disallowed access to a server

Q: disallowed access to a server

i have a weird issue that i'm handle with.
main goal - restrict users to access local servers via \\servername
server 2012 r2 , domain environment

i created a GPO that disallow access to servers - unc path cannot be accessed.
This Policy works. (attached file 1.png) When selecting a location to download a file, accessing through the address bar to unc path results in an error.

But when i perform the same operation through the file name bar it works and i don't received error message. (attached file 2.png)

bottom line, i want that users won't be able to access servers when perfoming " \\servername " or " \\serverIP "
please assist.

Preferred Solution: disallowed access to a server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On Windows7 Pro,  trying to run IIS.  The way I am used to execute is  on the browser "localhost".  I used to have the code in the directory  C:\inetpub\wwwroot.   Even before I copy,  I am hoping to see
the image IIS welcome page.  Once it is successful, want to copy the code as that was the way I used to do in Window XP.    However I am getting the following message.  I have administrator access to the machine and gave full permissions

Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the Web server's administrator to give you access to 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot'.

Can someone help me to address this issue.  Thanks a lot in advance.

I have a Access 2000 database residing on one sever and an installation of SQL Server 2008 residing on another. Both servers are running Windows Server 2003. I created a linked server using the code below. When I run EXEC sp_tables_ex 'PropCont' I get the following,

I'd like to learn more about why this was logged in the Event Viewer:  i.imgur.com/a2vTjwD.png
After looking it up, I found this article (https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/2728973) which stated that "An attacker could use these certificates to spoof content, perform phishing attacks, or perform man-in-the-middle attacks."

I've never seen this logged in the Event Viewer before, and am not sure how to be protected from any of these vulnerabilities that Microsoft has outlined, now that a potential infection could have already happened.

So my question is: how do I remove the certificate? Where are these "disallowed certificates" located?

Hi there
Why does Windows Networking always seem to hose things up ( Linux works EVERY time)

I have two computers on the SAME test private LAN one Whitehorse (W2003 server) and the other Blackdog (W8 Enterprise) both enabled "Shareable and Visible".

View from W2003 -- can see and access disks C,D, and F on W8 Computer

View from W8 - Networking shows the computer Whitehorse (W2003 server) but can't access any disks etc (or even its printer). PING even fails but W8 obviously knows it's on the Network because its found it. The stupid Windows diagnostics when you click Diagnose doesn't help at all --in fact I've NEVER found the network diagnostic panel of the slightest bit of help ever.

I've switched off firewalls etc while testing so there's no security rubbish to take care of while I'm trying to get this to work. LAN is purely LOCAL -- no computer is on "the other side" of a router.

Both machines can access independently the Internet through a Local router and connections are via LAN cable so nothing should be simpler. !! But can I get this to work !!.

I had a similar problem with W7 but it seemed to "Disappear" without me actually doing anything -- the proverbial "Ghost in the Machine" I expect.

Screenshots enc.

A:W2K3 Server can access W8 W8 computer cant see W2K server

Assuming this Windows 8 Enterprise machine isn't locked down with Group Policy.

This type of problem usually requires that you change the lanman server parameters in order to get Windows 8 working with older servers. Do these adjustments on the Windows 8 machines that needs to connect to the server.

Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy

Local Policies - Security Options

Network security: LAN Manager authentication level
Set to Send LM & NTLM responses only

Set the Minimum session security for NTLM SSP
Disable Require 128-bit encryption

Reboot all machines after making the adjustment.

There are two separate settings for disabling the 128 bit encryption.

My husband and I have several email addresses for our business that were created and hosted by another party using cPanel. Unfortunately we are late in paying our bill and our emails addresses have been shut down. Is there any way to redirect them? Any other advice? We did have access to the cPanel account but looks that was access was changed too. (see attached) If I am able to obtain access again, can I transfer the email addresses somehow?

A:Can I Access Emails If My Server Access Has Been Shut Down?

what was the last part after the @ of the email
why not just pay the bill ?
if ita a domain youu own , then you can transfer to a new provider and they can also host your email - but there will be a hosting / email server charge for you on another host.

Assuming this is all via a domain name, what is your domain name ?
when does the domain name expire?

Who are you hosting with now - is it very expensive?
What country are you in

You will NOT be able to transfer the email address and all the OLD emails , just the email address may be transfered - the emails will stay on the current hosting server , and if you leave it to long , which you may have already done, they will delete all the emails anyway

Hello there,

I'm struggling with networking problems.
I have server 2003 that acts as print server, file server and VPN server.

But after some configuring for the VPN adapter (separate adapter) I can't connect to \\server (that's server real name) anymore.
BUT I can connect with it over IP (, static IP)

So I thought that the VPN adapter is conflicting with some settings and disabled it, and it didn't help.

Server is behind router and I have static IP. Router seems to be configured correctly.
I can ping the server.

What's the problem?

May it be netBIOS problem?

I have a problem to access file server on Windows Server 2000 from a Windows 7 PC. For your information, due to some reasons, both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are in different domain.

I have tried all suggested solutions which are :
i. to unchecked both attributes in 'Network Security : Minimum session security for NTLM SSP based (including secure RPC)' for both clients and server.
ii. to apply 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' in 'Network Security : LAN Manager authentication level'
iii. to make sure the time setting for both Windows 7 and Windows Server 2000 are the same.

But still, i couldn't access the file server. In fact, each time I entered domain\username to authenticate, it will give out this message :

Since I am kinda new to this troubleshooting things, it would be great if someone can tell me why does this happening. Is it because of the different domain?

thanks in advance.

A:Windows 7 unable to Access file server on Windows Server 2000

To connect to the server you would need to enter the credentials of the domain user on the server that would have access. For example if the domain was 'home' with a user 'Josh' then I would put:

As the username. If you want to get advanced you could try and form a trust with the other domain in active directory so that the other domain has permission to access the server

Well, this has been an ongoing problem for a while, and RoadRunner support says "We don't block anything here at RoadRunner", so...here's my problem:

I can't access my server, http://darkangels-rs.com. Only very seldomly can I access the front page, with just the text, no background image and no little person icon that should be there. If I refresh, I get a timeout error. Most of the time, I get a timeout error.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, the site does not load on IE7 or FF2, and I'm using RoadRunner/Time Warner Cable as my ISP (obviously.) I've checked all my trusted sites, restricted sites (unless the IP of the site is blocked, in which case I don't know it, I think it's like 216.something.something.something) and even turned off my firewalls, checked their settings, scanned for adware, spyware, viruses, and the like, reset my modem, repaired my connection, AND turned off google web accelerator, in case they were blocking it, and no dice. Anybody got any ideas?

I hope this is in the correct forum, so here goes. We have opened an ofiice in an old blg, and when we called ATT they said we could get a dsl line! well they made a mistake, so we explored a t1 line to much money. ok the people we rent from have a server, so someone suggested we do a wireless bridge. We are not directly in thair line of sight so is there a way to connect to a server wirelessly from building to building if the connecting bldg is 150 yrds away. Thanks any help would be appreciated or a site for help. There will only be two maybe three computers in use lap tops with docking stations or just lap tops.

oh forgot , we are using att sticks now , but slow and cumbersome also we are not the same company so w its two differant servers. Thanks again.

A:Server access

On the server, install a MIMO router which will have higher radio output.
Mount the router (at the server) near a window that faces your building and
set the SSID to something you and the owner agree upon.

Take a laptop with a WiFi adapter and stand outside your building and verify you can
get a good signal and connect.

Once that works, you get a Wireless Bridge (usually an Access Point configured as a bridge),
like this.

Once it all works (ie your systems have internet access), the MIMO router should have encryption enabled and your Bridge will need the key to connect.

Okay, I'm stumped

I am trying to access a webserver from a PC and the browser tells me the server is down. Tried pinging it and I get a timed out response. nslookup fails to find the server. tried turning the firewall off, tried checking the content setting in the internet options, tried explorer and firefox. all with no luck. The user can email people at the site without any problems. The workstation can access pretty much any other server

I know the server I am trying to access is up and running because if I go down the street to another computer, I can browse the site and ping the address with no problems. Not only that, the site has around 500 subscribers and no-one else hase any problems.

There is something weird going on here. Any thoughts would be good. I am running Spybot on the workstation at the moment but have no real hope that it will turn up anything.

Workstation is a pentium 4 running Windows XP from a small office using a Seimens Speedstream modem.

A:I can't access my Web server from my pc?

Hi and welcome to the forums, your log which you have submitted here is now in the process of being analyzed, some logs take longer than others depending on the type of infection. As I am currently at undergrad status all my post are verified before final posting so this may also cause a short delay in the final post. Please be patient and I will get back to you as soon as I can

While you are wating for your reply please note...

Do not try and fix any entries that you see yourself (even if they do seem very obvious) If you do so the fix may not work as it should, leaving you open to possible immediate re-infection.

Do not disable your system restore - an infected/corrupted system restore is better than none at all, if anything should go wrong during the fix and restore is turned off then you could well be looking at a full system format

Please do not post in other forums while you are being helped here This is so the HJT helpers at other forums can get on with helping other users that are in need of attention.

If you are at anytime in doubt, or unsure of anything then please ask ! Dont be frightened - we wont bite....

Many Thanks - Dorian - AkA Steve

We are running Windows 2000 Server. On the server is a Q: drive called 'Public'. 'Public''s permission is set to 'Everyone' with full-control. The employees and I can access the Public folder through My Network Places (most people have Win XP Pro) or through the run command, \\server\public.

Here's the problem. One person does not have access. She always did have access to the Public folder, but not anymore. I can access my PC (which is \\networkid) through her PC (\\popc). However, I cannot access \\server through \\popc. What is the problem? How come mine cannot see hers, but she can see mine? Me and everyone else can see the server, but not her.

Through her PC (\\popc), I type 'ping networkid' and I get replies. However, I type 'ping server' but there is no reply.

Any suggestions? I would love to get out of this funk!

Hi All, I had the same error (Access Denied on this server) on several websites. Tried all the solutions offered here, to no avail.

Finally discovered that our fixed IP that we just got (new office, new ISP), had been blacklisted on all the big blacklisting services. So a quick call to our ISP and a new fixed IP and I'm able to access all sites again. FYI, the two sites we knew about that couldn't be accessed were www.expedia.com and www.dhl.com and www.dhl.cz.

So if you find yourself in a similar spot, I hope this info helps!

A:Access Denied on this server

Just make sure all of your computers have been tested for viruses or you may find yourself blacklisted again.

First, don't create duplicate threads.

Second, why would you want to access Facebook from a server which is supposed to be doing other more critical functions?

Hi Folks,

I've got four computers networked together via ethernet and a router. One computer is designated as the "server" and all the important files are stored on it. The other computers access the files on the server.

I recently replaced the server with a brand new PC - P4 3 GHZ, 1 GB of RAM.

The server is XP Pro, the other machines are either XP Pro or home.

When the workstations open an existing file from the server, they often have to wait 20 or more seconds while the PC gathers the contents of the directory to display it. A similar problem: when a wordperfect document residing on the server is opened from a workstation, and the user attempts to highlight a large block of text, the hourglass appears, and once again, 20 or more seconds can go by before they are able to complete the operation.

My users understandably find this maddening. They never had this problem before when the file were served on an ancient PIII running NT2000.

Is there a way to speed up the network connection to the server and make it behave more efficiently?

Any insight, suggestions, advice and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Windows 7 client cannot connect to Apple OS 10.2.8 server on our LAN.

A new Windows 7 (PRO) computer was able to connect to our old MAC file server (G4 OS X 10.2.8) over our LAN, but suddenly it will not allow access. We had a shortcut on the desktop and could access files just fine, but then it stopped allowing access (possibly after an WIN 7 update??). I can see the MAC server under Network Connections, click on it and see the group folder we normally connect to, but get this error message when I try to access the folder:
“The server \\ourserver\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. The specified server is not available.”

The Win 7 box can ping the MAC server just fine.
Multiple Windows XP computers connect to and access files on this MAC server with no problems and have done so for years.

All the PC’s on our LAN are in the workgroup “WORKGROUP”. We do not have a Domain.

The MAC server is set with a single group with members that have usernames and passwords. I even set up a new username and password on the MAC server to match the username and password of the user (admin privileges) on the Windows 7 machine. (BTW, I can connect with that new username and password from all our XP machines.)

As far as tweaking settings on this Win 7 machine, I want to be prudent since the machine is correctly connecting to a SQL database running on a Windows 2003 server (using Windows authentication). The Win 7 machine has ODBC by way of “... Read more

Here's my setup:
I've got a cable modem that's connected to the internet and to my router. Connected to my router I have a laptop (wifi) and two desktops - my server and my desktop. My router is set to forward all ports to my server.

When I ask other people to try and access my public IP or my domain name (http://zoklet.net/) from outside of my network, they are able to get there with no problem. When I try to access the server from within the network with its my external IP or domain name, the connection times out. I *can* access my server if I use the local IP (192.168...).

Obviously, I would like to be able to access my server from inside the network with my external IP or domain name. I know I can just edit /etc/hosts and add a line for my server, but I don't want to have to do that for each computer that connects to my network.

My router is a Netgear WGR614 v6 and my modem is a Motorola Surfboard.

Any help, please?

I am currently hosting an Access Database on an External server to my company for geographical considerations. I would like to evaluate what it would take to host it internally. We are a very small office that have 4 PCs with 2 Printers shared through a windows Homegroup but personel at other office locations need to access the DB and they are not on the homegroup. I am not averse to setting up a server however I am not sure what would be the best way to proceed. Also I have no server experience to speak of. I have Mostly a Desktop support background. I could use some advice or point me to a resource.

Thank you for your assistance in advance.

Prabin Karki, welcome to the windows 7 forum,

I would not recommend duplicating your problem in more than one topic.

It will most likely get you ignored.

You might want to read up on IIS which is internet information server included with advanced versions of windows.

Hi all!

I apologize if I post this to the wrong forum. I'm new here.

I have tried to illustrate my WLAN/LAN/Internet situation:

I am looking for ways to access
(1) my (own) web server (with IIS 6/Apache) (HTTP)
(2) my IP/Network cam (RTSP)

from my smartphone (3) from "Internet". I am a .NET-system developer but my networking skills are very poor.
My problem is that there are obstacles, i e an evil firewall (4). Since my web server (1) and IP/Network (2) cam are behind it (4), I have absolutely no idea how to access them from my smart phone (3) from Internet.
My ISP doesn't allow port forwarding, but I know that there is a Socks5 server which I can reach @port 1080. I believe that I can use it somehow?

My question:
Is it possible to reach my web server at all from outside the firewall? How? Are there any other solutions for me except for changing my ISP?

With best regards,

I put together a network using a cable modem and a linksys router. There are three computers on the network, one is XP, one is NT 6, and the other is NT 4 Server. I setup NetBuie on all the computers and I also set TCP/IP.
The internet is working, but that has nothing do with the computers talking to one another. The thing that I dont understand is that I able to ping into all the computers from each computer, but when I go to access a computer from the Network Neighborhood, no computers are found.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I am attending a University that uses the Cisco Clean Access Agent to authenticate and check students computers for possible viruses and other problems. I have set up a netgear wireless router and now the computers using the router are incapable of accessing the cleanaccess server but the university network is demanding that they log in to the server. Is this a router problem, a university problem or what?

A:Clean Access Server

Welcome, photographer.

It sounds to me like it's your problem.

If you can find such a person, discuss this with somebody who understands the server's needs and how a router works.

I can understand their server not being able to access your computers hiding behind the router's firewall, but your computers' inability to access the server is beyond me. Unless the login process is tied in with the server trying to access the computer doing the login.

I suggest that you disable the router's firewall, and see if this makes a difference. If this permits the login/access then you may be able to still use the firewall by opening whatever port(s) the server requires.

If disabling the firewall doesn't work, the problem may be IP based. The IP address that the server would be seeing is whatever the network assigned, which is the router's WAN or Internet address; and your computers have addresses like 192.168.n.x. Don't know how to get around this, which leads back to my main suggestion--find somebody who understands both ends. Good luck, and let us know how this progresses. This is a new situation for me, and I'm here to learn.

Work laptop yesterday evening disallowed me from accessing web pages. After seeing the connection was to the network was strong, but the connection to the internet was non-existant, I troubleshot the problems with Windows Network Diagnostics. It's answer was to: Power cycle the modem/router (didn't work), get new ip setting for the network adapter (didn't work), and reset the network adapter (didn't work either.)

In CMD I've tried ipconfig/flushdns and ipconfig/registerdns, with no prevail. I'm at a loss as we don't have an IT department and my boss is not tech savy one bit.

I've included my ipconfig/all report below:

Running Win 2003 server, DHCP and DNS, with 180 computers logging into our domain. We primarily are using Win XP Pro, but want to replace some laptops but with Win 7 platform. I have received some ambiguous answers, but will Windows 7 allow me to log into the Win 2003 domain and receive DHCP and DNs? Many thanks!

A:Win 7 access to 2003 server

Yes, assuming you are talking about a version of 7 that has domain abilities. ANy issues you may come across are most likley related to IPV6 and your network configuration rather than the OS itself. I am typing this on a Win 7 Enterprise workstation ona 2003 domain getting my DNS and DHCP address just fine.

I have a brand new computer and have a takeover on the desktop already (an ad saying to 'Resell on the reseller marketplace on eBay) .... I was trying to remove this by using hijackthis & deleted 2 files. Now, when I open Outlook Express, it can't/won't connect to the server... just times out continuously.

These are the files I deleted.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: igfxcui - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\igfxdev.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WgaLogon.dll

Of course, the ad is still present & now my email won't work. I should not have messed around with hijackthis as I know VERY little about it. Could someone please help???
