Processor:   AMD64 Turion Turbo
OS: Windows XP Professional

Will it run Smoothly on my Dell Inspiron 1721 or will it run Crappy and Slow ?

Preferred Solution: Will Windows 8 work on a Dell Inspiron 1721?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Again,

Most of you know and remember me from the Dell Inspiron 1721 problem installing Windows 7. I was successfully able to install 64 bit Windows 7 after working around some things, but now I have a new question.

I have a AMD Truion 64x2 processor and currently running 3 gigs of ram, (2.75) usable. My question is...

How much ram can my 64bit laptop recognize and use?

Would like to know before I buy more ram.

A:Dell Inspiron 1721

Since you are running a 32bit OS, your OS can recognize all the 3 GB RAM. If you add one more gig, it may not recognize as 4 GB. Instead, it will recognize
Total RAM-Video RAM.
For ex: If you install 4 GB RAM and you have a 512MB Graphics card, it will recognize 3.5GB RAM.

Hey guys/gals. Thanks for looking and any help would be great. Here's what's going on. I was playing an online MMORPG the other game and I hit Alt+Tab to switch to my Windows screen and when I did the monitor went black. At first I thought it was some kind of windows glitch so I manually forced the power down via hold the power button. I tried to turn the computer back on and it showed the first main loading screen, not the WIndows screen just the computer loading screen. But when it went past that, nothing. The screen was just black. So I forced the power down again. When I turned it back on, nothing loads. I get the blue light on the side that shows the power is on and the blue light showing the bluetooth adapter card is on. The light that comes on when it's reading from the hard drive comes on for a couple of seconds then goes off like it normally did until after the loading screen. The fan comes on and runs but the loading screen doesnt come up, the hard drives are being read. And as far as I can tell, then monitor isn't just black, it's not even coming on. I've taken it apart and cleaned it as best as I could and still nothing. I removed both hard drives, nothing. I removed the RAM chip, nothing. Any ideas?

A:Dell Inspiron 1721 went black, won't turn on

Disconnecting any externals (including network)
Removing the laptop main large battery
Removing the power adapter cord
Re-seating the Ram (or even just leaving 1 Ram card in only, for the moment)
Re-seating the Hard Drive
Then with all power out still. Hold down the ON button for 20secs
Plug the powered, power cord back in
Turn On
Did it work? If so, then turn back off (or shutdown if Windows loaded)
And refit the extra Ram card (if removed) and refit the main battery
Turn back on again, and you're good to go.

Hello !

About two weeks ago, my girlfriend's laptop (Dell Inspiron 1721) running 7 x64 had the mouse poorly responding. Right after the boot, swiping on the touchpad barely moved it on the screen...just inch by inch...
The system loads fine, if I press the Windows key for example it reacts immediately. The same goes if I connect an usb mouse; there, I can move it fine. After a while (from 5 minutes to an hour !) the touchpad will get responsive again.
The problem occurs again when I wake up the system from sleep, although it sometimes doesn't.

So after searching for a program interfering with the mouse, I decided to format the all thing. It seemed to work fine as I was reinstalling everything. Then I decided to apply Windows 7 updates. And bam, at the next reboot, the problem again.
To me, it must be related to a Windows 7 update that messes everything. I really doubt it's a program as I barely reinstalled them, only classic stuffs that are not responsible as they were installed when things were fine (you know, Firefox, Comodo, Ashampoo, etc.). I'm trying to uninstall updates one by one but while uninstalling them does fix the issue, it's there again when I reboot.

What should I do ? I know, I could format again but, if it's probably what I'm going to do, I would like to know if it happened to someone before and if we can identify the issue...

Thanks !

well guys, i was trying to clean up my laptop as id just bought a new external hd and went about it by trying to do the dell factory inage restore to restore it to its original settings an totally flush my hd of lose programs eg.
i got a error message when doin that so tried again to no avail. then my system couldnt boot up by the intial dell boot scree. i got worried so put my vista disc in to boot from that fearin some files had been corrupted. but it says that i cannot detect my hard drives or more accurtaly that there are no drivers for them.
i got the sata drivers form the dell web but they were no good.
i called tech support, they know of this problem ( its rife in 1500 and 1700 model laptops)
apparently they can easily fix it but at a massive cost to me. which i think is bs as i was just following their instructions to clean up my computer.

please can someone help with this before i have to pay those douches for whats seems to be a inbuilt fault to squeeze cash outta computer illiterate chumps like me

Is XP Pro compatible with the Audio Device in a Dell INSPIRON 1721? For the record I hate VISTA, so when I had VISTA Windows Explorer totally lock up three times in one evening recently, I grabbed a new XP Pro CD that I had purchased recently, reformatted the hard drive, and I installed Windows XP Pro. It installed just fine, however I did forget to set up the hard drive for the Dell MediaDirect 3.3 (which has to be done just prior to installing the OS), but I figured I did not have to install that. That program and a separate button left of the power button, enables your laptop to be used like a DVD player without booting to Windows first, which is something I rarely do. So I proceeded one by one to install the drivers, and everything worked EXCEPT the sound. I tried several audio drivers from DELL, most of which I got the error: wrong driver for your hardware. Finally one of the drivers designed for XP installed, but I still had no sound. Then I found a Vista driver that installed, but still no sound.

I have a program called PC Wizard 2010 that identifies the name of your specific hardware componants and it says my Audio Device is a: ATI Technologies SB600 High Definition Audio Controller. DELL Driver Downloads say that the driver R171786 - SIGMATEL STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio but it obviously failed because it was designed for VISTA. Others that failed to install were: R160062, R167846, and R94481. Two drivers that I tried did install but failed to be the right one for my ... Read more

Greetings. Hoping someone can help with reformatting a Dell Inspiron 1721; 3 GB RAM; 250 GB HDD; Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core 1.9 GHz processor; Vista Home Premium 32 bit OS.

Reformatted and clean install of Vista 2 months ago. Afterward, everything worked perfectly until a couple of weeks ago. After automatic updates installed Vista SP2, suddenly Windows Media Center (which I've never used and am not at all familiar with and have no plans to learn it and use it in the future) began opening by itself over and over.

Also, a little window popped up on boot up that said something to the effect that my new hardware needed intalled; however, I have not added any new hardware. Have no idea what it was trying to install.

Also, intermittently, programs I'm using just exit out even though I have not pressed exit. And, the mouse intermittently jumps around by itself or won't respond to the touchpad - - it opens programs, opens the start menu, types gibberish into the 'Start Search' line, closes programs, opens browsers or browser tabs, closes browser tabs, etc, etc, etc.

Also, sometimes an odd looking exit menu appears top left screen in a different resolution than the screen is set at. AND, sometimes, when I'm working, all of a sudden the keys won't type but the computer issues a loud beep every time a key is pressed.

When problems first started, I immediately ran system restore. No change.
Tried another date in system restore. Still no change.
Went through all restore points and... Read more

Hi Sharon.

If your game then so am I.

All the things you stated sound like a possible infection or operating system corruption due to unknown reasons. Although none, or a questionable one, was found. I am in total agreement with Garmanma. Also the fact that the rootkit scan is disabled in AVG causes me some concern.

Seems you already have a pretty good idea how to format the drive and reinstall your OS and drivers....... But would like to take it one step further in this case though. I would like to have you wipe the entire hard drive to zeroes prior to formatting and installing the OS. This would include what is called the MBR = Master Boot Record, the partition the OS is on as well as the restore partition. Of course this would leave you only the option of reinstalling via the CD. All pre-installed software will be gone for good. Complete restore CDs are usually available from the OEM for a nominal cost.

The only reason I suggest this manner is, 1)The problems you are describing does somewhat resemble infection symptoms. 2)Depending on the possible infection type a simple reformat may not get rid of it. I have also read that it is possible for the restore partition can become infected as well.

The procedures are really pretty easy, the program(s) to wipe the drive to zeroes is free and we will do our best to get you through the whole procedure as painlessly as possible.

Let me know what you decide.

Hi, I've just reformatted my Inspiron N5010 laptop, reinstalled WIndows 7 and now my Wifi doesnt work. Been trolling through the web I believe the issue here is with the driver as the attachment in Device Manager. I tried clicking on Software Update but it could not find the anything online. I tried to use Dell System Detect but it says format issue until I found a post in this forum stating to install Microsoft Net Framework. Title of post is Dell System Detect (DSD) launch error. It seems to have installed but when I run DSD nothing pops up. I was hoping DSD can help me identify the right driver. No Power, bottom line.

I had some issues trying to get it going as I have the flu and no patience so gave up. Went to turn on this morning and it wouldn't turn on. Charged all day, no go. Removed and put back in the Memory, Hard Drive and that is where I am.

When I hit the power button, first the power light turns on or a couple seconds, then (click) and the battery light goes on for a couple seconds then nothing.

When the power cord is plugged in (with and without battery attached) there is no "charge" light that comes on, and can't recall if one ever did... anyone recall? The light on the charger box is green though.

I've tried with battery out, memory and WLAN out and plugged in an just nothing... Also did Windows Update as well a couple days ago when it did work.

At this point I'm thinking its the charger? But it hasn't been used in years, so why all of a sudden would it not charge? Plus those 2 lights pop on for a second then shuts the computer off. I don't know how much cords are these days, but for a "toy" computer (like to take in yard and read/play games etc or a movie, the screen is AMAZING! Soooo. Opinions? Willing to try anything, just extremely broke now, and can't take into the shop to fix. I have 2 perfectly good other computers to use, I just want my "Pinky" back!!! Thank you!!

Hello all
I'm running an Inspiron 1721 with the following spec:
2x AMD 64 (2GHz) and 320GB 5400RPM SERIAL ATA RAID 0 STRIPE
I'm currently running 32-bit Windows Vista and I'm trying to custom install to Windows 7 32-bit. All system requirements have been met however, the following issue occurs every time I try to install. I have tried installing from CD and from a USB boot but I get the same issue each time:
Upgrade install: when checking compatability the system asks me to upgrade the drivers for my SATA RAID controller. When I try to upgrade the drivers,Vista informs me that they are up to date, so I can't go anywhere with it.
Custom install: as a direct result of not being able to use the drivers for my RAID controller, Windows 7 cannot see any of my drives and so I am unable to install the new OS.
I have tried customer support who have been 100% useless, and I'm left wondering why the hell I paid out loads of money for a 4 year extended support warranty on my laptop.
Can anyone help me?

A:Problems installing W7 32-bit on Inspiron 1721

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
Dell has no Win 7 drivers for this system. What is happening is it needs a SATA driver. To get around this try booting into the system bios and change SATA Operation to ATA or AHCI. Whatever it is not set to. Save the changes and then try installing Windows 7. Once it is installed go back and change this setting back. Let me know if this resolves your issue.

I had to replace the mother board on mine. It sounds like yours is doing the same thing mine did, I would suggest replacing it yourself if possible or if you are unable to find someone who can it is very easy to replace. Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.
I hope this helps
You can find the mother board online for about $150 and 20 for a DVD Rom Drive

I have replaced the hard drives with new blank ones, but I cannot now reinstall Vista from the Reinstallation DVD because no drives are seen.
I have updated the BIOS to the latest available version, but still no joy.
I have taken out the drives and, using an external HDD port, can access them from another PC, so I'm certain there's no issues with the drives themselves.
I've tried Paragon 2010 Suite, but even that cannot "see" the drives, so I'm deducing that it's an issue peculiar to this Dell model.
I would be grateful for any advice.

I have a Dell inspiron 1721 that was rolled back to xp. Everything on the computer worked fine up until the 11th or 12h of this month. The computer froze completely and had to be restarted. When it came back up it said that a registry key had gone missing (or something along those lines) and had been restored by a backup copy. Ever since that day, I keep getting that same error message every time the machine starts up.

Second problem:

I tried to use my webcam yesterday, but it came up with an error saying Fatal Error "Load Failed!" followed by the "LiveCam.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close yadda yadda yadda.."

The details of the error are as follows:

AppName: livecamde.exe AppVer: ModName: livecamde.exe
ModVer: Offset: 0000d8de

I thought it was a problem with the drivers so I downloaded one from Dell "r173082" which said it was for the 1721 XP webcam, but nothing has changed. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the matter with it?
Third problem:

Firefox has been running agonizingly slow lately, especially over the past two days. I did have a few windows open, but definitely not the most I've ever had open at one time, yet I've never seen it run so slow. The problem seems to come and go though, like right after a restart, firefox is just impossible to use. Right now it seems normal, but signing up for this forum took me over half an hour! Gmail doesn't like the slowness either. Any... Read more

Has anyone tried running OpenSuSE 10.3 x86_64 on a Dell 1721? I had OpenSuSE 10.2 x86_64 running for a few months but I got sick and tired of the system locking up several times a day. I thought an upgrade to OpenSuSE 10.3 x86_64 might resolve some of those lock-ups but my system seems to be more unstable than before.

I have noticed that sometimes I get the "9" led (num lock) and "A" led (cap lock) flashing during a lock up. I have contacted Dell but their response was that I needed to load Vista on my machine. Yeah right.

I have heard through the grape-vine that Dell has had some significant problems with the AMD product line. Does anyone know if this is true and if so, what is the most common problem?

A:Dell 1721 woes

I ran the Dell diags and everything passed. I did notice that the diags ran 32 bit mode instead of 64 bit mode. I am not as familiar with PC diags and their ability to catch intermittent problems. Most of the time the system runs without issue . At other times it can lock up 3 times in 30 minutes. I fear that taking it to someone to run an hour of diags on it will turn up nothing.

Well food for thought.

My Inspiron 660 version is with Core i5 3330 and 8GB RAM.
The BIOS is UEFI version 2.7.
My question is simple, will a GTX 960 work on this PC? (I already have upgraded the PSU, so no issue there, and it is a 6.7-inch card, so it will fit no issue)
I am just worried about the BIOS compatibility.
Hopefully someone can help me out.

A:Will a GTX 960 work on a Dell Inspiron 660?

BIOS incompatibility with video cards is usually a problem with much older computers. If there is a problem, update the bios. Make sure the card is in the first slot and that the secondary power cord(s) are plugged in. Most of these cards actually need two 6-pin power cords. Does your new supply have enough amps for the card?
If there is a problem, you can try resetting the BIOS/CMOS memory by removing and installing the system board battery; leave out for 10 seconds or so. You could also have a problem with the BIOS Safe Boot feature. Safe Boot protects the computer from changes in configuration, such as BIOS viruses or hardware changes. You might need to deactivate Safe Boot, restart the 660 and then restart Safe Boot.

I think there is a combo webcam microphone built-in.  The microphone will not work.  I have checked all the settings - everything is turned on, volume is up - have rebooted, checked drivers, etc. etc.  No luck whatsoever.

A:Dell Inspiron 15 microphone does not work

Hello.Re-install your audio driver. Next, go to the Recording tab of the Sound properties -- right click on the audio icon on the taskbar (path will be different if you have Win8)

and then right click on the blank white area and in the context menu select to show both "disconnected" and "disabled" devices.
If "microphone array" or "internal mic" shows up then select it as the default recording device.
If you still don't get "mic array" then open the Dell Webcam Central program that should be on your computer and click on the mic icon (it is hard to see -- look to the right of the camera icon) and see if you can start the mic array from there. Note that if Webcam Central says "Plug in a supported device" then either you don't have a webcam or it is not working.
If still no luck then the mic array might have become disconnected. Contact tech support to schedule a repair if you are under warranty. http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellcare/en/contact_technical_support?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&DoNotRedirect=y

Basically I'm 19, I live on my own, and whilst I know the basics about laptops I aren't at all genius' like the lot of you. I've tried to read through some of the posts and find it really difficult so if anyone knows the answer to my problem please try to pretend you're talking to an alien and give it in simple terms.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 that is about a month out of warranty so Dell won't help. It came up with an error about two weeks ago saying Time And Date Clock Stopped or something very similar. I took it to a local technician who changed the clock battery or something like that. It was a tiny circle thing. It worked for a couple hours and then went dead and wouldn't do anything at all. Wouldn't turn on or light up or anything. They then said they had forgot to attach the switch that goes under the keyboard that it needs to turn back on so I went back and he reattached the clip, but still it doesn't work.

My friends baby crawled on top of the laptop when the lid was down and hey presto it worked again! Then a few days later the same happened and it just won't turn on. Could something be loose? Or is it just dead? My local technician says it might be the motherboard? I don't understand why it would work after a baby had sat on it, surely it means something clicked in to place?

I put the charger in and I know it works but the light on the laptop that should come on to say its charging stays off.... Read more

Hello, I hope someone on here can help me with this issue. Ok here it goes... I just bought this used laptop. I bought it so I could speak to friends & family on Skype. Before buying the laptop the previous owner was attempting to connect to his wireless internet connection & it would pick up the signal and then loose the internet connection. The computer seemed as if it would freeze for a few seconds when attempting to open up the Internet Explorer browser. The screen was blank and a swirling circle would show next to the pointer. Seemed as it was a bad internet connection or at least that's what he told me. After a few tries we got it connected to the internet and I bought it.

I assumed Internet Explorer 8 was crappy so I downloaded Google Chrome. The speed on the laptop really picked up and it rarely gave me any slow or freezing issues only when I used Google Chrome.

NOW... I downloaded Skype and soon after I tried using it as the laptop comes with an integrated camera. When I double click the Skype Icon on my desktop the Skype window opens for a second and closes immediately. I have to try and open the program 2 to 4 times for Skype to open and get me to the sign in section. Once signed in I attempt to add contacts & not even 5 seconds into it the program freezes. My laptop is Dell Inspiron 15R - 7520 (Mid 2010)
After upgrading to Windows 10 and do a clean install after that, I let my laptop update all drivers from Windows Update. Then I go to Dell support page to download any missing driver. Finally, there is no unregconized driver in Device Manager.

However, "Hey Cortana" feature is not working with the microphone. (I have turned on Hey Cortana in Cortana Settings). The microphone still works well with Skype. It also works well if I click the microphone icon next to "Ask me anything" in Cortana textbox.

Anyone knows how to make "Hey Cortana" works? Is it because of the Conexant driver is Windows 8.1 version, not Windows 10?

A:Dell Inspiron 15R - 7520: Hey Cortana does not work

I have the same problem, except that it doesn`t work for me when I click the microphone icon in the Cortana textbox. It seems to listen for a second, but then it jumps to the suggestions like I didn`t say anything. I have the audio drivers for Windows 10 from the Dell support page. My voice works fine on Skype and Voice Recorder, though.

Please let us know if there is any progress.

A:Can a Dell inspiron 3000 work with a GTX960?

As it is configured no.  You would first need to upgrade the PSU to at least 450W or higher. Another issue is will it fit and that i'm not 100 percent sure.

Hi, Im upgrading my CPU and  want to know if it's possible to use the Xeon 1231v3 in the Inspiron 3847.  My current CPU is i3-4150.

A:Will Xeon 1231v3 work in Dell Inspiron 3847?

Doubtful.  The BIOS probably isn't programmed to accept it and i'm not sure the chipset is capable of utilizing a Xeon.  Xeon processors generally use business or industrial class chipsets from intel

A:dell inspiron n5110 fans work non stop!

If you've never done so, remove the heatsink fan assembly and clean it thoroughly - and replace the thermal pads that sit between the GPU/CPU and heatsink assembly.
Unfortunately due to the design of this model, it's a major undertaking - see the service manual for the procedure, which includes removing the system board.  You may want to leave the job to a shop - expect about an hour's labor charge, whatever that costs where you're located.

I recently bought Dell Inspiron 14R N4110, which came only one default partition (C:\) with Windows 7 Home Premium.
But later on, I did one more partition (D:\), and I installed all drivers(which comes with Dell laptop). but some how my internet is not working properly. Sometime its too slow and not connecting.

I reformatted the laptop, and Restored the modem/router to factory defaults (in that order) neither helped. But if I restored my laptop to factory default (which I don't want, because it has only one partition C:\ ), than everything works fine. Why its happen ?

I hope that you people will be a big help.
I greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you.

Weilcome to SevenForums.

Please complete your System Specs.

Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
?system manufacturer? block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

From your post, I'm confused.

The problem does or does not exist?

If problem exists, then:
WIN + X keycombo | in the Wireless Network section, if you see Turn wireless on, then click on Turn Wireless on. | ALT + F4 to close the window

WIN=key with microsoft logo on top.

For background, some Dell laptops have a feature where they use a low-powered intel graphics card when undemanding applications are running, but they switch to a high-power, high-wattage graphics card (AMD Radeon series) when demanding games are running. With the AMD/Intel version of this, it is a very fragile configuration and you can't download any old version of the drivers and expect them to work. Dell engineers have to specificaly craft a version of the intell driver installers that is compatible with this configuration.
Automatic driver/windows updates and OS changes can trounce on this delicate configuration and you're at the mercy of the Dell support people about when you'll get an updated driver. If you just use the vanilla Intel video drivers, they won't respect the AMD wish to take control of graphics and the AMD video card will sit unused in your laptop.
There are three parts to getting Windows to use your preferred driver for the hardware, one is removing any installed software that provides drivers. This is done by uninstalling all software that puts drivers on the hard drive. The second step is to delete any drivers that windows is pegged against because Windows will not allow drivers it is using to be fully uninstalled. This is done by putting Windows into "safe mode" where it does not use most drivers and then uninstalling and deleting the driver files themselves. the final step is installing your preferred drivers, both the AMD and ... Hi...I'm not sure where to put this request, thought since the Dell Inspiron 15 is running Windows 10 (including latest update) that there might be a conflict between the desktop and the keyboard down in the nuts and bolts somewhere. I can turn the machine on, the capslock light comes on, SOMETIMES the keyboard works well enough to input the pin to get the desktop booted up. Sometimes I have to go through steps to get the touch screen keyboard up in order to input the pin. However, as soon as the desktop is active, the keyboard no longer works. I've updated the drivers, don't know what else to do. When I try a search online for a solution, I get differing ideas on how to solve the problem. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, that didn't work. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I really need the keyboard to be working, my kids do their homework on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I've notice that the keyboard autolock does only work when i fold the computer into a full tablet mode.
It's just me or there is anyone there with the same problem? Have anyone any idea about it?

A:dell inspiron 13 7000 2 in 1, auto lock keyboard does not work

Yep, this is happening with me too. Extremely frustrating when I have the screen pushed back so the keyboard is on my lap (usually playing games with a gamepad) - this means I can push all sorts of keys and use the trackpad!
My laptop is also not auto-rotating when in 'tent mode' OR full tablet mode! AGH!

My old man's best friend divorced his wife a few years ago. She left a bunch of her stuff at his house. He has repeatedly asked her to come get her stuff & she refuses everytime. Since he bought it, he has the right to do whatever he wants with it. So instead of pawning it he gave it to my daughter for school work. She was so secretive around the time she left, that he doesn't know any of her passwords. It's stuck on the gmail/microsoft password login. He does have the admin password, but that doesn't seem to help at all. Is there anyway at all for me to access the advanced boot options without F8? I've tried F2 Which takes me set up & F12 which takes me to boot options. They both do not have the options for advanced boot options. Is there any hope for us to save this laptop. It's kinda old, but my daughter really loves it.
