with Ryzen 3 and 4/8GB RAM - not having the NVMe drive might not be my bottleneck. I want it more for its poten... Read more

I ordered a customized HP Omen laptop. However, I did not add m.2 to it because I thought I could put a better one inside.During customization, I saw NVMe m.2 as an option. Does this mean HP Omen m.2 socket support NVMe? I'm looking to add either a Samsung 950 Pro Series PCIe NVMe or HyperX Predator PCIe. At the very least, I'll add a SATA m.2 to it. I know NVMe is the fastest but it is very expensive.  If you could also explain me the differences between SATA m.2, PCIe m.2 and NVMe m.2, I'd appreciate it.

I'm having issues installing linux on my second NVMe drive because of this bug: https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/question/128422/one-of-two-identical-m2-nvme-drives-disabling-due-t... This is a known issue with Intel's firmware and they have issued an update:https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/28320/Known-Issue-Intel-SSD-760p-Pro-7600p-Series-SubNQN-C... However, the NVMe Firmware Update Utility seems to not include this most recent version. Is there any timetable for when this will be merged in to Lenovo's firmware? I've read that if the drive comes from an OEM like Lenovo we should wait until they issue their own firmware -Gabe
