Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

Q: Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

This machine is not connected to a domain. It is in a homeoffice workgroup with full local admin rights. The feature updates 1607 and 1703 will not install during Windows Update. They fail constantly. I tried downloading the standalone installers for them but they fail as well stating that they are "not applicable to this computer". I even downloaded the standalone installer for creator update 1709, which had not yet shown up in the customers Windows Update just see if it would work and it failed with the same message as well. I've uninstalled the antivirus and tried the Windows Update reset procedures outlined on Microsoft support help article 971058 but same issue. Before resorting to reinstalling Windows I was hoping maybe someone here could shed some light on the situation. As a sidenote, all other Windows updates work fine. Its just those 3 that fail.I know this is primarily a hardware forum but I posted here to confirm a claim from a tech who responded to this question when I posted it on Reddit claiming these creator updates were not compatible with these Dells which makes no sense to me.
Thanks in advance,
Adam

Preferred Solution: Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Dell Optiplex 3040 with Win10 Pro - Creator Update 1607 and 1703 will not install

A general comment. The Windows version you have may be an issue. Its not that its not compatible with Dell, its that some updates will not install on Enterprise versions as they leave it up to the corporate IT department on when/if they want to implement the updates on corporate systems.
Considering you have an OptiPlex (one of Dell's business system lines) this may be the case.

I've replaced HDD with NVMe PCI SSD, and was able to successfully install and run Windows 10 using Dell-provided installation media image. However, the image is a bit old: mid-2016 Windows installer, plus AU update included separately, then the installed OS updates itself to CU 1703 version. Not sure for what gain of performance I was hoping, but I decided to try to clean-install the latest 1703 image downloaded directly from Microsoft. Installer can't see the SSD and asks for a driver -- the situation described on numerios web pages I've read since. The Intel Rapid Storage drivers -- (1) latest from Intel or (2) from Dell support page or (3) older version from Dell Windows installation image -- were all rejected. I.e. installer says there's no appropriate driver in all these locations.I flashed the latest BIOS. Tried AHCI and Raid settings. Other settings are UEFI Boot, Secure Boot and no Legacy ROM -- that's the way I want them. And besides they are OK for Dell installation image. The SSD is clean i.e. no partitions. So, is there any hope to clean-install 1703 version? Or do I have to run install and update, again, from Dell image?

It sounds like the creators update your system has cached might be corrupted. Go back to Win 10 home and, before updating, completely reset Windows update. See here - https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/24742-reset-windows-update-windows-10-a.html

So I recently got a Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF for a good deal. It came with an i5 6500, 1TB HDD and a Single Stick of 8GB DDR3L. I've been reading the specs for the Optiplex 3000 series and they just came with an i5. I was just wondering if it's ok to replace the CPU with an i7 6700 non K, since i have one just lying around. I'm also planning on adding a low profile GTX 1050Ti (Msi probably) Will the 180W PSU that came with the computer support those upgrades?

I've disconnected default SSD (Samsung) in order to connect new emty SSD (Transcend). I was in need to clone my laptop's HDD on this new SSD as a transit SATA port, because I've got only one SATA to USB connector, used by laptop's drive. I've successfully cloned my drives, disconnected all new drives, connected default SSD (samsung) and - no OS boot. I've not changed ANY BIOS settings.
Ok. I've a look on BIOS settings, and I see NEW (almost disconnected) SSD (Transcend) as bootable device. And NO Samsung SSD in boot device. Only Transcend which is no more connecned to motherboard. In SATA I see only Samsung SSD connecned, but I don't see it in BOOT section.
I've restored to factory and than to default settings with no effect. Than I've cleared CMOS - no effect. I see disconnected SSD device in BIOS BOOT section. What I'm doing wrong?

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 SFF

I've changed firmware of my BIOS. Downgraded it up ti 1.2.3 version, than upgraded it again. No effect. Old SSD doesn't appear. BUT in Legacy boot disconnected drive is still present. I cannot delete it. cannot change it to connected SSD drive. I guess it's somewhere in Legacy Option ROMS, and must be changed - but there are no options in this BIOS section. I'm gonna hate UEFI

What do I need to replace for 1703, or will I need a replacement computer? As all ways limited budget, so looking for the cheapest way forward. I would prefer not to have go back to Win 7.
Hope someone can give me some advice on this problem.

have recently taken delivery of 150 Dell Optiplex 3040 PC's all with the same specification.
I am trying to image then using MDT.
Before taking delivery of all the PC's I took a sample of 2 to test with to make sure I could create an image and deploy it. This worked without any problem using Litetouch and a defined sequence. Happy days.
I then took delivery of the remaining PC's and tried to apply the same image. However this fails on every PC I have tried apart from the initial 2 samples and it is driving me crazy. PC spec is identical for all PC's and there is only one W10 cab available from Dell that I am using for drivers.
I get a black screen  stating
windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.
Status Oxc000001
A required device is not connected or can't be accessed.
This happens as the process seems to be connecting to the Litetouch image so I think it might be a possible NIC issue, even though it does successfully connect to the WDS deployment server.
Any suggestions?

Hello
I am using MDT 2013.  I've imported the driver pack for the OptiPlex 3040 from Dell for Windows 7 x64.  After MDT installs the OS, it reboots into Windows to begin initialization but it never finishes.  Instead it reboots again and goes into the Dell Diagnostics utility and runs a test on memory.
After the test runs, it tries to boot into Windows and I end up selecting "last know good config."  It finally loads windows but then none of the USB ports work.  I have to remote into the pc to manually install the USB and chipset drivers to finish the MDT deployment process.  This has happened on multiple machines and is a repeatable process.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Hi there,
I've got a Dell Optiplex 3040 in my workshop at the moment. The computer seems to turn on: there's a light on the PSU, the HDD indicator flashes, the num lock toggles on and off and the traffic light on the ethernet port is active. However, there's no output from the HDMI port or the display port. The machine only has onboard graphics.
I'm thinking that the onboard graphics are at fault, but I don't have a graphics card that will fit in with the PSU in it's current location.
Any ideas for fixes on this? Thanks in advance!

Supports optional discrete graphics (MT/SFF only): AMD Radeon? R7 350X, AMD Radeon? R5 340X

A:Dell Optiplex 3040 cannot use both HDMI port and Displayport at same time?

Optiplex 3040 onboard video out ports = HDMI, DP
A computer HDMI out port cannot up convert to a monitor DP in port via a straight cable. What you bought is designed to do the opposite; down convert a computer DP out to a monitor HDMI in port.
You would need to add an HDMI to DP Active Converter.
Computer HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> HDMI in to DP out converter --> DP to DP cable --> Monitor DP in

I tried to update to the edition 1607 of Windows 10 in this notebook that already had win 10 ver 1511 running properly. Still every time that I try to update the blue screen appears again unistalling win updates returning me to the previous version. Can you help me with this? Thanks a lot!MARCO

Hi, trying to update (well I'm not trying but Win10 just keeps on going at it) from Win10 version 1511 to Win10 1607, The machine just stoppes after a few hours with a grey screen and I have to restart until it rolls back to the old version.I have now been told by Microsoft that to do this the machine will need an updated "system devices driver". I know this is an older machine, so is this available? has it been done? will it be done? Is there a way to stop Win10 from trying to update?

A:Win10 1607 update

Hi: I had the same thing happen to my son's PC. He told me that it keeps trying to update, and he has to revert back to the older W10 and it wastes a lot of time. I did not have the time when I was visiting his house, to try and figure out what the issue could be, so I installed the utility to prevent windows from installing updates that mess up the PC. You can do the same by downloading this utility. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-rei... Run the utility before Windows has a chance to start updating itself again to the anniversary edition. It will scan your PC and show the available updates.  Check the Windows update that is trying to install and that will hide the update and it will no longer bother you unless you run the utility again and select unhide the update. HP will not be releasing any W10 drivers to support your PC, so you may have to live with the status quo.

Current: Win10 ver 1511 build 10586.589
Acer laptop Intel Pentium P6100 2GHz, 4GB ram

About a month ago I tried to update to ver 1607, but it restarted to a black screen with the dots going around in circles. I left it running for 48 hours before I forced a shut-down. after restarting it three times it went back to ver 1511.
Since then update has downloaded and installed endlessly with the message "cannot complete update" after restart. I have tried Update Troubleshooter and it states it fixed issues. I have tried Update Assistant without success as well as Media Creation Tool. The only option I get with MCT is to do a complete install wiping out everything. The other options are grayed out.
I chatted with Microsoft and they wanted me to pay $200.00 USD for a year of support or $100.00 USD for a single instance. I declined.
Can anyone offer me a way around this problem, or a way to prevent update from downloading and installing ver 1607?
I have read hundreds of posts about Anniversary update problems but none have helped me thus far.

p.s. I have also received error codes of : 0x8007652 and 0x8024a10a.

Seems the 1607 update is more of an upgrade and many customizations I had previously done have been reset to their default

The first one I'm trying to fix is the volume UI.
Is there a new way to change the new volume UI to the old style version?

I used to be able to go to:
1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\
2. Find key MTCUVC under CurrentVersion key.
3. Set EnableMtcUvc value to 0

Well MTCUVC is no longer there. Can one still somehow revert back to the old style volume UI?

Hello Support Users,
I'm having an issue with the OptiPlex 3040 Intel HD Graphics 530 Driver for Windows 10 Pro. The machine will work fine for awhile then while certain applications like Microsoft Excel are running, the machine will stop working and give the following error:"Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
This machine has 2 monitors so using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter doesn't work, even googling if that works or detects such is almost absent. I'm just letting whoever know it doesn't work with dual monitors on Windows 10 Pro.
I've found this link and installed the following display driver to see if that clears the issue + adjusted some PC settings in "Advanced System Settings" Under This PC : Windows still chooses what to do for visual effects and Virtual Memory is now 4096MB. I've also added the TdrRelay = 10 to the GraphicsDriver section in Registry.
Here is the link that's been suggested and the steps I've taken so far, I did skip the DELL driver and went for the initial Intel Generic Driver instead.
Is anyone else facing this issue with their onboard graphics?
Thread I've used so far to troubleshoot:www.intel.com/.../000005482.html
Any suggestions which could help or solutions for this PC?

I've now tried installing the Windows 10 Pro Creator's Update twice, and both times my fingerprint reader stopped working for Windows Hello. I just get "Your credentials could not be verified". I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver (and I'm on the latest), removing and re-registering my fingerprint, and I've also tried the trick I saw suggested elsewhere of switching to a local account, then back to a Microsoft account. That works temporarily but as soon as I switch back to my MS account, it breaks again. I've rooted around the BIOS but everything seems fine. I have the same fingerprint set on startup and that still works fine; Windows just doesn't recognize it, either when it's passed on from the BIOS or when I try to do it again manually. Has anyone had this problem and managed to fix it *without* reverting permanently to a local account? I don't see why that should be necessary and it definitely isn't supposed to be. I have reverted back to the Anniversary Update both times because of this issue.

I upgraded to Win 10 shortly before the end of the initial upgrade period.  I waited to see what issues were coming out and hoping there would be fixes by the time I did the upgrade.  Once I did the upgrade everything actually went OK.  So now, I just did the Anniversary update.  Most everything is as before EXCEPT now the Audio becomes distorted.  This happens 95%+ of the time when tracks change or I click another track or whatever causes a "start playing this audio file/clip" (either from me clicking another track or software wants to play something e.g., a game, DVD playback, CD playback, online, ...). I found a sort of solution by Turning OFF all Enhancements (I have a Conexant 20672 chipset).  And I mean, checking the box for "Disable all enhancements", not simply unchecking the individual enhancements so they would not be active.  Unfortunately, this also means that the laptop speakers now sound so FLAT it's a real dissappointment. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers (manually) but this didn't resolve the issue.  I'm hoping someone in the community may have a solution.  The W520 is great! (albeit a little aged) and I'm not in a position at this time to even think about replacing it.

Dear all,
here's a weird issue with an Optiplex 3030 AIO on a customer site...
The system was initially bought with Windows 7 Pro SP1 and back then in late 2015
updated to Windows 10 Pro. Everything was OK so far with this setup - no issues at all.

However - this specific 3030 AIO tries to apply the anniversary update (1607) as well - but fails.
When it's doing this from within windows itself it reboots automatically (as part of the update process)
and starts applying the update - but will hang there at 30% for days (started update at friday afternoon - met customer at monday... and the Optiplex 3030AIO still showed the spinning circles

We tried this 3 times within the last 8 weeks (and cleaned up SoftwareDistribution\ folder after each fail) with no success in installing the anniversary update. After a cold reboot - Windows 10 rolls back
to the previous version and keeps working fine until the Windows Update magic decides that it's time
for the automatic upgrade again...
When this happened for the 4th time (earlier this week) we removed this Optiplex 3030 AIO from
the customer site and thought it would be good to reinstall from scratch -  using the latest installation media (USB) offered by the most current media creation tool.

Problem - we cannot even do a clean install of the anniversary release - although DELL claims that
the Optiplex 3030 AIO is fully supported (see SLN297954 in DELL knowledge base).
When doing so it never finishes ... Read more

Hello everybody,I've signed in this community right now. I have a laptop ideapad 500s-13 for a month, with windows 10 pre installed. the CPU is core i3-6100, Intel Graphics 520, Samsung SSD 128Gb, 4 GB ram. After some sumulative update of Win 10 1607 anniversary update, my laptop couldn't boot, it remains in black screen mode with circle of dots rotating but it can't enter in the system, even if i disconnected all the connection and USB cable. I've tried to boot in Safe mode, it works!! but not in normal mode!!So, what I did was to enter in Safe mode and disable the Intel Graphics 520 Driver from device manager (i don't remember the exact name). I restarted the PC, surprisingly it could enter in the system without any problem, but i couldn't change the brighness of the screen and some other feature related to screen. The problem cames up the exact moment when i tried to enable the graphic driver from pc device manager ,the screen turned black with only cursor. So I think the main problem is the incompatibility of the win10 and the intel graphics driver. My current version of intel HD graphic 520 driver is 21.20.16.4550, driver date 11/11/2016. Please, do you have any solutions??? ps. sorry for any mistake in the text, english is not my native language.  thank you in advance

I recently updated my Dell Inspiron 5559 to Windows 10 Creators Update (Version 1703). After updating it the quick keys, i.e., the brightness, volume, play/pause and other direct access keys aren't working the way they should.
Before updating the key functions overlaid on top of the function keys worked when I pressed them directly, for example if I pressed the F1 key which has the "mute symbol" it would mute the volume and if I used the key in conjunction with the Fn key it would carry out the system's normal F1 assigned task.
But after the update the direct functionality of the quick keys seems to be gone and I have to press the Fn key in conjunction with the quick keys in order to change volume, brightness etc. It seems to be a driver incompatibility problem and I suggest Dell issues an update soon.
If someone has an idea on how to restore the keys functionality please let me know.

Hi allI'm still unable to upgrade my laptop T500 to WIN 10 Creator 1703. The update systematically fails after reboot, with an error : error during SAFE_BOOT phasis : error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 .It seems that the problem is due to the graphic card RADEON HD3650.There is no update for this card on Lenovo's support website and the Thinkpad T500 is even no more known so there is no possibility to get any updated driver for my laptop !!!What can I do ? Is it possible toi replace this card in my laptop or is it full part of the mother card ? Any idea, please let me know ... Thanks for your help !

Tech Support Guy System Info Utility version 1.0.0.4

Windows Update shows update as " Feature update to Windows 10, version 1703".
Each update fails with message that something is already being downloaded. After update fails, the reload and attempt to install the same Feature Update try's again. Attempts keep trying in continuous mode.
Any attempt to install 1703 (direct download, USB version, ISO virtual file, or ISO copy to DV D) also fail with message that something is already being downloaded by Windows Update.

I've been trying to install version 1703 since it came out using all of the above methods. So far, nothing has worked.

Appreciate any advice. I've tried installs saving both data and apps, data only and full destructive install. Nothing has worked so far.

I've previously updated my laptop to the latest Windows 10 version (1703) and I found lots of issues like screen flickering, and some random BSODs that seemed to be related to the SSD drive, after lots of tries of fixing those driver problems I decided to go back to the previous build and problems have gone.
But now, Microsoft is pushing this update and I can't postpone for more time, eventually, it'll be installed and I want to know if its a list of drivers(and specific versions) at least for the most critical part:
* Intel HD Graphics
* Nvidia driver
* Samsung SSD

in the past with the optiplex 3020 I was able to connect a VGA monitor even thru the DP, by getting a $10 converter from DP to VGA.
in the 3040 model, they dont work. not a DP-VGA nor does the HDMI-VGA work.
Is there any way for me to get my VGA monitor to work on the 3040 computer? Even just one monitor would help. Or would I have to buy a new monitor with digital connection??

Thanks,
Shia

A:Optiplex 3040 with VGA

What form factor 3040, mini-tower, small form or micro form?
Do you have an add-in video card or only onboard Intel video?  A VGA port was extra-cost option on the 3040.
Have you checked BIOS setup to make sure the video output is set to Auto?
