Hi my Hp notebook short DST test failed .Error code:gk441d-6rt84j-mfpwxp -60u503Product I'd:e9j77ea#abuWhat does that mean and what can I do now ?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Hi, The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.Read other 1 answers

The hard drive will need to be replaced. Are you under warranty? Assuming not, here is the Service Manual: Manual See page 59 of the Manual. Replacement requires removing quite a few screws, but is otherwise pretty straightforward. Your model has a 1TB 5400 rpm SATA drive: Your specs This is a chance to install something a bit faster: a 7200 rpm mechanical, hybrid or solid state drive in increasing order of speed and cost. This would be an exact replacement for you: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-Mobile-Hard-Disk-Drive/dp/B00C9TEBJQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480851150&s... But, as I said there are better options. If you need help with data and software migration/reinstallation let us know. Windows 10 is easy to reinstall since you can just download it from Microsoft. Do you have a backup of your data? hi,I have a desktop, product number is: H3L17AA#ABA, model number: p7-1439. Last two days, when I turned on the computer, after the logo screen, it went to blank and stayed there forever. Does that mean my hard drive need to replace? if so, where do I buy the hard drive? and how to replace it? Please help me out!
Khanh-Le, welcome to the forum. Yes, this means that your hard drive has failed. You can test it by running the SMART test from the BIOS. You can buy a new hard drive from any souce. Here is the hard drive that came installed: Figure 3: Hard driveSize: 1.5 TBInterface: SATARotational Speed: 7200 RPM However, you should buy one that is the same size or larger than the original. Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching. When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue. When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed. My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though. So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine. Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.
Hi there @nmulji, Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check. SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available. You could also try to do a Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.
I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.Read other 1 answers

I recently ran a scheduled diagnostic test of my PC with the manufacturer's diagnostic software. I received two error messages and the advice to promptly replace my hard drive. The first message was Failed (Error code: WHD20-1VR) and the second was Failed (Error code: WHD16-T57). The apply to Targeted Read test and Smart Short Self Test respectively.
So I ran Chkdsk for the C: drive and received no error messages.
Which is correct and what should I do about it? The error message won't go away on the software.
Thanks for helping.
CHKDSK is a very basic check that mostly checks file system and can be set to scan for bad sectors. The manufacturer's diagnostics actually check the physical drive to make sure its operating within the designed parameters and is more thorough.
You should replace the drive.

To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need. If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.Read other 1 answers
My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it. When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD. When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful. I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot, but it is not working. I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console. I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.Read other answers

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed. Your only option is to replace it. You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS. When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger. If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it. You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".
I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.
So is something wrong with the hard drive???
When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?
"...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth" (Sherlock Holmes)
Seems to be the case. But don't worry too much, hard disks are inexpensive and easily replaced.
Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11- window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?
DST:Fail means the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.Read other 1 answers

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.Read other 1 answers

My laptop had been working completely fine until today where I had come home and the start up was taking ages. I restarted and the same issue occurred. My laptop is OUT OF WARRANTY - bought in 2014 and had no issues with the laptop up until now. The support team on Twitter ran through tests with me on this issue and advised that the Hard Drive needs to be replaced due to the Hard Drive Short DAT Check Failure - just now wondering whether any of the data can be recovered and how to go about it? Any help will be appreciated!!!
Probably. You have to stop trying to boot the laptop and physically remove the hard drive. Here's the Service Manual: Manual See p. 43 and 49 for "how to". This is not real easy to do. Post back if you need more help and we can likely find a video. It will be very similar to this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04324972 Once you get the hard drive out you need a usb to SATA adapter like this: https://www.amazon.com/Ugreen-Converter-Adapter-Cable-Power/dp/B00MYU0E0K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=148... Hook this to the hard drive and then attach the usb to another computer and it is likely possible to retrieve data. Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?
You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8516564&CatId=1277 As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781Read other 1 answers

tbh, I'm not sure if I'm running windows 10 64 or 32, I'm using the default it shipped with So, what happened was first my computer would boot up fine, but it would "lock up" occasionally. I would be watching a video, click to a different tab, stuff like that, and everything would become unresponsive and freeze (didn't just happen to my browser, would happen even with my search bar). Restarting and giving it a moment would fix this problem, but it got to the point it happened 20 or 30 minutes after start up. I decided to do a reset, chose to not save my files (didn't do a 100% wipe though) because there's nothing critically important, and I thought it could be a virus. Did the wipe, got an error a good bit in that the wipe couldn't be done (I do not remember the exact wording). Tried again, same thing. It directed me to some options, chose the launch windows 10 normally one, just to see if I was still having problems. Did this, and what would happen is computer would boot up, HP logo, cycle back to computer boot up, HP logo, it was in a loop. Waited a good hour and a half to two hours, would not stop. Turned computer off manually and on a few times, same problem. Turned computer off then on, f2, system quick test, and I got the error in the title FAILURE ID: QBS97X-82L863-XD7WMA-60WD03PRODUCT ID: P1A95UA#ABA
Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-KRead other 4 answers
Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014. Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago. Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work. I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed. Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03 Product ID J7B57AV. Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time? Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?
Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.Read other 5 answers
My laptop isn't starting , when i open it i get the hp logo then a black screen , when i made a fast system test the hard drive short DST check failed with a failer ID: PLW6J2-6SL88N-MFPWXG-60RR03 and a Product ID: E2G95EA#ABV.my main concern is the data stored on the hard disk what can i do to get the laptop working a don't loose the data ?
Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way. See p. 49 of the Manual: Manual If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.Read other 1 answers
